9. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
LEarning the use of Zotero and gaining more practice with research topics and writing.
The class discussions were quite valuable. The opportunity to develop my opinions about the subject through readings and subsequent discussion was helpful and enjoyable.
I think the most helpful part for me was practicing professional oral presentation skills and organizing/writing a research paper.
I liked that we were actively involved in reading articles and discussing them. I liked the demanding pace because it forced me to get deeper in to the topics than if we did not have weekly assignments and readings. I think that the breadth of material was good to get a survey of different topics in the field.
10. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
the library sessions were way too long.
Simply my own schedule--I kept ending up wiith not enough time to prepare things for this class to a level in keeping with my standards
I don't think anything was not valuable, but one area that would have been interesting to dig deeper into would have been to go in to specific aspects of different cultures. I know that it would be broadly generalizing to do so, but to go through some of the stereotypical issues that patients of different cultural groups experience would have been interesting. I picked up some specific issues in the readings, but it would have been interesting if there was a class dedicated to issues that regularly come up in clinical situations, or if a guest speaker could go over this. It was interesting to hear, for example, about some Samoan's loyalty to their chief making them not take a western doctor seriously. I know that the point of this class isn't to give us clinical skills, but I would have liked more anecdotes to put specific examples of cultural misunderstandings in medicine. However, I understand that this would have the danger of painting stereotypes, but I still think it would have been a really cool interesting activity as long as it was designed to promote awareness of specific issues not make generalizations.
11. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Very easy to talk to and get in contact with. Very helpful and pleasant
She genuinely cares about this subject and is dedicated to exposing us to all angles and aspects regarding it. The opportunities to hear from various professionals was particularly eye- opening. She was also very concerned with the individual students' ability, welfare, and progress
Dr. Chun was always available for help or questions and also willing to look over any drafts of assignments before turning them in.
I think Dr. Chun was open to student input and always ready to let the class be flexible based on how the conversations were going. I also like that she created a very clear learning experience of professional behavior, presentation skills and dress. I was not sure if I should wear a suit to my JABSOM interview, I was afraid it would be taken as being overly formal or overly eager, but now I know it shows respect for the interview. I think her personality is perfect for the class. It was serious, but still could be fun.

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I really liked all of the guest speakers and opportunities to interact with the community through the talks, research, and field trips. Not only did the information from each person and experience really helpful in building my resource but it also was really fascinating as a student on the premed track. The expansion from the resources available on-campus gave me a variety of mature and new perspectives and made the field of cross cultural healthcare real.
I think the most valuable aspect of this course was the presentation skills I learned by having to present throughout the semester. I also found the guest speakers to be valuable.
The standard of writing was great in this class and it really helped improve my skills. Also, all the guest speakers and visits really made me think about my future in the medical field and I appreciated that.
Everything about this course was a valuable experience to myself. I think the main contributor to my opinion is the fact that it is so much different than anything else offered to pre-meds in UH. As a pre-med, I am often funneled into taking science courses, and resultantly, it becomes my perception of what medicine is. However, HON 491 opened my eyes to what medicine truly is-- a patient centered field focused on culturally competent care. To be more specific, I really valued the diversity of guest speakers, field trips, and the CCHC. Finally, I really like that you had us enforce deadlines upon ourselves. It kept me on track for my project and made me start early.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I actually do not think there is a part of the course that is least valuable; all of the skills I either built or improved upon are very helpful as a student in college, in the Honors Program, and on the premed track.
I did not find much value in the online class we had once. However I understand the reasoning behind it.
Short deadlines. I felt overwhelmed quite a lot from this semester. :( I didn't know what was graded more, the resource or paper so I didn't know how to divide my limited time resources.
The text was the least valuable aspect. I purchased it because it was listed as "required" on MyUH but it was not used at all for this course.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Her knowledge base and connections was really helpful. She knew a lot of people not only to bring in to talk to us but also out in the community. If I ever had a specific problem or challenge she was always able to advise me on how to find someone or some type of solution. She has high expectations but helps you get there--she doesn't leave you stranded which is very much appreciated.
Most valuable would be the willingness to provide feedback and guidance on project requirements.
I loved that you could send her assignments over and over again with such a short turnover period. It really helped my writing and presenting.
Dr. Chun is the most helpful professor I have ever had in UH. She is always willing to provide feedback on assignments and whenever a request is made, she returns the work with feedback almost immediately!
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
I can't think of anything.
I wish assignments were explained more rather than just giving short outlines for big papers.
The expectations for essays and projects can be a little fuzzy at times. However, the fact that we finish assignments so much ahead of the actual due dates and get feedback from you, always remedies this problem. I would maybe suggest creating a rubric for the assignments.
15. Other comments:
Perhaps the projects would be best as groups. I know this was the original intent and the number of classes offered and students enrolled cannot be helped. But I like the original intention of groups and support that in future classes. It would be helpful to be able to work with another person to share and expand on ideas and to share the work load so more can be done on the websites. Overall a really interesting and worthwhile class!
I would have liked a breakdown of the overall grading in regards to letter grade achieved and what the equals in terms of GPA.
I can hit the standards that she has, but it would be nice if she laid it out before assigning. I've never had to hit such high standards, which is great, but I didn't know her standards until after assignment submission.
As a general suggestion about the class, it would be awesome if it was spread out between 2 or 3 days. Having a once-a-week class for 3 hours at a time can be overwhelming. However, I do recognize that coming onto campus all the way from Queens and walking up from the parking structure can be a real pain!

11. Other comments:
The class really brought awareness to resources in the community and cultural issues that we other wise weren't really aware of.
Two hours is a long time to be sitting in one chair. I loved the field-trips and I think I would've enjoyed the classes more if there were more interactive activities that forced you to get up and do something. I also loved listening to the guest speakers. Zotero might be a better program to introduce first rather than myendnote. I believe that it is more user friendly.
I enjoyed this course because I was able to learn about culture while also learning about the healthcare system. I liked the way Dr. Chun taught this class because not only did we do paperwork but we also got to go on field visits. I also learned a lot about researching and different databases to look at when researching.
Great course if you are interested in going into a healthcare-related field. A bit of a heavy workload (especially compared to some of the other honors sections!)
I have throughly enjoyed this course. I thought the course was structured very well. My only suggestion is to further explain the assignments. For example, I think that some people (myself included) were less apt to ask some questions in class about the review of the literature review specifics. I selected agree for # 7 because I feel that I am still developing my understanding about cultural competency, because of that I am not entirely ready to communicate 100% clearly yet; I know that will change as time goes on. I selected agree for #8 because I am still learning about myself, but still have questions regarding my own culture.

I liked how numerous perspectives were covered in this course
I was most grateful of all the speakers that Dr. Chun included throughout the semester. Hearing input regarding the medical field from professionals with all different backgrounds was very inspiring. I would recommend any student planning to apply for medical school to enroll for this course.
I most valued the opportunity to learn from other students and resources outside of the university, rather than from lectures alone.
I really appreciated the field trips to Kokua Kalihi Valley and to Jabsom. It was a great opportunity to meet Dr. Kasuya and Dr. Izutsu learn some hints for our med school application process. I also appreciated the numerous guests that visited us.

This course needs no improvement
Stay amazing! I enjoyed the way the course has been set up and cannot imagine it to be any better.
Nothing. She is a great teacher!
Please keep the blogs on Laulima going. It really made us "read" the assigned materials since otherwise we would've embarrassed ourselves in front of everybody by writing bogus. It's great that we got to see other people's opinions and literally know how "long" they wrote :), so that we could always know what was expected. For your next class I think there should be a mandatory first draft due so that this will force them to not procrastinate writing their report. It might seem a little torturing at first, but I really think this would get them working.

I enjoyed every aspect of this course. It was very enlightening
Thank you for being so nice and helpful!
The small class allowed us to get to know each other very well. I was really glad that this class wasn't extremely difficult or anything just because it was a Writing Intensive and an Upper Division Honors course. Thank you for always being considerate of our busy schedules and being lenient about assigning little homework, extending due dates, and accepting midnight submissions on Tuesdays. Not so many of the teachers I've had were like this :) Also, it was great that you were very quick at replying back to our emails!! I am truly glad that I took this course. I learned a lot from you, the resources you posted, and all of your guest speakers. I will definitely start recommending my other classmates to take this course!

4. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Learning about culture but being able to apply it to the real world. The best was being able to see what we were learning in class being applied to everyday situations.
The trips to other facilities for on-site examples and working together in class to flesh out reports
The field visits
The course gave me a chance to look deeply into problems with cultural competency in the medical field. I would have not known about this issue if I haven't taken this course. Also, I enjoyed the guest speakers, the field trips and also the class discussions.
I was impressed at what the class turned out to be. I think that the site visits and hands-on opportunities were the most valuable. It was especially helpful to learn that the idea of culture as an aspect or component of a med students basic knowledge will be moving up in terms of importance in our education.
Emphasis on ways in which knowledge of cultural beliefs and habits are being implemented in the medical professions.
What I thought was most valuable in this class was that Dr Chun was very flexible about changing the class schedule as and when it was suitable for us. I feel that this made the class more conducive to learning. Also, us having class discussions rather than having just Dr. Chun talk made the topic very engaging for me. I especially appreciated that she invited guest speakers and took us on field trips that were relevant to the class. With regard to the homework, by giving us step by step projects eventually leading up to the final paper and presentation (e.g. lit review summaries, 2 min presentation drafts, etc)I feel that I was definitely more prepared for the final than I would have been otherwise.
5. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Nothing
The 2 books we had to buy
N/A
I found many of the reading materials to be very dry and felt at times that the abstracts were sufficient when it came to understanding the material. I think if there were particular questions that were assigned for each article, I may have gotten more out of them.
Emphasis on medicine, while certainly important to the course and most of the students, was not essential for me.
The books that we were required to get for this course were expensive. Moreover, we did not need to read more than half of each book.
6. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
I got to meet a lot of people in the proffesional field which I hope to be apart of in the future, networking :D
Connections to faculty and information on med school and the importance of what is taught there ie. cultural competency
I learned how to handle diversity on all levels whether at school or at work
I am now aware of the role of cultural competency in the medical field. I will be able to use the knowledge I gained from this course for my future career as a doctor.
It is with the risk of harming, that people often generalize or make assumption about others and as doctors one is taught to do no harm, therefore, it is essential that we learn the proper tools and become culturally competent to deal with as many "types" of patients that we can. I think that I was able to learn a valuable component that puts me ahead of the game when it comes to my post grad education.
Discussion on cultural competency will benefit my as an Asian Studies major.
This class has given me new insight to the world of medicine and some food for thought as to what I would do or stand for in situations that call for cultural competence.
7. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Maria is probably the most valuable resource of this course. She really knows this topic and is willing to help me accomplish all of my goals
Connections to faculty and information on med school and the importance of what is taught there ie. cultural competency. Also the presentation/public speaking training.
The field visits because I was able to look at cultural competency is actually incorporated into the sites and education.
The guest speakers' from various areas.
Uh... repetitive question!!!
Discussion on cultural competency.
Like I said in a previous answer, I found the homework assignments leading us up to our final product to helpful as well as guest speakers we heard from and feild trips we went on.
8. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
Everything was valuable
The textbooks
The way that people in the course separated themselves based on race

Same as question 5!!!
The expensive books.
9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
The course was very well done. The only request that I have is to try and make this a writing intensive and an ethical course.
more focus on the public speakers, readings that directly apply, less repetitive readings
Try no to make people feel that they are below in understanding and capacity.

I think that you did an amazing and more than understanding when it came to unexpected absences. I feel like I was treated as an adult and not a "dumb kid" as far as circumstances and believe that I was able to pull a great deal of knowledge from the opportunity of learning from you!
Perhaps the field trips could be spaced out better.
I think Dr Chun did a good job in teaching this class and making it interesting. She was also very approachable and open to new ideas and suggestions.
10. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Mariaʻs network of people. She had a lot of guest speakers that really inspired me to want to learn
Very knowledgeable about subject and other subjects of interest. Lots of faculty contacts for guest speakers.
Dr. Chun responded to my emails immediately, and was very helpful in her suggestions for the topic of my paper.
Her understanding that life happens!
Very responsive and punctual.
Dr Chun's flexibility and empathy for us. I also felt that she was very willing to go above and beyond to guide us through the course as well as assist us in developing our final paper.
11. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Nothing
one-on-one feed back in person was not very specific, better when received feedback over the internet because very specific

No complaints!!! I would definitely recommend this class/instructor to others!

12. My overall evaluation of this course is...
This was the best course that I have taken here at UHM. I like the way the course was structured. There was a lot of assignments but none of it was work because I interested in all of the case studies.
was very interesting, more interesting than I expected. Good course for anyone interested in medicine or even nursing or culture.
It was great
Great. The course was very interesting, and I am excited to learn more about cultural competency in medical school.
I'm sorry, but I find this survey extremely redundant!
An excellent course, both for those students interested in medicine and those who wish to see the interplay between culture and medicine.
I enjoyed this class greatly and would definitely be interested to take the class again should Dr Chun be teaching it. I would also recommenr her to my friends.
