| Course Description: | This course offers an
overview of linguistic study, introducing students to linguistic principles and terminology applicable to all languages. In exploring the nature and function of human languages, the course examines how language is used, how it is acquired, how it changes over time, how it is patterned, how it is represented and processed in the brain, and how it affects culture and history. Major concerns, discoveries, methods, and controversies in this exciting field are discussed. |

| Technical Requirements: | The Internet allows students to take a course at home using a personal computer. Familiarity with using a computer and basic Internet skills (browsing, sending e-mail, saving/sending files) is required. Students must have a computer with Internet access. Depending on the online course, students may be required to log in at a specific day and time or at anytime. Students taking an online course should always contact their instructor after registration or prior to the first day of class to get detailed information regarding the course.
Computer with Internet access and word processing software (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works,WordPerfect, and OpenOffice are acceptable). Students should be able to view and listen to multimedia via Java applications and Macromedia Flash, as well as at least one of RealPlayer, Quicktime, and Windows MediaPlayer (all of which are available online as free downloads). |
