Course Description: JPNS 101 builds a basic foundation that will enable students to acquire and develop language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Japanese in a linguistically and culturally appropriate manner.

Textbooks: Books may be purchased at the Kapiolani CC bookstore or ordered online at http://www.bookstore.hawaii.edu/uhkcc/home.aspx. If you do not have access to the Internet or unable to travel to the bookstore, you may also order by phone at 1-800-UHBOOKS
Technical Requirements: *Must be an Oceanic Time Warner Cable subscriber. UHTV programming is not available on satellite TV systems.

*Oceanic Time Warner Cable Digital TV subscribers may view UHTV programming on channel 355.

*Oceanic Time Warner Cable Digital TV subscribers may also view state-wide cable classes on the UH VOD channel 358. Must have a digital cable box to access VOD channel.

*Oceanic Time Warner Cable Standard or Basic TV subscribers
-that own an HD Television with a QAM tuner, may view UHTV programming on channel 46.55 (27.55 for Maui County).
-that do not have an HD Television, may contact the Oceanic Cable Customer Service Center at (808) 643-2100 to find out how to get a digital cable box free of charge for so long as you maintain your existing analog service subscription. Some restrictions apply.

Recommendations:
*Record class sessions if unable to view during actual broadcast. Students should be familiar with setting the timer on their VCR or DVR to record.

Online Component
Course may also include an online component. Familiarity with using a computer and basic Internet skills (browsing, sending e-mail, saving/sending files) is required. Students must have a computer with Internet access and a UH email account. Check with your instructor for more information.

Technology Requirements:
1) a Japanese-ready computer that can play and record mp3 sound files;
2) flash-based files;
3) a microphone;
4) a web camera; and 5) have reliable access to a high-speed internet connection.
