Q. I made a quiz, but it doesn't show up in student view, what is wrong?

You will need to make the quiz available for student viewing and submission.

Q. I made a quiz available in WebCT and students took it, but they all got "zero" as their score.

You may need to set value points and re-grade your quiz to alter the zero score.

 Q. My students took a quiz, but the score didn't appear in the gradebook.

There could be a variety of reasons for this:

  • server overload
  • certain quiz sections could not be self-graded by WebCT due to being in an essay format, you may need to enter the quiz, provide a score for the essay question, and update ( remarking)
  • students neglected to click the "View Results" button when they submitted the quiz, you will need to remark the score

Q. Students can't get into the quiz.

Q. How can I be sure students don't cheat on the on-line quiz?

You really can't, in most test situations there is a potential for cheating. To help control this possibility you could try to avoid quizzes that consist solely of multiple-choice questions and text book related questions and utilize formats such as "Paragraph".

You could use the Quiz Settings section and select to have the quiz timed, questions released one at a time or both. You can also choose to have the quiz proctored in a lab setting.

Q. How do I upload questions to WebCT?

Questions need to be in a format that the WebCT Question Database can read, then uploaded and imported into the Quiz/Survey Question Database.

You can also use Respondus, from Respondus.com which allows for assessment creation offline then uploads directly to your WebCT account, creating the necesary Category and links. Currently UH has a license for Respondus which is available for all UH faculty and staff.

You can download your own copy of Respondus from <http://www.hawaii.edu/talent/respondus.html> NOTE: you need a UHUNIX name and password in order to download.

Q. How can I prevent online cheating?

There are no easy answers, but you might consider exploring other ways to assess learners, keeping most quizzes and tests for student self-assessment and spot-checks throughout your course.
