Overview of community

 

 Papakolea is a Native Hawaiian Homestead, with 342 homes and approximately 1,500 residents.  Learn more about Hawaiian Homestead Land. 

Geographical perspective

The Papakolea community is located near downtown Honolulu, situated between communities of Pauoa and Manoa.

Pauoa and Honolulu are middle to upper-middle class income communities, Papakolea is middle to lower.

Communities

 

Papakolea is located at the beginning of Tantalus mountain, with three distinct communities:  two are on the ridgeline, one in a small valley.  Papakolea was the first community; Kewalo the second (in the valley), and the latest, Kalawahine, also on a ridgeline.

Papakolea is the oldest community, with most homes on the ridgeline with multiple steps to enter the homes.

 

Community Centers

No clinic or hospital exists in community; however, the recreation center has a part-time internist providing primary care and home visits three times a week.  The nearest hospital is ten minutes away, the Queen's and Kapi'olani Medical Centers.  Click here to learn more about the Queen's or Kapi'olani Medical Centers.

Schools

The Department of Education is a State-wide organization, responsible for education of all citizens from kindergarten through the 12th grade.  The Roosevelt complex serves the Papakolea Community.  Learn more about the Department of Education.
