No, it does not matter which computer platform you use.

Q. Can any student access courses on WebCT?

Basically it depends on how the instructor has set up student access for the course. If set for self registration, students can enter the course themselves using their myWebCT ID and password. If not, only students added to the course by their instructor can have access. Check with your instructor for confirmation.

Q. Do I need to purchase the printed course material package if I am using WebCT?

If your instructor has specific course materials available to be used in conjunction with activities listed in their WebCT course you will need to purchase these at the bookstore. Contact your instructor for course material information.

Q. What software do I need?

You will need a browser, the software tool that lets your computer "read" the pages on the World Wide Web. Netscape and Internet Explorer are the two most popular browsers; others are also available. For best results check out your browser version and settings from the following URLs:

Your computer must be able to run browser software: Windows PC, Macintosh, or UNIX machine. The computer should have a minimum of 16MB of memory; at least 32MB is recommended. If your machine is not already connected to a network and has an IP address, you need a modem to dial into your campus modem pool or an Internet Service Provider to obtain an IP address and to be connected to the Internet. You should have at least a 28.8-kbps modem.

Q. I can't find some of the features in my WebCT course that I've read about. Where are they?

Each individual instructor customizes their WebCT course the way he or she sees fit. The instructor may have chosen not to make certain WebCT features or functions available to you for this particular course. Check with your instructor if you are not sure.

Q. Is there a WebCT workshop I can take?

Some instructors schedule an introductory class to prepare students to use WebCT Check with your instructor to determine whether such a workshop is available to you.

You might also consider taking a look at the main WebCT.com site where they list many tutorials and FAQ's for students, just click on the link for "Students".

Q. Where do I find my WebCT course?

WebCT courses are available at http://webct.hawaii.edu , select the link for "Course Listings" and select the campus in which your course is being offered.

Q. Is there a manual for using WebCT that I can refer to?

There are a variety of tutorials available on the Internet, yet many are campus specific. There is also the Help link available in your WebCT course that offers student information on how to use many of the tools an instructor may choose to add to a course. The main WebCT Corporate site offers some great student information <http://www.webct.com/oriented> as well.

Q. Can I use AOL to set up my WebCT course?

We recommend that if you are using America Online (AOL) for your web access use a stand-alone compatible version of either Netscape or Internet Explorer instead of AOL's built-in browser. You can install either of these browsers by downloading from our Hawaii.edu site:

Check out how to use AOL successfully within the WebCT environment by following directions from the WebCT Browser Tune-up page.
