Careers in Language Education and Academic Renewal (CLEAR) Program
Program Goals
Academic Development in Foreign/Heritage Language: Oral and literacy abilities
for academic purposes, including the language needed in the content areas
(math, science, social studies, and language arts), are developed through
foreign/heritage language courses.
Academic Development in English Academic Literacies: Preparatory and required
courses provide students with the support they need in developing the academic
English abilities required for success in college and to serve as bilingual
teachers.
Professional Development through Courses in the Department of Second Language
Studies: Courses offer strong theoretical foundations and practical experience
in bilingual education, multicultural education, second language acquisition,
second language teaching, technology, assessment, and materials development
for teachers.
Program Requirements
The Interdisciplinary Studies Program in the College of Arts and Sciences
allows qualified undergraduate students to devise baccalaureate degrees tailored
to their interests and needs. In addition to two years of core courses, the
Interdisciplinary Studies majors take a minimum of 36 credits of upper division
courses in a major area of concentration and elective courses to fulfill the
124 credits required for the BA. The Interdisciplinary Studies B.A. in ESL
and Bilingual Studies meets heritage/foreign language and ESL major requirements.

(b) Four upper division courses must be taken from the Heritage/Foreign language
major department.
(c) At least two additional electives must be taken from SLS or Heritage/Foreign
Languages and at least one department.
