18. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

Every day I learned something new about HTML/CSS and building webpages! This is an excellent class and I'd definitely recommend it to any DMED student!

The way William Albritton taught the class made me want to come to class and learn.

I liked learning the content of programing in HTML

I liked how each of the daily assignments were built upon the knowledge and learning outcomes gained from the previous assignment(s). Our instructor, William Albritton made great use of the rooms equipment and presented well. I liked how our instructor showed the HTML structure on one screen (electronic whiteboard), and the CSS code on another (projector screen), back and forth, in reverse, multiple times, until we got it right. The presentation of the concepts were top-notch and taught me HTML and CSS. I liked how the course was incredibly organized. I liked the pace and progression of learning objectives and assignments. I liked all of the example web pages the instructor created and presented. It really does make the subject interesting. I liked how the instructor allowed everyone the creative control of their own work. It made the course interesting for the students. I liked how the instructor was there to help you if you struggle and ask for help. I liked how he walked around the room offering to help. I liked how you know exactly where you stand in terms of grading each day. I liked the instructor's enthusiasm and energy. I liked how he treated everyone. He very level and fair. No bias, no prejudice. His demeanor friendly and perfect. As a DMED major, I liked how we learned practical and valuable skills in this course. I liked how this course and instructor are available in both Fall and Spring. All of that is the best.

19. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

There wasn't one thing I disliked about this class.

That the computers we worked on had the applications we needed, we did not have to buy them.

20. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.

This course was awesome! Nuff sed!

Only way this course can me improved is let the students pick their partners for the final project.

I think one way this course could have been improved is if the lab was open for DMED students to work in, so that we could have more access to Adobe software, and we could spend more time on our assignments and projects.

Let's just leave all the improvements to the course up to this instructor. From my student perspective it is perfect.

Prof. Albritton is a fantastic teacher!! He was very helpful and his lessons were very clear and precise. I had a lot of fun in this class and really enjoyed it. Not only is Prof. Albritton a great teacher, but he's very funny and approachable. This guy deserves a raise or an award...or BOTH!

If any student was left behind in this course; it was their own choice. There were several students with attendance issues. I witnessed some of it in all my classes this semester. As sad as it is, I feel mentioning this is important because the participation(or non-participation) of your classmates can affect the learning experience. I know a lot of that is beyond our control and you can't make anyone do something. I'm just pointing it out.

I took the class online. I liked how I was able to watch the lecture videos anytime I wanted, or on TV if I wanted.

hands on learning

the fact that it was online and i didnt have an obligation to be on campus so i could work more

Mainly the the fact we got to learn the concepts of things and how they work.

The videos were very informative and helpful for the class.

Everyone hates ppt slides but these were awesome. Good explanation, good examples, and the pictures everywhere really help avoiding getting distracted. It was great to be able to blow through a bunch of lectures that were clear, and then spend that extra time on sections that just weren't clicking in my head.

coding using JGrasp and Eclipse was a hoot and very fun.

I liked that Professor Albritton was very animated and lively. He is easy to approach and talk to, should you have any questions.

The ability to email him at anytime with questions.

giving assignments on weekly basis so we can practice programming

I like the set up of the class. Professor Albritton divides the class hours into two sections, first part is discussion and second part is hands on. The immediate hands on helps me apply all the things we learned in the discussion.

The professor is very considerate and wants his students to succeeds.

Always getting help in class whenever i needed it. Also he didnt just give us the answer he made sure we could figure it out on our own.

19. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

Although they weren't major assignments, I didn't like have so many due. Two a week was a bit much for me considering I had work.

Not much explaination on how to go about coding, or atleast I found it hard to translate the concept to the coding.

I wish I would have taken it in person, the teacher seems to really know his stuff.

There were a few times where it seemed some programming method that we'd need wasn't covered in the lecture.

I did not like that we were expected to complete 2-3 programming assignments a week. In comparison to other ICS courses because programs take some time to construct, debug, etc. we were expected to complete programs once a week. Also, the lectures and powerpoints go hand in hand, they did not provide as much information that was needed to complete the assignment.

How heavy loaded some of the assignments were. Too much to do in a small assignment

the way he teaches

I enjoyed the course very much.

I kind of didnt like how he would get lost in some of the programs.

Probably should have spent a little more time coding the given coding used such as nodes/linked lists etc which are just implemented.

i like the assignment of the teacher given, its very organized and the our laulima site of this class is very unique.

I didn't like having two assignments due every week. It would've been nice, like a refresher, to have just one due every now and then.

Take the on campus class. Avoid the online class. He is a good teacher in class but online not so much.

More example codes and how they function.

Maybe more example code?

Take a look at the curriculum coverage of the GUI and Applet vs Application methods. Especially Layouts. See if there's any gaps that could be covered in the lectures.

The powerpoints and lectures should focus more on the assignments. Less programs in a week, or break the programs into sections.

Less work-heavy assignments.

I think if he went indepth more into some of the programs. Also if he could explain how these programs can be used more with each other.

Instead of just taking code and using it, maybe code more of the whole program.

Overall, Professor Albritton is a good professor, easy to talk to, outgoing, etc. The structure of the course could use some readjustment.

I would highly recommend Professor Albritton to other students whose planning to take the course.

The slide show that he presents in class is very helpful, clear and objective. If we have any questions about it, we can access the content through Laulima at anytime.

Everything was interesting and I absolutely loved this course. I would take it again just because it was so much fun, the professor is a wonderful teacher.

Being able to create a web page from scratch

I like everything we did in this course. I learned a lot with the html and css coding. I also like how I got to express my creativity in class while working on the final project.

I liked how we got to learn on how to make a html files, and learn the different codes.

I liked that I was able to apply and use the system after he taught it.

19. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

Using only the templates from the course made me a little bit confused when I try to create a webpage on my own for fun at home.

20. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.

-Start at least one assignment from zero, not using templates would probably make us understand the steps and functions more clear since this is the lowest beginners class. -Using other students assignments and projects as example is always a motivation and inspiration since we are all in the same boat.

Maybe just a little more time for the final project, however I prefer working alone, not in groups.

William Arbritton makes us feel comfortable and welcome! That helps a lot when we have questions and need help. Not to mention that he is really dedicate in replying to our emails ASAP which for me shows professionalism.

This course has taught me so much valuable information. I remember when IK first entered the class and was terrified for html code, it looked so complicated, but come to find out it was not hard at all. The professor is one of my favorite professors yet!! Keep doing what you are doing.

I like how we do the assignments in class. It trains us on the subject we just learn and at the same Professor Albritton is so helpful.

Albritton has a very dynamic teaching style, I really enjoyed the class as a whole.

I loved finding the information very useful for real life situations!!

He provide examples and teach us through (very helpful) power point presentation which is also on Laulima so we can access it again.

We always have a fun time in class.

Resources The power point was very useful. The atmosphere was focused but unthreatening (not intimidating).

Easy to understand

His power points were very clear cut, and easy to follow whenever I missed a class. Everything was very straight forward, there were no gray areas or difficult concepts. This was a very cool class.

I enjoyed doing the daily assignments/projects. They really helped me to understand and remember the material covered in class.

The technology in the classroom was top notch. The projector screen with high res was absolute to the knowledge of the class. Mr. Albritton has a great sense of humor and he adds excitement to the class.

I really appreciate the structure of the assignments. Creating a lesson plan in which all new topics are explained and applied without the need of hw or programs outside of the class time is very helpful. The somewhat rigid design isnt ideal for most, but it's roots in discipline and efficiency keep me motivated and allowed me to do much better in this class than others.

learning about the positioning of the contents on the page, text aligning was straight forward, as was the border and table and padding stuff. but when it came to positioning all elements, like iframes and videos etc. that got very confusing.

It would be nice if the positioning power point was a little more spread out, its kind of a lot, or I could just have trouble grasping it. it could just be me. Its a convoluted portion.

The course was great, I learned an amazing amount, I always thought coding was rocket science, but just like assembling a gaming pc, step by step, its really not that crazy. And Mr. Albritton was very easy to interact with, and very eager to help students, he never got frustrated with repetitive questions and was always willing to explain something twice. An excellent professor.

Thank you Mr. Albritton for your great attitude and knowledge of the HTML coding world. I appreciate your wealth of information and I enjoyed the projects with adding my own creativity. Go Bama!!

I like the fact that we had plenty of "on hands" time to do our assignments.

i liked the powerpoints and how he walks everyone through the database tools and how to use them.

William is an awesome instructor that is always willing to provide assistence to us. He maximizes class time with lectures and assignments while allowing time to do work towards the end of the class to secure a thorough knowledge before leaving class.

I felt that Mr. Albritton scored the assignments in a timely manner. This allowed one to ask for the correct solution or to clarify the mistake.

William is very easy to get along with. He showed the concepts and answers to lessons in a clear and easily understood manner.

The best aspects of this class was the fact that Prof Albritton is so willing to help out anyone in the class that just asked for it! Not to mention he give feed back on the assignments and shows what was wrong and how it could be fixed.

It was a pretty chill class.

I like the group project, where we are able to apply our collective knowledge we learned from Professor Albritton to make a working data that will result in a benefit for one of group members career in managing network PCs.

I liked that we had time in class to work on our assignments. This allowed us have our questions immediately answered by the instructor.

The fact that we worked with databases is what I liked best because this is something I want to go into in the future.

I like that it is very clear what is due when and that there are links to related materials right next to the assignment.

Professor Albritton's excellent organizaion. The entire course was very well organized and easy to follow. Professor Albritton should definetely be a model to follow by other professors.

I like that we had 2 short assignments (as opposed to one big one) each week, and that they came with example programs that we could use as guides. Also, the extra credit opportunities are very nice to have.

Lectures need to be updated - many were difficult to follow and understand. There is no doubt that the instructor knows the material. I found that some of the explanations were very vague.

Some of the assignment weren't that clear that it was hard to write some of the codes for parts of the assignment. The podcast lecture didn't help for some of the assignment.

More smaller assignments possibly to get a better understanding of specific parts of code before coding the assignments we did.

I can not think on anything to change because I really think the course is very well organize, and Professor Albritton makes the class very interesting.

Some more example programs might be helpful. Otherwise, this was an awesome online course!

Not have it be a long distance class.

Shorten the lectures. Clarify concepts better. There is a lot of skipping from one thing to the next and back again. It's also difficult to follow the lecture when he refers to a document that you need to download and have open during the lecture. If you haven't printed the document and must look at it online, you'll need to scroll and jump from one window to the next. In the meantime, you're missing what he's pointing to because you're looking elsewhere trying to figure out what part of the document he's talking about. Then you need to stop and/or rewind the lecture until you figure out where he is. That was particularly frustrating.

Interesting programs

I learned a lot of how to perform course material from the PowerPoints. 95% of the time I walked away from class more confused during than I was after I reread the powerpoints. I like the ability to access the professor through google chat via gmail. He spoke in very high level terminology during class from words that were first time presented in last class. He has to realize his students may have never accessed a computer or never programmed before either.

Plenty of time in class to do homework.

The freedom to code in my own fashion without having to write programs to match an instructor's preconceived notion of how it should be done.

What we learned in class was only a fraction of the homework

C++. was not that cool. But the dereferenceing with parenthesis was a doozy! Needed more in depth explaination of what this was and how it worked down to how the cpu presents the information and better and more graphical representation of whats happening during program execution.

The instructor and the amount of time given to complete assignments. One day to complete a program, in a language you are new to, is not feasible. It gives you no time to work through problems or seek help.

I would like to have seen more examples of how to use certain topics. I realize that giving an example similiar to the assignment would not challenge a student to learn the topic, but it seemed as though alot of the assignments were nothing like the examples given in the lecture.

Outdated methods, why use EMACS? Twenty minutes of class would be spent on lecture, the rest of the class was used to do the homework. Class time could have been used more effectively.

Not enough depth or breadth to the course, and could use more instruction and better explanations for the sections covered (but without increasing the time spent on each section).

The amount of homework given and when it was due. Some of the students work shift work. 12 hour shifts four days on four days off. It became difficult to do homework when our string of work began on a Monday, because we had work at 545am left for school came back to work and left to go home at 545pm. So we would have to rush to do homework that night and finish it before going to bed, to get ready for another 12 hour shift at work the next day.

Very little time to turn assignments in.

That we had a new assignment every class. I felt as if students were rushed to finish assignments causing stress. It seems that this course takes a toll on time when it comes to thinking about what to write in code. With a little more time on homework assignments, I feel each student will be able to progress more.

The instructor could be more organized. He could also base the homework off of what we learned.

Dumb down the verbal explaination of how the material works. Teach at a lower level while maintaining the level of content taught.

I feel the instructor was not completely prepared to teach the course. He has not taught it in several years and it was obvious. I also would have liked the instructor to remember questions he was unable to answer in class and email or give the correct answer the next class period. I also felt the instructor wasn't able to gauge how the class was feeling on a subject. I know you cannot stop if one student is lost, but if majority is, a new approach should be taken. I also wasn't fond of the teaching style the instructor has, I felt as if he was not fully prepared or just wan't able to convey his thoughts appropriately and clearly.

Please show more examples of the programming structures being used.

More efficient time usage.

Power points need to be redone to be more informative. Would have considered reading in a file and outputting a file to be essential coding practice for a class like this. Covered makefiles exhaustively, so it would have been nice to code programs that take multiple inputs to compile in order to make the makefile have more meaning.

I enjoyed this class when I understood it.

The professor was awesome. But just too smart but not a teacher. He is definitely a professor not a teacher. His ability to teach very new and intricate topics like arrays of arrays simutaneously introducing strings was extremely difficult to grasp and the Dereferencing was extremely new to me. Even the word itself was new. I looked it up in the dictionary to get a clear udnerstanding of what the word meant and in reference to C programming.

Overall it was a great class.

I was lost from week 3. I was so lost I didn't even know what questions to ask. :( I understand that Mr. Albritton hasn't taught this class in a while, hopefully the next go around will be a lot better.

Assignments were given lengthly due dates. Chat room to speak with fellow students.

Thw assignments were challenging and gave us a good understanding of how to write the programs and were very useful, he was also good at grading on time and giving feedback.

The aspects of the course that I liked were how some assignments had real life applications. I also liked how course material was presented in the "inch by inch it's a cinch" manner where although the material was challenging, it was not too overwhelming as material was presented at a good pace where each class built upon the last.

I feel example coding was not helpful sometimes. Asking to do tasks we may have no background in without adequate examples was troublesome.

It was difficult to contact the professor to ask for help. Most of the time, it was faster getting helps from classmates and other online resources available.

I wish this course was offered in class. It is sometimes difficult to grasp the concepts of the class without teacher student interaction.

The relative inaccessibility to students and the teacher immediately, due to it being an online course, was a challenge at times.

I know we're in college, but having two assignments in one week was a bit much for me. At some points I didn't understand the lesson and had to figure out the homework one after another.

The video lectures were filled with worthless information that often deviated into unrelated concepts. There is nothing wrong with infusing a little bit of humor into a subject, but when the humor isn't funny or just plain boring, cut it out!

The homeworks were the only practice we recieved and if we didnt understand it, we would need to backtrack a little.

Although Professor Albritton did explain each lesson well, there were times where I was still confused because I felt he didn't really help explain how to do the homework. I guess I just needed him to be a little more thorough. Programming is not easy

Redo the video lectures so they don't sound like programming for 2-year-olds. The instructor would often speak like the people watching had never taken any programming courses before.

Maybe add optional assignments so help further the students learning pattern without grading them.

The text book web-site is not very beneficial to students.

Whenever I had a question, Professor Albritton always responded quickly and answered my questions well.

He was a great instructor and responded promptly whenever there was any questions about the material. The material was spaced out which is great due to other classes i was taking.

I think it should have been stated more clearly before that the due date for everything was to be set well before the end of the semester date but besides that I think he did well with replying to emails and helping us when we asked for it.

I enjoyed the excel and powerpoint training exercises.

I liked how i was able to retake a quiz 3 times which helped my grade and also helped me learn and understand the material.

I enjoyed working with the powerpoint assignment that we had to do.

The aspect of the course that I liked the best was the review assignments because we got credit for them and it also helped us prepare for the test and exams.

Self paced is best for me. My work schedule is random at times and it fits best.

The assignments/required tasks were very organized. I always knew what exactly was expected of me and when I should have it done by.

The tests of course! The class was great. I have no complaints.

The part of the course that I liked the least was the myitlab sections of the powerpoints and excel because they were really hard and there was nothing really there to help us with it.

Wished for more in depth coverage of program capabilities.

The MyITLab program was very difficult to work with. I feel that the program itself is a horrible teaching aid, having the student become frustrated and not knowing what the program wants you to do rather than teaching you anything.

Honestly the course was really planned quite. If i didnt get the answer right on the practice test there would be a hint box which directed me in the right way for the answer.

Ocassionally I had problems with the online site that we had to use for our microsoft homework. The site did not work with my mac and kept feezing up on my pc. My pc is fairly new so I believe that it was the website.

The course could be improved in a couple of ways. The first being having a better course study guide when completing the microsoft word, excel, and power points assignments. This way students will not have such a tough time teaching themselves a computer class online.

Get rid of MyITLab.

I liked how each module we learned something new on creating web pages. The course was easy to follow and learn.

The fast pace and HTML base.

In DMED120 the careful yet deliberate pace of the instruction promoted understanding and successful implementation of the material.

It was great that I could take a class on-line since I work full-time. In the beginning I was worried about not being able to follow along with the instructions since I wouldn't be able to immediately ask a question. The class on cable was very well put together I was able to follow along and understand what was going on. The on-line material like the examples, podcast, and slides were a great help. Hopefully more on-line or eveing classes will be available. It was a great class that I enjoyed taking.

Because of non availability of face to face class, I had to take the course online. Perhaps due to my age and retention abilities (or lack thereof), I might have done better in a 'real-time' classroom.

Although the tests were open book, it was challenging... as mentioned in the beginning of class. For me, it was challenging towards the end to do the Tuesday class due on Wednesday since I'm not able to watch the class and work on the assignment until the evening.

I learned how to problem-solve better, even outside of class. That surprised me.

a ton of assignments, but there is no way you can get through this class unless you understand what is going on. mr. albritton's lectures and slides are well done and if you're willing to put in the work, you will understand the material.

I feel that I've gained a few good programming habits that I've picked up along the way to where I am now in my school career. For me personally, programming has always been a challenging subject, but with the proper guidance something as tough as programming can be learned.

With the amount of coursework we received (moreso the amount of days when assignments were assigned), I believe I'll be able to benefit in regards to time management.

Learning how to code java will help me understand how programming works. I think I want to become more of an animator/videogame designer than a programmer now. But now understand the 'other side' if I ever decide to make video game. Games to me were never about just graphics, story, etc. But the unity to put everything together seamlessly. Like how movies are made.

Practically everything was good.

convenience of taking it on cable/online and not having to go to LCC at any time

I especially liked it when he drew out the concepts and objects in memory, that made it much easier to understand difficult concepts like recursion and linked lists. Those lectures were probably my favorite. They went beyond the textbook explanation. I definitely want to save all the class slides for future reference.

i learned a lot, probably more in this class than i have in any other programming class i took. the podcasts made it great for students like me who work fulltime and can't attend a class at the campus.

Even though they were an effective learning tool, it was a bit difficult keeping up with the assignments because there were so many.

I felt that the exams were too much based on tricks. I believe that I have a thorough understanding of the material but I did relatively bad on the exams. Many of the exam questions were not specific enough, which is something that is necessary for multiple choice questions.

Personal communication with the Professor was unfortunately lacking. And the fact that there were two assignments a week seemed a little over-the-top. I would much rather prefer harder assignments given maybe once a week (or even better, once every two weeks).

I got to stay home to do my assignments. You can only enjoy of being home for so long before getting bored and insane. =P The pacing of assignments just seemed...rushed. I guess when its an online class the pace is much faster than in class person-to-person.

Maybe we could utilize more of the in-class discussion part of this course? I think that would be a little beneficial.

I liked the organization of this class. It was laid out what is due and when it was due.

Nothing really.

Microsoft word, because at times there will be complication. But all in all everything was easy if you know what your doing.

I hate myitlab. Half the time I could not access the course content due to technical issues. The isntyructor informed us that we would prob ably not be able to do the Power Point lessons at home due to unforseen technical limitations. What kind of stuff is that to give to students in the middle of a course of instruction? Pearson is full of it when it claims to provide support to help students. The software is flawed, the self help links are a joke and service is poor overall. They only way I was able to get help is by phone and the hours of available assistance conflicts with Hawaii time to be of any use to students. I had to call between 3 am and 3 pm. Since I work, this was not good for me. I will say their agents are nice and one or two of them are even smart. However the time of help availability to Hawaii is poor and their self help links are not user friendly.

This is the first time I took an online class. I still prefer the classroom set-up because of the interaction with my classmates and instructor that is missing in an online class.

Some of the things that helped me learn in this class, is watching him type up the codes and doing them myself in class. Although sometimes, the material was outside of my reach.

How to write programs using Java and understanding algorithms.

Simple explanations and examples of computer science jargon. Albritton uses real-life analogies (though everything is related to Japanese culture) during lectures to give an alternative way of thinking.

One of the things that helped me to learn the most were all of the examples that we went through in class. It also helped to have them available online so that we could refer back to actual code while working on the homework assignments.

This class was what I expected from an introductory computer science course.

This course is slightly hard for those not too strong with the syntax and programming. However, with some review and more practices writing program, I believe anyone can understand data structures.

This is a very interesting class, you learn the coding structure, and how to create and to combine different classes.

the homework, only have one day to do it was sometimes very difficult, plus getting answers via email was difficult

Sometimes the class seemed confused, but no one said anything. The room was too cold. The computer was too slow.

Interesting, but the lab should be required, and it needs a TA who is willing to meet with students by appointment, not just lab.

Informative, sort of fun, but if I didn't have to take it, I probably wouldn't have.

Good, alothugh java isn't what I really what I wanted to learn, I feel I can learn from the principles of it and apply it to other languages.

great introductory course for an ics major! i would recommend this course for others that are detailed, have an obsession for structure, and appreciate seeing data handled and manipulated in different ways.
