AAS/ATJ CONFERENCE.
Several of our former colleagues will be returning to Hawaii to attend the upcoming conference to be held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel, April 11-14, 1996: Hiroshi Miyaji, as President of ATJ; and Tim Vance, as editor of the Journal of ATJ. Peter Lee, Robert Russell and Jim Unger will also be in attendance as members on separate panels. Bob Borgen and Dick Rubinger may also be visiting Honolulu during the conference. Current members of our Department who will be presenting papers are: Haruko Cook, John DeFrancis, Bob Huey, Nobuko Ochner, and Arthur Thornhill; current and former graduate students, Yoko Okita and Ikuko Yuasa. Participating as discussants on a roundtable are Bart Mathias, Leon Serafim, and Sasha Vovin. The special ATJ Thursday Seminar scheduled for April 11 was organized by Haruko Cook, John Haig, Kyoko Hijirida, and Mildred Tahara.
KOREO-JAPONIC CIRCLE. Thanks to Leon Serafim and Sasha Vovin, our Department proudly announces the establishment of this Circle dedicated mostly but not exclusively to the linguistic history and prehistory of the Korean peninsula and the Japanese islands. For those interested in participating, meetings are held at irregular intervals (usually Thursday evenings from 7:00) at various faculty and student homes, with a pot-luck pupu and beer gathering following the meeting. (Consideration is given to avoid conflicting with the Austronesian Circle meetings.)
OUR INSTRUCTORS may be language teachers first but a few of them are also doctoral students in various fields. In EALL (Japanese) are Andy Curry and Gladys Nakahara (both working on their dissertations); Janice Omura, Yumiko Tateyama, Shinichiro Yokomizo, and Keiko Yoshioka; and in EALL (Chinese) is Suzanne Zeng. Keiko Hirata is a student in Political Science; Terry Klafehn, Hiro Justin Ota and Seok Hoon You are in Linguistics; and Kimi Kondo is in Educational Foundation. Faculty who experience the classroom from the OTHER side are reminded of what it is like to be students and therefore, hopefully, are more understanding of the learners' struggle with new materials. We'll ask current students of these instructors about this. CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS
