7. What did you like best about the course?
The Labs and the hands on exercises.
I enjoyed making maps in ArcGIS as practice for using them in the professional world.
Hannah was very supportive and extremely assistive of course material.
Subject I had no experience with was explained in terms that I could understand, having no prior experience with the computer program.
Hannah is so easy to approach and very nice. She smiles at everything, so she must love what she does. She also takes the time to answer the numerous questions each student may have, even though others get impatient (and give nasty looks). That describes a really devoted teacher. I really liked that she was available anytime through email and class.
the atmosphere is very nice ! the instructor takes students as friends.
The lab instructions are fantastic and the one-year ArcGIS 10 software is a bonus as well. The lectures were solid especially given the technical and dry nature of the subject material. I could tell a lot of effort went into developing the lecture slides and it was great to see them posted on Laulima. The book might be a bit overly clinical and hard to follow or stay focused in terms of prolonged reading. The condensed nature of summer session made it difficult to stay current with the reading.
8. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
The labs are too easy. Perhaps more labs with less instructions that force you to re-use previously learned skills.
N/A
Including all steps as a tutorial was great! Maybe by the 3rd lab she could just remind us to set up Environment's Workspaces, but the steps should no longer be necessary?
Faster lectures; don't dwell on individual students' questions, but talk to them after lecture about questions.
The lectures were fine, but the labs could use a little less instructions after about the fifth lab. Like one student pointed out in lecture, we are mostly reading the instructions verbatim and clicking the tools without looking for them. I understand this may be very helpful for those without any GIS skills or knowledge, but it would be nice to show us how to use a tool ONCE and then make us search for it afterwards if we need to use it. Maybe I just like hunting for things :) I'll definitely keep every lab for future reference.
She only needs time, more applied GIS experiences outside the classroom, and more teaching practice. From time to time, it was apparent she did not know how best to respond to a student question so she turned it back to the class for their input. At the university level, it's often hard to say I don't know how best to answer your question. Either way, this was a experience issue rather than a fitness/competency issue. She also followed the book and the author's stream of thought and analysis based on the syllabus. Regardless, all of these points will be addressed as she moves forward in her Ph.D. studies and subsequent career. Overall, she did an excellent job and has a bright future ahead of her assuming there will still be funding for geography research efforts at academic institutions.

16. Other comments:
Very helpful course. Very glad that I took it.
For an introductory course, I feel that we received a greater knowledge through experiential practice from efficient teaching methods.
Enjoyed the class and learned valuable tools that I know will serve me well later! This class made me interested in going on to Applied GIS.
Great intro class, which made me interesting in upper level GIS courses.
The lab instructions are excellent and will be a great resource if I ever need to apply GIS in the future. The only suggestion on the instructions to identify potential teasers or problem points that a student might encounter as they execute ArcGIS tools. I understand that much of GIS is applied and learning by doing but there are specific tasks that might cause more problems than others. just a general red flag would be helpful.
