Questions were always encouraged, Kalk always met in the tutoring center after class to help students.
I found very helpful that my instructor would make sure each student understood the lesson before moving on to the next. Also, I found the quizzes after the lessons very helpful, it showed each of us that we knew the lesson and we all fully understand.

He's always willing to help outside of class!
He was always available to answer questions and tutoring
His personality and availability also his knowledge about other subjects related to math and how things were connected
He is a kind, smart instructor who is never condescending towards students. You can tell that he wants his students to succeed, and he prepares his students for classes in the future. If you ask/give a "dumb" question/answer he won't embarrass you but rather finds a way to relate that to the subject (although sometimes it's not at all). He doesn't just state that he is available for help outside of class so he can claim that he's good teacher, but time to meet students at a convenient time.
If we ever needed to ask him questions about any of the homework or lessons, he was always reachable. He also makes sure each of his students knows the lesson well before moving on to the next, if one of his students doesn't understand he will go-over the lesson again so that we will understand it more.

The basic concepts that we go over before getting to the more complicated stuff.
i found that Jonathan is a most helpful guy.
I founded that Math 100 was most valuable and helpful because it introduced me to a different way of thinking and using math in my everyday life.
The most valuable things that I've learned through this course, is that it made think very hard and critical to understand each assignment. But I have progressed very well and that I pretty much hated word problems, but as time went on, it kind of came to a point that I have learn a lot from this and that now I can say I'm loving math.

I liked that Math 100 provided a different source of learning about Math. It opened my mind to become even more knowledgable of the way life works in terms of Mathematics. Although it is a difficult course and takes a lot more than just numbers and letters, it helped me to think harder and appreciate math in its most raw form.
The materials we used were relevant in daily life and not merely abstract ideas.
Strangely, I found the Journals to be extremely helpful! I never thought that a journal would be of any use in a math class. However being as we studied probability as well as reasoning is was nice to just be able to vent or get excited about specific problems or sections I also really enjoyed the use of online tutorials suggested by Jon. These really opened my eyes to math in a completely different perspective.
Great class I always felt challenged but never overwhelmed.
Jonathan Kalk doesn't just teach us the material in our textbooks, he implores us to make personal connections with what we're learning and encourages us to find ways to apply it to the world around us. Jonathan teaches that math is so much more than computing numbers aimlessly, rather- math is an important and invaluable application for life.

He's able to help you whenever you have questions. And within the my math lab there is an ask teacher button so that the problem you need help on will be emailed to your instructor so that you are able to help us.
I found that the most valuable and helpful about Jonathan is that he has an interesting learning style.
The most helpful thing about Kalk, that he is really on point to be willing to help out when in need to understand more better from class time and outside of class. With his teaching I have learned so much that I'm in shack that I'm making an effort to want to know this concepts of learning more of word problems.

He is a very genuine person, who really cares about his students of all ages. He takes a lot of pride in the work he does and is always on top of things. He makes sure that everyone understands his material and breaks things down step by step in order to achieve success.
He seemed to be able to find many ways to explain concepts and his passion for the subject made it an enjoyable experience to learn from him.
Jon always makes time for us students he provided a comfortable learning environment as was always within a phone call or e-mails reach I enjoyed his class and teaching style he taught me that I can have the math brain I want even though I didn't think I was the Mathhy type.
Dr. Kalk is very patient and able to explain these challenging concepts very well. He provides great examples that really helped me understand what we were learning and also always trying to provide help for any one that might need it.
He is very knowledgeable, as well as passionate about math. He always makes a sincere and adamant effort to ensure that his students understand the concepts he teaches in class. He also expresses a sincere desire for his students to succeed inside and outside of his classroom. Jonathan is a really good teacher, and taking his class was enjoyable.

He felt more like a friend than a teacher. Very kind and made us interact, even though it was a math class. He made sure we understand the content learned for that day.

He was always willing to help any of us inside and outside of class with homework and classwork and even study for the tests. He is always on it with his e-mails, he got back to me in a flash with a novel about suggestions on how to do a problem or breaking it down step by step.
He explains his teaching very well. When i ask a question, he answers it to the full extent of his knowledge.

Everything looks good, and everything in place about it. I just wished that the school would give him more time in our Math 100 classes. One hour is not good enough to learn everything in time.
I don't think that there is anything that needs to improve as of right now. But what ever Kalk is doing, it's very excellent and on point to my understanding that I've learned a lot from him.
Sometimes have a difficult time understanding the concept or lessons being thought. Once was very frustrated could could not understand what the assignment is about.
I know this may be weird coming from an adult at my age, but my learning style was not like the young babies in our class that are fresh out of high school -- I needed you to slow down alittle bit.
One suggestion if possible, would be to extend the time of the classes. sometimes, fifty minutes isn't always enough time to understand the work material.
Jonathan mentioned in class that this semester was the first time he was trying the journal application concept, and I think that was a great idea. Keep that concept!!! Weekly journals really helped to emphasize, as well as broaden our understanding of the material we were learning in class.
Go over worksheets that are given throughout the course. It would better help us understand what we are doing. Or if anything provide an answer key.

I just wished our class was a little bit longer that one hour. Other than that, his class looking solid.
Being that math is my hardest subject, I enjoyed this Math class it was a very interesting class. It helped me to build my confident in the subject, and build my learning and studying habits.
It was very well to have meet Kalk, and that I've learned so much that I'm so thankful that he was part of my learning ability to get this concepts of word problems for me to have made it through his course. Excellent work and keep on trucking with your ability to teaching us students.
Thank you Mr. Kalk for always wanting to help me and of course that tutoring session we did once helped if I got a good grade on my test!

Most helpful was probably group class work, it helped me see different approaches to assignments. Most valuable was the innovative learning style of the professor.
at the beginning it was going okay until later he went super fast and quized us on the materials that we just learned in a short period of time.

I learned a lot of new things in this course and Mr. Kalk was very eager and willing to help us learn and he made it enjoyable to learn the material.

I enjoyed looking at how we approach numbers and math compared to other and older cultures. It helped me open my eyes to concepts that I took for granted. I have new mathematical tools for critical thinking and counting and figuring out probabilities.
The concepts were interesting and applied to real world issues
The online math lab, it was helpful in the time of practice, although the lab and Mr. kalk teaching were very diffrent, Mr kalk teaching was easier but it al together became quiet confusing.
The teacher is so funny and makes math more interesting than other teachers.
The passion Mr. Kalk displayed in regards to mathematics and the different topics we discussed, esp. probability. His passion spilled over onto me, and I found myself getting stoked when solving problems. Lots of applicable material learned this semester that I will def. apply in my life.
I have learned how to apply my math skills to my daily life.

He knew that the value of this class and how important it is for us students and he was helpful with the making up and catching up alone with the math lab for us as students whom of that were sick or family members that were sick and were very understanding so that we were able to fulfill the course.
He was available outside of class and even had a class tutor who was also available outside and during class time.
His quirky sense of humor and his contagious passion and love with math. Also his patience when dealing with students like me, who struggle with math and logic. He also encouraged office hours and spent time with me one on one helping me grasp concepts I was struggling with. GREAT teacher.
Anytime I needed assistance with a problem he was always quick to respond via e-mail or in person.
Even though Mr. Kalk likes to kill trees. I find it helpful that he gave out handouts throughout the semester. It helped me to stay organized and I could always refer back to my handout notes.

He is very passionate about math. He has a funny dry sense of humor that make students feel comfortable. He always makes time to help students and ask us to justify our answers to make sure we understand them.

Teach us less and give us more time to work with the concepts that you do teach us. Jonathan is a fun and humble and genuinely interesting teacher.
I think he needs to improve his teaching style. He is super smart when it comes to Math so he would explain things more complicated then they needed to be. He needs to start off with a simple explanation and slowly build up to the bigger picture. I found it at times easier to read the explanations on the homework because I was not able to get a grasp on what he was trying to explain. It would be useful if after he passed out a worksheet, he would also pass out a answer sheet so that I know I'm doing the problem in the correct way. This would help prepare better for the tests.
His class were not all to me seemed that hard but for myself whom were bad at english reading and understanding through out my teens, I believe students would succeed in that math department way better if, and which this course to me seems to be an essientrial; so I think considering a math lab class is a do to go for it, cause most stdent can't make it for tutoring and signing up for a class with lab and no interuption of other class mix up would do just fine.
To have a more set syllabus for test dates and to give study guides a week before the tests.

I really liked the open seating and especially their arrangement in the class. It made me feel like a part of the class I and enjoyed having other older students who stimulated similar questions in my class.
overall he's a helpful teacher,he's always available, but I felt like we had to write about math rather than actually doing math. If he could teach in a more simpler way just like our homework online. He sometimes don't make sense when he's lecturing, but when it comes to the homework it makes much more sense. He teaches very fast and that's what discourages me.

The group discussions were the most helpful. To take what we were learning and collaborate with others really helped me to see if I was understanding the content or not; it also helped me to see the same content from a different view, which is so critical in teaching. Also, the type of program we were using, the on-line whiteboard, is a really neat tool that's fun to use!
I really learned a lot about thinking outside of the box.
Learning how to teach math in a way that i would have never imagined was very helpful. I will definitely use what I have learned from this class and use the techniques to teach math.

Jonathan's passion for mathematics really shows through his teaching and therefore makes learning fun and easy in his class. He did an excellent job at explaining just about EVERYTHING. It really helped to know that if we had a question, he wouldn't mind taking the time to elaborate. Also his mastery of the online program was really helpful during class time; time wasn't wasted at all. He was always well prepared.

More frequent homework assignments.
Different text book or additional reference illustrating what an elementary school teacher or child may actually be looking at in the type of math we are covering. Less responsibility on us to prove concepts and more instruction as to the important elements or truths we need to grasp. Some exercises regarding proofs forces us to think outside the box but as an introductory course, more general instruction would create less frustration on the part of the students.
none, I think the students need to apply themselves in order to be successful. There is nothing wrong with his style and method of teaching. I think it is up to the student to understand the material.

The think that I found most valuable and helpful about the course is the working together on problems and the continual feed back to provide the opportunity to improve.
This course really helped me to see many different ways math can be interpreted; English is actually a larger part of math than I thought, and the way in which things are stated make a HUGE difference in what might be communicated. Through working with others, it helped me to view the same math problem from many different angles and understand where misunderstandings and misinterpretations might occur. I discovered some new ways to help with explaining new/difficult concepts.
The amount of communication between the instructor and the other students.
Definately not the book. Tutor examples and examples in class were the only things that were helpful. Ryland was very good at understanding my confusion and explaining it, though I have no Idea how he got his explaintion from the book. The book is awful! No examples just confusing words and then questions, it could have been in another language to be easier. There are lots of programs to translate other languages not many for english.
At first, I thought that I wouldn't like the class. But I really enjoy being in an online classroom. It is nice to interact with the students and hear an instructors voice over the internet and still be able to be home with my children.

21. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
The thing taht is most valuable and helpful about the instructor is that he is willing to spend the extra time to further explain information that may not be clearly understood.
Our instructor was very patient with the entire class and thorough in his explanations. If he noticed a few struggling, he made sure that everyone understood the topic before moving on and gave examples in class to help with any problems that any of us might have had. I felt that he was able to identify the strengths/weaknesses of our class and did a great job at pairing/grouping us together in class in order to optimize our learning both in and out of class, and not only from him but from each other. He is very knowledgeable of this topic and does an excellent job at breaking down terminology to the nitty-gritty.
I think the quickness and thoroughness of responses to any questions was very helpful, along with patience when explaining concepts.
When he would draw examples. Talking about them... if you don't understand to begin with changing order of words doesn't help. I use to think Math was easy to do, not here. The worst part was the book, class would probably have been better if there was a different book, this one is not good.
He is always open for discussion and conducts class very well.
22. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
I would suggest some improvement with forums, not all the students are active enough in them. I'm not sure if that can be changed however since it depends more on the students.
The time period is a struggle. A class that was a little later in the evening would be even better. Other than that I am enjoying the class. The online, interactive classroom setting is awesome! Being able to discuss problems with others, work in small groups on our own "whiteboards" and being able to see what others are doing at the same time, I think is great. If only all math classes actually had this same type of learning environment...because math should be interactive and fun!
I wish that there were stricter rules applied to assignment due dates and class start time. I felt that many students took advantage of the relaxed structure and would come to class late and would not follow through with their part of group assignments.
CHANGE BOOK!! More examples for us that learn differently. The first 1/2 of the semester was soooooooo confusing! I cannot say that I understand what we learned already. Lots of words, not enough examples.
