17. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He made sure we emailed him if we had any questions and to let him know if we were going o miss class of not. He also provided labs for us to study and further our knowledge on the given topic.
He made sure that we studied on our own time. He gave us review sheets.
He always said he would stay after school and can always email
Remind them of things that are due.
He didn't
He showed concern for the students by posting up notes the he showed us up on laulima. Then when it come to drawing complicated structures he printed them out and handed them out.
He cared about how hard we tried during class time but if anyone was to ask him for help he would act sort of careless.
He shows concern by always asking if anyone needs help or understands.
By actually having a syllabus with organized criteria for the course, as well as having the notes available on laulima, and clearly stating days he's available if we needed help.
Sending emails to inform us about homework, tests, quizzes etc.
18. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I liked that we had labs to participate in, but I didn't like how he tested us or prepared for us to be tested. Study guides had no questions which we had no idea what we were studying.
I personally wouldve liked homework for each lecture we had. I feel like I learn better that way. The mid term was hard because I didn't know the answers on the study guides.
I disliked that I never fully understood
He was very complex and advantaced for a low level chemistry. Also if we didn't understand or get it we were expected to look at the notes and figure it out which we all tried and still were confused. Week before exams we would ask for help or to go over questions we had for the review and he refused to help or explain so we all were forced to struggle with a very big unknown label over the whole term .
I just really dont like how, what ever he talked about did not make sense, even if I did ask a question, its not like I would be able to understand.
Dr. Rubio has high standards and stresses safety during labs and I liked learning the precautions necessary in my field of work. The course was difficult because the lectures were fast paste and difficult to fully comprehend. I felf that some of the more important points could have been broken down in a simpler form.
I thought his lab was interesting and fun to learn. Although I felt that he didn't cover most of the material and was quite advanced for me.
I don't like how he doesn't put the actual questions with the multiple answers on the practice test but I like that he gives out practice tests.
I liked how the labs weren't boring and the the lab reports weren't at all as elaborate as I'm use to. He made class very easy and straight forward. I didn't exactly like that I got points off my lab for being lab, but thats my fault.
I feel that his teaching was too advanced. I had a hard time in his class even when I tried my best to pay attention. When I needed help I wouldn't ask because I felt uncomfortable. I really enjoyed labs. I feel that he should make the review sheets as homework and go over the sheets in class, so that way we would know if we are studying the correct material
I really disliked that you sent us study guides without questions, just answers. Then in our study hall period, you did not answer any of our questions or tried to help us find the questions to our answers that were in the study guide. It would've made a bigger difference if we got help because the midterm was such a huge part of our grade. That is one of the biggest things that i didn't like because I sat at home studying something that I didn't even know was going to be on the test. When the test finally came, the questions i had thought were on the study guide were the wrong ones on the quiz, which made me fail. I believe a little more effort and help would have made me like this class.
19. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
Other then study guides he was pretty cool, and knew what he was teaching
He had strong passion for the course he was teaching.
He's very passionate in chemistry
He needs to realize this isn't a course for marine biologist and advanced chemist
Overall the class seemed to go by fast, however he needs to go a little slower when it comes to teaching the subject, and a study guide with noo questions does not help at all. If a person does not know the question then what right do the have to even know the answer. There is no answer without a question.
The course helped give me a little more knowledge relevant to my field, which can go a long way.
His class can be too advanced for someone taking the chemistry class for the first time.
He really knows his stuff but sometimes he gets into it too much...

20. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
I would recommend him to anyone he knows what he's doing.
Yes, because he has passion for Chemistry.
Yes to anyone going into chemistry because that's where his passion is
Yes.
No he's not much help and very hard
Not exactly since his pace is a little hard to keep up with.
Yes, for someone who's advanced and wants to major in in chemistry.
Yes because he is organized and has the whole curriculum well planned out that the students should know that they can pass the class easily.
Yes, because the course was relatively easy, as long as you do the work, show up, and study (which isn't much at all) you're good. However, I wouldn't recommend it to students that choose not to go to class and don't study the material as much as they should, if you want consistent testing and homework to keep your grade afloat if you struggle more in chemistry they should probably find another chemistry professor.

16. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He showed multiple examples of each concept taught.
He encourages students to see him during office hours as soon as possible if material is unclear.
Makes sure that his students are able to understand and if they have any trouble with a certain thing, he is available to help.
Provides extra credit to those who need/wants it. In addition, gave a second chance with one of our quizzes.
Dr. Rubio encourages students to use as much resources as possible because he wants us to succeed in his class. Lectures are really complex at times, but he manages to explain it clearly throughout each lesson.
Brent Rubio shows concern by always giving extra credit and curving our grades because he does not want us to do bad. He also always has answered my questions and it has helped towards an exam or understanding a concept.
He tells his student to go to him during office hours for help, especially when there's exams.
He helps student that don't know how to do something, but will not tell you the answer. He allows you to figure out the answers yourself.
He allowed make up exams for those who were unable to attend due to extenuating circumstances
He announces his office hours and availability every time for students that need help.
17. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
His notes were posted online. He used real world examples to help explain concepts. You could feel his enthusiasm for Chemistry in his lectures and labs.
I like how he breaks down each chapter with his notes. He picks out the main ideas and teaches us ab easier way to learn them.
he keep the subjects interesting by including interesting facts about the subject
He's teaching style, very fun environment.
I really liked his way of teaching compared to other teachers. He taught in a well-mannered kind of teaching. The lessons learned was clear in a way, but you just had to study really hard for the tests & quizzes.
What I really like about Dr. Rubio is that he is really passionate about chemistry and it just makes it more interesting. He also sometimes shows visuals and that is really helpful in understanding some of the material. I really love that he is well organized. I could always go back to my notes and I always understand it. What I don't like is that the study guide for the exam did not really help me because I could not figure out any of the questions. I had to study the book mostly. Also, the quizzes are unexpected and most of the time I was not really prepared for them.
His enthusiasm for the class. He loves teaching chemistry.
Dr. Rubio makes the class very fun, he makes Chemistry a fun subject and easy to understand.
I did not like that no class time was spent going over homework problems and really making sure that the majority of the class knew what they were doing.
He was able to relate the content to real life situations and personal experiences.
18. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
He is a really nice teacher, and grades fairly.
keeps class interesting by doing experiments and talking with students.
He's a great teacher.

21. Other comments:
Brent Rubio uses techniques that makes sure his students are current with his class; homework that you don't need to turn in but that is essential to achieving success, occassional extra credit opportunities for those who attend class.
more experiments would be fun.
I think I've covered everything from the previous comments.

16. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Rubio allowed students to come in during office hours for any questions concerning the lectures and criteria of the class.
He was always stating his office ours, so that students would know when and where to get help.
Encouraging us to ask questions for help
He would often ask questions to see what kind of responses he would get. He encourages office hours every class. He posts grades online so we know where we are at and he is always open to answering questions.
Offers his office time for help if we need it.
Open office hours if you needed him
Doctor Rubio was always readily available for students outside of class. If a student needed help, he would help them and make sure they understood the concept they did not understand.
After a quiz he would tell the class that he's always available in his office if they needed assistance. He also would explain concepts again in another way so that it could be understood by those who didn't quite get it the first time.
He cars about the student, it's the student's job however to care as well
Dr. Rubio encouraged students to form study groups and ask questions during his office hours. Rubio also gave the students study sessions in place of lecture days before an exam.
He always had very flexible office hours and even met off campus if needed.
He post our grades right away so we know where we stand in his class and he always reminds his students that he is there to help us.
He posts our scores from tests and quizzes immediately so that we can see how well we did. He posts the top 5 so that we have somebody to study with and we work as a team kind of thing.
Dr. Rubio is very helpful, by going over problems he makes sure the problems are step by step laid out and works out every step so it is clear.
By answering all questions
He encourages students to create study groups. If anyone is having any trouble, he encourages them to email him, too. He is willing to help students any time.
when we had quizzes he made it known that if you weren't doing good to go to his office hours so he could help you. He also was always willing to help out when you had a question.
He would ask if everybody knew what he just explained and that if we need extra help to come during office hours or after class
17. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
It was very helpful having the notes from the lecture posted on laulima
I really liked the pace in which he taught the lectures and how clear everything was to understand.
I like all the hands on experiments he would run in the course to help us have a better understanding of the material
I liked how professor Rubio explained very complex ideas in this course. For instance, he breaks down the concept into smaller ideas and gives examples. Afterwards, he finally ties everything together really clearly. In addition, Professor Rubio uses great analogies to explain certain ideas
He made class fun and explained his powerpoints slowly until students understood it
I liked the way that he conducted the lecture. Writing on his tablet and having it appear on the projector is very helpful and great interaction. The one thing that I absolutely hate about this class is the pop quizzes. Don't get me wrong, it is good to be on your toes and stuff, but the fact that our grade is based solely off of quizzes and exams would give me a high level of test anxiety, or quiz anxiety in this case. I'm not saying to give a homework grade, hahaha. But maybe like designate weeks that the quiz would be during, so that way we have a 50% chance of guessing when the test is. I would be freaking out every class waiting for the quiz, and once he would announce the quiz, my mind would go blank. Never had this issue prior to this class. It kind of affects my test taking skills in other classes as well. Otherwise, it is a good class.
Lots of lecture notes, clear instructions for work, fun class to learn.
I can't see the blue pointer
I liked the way he taught the course with a lot of visuals and examples. It helped understand the concept more than if there was no visuals. I guess the pop quizzes were okay. I mean I think they were intended to make us constantly study and stay on our game with Chem class but me being me, I hardly study for it but still did relatively good on them.
I enjoyed how engaged he was about the subject. That's an effective way of teaching because if the students feel that the teacher wants to teach and not sit around, it motivates them.
Personally, I think the pop quizzes shouldn't be pop quizzes anymore, I think they should be scheduled... Like that was an on going stressor for a lot of students because they never knew when the quiz was...
Dr. Rubio always made difficult concepts easy to understand with great examples or anecdotes.
I liked how detailed it was and the class had a nice pace
Chemistry is like a foreign subject for me and Im sure many others. Ive taken other chemistry courses in which the instructors were to fast paced or would not have the patience to help you understand the subject. But Dr. Rubio is the opposite of that. He helps you understand by giving examples that stick in your head and also shows demonstrations as well. He is very patient when I needed to be told solutions to problems more than once for me to understand. Dr. Rubio is the best chemistry professor I ever had.
I like how he gave us examples and he explains everything like we don't know anything about the course. In that way, it would help him to teach us in a right way that everyone could understand.
His notes are always availabe online.
His notes are easily to follow and organize. He does not go off course and just make the class fun.
I liked how he actually made the subject interesting. It wasn't like pulling teeth with most chemistry classes. He went through examples with us in class till we understood it. Asking us what the answer would be. He made it fun and interesting. Thing I would say i didn't like is just the fact it wasnt like an accelerated course.
I liked how organized the class was and how he always saved the notes onto llama
18. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
Awesome haircut.
Rubio is a good example of a successful person. He motivates the students in a way that encourages us and pushes us to be successful as well.
It was a good experience for me because I never took a chem class in my life and his was very intriguing
En
Great class, not a walk in the park though, Chem is always a hard subject. Best to know your stuff and be a cool test taker because his pop quizzes are pretty scary.
Fun class, encourages studying, it pays off if you put in the work.
Fun
I think that the way Doctor Rubio is teaching the course is amazing! He makes the materials easy to understand, he uses a good amount of visuals, and he explains everything that needs to be taught in detail. He do not just mention something and not elaborate on it, he goes into full blown detail of it.
He's a cool guy. He's very approachable so if I need help I know I can ask him without feeling intimidated or freaked out.
TAKE IT!
nothing
Dr. Rubio's course is the best chemistry class Ive ever taken.
He is a good instructor. If we ask him question, he would answer it easily. He prefers to call him Dr. Rubio and he says "cool" when he's done with one thing to discus. He is really cool.
He is engaged in making sure the material is comfortable for the non native speaker of English to understand.
He is a great teacher and he just made things possible.
Best chem teacher i had so far. Wish you would hold a spot for chem 162 to better help students get the gen chem knowledge In a way they can understand it.
It was an interesting course
19. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Yes, because out of all the chemistry teachers I've had he was able to make the material interesting and comprehensible.
Yes i would recommend Rubio because he treats every student equally and everyone has a good chance to pass his class.
Hell yeah! I already have recommended people to take his course if they need to take chem. Because he is an amazing teacher that's super into his subject.
Yes I would definitely recommend Brent Rubio to other students, particularly when he teaches Chemistry.
Yes because he really cares about his students and is always willing to help
I would recommend Brent because he knows his material, really really well.
I would recommend him, very friendly and easy to talk to.
Yes. Gained a lot more than I had previously
Of course! Because Doctor Rubio know what he is talking about when he teaches the class! He is not just teaching to teach and get his pay check, he is teach to give knowledge to the students who need and want it!
Yes I would definitely recommend him to other students because he's obviously one of the best faculty members at the school. I would take another course from him if I had too.
Definitely!! Best science professor I've had so far, he cares about the students, it's the students job however to care as well. Also has amazing office hours to go to, he's basically free almost all the time, and you can also email him. Also, he is very descriptive and knows his subject well enough!
Yes, I would highly recommend Dr. Rubio to other students because he is obviously passionate about chemistry and will work with you to pass the course.
yes, because he if very easy to understand and communicate with.
I would definitely recommend Dr.Rubio's course due to the fact he is very knowledgable in the subject matter and helps his students in the best way that he can to help us understand it.
I would recommend Dr. Rubio to other students because his class is not that hard because he explains everything.
Yes, probably one of the only Chemistry Instructor who is personable and easy to speak with.
Yes. Very great teacher
I would recommend anyone to take his class. If you don't like science, he won't make you hate it more.
Definitely. I tried chem 161 3 times. I couldn't pass it. I took his class... i understood more of chemistry with him than i did any other teacher i took. He's great. He makes it fun and interesting and makes it challenging for you. Like saying who scores the top 5 highest. You strive to get your name on there.
I would, because it's not a hard class. It's hard if you don't do your part of the work: studying, listening, etc.

Mahalo Nui Loa Professor! This was an awesome experience. Hope to see you in another course soon.
I believe that Professor Rubio should always teach Chemistry. In particular he should teach Chem 100, 161, and 162. His teaching style is unlike any other science teacher I ever had. I believe the students that attended HCC would benefit if Professor teaches chemistry.
I hope he teaches CHEM 162 so I can take him again.
Great class! This was by far my favorite class this semester besides math. Even though I do not like Chem because it is hard for me to understand, Doc taught the course very well that it made me want to learn.
Great Instructor!
none
Best chemistry professor ever! I wish all chemistry professors were more like him.
Teach 161 and 162! You're the best chem teacher out there. Do at least 1 pyramid quiz. Where students are allowed to help each other out in class as long as they dont ask you. My math teacher did so and said grades go up overall. More experiments. It helped understand concepts more. Give students reflections to write about concepts they learned. As part of extra credit.

2. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Always explained upcoming labs.
He'd remind us to wear our goggles if we'd accidentally forget and watch to see that we were doing to lab correctly. His vigilance was reassuring because at least I know that he'd stop me if I was about to screw up.
Always looking out for everyones safety when doing a lab. Sometimes watching us like an eagle, making us nervous.
Dr. Rubio showed concern by continuing to rotate around the lab checking if everyone is conduction their experiments in a safe manner. Rubio also highly stressed the use of safety goggles and lab coats.
Helping others
He made sure we we're safe during the lab and answered questions thoroughly.
Always available for questions
Made sure we didnt mess up in lab. Helped students when our group had questions. went over procedures before we even started anything went over safety every class.
Doctor Rubio was very concerned for students. He made sure that the students understood what the lab was about for that day. He would walk around to make sure that the work that we were doing for the lab was being done correctly. He would ask if everything so okay and is we needed any help. He was also readily available for help outside of class as well.
3. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
Oversaw and related real life phenomona to our theories in lab.
I enjoyed the labs we conducted in class. I especially liked how this course coincided with the material we learned in class. It gave me a fuller understanding by hearing it in class and then seeing it in the lab. The demonstrations done in the beginning of the lab were helpful too. I also liked how we were given a week to complete the lab report from the lab manual.
I don't know how the course should have been ran but if I had to recommended a teacher to do it a certain way I would say do it Rubio's way.
Dr. Rubio was ready for each experiment and if needed he made clear tutorials.
He's very helpful
The length of each lab was shorter than I expected, which was good.
He's real energetic about chemistry. Really appreciated that. Made the class fun.
At times it felt like there was too much going on to only have him in the room for help.
I liked that he explained it with detail and that we made sure that we understood what was happening. I personally am not good with Chemistry but within the lab, it allows us to see certain things visually. Anybody can explain something visually but to explain it well where as you know what you are talking about versus explaining it horribly where as you do not now what you are talking about is two different things and Doctor Rubio knew exactly what he was talking about so everything was well explained.
4. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
He is a great teacher!
Great instructor, great course.
This course really showed me some of the things that I will have to know how to do to progress in my field of study.
I wish you were at Windward Community College.
It was fun. I enjoyed our experiments.
Doctor Rubio is a fun and great individual. He takes pride in what he teaches and he is one of the few professors that I have had that takes pride into what he or she is teaching. Not much professors take pride into what they are teaching so it makes it even harder to understand what is being taught but, Doctor Rubio takes that time to understand the material so that he can explain it to us in a way that we would understand which makes the class a little easier to deal with.
5. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
YES! Only Chemistry teacher who is really available and caring.
I would definitely recommend Dr. Rubio to other students because he really helps you.
Again yes I will and I already have, because the way he runs his courses makes it easy to pick up chemistry even if that's not what you're trying to get your degree in.
Yes, Dr. Rubio makes labs interesting and will go always be there to help.
Yes because he's always there
Yes and already sharing that with WCC stuidents.
Yes. Just like how he said. As long as you show up and do your work, you'll pass. Its fun. You dont have a write up a crazy lab.
YES! He is exceptional professor that know what his purpose is as a professor and that is to better the education of students like me.

Try put a better air condition in the classroom. The air condition was horrible and it would get hot at times and it made it hard to learn sometimes.

16. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He grades by the curve. Which gives student chance to pass the class.
He reminds us when his office is open and if we need help, to stop by.
Constantly stopping after his exaamples to see if anyone understands the material.
Aside from the ways we could learn to study from his lectures and homework ideas which is on the syllabus, he gives us practice exams to study for the upcoming tests.
Proffesor Rubio did not just go by the book but rather he had set up an outline where we benefited the most from, I.e. Connection topics and chapters that are related even if they were found in completely different sections.
17. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I like how Professor Rubio uses diagrams and colors during the lecture. The visuals that he used helped me to understand the material.
Like: class notes available online Dislike: Though, he is clear and detailed, he does not go step by step.
I like how we cover so many different topics in such a short amount of time.
I really like his teaching style with his tablet and how he uses well known examples for the problems
I liked how enthusiastic he is about Biochem and chemistry in general. He shares real life examples of how the things we are learning is applied into everyday life.
The course was taught in a way that I would not doze off. Proffesor Rubio always managed to get my attention by adding in little comments, fun facts, and experiences rather than just spewing content after content.
18. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
Interesting course.
It shrank a lot, probably due to people not being able to keep up.
He doesn't make the subject of biochemistry boring. He materials is kind of hard to understand but he does hep when we ask for it.
I think his teaching style is good, keep doing it.
Organic Chemistry is very difficult. I believe it would have helped me to understand it better if the fundamentals of it was taught for an extra session just recapping on it. For example getting the differences between Alkanes, Keytones, Acetal, Alcohols, you those kind of things.
19. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Yes I would because he uses class time very efficiently and he is nice and encourages you to see him during his office hours if you don't understand the material.
Yes, he knows his subject area well.
Yes, because style of teaching is very interactive and open.
Yes I would because even if the materials is hard, he will help you to understand it better. He is a very engaging professor and makes biochemistry interesting. His examples and practice problems in class are make the homework easy.
Yes I would. Those who are not huge on chemistry and find it difficult, they may still not fully grasp the whole idea of chemistry but they will like to learn about it with this teacher.
Yes. Proffesor Brent definitely knows his material and guarantee that you will not be entirely bored.

16. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He stopped lecture for questions by students. He also gave us feedback before exams and often gave us tips and clues for answers.
Email reminders and prompts to seek help or join study group if needed. He personally helped me get some help I needed on a personal basis this semester, and was caring throughout the ordeal
Being available at study sessions for students before exams to help with class material.
...
Being sure all students are safe during lab.
He returns papers back quickly and will answer any question, no matter how dumb they may be.
Brent Rubio showed concern by emailing students of what was coming up in the lectures periodically. He helped out by putting study guides for exams on Laulima.
He has offered numerous times to come and see him at his offices hours if we have any questions and concerns about our homework or material that we don't understand. Which has been very helpful.
He reminds us (in every email after a quiz or exam) how important it is to study.
He consistently mentions that he is available for help outside of class. He keeps his students updated on their class progress.
He is very flexible with with his students, especially if unforseen events happen. Also he is really open to students if there is any need for help.
17. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
He talked and went through his lectures quickly so it was difficult sometimes. He did, however, provide the answers for exams so that we could study and try to prepare for the possible questions which helped us know what exactly to study.
I was nervous to take the course as it has been a while since I took any science class. He made the class fun, and shared his knowledge of how all of the material relates to us in day to day living examples.
His presentation and breakdown of material.
...
His teaching skills were good. Always explained until we understood.
The subject was fun and the way he taught it made it very interesting even though the subject was hard.
Brent Rubio knows his subject very well.
My instructor is very smart and he teaches his classes very well. I think he is one of the best instructor that I have ever had. This semester.
Loved the course.
I enjoyed learning much about diabetes, anorexia and other health related topics.
Just the fact the it was simple and clear. Also when there are any notes for the day he would upload it to laulima so then if any students missed that days lecture there are still the notes there.
18. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
He kept the class engaged and interested.
Excellent instructor!
...
The course is very fun. I would recommend Dr. Rubio to friends. He's fun & very chill.
Class is not easy but taking good notes and joining a great study group his class can be a lot of fun and easier to understand.
It's very enjoying to take.
Very well put together. If the student applies themselves the course is easy to pass. Thereʻs a lot of work but helps along the way.
Someone give this guy a permenant teaching position.
19. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Yes, unless his quick talking and lectures will be difficult for them.
Yes! He is interesting to listen to and creates a fun and memorable learning experience.
Yes, he is fair and straight foward.
...
Yes I would. Not only is he chill but he always makes us students feel comfortable with the work that is given.
Yes, Dr. Rubio is a great teacher and he makes learning a hard subject easier to understand and will make the class fun and interesting.
I would recommend Brent Rubio to other students because he makes chemistry fun.
Yes, I would because he explain the material very well and helps you as much as he can to understand the material.
Yes because he gives examples throughout the lessons every day.
Download and save everything he uploads on Laulima, because it well help you at the end of the semester for your final. Donʻt hesitate to ask for help.
YES!!!! Probably one the few professor that makes you understand the work, gives you clear work, and is not a douche bag. If he were teaching high school, there wouldn't be as dumb kids out there. Also in the college there would be less students stressed out about their chemistry and organic bio exams.

Making sure that all students were safe while doing lab works.
He is very interactive with the class.
Constantly reminded us about our safety. Answered all questions we had, even when it was dumb.
Brent Rubio always made safety a priority. Brent Rubio was more concerned with creating a safe environment especially in a laboratory setting.
He helps the students and makes sure we all understand and have fun in lab.
Reminding students of available office hours.
...
He made sure we had our safety glasses on at all times during lab and emphasized safety.
He is very helpful when unforeseen incidents happen to his students. Even when we don't ask for help, mainly so we don't look bad he would quietly help us get back on track. Also if there was anything missing from the lab, he would provide supplies if he could.
3. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
he lets us have fun while making sure that we had all our work completed.
Dr. Rubio has fun communicating his expertise and creates a relaxed atmosphere in which we can ask questions, learn, and have fun at the same time.
He was really engaged in his teaching.
I liked that his class was fun and he made it very interesting by not making it so strict, we could have fun and he joked around with us.
I enjoyed learning how to make soap.
...
He was very laid back and often did the lab for us.
He thought it in a way that was understandable; he did do the labs in a fast way but he would always slowed down if a student asked him to. I also like the experiments that he did; those experiments were something that could keep our attention and also help us understand that everything does have something to do with chemistry.
4. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
Not only was the course fun but also the work that was given.
This was a great course, in most of the labs, I was able to get a better understanding of the lecture class in areas that I struggled to understand.
Nothing. Just awesome.

16. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He always remind us he is available to help us during his office hours
He provides outside help (offices hours) and through email, answers within 24 hours. He gives the students a lot of opportunities to gain the extra points. He communicates the student's progress as a class and makes sure that we succeed.
He does a really good job of making sure the students understand the concepts and gives us exam preps, which has helped.
Professor Rubio was always able to offer extra help if we needed it, or he would answer any/all questions we had during class. HE always would also open up his lab class for anyone that needed extra help in order to better understand the material.
Would stop after his examples and ask if anyone needs help understanding
Constantly reminded us that if we had trouble with homework or studying we can meet in during office hours. He was very adamant and welcoming in reminding us of that.
constantly reviewing subjects
He offered one on one help to any student who went to his office during his office hours, and often suggested that students make use of that time.
17. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I do not like all the conversations we have to do because it gets confuse
I really liked how his notes were so organized, even if I didn't understand certain sections there would be labeled sections that match the textbook. Also, he would relate some examples to his own personal experiences and very sociable with the class. Made chemistry fun. I liked the review days, not many classes do that.
I like his teaching methods. Makes learning fun
I really liked how he gave real life examples of everything that we were talking about. He did not teach anything that had an emptiness to it, everything was able to be grasped.
Nothing
He explained procedures or formulas one step at a time. And if he felt the class, as a whole, didn't fully understand he would go over it over and over again.
he's very knowledgeable in the subject
Practice exam
I like that he is enthusiastic about chemistry, and gives examples of chemical reactions that we all see and use in our everyday life.
18. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
He makes chemistry sounds so easy because he is really good at explaining the subjects
I didn't really have any interest in Chemistry and thought it would be boring will all the numbers but after this course it wasn't too bad for an elective. Although, the test and quizzes seemed hard at times, its actually simple.
I would definitely recommend this class and professor to anyone who is thinking of working in the health or science field
He is an amazing professor and I believe I better understand the material and have a greater lead going farther in chemistry.
It was fun and well-paced.
nothing else

16. How did the instructor show concern for students?
During Dr.Rubio's office hours he is very thorough and understanding when I do not understand a specific concept or subject. He breaks it down for me and because he is an intuitive individual he is able to conceptualize a better method of explaining complex topics to fit my individual needs. I took Chem 151 and Biochemistry with Dr.Rubio and I did not understand the topics and went to his office hours. During his office hours he notified me that I was "making things too complicated" and he helped me realize that chemistry is not out of reach in terms of my ability to being able to understand it. I really appreciate him for saying this since it has helped me with all of my classes and this proves that Dr.Rubio is an exceptional professor. Dr.Rubio also provides a curriculum that fits the needs of every student because of his categorization of different types of students which are; students that are able to learn everything from the beginning, students that start understanding halfway through, and students that understand everything near the end of the semester. I am one of the students that understands things near the end of the semester. He also provides fun and interesting methods of receiving extra credit which applies to what we are learning in class.
Students requested a day of study before exams and he provided us that day to ask questions about the study guide.
He explains Chemistry concepts very well and easy to understand.
Dr. Rubio listens to and explains the answers to my questions thoroughly whenever I've asked him to further my understanding on topics related to the course. He also makes great use of visuals and demonstrations. I'm glad to hear that he loves his job :)
He makes his quizzes in the end of his classes to make sure that everyone has a chance to take them.
When he sees that his students don't understand the lesson, or when his students ask questions, he will pause the lesson to make sure everyone understands it, then move on.
He explains concepts in detail avoiding confusion. He always asks if the class understands and offers office hours if anyone needs help. He also offers a very fair class curve that grades on the overall learning curve of the class, which shows his concern for his students success.
He posts scores right away and allows students to see the averages, to get a better idea of how well they are doing.
He doesn't really show concern because he already has expectations for the class to meet. Because the class is a 200 level course, he believes that the class should be difficult and that the students should be responsible in keeping up with the pace and material.
He makes his quizes at the end of class so that the people who happen to come in late in class get the oppurtunity to take it.
17. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
You can tell Dr.Rubio comes from a military background because of how structured his lessons are. He always finishes on time and always has time to answer student questions. He appeals to all types of learning styles because he not only displays the notes, but also provides visual examples such as ball and chain representations in class and live experiments. He encourages students to copy down the notes he is writing and he engages the entire class by asking questions about different molecules or how certain methods should be done. In general he is a fun and lighthearted individual that teaches extremely complex methods with ease and occasionally gives students a good laugh.
Sometimes his class was extremely hard and others fairly simple there didn't seem to be consistency. Biochem is a very challenging subject and i felt sometimes he expected us to know things that he does. He would use unfamiliar science vocabulary and didn't really explain what it meant. It threw me and some people off. Most people taking that class have not learned what he has and I think he should have dumbed down the explanation so everyone could understand it.
I like that Doctor. Rubio is very well organize and he goes by the book as well as his personal experience with the Chemistry studies.
I'm not a fan of pop quizzes as I have a busy schedule and need to prioritize my daily tasks making pop quizzes more stressful than they should be. Other than that the course is fair.
I like how he used real life applications to his explanations of concepts.
As a high school student doing this running start course, first, I liked how he gave us the syllabus which had the whole semester planned out. In high school, we don't get this type of syllabus, instead we have to wait until our teacher actually assigns our homework and exams. Another thing I liked about his was of teaching the course was how he used his examples very well. I like how he has his visual aids, which helps me understand the lesson better. Another thing I like would be the extra credits! Like this one! We have five extra credits for this semester and each one is equivalent to one percent of our grades, which I think is better, compared to high school, since it's actually easier to do. I also like that he posts our quiz and exam results on the day we take them. But one thing I wish he could have done was to post our current grades maybe? I don't know if it's just me but in high school, I got used to having online sites, such as Edline, in which my teachers use to update our grades on.
There is practically nothing to dislike about his class. The class has a brisk pace, but never overwhelming. Real life and personal experiences are commonly used as examples in class to express the relativity of the content of this course to everyday life. Also, the practice exams and quizzes are a valuable preparation for the exams. They let me know exactly what will be covered and where my weak points are.
I like the way he posts all of his notes on Laulima, it is difficult to take down all of the notes verbatim at times, so this makes life much easier. He also knows exactly what he is talking about. It's only natural for us to make mistakes and so when he does make a mistake, he allows students to correct minor errors without making a big fuss.
I liked that he wasn't strict and that he was fair. I disliked his pop quizzes because it was hard keeping up with the homework. With my OCD, I would have preferred if he did collect homework because I would have completed them no matter what.
I liked how organized his lectures were and how he has all of the class notes on laulima.
I liked that he gave real life examples of the material that he was teaching.
very concise
18. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
His background is very inspiring to me. He worked very hard and he inspires me to work hard as well.
His course is very forgiving, at least some extra credit chances were provided. Tests were multiple choice which made remembering certain things a lot simpler.
I think that Doctor Rubio course is very useful because you can apply it in real life.
Love the class. Just hate the pop quizzes :p
He's cool.
BioChemistry, in my opinion, is a tough course but if you put most of your time and effort into it, it will get easier.
Dr. Rubio is probably the best teacher I have had here at HCC. His passion and knowledge of chemistry is unrivaled by other teachers in their own department at HCC, in my opinion. His instructional abilities are the true definition of a high quality teacher and should be the benchmark of all instructors at this campus.
It is difficult, but not impossible. After all, it is a level 200 course.
I would like to say thank you. I am still a high school student and I was not expecting the class to be this difficult. It was a real eye opener. I believe that I am now better prepared than my other peers for college because of your grading scale, which is calculated with quizzes and exams only.
You shouldn't fall behind in the homework because the homework helps you understand the material.
clearly knows his stuff
19. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
I would absolutely recommend Brent Rubio because he is a one-of-a-kind professor.
Rubio is challenging. I would recommend him to students who are very interested in science as their major. He enjoyed talking about it and seemed very knowledgeable. For people who just want the grade I would recommend taking someone else. He doesn't explain concepts well for people who don't have some science background.
Yes, I would highly recommend Doctor Rubio's class to other students because he is a very good, awesome, the best Chemistry professor I ever meet.
Yes because he is a very good instructor & he's got a winning personality to boot!
Yes. He makes sure you are prepared for college.
Yes I would. Because he will actually do his best to help his students out, not only in class but also outside of class, during his office hours. When a student misses a class, the student can also go on their Laulima where they can just print out the notes he took down during class.
Highly recommended professor! He keeps the class interesting with real world examples and has a way of explanation that is comprehensive to the students but still textbook perfect.
Yes, if the student is either very interested in the class or is required to take it. If the student wants to actually learn and grasp the information, I would recommend them to take it from Rubio. If they are just trying to get by, I would not recommend him. This class takes time and the drive to succeed.
I would recommend Brent Rubio, but only for those who have a strong understanding of general chemistry, and for those who are responsible in completing homework problems that are not collected.
I would recommend his class, especially for Running Start Students, because you get to expereince what a college class feels like rigorously.
yeah, if they want to take a stupidly difficult science class
20. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?
Knowledgeable. Professional. Inspirational.
Challenging, caring, baffling
Best Professor in HCC
Efficient, well-prepared, eclectic
Chill, Friendly, Intelligent
Helpful, knowledgeable, and dedicated.
Knowledgeable, passionate, and resourceful.
Intellectual, understanding, clear.
I would describe Brent Rubio as jubilant (for organic chemistry) and knowledgeable.
Did you think this one up on your own? haha
Friedly Smart Youthful
21. Other comments:
Hope I get a good grade and understand the material
I said it all, no need to add more comments.

I was wondering why you only put extra credit questions on the easiest quiz (the first one) you had given us, and not on the other quizzes or on any of the exams.
Give more extra credit, please.

16. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Professor Rubio showed concern for students when he would tell us that he is always available during office hours and we are paying him to teach us.
His practice exams and quizzes made sure we were prepared for any actual exam
Professor Rubio always prepare a practice exam for us, so we know what would the exam look like and what kind of question would be on the exam. He also uses surprise quizzes to test how we understand the lectures.
Professor Rubio has shown concern for us students in many ways like allowing us a whole class period to prepare for our exams, providing us with a study guide of each quiz, and giving us clear heads up on what to study for.
He always made it a point to bring up that he is always available during his office hours to ask questions. In class he
He helped us anyway he could in classroom if we were having trouble in the subject.
Brent Rubio shows concern by always having time for his students by making good lectures and providing study guides for us.
He answers our questions specifically.
Dr. Brent Rubio shows his concerns for the students by engaging them when help is needed.
He states that we can ask him through email if we want and always replies to my emails. Really quick with replying *thumbs up*
He always made sure there was a study/review day before every major exam and provided extra material for students to use for studying. Always willing to help anyone and everyone and was always positive and upbeat.
Dr. Brent Rubio offers ample time to meet one on one to go over any questions we may have.
Always available
Encourages his students to make use of his office hours.
He answered questions when students approached him for help.
Asks us if we need help with our work.
Always walking around, going over the context until we understand, asking us if we need help and advising us as well.
17. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I learned a lot in this chemistry class. Most of the material was very interesting. I hope in the future I can take more science classes from professor Rubio.
he actually cared whether or not we understood the material and made sure that we did understand
Like: He always has fun stuffs to show as example of the lecture. Prof. Rubio always upload lectures son laulima, so I would know what I have missed in class. Dislike: The lectures that he uploaded on laulima are short-lived. If I don't download the lectures to my computer right after class , they would disappear within 2-5 days.
I really enjoyed the way Professor Rubio taught the course. He kept our attention by relating lecture material to things we use, see, or know about in real life. He also gets along well with the students and always shows up to class with an enthusiastic attitude. Its hard for me to dislike the course but if I had to pick something, i'd say the tests and quizzes should be more challenging for the amount of material he gives us to study.
I enjoyed how well organized Professor Rubio is in his lectures and lab. He is very enthusiastic and excited when talking about chemistry. I also enjoyed the fact that he gave us the option to do some extra-credit opportunities. He is always willing to help and answer any questions that his students have. I ask liked how in some instances Professor Rubio would bring up stories that related to the topic he was discussing because it helped me gain a better grasp at what he was teaching at that particular time.
I liked everything about the course
I liked the fact that he was very passionate about chemistry.
I like the way he teach. I understand it very well.
I liked that he gives us study guides for exams, but I dislike that he changes them when we actually get the real exam. I like that he shows us examples to help us understand his teachings.
I really liked his teaching style. Tough, but seriously one of the best professors I've had in a long time.
His lectures were easy to understand, he didn't overload us with information. He was easy to listen to and his excitement for the subject made me excited to learn and pay attention.
I disliked how Dr. Brent Rubio didn't ask the class whether or not we understood the information, and didn't encourage questions.
Easy to fallow
I really liked how he made the labs fun, and his excitement for chemistry.
Keeping exam and quiz scores private were good for those who did not want to reveal their test scores. However, he did reveal the students who scored the top 5 highest scores and that encouraged students to study with those people. It urged students to work and study together, overall, brining scores and grades up as well as making new friends. It helped to set a comfortable and pleasurable experience for lectures.
I like that this class was interesting to learn about.
I like the different materials he uses and analogies to help us understand what Chemistry is all about.
18. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
Professor Rubio is one of the coolest professors I've ever met. When I say cool I don't mean that he gives his students slack but he treats everyone fairly. His quizzes and test are easy if you do attend class everyday, take notes, ask for help and keep up with the reading the chapters.
it is a much better science class than any other ive taken
In my opion, I like this class because I can understand what's going on in class easy. Prof. Rubio's lectures are everything I need to learn for the every exam.
The class is awesome, all I gotta say is just take it and you'll know.
This class is not a fly-by kind of course by any means, Professor Rubio encourages his students to learn and he forces them to by giving them the right tools in order for them to succeed. For example, he gave out practice exams, pop-quizzes, and always put a copy of his lectures on Laulima and all these really helped me in this course. I think that he should continue the good work he is doing.
I think it he can relate to students better because he is younger.
Keep up the good work.
His class is very understanding.
This course requires a lot of physical participation. I learned that the hard way. Also, he instilled that being late is no bueno and really affects my grade.
He is one of the best teachers I've had.
Overall, he is an intelligent teacher whom really knows his stuff!
good teacher
I enjoyed taking his class, even though I struggled with the material
Encouraging students to study together help the "smarter" ones to understand the material more and helps the less studious ones to actually understand the lectures and pass the quizzes/exams. Smart move on his part to intentionally reveal the top five testers for each quiz/exam.
Fun class!
AWESOME! EXTREMELY GREAT!
19. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
I would definitely recommend Brent Rubio to other students. He is a really good professor. I feel that professor Rubio is young and he can relate to majority of the students. He is very well organized. He cares about you and your schooling.
I would recommend this clas for anyone looking for a science class and actually want to learn in the process
I would recommend Brent Rubio to other students because as an introduction class, there is not much pressure in this course. Prof. Rubio organizes everything for us, so we can just follow the instruction.
Yes, i'd definitely would and already have, recommended his class to many of my friends who need a natural science because his style of teaching is great and the material isn't boring.
I would definitely recommend Professor Rubio to other students because I think he is an approachable professor and I enjoy his teaching style.
Yes the class was taught very clearly and made easy to understand.
Totally because he is cool.
Yes, because he is a good teacher.
Yes! I would recommend his class because he is a great teacher who knows what he is doing.
Yeah, I actually referred my boyfriend to take his course next semester. Good stuff to learn and fun course.
He makes chemistry enjoyable and easy to understand
Yes I would recommend students for any of Dr. Rubio's classes. You will learn a lot from him and he will learn from you.
Yes, he's very fresh, friendly, and funny. However, I would advise them to pay close attention, because he moves very quickly!
Yes, for some one that hates science this class wasn't too bad
I would if they are requried to take the course
I would recommend him to other students because of the way he encourages students to work together/study together. In his class, people will eventually learn how to work together to get better scores on tests/quizzes.
Yes, because I had it for Lab and it was a fun class to be in!
Yes I would reccomend Professor Rubio to other students. He is very clear on his lectures and make sure we understand the context.

He doesn't assign homework, which is good for some. But I think maybe 5-10 questions for homework would help students better prepare for upcoming pop quizzes and exams. Students tend to take advantage of having no homework and would take notes and forget about them for a while. Then when a pop quiz comes up, they score low because they didn't have an incentive to look through their notes prior to the pop quizzes. Homework that will have to be turned in and graded will definitely help students to look through their notes more often every week. Perhaps maybe 5-10 questions of the material covered during lecture would suffice once every week.

2. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He shows his concerns by helping the students when needed.
When dealing with certain chemicals/etc. he would handle it himself as a safety precaution which is very responsible of him since some students may be clumsy. He enforced the safety goggle/glasses rule as well.
He makes eye contact when demonstrating/explaining labs and he walks around the classroom while we're in the process of our lab, to closely monitor us and be readily available to answer any and all questions.
He always offers help to any student that doesnt understand the lab.
Checks up on everybody while doing lab
In this lab class Professor Rubio showed concern for his students by always having us follow proper lab safety guidelines and taking time to explain each experiment in detail.
Very helpful!
always walking around to check that the students are doing the lab correctly so that they won't have to do it again. Always willing to answer any questions students have. If we had an exam in the CHEM100 class he would make it a slightly easier lab so that we would have more time to study.
Encouraged everyone to ask questions, and to make use of his office hours
Brent Rubio always walked around the class and asked his students if they need his help during lab. If students are performing the lab dangerously, he instantly stops and direct us into another safer direction. He explains everything clearly and is aware of all his students.
Anytime we needed help in the lab he was right there to assist us.
Professor Rubio should concern for students when he would check if everyone signed in. He also explained the safety rules every time we had lab just to make sure that no one gets hurt.
He answers if we have any questions.
Responsive and explained a lot during lab.
By having one on one time with them or spreading around to every group/ lab partners.
3. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I like that I have learned new things that I haven't learned before. I like that his lab class is fun, exciting, and interesting.
He makes learning fun.
I enjoyed his clear passion for the field. His excitement and interest was contagious and got many of us more involved!
I like how Dr. Rubio taught this course by giving examples/demonstrations before we start the lab. There is nothing that I disliked about him.
Everything ok
I liked how this course does labs parallel to what we are learning in the lecture class. I also like how er are given a whole week to complete a lab paper. Don't really have any dislikes for this class but if I had to pick it would be that there are a small amount of desks for the beginning of the class.
Very helpful!
I liked how he always explained the lab thoroughly at the beginning of each class. The labs were enjoyable, not stressful.
I enjoyed the labs, and some of the lectures
I liked how he was able to allow us to experience the different experiments in this course. Ive never worked with entities that changed color, formed crystals, create soap and so on which I found extremely fun and interesting. I honestly get nervous in lab, but because Professor Rubio helps and corrects us positively throughout the way, it made me feel comfortable to work in lab.
I enjoyed the hands on part actually getting to do the experiments.
I enjoyed the labs and all the fun things we did. I learned a lot and it was very interesting learning new things. I love mixing chemicals and working in small groups.
I like his teaching.
I liked how the labs were actually quite interesting and intriguing.
Liked that he could make a boring subject like chemistry very interesting.
4. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?

This lab is awesome! Students will look forward to this class everyday!
Dr. Rubio, you are an excellent teacher in lecturing and doing lab assignments. You have used your skills to share among with many students. We learned a lot from you.
Easy to fallow
This course was fun, it really helps you remember ideas, theories, and concepts learned in the lecture class because the material is parallel and you can see for yourself how reactions take place and such.

It was easier than i thought it was going to be.
It was interesting, and I enjoyed tsking it, even though I struggled with the material
Brent Rubio's course is always on the move. Everyone in class gets to participate and be involved with his experiments. It is a very great way for the class to interact with one another and learn together as well.
I love how the labs were only an hour and 30 minutes depending on how fast you get done with the lab.
Keep up the good work.
Was good.
He makes all the labs exciting.

16. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He always made himself available after class hours and made the effort throughout the whole semester to reassure all students that he was there to help us
Brent Rubio has unannounced quizzes which allow for us to study more often.
He is very passionate about science. He encourages visiting office hours for additional help. He also gives out extra credit for his students to do better and redeem ourselves if we need extra points.
Mr. Rubio provides study guides before exams, giving us ample time to prepare for them. The quizzes aren't scheduled, allowing Mr. Rubio to make sure we're studying. He constantly tells us to ask questions during class. He has fair office hours, and he worries when we don't use them. When the whole class did terrible on a quiz (I think it was quiz 5), he allowed the entire class to re-take it (with changes to the questions but covering the same material).
Dr. Rubio was always make sure all the students understand the lessons he is giving. He wants to help students pass so in cases where more than half of the class fail a pop quiz. He will create an announced quiz to help the students grade. He will also give out optional research papers for extra points for any students who needs extra points to help with their grade. He will also scan through on tests or quizzes and see if a student answered the question right, and if not then he will give them chance to look over their papers and double check before they turn it in.
He constantly reminded us that he was available after class, during his office hours to help us.
17. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I liked how he knew the material he was talking about as well how he was not teaching out of a book rather his notes and then using his examples and making it more interesting especially being an early class he managed to make it interesting
Very knowledgeable
I like how he is very organized. I also enjoy that he does fun demos in class and he isn't monotone and makes chemistry very interesting. Chemistry is not easy, but he explains well and is always willing to give extra help.
Mr. Rubio makes the otherwise daunting subject of Chemistry exceptionally more entertaining. He teaches from the book, but it doesn't feel like it. The 75 minute lecture classes go by quick. He applies what we're learning to everyday life, making lessons feel more applicable and relevant. For example, he demonstrated the strength of electrolytes by illuminating light bulbs using Powerade (which did a pretty crappy job compared to salt water). Mr. Rubio is very down-to-earth, regularly sharing his college experiences/stories with the class and relating them to the subject material.
He is young and enthusiastic. It was easy to relate with his examples, because his examples are very logic and easy to see and understand. He always answer questions clearly and didn't mind even when students ask questions from last 2 lessons ago. I like that he does fun experiments and demonstrations in class too.
He's very enthusiastic about the subject. He knows what he's talking about, he doesn't just read from a text book, and uses actually examples of problems to explain. His personality really uplifts the class, and there's never really a boring time in his class. He loves what he does, and you can really tell.
18. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
That it was a great choice and im glad i was able learn from his course

Wonderful instructor and makes class fun. Thank you for giving us extra credit chance and preparing us for quizzes and exams. Thank you for also being a cool professor!
Mr. Rubio is, by far, one of the best professors (of any subjects) I've ever had the privilege to learn from. I will definitely be borrowing some of his techniques when I become an English professor.
He is very helpful. Through middle of the semester I had to deal with some family matter that I needed to drop the class, but the last day of dropping class have passed. He was very understanding and was willing to give me "N" grade even though he had it on his syllabus that he will not give "N" grade. I was fortunate enough that I didn't have to drop the class, and stayed back and enjoyed the rest of the semester with Dr. Rubio.
He da bomb.
19. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Definitely, chemistry being a hard class for many he makes it fun and something that anyone can grasp to
Yes, he is very efficient with notes.
YES! He is fun, very passionate about teaching science and is very understanding.
Definitely. The subject is fairly difficult, but Mr. Rubio makes it very accessible. His lectures are lively and informational enough to keep most students awake (I only dose-off because the class is early in the morning, and Hawaii traffic is disgusting). The work isn't too easy, but it isn't difficult either. He is a fair grader and very approachable. He's very passionate about Chemistry, but he doesn't take things too seriously--he knows how to take/make jokes. Mr. Rubio is an amazing, all-around instructor.
YES! I will not only recommend to other students, but I will be very happy to take any of his classes.
yes, he is always avaiable for help and makes the class seem less boring

20. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?
Knowledgeable and Caring for his students

Enthusiastic Fun Serious

I like that you give quizzes, tests and extra credit. I think it's hard to get a good grade though because our grade is only based on things we cant make up. I think that maybe class work would be a good thing to get graded on, so that it adds some points to our grade and also we will be able to learn more.
Mr. Rubio's Chemistry course is, by far, my favorite non-social-science science course I've taken at HCC.
He never miss any of the class sessions. He was always available on his office hours and encourages students to go see him on his office hours. He also encourages students to attend school workshops if they want extra points. Lastly, after taking this class. I'm considering in looking into majoring in chemistry. Yes, Dr. Rubio made chemistry fun and easy to understand.

2. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Dr Rubio is a very engaged professor and always tried to make Chemistry enjoyable
He actually cared, he didn't just sit at his desk doing nothing
He always reminds students to turn in their work, and was always cooperate with students who needed extra time to complete their assignments. In addition that this was a lab class, Mr. Rubio was very strict on the safety of the students which was a very important rule in a science lab.
He encourages us to keep trying, even when we do poorly on the lab quizzes. He constantly reminds us that things break in labs, making performing the labs a little less scary.
By letting us know always that if anyone needed help that he was there to help us
He reminds us about safety first. He also helped us with any experiments and questions we had.
3. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I would have wanted to see a little more explanation on what exactly we were going to be quiz on
He loves what he does and it shows.
I like that he's always engage in the lab activities. He was always there working with the students on the activities.
The labs were fun and straightforward, and the course was graded in a straightforward manner (either you do the labs or you don't). Mr. Rubio teaches lab with the same energy and humor he teaches lectures with, making Chem lab a fun, informative lab also.
The labs we did
I liked that it was to the point. No non sense and unnecessary things. Thats he ways a class should be taught. I also liked that the labs were simple enough for us to complete mostly on our own.
4. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
This is a good way to enter into Chemistry with a good professor
My favorite instructor by far.
His energy in the class. Mr. Rubio's energetic personality just makes the class really fun. Although he had done all the experiments every year, he make it like it's his first time doing it which makes that students feel good and get really engage with the activities.
Mr. Rubio is an amazing Chemistry instructor.
Im so happy that he prints the labs for us, it makes it so much more less stressful for myself because it is a book that i dont have to worry about spending money
Thank you for teaching a great Lab course. It was fun and I learned a lot from it.
5. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Yes, because Dr Rubio always tries to help you understand the concepts and is always going around making sure have a good grasp in the concepts we are covering
HELL YEAH I DO!!
YES! Mr. Rubio is a very understanding professor. He will try his best to find ways to help students and make sure that everybody is safe in the lab.
Definitely. Unlike some instructors, Mr. Rubio seems to genuinely care about his students and he makes his subject accessible. I don't know where I'd use log/sin/cos in real life, but I know various ways I could apply Chemistry in real life.
Definitely.
Yes!! His class is fun and makes it interesting. He also wants the best for everyone.

Very good professor
You should show more explosions, combustions, ignitions, blow things up, and more explosions.
A lot more fun than the Geology lab course I took a couple semesters ago (although I found Geology interesting in it's own right). The labs were very interactive and surprising and working with dangerous materials/reactions is always exciting.
Thank You Dr.Rubio!!!!! You are one of the best professors here at HCC! You should be proud!

16. How did the instructor show concern for students?
he went through problems we had with the book and guided us through the reviews for the exams.
good
Even though he places pop quizzes randomly throughout the semester, he would always give hints to when the quizzes would be (not-so-pop quizzes, not-so-randomly-placed). He was also really cool about the exams, and always scheduled a study period the class before each exam, so that we had time to discuss the material with our peers during class time.
The way that Dr. Rubio shows concern for his students is by always asking the class if we understand the material. He tries to find different of explaining the concept if we do not understand it the first way.
study periods
Dr. Rubio always makes time for us to study before exams and is very understanding when I have emergence scheduling conflicts with the class.
Dr. Rubio showed his concern for students by posting grades online to show how the class did overall. With that information, I was able to see where I stood amongst the class, and to check whether I needed to adjust my study habits.
he would go over questions and help students with any problems they may have.
He was always helpful with all questions and he was always very understanding if anything came up that would make one miss class and he always made a person feel welcome.
He encourages students to come to see him if students do not understand the topic in class.
Dr. Rubio provides many reasonable opportunities for a student to improve their grade.
He always asked if we understood before we went on, and he would always ask if we needed another example or if we wanted him to explain the concepts and materials over again.
He notifies them if they're doing poorly and even provides them with appropriate advice that would help and encourage them to succeed in his class.
he would always tell us he's here for ask and don't feel afraid to contact him or ask him questions
by providing an easier way to understand the material in his lectures.
17. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
innovative way of teaching and everything was clear
everything was good
Dr. Rubio's class was so well-organized that just copying what he had on the projector allowed me to organize my own notes --- and my notes are never organized. I knew what chapter and section each topic was from, so I could easily find the corresponding section in the book after the lectures (although I never really needed to, since Dr. Rubio's lectures were made to simplify what was in the book, anyway). I really hated chemistry in high school, but Dr. Rubio made it a little less intimidating a lot more fun (as fun as chemistry can get, I suppose).
What I like about Dr. Rubio's class is that he makes things simple to understand. Chemistry is a challenging subject to learn but I think that with his teaching methods each concept is more easy to understand.
It's great that he teaches the lab, too. He is very good at relating own personal experiences and real life events towards the material learned in class. He makes class very interesting compared to big lecture classes that do no usually incorporate any material related outside of class to understand material better.
Dr. Rubio uses fun and engaging imagery to help his students remember things better.
The way that Dr. Rubio taught the course was well-organized. I liked how he started each class by summarizing the things we did during the previous class to refresh our memories. I also liked how he explained the subject manner with some examples. One small dislike is that he sometimes went off a tangent.
I liked that he was able to connect with students and understanding how to interpret chemistry, and making it easier for students to understand.
He class was easy to understand and attend. I liked his class over all.
I liked the way he interact with us students and makes chemistry fun! He is uses and talks about interesting ways and examples to understanding the topic. Also the notes he puts up on laulima are very helpful.
I like that Dr. Rubio gives great examples of chemistry, it makes learning the subject enjoyable. I like that Dr. Rubio goes straight to the important material, the material is not vague at all, specific equations and laws are pointed out for the class to understand. I very much disliked the quizzes, they gave me a heart attack every class around 9:30, it kept me very conscious of keeping up with the homework, but it none the less, I was always still scared :(
He was very interesting, he made it relevant to everyday life. The way he taught wasn't like most professors, he used examples from his experience and he made it interesting because he was in our shoes once.
I dislike that he does not review homework or makes it necessary to turn in, but relies on pop quizzes instead.
Rubio's class is very cool, but i just feel like im not good at this subject so i didn't like it as much as other classes
There was nothing that I disliked in the course. What I did like is the easy way he lectured and made the material more understanding then the actual book itself.
18. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
thanks man first chem course ireally did enjoy. sorry for always passing out in the first row.
nothing else
There's a lot of math involved, but even the students who had a little harder time making the calculations seemed to do pretty well in his class. Somehow, Dr. Rubio was able to teach the fundamentals of scientific algebra alongside the course material within a semester, and a lot of my friends' math skills improved within that time.
He is a great teacher and I really enjoyed the course. I am planning on taking another chemistry class (biochemistry) from him in the future.
The course was very informative, albeit very fast as well. Dr. Rubio is an excellent teacher.
This course was a great learning experience. Dr. Rubio not only covered the basics of the course, but also threw out some fun facts relating to chemistry, which made the class even more interesting.
It is a well conducted and interesting one.
Great professor and very good at keeping us engaged in class.
He makes chemistry fun and interesting.
Dr. Rubio is an amazing teacher if you, I was not looking forward to this course because I never had a good experience with this subject, however Dr. Rubio truly has changed my mind, I definitely appreciate this subject now.
He is a very good teacher. I think he is by far one of the best i ever had.
i thought it was a good class!
It's a great course, and I wish he also taught chem 162 and 162 lab
19. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
yes hes a great teacher
Even if Dr. Rubio wasn't the only professor who taught 161, I'd totally recommend him to other students. He teaches in the most modest and down-to-earth way that even those who have a hard time with science are able to at least understand the concepts --- and that's more than half the battle.
YES! He is an amazing teacher.
Yes, I would recommend him to other students due to the fact that it's a course where students can actually learn chemistry first hand from one who is very knowledgeable and experienced in his field. Also, class is small and it allows for a lot of clarification compared to big lecture classes where professors don't usually interact with their students.
Yes. He makes Chemistry relatively easy to understand and is very sociable with his students.
Yes, thorough explanations.
I would absolutely recommend other students to take Dr. Rubio's class. He teaches in a way that everyone can understand, by going straight to the point of the subject. Also, he does offer extra credit to boost up your grades.
Yes, because you will understand the fundamentals of basic chem.
Yes because makes his class very understandable and easy to navigate through.
Most definitely yes. Like I mentioned before he makes it fun and easy to understand. And his grading is very fair to students.
I would definitely recommend Dr. Rubio to other students, because he shows chemistry's better side. Dr. Rubio is very passionate about chemistry, he teaches with great enthusiasm.
Yes, because he is always there for help, and he is clear and precise on what is needed and what will be on the test, and he is a far teacher.
I would definitely recommend Professor Rubio because he is the only professor that has shown interest in his students individual success in his course.
yes! because he's really nice and understands
Yes, I would recommend this class to any student that needed this course for there major.

2. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Dr. Rubio offers alternatives to students who are unable to attend/work in the laboratory class.
he would always encourage questions
He told us to use gloves if needed, told us which chemicals we shouldnt mess with. Was always walking around making sure everyone was on task and if anyone needed help he was there.
Always willing to listen and answer questions
He would walk around the lab and assist us if we were having trouble
He makes us try to figure out the material before giving answers.
If we broke glassware, Dr. Rubio's priority was making sure everyone was ok and that no one was injured, and told us not to worry because the glassware could always be replaced. Same with spills: if we got anything in our eyes, he told us to go straight to the eye wash station and not to worry about getting water all over the floor and everything. The was actually one lab where the procedures said not to touch this corrosive basic substance, but everyone ended up touching it anyway, and he didn't get mad or judge us (well, he probably judged us, actually); he just set out an acid for us to neutralize our hands with. Our safety always came first --- except for when joking was appropriate and called for, then his priorities would be joking and then helping us out with whatever we needed help with.
Dr. Rubio showed his concern for students by checking up on each group in the lab. If groups needed help, he was there to offer some assistance.
He personally notified them or talked to them in class about their performances and offered options in which they can have a chance to pursue success in this lab.
By walking around and overlooking the lab experiments while they happen. Also he would step in and help if the group was having trouble.
allows us to stay however long we would like until we fully understand
very strict on lab procedures to ensure safety
Dr. Rubio shows concern for his students by always asking questions to make sure tat the concept is understood.
Dr. Rubio quickly helps his students and walks around class to check up on students instead of staying at his desk.
3. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
He gives detailed instruction before the lab, but only monitors and guides when the lab is underway.
i liked that he let us go to do our labs but he was always around walking around the room to see we were doing alright
It was fair, and straight forward. I liked how he made the labs fun by making sure we were safe yet learning all the concepts.
I liked that he always showed what to do before doing the lab.
He made it clear and if you're completed with the lab you're free to go.
I especially liked that we got to choose our own groups and that he made the labs interesting.
Even though I felt really stupid with him looking over our shoulders to check what we were doing, it was really helpful, especially when we WERE BEING stupid. For everyone who hadn't read the procedures prior to coming to class (which was a good half of us), he touched on the procedures while introducing the materials for us. He babied us, while at the same time, not --- if that makes any sense. It was really helpful, though.
I liked how there was a quiz before each lab, to ensure that students understood the lab. Also, I liked how he explained what we were going to do in the lab, and the science behind it before we started.
I like that was there to answer any question without actually giving the answer. and that he was easy to talk too.
Lab experiments were quick and informative
I like that the course is simple. Just study for the quiz, do the lab, and turn in the lab.
I like that he demonstrates the lab experiments to his students prior to letting the students doing the experiments. He shares experiments done outside of lab related to what experiments we were conducting in class to understand experiments better.
4. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
The course is quite fun to do, actually.
it was fun, enjoyed it
He is Awesome.
He is great
Overall great course, study hard and it will show.
This lab was probably the most fun and exciting lab course I've taken thus far. I guess it helps when you have a professor who's so enthusiastic about his subject that he tries to share his excitement for the subject through his teaching with his students.
Dr. Rubio set up the course lab in a way that enabled students to get hands on with each experiment with very clear instructions to complete them.
challenging but easy if you keep up with work
This course was good to do (especially when taking the class along with it) because it helped me understand each subject better since the lab provides on hand examples.
5. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Yes, his teaching style and accessibility makes him a great teacher.
yes! because he's very nice and knows what hes talking about
Yes. He made the lab fun by doing some of the experiments for us, if he thought there was a hazard.
Yes the class is fun and he makes it easy
Yes, just overall a great professor
I would recommend Dr. Rubio to other student because he teaches with great passion, it makes me enjoy chemistry.
I know this is anonymous, but I'm just gonna say what I said in the lecture survey --- Dr. Rubio is literally the only professor who teaches this course, but even if he wasn't, I'd recommend him to other students because he knows how to reach all kinds of students. Even if you totally suck at science, Dr. Rubio does a great job at explaining things.
I would surely recommend Dr. Rubio to other students. The lab was a useful learning experience. It enabled students to the science behind the experiment. Dr. Rubio would explain that science and the lab, so that we would understand it.
Yes, I would recommend this course because it is a fun and easy way to learn about chem 161
yes. learn a lot with his method of teaching
Yes
Yes I would because he is easy going and what you need to do is clearly stated.

16. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He sets up review days before quizzes. This really helps with studying and asking questions before exam. He answers all questions and reminds us we can visit him in his office if you need extra help.
He reminded students that he is available outside of class and organized study sessions.
Brent Rubio emphasized office hours and emailing him about help almost every class, especially before and after exams. He also emails students who are doing poorly to ask them how he could help them. For students who are doing well he congratulates them and encourages them to keep up their good work. Brent Rubio also is a big believer in study groups. To promote this, he posts the names of students with the top scores from exams so that students who are doing poorly can work with them.
By telling his students if they need help understanding about the chapter that they should meet up him during his office hours to go over the chapter.
He always made sure we understood the material and is always open for any questions you may have.
Really showed concern for the individual student.
He was always offering help, outside of class in his office or emails, whatever it took for help he was prepared to do it.
17. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
Rubio is very interesting to listen to. He explains everything in a simple way, making it easy to learn and remember. I don't really like his obsession with numbers and chemical drawings. It makes it somewhat hard to learn for the exam without using flashcards. He's a bit flaming but I'm fine with that. Oh, he should also use the entire class time. He tends to release it really early.
I really liked the demos that were done.
I like that he wrote notes with us throughout the lecture. He starts with a blank sheet on the overhead, and as he lectures he takes notes that we can copy. Also, if we miss these notes or miss a class, he posts the notes on Laulima. I like how he only posts it for a limited time, because it teaches us responsibility and helps us be accountable.
I like how Rubio gives us a study guide a week or two before our exams. There is nothing that i dislike on how Rubio teaches the course.
I liked how he gave us study guides, it really helped me to remember the material. And often times he would tell us interesting facts about what he is teaching and tell us some of his past experiences.
Dr. Rubio is a cool instuctor...no complaints.
I liked the simplicity, notes and that's it. Up to you to study. I liked the study sessions as well.
18. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
I enjoyed it.
Nothing.
I like how Brent Rubio shares his personal scientific experiences with us. He also relates many of the topics to real life situations or current events. I also like that his material is the most up-to-date.
He is an excellent teacher that knows his subject very well.
Dr rubio is awesome, even though class isnt mandatory and he doesnt mid if you are late because you are responsible for yourself, i still like to go because you never know when he would give any extra credit and i learn better through his lecture tha the notes itself
EYesxcellent course!
Maybe try to make the notes more interesting, or lectures more interesting, because it is a lot of information to gather.
19. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Yes, he's a cool person and a great lecturer. He's definitely not boring.
Yes. The amount of study is a lot though I think this is expected from a science class.
Yes! Great teacher! Very knowledgeable of material and teaches with humor, excitement, and passion. He also relates the material to current events.
Yes i would recommend Brent Rubio to other students because he knows how to teach his subject very well.
Yes, he helps you anytime and encourages you to ask him for help
Yes....chemistry is fun due to his teaching style.
Yes I would, he is very knowlegable and knows what he is doing.

I also like how he provides study guides that reflect the actual exams. It keeps us on track on what we have to study. He also specifies what homework problems will be most related to our exam and most related to what we need to know for a 100 level class. Mahalos for a great semester, care, and passion for teaching! I learned a lot and enjoyed your teaching style!

2. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He organized study sessions, made sure proper lab techniques were used, and offered help outside of class.
By reminding us on how important it is to attend all the lab days in order to get a good grade.
He would always be around for help and is available if we have any questions
He really cared for our education.
At the beginning of every lab he went over thoroughly through the lab procedures. He also did a safety brief and always made sure we wore safety glasses. He walked around class to make sure no one would hurt themselves by inappropriately using the class materials/chemicals. He also answered any questions that students had throughout our experiments.
He helps us in labs and sometimes shows what to do.
3. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I really liked how efficient the classes were.
He makes all the labs really fun, it was never boring.
I liked how we did interesting labs and he would be there to help us along the way.
Dr. Rubio is very patient and takes time for each student.
I especially like how he related certain experiments to real-life situations. Simple things like tie-dye-ing a t-shirt was fun but also allowed us to understand why an activity like that actually works.
I liked it. Lab is great. ...A lot of waiting at times.
4. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
Keep it up!
Cool...Right on!
Dr Rubio is always willing to help and also allowed us to do a lab with his other science section if we couldn't make it to our section.
It is fun and education.

16. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He always kept reminding us of office hours and to do homework. Gives extra credit homework to boost our grades.
I'm really not sure.
17. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I dislike how we get the quizzes after we learn a new chapter unrelated to the quiz. Information overload for us. Handwriting is sometimes illegible. It's hard and scary to stop and ask him about illegible words or numbers while he's on a roll lecturing. No grade for homework is a double-edged sword that usually works against the people that needs to do it the most. On the contrary, I also like how it is not mandatory. Maybe make the important chapters have a required and graded homework. *I also dislike when he walks around the class while we're taking a quiz. The quiz is already nerve racking, him walking around judging our answers on the spot is very distracting and doesn't help. I like how he uses different kinds of analogies, examples and illustrations to help us understand the material easier.
I don't expect him to baby students but check in with students to make that they understand what is being discussed. To some people 15 is plenty of time for a quiz but some people freeze up on little things such as a quiz so I think 30 minutes would be beneficial for quizzes.
18. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
Very smart and concise. Knows and enjoys his field very well.
Brent is an excellent teacher who knows what he is teaching.
19. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Definitely. He lectures very well. The class is challenging but easy to pass as long as you do the homework and study for quizzes and exams (like all classes). He really wants you to pass because he gives lots of extra credits, curves grade, drops lowest score on quiz and many more things to help you.
Yes, he's an awesome teacher.

16. How did the instructor show concern for students?
he made sure we all were able to get our class notes.
Allowed for those to catch up and offered e extra time for help during or after class
After an exam, he would post our scores right away and informs us if anyone needs help, we just have to let him know.
Very clear instructions and he encourages us to go see him in his office if we have trouble.
he would ask questions to make sure that we understand the material. and when i asked about migraines (i had to skip classes because my migraines were too painful), he told me different ways i could possibly get rid of them because he used to get them in college too.
Dr. Rubio made sure that he explained the material he needed students to understand. He also made sure that he was available if students had any questions or concerns regarding the topic or lecture we were being tested.
He ALWAYS made it clear to us that he is ALWAYS available to help us, if ever we needed the attention/assistance.
Dr. Rubio showed concerned for our class by being available and communicating with us. He encouraged us to ask him for help or that he was available to help whenever we needed.
He stressed that if we needed help, especially before exams, that he was available for questions and he strongly encouraged us to ask.
encouraged students to see him during office hours answered questions put out study material
Tells student to come ask for help if any students need any.
Repeatedly informs us that he's available for office hours, always asks if there are any questions, and is always reminding us of the notes he puts up and important dates.

17. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
his notes
The ingesting facts related to the lecturing
He knows his material really well and he is always enthusiastic during lectures.
I especially like that he posts lecture notes and then deletes them after a week. This forces people to check their laulima every day. I think this is a good idea.
i liked the lecture and the slides he put up on the screen. he was very enthusiastic about chemistry, and it's always nice to have a teacher who loves his or her subject. the only thing i didn't like were that the slides were up on laulima to download, but only for a day or two. would have been nice to have them all up on laulima. also, the course was more about knowing chemistry and not doing the math. I was a little disappointed about that, because i love the math in chemistry, but overall, the class was fun.
What I liked about Dr. Rubio was that he was easy to engage with. His class lectures were a bit tedious, but what do you really expect if you're trying to understand different kinds of structures or keywords. At least he wasn't monotonous like how most professors are-- his sense of humor never failed to amuse and entertain his students.
EVERYTHING! He is amazing! Best instructor I had in the years I've been in college. He explains everything so we understand the material & also breaks it down so we can comprehend the chapter. Gives the best examples and makes Chemistry fun! And i personally dislike Chem.
I liked the way Dr. Rubio taught his course because he made learning relatable to everyday things we could understand and even gave us examples from his own experiences sometimes.
the lectures were tied directly to the textbook, which made it convenient to study Dr. Rubio primarily used the lecture format; perhaps he could have varied his teaching methods
The practice exam, it sort of pin point what material will be covered on the exam.
He really seems to love the subject matter and it shows in what he says and does in class. All the classes are engaging even if the subject matter is not. I love the notes he posts up after class, mostly because I've given up trying to draw the diagrams needed for the course. It's also paced nicely, both the lectures and the course material.

18. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
This who take Chen 100 in the future should take his course
He should keep on doing what he does.
Just a very good course.
taking the lab and the class at the same time helps a lot.
He's fun and full of life! #nerdswag.
Take it! You'll never regret it! Exams are all based on what he covers in his lectures. So come to class! :) He's not boring, so it's not one of those dragging lectures.
He's a very cool and funny teacher. He makes learning fun
Dr. Rubio is very knowledgeable of the subject matter Chemistry 100 includes other general science topics; I would like the course to go deeper into chemistry topics; rather than general science
AWESOME!

19. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
yeah i would bc hes a good professor & his passion for the subject shows
Yes. Cool fun and easy to get along with. Really helpful.
Yes, I would because he makes Chemistry interesting, not boring.
Yes. He is very clear and makes learning chemistry, which is very a very hard subject, easier. He is clear and concise. If you follow his directions, you should get a passing grade.
yes. he's a fun and excited teacher that makes learning chemistry fun and not overly complicated.
Yes. Because questions #16-18.
YES YES YES! Awesome teacher, even if i'm not getting an A in his class. I am willing to re-take his class next semester to get that A because I believe he knows his material and makes it enjoyable for students to learn!
I totally would recommend him, you don't really feel like your in class, everything is exciting and like an "aha"!! Moment, because he explains them in relatable situations.
yes; he makes the subject matter less boring as it could be under other types of instructors
Yes. Will enjoy class and learn.
YES. For all the reasons above, plus his class is entertaining so you won't get bored unless you just HATE the subject matter, and even then you'll be pretty hard pressed not to just follow along anyway.
