Knowledge of sustainability.
I benefitted from this class because I was able to relearn much of the things I learned in elementary school and middle school.
expanded my knowledge about the basics of Biology
The main thing that I got from this course that will benefit me personally is technology. Everything for this course was pretty much online, and this was the first class I took that required everything to be online. After taking this course, I am now able to complete online tasks and understand how to do things online.
I could say I have better knowledge of science in society and how to be more sustainable for myself.
If I pass the class, I will have one less class to take. Yay!
n/a
A lot of environmental knowledge was in my opinion, very interesting and added upon what I knew about the subject previously.
A better understanding of sustainability and it's importance in our society.
It was well taught
Sustainability, the seven methods of sustainability.
Sustainability
-more understanding of some biology content -finding other ways of learning the materials than just from the prof. lectures
I got my three biology credits.
Credit for db requirement. Knowledge of sustainability.
Knowledge to help me make sustainable choices.
The need to recycle and not physically waste things that could effect our ecosystem. SUSTAINABILITY!!!
I learned the different characteristics that are affecting the Earth and biomes, which in turn, affect us. This will help me to be more aware.
Things I learned from this course that will benefit me personally would be sustainability. It was my favorite topic and I learned how to better myself and the economy. I also learned how to help Hawaii's environment and to teach my family/friends about it. The things about STD's and Cancer also benefitted me. I learned more about those topics.
Some credits...nah just kidding besides that I also learned quite a bit about Sustainability and increased my own awareness of our global situation as well as learning quite a few things about biology.
My knowledge on renewable energy and global warming has increased.
I learned a lot of topics that I never looked into before. Ex: stem cells and GM food
I learned about sustainability and how there are many ways to maintain a sustainable life. Global Warming awareness was also brought to my attention.
The things that benefited me the most personally in the course was the introduction of sustainability tactics that i can use in everyday life to reduce and be aware of my negative impact on the enviroment.
Sustainability and the environment
Nothing really changed my personality but I did learn a lot.
Instructor really cares about me by sending me email and reminding me if I forget to submit homework or forum submission.
we have to change the way we live to save and change what is happening in the world
I now understand sustainability a lot better, and the things I've learned in this class will help me to make "greener" decisions every day. Also, I plan to incorporate sustainability in my career the best I can since I am now aware of the growing issues facing our world today.
Learning about the current environment and society issues that I was never aware of before.
I can finally explain Dams in my words! But on a serious note, the information about sustainability was amazingly helpful and eye opening.
I learned a lot about sustainability and how to preserve and protect the earth.
I learned a lot about sustainability.
I gained knowledge about my homeplace(Hawai'i) and how I can improve my ways to create less destruction to the environment.
Learning about sustainability will personally benefit me.
Personally, I learned about communicating with the professor effectively to ensure that my grade will not be jeopardized. But I also learned about global warming and ways to be more sustainable.
i now have a better understanding of things like sustainability and how it plays a role in our lives.
I learned a lot about society and sustainability. I think it is very important to learn about sustainability, especially with so many issues going on, and I have to say that I learned a lot about it. I also learned the basics of biology, everything from animals to cells to plants.
nothing, i learned it all already
i learned how to make my house sustainable
None that I can think of.
I learned that humans messed up the Earth and that we are in a great deal of trouble if we don't take action.
I learned how to incorporate sustainable practices in my life
-- snipped --
Global warming.
I learned a great deal about sustainability, she did a fantastic job explaining and presenting material. Great Professor.
Sustainability is a big thing that I received from this course. There are many things that is not realized right now.
I feel that I now have a better understanding of what sustainability means and how it effects my life.
Knowing specific information on our ecosystems and the effects global warming is causing.
It just made me consider my actions more.
The emphasis on sustainability has inspired me to make more eco-friendly choices and support environmentally friendly processes. One of the videos she showed really cemented this concept for me as it described the way of the early Hawaiians: "kuleana", a word encompassing responsibility and privilege. While we may use the earth's resources for ourselves, we must not treat it cruelly. It is our privilege to be nurtured by the land, thus we must care for it as it cares for us.
Biology was incorporated into real life experiences. Everyday experiences like eating and over populations. I started to independently think about our future, and that is the goal right? It wasn't homework or a chore, but I began to think and to care and I think that one of the greatest lessons of all.
I learned how to more sustainable
How to be more sustainable and shrink my carbon footprint.
I feel that learning about sustainability will help benefit the world in the future. I have the knowledge of sustainable action and the affects I will try to be more sustainable.
Basic knowledge of biological science and it's relations in our society. Also knowledge on current growing sustainability matters and other situations involving the future of our planet.
That I learned a lot from sustainability and conserving energy and waste management and etc.
I learned about the various environmental issues that are occurring right now due to my lifestyle and the actions that I take on a daily basis. Knowing these issues will help me to change my lifestyle in order to preserve our natural resources that are depleting. I will be able to make a difference in this world.
Before this course, I did not know much about biology. However after this course, I now know more the subject. I was thinking about different majors, and although this course was interesting I do not think that I will major in this course.
going green!
Sustainability
Now I know how to better live my life through her teachings
I ended up learning about how viruses can end up in a person and learning about sea level rise.
know more about biology
I learned more about sustainability which I can apply to everyday life in local communities.
Learning about sustainability and the environment, as well as the need to take care of the earth
I really had chance to understand the concepts of Biology and also natures. I seriously started to think of recycling, so i think it can be one of my benefit as personally.
Personally I've taken a lot of bio classes so i didn't take a lot from this course. I did like the professor very much. She went over the all of the material very well.
-- snipped --
I will have a more sustainable lifestyle
Forum submissions helped to open me up to articles I would otherwise have missed.
I learned how important sustainability is within society. I learned that I need to be more aware of how much resources I use and that I need to conserve.
All of the information that i got from this course will benefit me personally because it just made me aware of what's going on in the world and ways that we harm it, also how we can help it.
I learned a lot about the impact we have on our environment and the importance of helping to maintain and better it. I didn't think I cared so much before but after really looking at the issues during the course, I feel very strongly about it.
I learned more about living more sustainably and making a difference in the current world that is slowly degrading due to human activities.
Nothing

21. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Go slower.
-- snipped --
I think how the course is taught is excellent and nothing should be changed.
She could have gone over things a little slower and explain some things a little more because it was confusing.
Try to teach within the level of the students. We are not all experts in meteorology, for example. Simplify the concepts a bit and don't test too in- depth.
Her teaching is good, not bad but not really great. I think if she got the students more engaged or did something to make the lectures a bit more interesting then that would be really great. For a 101 class, you're going to have a lot of students with a smaller attention span than others, with many people not paying attention or not engaged in lecture it can be slightly discouraging for the students that are trying to listen. Also since the slides are up on laulima, many students don't take notes and don't follow along in lecture. I think to increase student involvement and participation, powerpoint slides should be available like a day before the lecture then taken down after lecture, then maybe reposted like at the end of the week. That way it will motivate students to prep early for the lecture since it won't be up later and to take notes in class since it won't be up after.
-- snipped --
She needs to be clearer on what is going to be tested on and what isn't. Because there is a new topic discussed every class, it is unrealistic to expect students to absorb all material. There needs to be an emphasis on what students need to know versus what is appropriate course material.
Better communicate homework and if you keep the forum submission better communicate the due dates.
I have no suggestions for improvement. I truly enjoyed Ms. Serghi's class.
less information on the powerpoint slides and go slower.
Maybe not to cram so much information and material into one semester. I thought all the material was interesting and useful. I just wish it was spaced out a bit because there is so much to learn in such a short period of time. Cramming the material does not help me remember it later when I finish the course.
Just slow down when you speak
By providing more real life examples to what we are learning.
-- snipped --
She can try to be more clear when explaining some material.
teach it like it is... a lecture.
Be more creative when talking about the material and to communicate more effectively
Make power points less crowded. Most of the time the slides are too crowded so I end up not reading everything. Make things more interesting because usually it is just lecture.
-- snipped --
Slow down a little in the lectures.
I would like if she communicated with us more during class, and did not just read off of the power points. It would make class a lot more enjoyable to go to.
Letting us know which aspects of the lectures are important to remember. Slow down during lectures.
Some of the topics that were covered could have been taught in a more clear way. The lectures were understandable, but the powerpoint slides had too many words on it. Some of the lecture presentations were really fast, and I wasn't able to take notes. When giving lectures, she can make the powerpoint slides less wordy and present the lecture a bit slower so that everyone can understand what is being taught.
-- snipped --
I know that Biology is boring for most people so can you please try to make it more interesting and engaging? Maybe more "hands-on", but not necessarily super difficult assignments?
n/a
More notifications for assignments and quizzes etc. and when they're due.
More exciting
Talk slower, put less words on the slides, be more fun.
Speak slowly.
-- snipped --
She could slow down her lectures a bit.
Nothing much. It was pretty straight forward
Give more out of class resources
More activities or be more interactive.
Better ways to make a point, too monotone. Maybe more activities that will force students to get more involved.
Shorten your powerpoints into bullet points instead of paragraphs and I feel like you should emphasize more on things that will be on the test. Talk a little slower and clearer. More examples like for the punnett squares. Stuff like that should have more examples or worksheets for the students to better understand it.
Speaking a little more clearly that is all. Maybe not get distracted as much. She did not get distracted very often nor do I feel it detracted from my learning experience but since she did a great job I can't think on too many things to improve on.
I strongly believe the class would be much better if the power points had less information, and only included the most important things we need to know.
It would be nice if the instructor didn't rush through the material sometimes.
-- snipped --
More Iclicker questions involves the class more. Videos that load faster are important too.
involve more videos in the class. keep on the online test because it is so much effective for student and for Instructor to grade it.
biology is such a broad topic it is hard to gain a clear understanding of the course when we moved so fast because we had so many topics
She covered so much material very quickly. I enjoyed learning about everything, but it felt somewhat rushed to fit into one lecture.
I think reviewing a little more sometimes on previous lectures would be helpful.
She teaches well for a 200 student course. The technical difficulties of the microphone are standard for lecture halls.
Less online assignments, no icliker
-- snipped --
Provide more visuals in here powerpoint lectures.
To go slower on the powerpoint slides.
provide better instructions on things like online tests.
In such a large lecture, it is nice to mix up the lectures with movies (all of the movies we watched were very informative and enjoyable, I could have appreciated more of them!) or interactive lectures (i.e. the lecture about STDs), or more iClicker sessions.
forum assignments and test questions are confusing. Especially test, phrase them better, they're phrased very confusingly
speak more clearly, and create an easier corse website, such as move to laulima like every other class in school.
Perhaps less topics because it could be difficult for people to study some many things at once.
-- snipped --
sure
She became a little more organized and easier to understand.
Get text book. The course website and her way of assigning homework was a little bit confusing.
She did a great job at handling such a large class, I can not think of a better way of presenting information than she did.
This seemed more like a non-introductory course. A little bit easier would be best for this 101 class.
Keep the information on the slides short and sweet. It will make it easier to take notes and learn the important concepts, and it will also help students to pay attention because they won't be overwhelmed with information at one time.
Make assignment instruction more clear. Improve test questioning.
-- snipped --
Better the homework and forum structure
Not having soo much on the class slides, don't move to fast, point out important things to know.
Perhaps go a little slower through the powerpoints, as students are trying to write and listen at the same time. The power points themselves can be a little more clear, as when I open them to study I am often confused as the powerpoints only contain fragmented information.
The tests seemed to be the only thing that was unstable. Like the length and amount of time would have great disparity test to test. Also the technology took a little while to get used to, but I think that's on the students part to stop refusing it and accept that this is a highly tech involved class. And when there were glitches or mishaps, she was very understanding and fair.
By taking things more slower, and not making all the homework and submissions so complicated
-- snipped --
Space out your iClicker questions. Not all at the beginning and dont always have one at the end of class. Have one in 15 minute intervals or something random because I notice some students come at the end of class just to do that one question for attendence.
-- snipped --
She needs to be more clear on material and go at a slower pace for the students to follow along. Also, she should spend more time on some topics rather than flying through them.
nothing, she is a great teacher.
She needs to slow down a bit when discussing difficult concepts.
make in class exercises
More strict towards disruptive students
-- snipped --
She can improve the teaching of this course by posting the due date as the last date the assignment can be turned in, instead of the next date.
make the class more interesting
n/a
If it's possible to shorten the slides and make the class more exciting.
Explain the topic more in depth
I think she should make her powerpoints with more details on each topics, so students will be able to understand them easily.
-- snipped --
Be a little louder in class. Go over more of the vital points in your slides.
-- snipped --
She could try to go slower and not present so much information in just one lecture.
Improvise with her lectures. Most times she reads off of her slides. If she were to memorize the subject and be more fluid then the lectures would be easier to understand and follow along.
She needs to improve on the way she communicates to the class and on making lectures a bit more exciting.
Sometimes she goes too fast on the power points and it's hard to get all of the notes.
I think there was an original mix up in the class size so it did seem like the full lecture was a bit to handle for her at the beginning. However, throughout the course she got more comfortable. If she does teach a large lecture style course again, more interactive things may be helpful in keeping the students alert.
I think the forum submissions should be changed to be due after the lecture and not before, because it's hard to know what is expected for each submission if you don't understand the topic and the relations to biology. It also doesn't help that you're being graded on how accurate/how related they are to each other.
N/A
-- snipped --
Maybe more connections between bio terms and life events Pointing out students who are disrupting class, or kick them out
Maybe go a little slower.. not do everything online.
I dunno
She should slow down a lot more. It is difficult to take notes in the class, but it is helpful the slides are on laulima.
Go slower.
Check the mic, walking around is good, and be understanding it's intimidating to speak in a lecture hall setting and usually not expected of students.
-- snipped --
If she didn't go through chapters and concepts to fast.
More videos.
Nothing
should have some hands on examples if possible to engage the class
Test questions need to be worded better Tests should be done in class rather than with our time outside of class Tests should be shorter I think the class should be taught entirely online or entirely in the classroom It was pretty pointless to go to class because all the information was online- the only reason I went was for attendance points

The lectures are posted before our class time which prepared us on what we are expected to go over in class. The iClicker questions is a handy way of checking on attendance and involving the class, especially since it is a lecture class. We all will learn why that is the answer to the question by the small discussion after each question which was really helpful to me.
I liked learning about different things, even though I did it more on my own.
Exam formats, homework, and iClicker questions.
I liked that the homework wasn't hard and that the exams were online.
Power points give a great visual and make things clear. Videos were nice.
I enjoyed the interactive homework assignments. Assignments that are relevant and interactive are always a plus in any class. Online homework submissions and tests made it easier to consistently do work. I admired her commitment to take student feedback seriously.
Examples

I like that the tests were online so I could do them on my time.
10 HW's
I liked that the notes were easily available online
Online test were very easy because we could do it on our time during the weekend. You still need to study hard and know the concepts to get a good grade but it is helpful that you can do it at home. I liked that everything was online too.
O think the online feature, but then the whole class should've just been online.
Sole.of the homeworks actually.
I liked that the tests were online, so that we could take it on our own time.
The online aspect of the course. The class web page was well organized and easy to navigate.
The aspect of the course that I liked the best was that everything was online. I also like that the iclickers were used. I wished that we would have gotten extra credit points or graded if we got the answers right.
I liked that most of the tests were online, and the homework was online. That made things a lot easier for me.
iClicker.

the videos were very interesting and fun to see
I enjoyed the iClicker because it engaged the students. Also, I enjoyed the case studies because they made the material more realistic. It's much easier to listen and learn when the same situation could happen to us. I liked the in-class activities, even though our class was so large. It was fun to interact with my classmates.
The interactive aspect of the I-clickers was good for the class, and also the topics on sustainability were something new and refreshing.
Loved the videos. Loved the homework, very reasonable.
I like learning about GMO
Covering sustainability.
I liked being able to answer questions in class with iClicker and get immediate feedback.

online tests, large participation grade, no weighted grades
Everything was made clear. Helpful calender with all the duedates for assignments.
the videos, even if it did make me feel like humanity has failed in more ways than one.
I liked the iclicker questions
All or most of the work was online. So I was able to do the work ahead of time if necessary or I could get help from outside sources if needed.
All info are in the slides.
Learning how I can create a more sustainable society, and help promote others to do so as well.
I like the interactive assignments, especially the crossword puzzle. It helped to really test whether I had learned the material as well I thought I did, and it was a fun way to review the lecture points.
-ecosystems -genetic diseases
I love how the tests were online!
Learning about DNAs and Genetics
I loved watching in-class movies - I am inclined to learn visually, so the videos were quite helpful in reinforcing the material. Homework was fun, easy, and not too burdensome; forum posts were a little daunting at first, but after researching and writing it increased my understanding of the issues.
I love how she incorporated several mediums of media. She used video, power point, iclicker, even mini group experiments. Class was different and I was not just being lectured at. She was talking to the students, not at them.
I like that i can apply things from what I learned to my everyday lifestyle
Online tests and homeworks, iclicker questions in class
The videos were very informative.
She was sometimes interesting and had some sense of humor. Its good that she focuses on how everything impacts hawaii so we know that it'd immediately affect us.
I like hearing other people come to class and speak about what they are most knowledgeable about. It is more interesting and learning more from hearing from someone who actually works with the subject talked about then someone who just hears about the subject and have never really experience.
The online exams we're a nice change of pace.
Learning about sustainability in every class lecture.
I enjoyed the sustainability lessons because these are lessons that we can implement into our daily lives.
I liked learning about different aspects of biology. Although i did not find it that interesting, but I enjoyed learning about all these different topics.
the homework assignments

How lenient the grading was.
I liked the online exams and extra credit opportunities.

Throughout the class, I liked learning about how the subject related to Hawaii because it made it more personal.
The online exams

I like her powerpoint about hawaii's nature.
I enjoyed learning about photosynthesis, and how to helpencourage a sustainable community. I also enjoyed learning about the effect of plastics on marine life.

Take home tests were helpful.
I liked the homework assignments because they were useful in comprehending the materials taught in class and some of the assignments were fun to do.
The aspects of this course that i liked best was that she made things very clear and she knew her material very well.
I thought it was interesting to use Google as the main form of assignments and tests. For me it was nice because it worked around my busy schedule with school and work. She also covered a wide variety of topics in the course, finding relevant topics to us as college students and new members of progressing society.
I liked the whole forum submission and the online testing concepts.

Guest speaker Shannah Trevenna.
I liked the online assignments and readings and print outs. The stories were interesting like the girl whos cells had too much water. Or the rat online assignment The homework was easy and helpful

My favorite aspect of the course was the focus on Sustainability.
iClicker.
I like the sustainability parts and the class activities parts.
I liked how the course let you submit personalized homework assignments that were different from other classmates so you had to find the right answer and write about it instead of everyone in the class trying to find the same answers.
I liked the aspect of sustainability and how it effects us.
Videos
The broad range of topics covered, that didn't necessarily pertain to biology, but is good for us to know (sustainability).
online tests were very convenient
I enjoyed how she us our impact on the environment and hawaii's environment
I thought the movies were well chosen and highly educational I liked that the lectures were available online everything we learned was of value

Noise is consistently a problem in her lectures. If she had an assistant to help silence the class, I think the level of discourse in the class would improve greatly.

To do well, you must go to class. That is important for any student in her class.

I am glad to be your student this semester. I enjoy every minute of it. Thank You so much and Good luck with your teaching career.
if i wanted to have an online course i would have signed up for one. this was supposed to be a lecture hall and i missed assignments because of things being online. i do not sign up for online couses because i do not do well at them.
As far the very scientific side of the course, the jargon was difficult at times and I strongly feel that a textbook would have provided us with foundational information that our professor does not have the time to go over in class.
Great teacher, great class, i would recommend her.
Good course for the basics of Bio.

she made it easy to get good grades as long as you completed all of the work, and it was rigorous at some times, but most of the time it was nice.
None.
SLOW DOWN THE LECTURES!!!!! And, knowing that students will leave en mass a few minutes before the end of class, try to time lectures to fit that. Also, try to cram less stuff in each lecture so that maybe the pacing will be better and less rushed.
It was just really hard to focus and pay attention because the material was dry.
Her accent was very thick. I have lived in Hawaii for all my life and never encountered someone with this type of accent and it was very hard for me to understand the course work throughout the semester. She seems nice but need to work on her social skills, so the students dont feel intimdated to ask questions.
thank you
She was a really good professor.
I was a bit skeptical on how biology could relate to sustainability, but was surprised to see how much I have learned from linking the two. The environment emphasis was a little excessive, but I think more people need to realize how important the land and sea really are. Taking care of the land is really another way of taking care of our children, as they will be the ones "inheriting" the land and whatever is left of it after we are "done." Proverbs 12:10 says, "The righteous man regards the life of his animal;" it is therefore the moral man's duty to care for the earth as it has been entrusted to us.
This class really needs a textbook. I know Dr. Serghi can't particularly do anything about ordering a textbook for the class, but it's ridiculous to try to teach bio without a textbook. It makes the required study and memorization exceedingly more difficult.

Sometimes it is hard to understand with your strong accent. I am not saying it's really bad but try work on pronouncing certain words better.

I thoroughly enjoyed this class. I'm not a science person so being able to keep up and understand the material in this course was a personal success for me. I would highly recommend this course for people who usually do not grasp science so easily like me because she breaks it down in ways we can understand and retain.

Too much online. Make it like a school class not an online coarse.
I appreciate the effort put into the class by the teacher and I hope she keeps that enthusiasm. The large classroom setting makes it difficult to speak in and we do not have microphones ourselves. Initially it was sometimes difficult to understand her because of my unfamiliarity with her accent but over time it became easier. I wish her a happy vacation and best of luck in her endeavors.

8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
The old journal articles for the first presentation. It was nice to read the articles that made history and changed science.
The most valuable part of the course was reading scientific papers and presenting the information. I have only taken one other course that taught students about reading and understanding journals/papers. Not only did this teach me to think critically about molecular techniques used, but it also taught me how to analyze and understand complex papers and apply it to the "theory" we learn in class. Presenting the papers helped me to learn how to present "scientific" information to my peers (which is what anyone who goes into research will need to do). It was sort of like having journal club built into the normal course...very helpful for understanding the "real" science.
Dr. Serghi is a dedicated educator. She was always easy to approach, helpful and patient when explaining. The course itself, was well planed.
Although I didn't enjoy it at the time (too busy :) )i thought the class presentations were very useful. it is a good way to practice giving presentations on complicated subjects and thinking critically, but i think there needs to be a way to encourage class participation during presentations. A lab component would be nice as well.
Analyze the data questions and online exams. I also liked the integration of novel experiments that led to Nobel prizes.
The paper presentations required outside work and helped us understand big picture and real life examples
It was like a refresher for the lower level molecular biology class but this time we had to use what we know and apply them in problem solving.
I enjoyed the small class size and discussion of materials. The regular homework questions related to the reading help me keep up with the class (although i would have liked them to be open a week in advance rather than the morning of in some cases). Reading historically famous papers in the field was very helpful, although reading less important and (in my opinion) less well written papers later in the semester was more challenging (although useful to see the difference between a Nobel prize paper and common publications). Open book take home tests were very nice and I feel they helped me learn just as much as the class. If there were important details that I missed or didn't pay attention too in class, I was able to learn them during the test. The tests felt like a test of skill necessary in the field rather than a test of your ability to memorize facts. They measured your ability to quickly research and synthesize information which I felt helped me more than most other classes I've had up until now. The presentation of papers was also a helpful experience, as I have had limited experience up until now reading and analyzing papers during my undergrad education.
I liked that we presented significant scientific articles. The online homework helped keep me in track of what material I should know at each class.
One thing that I found to be particularly valuable was the opportunity to present research papers (current and historical) to the class via a power point presentation. This is the first time that I had the opportunity to analyze and present a research paper. I found this exercise highly enlightening and educational. I would highly encourage that this exercise be continued in this course and expanded to other courses.
I found the presentations to be the most valuable and helpful aspects about the course because it allowed the students to critically analyze scientific literature, both historical and modern. Further, the presentations allowed the students to communicate their understanding of the reading. In addition, I found the Analyze the Data questions to be valuable since it allowed students to apply the reading.

20. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I would recommend that the students choose the second journal article, so that we can choose an article that we enjoy learning about. But the journal article should be relevant to course material. For example, if I could choose, I would have presented an article about effects of antibiotics on mitochondria.
The teaching of the course was fine. The content can be a bit difficult at times, but Dr. Serghi did a good job at making the difficult concepts easier to understand. For next time, I think it would be nice if the homework questions, especially the analyze the data parts, were discussed at least weekly so we know that we are on track with the questions (since similar ones show up on the exam). We started doing this after the first exam, and it was very helpful.
A lab would help.
I think it would be beneficial to add information from outside the book, especially personal experience with research. It was really helpful when you brought in slides from your Ph.D. I think it would be great to integrate more of that into the course. Also, a lab would be really helpful.
keep up with the grading - more instruction on the presentation of the papers.
more pictures on lecture slides and more emphasis on Analyze the Data problems
Although a lot of work in molecular biology is recent, our ability to synthesize ideas and understand the information in newer publications depends on our knowledge of past experiments and research. I feel greater focus on historically famous experiments would be more helpful to our understanding of the subject. If there is ever a chance to offer a course that simply involves reading and discussing the significance of Nobel papers (call it History 450 or Bio 480 or something, analysis of Nobel literature. theses courses would be very helpful in every subject from chemistry to physics to biology, to history and art. The television was invented by a farmer watching light refract in morning dew on a field!! Nobel laureates are 10 times more likely to participate in the arts.) In short I really enjoyed the Nobel papers and would like to see the importance of more of them discussed in class. say Monday and Wednesday we learn the concepts necessary to understand the paper discussed on Friday. Each week has a new focus, primarily on the necessary background information and techniques. What why and how.
Scientific papers were very difficult to go through. I would have like to have known what background knowledge I should consider when reading through them. I enjoyed learning about them though.
First, I commend Dr. Serghi's efforts at teaching this semester. However, I felt that in the beginning, she seemed exasperated at answering students' questions, when no one would answer her, or when students did not understand her. However, I felt that this was virtually eliminated by the end of the semester, and she no longer seemed exasperated. In fact, I felt that she enjoyed student discussions.

25. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Analyze the Data problems were the best! (: Loved them!
For me, the best aspects of the course were that the homework and exams were available online. I liked that the exams were available online and that I had a choice on which day I could take it. Like most college students today, I work off campus and have family responsibilities. Having the flexibility to do and. submit my homework online anytime before the due date really helped me plan ahead and stay on track. Having the exams online also gave me flexibility, and it was less stressful because I got to choose a time when I was at my peak so I did better than I may have on a written test. I also like that the lectures were made available before (and occasionally after) class. I could preview the lecture and ask questions in class if I did not understand something.
The course was challenging but not intimidating.
i liked having different types of assignments. Not just 2 exams and 1 final and thats it. The variety was good.
I thought the presentations were very helpful, although I think the students could have been a little more stimulating in the way they presented them (including myself).
The Analyze the data was a chance to think more big picture
All
The presentation of papers, discussion of data form previous papers (analyze the data) and the open book tests all encouraged learning more than grading. This is one of the few classes I've taken so far that I feel really worked to help me understand the subject rather than graded my ability to teach myself.
I liked how we examined famous scientific articles. It helped me understand how they were able to come up with the scientific concepts that help shape the theories that we have today.
I really appreciated the method of and time allotted for the taking of examinations. The format of the exams really mitigated the majority of the stress and pressure felt during typical exams and allowed me to clearly focus on and determine the appropriate answer(s). Domnica-Daita Serghi focus on encouraging her studentâ??s ability to analyze and interpret data was of profound significance. It helped me to understand the material presented in the text and throughout the course in a broader and more comprehensible manner. In comparison to other more traditional science courses where all you do is memorize facts and figures long enough to pass the exam/class (which are then quickly forgotten), Serghiâ??s approach was, without a question, a more comprehensive and thought provoking style of instruction.
I liked the student presentations and the Analyze the Data questions the best.
26. What changes would you make in the lectures?
More advanced topics?
Nothing, lectures were good.
make them available before the lecture, i always found that helped.
Less textbook focused and more examples of experiments that influenced molecular and cell biology.
Less lecture style and involve the class more. - maybe add iclickers or a lab
I would have fewer presentations, with more focus on the significance of the research and potentials for further research. It would be helpful for the class to cover the necessary background information leading up to each presentation, and then analyses the data from the presentation as a class. Identify important methods in the paper and other cases in which they can be used. I feel that a more detailed investigation into the basics of the subject would be more helpful than a good overview of the more complicated aspects. The reading from the books was very helpful, but I feel by the end of the class we were reading papers that we (or maybe just I) didn't really understand anymore.
I had a really difficult time with the analyze the data problems. I did not really know how to approach the data in the first place. Maybe a guideline on how to do it?.
I would make the PowerPoint lectures more concise. A few times, I felt that the presentations were difficult to pay attention to. Perhaps, I was not interested in the content of those presentations? Also, I believe that reading the scientific literature should be made mandatory to increase class discussions, which was usually not the case during the second round of presentations.
27. What changes would you make in the writing assignments?
Let us choose the second journal article instead of assigning it.
No changes.
Some of the scientific paper presentations were hard to follow at times. In some cases presenters moved on to talk about experimental methods before the class could get a good grasp of the hypothesis. Also, if I had to do such presentation again, perhaps I would make use of the bord to illustrate what was is being said, or print out hand-outs with some of the main points of the discusion.
The summary paper was really good, it might be useful to make students write a summary paper for both presentations.
It was stressful being that the writing assignment was worth 20% of the grade.
more instructions and feedback once before the final draft is due
I would make the daily homework available for submission earlier. By the end of the semester I was crunched for time with other classes and was unable to always find time the night before to do the questions. Also I would make analysis of the data of each paper a weekly or bi weekly assignment and do away with the final paper.
I liked the writing assignments.
I don't necessarily believe that the homework (not the Analyze the Data) helped much, as most of the time, it was regurgitating the content in the textbook. I felt that the homework assignments, other than the Analyze the Data, were merely busy work.

29. Other comments:
Thank you, Dr. Serghi!
Overall, this class was great. The best part about it was the online portion for homework and exams. All I had to focus on was coming to class and understanding the lecture since online homework submission gave me the freedom to get it done before the due date. Dr. Serghi is very personable, smart, and compassionate. She does not dismiss student's questions, but challenges us to first think critically about it and then gives us answers if we still cannot come up with them. Also, she brings in information from outside of the book, which broadens our understanding of the various topics.
this might sound crazy, but my only real criticism is please don't wave the pointer all around when you want to talk about 1 thing on the screen. its confusing / makes me dizzy. maybe just keep it on what you want to talk about (in one place )and if thats too long, turn it off for a minute.
Daita is a great professor and should definitely be able to teach this course again. - i would personally only take it again if she was the teacher
It was a very enjoyable class. Best of luck to you and your growing family. I look forward to seeing you again next semester.
I think it would be very beneficial if the class was more interactive. We have such a small class and that would be really beneficial if we were able to exchange ideas with each other. It would help inspire new ideas and critical thinking.

9. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
The knowledge about how GMO and our our food.
Just a broader perspective on Biology.
Through Domnica-Daita Serghi's enthusiastic instruction, I further understood the mysteries of biology.
she gave me better understanding in topics like sustainability, ecosystems, gm foods.
Being more careful about the things that I buy, because it could directly affect the environment.
Learned more about stem cell research and genetically modified foods.
I have new information on the current problems and technologies facing our world that will allow me to make better decisions. It has also given me a base knowledge that will help me to understand new problems as they arise, and a better understanding of basc biology that will help me in the future. This course also gave me a better understanding of the world as a whole that is necessary to living in it without using it up. This course provided me with materials that will help in the future and the skills to find more and to work around biases. This course was very helpful and the effects of this course will radiate into the future decisions and understanding of biology.
This course served as a good refresher of biology. It has been 12 years since my last biology class. This course was very well presented and organized in a way that made it easier to remember.
I think that overall, her personality and love of the subject is obvious. However, trying to teach her students the same love that she has, was difficult for her. She didn't present information as inspiring as she had viewed it. I do however think that is a teaching ability that can be improved.
the broad range of topics helped me to be better informed about certain issues.
The only thing that wil benefit me, is that it will refreshen what I already know about biology because I have a lot of prior knowledge of the subject.
I can't think of anything specific.
broader understanding of biology and society and how they are effected by each other.

more understanding.
knowledge of scientific skills and processes
Better understanding of the green movement.
not much. I knew many of the topics from high school biology.
I learned how biology affects us as a society, which also applies to my major and thesis, as I look at the interaction between science and society.
This course allowed me to learn Biology more in-depth. It also helped me to be more aware about some environmental and social problems that are occurring now.
having completed bio 171 and currently taking 172 I was able to see how 101 would have sufficiently prepared me for those classes
I personally did not get much from the course, however I did get my mind refreshed with basic biology.
It helps me understand what danger our native plants and animals are in. It motivates me to conserve our extinct species and probably save the resources that we need.
I learned that things are a lot worst than I though, and that I will try harder at helping out the environment and our society.
NO, I don't more then this course of biology for my major. this was just a requirement
A lot of very useful information relating to biology
I liked the genetics unit and the unit on blood. Those were the units that were the most useful and got me thinking and asking questions about my own genetic history which was quite useful. Thank you!

21. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
You should provide handouts of the lecture and go over it with the class while doing powerpoint. Don't make the powerpoint so long. And the tests are ridiculous!!! Why have them so long?? The material is hard enough already and you make the tests too broad and difficult for just a bio 101 class. Don't think so deeply. And provide study guides, because trust me, your students need all the help they can get.
I think she doesn't need any improvement in her teaching. She is doing perfectly well as an instructor.
I believe that Domnica-Daita Serghi did an exquisite job in teaching the class everything she had to teach for the course. I do not think that she needs any improvements in teaching the course.
more interesting ways to keep students involved. clicker was used only for attendance after a few weeks.
Incorporate more class activities and stronger supplements of homework.
I personally felt a couple of the topics went a little too in depth for a 101 course that is required for science majors.
She did a great job teaching this course. Because this was a large, basic intro class, it is hard to interact with the material until the end of larger units. If there is a chance for more interaction or discussion it would be more engaging but this is a hard class to do this with if it is still as large as it is. Also, a project may be nice, to expand and apply the information as well as enabling us to meet other students in the class. But given the size and level of this class, she did an amazing job.
The only suggestion that I have would be more class participation. This is hard to achieve especially in the 100 level, but I think more questions directed to individuals rather than the class would benefit everyone.
I think that narrowing down the subject matter to fit the available time for the class was difficult for her to do. Class plans and objectives, I think, need to be re-evaluated and lessened to become more effective and time efficient.
I just wish that she would not read directly off of the power points, we see it and can read it for ourselves. I wish she would elaborate and espand on each points rather than reading them off the power point.
I liked pretty much everything about it. It was just hard for her to get all of her discussions done as well as she wanted to because most of the class did not want to participate.

less homework.
more hands on tasks
Less online quizzes
I didn't feel like the course required a lot of effort so I didn't put a lot of effort in.
No suggestions.
I feel that the lectures went a little to fast for learning in class. It was a good thing the powerpoints were available online though.
even though the videos were a nice touch to the lass I feel there were too much, maybe if 1-2 videos were omitted that would make the class a bit better
i don't see much to be improved.
She can make the final exam online and open notes.
She could plan out how much time she spends on certain slides so that she doesn't have to miss some slides.
More clear test questions
Maybe serve ice cold beverages and baked goods every class would be nice
She does not need to offer so much extra credit to students. It gives them the opportunity to not do the homework if they can do the extra credit which does not stimulate learning.

27. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The learning of GMO.
Personally, I appreciated the videos the best, given that I am a visual learner. However, the lectures were not boring, and the course material was always interesting.
Teacher was well organized and prepared.
Carbon footprint, anything about animal communities and how they affect one another in a population
genetics and biofood
I liked the fact that the things we were learning were applicable or related to the worold we live in today. It was applied to life now and relevent to reality. It was clear and concise with detail but not so much so as to confuse. The teacher did an amazing job and the class made sense and was fun. The things we learned are important for the world we live in, not random biology that no one cares about. The lessons we can take out of the lectures can be applied to us, not just some idea that will never be used again.
I enjoyed the assignments. All of the homeworks were interesting and sometimes fun. But more importantly they really put into perspective the concepts learned for the lecture(s).
Lecture notes, and in-class assignment I think worked best (i.e iclicker and group assignments
To be honest, I'm kind of neutral. It wasn't entirely terrible nor was it excellent; right in the middle.
I liked that the midterms were online and the fact that we were given ample time to finish.
I liked that our exams were quizzes where we could use our notes, and do on our own time, i also liked how she had us interact in the lectures by answering multiple questions with our iclickers

power points.
simple and straightforward
Using the I-Clicker
It was an easy filler course that met requirements and didn't require a lot of time
The interplay between science and its actual effects on people and communities.
I like how the professor tried to make the topics relate back to the students. That way, it showed us that we are all affected by all world matters.
i liked the use of the iclickers as attendance.
I loved that we do quizzes online and it is open notes. It really helped me to get a good grade in the class.I also liked using the iClicker. (: Putting the powerpoints online was very helpful as well.
I liked that we got to review the slide shows after lectures so that we could review the course material.
I liked the Iclicker its so nasty
I liked the iclicker because it got us more involved and I feel that we should have used it more often in classes so that it was more than an attendance tool.

Don't spend so much time on powerpoints. And not everyone is knowlegable about biology, that is why we are taking the class. Explain clearer, and don't shut down students when they try to answer. That is the reason why no one answers.
My sincere thanks goes out to Domnica-Daita Serghi for her admirable efforts to give me a better understanding of Biology.
Is pretty much what should be expected for a 101 class.
I was very impressed with Dr. Serghi. She is a wonderful and professional instructor. She is very knowledgeable, and the one time I remember that she didn't know the answer to a question that was asked; she shot out an email to everyone that afternoon with the answer. That shows a level of dedication that this school needs more of. She is a fine assest to the University. And get the poor woman some parking on campus so she doesn't need to run from the structure everyday!
I think Overall the Professor was averagely good, and has potential to be great. Her friendly attitude, and respect towards her students are among her best qualities. She often gives extra credit oppurtunities, and help needed outside of class. I think possible solutions she can consider to improve her teaching abilities are creating better lectures that are limited to time contraints, creating a learning objective outline in the begining of ch slides for student to understand what is going on before divining into the lecture, and creating better examples that can get her students involved in the lecture.

4. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
The pertinence of the material taught and how relevant it is with all that's going on in the world.
Learning about how we are poisoning the Earth, and how we as a community can help change that.
Online assignments, hands on field trips, in class debate
I have learned a lot, and I learned a lot of things about our enviornment that never thought to cross my mind before. I look at life a whole lot differetly ow.
i really enjoyed the service learning projects. they were very fun and imformative. made me feel good about giving back to the enviroment!
The Saturday morning trips to help the environment.
made me more aware of the environment around me
The awareness towards environmental problems. They're real life problems that directly effect everyone.
Learning Service
There is a variety of topics covered. The course is multi-dimensional.
The material is presented in such a way that it is very easy to understand, and leaves very few questions about it.
The course was not as in depth as I expected it to be but it was informative nonetheless. I actually learned something, and that's valuable in itself.
The issues that were previously unknown to me are now things that i have a lot of interest in.
I found the Field trip was more valuable because we got to help save endangered plants.
5. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
The sheer volume of material taught. I think it's too much. It would be better to have less material and more time to cover the topics for a more thorough understanding.
The text book was pretty expensive and we rarely used it.
Group projects, many did not participate or even come to class
there wasn't anything that was not valuable, but the most valuable i'd have to say would be learning about the way our environment works.
too long powerpoints
I disagree with some of the material in the class, because I feel some of the material isn't accurate.
nothing
I consider everything I learned in this class to be valuable information.
Group presentation
If the debate was organized better I feel it would be more helpful. The points were all valuable, but it was altogether chaotic. Not the instructor's fault.
The group projects worked against me as I keep very busy with school and work. The good thing about that, was that there was only one major project so far.
The lectures were every single day and I prefer a class with a bit of teaching variety. The slides were informative but they were more of a crutch. It's just a harder way for me to learn.
The long lectures.

I'm not sure.
she's already great !
remind daily about online assignments
Have a couple more Staurday trips.
she did a really good job
simple lecture
Continue in the manner that she currently teaches.
All of the material was presented very clearly, and the book felt a bit useless. Maybe by announcing that the book wouldn't be necessary would save the students a bit of money.
She's a wonderful teacher, but she's too smart to teach ecology. That was obvious from day 1.
By having more hands on projects.

I though reading the papers was useful and presented a more 'real world' way of seeing Molecular Biology in action.
The powerpoints were really helpful... Having diagrams that weren't in the book was nice.
The instructor is very knowledgeable about the field of molecular biology.
The small class size was the most helpful. I had an easier time learning because of this. I loved the in class discussions that we used to have.

20. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Could go more in depth on some of the topics.
Maybe at times be alittle more organized. Although I know it was hard since she was assigned to teach this course 2 weeks before the course started.

25. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Reading the papers, and having my peers present them.
The lectures
The best parts were when the lecture was related to current technologies (for example, the Glowing Zebrafish). The student presentations were interesting also.
I liked the oral presentations in this course.
26. What changes would you make in the lectures?
Nothing, I like the discussion style setting.
A few more animations to get key points across.
27. What changes would you make in the writing assignments?
I thought the writing assignment was a useful exercise, and very reasonable. I don't think any changes need to made to it.
They were challenging, but I guess thats good, so I wouldn't change them.
None

29. Other comments:
Overall, I enjoyed this course, and I definately learned a lot about a subject I would not otherwise have known. I think for being the first time this course was taught by this instructor it went exceptionally well and I felt challenged without it being too hard. That being said, I did think the level of work required to do well in the course was a little heavier than I would have anticipated for a 400-level lecture based course. However, though it was a lot of work, I didn't feel like any of it was wasted or unnecessary, so I'm not sure what could/should be trimmed.
Dr. Serghi demonstrated a passion for teaching and learning biology. She was very understanding and always willing to help those in need. If she did not know an answer to a question, the next day she would be prepared to answer it. Overall, a very good teacher but a little disorganized at times. However, if able to continue teaching I would defintely take one of her classes again.
