This course illuminated social constructions that are implicit in everyday life. Various "taboo" subjects were discussed to eliminate the power of silence.
Amy is an amazing teacher!

I loved the atmosphere of the class and that we were all encouraged to realliy think about the issues being presented and to examine ourselves and how we felt about those issues. I also loved that we were all free to express our opinions and discuss the issues freely without feeling like we were going to be judged for out opinions. Amy's teaching style was also superb. I could tell that she was really passionate about the issues she was discussing and I couldn't help but be draw in to what she was saying. She encouraged me to think about the world in a way I hadn't really ever thought about it before and in doing so I learned so much and my view of the world broadened out and I honestly feel like a much better person for it. I really think everyone should take this class before they graduate and I would definately recommend it to anyone.
I liked how the course forced me to think differently about all kinds of different issues presented in class. I enjoyed all the different video, they were interesting and showed sides of arguments that I didn't see before.
Amazing class! Loved it and I spread the word for those who are searching for a good class to fulfill their prereqs or really have no direction. Wish I had the time to put this in as a major but I was unaware of the program (more so I took the class my junior year and rotc doesn't allow switching programs during this year..tsk tsk) enjoyed it though, wish there was forced participation, more quizes...etc. FUN FUN FUn!! Learned a lot as well
I like how this is an open discussion class on important issues that everyone is dealing with in today's society.
I liked that we were able to speak our minds and feel comfortable being able to say what we wanted to say. I also liked the assignments that were assigned and all the concepts we cover over the semester
I liked how Ms. Matsen made the class feel comfortable and more open. She presented and led the class into an exploration of many issues that I was previously only dimly aware of. This was my favorite class of the semester - so much so that I'm inspired to pursure an undergraduate certificate in Women's Studies. If I could take it again for more credits, I would.

Talking critically about present day issues that greatly affect our lives and how we view things. The content challenged your ways of thinking and opened your eyes to things you would have never noticed other wise. The best part of the course was the guest speakers and video/films we watched. They really bring new perspectives into light because they present people's real life stories and experiences and allow you to see what it is really like.
Being open to e flexable
The talk of Hawaiian culture and Americanization of that has shaped my perception of U.S. laws enforced onto the Hawaiians, the differences in family values, and the connection to the land seen in Hawaiians that I have never seen. I loved how Matsen expanded on the encroachment of American mainstream culture on almost every land we have touched then minimizing their histories by ignoring them in public. She showed a lot of passion in redefining feminism and the statistics in almost every lecture opened my eyes!
Everything about the course was great. One of the bests classes I've ever taken. Enjoyed it alot.
Class discussion and debates, I wish there were more of them. Breaking the class up into smaller sections was wise, but I think that those sections, rather than the normal class periods, would be best utilized for debates. The show and tells were fun, though time consuming... I kind of wish the class had more time for discussion.
Amy Joy taught us so many things that were amazing. I enjoyed the lectures and how everything from the textbook readings to the guest speakers related to us in some way or another. This course empowers me to stand up for myself and live a better life. I want to learn more about the issues that matter most, instead of who is dating who or which celebrates are coming out of the closet issues like who needs help in the world and why. Amy has taught me how to truly become an intelligent woman in our society.
I really liked the discussions in class and the teacher is very adamant about her opinions. She is an extremely good teacher with strong feminist views and I hope to be more like her.
Labs, being in small groups and being able to share your thoughts.
This is my absolute favorite class that I've ever taken so far, being a student here at UH Manoa. The video's, clips, special guest speakers, Amy (the professor), my TA's (Keenan and Mahina), and subjects we covered were very interesting and I can say that I feel even more like an activist now because of this course and I have decided to major in Women's Studies as well.

I loved the topics that were discussed. I also like that it touched on other issues that society faces today like homophobia, abortion, and domestic violence.
I liked the diverse ways in which we got to learn about the material, like presenters, movies, readings, etc.
The best part of the course was as asking critical questions and reflecting on them. We saw all perspectives on a problem and found why they were like that. I liked how the course change the way I looked at situations in life.

I learned a great deal in this particular class. It was an inspiration and eye-opener in several ways. I liked the films that we watched and the discussions that we had in class. I also liked reading the script to deepen my understanding about the text material.
I loved how passionate my instructor was when she gave lectures and lead class discussions. Some of the course material was very heavy, and there were times when the class was asked to share personal experiences. Whenever this happened, my instructor was very clear that our class was in a safe enviornment, and nothing would be repeated. Our class trusts our instructor and teacher assistants because they have made the class atmosphere a safe place to learn.

Everything about this course was very interesting. It was one of the only classes that i looked forward to going to, and it was my FAVORITE! It opened my eyes and made me realized how closed-minded i was.

The way the course was taught. It's great that we actually talk about important issues, breakdown all the myths, and stretch our minds. I liked the way our teacher always encouraged us to think deeper and to never assume that things are always as they seem. I went to every class and left having learned so much. We'd discuss personal and touchy matters and we'd respect eachother's beliefs doing it. What I liked the most was the safe environment where I felt safe to express myself and not be judged for my beliefs. Our teacher wasn't only our instructor, and mentor, but also someone we could count on, someone who genuinely cares about her students. The TAs in Lab C were a great help. They were skilled at conducting discussions, pointing out the main points and making lab fun. There were times we had to talk about hard topics, and they were always there for us too.

First of all, I liked the professor and the TAs for Lab C. I like the class because I learned a lot about Hawaii.
She was so expressive and passionate with everything that she talked about. I loved it.
I learned a lot from this course, I liked everything about this class especially the labs when we would have time to discuss what we went over in class together. The materials such as the movies and presentations we saw had very helpful examples in explaining the current topic.

The videos: it allowed us to see a different perspective of life and issues we may not be aware of (e.g. sweat shops in U.S. territories). Learning about the commodification of a culture and the land and how it relates to misogyny.
I found all aspects of the course interesting and fun. Learning about feminism during the past and the present really helped me to change my way of thinking and think more critically about the issues surrounding women in our everyday lives.
I liked the fact that this course doesn't just feed you rhetoric to try and sway you to follow their agenda, but they give you real life examples and ultimate truths of reality for you yourself to base your judgement on. The confidence of the course is what appeals to me most because when these truths and examples are looked at from the context of anyone subjected to the global domination of the united states, it becomes obvious that this isn't a way of life and that we must make changes. The content inspires personal revolution to stand up and first, be a human and second, help out your kind by being humane. This course has been a brief overview and has inspired me to get more in depth and continue education in women studies, be it a minor or major.
I really enjoyed everything this was a great class, opened my mind to a lot of new ideas. All of it was incredibly valuable and should be a required course.
The diversity of the issues covered; the interactive aspect and use of media to present current issues in Women's Studies as well as LGBT, race, and Hawaiian issues.

The course was sometimes very randomized with movies. Examinations were difficult because there was little structure or powerpoints to study from. Textbook readings were assumed to be understood and read. Perhaps, in-depth discussion or explanation of textbook concepts would be very helpful.
I think the class is great, I wouldn't change anything.
I think the class is perfect as it is. I learned so much in this class and my overall view of the world has broadened so much since taking this class and there isn't a single thing I would change about it. It's one of the best classes I have ever taken at UH and in my academic career as a whole.

Discuss more about the depreciation of women in education and science and how their work has been taken advantage of by male counterparts. Incorporate more analysis of current television shows (i.e. Desperate Housewives, etc.)and their roles in perpetuating the "female" and "male" roles in family and business.
I thought this course was great and it doesn't need any improvements. Just keep doing what you're doing.
More debates, there are enough controversial topics that people are bound to have different views. Better presentation of the pro-life side of the abortion debate, not all of them are insane... though it is admittedly hard to find one that isn't. Perhaps calling people off on a list for their opinions... not sure. Overall I think that both the instructor and the TA's did just about everything that can be done to increase participation. But I hate to see so many students that don't seem to have an opinion... One of the reasons I like debates is that, with a good devil's advocate, everyone can get involved; unfortunately, it also tends to lead to one versus many, and that kind of struggle can eat up time that might better be used to talk to the many. It's a hard question. I liked the idea of assigned roles given recently, but I can't help but feel that it would have been more... interesting... if people had just been assigned to a position in the debate, and told to defend it. Doing so really takes a knowledge of the arguments, especially if you end up on the side opposite from your own.

I really don't have any advice to how the course could be improved because I really enjoyed the class.
maybe not have so much discussion at the beginning of class because by the time we actually start what we are supposed to do class time is up. maybe set discussions aside strictly for lab time. Maybe not focus so much on gay/lesbian. i think it was taken overboard. i wouldve rather spent more time talking about hawaiian since it was a HAP focus or maybe even abortions.
I love how Amy teaches with such passion and enthusiasm. She is so animated and has a great orating voice, I enjoy listening to her speak about issues that she possess so much ferber for. She is very concerned and she cares about women's issues; her compassion is contagious. It is because of her that I am going to major in Women's Studies and I am also very excited to be TAing for this course next semester!

I think the reading, "Staging Tourism" should be cut out. I didnt understand it at all.
It would have been better if we didn't rush through all the topics.
Bringing in more guest speakers or presenting information from a variety of sources to give both sides of the argument etc. Sometimes I felt like some of the topics, and arguments were bias, and not really the TRUTH etc.
This course could be improved by having more group and hands-on activities. This course could also be improved by having more guest speakers.

I think that the course should be taught in smaller groups like the labs, as opposed to having a large lecture hall. I understand that this requires more teachers and time, but I think it would deliver the content more effectively.
The nature of the course allows for only a survey of key topics, which is understandable and unavoidable, but too little time was spent on key WOMEN'S issues in respect to a Women's Studies course.
Too many students. More lectures are needed. Too many terms, which sometimes do not really helpful. The most important is how to think critically.
Maybe one or movies less. They were good, just too many.
I loved the course! I wouldn't change a thing...maybe add more classes throughout the week? I'm ok with going 5 times a week! I felt there was so much information to take in during a class period that we were always cut off or I had to leave because I had another class to get to. I loved it no matter how short it felt. Thanks Amy for everything. You changed a lot for me and opened a whole new field to me. Originally I wanted to study anthropology, now I want to combine both by studying gender roles in different cultures. I don't know if I would have realized how much I love the subject matter if it wasn't for you, Amy and the WS department in general. Thanks again for helping me with my documentary project. I really appreciate it.

The movies and discussions in the labs after were really helpful and made me understand better.
I really liked all the films and documentaries we saw in class. I think they really added to the lectures. I also liked the guest speakers. They were very informative and all of them gave excellent presentations!

I really enjoyed having the labs on Friday. It was nice to be able to split into smaller groups to have intimate discussions.

This was the most interesting course that I have taken. I liked how it touched on various ethnic groups, although it was mostly Hawaiians. Also, I liked how you could express your opinions in class.

I wish more than 50 minutes of class time was allotted. There could be more encouragement to take higher level courses (though it is really up to the student if the topic interests them).

Instead of just talking about the issues maybe as a class or in our labs we can actually go out and do some sort of project as a group so as to begin to make a difference in the issues we are becomeing aware of.
I feel like having the class only for MWF really shortens the time and descussions. I think if class was a little longer that would make it better.
labs seemed to offer a better teaching experience because of the smaller class sizes. the TAs should be more helpful and less distracting.
There is a lot of emphisise on Hawaiian oppression. I feel like I am in two Hawaiian studies classes. There should be more emphasis on women around the world, not just the annexation of Hawaii, even though I do understand that we are in Hawaii.

Nothing really, it was pretty good to me.
This course can be improved by having the readings bound and the students can buy them. Towards the end of the semester the readings were long (eg. 36 pages) and it was a lot to print.

This course could be improved by having the students learn in a more 'hands on' kind of way, for example, more activities that would really explain the concepts of the issues being presented, so that the students would have a better understanding.
