13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I liked being able to use and learn a variety of farming techniques. It gives you the opportunity to decide which farming methods you would to continue to cultivate.
For this class I enjoyed learning how to drive a tractor and how to operate a bcs machine.
I especially enjoyed learning the proper use and maintenance of the tractor and BCS tiller. The tiller is a good choice for the begining small farmer and learning the proper maintenance and operation of a full size John Deere tractor will help the any future farmer as their business grows or if someone seeks employment on another farm. I didn't think I would be into the table building. Fine woodworking has never been a strong point and not what I was expecting when I signed up for this course but in the end it was a very rewarding and enjoyable experience. The table is very nice as well thanks to the nicer wood made available to us. Will enjoy it in the coming years.
I really like the hands on projects and activities that we did. and the assignments for the course were good.
I loved everything about it, mr. Jacobson is an awesome teacher and does an incredible job of teaching and is get knowledgable.
Driving and learning about tractors
I enjoyed operating and learning about power tools and heavy duty work equipment/vehicles.
got to learn how to drive a tractor and practice safety
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
I wish that we could have spend more driving time on the Farm Equipments.
Strict warnings and firm consequences for anyone under the influence of any substances during machine class due to the increased level of danger to everyone.
a bit more of dedicated time for fewer projects.
None
I am satisfied with this course
more equipment for everyone to get more of a hands on experience but other then that it was good
15. Other comments:
This was a very good class with a good selection of activities pertaining to the field of agriculture. It provided a good overview and introduction in the time allowed to safe operation and maintenance of many of the most used equipment and techniques in a farm operation. I would advise reading all supplemental course materials and manuals on laulima to get the most out of the class. Mr. Jacobson was very knowledgeable and chose the course activities very well.
I believe it was a great course and was beneficial in many ways.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
Preparing a handpicked variety of ornamental and food plants for the next lucky Model Home awardee and family.
I enjoyed discussing irrigation concepts and learning about how to quote jobs. I also liked that we integrated new ideas to the landscape based on the environmental conditions. I liked that we were able to utilize our creative sides and establish rhythm and fluidity with our plants at the model home. It's always good to learn the basics to design.
I liked the pruning of fruit trees and the landscape design for the model home as well as some of the math assignments that would really apply in the real world.
Everything about this course was awesome including Mr. Jacobson!
Learning to prune trees and landscaping the model home
I found the section on irrigation most interesting although it was meant just as an introduction it answered many of my questions and give me the tools to get started on my own projects. I also thought getting us started in thinking in terms of billing, budgets, costs, accurate estimates, etc was great as well as going over the math to figure volumes of different shaped areas and media requirements will come in handy in the future as well.
practice safety and care for plants also learning how to read the lands elevation
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
Needed more time preparing for the model home.
This Landscape Maintenance class had a lot of hands on work, it was a wonderful learning environment to actually be able to put our learning into the field.
No suggestions, very effective methods.
I think there should be a little bit more design concepts and drafting integrated into the course. Of course, I'm only saying that cause I don't have a very strong background or knowledge on how to create a flattering and yet appealing design for any landscape.
make more allotted time for fewer projects.

Field trips to places with exceptional landscaping. Only if the class deserves it.
more equipment for everyone

Overall a good class. There wasn't enough time to learn EVERYTHING there is to know about landscaping but the course covered enough that I feel confident in going out and landscaping on my own, complementing the learned material with in-field experience.
this is a very good course and very benificial

This was an informative class and a great addition to the Ag program. Landscaping is definitely an avenue of employment for some of us after graduation but an understanding of the industry will also be essential to anyone interested in producing plants or other products for that field. Mr. Jacobson was very knowledgeable about this field and went to great length to help those of us who needed assistance with the math portion of the course above securing the services of a math tutor.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
This was my favorite class.
I enjoyed this class because we had a lot of hands on work experience. The whole day was spent at the farm in the soil. Learned many new ways to cultivate plants, make crop recipes and csa boxes.
Fieldwork and growing food crops to be harvested, washed, and dispersed by our class.
Loved that we got to do group work this semester and be assigned a set of different plants to focus growing. I also liked that we were able to start a CSA and feel the pressure of not having enough vegetables or even learn about how important it is to have good quality produce as a farmer. Real-world application of production, to me, is one of the stronger suits in this class. Having this aspect really helped me understand the needs of the consumer and the level of performance that is expected from a lowly farmer such as myself. Also, I liked getting to learn about other crops and methods of production.
I liked the level of production however I would of rather do some stuff as a complete class instead of in groups.
Everything about this course was awesome including Mr. Jacobson!
Time at the farm
This course expanded on the end process of production with an emphasis on record keeping and using a sales model of the CSA. Distributing the boxes and meeting the customers was a great experience as well. I thought using Google Docs as a record keeping and planning tool was a great idea and a valuable experience but under utilized by most of the class. Finally I enjoyed working in my group. The individuals got along well enough and we could work together like adults to accomplish most of our goals. Our group was comprised of students at different experience levels which helped us all to grow together in different ways.
working with the land
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
Time Management Skills. Starting class on time. Plant Sale and Earth Day could have used more student involment in preparations.
None
Something like a "Focus Friday" would be cool. Or a "Mute Monday". You know? Just getting people to be quiet and talk only when necessary really facilitates an environment for observation in the task at hand. Recognizing that the things you are doing all reflect who you are as a farmer can be a very important thing. Music and talking are all fine things in life, however, I feel there is a time and place to socialize and there are times when there needs to be discipline. So, if there was a way to implement something like this (if the class happens to be a rather chatty class) then it would be especially nice.
to spend a bit more time in class to properly discus some plans.
None
As far as what was outlined in the syllabus I have no suggestions. I feel everything we intended to accomplish was perfect for that class. Some of us feel students need to be sent home for the day if there attitude is getting out of hand, disrupting the ability of the other students to concentrate and jeopardizing our farm privileges as well as the image of our program. Also I think it would be good for all students to know they will not be getting credit for attendance if they come late past a certain point. It is disrespectful to those who truly make an effort to be on time. The phrase "eh, Chris knows I was here" is used too often.

The online crop planning thing died out really quick. Not that I'm upset we didn't continue it. Just think we could try and improve that. Other than that, a lot of the students need to apply themselves more. Physical exertion is an inherent part of the farmer life. Don't waste time coming to school if you don't want to learn and work hard physically and mentally. Great class though! LOVED IT ALL.
this was a very good and effective course with a lot of beneficial knowledge.
None
I still feel working in small groups is a good idea but I think we fell short on many projects due to personal incompatibilities, bad behavior and lackluster, commitment by individuals in certain groups. Despite the personal issues of some of our students the class was truly a great learning experience and very relevant. I would suggest being observant asking questions, and taking advantage of Mr. Jacobson's vast experience. We were fortunate enough to also have a very knowledgeable farm coordinator Ande Buskirk who is also a highly educated and experienced agriculturalist and a great source of knowledge.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
The hands on activities help to understand projects before there were started . I like having the handouts for this class rather then buying a text book for the class. Enjoyed working in groups on various tasks.
Projects and assignments were all relevant to what my horticultural goals. Chris Jacobsen provides information accessible to us after classes on laulima which we can review for each subject.
hands-on challenging mentally and physically. there's been some very hot long days makes it challenging at times to make productivity faster but it was fun got construction done learned measurements through the transit. very educational.
Great teacher.
I like the hands on activities we do in class. I enjoyed volunteering at community service events and giving a presentation on what we did to help the community.
I realy enjoyed the hands-on experience.
I liked working along side the other students while constructing something together. I liked the whole program it was like a recap on my past construction experience and I was able to help others to understand some things that may have been confusing to students without a construction background.
overall this set of classes with chris was the begining of a great experience that will continue to inspire me and give me extra drive. he is an excelent teacher and i would recomend any student interested in agriculture to take his course. thank you and i look forward to learning all you have to teach.
I learned a lot about farming
I like being able to go through the entire construction of a greenhouse to completion. Learning different squaring and leveling tools and techniques will be very helpful in the future.
Its a new experience for me on building a greenhouse. I will definitively apply what I've leaned into my future greenhouse project.
What I enjoyed about the greenhouse class is we got to build a greenhouse and do things that were hands on. Also it was a good experience because maybe one day if I plan on building one of my own then I can use my knowledge that I learned in this class.
I like how hands on the course was and how we learned how to use specialty tools to accomplish certain tasks.
Our class was able to successfully build a greenhouse how awesome is that. instead of reading about how to build one we got to engage in hands on activity to construct one. We could have started a little earlier in the semester but it was an amazing experience.
I personally had a hard time this semester for personal reasons but definitely not because of the class or the way it was structured. The class, as all of Chris Jacobson's classes were awesome for what I was able to get out of the scattered attendance I was able to make. He is a great teacher ans the HCC AG course comes highly recommended.
Liked how the construction of the greenhouse required us (the students) to utilize transits and properly use tools to bend and set-up pipes for our greenhouse structure.
Working together out side making food for people to eat.
Liked how the activities such as using the transit and doing work with reading blueprints and scales was helpful. I also liked that we were able to understand the whole process thoroughly.
The hands on experience and working in different groups to fulfill each task.
growing food in the farm was very good for my soul
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
More farming and carpentry tools.
None.
group decision would be more effective. discuss the plan with the class in order to make sure students understand the what should be done and how to do it. do a short and sweet training to students on how to handle their tools, extend the life of the tool last longer. even if we are farmers it doesn't mean we need to treat everything around us so roughly take care of our belongings and tools.
No
More power tools
I would recommend getting more tools and equipment that are necessary for the job description like tape measures, levels, hammers, drill bits, saws etc.
na
More tools available. More batteries or more power drills etc.
Work more and less talking.
to be determined
Yea for myself to make it every day.
NONE
No great class
Somehow managing the students that participate in the course would be helpful. Some people talk way too much and some people just don't know how unbelievably irritable they are being to others. Maybe a good pep talk every once in a while would be great. Sad though, everyone should be mature enough that a pep talk to keep the students focused would be unnecessary.
Use of bigger or more power tools rather than hand tools.

very good class educational
Chris is doing a fabulous job with the resorces that are given
we definitely need to get our selves an igloo water container so we don't have to walk so far to get a drink.

I was pleased with the course overall. Things went as well as could be expected given the abilities and the focus of this particular class.
Students just have to work more efficient.
Overrall it was a great class!!
Chris is an awesome teacher with a real passion for doing things the right way and ensuring quality of work.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I like when we touched on the botany of plants and the videos were informative and enjoyable. The overall education of plants and family names in general will be very helpful.
Learning the names and families of plants
Great teacher.
I liked the scavenger hunt to find plants that were assigned to us, and plants that we could identify. I also enojoyed the field trip to the Botanical Gardens in Onomea, I got to learn about a lot native and canoe plants that live in Hawaii.
Getting to learn about new plants from my own research and learning the names and binomial names of familiar plants I have seen when outdoors.
I enjoyed making powerpoint slides on various plants. They helped me to understand diffrent plant families and plants that grow here in hawaii. Presentations help to understand the slides.
It was very difficult to learn 30+ plants every week but it does stick in your brain weather you think so or not. Driving by plants we are able to at the least recognize the common name.
Plant I.D. helped familiarize me with plant families, genus, and species. The anatomical terms for plants and also how to identify fluorescence in plant growth.
I learned about many new plants that I never heard about and there scientific name and even family names. Another thing I learned was some of the uses of the plants.
I liked how the assignments allowed us to research plants that we normally wouldn't pay any kinds of attention to.
Field Trips
I liked the fact that we were constantly learning about different plants that grasped other students interest. I also found it interesting learning that a lot of different plants where related.
This class is the most exciting and challenging for me. I love learning about plants, thier structure, families etc.
Loved the scavenger hunt halfway through the course. I didn't know a lot of the plants around me and now when I drive home, I'm naming the plants in my head. I love it! My friends think I'm a plant nerd now, and I'm totally okay with that!
enjoyed the pressure to remember lots of plant ids. fun, educational, a bit challenging but it was what we needed to know our plants.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
Maybe less slides or tests to memorize and more emphasis on the quality of the slides and characteristics of plant families. Pictures were often too vague for us to identify if we saw it in real life. Maybe a test just on families and characteristics.

Have a back to basic refresh course for the new students. A pronounciation course would have been helpful.
no I thought the course was great as is I learned a lot from this course and will definitely use this knowledge through out my life's journey.
For Myself to make it every day.
I liked the field trips and excursions to go see different gardens and what not, but I think that sometimes the trips were taken advantage of by some people. In other words, I think sometimes the focus for the trip wasn't for the purpose of education, rather for fun. Recognizing that there's a time and place for fun and work is something this group of students really has a hard time with. Glad that the teacher is great with the students and getting them focused, but still yet, it's sad that the maturity level of the students is just misaligned with the level expected of them.
very good educational class. none to think of to change this class.

Great class. I am glad I was able to participate in the course and I thought that the plant ID tests were great. I'm not one to squeal, but I just have to let the instructor know that there were people cheating on the tests. I know, it sucks when people do that. But it is what it is. You only cheat yourself when you don't study and do honest work. I guess it'd just be nice to see a little more law enforcement you know? Sure is a little upsetting when you work hard to get good grades and others are getting "good grades" despite the lack of effort.
challenging but fun and educational.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
Very fun to interact with your plants and have them clean after harvest and able to take some home. I love all the methods of growing crops. I gave a reason to stay away on what I do now.
We did alot of things that were hands on and thats the best way I learn. Also we grew many different types of vegtables which we sold, donated to the food bank and we could take home some for our family.
Great teacher.
I liked the hands on activities we did at the University of Hawaii Farm. I enjoyed the Waipio Valley field trip to learn about the production of wet land Taro, and also the process of making Poi.
Being able to learn different techniques of growing. Working with other students in group activities.
I liked planting and harvesting weekly as a group. I also liked learning about different crop planning and planting methods. Most of all I liked the fact that we got to eat the fruit of our labor. we also donated to the food basket. I also gave a lot of vegetables to my friends and family and they were very thankful to see what we have been doing in school.
This course provided in-depth crop planning and scheduling on specific crops such as corn, lettuce, mixed green varieties, soybeans, and a wide array of viable cultivars. All that was planted was also harvested throughout the semester which allowed us to be exposed to some marketing as well.
planting and harvesting
I liked the hands on aspect of this course. Best to learn production to jump in there and experience the trials and tribulations that came by doing it.
I liked how we were able to grow a wide variety of crops, gaining a wide variety of knowledge about these crops and as a result of our successful and bountiful harvests we were able to donate large amounts of fresh locally grown food to our local food basket.
Loved learning about good agricultural practices and hands on crop production methods.
I liked how the course allowed us to learn how to grow plants and to manage our harvesting in a day-to-day basis. It also interesting to know what the modern farmers of today face.
I loved the aspect of getting our hands dirty and up close and personal with a variety of plants. We're talking zuchinni, cucumber, carrots, lettuce, corn, araimo, taro, radishes, soybeans, mizuna, arugula, eggplant, etc etc etc. There was so much content in the class that I was so stoked about gettign to learn about certain intricacies of the plants. It was great. The projects were perfect for the class and the assignments were just as good. It really helped me to focus on what crops or plants I really want to focus on when I'm starting my own farm later down the road.
Planting the crops and using different methods to rear and cultivate plants was interesting, but weekly harvests were always something to look forward to.
enjoyed hands-on activities out-doors getting involved with learning how to farm and harvest with soil or hydroponics.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
Plan better on the crop we choose and how to get rid of them.
No
A farm calender to track planting and harvest dates.
we could use better field prep strategies to lesson weeding and fertilizing and we could also come up with better planting and harvesting times and methods however I feel as if we did great.
More assignments or mini readings assigned about crop scheduling for particular plants we are growing followed by more discussions could help motivate and or benefit our plantings in class versus relying on the individuals' intent to want to read more on the side.
none
none
more practice on planning and crop rotations
For me to make it every day!
NONE
I don't really know how to improve the course but rather to maybe put a little more time into teaching us how to plan better. I suppose that is a personal thing though, and not the teachers fault. I guess, it would just make me feel more comfortable planning on my own if I was able to see a clearly organized plan in my face, taught to me in a methodical manner.
None, this course is doing very well.
none to think of.

Great class again. I loved working in the field and seeing plants grow and battling the pests and what not that challenged us as student farmers. I'm looking forward to the second section of this class.
In this course, there were an array of stations to choose from such as hydroponic systems, use of greenhouses and irrigation systems, companion plants and pest control, and direct field seeding and care.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
i feel we learned even more than the original curriculum was intended to teach
Learning about the different types of methods involved with marketing even when trying to market a single product
We talked about local markets and businesses which i liked because it seems more relateable. The market planning guide told us how to create a plan to successfully market our business, product, or service. Material that we will certainly use in the present and future.
I liked how we studied current markets relevant to Hawaii and all of the local businesses that we discussed, relating their marketing strategies to the information in the book. This is a much more realistic approach to mastering the basics of agricultural marketing in our lives.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?

More information on local markets and pricing objectives. Different material then whats in the book.
I suggest that you take the class to examples of local businesses more. You told us about the Sugar Cane Cafe, you took us to John's farm, you took us to the farm quite a lot, too. However, you should take the class to more local farms and added-value agricultural businesses in the future of the course. In this way, the students will be more motivated to learn about the subject, and you could help them understand how the products are handled from first-hand observation.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
Hands on work and learning
Working in a class group is very interesting. More informative to work with others than to work alone.
I enjoyed the in-class discussions.
This course has taught me a lot of new information of which i did not know before. The sustainable book that we had to read was covered the production, distribution, management and research of agriculture and being sustainable. This course is like a never ending waterfall that examines the basic production of your food, as well as any concerns about the quality and safety of it.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
more farming time
NONE
A little more exciting and different material instead of whats exactly in the book.

I thought I wouldnʻt like this course but I ended up learning a lot and am now interested in landscaping
Really liked how we landscaped a home for a future family for the Community College project. Very good to see a barren area be turned into a beautiful landscape
This landscaping class was my favorite out of all the agriculture classes offered this semester. It just opened my eyes to different landscapes around our island and its uses within.

I liked everything we did! Especially all the seed planting and farm work we did!
Enjoyed everything we did
I liked doing the feild expirements, very good class!
its really helping me out about my career that ive chosen. as my first year in this class i can already see the output of what ive learned here.
I found all the above subjects mentally invigorating.
The experiments we did were very educational. It was cool to learn about the different types of soil and the different nutrient requirements.
Like how the assignments and projects have detailed information on how soil is placed into different classifications.
i liked that we did hands on things and that he played funny videos or videos so we understand the course!
Mr. Jacobsen, is very knowledgable and willing to help. He was able to teach difficult material in a way that was understandable.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I liked that we go out in the field and did our own plots and learned what the soil needs to grow and how much time it takes to grow our plants.
was filled with applicable activities and good hands on work.
Having and maintaining my own plot/garden was very enjoyable. And when my garden died it made me realize how important it is to pay attention in class because the way to keep the plant alive may just very well be in tht days lecture.
This class is very hands-on, going outdoors and planting in my garden plot was my facvorite part. Seeing yours crops grow from little tiny seeds into a big plant made all the hand work worth while.
Labs at the farm were great!
What I liked about this course is I learned a lot of information and Chris helped me and gave me answsers to what I needed to know. I also enjoyed working in group discussions and activities with others which made this course fun. Even when we covered on how to do different types of graphing and air layering I found that exciting and cool.
learned alot
Like how had to take a hands-on experience on self-sustained growing.
I really enjoyed growing individual garden plots and the poinsettia.
Great hands on assignments.
Going to the farm, meeting new people and learning about one of the things that I really want to learn about is what I enjoyed most from this course.
i learned and put everything into reality which is making a real small business on my greenhouse. i already have markets for all my crops.
Jacobs was very knowledgable and easy to approach

learned alot
I liked learning about all of the graphs that we did for the projects, and the fact that we actually had to make a viable business plan that we would want to pursue was very interesting. I think I'm going to start my business next year. I also liked the study guides. They were very helpful for the exams. The extra food was really nice, too.
Very beneficial learning how to create a business plan and how to manage differnt aspects of the business.
Project on how to create and manage our own small business plan was interesting to do even though this wasn't my best project.
helped me prepare a ag plan for the first time.
this class is my favorite is because i love to deal with numbers specially on making Agriculture connect into a business.
Like that I learned a lot of new business terminology, overall methods to writing a business plan, and ways to better my business plan through proper R&D and goal setting.
even though i hated the homework it helped me a lot to learn how much it taks to run your own business!
his the right one for the job.----------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------.
I learned and seen the business side of Ag and what it takes to make sure your business goes well.

He's a very nice guy, and I learned a lot from him. He was very helpful in and out of class about agricultural questions that I'd ask him.

Overall a very helpful and immersive course that allowed us as students to evolve by creating a business plan from scratch based on our individual research, unique interests, and then shared them amongst peers.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
antomology
i liked the fact that there are benificial pests i never knew that before and how to identifi them
We studied a lot of bugs under the microscope and had to identify them. We also studied weeds and made a collection to study and present to the class. We studied a variety of pest control methods for plants, weeds, and animals. Old techniques, new techniques, organic pesticides, traditional pesticides and how to properly use these methods. We were able to pick a pest, study it, write a report on it and present it to the class. We learned a lot from everyones individual reports.
This class was very interesting and fun. I liked learning about different pest management, controls of plant diseases, fungi, nematodes and weeds. I also loved the videos we watched about the underworld. It was fun learning about different insects, their lifecycle and how they either benefit or damage the plants. We looked at different insect under a microscope and had to identify which family group the insect belonged to, that was awesome.
I liked some of our assignments, and our presentations.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
None.
No, the class was awesome!
less lectures.

Enjoyed all of Mr. Jacobsen's classes. We did a lot of work in all of his classes but it was worth it because the work was interesting and fun. I think it is because Mr. Jacobsen has great passion for what he does and enjoys every moment of it. He gives us confidence because he believes in us.
Thanks for this class.
Mr. Jacobson is a great teacher; I notice how hard he works and how much he is willing to help us. Mr. Jacobson is easy to get along with and talk to. He is always there when I have a question and with all the hard work he does, I never heard him complain.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I like the fact that Mr. Jacobsen introduced us to Quickbooks. Owning your own busines, especially an agricultural business is not that easy and can be very risky. Mr.Jacobsen made us feel more confidant and he believes that we are able to be successful if it's what we really want to do. We looked at a variety of different marketing strategies and also studied the SBDC website. We were able to research an agricultural product of our choice and write a report on it and share it with the class. We studied agricultural marketing here in Hawaii, the U.S. Mainland, Holland and a few other places.

Chris is very understanding, you just have to be willing to keep that open communication. He is also very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his classes. He has visions that are going to improve the agriculture program at HawCC.
always the practical
In this class class i learn a lot of difference method and technique in marketing i love this class because of presentations that we are doing and learning about a good way of marketing that will help us in the future.
I liked learning about marketing, and presenting or projects and listening to our classmates presentation.
I liked learning about different marketing channels, how different businesses and stores do the handling, preparing and shipping their agricultural products.
The best part was the videos that showed great examples of the course objective.
I liked that we got to learn about marketing and other things relating to marketing.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
None. Wonderful class. We all learned a lot and I think we have more confidence in ourselves and are more positive toward the agricultural industry and gained more respect for it.
more role play e.g. products from farm to market via post harvest
I bet every semester, Chris's classes are going to only get better and better
none
we should do more presentation because its exciting and we learn a lot of things from the other students and u mr chris
Less long lectures. I think the teacher should realize when the students are learning or having a hard time staying awake. Otherwise, everything is great!
I think lectures were too long and not so enjoyable.
Maybe a field trip to a nursery and or farmers market to learn further about management.
This course was great. There is nothing to improve.

interesting class

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I liked having in class discussions. I also enjoyed doing hands on projects!
what i like about this class is that we learn how to grow crops using natural and organic material and i also like that we learn how to work as a team.. mr chris is a good teacher he's always ready to teach us student he never gets lazy. Overall mr chris is a really good teacher=]]
practical in the field
The hands on work to learn other techniques to improve was most useful.
I liked being on the farm and work with vegetables, learning how to take care of them. I liked how we had the freedom to do experiments on our plots. I also loved the students report project that we had to do on sustainable practices in other parts of the world. I learned a lot about the place i chose for my project and it was very interesting.
all people involved in class were cool instructor was always professional
I enjoyed the discussions in class that related to the subject matter. Watching videos and interviews was helpful to see the application of the learning material.
i liked everything about the class i have learned many new thing in this class
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
I will say less lectures. Maybe, more hands on learning or ask questions to class to provide more intrest on th topic.
we should do fieldtrip and work at the farm more
more hands on practices
None.
May be go on field trips where people do somekind of sustainable projects or practices.
insrtucte has class incontrol
Instead of reading from the book in class, I would have been more interested in an actual presentation/ lecture/ discussion. The book itself was complicated, repetitive and dry. The subject matter was interesting, but it was hard for me to understand when presented in the manner this book was written.

I like the hands on activities; such as going into the labratory and growing mushrooms.
what i like about this class is that were learning a lot of informations about sustainability that will help us make a differences in AG invironment.
the practical work
The hands on work in the lab was best.
We did labs on growing oyster mushrooms, which is the coolest thing ever. It was awesome to see mushrooms grow almost right before your eyes. I learned how to prepare the mix for mushroom procedure. They taste awesome too.
mushrooms
In the lab, I really enjoyed having my own garden plot on the farm. It was exciting to see how different every student's plot was and be able to learn from each other. We also learned useful and applicable information hand-on such as making IMO's, composting, and growing mushrooms. The hands-on aspect of this class was informative and enjoyable.
hands-on experience help put the course work lessons into play
everything
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
I would suggest easing off of the long lectutres (sometimes its hard for some people to stay awake).
more hands on practices
None.
No
more mushrooms
I would have chosen a different course book that was easier to follow and understand. It had good information, but was difficult to read. The lab assignments were interesting and educational.
improve group activities at the farm with a more holistic approach; enhancing our ability to learn together as a group; to render lessons with a better understanding of applications and techniques; with thoughts to pass on the knowledge of lessons learned well

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
This class was awesome. I love landscaping and this class really satisfied my heart. We had a home to model, we build a key garden at the Kamoleao and we build a little flower garden with a fountain right on our campus. It was very fun and beneficial for me.
I learned that I could actually draw decent and draw to scale a landscape design plan. The model home that our class landscaped in Panaewa turned out beautiful and I'm sure the tenants will be very happy. They are also very fortunate to have a wide variety of plants in their landscape. The plants include; Cordyline terminalis, Cordyline terminalis(miss andrea/variegated), Phymatosorus scolopendria, Nephrolepis cordifolia, Catharanthus roseus, Breynia disticha, Metrosideros polymorpha, Aechmea blanchetiana, Colocasia esculenta and a few more. We also built a keyhole garden at Kamoleao. Our landscape project at Hawaiʻi Community College was exciting. We finally got the opportunity to display the fountain that we made from semesters age (Jacobsen's first semester) This class was fun and exciting and a lot of hard work which felt good.
I liked our projects we did. We got to landscape a house and make a key garden at a community project landscape. This class was hard work, and fun!
I enjoyed working with a team of students to create beautiful landscape projects.
this class is fun we had to work outside a lot and we work as a team that makes this class a fun class. we made a lot of differences by helping cleaning our invironment to make it more beautiful=]
This atmosphere was always possitive. I also liked working outside.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
Just continue doing different projects at different places.
None. Jacobsen is a wonderful teacher.
no.
fieldtrip and outside work
course content timeline with hands on activities e.g. water irrigation system designs to building it with materials and tools in hand in hand
no
15. Other comments:
Thank you for this class.
I just want to say, what a wonderful job Hawaiʻi Community College did in hiring Mr. Jacobsen. It really makes a difference in the quality of your education when you have a great teacher. I don't like to call him an instructor. He teaches and you learn from him. Mahalo.
Good teacher!

all where good
jacobson made fun to learn about soil
lots of field work. the class felt more like a lab.
I really liked doing the experiment exercise. It was very fun doing it and learning. Overall i liked this class because i learned a lot about different types of soils and how they work. This was a very fun class to have.
It was all new to me, and I liked that. I love having a garden. It's the biggest joy of the class.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
more field trips
No there is no suggestions from me to improve this course. Mr. Jacobsen did a great job at teching this course.
Maybe be a little stricter, Mr Jacobsen. I know that's sacrilege for a student to say, but... I know one of the reasons I came to school was because I was having trouble self-motivating. I would like to see more daily exercises or worksheets or something to sort of keep me engaged on a daily basis so that I don't have the chance to start pushing things off and slipping. Being rigid with a note taking regime and really instilling that notion is something I would like in myself when it comes to record keeping.
15. Other comments:
good teach willing to work with you.
I think Mr. Jacobsen does a hard job well. I appreciated him looking things up when I had questions he couldn't answer on the spot. It showed he cared about my education and interests.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
Hands-on garden work/learning
The field trips were an inspired idea.
GOING TO THE FARM
Garden plots were a fun way to create something all by yourself without the help of the instructor.
I liked all of the activities we did on our farm. I liked working on my plot and taking care of it. We did a few fiel trips and that was fun. We did airlayering, cuttings and graphtings. I learned a lot in this class about plants and genesis types and propagations.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
I would like to see more hawaii oriented stuff. It's hard to relate to corn and soybean forecasts out here. I would also like to see more class discussion time. The long bullet point presentations can become monotonous.
LESS LECTUREING
More time at the farm to learn better.
No. Mr Jacobsen has a very good way of instructing and teaching this class. He treaches it in such a way that is easy to understand and follow through.
15. Other comments:
I enjoyed the garden plots and think that is one of the best parts of the course is having the hands- on opportunity to apply the skills being taught. I hope they always have the gardens..
OVERALL GOOD CLASS
Enjoyed the class. It was really fun to experience growing your own plants without any outside help.

We had to do a business plan exercise and that was a really good thing to learn. We had to set up our own business plan as we would do in a real world. To me,l it was a learning experience and i enjoyed doing it, even through there was a lot of work needed to be done and a lot of committment.
practical exercizes feild trips
Loved the garden.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
more labs, hands on activity, less lectures
No.
I would recommend buying the book..
I would really like a more philosophical approach to this subject. I think ethics and more alternative modes of commerce should be discussed. I think it is important to suss out the moral complications endemic to the world of business early on before bad habits can be formed. I really would like to see fewer, or at least shorter, power point lectures
15. Other comments:
I really saw a lot of growth in Mr. Jacobsen from last year. I saw someone try and succeed to fill a role as professor with not much prep time. There was a sharp learning curve and his interest in student life did not go unnoticed. The wonderful idea of the G.R.O.W. club and other such actions prove to me that Mr. Jacobsen is endeavoring to apply himself 100% to his position as educator. It's refreshing to see someone care about their job.

19. If you were teaching this course: a. What would you do to improve it? b. What would you change?
I would learn more agriculture and natural farming techniques. I would ask students if they want a conference to see how they can improve their grade. Overall, I see Mr. Jacobson is trying and is doing well; especially considering this is his first semester teaching.
nothing, class was appropriate
I would try to integrate more of the school colleges into one project and have everyone learn a little of everything. I would also have plots allotted to a student on entering the program. This would encourage a sense of ownership and foster some things along those lines, but mostly, it's because to learn most of the concepts and see things done in the real-world with the hands on approach some plants simply need more time to show their full life cycles. Not to mention all the other things going on with the soil. I think that assigning plots for the whole 2 years the program takes is the only way to go. I would also make the schedule more malleable. Persons have lives people!
Improvement is not needed. Mr. Jacobsen has given us equal amounts of time for learning in the classroom as well as hands on assignments.
I wouldn't change a thing. Mr. Jacobsen did an excellent job on his first semester of teaching our class.
I would have done more on the learning of the tracter.
I wouldn't change anything. There is no need for improvement.Mr. Jacobsen did a wonderfull job in his first semester. I hope he continues to teach at the HCC.
class time should be shorter
more group work.
better lecturing
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
Teaching methods are okay.
well exacuted
I honestly think Mr. Jacobsen is a really good guy that can teach people a lot from his stores of knowledge. I have a personal beleif that a teacher should be given all freedoms to hone their method and the student has the determining power of giving it credit by accepting that person as their teacher. What I think of the teacher is I would accept Mr. Jacobsen as my teacher again.
He teaches very well, stepping back and taking the time notice each students weeknesses and helping them to improve.
Mr. Jacobsen seems to be a reasonable person, fair and knowledgeable. If there is someting that he does not know very well he studies the subject matter and then he is prepared to teach it to us in class. Mr. Jacobsen has that extra charisma and motivation to work with his students to learn a wide range of skills.
I thought Jacobson was a very helpful teacher.
Mr. Jacobsen is a smartand knowledgeable person. He use great methods to help us,the students, understand and learn the subject. He uses great examples and fun projects. He is very organized and always explaines things well. If needed, he wouldn't mind going beyond just to make sure we understood the course and how and what we need to do.
He did a great job. we learned alot of new things this semester.
everything he does fits all the in class work.
good over all. i enjoy the hands on class work and teaching, but he needs to improve lecture skill.
21. Has he/she contributed to your general knowledge or to learning job skills?
Yes, but I wanted to learn more about planting.
he sure has
Yes
This class has taught me more than i already knew, and will most likely help me in future opputunities.
Yes! Just a few skills we actually learned hands on: -chain saw, we cut down several trees, pruners -drove tractors, lawnmowers, tillers -cut metal, did some welding(made a fishing pole stand)made stakes for farm -used drills, changed implements on tractors. -ETC...
yes
Yes, Mr. Jacobsen has contributed to my general knowledge and learning job skills.Even though it was his first semester, he made it fun to be in his class. For example: when we have math problems, I really don't like math, he would teach it in a way that really helps me to understand it well. He would make sure everyone understands how to do it.
Yes, some what
yes.
yes
22. Other comments:
mr.jocobsen was very understandablea and teaches well
I think this school did a disservice to the teacher and to the students by leaving the position vacant until a week or so before the semester began. I would hope a university could at least appear to have it more together than that. It's not as though the retirement of Mr. Ikeda after 39 yrs. of teaching just came out of the blue, now is it?
This class was a very fun and interesting. Mr Jacobsen creates a great learning environment with his up beat attitude and willingness to work with whomever, one on one.
He is an excellent teacher, why not keep him. We need good teachers. they make all the difference.
Mr.Jacobsen was very patient with us when we practiced driving tractors. He is a fun and very reasonable teacher.
He's a good teacher, definately the best I've had so far.
overall i like the way we do practical. it was very helpful when we actually put hands on. i like it and was good

19. If you were teaching this course: a. What would you do to improve it? b. What would you change?
I'm not quite sure, however I enjoy more hands on learning rather than lectures.
Hostile take over of upper campus resources.
better lectures
Shorten the class time.
Not a thing. Our class did an excellent job landscaping the model home in Keaukaha. Other students who did this landscaping class in the past said that our class did the best job and had the nicest landscape design.
I would not do any improvemet. Mr. Jacobsen knows so much and he was great in this course.
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
Everything is good, except I would include students in lectures more if it needs to be done. (Take turns reading maybe).
Friendly, well liked. Expresses ideas in a graspable manner.
lecture skill need improving
He's great!
Wonderful teacher. Keep him. Very knowledgeable and what he does not know well he studies the subject matter and we all learn together in class.
Mr. Jacobsen is good with the students. He always spends a lot of time teachind us great things.
21. Has he/she contributed to your general knowledge or to learning job skills?
I've learn various things, but a lot of the handouts are long and hard to remember with everything else.
Yes, i have gained hands on experience. I have also learned the theories of landscaping, and how they do not always apply in the real world. So you have to meet the challenge.
yes
Yes. Our landscaping project came out beautiful. We all had our opinions on how things should be done and it all worked out well. We grew a lot of plants and rejuvenated a lot on the farm that were just dying. Cleaned the greenhouses on the farm. We built a fountain from scratch. We mixed and poured cement to make the fountain and decorated it. You have to see it. It is beautiful.
I always wanted to know how to prune plants and Mr. Jacobsen has taught me well.
22. Other comments:
Mr. Jacobson is a good teacher, and he is trying to meet our standards.
Good teacher!
Mr. Jacobsen is an excellent teacher. He would be an asset to this college. We all need a good teacher to keep us motivated.
I love landscape class and i like rthe way Mt. Jacobsen teaches it.

19. If you were teaching this course: a. What would you do to improve it? b. What would you change?
This is the class I would like to learn more about natural farming! I would teach natural farming to make a big difference. Local products, no chemicals, healthy food and a healthy environment. I'd say this is the best way to go with a Tropical Agriculture class.
niothing
nothing
Not a thing. I grew Mei Quing Choi cabbage and Joi Choi cabbage. I had three harvest of each cabbage. Learned a lot from Mr. Jacobsen about insects that were eating my cabbage. I did all natural farming and Mr. Jacobsen was very knowledgeable on what products I could use for my natural farm and to take care of the pests.
shorten the class time.
I am not quite sure if i would change anything in this course. So far i think Mr. Jacobsen is doing a good job.
I would improve this class by making the days shorter.
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
Mr. Jacobson is a good teacher, and is trying hard to help us learn.
excellent
very hands on... good, needs more lecture skill
fair, yet challenges us to do more. Energetic and encouraging.
I learned alot of new thins this semester.
Mr. Jacobsen always likes to look at our plots where we grow our vegetables. If needed, he always gives us ideas on how to improve our crop. He knows a lot about pests and he tells us which method works for different pest menagements.
I like how these classes are really hands on. It allows you to learn about something, while constructing it.
21. Has he/she contributed to your general knowledge or to learning job skills?
In agriculture we learn things that will help us save money. Such as, growing food, fixing things such as irrigation, welding, chain sawing etc. I think saving money by having the knowledge of all these things is like a job or maybe better.
extremlly
yes lots of info on pests and insects
Yes. Learned a variety of skills as I said on my ohter surveys.
He thought me about pests, soils and plants. How to work with them, what they need, and how to take care of them .
Yes, this semester I learned alot about mushrooms or fungi. Not only what they are, but how to cultivate them.
22. Other comments:
Mr. Jacobson is willing to be a good teacher. I hope everything works out for the best.
very good teacher
Mr. Jacobsen is a great teacher. He did and excellent job on his first semester. I learned more than I did in the past. Just not stop moving from one project to another. It was great and the right timing, not overwhelming.
Great Teacher!
Mr. Jacobsen has contributed a lot of his skills, knowledge, and time to us and he surelly did a good job.
