Course Description: ED 287 integrates and builds upon the competencies in ED 286. Students will apply what they have learned in ED 286 to gain a comprehensive view of the field of special education, its process and laws, and learners with disabilities. A detailed overview of the disabilities that were covered in ED 286 will be recounted, as well as the special education process and key principles to collaborating with the students’ families, school personnel, and other professionals. An in-depth examination of the remaining disabilities, its characteristics, prevalence, causes, and classification will be covered. Students will work with learners with
disabilities, and implement appropriate educational approaches, instructional and behavioral strategies, and placements for these learners. Students will work under the direction of a special education teacher and carry out appropriate roles and responsibilities, as well as advocate for learners with disabilities and their families in a variety of venues. Issues and challenges confronted by learners with disabilities and their families in the special education system will be debated. Students will learn about the commonalities and differences between early childhood special education and special education in the K-12 setting, and ways to
transition learners with disabilities into adulthood.
