Course Restrictions: Prerequisite: ICS 184 or consent of instructor.
Course Requirements: Students will be contacted by their instructor by UH email before the first day of instruction. Students must check their UH email for course correspondence before the first day of instruction.
Course Description: This course is designed to bring the student up to date on the latest concepts of Local Area Network (LAN) technologies. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the concepts, technologies, components and acronyms inherent in today’s local networking environments.
Textbooks: Books may be purchased at the Leeward CC bookstore or ordered online at http://www.bookstore.hawaii.edu/lcc/home.aspx. If you do not have access to the Internet or unable to travel to the bookstore, you may also order by phone at 1-800-UHBOOKS

Technical Requirements: Cable allows students to take a course at home. To enroll in a cable class, students must have subscription to Oceanic Time Warner Cable.

Oceanic Digital Cable Subscribers (on Oahu, Kauai, Hawaii):
Tune to channel 355 to view your cable class broadcasts

Oceanic Analog Cable Subscribers (on Oahu, Kauai, Hawaii):
- If you have a digital TV that includes a QAM tuner, search for channel 46.55 to view your cable class broadcasts.

- If you do not have a digital equipment, such as an Oceanic-supplied digital cable box, contact Oceanic Cable Customer Care Service at (808) 643-2100 to find out how to get a digital equipment free of charge for so long as you maintain your existing analog service subscription (some restrictions apply.**). Once you have set-up your digital cable box, tune to channel 355 to view your cable class broadcasts.

Maui County Oceanic Subscribers:
- Tune to channel 55 to view your cable class broadcasts

Note: Before registering for the class, prospective students should check with their cable provider or programming line-up to verify they can view the education cable access channel at their home. If student resides in a region of their county that is unable to receive the educational cable access channel listed above, the student should not register for this cable class.

It is recommended that students record the broadcast of their class sessions in case they are unable to view it during the scheduled broadcast time. Students should be familiar with setting the timer on their VCR or DVR to record. For more tips go online at:

Cable class may include an online component. Familiarity with using a computer and basic Internet skills (browsing, sending e-mail, saving/sending files) is required. Students must have a computer with Internet access and a UH email account. Additional Notes: Alternate Technology Access Plan: In registering for a Distance Education course (Cable or Web) the student is responsible for finding immediate alternate access to a computer with Internet connectivity or cable television should that student experience technical difficulties. Technical difficulties can include but are not limited to problems with a student's computer hardware/software; inoperability of a student's VCR or DVR; or lack of service by a student's Internet Service Provider (ISP) or Cable Provider. Technical issues do not constitute the extension of an assignment, project, quiz or exam deadline unless agreed upon by the instructor.

An Alternate Technology Access Plan will be made by the student prior to the start of the semester and should be implemented immediately upon encountering technical difficulties. The student is required to continue course work as a result of having an alternate plan of access while independently resolving any technical issues with hardware/software, VCR/DVD, ISP, or Cable Provider.
