7. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
The passion Mr. Kalk displayed in regards to mathematics and the different topics we discussed, esp. probability. His passion spilled over onto me, and I found myself getting stoked when solving problems. Lots of applicable material learned this semester that I will def. apply in my life.
The logic of this class was quite new to me. This class inspired me to continue pursuing this subject.

What helped me through this course was the online homework. I like how if I'm stuck on a problem it shows me how to get the answer step by step.
Most helpful was probably group class work, it helped me see different approaches to assignments. Most valuable was the innovative learning style of the professor.
I enjoyed looking at how we approach numbers and math compared to other and older cultures. It helped me open my eyes to concepts that I took for granted. I have new mathematical tools for critical thinking and counting and figuring out probabilities.

The online math lab, it was helpful in the time of practice, although the lab and Mr. kalk teaching were very diffrent, Mr kalk teaching was easier but it al together became quiet confusing.

His quirky sense of humor and his contagious passion and love with math. Also his patience when dealing with students like me, who struggle with math and logic. He also encouraged office hours and spent time with me one on one helping me grasp concepts I was struggling with. GREAT teacher.
Mr. Kalk has a wide knowledge-base that makes him the go-to guy for math questions.
He was paitent and very calm while teaching with me and other classmates

Even though Mr. Kalk likes to kill trees. I find it helpful that he gave out handouts throughout the semester. It helped me to stay organized and I could always refer back to my handout notes.
Very interesting person and smart, whose honest concern for students to improve shows in his work.
He has a deep knowledge and love for math that is charming and personable.
He is very passionate about math. He has a funny dry sense of humor that make students feel comfortable. He always makes time to help students and ask us to justify our answers to make sure we understand them.

I felt that he really knew what he was doing, and he has a passion for teaching that is motivating to want to learn from him.
Anytime I needed assistance with a problem he was always quick to respond via e-mail or in person.
He knew that the value of this class and how important it is for us students and he was helpful with the making up and catching up alone with the math lab for us as students whom of that were sick or family members that were sick and were very understanding so that we were able to fulfill the course.
He was available outside of class and even had a class tutor who was also available outside and during class time.

I think he should give out review sheets at least a week before the exam.
Teach us less and give us more time to work with the concepts that you do teach us. Jonathan is a fun and humble and genuinely interesting teacher.
I think everything was great. More extra credit would have been better.
I think he needs to improve his teaching style. He is super smart when it comes to Math so he would explain things more complicated then they needed to be. He needs to start off with a simple explanation and slowly build up to the bigger picture. I found it at times easier to read the explanations on the homework because I was not able to get a grasp on what he was trying to explain. It would be useful if after he passed out a worksheet, he would also pass out a answer sheet so that I know I'm doing the problem in the correct way. This would help prepare better for the tests.
if he could give out extra credit,no quizes, more review sheets to practice on, give out review sheets one week prior to the tests, and a couple of days to review before finals.

I can't think of anything to improve in this course!
Maybe spend a little more time on chapters 10 and 11. Also have the final on only the last chapters learned from mid-term to the end.
His class were not all to me seemed that hard but for myself whom were bad at english reading and understanding through out my teens, I believe students would succeed in that math department way better if, and which this course to me seems to be an essientrial; so I think considering a math lab class is a do to go for it, cause most stdent can't make it for tutoring and signing up for a class with lab and no interuption of other class mix up would do just fine.
To have a more set syllabus for test dates and to give study guides a week before the tests.

He is a great teacher
In the beginning of the semester, I dreaded this class. Now I'm happy to say I learned a lot and this was the greatest math class I ever had. Never knew counting numbers would be fun.
I really liked the open seating and especially their arrangement in the class. It made me feel like a part of the class I and enjoyed having other older students who stimulated similar questions in my class.
Thank you Jonathan! You really made this class enjoyable. Your love for people and teaching shows through.
Aside from Mr. Kalk, the program math lab was very helpful and one of the best programs I worked on.
I think he's an amazing, nice, smart guy but I don't think he's good at teaching the material, or at least that to someone like me who is a slow learner when it comes to Math.
overall he's a helpful teacher,he's always available, but I felt like we had to write about math rather than actually doing math. If he could teach in a more simpler way just like our homework online. He sometimes don't make sense when he's lecturing, but when it comes to the homework it makes much more sense. He teaches very fast and that's what discourages me.

Learning how to teach math in a way that i would have never imagined was very helpful. I will definitely use what I have learned from this class and use the techniques to teach math.
The group discussions were the most helpful. To take what we were learning and collaborate with others really helped me to see if I was understanding the content or not; it also helped me to see the same content from a different view, which is so critical in teaching. Also, the type of program we were using, the on-line whiteboard, is a really neat tool that's fun to use!
Clarity of purpose and consistency in approaching the subject material.
I really learned a lot about thinking outside of the box.
I like having meetings and discussing the course material. Mr. Kalk made things seem easier to understand when I could not understand the text.

He always encouraged us to ask questions to make sure we understood the information.
Jonathan's passion for mathematics really shows through his teaching and therefore makes learning fun and easy in his class. He did an excellent job at explaining just about EVERYTHING. It really helped to know that if we had a question, he wouldn't mind taking the time to elaborate. Also his mastery of the online program was really helpful during class time; time wasn't wasted at all. He was always well prepared.

Professor Kalk is very knowledgeable. He knows a great deal about all of the things that he teaches.

22. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Different text book or additional reference illustrating what an elementary school teacher or child may actually be looking at in the type of math we are covering. Less responsibility on us to prove concepts and more instruction as to the important elements or truths we need to grasp. Some exercises regarding proofs forces us to think outside the box but as an introductory course, more general instruction would create less frustration on the part of the students.
I liked the class the way that it was taught.
none, I think the students need to apply themselves in order to be successful. There is nothing wrong with his style and method of teaching. I think it is up to the student to understand the material.

My experience in this class was excellent, and I will hopefully be a better teacher because of it! If all my teachers were like Jonathan, I might've enjoyed math a little more than I did.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Excellent communicator, very kind and very helpful. Course work frustrating but I think I learned a lot in terms of not taking anything for granted and sympathizing with a child who feels completely lost when facing a new way of thinking or new material...

The amount of communication between the instructor and the other students.
At first, I thought that I wouldn't like the class. But I really enjoy being in an online classroom. It is nice to interact with the students and hear an instructors voice over the internet and still be able to be home with my children.
The think that I found most valuable and helpful about the course is the working together on problems and the continual feed back to provide the opportunity to improve.
Definately not the book. Tutor examples and examples in class were the only things that were helpful. Ryland was very good at understanding my confusion and explaining it, though I have no Idea how he got his explaintion from the book. The book is awful! No examples just confusing words and then questions, it could have been in another language to be easier. There are lots of programs to translate other languages not many for english.
This course really helped me to see many different ways math can be interpreted; English is actually a larger part of math than I thought, and the way in which things are stated make a HUGE difference in what might be communicated. Through working with others, it helped me to view the same math problem from many different angles and understand where misunderstandings and misinterpretations might occur. I discovered some new ways to help with explaining new/difficult concepts.

I think the quickness and thoroughness of responses to any questions was very helpful, along with patience when explaining concepts.
He is always open for discussion and conducts class very well.
The thing taht is most valuable and helpful about the instructor is that he is willing to spend the extra time to further explain information that may not be clearly understood.
When he would draw examples. Talking about them... if you don't understand to begin with changing order of words doesn't help. I use to think Math was easy to do, not here. The worst part was the book, class would probably have been better if there was a different book, this one is not good.
Our instructor was very patient with the entire class and thorough in his explanations. If he noticed a few struggling, he made sure that everyone understood the topic before moving on and gave examples in class to help with any problems that any of us might have had. I felt that he was able to identify the strengths/weaknesses of our class and did a great job at pairing/grouping us together in class in order to optimize our learning both in and out of class, and not only from him but from each other. He is very knowledgeable of this topic and does an excellent job at breaking down terminology to the nitty-gritty.
22. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
I wish that there were stricter rules applied to assignment due dates and class start time. I felt that many students took advantage of the relaxed structure and would come to class late and would not follow through with their part of group assignments.

I would suggest some improvement with forums, not all the students are active enough in them. I'm not sure if that can be changed however since it depends more on the students.
CHANGE BOOK!! More examples for us that learn differently. The first 1/2 of the semester was soooooooo confusing! I cannot say that I understand what we learned already. Lots of words, not enough examples.
The time period is a struggle. A class that was a little later in the evening would be even better. Other than that I am enjoying the class. The online, interactive classroom setting is awesome! Being able to discuss problems with others, work in small groups on our own "whiteboards" and being able to see what others are doing at the same time, I think is great. If only all math classes actually had this same type of learning environment...because math should be interactive and fun!
