Please offer advanced class. Also, more class times if possible.

Introduce lei making and kihei earlier in the semester so that student can learn more lei styles and have more time to do the kihei.

Absolutely nothing!

Everything was great. Doing the tests one by one was scary but it was better than doing them in front of others.

Myuh needs to improve their drop box so as to allow the audio files on laulima. That is all, everything else was MEAN!!!

Clearer guidelines for the paper would help a lot.

Maybe making this class a twice a week class. This class involves a lot of group work and practice and I believe that more in class time would have allowed us to be better in general. Its hard to turn the frame of mind that you must be in for Oli Makawalu, on and off so sparingly.

maybe the groups should be rotated ... between the different papaku groupings... Also more instruction in moolelo and traditional kaona regarding the different papas would be helpful before the papers were written.

16. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....

One of the best Hawaiian classes i have ever had. This is a teacher...not a lecturer which manoa has too much of. I as a older student am grateful for a teacher who is interested in subject and believes in what she is teaching. The freedom she has given students to think creatively and comparatively is a lost thing in modern education. She makes me want to continue at Manoa and continue in my education.

I really enjoyed this class. Itwas great learning about this part of Hawaiian culture. The idea of makawalu can be used in other areas of Hawaiian Studies.

Great wealth of knowledge, not the greatest at explaining it. The ideas in this class are very complex, and sometimes students need a little more coaching on their ideas than what's given.

She is a wonderful and talented kumu, I loved taking this class and oli is not my comfort zone at all. I want to eventually work on my lei making and oli skills until I can feel comfortable. Shes inspirational and very real.

When Nicole was giving instruction about the different chants she was extremely knowledgeable about the subjects discussed and has a vast depth in Kaona. Often in the class i wish we had been lectured more about oli as she was very interesting when she lectured . a good example was when she spoke about Kanaloa and the different seasons, and how they were tied to the equinoxes of the sun... also when she discussed things like the rising of the sun and setting of it in lehua... in the west... These things were very interesting and more instruction on this type of mana'o and how it fits into chants would be very useful. Mahalo

I think the class should be help at least twice a week. I think it would be better if the groups could meet more often and it would give us more interaction with our kumu.

Great class for abstract thinkers who already have a strong grasp on Hawaiian ways of thinking. But people who need clear guidelines should not take this class

Yes and No. She would talk about the subject at hand but would go off the subject and got carried away. There were a couple of times when she did not show and anticipated her arrival.

She shows concern for her students by helping them out when we never know what was going on, and by giving examples....

Always available after class for extra help.

She makes herself available to us and demonstrates expectations in a student friendly way.

THat she is a good kumu

Really knows material well and able to break it down so that its understandable and relevant.

She should be teaching more courses in Waimanalo, Hula Olapa would be great.

most definately, for the simple fact that her teaching is not boring and it captures the attention of the student, at least it did mine.

Yes, she knows her subjuct well and knows how to make it understandable and fun to learn.

Definitely. She is a student as well as a teacher, she understands our situation and works to support our learning. She is a great teacher, in that she tells us the stories of Hawaii that we in most cases had no idea about. She brings the past to life.

I just want to say that Mehana did an awesome job as a teacher. I have learned alot from her. Very knowledgeable person. I wish this class could go on another semester. Thank you Mahana!
