Summer Study in Hainan, China

Established in 1998, the summer study abroad program in Hainan, China provides an opportunity for intensive Mandarin study. The program runs for nine weeks every summer on the campus of Hainan University near Haikou, the capital of the island province of Hainan. Japan

Summer Study in Kobe, Japan

The intensive summer Japanese language program in Kobe, Japan focuses on Japanese language study at the INTERMEDIATE LEVEL ONLY. Students complete their second-year foreign language requirement and have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Japanese language and culture. Year-In-Japan Program

The Year-In-Japan Program is located at the Konan International Exchange Center (KIEC) on the campus of Konan University in Kobe, Japan. The program runs for an entire academic year, beginning in early September and ending in May of the following year. Students live with Japanese families in the Kobe/Osaka area and attend UHM-accredited classes. Semester/Year in Machida, Japan

The study abroad program in Machida is coordinated by J.F. Oberlin University, located in the Tokyo area, and is offered for an academic year or for the Spring Semester. Students have the opportunity to study Japanese language and Japanese content courses (in English) in areas such as politics, economics, education, management, history, literature, art, and intercultural communication. One-Year Exchange through CJS

The Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) offers one-year exchange programs with the following Japanese universities:

  1. Doshisha University
  2. Hiroshima University
  3. Kyoto University
  4. Nanzan University
  5. Sophia University
  6. University of the Ryukyus

The CJS website contains a brief introduction to each university and specific eligibility information specific to each program. All the programs require a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above and at least one year of formal Japanese-language training. Students are responsible only for paying UHM tuition and living expenses in Japan.

IUC Intensive Training, Yokohama, Japan

The Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies invites applicants for its intensive training in advanced spoken and written Japanese program in Yokohama, Japan. The program is designed to bring each participant to a level of proficiency sufficient for advanced academic or professional use. Training focuses on development of the ability to converse in Japanese on specialized subjects, to comprehend and deliver public presentations, and to read and write materials in Japanese in order to function professionally in academia, business, government, and other fields.

Korea

UH Manoa students may choose to study at the following universities in Korea through the UHM International Exchange program:

Exchange students pay their regular UHM tuition and DO NOT pay tuition at the university in Korea. Normally, students pay for their own roundtrip airfare, housing, meals and local transportation costs in Korea. However, several universities have special financial assistance packages for students, including the following:

TaLK Exchange Student Program at Cheju and Inha

The Teach and Learn in Korea (TaLK) program offers an Exchange Student Program that allows exchange students to teach in afternoon classes of Korea elementary schools in areas outside of Seoul. Two of UHM’s partner universities are participating in this program—Cheju National University and Inha University in Incheon. Successful TaLK applicants are awarded a Korean government scholarship that provides a 900,000 won monthly allowance, accommodation, roundtrip airfare, national health insurance and a one-time "settlement allowance" of 300,000 won. Students should apply to the UHM International Exchange Coordinator to be exchange students at either Cheju National or Inha by submitting the items listed online at http://www.manoa.hawaii.edu/international/ie/oes/.

GU8 Honor Scholarship at Inha

Inha University will offer to one University of Hawaii student a GU8 Honor Scholarship that covers the cost of roundtrip airfare between Honolulu International Airport and Incheon International Airport.

UOS Scholarship

The University of Seoul will provide a scholarship of 400,000 won per month to any University of Hawaii student selected to be an exchange student at UOS.

English Village internship at SCH

Soonchunhyang University provides an internship for exchange students. An internship consists of the exchange student being a “Cultural and Language Ambassador” through group meetings, a language and cultural exchange center and by living side by side with Korean students in a specially designated international dormitory (English Village). Internship duties for group meetings and exchange center will be up to 15 hours per week. Housing is provided at no charge, roundtrip airfare is reimbursed up to $800, and students receive a stipend of 150,000 won every week.
