Course Description:
FSHE 185 covers the integration of natural science concepts basic to the study of human nutrition. Emphasis is placed on the nutrient requirements of healthy individuals, nutrient categories and their characteristics, physiological functions, and food sources. Includes the review and adaptation of dietary practices to reflect current nutritional concerns and issues.

The course is designed for the person who wants an introduction to nutrition. No college-level science background is required. Go to the instructor's public website <http://www2.hawaii.edu/~liechty/> to review the course outline.

These FSHE 185 class sections (CRNs 34040, 34041, 34042) are online classes facilitated by Laulima. There are no on campus meetings or simultaneous logon requirements.

Technical Requirements:
The Internet allows students to take a course at home using a personal computer. Familiarity with using a computer and basic Internet skills (browsing, sending e-mail, saving/sending files) is required. Students must have a computer with Internet access. Depending on the online course, students may be required to log in at a specific day and time or at anytime. Students taking an online course should always contact their instructor after registration or prior to the first day of class to get detailed information regarding the course.

This class section is shorter than the 16 week semester. Class length is 13 January - 25 April, 2014. There are no on campus meetings or simultaneous logon requirements.

To be successful in this class, students must have:
1) daily access to a reliable computer with high-speed Internet connection;
2) computer skills to open, save, rename, upload, and download files, view video clips, access study tools, and take quizzes and exams on line;
3) MS Word to complete homework assignments.
