Tips for Cable Course Students
While distance learning
courses are convenient, they do require time and the ability and
willingness to study independently. You must have a well developed
sense of self-discipline to complete a telecourse successfully.
It is not just watching television. Be sure that you have time
to take the course.
Cable Course Study Tips
-
Be sure to attend on-campus sessions for orientation, discussions, and
examinations. Most colleges and universities require a few on-campus sessions.
-
Develop a regular schedule for viewing programs and completing reading
and special assignments. Avoid disruptions and distractions during this time.
-
Complete the assigned reading before you view each television program.
-
Keep note taking to a minimum while viewing the television programs.
-
Contact the professor by phone or email for assistance if you have difficulty
understanding a unit of study.
-
Make sure that you have access to all of the written material from the
professor as well as the textbook and study guide.
-
Identify a study partner for each television course, or form a small
study group of three to five individuals.
-
Cable course students are encouraged to use a videotape recorder (VCR)
to record program you would otherwise miss and record for later
review.
-
Develop a set of notes for each unit of the course so you can review
for examinations without having to read the entire text just
before the exam.
-
Develop a vocabulary list of terms that are important to the course,
especially those that are unfamiliar to you. Write definitions
in your own words and review them.
-
If you miss a broadcast, check with your professor whether a set of videotapes
of your course is available for viewing at the UH campus
nearest you.

Cable Troubleshooting Tips
-
Check the schedule to find your cable course broadcast days and times.
-
Be sure you are watching the correct educational access channel (see
listing below).
-
If you are recording the program, double check your timer settings. Be
sure it is set for the
correct date, start time, end time, channel, and tape speed. Be sure your videotape
length is long
enough to
record the whole program.
-
If you are not receiving any signal on your screen, check behind your
television, cable
box, and VCR to ensure all cables and AC cords are connected properly. Or,
contact your
cable provider
to
see whether
they
are conducting any cable repairs
in your area.
-
If you miss the program due to technical problems, check with your professor
whether a set
of videotapes of your tele course is available for viewing at the UH campus
nearest you.
-
If you
believe another program is airing during your telecourse's broadcast
time,
please call the troubleshoot number listed below in your area
immediately. Identify yourself
and
your telecourse class,
and
state your concern.
