10. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
|
| Looking at people with disabilities as people first. |
| I learned how to be sensitive to those who have learning disabilities. I learned to see them as people
who have a disability, and to not see them as being defined by their disability. |
| just a general understanding of special needs children and what they need to help them make
progress |
| me personally not a lot. I now know a lot more about children with learning
disabilities and those who are gifted and talented. Outside of trivia and
research data that I can tell to my elementary school teacher of a mom I
didn't gain much that will benefit me personally. |
| The main concept I learned was how to treat exceptional adults or children. And that they are just like us with hopes and dreams. It also helped me to reflect on my childhood and helped me to understand my own development. |
| hopefully I can use some of the concepts to helping gifted and talented
children |
| I felt the discussions were a great part of the class! I felt like I was
actually understanding the material rather than just regurgitating
information. I feel like UH should have more classes like that available, but
I understand it is difficult. |
|
|
11. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
|
| The effective strategies involved in assisting exceptional children. The videos were extremely helpful, there should be more of them. |
| I found that the videos were extremely helpful because they were a good way of seeing other
peoples personal experiences. |
| learning what things most effect SN children and how to better help them in any environment home
school socially anything |
| I liked the fast pace and meeting every day. I didn't have to remember stuff
I learned like a month prior for tests and stuff it was short and sweet and
to the point. |
| The use of both textbooks. I loved the brain book and the personal stories in the education book. |
| Something that was emphasized in this course was to see exceptional children as every other child. This course has really helped me to see beyond the disability. |
| Good student teacher interaction |
| Dewayne helped me a lot through the course. I felt like I could ask him one
question and he could answer a million other questions. He really mad the
class interesting and kept my attention in class. I also feel like discussion
keeps everybody more interested and gets everybody excited to learn the
material. |
|
|
12. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
|
| The history of exceptionality. Dewayne tended to talk about himself a lot |
| I think that the textbook (Education book) was a little tough to read. For some reason, the material
in the book seemed like it could have been condensed. |
| all of it was helpful and i valued all the information that i learned |
| honestly the textbook was boring and a bit dry. I feel like i would have
rather been tested than take the day after mini quizzes. |
| nothing. |
| I felt the least valuable thing about this course was that it was so short. I
feel like this class could go on for another semester, and that there was a
lot more to learn. I think it would be highly beneficial for UH to offer
small classes like this during the fall and spring semesters. |

28. What changes would you make in the writing assignments?
|
| The first writing assignment was very limited in the guidelines and there was very little critical thinking involved. |
| I think that there could have been a little more instruction in how to do the Research Review. |
| I didn't really find the research review useful at all the interactive paper however i did find very
useful |
| I felt like despite being told how structured the literature review was i
couldn't find the rubric. I certainly knew what to look at during the reading
but actually writing it I felt a bit lost. I felt like I was almost bull
shitting the assignment. I also didn't know where to start for the second assignment. |
| I enjoyed both writing assignments, so nothing should be changed. I like that one was formal and the other informal. |
| For our first writing assignment, I feel that there was a lot of freedom in deciding what topic to choose. This was great, because we could pick something that interested us. I wished that there was a overview over the APA format, especially since portions of the grade depended on the format. |
| I would try to do the research review in smaller parts. I think it would be
beneficial to go over reading a research review as a class. It was difficult
to read it and analyze it at the same time. I think we could have taken
smaller steps leading into the final research review. |
|
|
29. Other comments:
|
| Dewayne loves his students almost as much as he loves himself. |
| I did enjoy this course! |
| I enjoyed taking both his 100 and 442 class and would definitely say he knows what he's doing |
| good job. Dewayne was enthusiastic and had a lot of really useful stories of
working with children. honestly I learned more from his explanations on
dealing with children than I did from the reading. IE when he told us about
when he was teaching a child to read and the mom came in and watched and as
soon as the child saw his mom he head butted Dewayne. He proceeded to explain
how he was teaching the child and how he told the mom that the kid has
associated acting out with her and his home environment. He also demonstrated
the necessity of self restraint by ignoring being butted in the face. That
stuck with me and I will always know a bit more about dealing with
exceptional children because of his first hand account. |
| I took away from this class a lot more than I expected to because it touched me personally. I really enjoyed this summer course and would recommend it in the future. :) |
| Dewayne tries maybe a little too hard to be nice and fair maybe too many personal stories, they are good insight but maybe a little too often. |
| The discussion based classed was an awesome idea! I think everybody really
appreciated that we could pick our own grading system. It really makes us
want to come to class, as well as learn to apply what we have learned a lot
better. |
