I enjoyed this course because I was able to learn about culture while also learning about the healthcare system. I liked the way Dr. Chun taught this class because not only did we do paperwork but we also got to go on field visits. I also learned a lot about researching and different databases to look at when researching.
I have throughly enjoyed this course. I thought the course was structured very well. My only suggestion is to further explain the assignments. For example, I think that some people (myself included) were less apt to ask some questions in class about the review of the literature review specifics. I selected agree for # 7 because I feel that I am still developing my understanding about cultural competency, because of that I am not entirely ready to communicate 100% clearly yet; I know that will change as time goes on. I selected agree for #8 because I am still learning about myself, but still have questions regarding my own culture.
Great course if you are interested in going into a healthcare-related field. A bit of a heavy workload (especially compared to some of the other honors sections!)
Two hours is a long time to be sitting in one chair. I loved the field-trips and I think I would've enjoyed the classes more if there were more interactive activities that forced you to get up and do something. I also loved listening to the guest speakers. Zotero might be a better program to introduce first rather than myendnote. I believe that it is more user friendly.
The class really brought awareness to resources in the community and cultural issues that we other wise weren't really aware of.

7. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
I was most grateful of all the speakers that Dr. Chun included throughout the semester. Hearing input regarding the medical field from professionals with all different backgrounds was very inspiring. I would recommend any student planning to apply for medical school to enroll for this course.
I most valued the opportunity to learn from other students and resources outside of the university, rather than from lectures alone.
I really appreciated the field trips to Kokua Kalihi Valley and to Jabsom. It was a great opportunity to meet Dr. Kasuya and Dr. Izutsu learn some hints for our med school application process. I also appreciated the numerous guests that visited us.
I liked how numerous perspectives were covered in this course
8. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
The textbook chapter readings were okay, but we did not use the book enough to make it feel completely necessary.
I cannot think of anything

10. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Stay amazing! I enjoyed the way the course has been set up and cannot imagine it to be any better.
Nothing. She is a great teacher!
Please keep the blogs on Laulima going. It really made us "read" the assigned materials since otherwise we would've embarrassed ourselves in front of everybody by writing bogus. It's great that we got to see other people's opinions and literally know how "long" they wrote :), so that we could always know what was expected. For your next class I think there should be a mandatory first draft due so that this will force them to not procrastinate writing their report. It might seem a little torturing at first, but I really think this would get them working.
This course needs no improvement

Thank you for being so nice and helpful!
The small class allowed us to get to know each other very well. I was really glad that this class wasn't extremely difficult or anything just because it was a Writing Intensive and an Upper Division Honors course. Thank you for always being considerate of our busy schedules and being lenient about assigning little homework, extending due dates, and accepting midnight submissions on Tuesdays. Not so many of the teachers I've had were like this :) Also, it was great that you were very quick at replying back to our emails!! I am truly glad that I took this course. I learned a lot from you, the resources you posted, and all of your guest speakers. I will definitely start recommending my other classmates to take this course!
I enjoyed every aspect of this course. It was very enlightening

4. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Emphasis on ways in which knowledge of cultural beliefs and habits are being implemented in the medical professions.
The course gave me a chance to look deeply into problems with cultural competency in the medical field. I would have not known about this issue if I haven't taken this course. Also, I enjoyed the guest speakers, the field trips and also the class discussions.
The trips to other facilities for on-site examples and working together in class to flesh out reports
Learning about culture but being able to apply it to the real world. The best was being able to see what we were learning in class being applied to everyday situations.
What I thought was most valuable in this class was that Dr Chun was very flexible about changing the class schedule as and when it was suitable for us. I feel that this made the class more conducive to learning. Also, us having class discussions rather than having just Dr. Chun talk made the topic very engaging for me. I especially appreciated that she invited guest speakers and took us on field trips that were relevant to the class. With regard to the homework, by giving us step by step projects eventually leading up to the final paper and presentation (e.g. lit review summaries, 2 min presentation drafts, etc)I feel that I was definitely more prepared for the final than I would have been otherwise.
I was impressed at what the class turned out to be. I think that the site visits and hands-on opportunities were the most valuable. It was especially helpful to learn that the idea of culture as an aspect or component of a med students basic knowledge will be moving up in terms of importance in our education.
The field visits
5. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Emphasis on medicine, while certainly important to the course and most of the students, was not essential for me.
The 2 books we had to buy
Nothing
The books that we were required to get for this course were expensive. Moreover, we did not need to read more than half of each book.
I found many of the reading materials to be very dry and felt at times that the abstracts were sufficient when it came to understanding the material. I think if there were particular questions that were assigned for each article, I may have gotten more out of them.
N/A
6. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
Discussion on cultural competency will benefit my as an Asian Studies major.
I am now aware of the role of cultural competency in the medical field. I will be able to use the knowledge I gained from this course for my future career as a doctor.
Connections to faculty and information on med school and the importance of what is taught there ie. cultural competency
I got to meet a lot of people in the proffesional field which I hope to be apart of in the future, networking :D
This class has given me new insight to the world of medicine and some food for thought as to what I would do or stand for in situations that call for cultural competence.
It is with the risk of harming, that people often generalize or make assumption about others and as doctors one is taught to do no harm, therefore, it is essential that we learn the proper tools and become culturally competent to deal with as many "types" of patients that we can. I think that I was able to learn a valuable component that puts me ahead of the game when it comes to my post grad education.
I learned how to handle diversity on all levels whether at school or at work
7. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Discussion on cultural competency.
The guest speakers' from various areas.
Connections to faculty and information on med school and the importance of what is taught there ie. cultural competency. Also the presentation/public speaking training.
Maria is probably the most valuable resource of this course. She really knows this topic and is willing to help me accomplish all of my goals
Like I said in a previous answer, I found the homework assignments leading us up to our final product to helpful as well as guest speakers we heard from and feild trips we went on.
Uh... repetitive question!!!
The field visits because I was able to look at cultural competency is actually incorporated into the sites and education.
8. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
N/A
The textbooks
Everything was valuable
The expensive books.
Same as question 5!!!
The way that people in the course separated themselves based on race
9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Perhaps the field trips could be spaced out better.
N/A
more focus on the public speakers, readings that directly apply, less repetitive readings
The course was very well done. The only request that I have is to try and make this a writing intensive and an ethical course.
I think Dr Chun did a good job in teaching this class and making it interesting. She was also very approachable and open to new ideas and suggestions.
I think that you did an amazing and more than understanding when it came to unexpected absences. I feel like I was treated as an adult and not a "dumb kid" as far as circumstances and believe that I was able to pull a great deal of knowledge from the opportunity of learning from you!
Try no to make people feel that they are below in understanding and capacity.
10. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Very responsive and punctual.
Dr. Chun responded to my emails immediately, and was very helpful in her suggestions for the topic of my paper.
Very knowledgeable about subject and other subjects of interest. Lots of faculty contacts for guest speakers.
Mariaʻs network of people. She had a lot of guest speakers that really inspired me to want to learn
Dr Chun's flexibility and empathy for us. I also felt that she was very willing to go above and beyond to guide us through the course as well as assist us in developing our final paper.
Her understanding that life happens!
11. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
N/A
one-on-one feed back in person was not very specific, better when received feedback over the internet because very specific
Nothing
-
No complaints!!! I would definitely recommend this class/instructor to others!
12. My overall evaluation of this course is...
An excellent course, both for those students interested in medicine and those who wish to see the interplay between culture and medicine.
Great. The course was very interesting, and I am excited to learn more about cultural competency in medical school.
was very interesting, more interesting than I expected. Good course for anyone interested in medicine or even nursing or culture.
This was the best course that I have taken here at UHM. I like the way the course was structured. There was a lot of assignments but none of it was work because I interested in all of the case studies.
I enjoyed this class greatly and would definitely be interested to take the class again should Dr Chun be teaching it. I would also recommenr her to my friends.
I'm sorry, but I find this survey extremely redundant!
It was great
