The content of the material.
I liked Professor's enthusiasm during lectures.

What I liked best about the course is how Jeff would explain the content in a way that all students could understand.
The presence of prof. Tripp and the way he captures people's attention was the reason why every topic of discussion was clear and concise on why we should be aware of it and have an opinion on it. The goal of this class I believe is to take a stand and question everything and not settle. The ways he presents the class lets me speak about political issues which I never felt so strongly about.
The relevancy towards current events.
What I liked best about this course is how the lessons were all connected to each other. No lesson or chapter seemed out of place to everything else we were learning. Also, all lectures were organized, kept me interested, and I also loved how Professor Tripp always included some current events and how it ties into what we are learning.
He communicated effectively

12. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
He's doing fine.
As he has said in class he wants to upgrade with the technology(wireless microphone) but as for teaching; Professor has nothing in my personal preference to improve on.
Offer up more unbiased information. Let the students come to their own conclusion and offer facts from all sides.
I feel that Jeff should make a system where the grading for all TAs are consistent.
I'd suggest he can discuss the assigned readings during lecture to further the understanding of it. To be better prepared for Friday facilitation or to just emphasize the importance of what the readings can better open our awareness of the topic
Nothing. He does a great job communicating the lessons and content in an easily digestible manner.
I honestly enjoyed this course and how the lectures played out. Professor Tripp always came in with a positive attitude and he made jokes here and there which kept the students interested. One thing would be the microphone, but that's not really his fault.

That he is a nice guy.
the only history teacher that I have had that shows his interest of the subject
that he is an excellent instructor and I would definitely recommend this class to other people who are interested in American Studies.
A great professor who I may be a senior in the kinesiology dept and graduating next spring but I'm really considering ethnic/American studies and maybe even political science to further my education.
Great professor! Down-to-earth and very knowledgeable on the content taught in class.
I really enjoy his teaching and how he puts in his personality into his teaching. His lectures are never bland and one wave length. I loved how he incorporated personal experiences and stories into his lessons. I would definitely recommend him to other students who want to take AMST 150.

The material.
I found the information presented interesting along with the videos he used.
I liked the lectures. It allowed for critical thinking and seeing how the USA interacts with the world.
I liked how we are encouraged to get involved and do discussion classes. I also like how this class is focused on opinions instead of factual information that is learned.
The lectures but mostly the facilitated discussions on Fridays. I feel if it were a different ta other than Jon I wouldn't know if I were to enjoy and be intrigued by it as much as I am at the end of this semester
Learning of America's history and how the information differed dramatically from the content taught in high school.
The aspects that I liked best about this course was how our last lesson of the class cycled us back to our first lesson. I learned a lot through the lectures and it gave me a better picture on how America makes decisions and everything between the lines.

The amount of reading
I am not a fan of discussing history so the discussion days were awkward for me.
I did not like how the course was biased towards a single way of thinking. It seemed like it didn't offer the whole story.
I dislike how exams are heavily based on the readings and not the content that is learned during lecture.
Not much to not like. I Would rather have more assignments for more opportunities to bring my grade up
Reading the books. I'm not a fan of reading books...
The aspect of the course I liked least was how some of the slides on the lecture powerpoint had a lot of words and content to it. It was sometimes a struggle to grasp onto everything with the pace he was moving on as well.

if you like history then take it. If it is just a requirement then I'm sure you can find something else.
this course covers a lot of information in great detail. I would recommend this course for those who enjoy learning about historical events and discussing your opinions.
It's a well rounded course. His methods in teaching is amazing and the grading system is more than acceptable

Although I do not enjoy history related classes, this course was interesting and I enjoyed the class because Jeff emphasizes that this course is more opinionated than based on facts from historical events.
Definitely will recommend this class.

I like how the course outlines certain aspects of history that a traditional history class might not go over.
I liked how Jeffrey Tripp used current events to relate to what we were learning about. For example, ISIS invading Baghdad and how the Europeans invaded America.

Though it was many years of topics to understand, Jeff was able to give us the bare necessities that we needed to learn. Even with the minimal info, we learned enough to have a good idea of each concept.

Jeffrey Tripp is a very good professor and it would have been better if i could hear him better so maybe a better mic or a room with more echo. I

I liked Professor Tripp. I think most students tended to tune out during his lectures however. Which is normal because it is a lecture so I don't have much to say.
If key sections of the lengthy readings could be assigned, that would be very helpful in a fast-paced course.

It was a requirement of the Nursing program. AMST 151 seemed like the most fun of the options I was provided with.

The lectures were a real joy to sit in. All information about assignments were made very clear like when it was due and what the assignment is. The videos he showed that were on topics happening now/happened recently were a nice touch.
I liked that we spent a good amount of time on the Vietnam War since my high school teachers would just skim through it.
Learning everything about the US and it's relationship with the world and how exactly we got to where we are today.
I liked the content and the topics that are involved in the course. I also liked how knowledgeable the professor was on the topics, and how much America's past is linked with present America and how he helps us realize that relationship. Overall, I learned alot about the American empire and their role in world relations, I didn't even know there was one to begin with coming into the class.
Focus on viewing history critically rather than memorization of tedious names and dates.
I liked the topics we covered. This class helped me improve my critical thinking and writing skills. I enjoyed the different media (videos, news, documentaries, pictures) that Professor Tripp used during the lectures
Learning about past wars, and especially the present. It was very interesting and it had me sticking to that topic for a while.
12. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Some of the readings weren't that great, they were related to the topics from the lecture but maybe you could try and find new/ different ones.
I think Professor Tripp is doing a great job already.
By getting a new microphone.
Have better mic equipment.
He should buy another microphone. That is it, overall, he is a great instructor. He really wants all his students to pass.

It covered one of the general education requirements I needed and I also wanted to learn more about the subject.
I took it because of the subject, but upon taking the course I would've taken it because of the instructor also.

It fulfilled a FGB requirement but I thought it was a pretty interesting approach to teaching American Studies
At first it was for a requirement, but now I think that this class is very important to take no matter what. I would take this class again for the credit.

Writing assignments were spaced out nicely. Books, for the most part, were enjoyable to read.
I liked it once we reached World War I because I like learning about war.
I liked everything about the course. If I had to choose one it would be the first topic we covered on how the Europeans migrated to the New World and how they dealt with the natives. I had no idea about how poorly the natives were treated and it was very interesting to learn about that.

I liked the different media Professor used to keep us updated with current events and kept us engaged

I did not like reading the American Holocaust. I think there are shorter books that talk about the destruction of Native Americans.

11. What did you like best about the course?
The course is engaging, interesting, and always stays relevant to daily topics. The essays were difficult, but always made me think about the prompts in depth. Overall the course made me rethink my views on America, and to understand the historical importance of US policies.
I enjoyed how engaging this course is in terms of its approach towards American and world events students have been acquainted with.
I liked how the subjects and issues discussed were related to current events. There was a lot of opportunity to discuss the significance of an issue from the past (such as colonialism) and how it has effected us as americans as well as the world at large. I found most all material covered to be relevant to contemporary issues.
What I liked best about the course was that it provided a good basis of understanding on the history of the Americas over the course of 500 years and those implications on today's national and international current events. It helped me answer the question "Is America an empire?" and it gave me the information and details that could help formulate my own opinion to answer the question.
Professor Tripp explained things really well, and I feel like even though it seemed rushed since there was so much material, I still learned a lot about the overall picture.
I like how he encouraged the class to connect the past with the present. To show that we are still making the same mistakes; that we made in the past.

I like how it wasn't just Professor Tripp just lecturing but involving students into his lecture and presentations. There wasn't a single presentation that I felt was unnecessary or boring at all and he really did made me convinced to major in American Studies.
Its not like a regular lecture class but it was still pretty great.
12. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Although there is not enough time in the semester to fully cover every topic possible, I feel that the first few weeks of the semester were too intense. The amount of reading seemed a little too much to keep up with, and many times people simply would be unable to discuss in class because they did not read the material.
Professor Tripp was engaging and was very knowledgeable about this course. He did his best in covering mass amounts of information within limited time.
A specific outline (either in the syllabus or in the lecture powerpoints) of the events and eras we cover in the course would be helpful in giving us the full picture. The syllabus divides the material into issues and themes, but quantifying the concrete events would help bring clarity.
Professor Tripp should provide more in-depth information on his slides in case students miss anything he said in the lecture. This is so that students can look back later and add on whatever they missed on a certain topic in lecture.
Some of the readings are incredibly long and the amount of times we are expected to read them is tough. Maybe shorter readings? Students have other priorities and responsibilities outside of your course. While the readings were beneficial to the course, it causes students to be discouraged from reading in the future.

There were some presentations such as the one about the climate change that felt a little repetitive but other than that, I was very satisfied with the class overall.

Professor Tripp was always enthusiastic and energetic about the topics being discussed, and always did a wonderful job of tying the past with the present. Furthermore, he managed to give very useful historical context to allow his students to better understand the significance of American policies, actions, and other engagements.

The tying of history along with the modern day, and how well the course dived deeper into already well known topics. The course always attempted to go deep into each topic it discussed, rather than just telling students the basics.
This course helped students become more open-minded towards American and world issues.
Discussion days, we were able to interact more with the material (although the lectures were very successful in preparing me for the discussions).

11. What did you like best about the course?
I like that it is designed for us to do something we are interested in considering that we have to write a 20 page paper next semester. I liked the individual conferences about our research because I do not like sharing my progress or struggle in front of the whole class every time and these individual meetings give a lot of good feedback. I also like how that are assignment was broken up into segments so we don't procastinate. It was also easier for us to understand what we are supposed to do when the course description says to come up with a research proposal. If not for the smaller assignments I would have no idea what a good research proposal consists of.
The conversations at the beginning of the semester. Self-directed research and finding what we feel is interesting.
I like that we are held accountable for our own assignments and our own research and we are left to be very independent, yet we still are able to learn a lot about the research process and our own projects.

I like the freedom. Most college courses (and courses leading up to College) are all geared off of curriculum. It is very refreshing to have a course that is predominately self-controlled. I was able to lead my own research while having support and feedback easily and readily available.
Plenty of individual time and one on one meetings with Prof. Tripp to accomplish the required work. Prof. Tripp is so calm and relaxed creating a pleasant work and class environment.

I liked being able to share the research process with other students. Individual meetings with the professor were helpful and kept me on track. Along with that, having assignments due throughout the semester leading up to a final research proposal helps spread out the work to ensure that each component of research is worked on sufficiently.
12. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Pass out examples of previous research proposals by other students (I know that this is the first time he is teaching this course, but maybe other professors can lend him a few copies if there are any). Having some examples, good or not, would be nice. Even for next semester, some examples of the research paper done by other students.

I honestly am unsure how. The class was/is one of the best I've ever taken. I feel very prepared for the second portion.
Cut the assignments at the beginning that highlight the aspects of a research paper because we learn that in 381/382 and that time can be better used for research.

I think more frequent one-on-one meetings with the professor would provide more guidance for students. The assignments that were spaced out throughout the semester made it easy to make steady progress throughout the course, which is important when doing a more complex research project. Like I stated earlier, individual meetings were supremely helpful. I also appreciate that assignments were graded in a very timely fashion, and that they were available on laulima's grade book for students to keep track of their grades in class. As a student, I really appreciate that.

My particular research project was peculiar in the traditional sense for library records. Hamilton's library resources were scarce in helping further my project. But that was fine.
The reading assignments at the beginning did not help and canceling class instead of just scheduling library time would have forced my classmates and me to actually work on the project.

The only problem I had was the process of evaluation between the students and the presenters during our lecture presentations. It should not be an option to the presenter to learn the names of the people evaluating them. In my personal experience, I honestly evaluated someone (who struggled during their presentation) and they took out their frustration with me on my evaluation. My presentation was fairly clear, and yet they claimed that I was unclear. They also in appropriately mentioned my flaws repeatedly. The average scores on all of my other evaluations was a 19/20, with few 20's, one 18, and one 16, yet this person gave me a 11.5. I know who this person was because the comments made in class and the comments on the paper were the same. Please do not let people ask other people to write their names on evaluations because it causes this type of issue.

Professor Jeffrey Tripp is an amazing teacher. This is the second time I have taken him and this class was even better than the first. It was better because the class size was smaller (1st class: about 40 students and 2nd class: about 20 students). Since the class was smaller I was able to get closer with the professor. The lectures were not boring at all and we were given plenty of opportunities to speak our opinions of the subject. Through small discussions, debates, and presentations I was able to do some critical thinking with my peers and get some speech practice. I love Professor Jeffrey Tripps classes. PLEASE COME BACK TO UHWO!!!

I took this course because I needed a lower division elective and I had entertained the idea of dropping this class earlier in the semester, but I am glad that I did not because Dr. Tripp is an excellent instructor and his class is very entertaining as well as informative. Prof Tripp is engaged and "comfortable" with his class. He relates well to the students and created a thoughtful environment to explore some less than savory aspects of American History (without any political bias). Hope to see him tenured (if he isn't already) and expand the class to two semesters to enable a more thorough examination of the issues. TA Jesi Bennett did a very good job leading the facilitating discussions on Fridays, reinforcing/supplementing the material. I also appreciated her unique perspective from her background in native / indigenous cultures in Oceania.
He is approachable, and personable. He has a thorough knowledge of the material he presents.
Professor Tripp was an amazing teacher. He was very informative and worked hard to keep the class engaged in the content. I also appreciate that he jokes around in class; it makes class more fun and enjoyable to attend. I would definitely recommend others to take this course from Professor Tripp!

I liked how the labs were smaller groups and reinforced what we were learning in class.
Migration.
Learning and studying events that had previously only been given a "sanitized" treatment from established conventional history books approved by some Texas Textbook Committee. Getting other prospectives from the "victims" or minorities involved was most illuminating. Having smaller section discussion groups were helpful in facilitating student interaction
I liked the variety of material we covered, including the texts we read (Maus, American Holocaust, Interesting Narrative of the Life of Equiano).
I liked that Professor Tripp tried to keep us engaged in the material. I especially liked the videos he showed us and some of the class discussions. They helped to keep the class focused on the topic of discussion.
Although it's hard to pick just one aspect of the course, I would say collaborating in groups to arrive at a conclusion based off a topic that required deep thought.
The group project was fun.
Group projects on Friday lab with Jesi were a great chance to engage the material comfortably and learn somethings outside the text.

I didn't like how the ppts didn't include the main points so I didn't know what to take notes on.

The room is ridiculously freezing. A very poor learning environment.
The only thing I dislike is that there were a lot of readings to do, but I understand that that is just a part of college and something I have to get used to.

Although I was not engrossed in the material at all times, I really did find this course interesting and enjoyed it greatly. I am leaving this course with a lot of new knowledge and the ability to look at events more critically. I would definitely recommend it to others.
I took this course to fulfill one of my GEs and I wished I took it earlier. Professor Tripp did a wonderful job engaging the students to think about the significance of topics brought into his class.

Why does the course feel like a humanities course?
Not to be too nerdy, but given the limited amount of class time to cover such broad topics, if Dr. Tripp added a final slide with links to additional resources for further study it would surely be a benefit to those students who want to explore more. What am I talking about, it would probably not be utilized by many and may not be worth the trouble. . .

Very good teacher, the course was far more interesting that I thought it was going to be. I learned different takes on history that I never learned in high school.

He is a teacher knowledgable about American history, teaching from a perspective that is not normally shared in the classroom. It is good to know both sides of actual events to realize how the US has become an empire and super power of this time. I enjoy his charisma and easily relatable attitude towards students. Professor Tripp always made the effort let us know about his office hours and when the American Studies department had an event. He was always open during class to any questions we might have and tried to lead a little bit of class discussions during class. Professor Tripp kept history interesting by relating it back to us and how it may or may not effect us. That's what I liked best!

I liked the lectures. They were interesting and I didn't feel forced to take notes I was able to focus on what Mr. Tripp was saying and follow along with the pictures on the slides.

I enjoyed talking about indigenous peoples of America and the history of colonization. Much of that is rarely touched upon in most academic settings, which is unfortunate. I enjoy how each topic is related to a world view and world relations. I enjoy that history can be tied in with current events which both reflect common trends and ideology.
I really liked our friday discussions because it helped me a lot to go over what we had done in class. I liked the information that we learned.

Remembering to sign in for attendance. For some reason I would forget a lot!
The only aspects I did not enjoy was that our class is only 50 minutes so at times we have to go quickly and briefly through lecture material, of which I would need to go over a few times more myself.
There was not anything that i particularly did not like. It was all pretty engaging and interesting.

The discussion session (Friday class). Sometimes I think TA should encourage students to participate more in class. About the class attendance, sometimes TA used the assignments (four assignments) handed in in class instead of using class attendant check-list. Some students came to class but didn't not hand in their homework on that day. I think they are in different parts: class attendance and assignment.

Some of the discussion sections were boring compared to lecture and it would have been nice to see more debates and talks.
His tone of voice get monotone sometimes (not always!), and hes VERY quite, so it hard to hear him sometimes, and the fact that hes so quite makes me loose my attention because i hate having to work so hard to listen.
I thought that everything was fair game.
Although I enjoyed learning about the war we are involved in with Iraq I am a bit confused to what exactly is going on currently.
I wasn't a fan of Equiano.
I did not have a part of the course that I didn't like. Although, there is a lot of reading to do and it can get overwhelming by the end of the semester.

great AMST course that people should definitely take.
It is not just a history class. It is not just an American studies class. This class is insightful and allows students to think critically about what they think they know. It is good to question what we have been taught in the past to shape what we believe to be true now. I highly recommend this course.
That I enjoyed it and found it interesting and my teacher and assistant were both complimentary to each other. They both did really well at making sure everyone understood everything.

Overall, I did not expect to love this course as much as I did. This course was definitely more than just another history class. We got to learn a vast amount of information about America and its relations around the world. In the beginning, I thought I couldn't find any reference to my major, but learning the different types of philosophies from the past will help me become a better leader and help broaden my view of things.
My personal major is business and Mr. Tripp helped my concentration/major learning about the history of America and as well the business sides to history and companies.
This class definitely taught me how to better approach an argumentative paper, especially one that I was stuck in. It also cleared up events in history that I was unsure or unaware of before.

No Comment, continue teaching with the same teaching style. The stuff we do in class helps me retain most of everything I have learned.
Mr. Tripp exercises a great sense of activities and resources; nothing to be added.
Just allowing individuals to work by themselves if they choose to. The midterm game was probably the coolest game. May another variation of that for the final as well. Book discussions were nice to, maybe discussions like book reviews will help retain important aspect for future test/quizzes.
The presentations that were uploaded to view at home were lacking in content, and rather relied on the lecture given in class. It would be better if there were a better way for someone who missed class to catch up on the lectures.
More videos that catch the interests of students.
The class could incorporate more in class discussions to further the comprehension of the material.
He's an excellent teacher, I don't think he needs any improvements. I was able to be engaged in class through his interesting lectures and the way he organized his course, which made it easy for me to follow and be caught up with everything. Overall, this course was excellent.

I took this class not because I need it for my major but I took it for my Gen. Ed. But I learned a lot in this class especially about what's been happening around since the 1500's.
Knowing our history is important because it enabled me to understand how we got to where we are today. Learning history also helps us learn from our previous mistakes.
Even though I'm not a History major, this class really help me understand why our government does this or why other countries leaders do this and so on. Also, helped me understand economic and political issues in history and today!
I learned a lot about whats going on in the world now.
The knowledge and insight of the history studied in this class allowed me to understand new information of our worlds history and enabled me to process this and understand the importance of implementing them into my own lifes thoughts and decisions.
I am just doing my liberals right now, so this class was required to take. I thought this class was really interesting and history was always my least favorite subject. I looked forward to coming to class because it was so boring and it wasn't always a lecture. The activities were fun and it was nice to get to interact with other students. The books we read were really good and I understood why you chose them for our class, it related.

We do a lot of activities in this class that requires participation. I enjoyed all of the activities because they all very engaging and fun. Also, I learn new things in a different way besides having to listen from lectures.

I don't have anything against him because he's been a great teacher to us. He tries to answer all of our questions to the best of his abilities. He's very nice too! He give's us rewards like chocolates and coffee when we do our work.
We could've discussed the books more. For example, we should talk about how the book is developing so far. Discussing the book for only one day and taking a quiz about each book only once makes me feel like buying the books was only a rip-off because we can just read online summaries to find out the important notes on the book.

Maintain your teaching style as it was very helpful. I enjoyed having activities after lectures as it made things easily understandable. Readings should be a bit more reasonable when it comes to how many pages we must read. If we were to read only small chapters of a book - it would have been better to buy one book and print out those specified chapters so the students don't have to spend a lot of money.

He is a very good teacher. He's lectures are short and straight to the point. He gives a lot of engaging activities. Also, he is very generous in giving extra credit opportunities and accepting works that are emailed to him. He is not only our teacher but our friend too! AWESOME TEACHER! :)
Overall, I recommend Dr. Tripp. He is a perfect professor for a freshmen class. He gave many challenging assignments but despite all of those, he was very approachable and easy to understand. The challenges imposed on this course is no doubt a college level, but everybody in the class was so confident and supportive of each other. This is all due to Dr. Tripp's leadership skill and people skill.
He is one of the best History teachers I've had! He really cares about his students and always answers our questions. His teaching methods are great and very helpful. And he is lenient.

This course was very helpful to me. It helped me understand how things changed over time. How things like wars happens and how a certain event leads to another one. And about the books, I loved reading them. It was a good way to learn new things about history. It worked great for me because I love to read and when I read for this class I don't feel like "I'm reading this book because I have to learn" but it's more of like "I'm reading this book because it's interesting!" I enjoyed every bit of it! :)

All in all, this class was very helpful and fun. Like I said, I learned a lot and I've established great relationship with my classmates. I think one of the things that helped me achieve this is through our class activities. Thank you for everything Dr Tripp. If I have the chance to take this class again, I would definitely do.
Dr. Tripp made my freshman experience really enjoyable. He was strict, but fun at the same time. His sense of humor and formality were balanced. His gracefulness did not, at all, made us forget that he is our professor and he should be respected. In fact, this enabled us to work efficiently and the best of our class time. Everyone was engaged and willing to share their opinions and questions.
Class is never boring! Always energetic and fun! Although we need like 5 reading books to read and have quizzes on them...its not that bad! He takes the best 10 quiz scores and drops the other 2 worst scores.. so you can like bomb a quiz if you didn't read a book! (:

Jeff is an amazing professor because he's flexible in helping us learn his material/topics through subjects we care about. This means we're actually learning how to think critically about everyday/nonacademic things and communicate our ideas to other people. We're not just typing out papers on the books we've read. We never had to stick to a strict discussion schedule for each class period, and he let us talk about whatever we wanted, as long as our conversations were relevant to the course. I also think Jeff made us all comfortable and got to know us, which made asking for help really easy. We were never embarrassed to ask silly questions or admit when we didn't understand something.
He is a great professor who is really easy to not only talk to, but also to relate to.
He is a very congenial person and it helps a lot when trying to encourage class discussions. He in very well informed about current world issues as well.
One of the most amazing professors I have ever had. Encourages his students to learn and participate! He chose text that really connect to students and makes it easy to WANT to read them.
Super intelligent and nice guy. He encourages discussion and questions which is awesome. His experiences in North Korea sound very interesting. 15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I loved the selection of books! The Shock Doctrine, Dismantling the Empire, and Empire of Illusion are really great choices to convey the ideas Jeff wanted us to think about. I didn't really like the Michael Jordan book, but I still thought it was a unique and useful way to learn about globalization. Best assigned readings I've had for any class, for sure. I also enjoyed the weekly discussion questions, as they helped us engage with the readings and incorporate our own interests into the material.

He is a great teacher, and is very knowledgeable. Very helpful, and makes you a better student!
Pretty fair and reasonable online professor. The books and course load was manageable and not overwhelming. Also the required discussion was very informal and didn't put too much pressure to write a "correct" answer rather think critically and then share your opinion.
Challenging discussion and rewarding.
Easy to work with through open discussion. Responsible. Offered valid comments on writing assignments.

The discussions, and the books that were chosen for this course.
The discussion was very open and not too structured. I also liked that the class was split into groups to minimize the overwhelming discussion posts. I also liked the fact that there were no textbooks, just paperbacks that were easily available online or the bookstores.

Remembering to do discussion I kept forgetting with the accelerated reading pace.
Cannot think of any right now.
The topics for the paper were sometimes difficult to defend or support.
