10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
This course illuminated social constructions that are implicit in everyday life. Various "taboo" subjects were discussed to eliminate the power of silence.
Amazing class! Loved it and I spread the word for those who are searching for a good class to fulfill their prereqs or really have no direction. Wish I had the time to put this in as a major but I was unaware of the program (more so I took the class my junior year and rotc doesn't allow switching programs during this year..tsk tsk) enjoyed it though, wish there was forced participation, more quizes...etc. FUN FUN FUn!! Learned a lot as well
I liked how Ms. Matsen made the class feel comfortable and more open. She presented and led the class into an exploration of many issues that I was previously only dimly aware of. This was my favorite class of the semester - so much so that I'm inspired to pursure an undergraduate certificate in Women's Studies. If I could take it again for more credits, I would.
The diversity of feminitsm, and how equal rights make a difference.
I liked how the course forced me to think differently about all kinds of different issues presented in class. I enjoyed all the different video, they were interesting and showed sides of arguments that I didn't see before.
I like how this is an open discussion class on important issues that everyone is dealing with in today's society.
Talking critically about present day issues that greatly affect our lives and how we view things. The content challenged your ways of thinking and opened your eyes to things you would have never noticed other wise. The best part of the course was the guest speakers and video/films we watched. They really bring new perspectives into light because they present people's real life stories and experiences and allow you to see what it is really like.
The course was excellent.
Amy is an amazing teacher!
Being open to e flexable
Interesting topics covered. Challenging to think about.
Class discussion and debates, I wish there were more of them. Breaking the class up into smaller sections was wise, but I think that those sections, rather than the normal class periods, would be best utilized for debates. The show and tells were fun, though time consuming... I kind of wish the class had more time for discussion.
The talk of Hawaiian culture and Americanization of that has shaped my perception of U.S. laws enforced onto the Hawaiians, the differences in family values, and the connection to the land seen in Hawaiians that I have never seen. I loved how Matsen expanded on the encroachment of American mainstream culture on almost every land we have touched then minimizing their histories by ignoring them in public. She showed a lot of passion in redefining feminism and the statistics in almost every lecture opened my eyes!
Everything about the course was great. One of the bests classes I've ever taken. Enjoyed it alot.
I liked that we were able to speak our minds and feel comfortable being able to say what we wanted to say. I also liked the assignments that were assigned and all the concepts we cover over the semester
I loved the atmosphere of the class and that we were all encouraged to realliy think about the issues being presented and to examine ourselves and how we felt about those issues. I also loved that we were all free to express our opinions and discuss the issues freely without feeling like we were going to be judged for out opinions. Amy's teaching style was also superb. I could tell that she was really passionate about the issues she was discussing and I couldn't help but be draw in to what she was saying. She encouraged me to think about the world in a way I hadn't really ever thought about it before and in doing so I learned so much and my view of the world broadened out and I honestly feel like a much better person for it. I really think everyone should take this class before they graduate and I would definately recommend it to anyone.
The guests who came to talk to our class.
Amy Joy taught us so many things that were amazing. I enjoyed the lectures and how everything from the textbook readings to the guest speakers related to us in some way or another. This course empowers me to stand up for myself and live a better life. I want to learn more about the issues that matter most, instead of who is dating who or which celebrates are coming out of the closet issues like who needs help in the world and why. Amy has taught me how to truly become an intelligent woman in our society.
This is my absolute favorite class that I've ever taken so far, being a student here at UH Manoa. The video's, clips, special guest speakers, Amy (the professor), my TA's (Keenan and Mahina), and subjects we covered were very interesting and I can say that I feel even more like an activist now because of this course and I have decided to major in Women's Studies as well.
the video clips, handouts, and guest speakers.
I really enjoyed the topics that were discussed and the main issues that needed to be addressed, that society doesn't not formally get to discuss in the public.
I loved how passionate the instructor was while teaching, it really helped get into the course and become more involved with current issues going on today.
many issues that are unknown or simply overlooked were given new importance. the intructor was very energetic, passionate, and inspirational
I loved the topics that were discussed. I also like that it touched on other issues that society faces today like homophobia, abortion, and domestic violence.
I liked the diverse ways in which we got to learn about the material, like presenters, movies, readings, etc.
All of the different topics covered. The course material applies to everyone.
I really liked the discussions in class and the teacher is very adamant about her opinions. She is an extremely good teacher with strong feminist views and I hope to be more like her.
What is this woman on crack? Love you Amy!
Labs, being in small groups and being able to share your thoughts.
the group discussions and the chance to hear views and ideas from other people
First of all, I liked the professor and the TAs for Lab C. I like the class because I learned a lot about Hawaii.
I learned a lot from this course, I liked everything about this class especially the labs when we would have time to discuss what we went over in class together. The materials such as the movies and presentations we saw had very helpful examples in explaining the current topic.
lab periods
She was so expressive and passionate with everything that she talked about. I loved it.
The best part of the course was as asking critical questions and reflecting on them. We saw all perspectives on a problem and found why they were like that. I liked how the course change the way I looked at situations in life.
The guest speakers, and videos that were presented in class. There was a ample variety in the information presented for the course.
I learned a great deal in this particular class. It was an inspiration and eye-opener in several ways. I liked the films that we watched and the discussions that we had in class. I also liked reading the script to deepen my understanding about the text material.
Our discussions in class. They opened up new ideas to consider.
Everything about this course was very interesting. It was one of the only classes that i looked forward to going to, and it was my FAVORITE! It opened my eyes and made me realized how closed-minded i was.
I loved how passionate my instructor was when she gave lectures and lead class discussions. Some of the course material was very heavy, and there were times when the class was asked to share personal experiences. Whenever this happened, my instructor was very clear that our class was in a safe enviornment, and nothing would be repeated. Our class trusts our instructor and teacher assistants because they have made the class atmosphere a safe place to learn.
There were a lot of videos
I liked the movies we watched.
Lecture and guest presentations, discussions and watching videos. I've learned many different perspective towards various issues that I would never known of.
The classroom discussions and videos.
The way the course was taught. It's great that we actually talk about important issues, breakdown all the myths, and stretch our minds. I liked the way our teacher always encouraged us to think deeper and to never assume that things are always as they seem. I went to every class and left having learned so much. We'd discuss personal and touchy matters and we'd respect eachother's beliefs doing it. What I liked the most was the safe environment where I felt safe to express myself and not be judged for my beliefs. Our teacher wasn't only our instructor, and mentor, but also someone we could count on, someone who genuinely cares about her students. The TAs in Lab C were a great help. They were skilled at conducting discussions, pointing out the main points and making lab fun. There were times we had to talk about hard topics, and they were always there for us too.
The small discussions during class was always interesting.
The diversity of the issues covered; the interactive aspect and use of media to present current issues in Women's Studies as well as LGBT, race, and Hawaiian issues.
Love the teacher, she was very interesting
I like the different topics we covered and the instructor was outspoken.
I liked the discussions we had in Lab. They were inciteful and challenged me to think outside of myself.
The videos: it allowed us to see a different perspective of life and issues we may not be aware of (e.g. sweat shops in U.S. territories). Learning about the commodification of a culture and the land and how it relates to misogyny.
I found all aspects of the course interesting and fun. Learning about feminism during the past and the present really helped me to change my way of thinking and think more critically about the issues surrounding women in our everyday lives.
I liked the fact that this course doesn't just feed you rhetoric to try and sway you to follow their agenda, but they give you real life examples and ultimate truths of reality for you yourself to base your judgement on. The confidence of the course is what appeals to me most because when these truths and examples are looked at from the context of anyone subjected to the global domination of the united states, it becomes obvious that this isn't a way of life and that we must make changes. The content inspires personal revolution to stand up and first, be a human and second, help out your kind by being humane. This course has been a brief overview and has inspired me to get more in depth and continue education in women studies, be it a minor or major.
I really enjoyed everything this was a great class, opened my mind to a lot of new ideas. All of it was incredibly valuable and should be a required course.
This course, even though it is under the women studies, but this course covers a lot of thing about globalization, critical studies, disability, discrimination not only against women, but other races as well
EVERYTHING! Both the Instructor and the course was amazing! It was very interesting and informative.
Which aspect? Does the entire course answer this question?
The guest presentation and class discussion.
The teacher's enthusiasm towards Women's Studies. It's obvious she is passionate in the course and is very approachable to students.
11. Global appraisal: Considering everything how would you rate this COURSE?

12. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
The course was sometimes very randomized with movies. Examinations were difficult because there was little structure or powerpoints to study from. Textbook readings were assumed to be understood and read. Perhaps, in-depth discussion or explanation of textbook concepts would be very helpful.
-- snipped --
It could be made into a lengthier course in terms of time; I feel like I didn't get to learn about anything in-depth aside from the variations of gender.
More labs to help express how we really feel. More guest presentations..
It's fine how it is.
I wish we would break up into small groups during lectures sometimes, ot onyl labs on Fridays.
Some readings could've have been omitted.
The course was great. The course was informative.
Its greaaaaaaat :)

More debates, there are enough controversial topics that people are bound to have different views. Better presentation of the pro-life side of the abortion debate, not all of them are insane... though it is admittedly hard to find one that isn't. Perhaps calling people off on a list for their opinions... not sure. Overall I think that both the instructor and the TA's did just about everything that can be done to increase participation. But I hate to see so many students that don't seem to have an opinion... One of the reasons I like debates is that, with a good devil's advocate, everyone can get involved; unfortunately, it also tends to lead to one versus many, and that kind of struggle can eat up time that might better be used to talk to the many. It's a hard question. I liked the idea of assigned roles given recently, but I can't help but feel that it would have been more... interesting... if people had just been assigned to a position in the debate, and told to defend it. Doing so really takes a knowledge of the arguments, especially if you end up on the side opposite from your own.
Discuss more about the depreciation of women in education and science and how their work has been taken advantage of by male counterparts. Incorporate more analysis of current television shows (i.e. Desperate Housewives, etc.)and their roles in perpetuating the "female" and "male" roles in family and business.
I thought this course was great and it doesn't need any improvements. Just keep doing what you're doing.

This was a very good course and I wouldn't change anything about it. One of the best classes I've ever taken at UH
I think the class is perfect as it is. I learned so much in this class and my overall view of the world has broadened so much since taking this class and there isn't a single thing I would change about it. It's one of the best classes I have ever taken at UH and in my academic career as a whole.
I think the class is great, I wouldn't change anything.
None... I loved the course period. Thank you Amy
I love how Amy teaches with such passion and enthusiasm. She is so animated and has a great orating voice, I enjoy listening to her speak about issues that she possess so much ferber for. She is very concerned and she cares about women's issues; her compassion is contagious. It is because of her that I am going to major in Women's Studies and I am also very excited to be TAing for this course next semester!
I think if there were shorter readings then the class would have read most of them.
more ways of solving issues since theyre so heavy
I think the reading, "Staging Tourism" should be cut out. I didnt understand it at all.
I really don't have any advice to how the course could be improved because I really enjoyed the class.
More time to discuss issues with group, or personal discussion in class or lab
maybe not have so much discussion at the beginning of class because by the time we actually start what we are supposed to do class time is up. maybe set discussions aside strictly for lab time. Maybe not focus so much on gay/lesbian. i think it was taken overboard. i wouldve rather spent more time talking about hawaiian since it was a HAP focus or maybe even abortions.
-- snipped --
It was an amazing class though it did seem a little bit rushed at the end.
more time spent learning about males and getting their input. a neutral attitude needs to be maintained throughout the lectures.
She could focus less on women and how awesome they are even thought they really are and maybe talk more about how guys are awesome too. But not in the way that she did it this semester.
It would have been better if we didn't rush through all the topics.
Bringing in more guest speakers or presenting information from a variety of sources to give both sides of the argument etc. Sometimes I felt like some of the topics, and arguments were bias, and not really the TRUTH etc.
This course could be improved by having more group and hands-on activities. This course could also be improved by having more guest speakers.
It was perfect.
This course could be further improved by having more class participation when discussing the reading material. Less videos shown in class could mean more time listening to presentations and lectures.
-- snipped --
This class could be improved by more group talk during class. The big lecture hardly forced people to talk.
I suggest at least an hour class would be more efficient to this course. So we have time for discussions after every material introduced in class.
no comment.
The readings could be a little shorter, and more time to study for exams would be helpful.
The nature of the course allows for only a survey of key topics, which is understandable and unavoidable, but too little time was spent on key WOMEN'S issues in respect to a Women's Studies course.
I am not sure.
I'd like if it was a smaller class. A lot of people feel more comfortable to speak their mind in a less crowded room. I would have liked to stick to the syllabus a little more.
-- snipped --
I think that the course should be taught in smaller groups like the labs, as opposed to having a large lecture hall. I understand that this requires more teachers and time, but I think it would deliver the content more effectively.
Too many students. More lectures are needed. Too many terms, which sometimes do not really helpful. The most important is how to think critically.
Maybe one or movies less. They were good, just too many.
I loved the course! I wouldn't change a thing...maybe add more classes throughout the week? I'm ok with going 5 times a week! I felt there was so much information to take in during a class period that we were always cut off or I had to leave because I had another class to get to. I loved it no matter how short it felt. Thanks Amy for everything. You changed a lot for me and opened a whole new field to me. Originally I wanted to study anthropology, now I want to combine both by studying gender roles in different cultures. I don't know if I would have realized how much I love the subject matter if it wasn't for you, Amy and the WS department in general. Thanks again for helping me with my documentary project. I really appreciate it.
I loved it just the way it was.

19. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I really liked all the films and documentaries we saw in class. I think they really added to the lectures. I also liked the guest speakers. They were very informative and all of them gave excellent presentations!
Amy's fun to learn from and makes the course exciting. The TA's are awesome too.
I like that Amy was very open with her students. She made me feel comfortable to approach her with any concern, issue, or just to strike up a friendly conversation. She was very down to earth and genuinely showed concern for the well-being of her students
The movies and discussions in the labs after were really helpful and made me understand better.
I really enjoyed having the labs on Friday. It was nice to be able to split into smaller groups to have intimate discussions.
The class is always enjoyable and we learn a lot
lab was my favorite part. it let me talk about the issues presented in class which helps me learn the material MUCH better.
I like how she brings in various speakers because she is humble about the subject she teaches. It's nice to have someone challenge the way I look at things through a different eye.
The movies and presentations from all different types of people.
the interesting material
I liked the various media the instructor used to present each week's lesson such as with videos, readings, and guest lecturers. I also liked that the big lecture class was then broken up into more intimate labs where we were a known face and we got to dis
i liked that we got to speak about our opinions and how we felt with everything we talked about.
The open class environment gave many the ability to express themselves.
I liked the course content and the teacher was very nice and helpful.
the presentations from guest speakers and the videos are all very helpful
I liked how Amy taught us how to look at aspects of life in a different way. The films and speakers she chose were very interesting and I learned a lot from seeing and hearing their stories.
The class was very interesting. I liked how whatever we read in our textbook applied to the video we watched in class, reading and watching gave a deeper understanding to the concept being taught. I also liked the guest speakers, each one was entertaining
I really like all the extra credit opportunities and announcements you give to us, and I love the way the materials I learn are so relevant that they seem to apply to every course I'm taking in addition to women's studies and to my everyday life as well!
I enjoyed the insight provided by the visual media presented in class. I also enjoyed lab and that it provided time for indepth discussion.
I liked all the guest speakers, documentaries, and activities rather than just straight lecture and notes.
the material was thought-provoking and interesting.
The videos, the guest speakers, and the discussions
i thought the class discussions were most pertinent to learning the course materials.
Lab was really helpful, also all the guest speakers and different types of lectures made the class periods go by faster and more effectivly. She was very good at relating the material she taught to real life scenarios.
This was the most interesting course that I have taken. I liked how it touched on various ethnic groups, although it was mostly Hawaiians. Also, I liked how you could express your opinions in class.
guest speakers!!!!!
Everything. I really enjoyed this class. it was my favorite one. I learned the most in this class! I really want to take more women studies classes with amy.. she is a very enthusiastic and smart teacher. I enjoyed everything about this course. it was a

I love the lectures, especially the guest speakers. I also found the labs very useful for confirmation of the new material and the discussions are wonderful!
Made me think about a lot of things that I don't reflect on in daily life. Very eye-opening.
The readings.
The instructor was extremely enjoyable to watch and listen to.
"open-minded" environment, encouragement to speak, media directly related to topic studied, clarity and helpfulness of TA's
The instructors and TAs were very mindful of the students' opinions and questions. They were able to answer our questions as well as propose new ones for further discussion and analysis. The videos were very useful. I really appreciated this cours
the materials we learned through movies and guest lecturers
material and topics were interesting.. it kept me awake
I enjoyed all the guest speakers and films we watched in class.
I really like the in class discussion because I am always interested in what other people (people from different backgrounds, and with different experiments) have to say about the issue.
Class involvement and discussion
The H focus
There were so many, but i really liked how relatable the material was to my life, and really feel that the course was worth while
I liked the atmosphere. It was very open and accepting to all ideas and perspectives. The course presented us with very good perspectives of women and what is going on in the world, and didnt necessarily force us to follow them, but just encouraged us to
I really enjoyed the various films viewed in class and the labs which allowed for a more comfortable environment to discuss issues.
The debate and open conversation.I love to talk, and to be able to actually talk in class for once is nice. The movies are also really interesting. I never have a reason to sleep in this class.
The ideas presented made me think more analytically.
labs, lecture
lectures and guest speakers were great
I liked the content and the discussions. There was plenty of both.
it was an eye opening course that caused me to thing about aspects of my place in the world this a female.
open conversations.
the inclusion of asian/pacific issues, which made the course content easier to relate to. the TA's were really awesome too. for the most part, awesome guest speakers.
emphasis on critical thinking and group discussions

22. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I think it would be a good idea to incorporate the text book and the readings more into class (the instructor could specifically relate them to the films, discuss the chapters and ideas from the text book in class, because I thought the text book was real
Make the information more up to date and relevant towards what's happening now.
Instead of just talking about the issues maybe as a class or in our labs we can actually go out and do some sort of project as a group so as to begin to make a difference in the issues we are becomeing aware of.
I dont know.
Some of the guest speakers and videos were a bit dull.
more group activities.
This class is EXCELLENT!!! I would take it again just for the hell of it!!!!
I feel like having the class only for MWF really shortens the time and descussions. I think if class was a little longer that would make it better.
I wish more than 50 minutes of class time was allotted. There could be more encouragement to take higher level courses (though it is really up to the student if the topic interests them).
Maybe a smaller class size would encourage more students to speak in class. But other than that, it was a great class to be in and i wouldnt change a thing!
Show less movies. Have more stuctured lectures from the course instructor and not guest speakers.
I dont think she needs to imporve anything.
maybe have less readings because I thought alot of the readings were repetitive with the subject matter...also, have more time for discussions and opinion sharing because it always seemed like there was never enough time...
There is a lot of emphisise on Hawaiian oppression. I feel like I am in two Hawaiian studies classes. There should be more emphasis on women around the world, not just the annexation of Hawaii, even though I do understand that we are in Hawaii.
The way the class was formed worked well for me.
I think that the text book was kind of unnecessary. We used it several times, but I think that the information could be easily covered in anther way without spending money on an entire text book. Maybe I'm just lazy, but I think that these things could
The course could be improved if it included guest lecturers that were more applicable to the course. It could also better utilize the textbook, or use an alternative text considering that most of the discussions in class revolve around the online readings
labs seemed to offer a better teaching experience because of the smaller class sizes. the TAs should be more helpful and less distracting.
Nothing really, it was pretty good to me.
instead of watching a few minor films here and there, we could have used the time to discuss the topics we read for homework.
This course can be improved by having the readings bound and the students can buy them. Towards the end of the semester the readings were long (eg. 36 pages) and it was a lot to print.
Have more classes available!
Class was great overall. Maybe have readings that deal with actual experiences.
It was too easy to me. I think putting more emphasis on reading the material would help.
I think this course should be improved based on the grading program. wish there was a curve of 3%
Equal out the class by being more positive about female's accomplishments instead of overly pessimistic about the current problems. Be more truly open-minded about other's opinions without judgment. Let students form their own opinions instead of teaching
While the videos shown were excellent and relevant to the course, I feel that perhaps there should have been more discussion during class instead of videos.
more videos, more examples, more guest speakers
I think what could be improved on is the syllabus. I got confused a couple times with the readings. Need to know if the readings are on WebCT or not.
The environment of the class room is very intense. there needs to be something that helps student break the barrier. Students who do express their opinion sometimes gets crush by the other students.
I can't really think of any way this course can be improved. The only reason I didn't rate this course as "excellent" was because it involves discussions and other oral activities that I'm not too fond of. But I know this kind of course requires these t
Slightly too many films, not too much dialog between the instructor and the students. Would like to hear more of the instructor's ideas and views about the topics of study. Would like the instructor to "teach" a little bit more, not just show films where
remind students of readings even though it's in the syllabus pick easy-to-read material
Honestly, I don't really think that there is anything to improve on. I think that the course was carried out very well. There was a reasonable amount of work. The course covered what I had hoped and more.
i think that this course is perfect. the learning part was really good.
more guest speakers and time for questions
if anything I wish we had more time in class. Although the Trask articles were interesting I thing there were a bit too many.
This course could be improved by having the students learn in a more 'hands on' kind of way, for example, more activities that would really explain the concepts of the issues being presented, so that the students would have a better understanding.
The availability of course readings and the amount of material covered.
I cant think of any ways
Maybe we didnt have to do the martial arts exercises the day of our review session for the test.
I feel that there would be a better understanding if the professor would go over the subject matter more in class rather than just having the class read it. Also sometimes the subject matter is a little too scattered.
A little more discussion about the readings, and more talk about the text book info. I feel like the text book realy isn't even needed for the class.
longer classes yeah!!!!
I think the movies that we wateched were really good, but I think it would have been better if the instructor taught us more. I think she introduced everything very well, but there should have been more instructing coming from her. Also I dont think the g
it would be helpful to announce the homework
I'm not sure... sometimes the readings get mixed together because of the similar content. Perhaps a little help with that?
some of the presenters were a little bit pointless, some of the class time could have been better spent.
in class, most of our lessons were on recognizing a lot of negativeness in today's society. we could improve by also pointing out the good changes that happened in our society too so that we aren't stuck just talking about all the bad stuff because that
relocate or renovate the current classroom. some of the films were unnecessary.
There is a lack of disciplinary action when students are disrespectful or don't do assigned tasks.
