ICS 100 is a nontechnical introduction to computers and their uses in society, in business, and in the home environment. ICS 100 provides the knowledge essential to a computer literate functioning member of society. Students will increase their understanding of the history of computers, basic information processing cycle, access and dissemination of information via the World Wide Web, and how computer technology affects the world in which we live. The course includes hands-on experience with computer and Internet applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail.
These class sections have a 16-week schedule and is not self-paced.
SimNet is a required tutorial and homework application for this course. A license for its use is included with each new textbook purchased.
Students buying a used text or ordering one online which does not include the license will be required to purchase the program.
Books may be purchased at the Kapiolani CC bookstore or ordered online at http://www.bookstore.hawaii.edu/uhkcc/home.aspx

Students are required to use Microsoft Office 2012 and have a basic familiarity with the Internet. ICS courses often use a lot of technology.
The Internet allows students to take a course at home using a personal computer. Familiarity with using a computer and basic Internet skills (browsing, sending e-mail, saving/sending files) is required. Students must have a computer with Internet access. Depending on the online course, students may be required to log in at a specific day and time or at anytime. Students taking an online course should always contact their instructor after registration or prior to the first day of class to get detailed information regarding the course.
Minimum Computer Hardware/Software Requirements:
These ICS 100 class section (CRNs 31046, 31047) are conducted on the Internet.
ICS 100 does NOT meet the requirements for Shidler College of Business (UHM), College of Business at Hilo (UHH), or School of Travel Industry Management (TIM); therefore, if you need to meet this requirement, consider enrolling in ICS 101.
ICS 100 students may be required to purchase storage for electronic media to store data files and assignments created as course projects.
