18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I think that there was a lot of information covered on each test and it would've been helpful if it was broken down more.
Nothing..... perfect already
Using more online homework to stress important points, and give students a better understanding. The mastering biology helped to understand and set things better due to the animations and sample questions.
This semester Justin Walguarnery used more supplemental instruction such as videos and movies (vs. 171). I really appreciated that and hopes he uses even more next semester; even if they are very short they help break up the monotony of the lecture.
This course could be improved by including more iClicker questions in the lecture presentations, because those act as good practice questions for the exam.
Maybe add more demonstrations and examples. A lot of the clas just strict content and it can get a little taxing.
More tests throughout the semester, with only 2 midterms and final there is so much material study for each test.
Provide study guides, past exams to practice for upcoming exams.
He did awesome! I love his teaching style. No recommendations for improvements
I think his way of teaching is effective and helpful to engage in learning.
-have more exams to cover less amounts of topics per exam.
Make the exams a little more clear, they were extremely difficult even after studying really hard.
Nothing he was a great lecturer. There's a big difference in being a professor and being a professor that can actually teach and be a good lecturer and he was both. I purposely took his class late at 430 because he was teaching it and because I really liked him from the previous semester.
I really wish there were more exams or perhaps regular quizzes between exams. The quantity to study for each exam was a lot, and it might have been easier to have previously been tested on the material. Also, multiple iClicker questions might help to force critical thinking about the material, and would also help for the grading when students are a couple of minutes late or have to leave early. As it stands, I saw several people not get credit for attendance due to arriving late or leaving early when they were there the entire rest of the time.
By providing more diversity to his teaching plan. The videos shown in some of the lecture are a nice change of scenery.
N/A
He does not need to improve the teaching of this course.
Maybe post the slides on Laulima more in advance to give students the chance to review the lecture before class. Also, maybe posing questions to the class during lecture may stimulate the students to think and be ready to actively participate.
There could be a study guide, to help guide students to the more important details that would be on the test. Also, continue to show video clips during lecture, and maybe more iclicker questions to help students engage in topics.
Be a little more enthusiastic when teaching
hes already awesome
None
Focus more on the topics that students will be tested on. If a minor point will be on the test, make it more important in the lecture. Also, when introducing an entirely new complex topic, he currently teaches too fast and does not explain in great enough detail.
No ways, good teaching
Add a little more examples to confusing topics.
by giving more opportunity for extra credit.
I would rather see an improvement in tutoring than the teaching of this course.
He should give a study guide
Maybe give more outside examples and not just explain what is on the slides
I think Professor could assign more homework to keep students more occupied and know what he wants us to focus and study more for the exam. I feel there is not enough clarification about what students show know about exam and homework does not really help enough for studying for exam.
Although I realize that this is general biology, I feel like the topics were too spread out and kind of jumped around. Since there was no real continuity (we covered everything from protists to ecology), I feel like this semester was harder than 171. In general, Professor Walguarnery is a good teacher considering the broad range of topics he needed to cover during this course.
should give mini quizzes to prepare us for the exams
He should improve the structure of his lectures. Sometimes, he rushes through concepts with examples without discussing much of the main point of the slides.
nothing , good teacher
Explain what to study when preparing for the exam.
Does a good job!
He is doing very well. I don't think there's much to say.
Add more videos/fun facts/stories in your presentation. I liked when you would do that. It was nice break from the information overload we would get. concepts after concepts gets overwhelming so having videos or stories to help us understand it more was nice and made the concepts less intimidating.
Have less information to cover. There was way too many things we have to memorize.
I like the videos that he incorporates into his lessons, so I would say put more!
More iClicker questions to make the class more interactive, those are really helpful.
I feel that there is no improvement needed.
Keep doing what you are doing!
Stress what particular topics we should study for
He is an awesome guy. He don't need anything more
Honestly though the book was a good reference, I think if I had friends taking this class I'd tell the to just use the etext that comes with the masteringmicrobio for the rare times we need it, and NOT actually buy the text itself. We just don't really use it.
Nothing
Speak up during lecture. Sometimes very unclear and hard to understand. Change up the structure of the class, repetitive and becomes harder to pay attention in class. Especially for a late class like 4:30-5:20. Study guides for exams, saying to just look at slides is ridiculous...you have a lot of slides!!!
N/A
Like Bio171, Justin taught well. I felt that the curve should be more generous because Bio171 has an extremely large amount of content.
He could be a little more engaging. A lot of the time I felt like Justin was just reading off his slides and I didn't really need to be there.
There is SO much material to learn in this course. There should be a class period before the exam that is dedicated to reviewing material on the exam, or a practice exam if possible.
Speak better not monotone.
Everything is perfect.
provide handouts to make sure we understand. homework is good, but sometimes there needs to be a little extra, even if there is no credit involved
Try not to have late afternoon classes, put more videos
Course content provided in the media form of PowerPoint ought to be distributed by making such media available at the beginning of the semester. Because some students learn at different paces, as some would like to get ahead of other students in their individual learning process, I strongly suggest that PowerPoint by chapter be available at the start of the course and NOT be updated on Laulima on a weekly basis. I understand this is a general introductory level course run as a survey course, however, covering one chapter per class, especially when the class is run in the late afternoon, is not suggested. I strongly believe, as some other students may point out, is that given the amount of knowledge provided in the textbook, that knowledge is simply not transferred over to what is "important" and should be learned. I understand it is the student's responsibility to acquire most to all knowledge provided in the textbook, however, at a survey introductory level course, this is not the case. At minimum, there should be at least two class periods to cover one chapter, sufficient time to make clear what points are critical for information purposes, such as key questions and themes that will be needed to know for exams. Because this course ran covering one chapter per class and without weekly or daily quizzes, students are not drilling themselves about the importance of review and revision. Course content must be broken down and not teach students one chapter per day where learning is minimized and students just become information processors by memorizing the course content. The Biology department ought to get rid of both general biology I and II and institute a four-course sequence that also covers general biology, but in addition to offering the course content at a specialized level. If there are already emphases offered by the biology dept for students to choose from, then General Biology I and II should be replaced by those course sequences required for that student's emphasis, ie. cell adn molecular biology, marine, etc. Most of these suggestions are not due to a professor's fault, but are attributed to the structural deficiencies by course content and required courses for a biology major. It is the structure of a curriculum and course outline that determines how a professor will adapt to teaching, ie one chapter per class period.
sound more enthusiastic provide study guides
No comments (: This is one of my favorite classes because J. Wal is such an excellent professor. He communicates very effectively, makes lecture engaging and interesting, and answers any and all questions at any point during the class.
None
None you're awesome:) Can iCLICKER be extra credit again?
More iclicker questions through the lecture targeting more difficult concepts.
Possibly have a review session on all the chapters that will be on the exam(s) in class? And maybe review on all i-clicker questions during that time to refresh our memory.
I think the course is great, can be a bit boring at times but I think that deals with the student more than the actual lecture.
Iclicker is annoying and MasteringBiology is a poorly made website that doesn't help much for exam preparation. Lectures are good and slides contain most of the information needed to pass the exam. It is most helpful to learn from anecdotes and explanations rather than just reading off the slides in any case.
My only suggestion is that there are more exams that cover a smaller set of information because the two exams covered quite a bit and the material was overwhelming to study, especially with a number of other classes. Had I only been taking BIO 172 I could have easily studied for the exams and done well. However with the limited amount of time I had to devote to BIO 172, the amount of content within one exam was too much in my opinion which is why a number of students didn't do quite well on the second exam.
I think the information could be a little more organized in the power points, sometimes I couldn't tell which animals belonged in which phlyum. Also it is sometimes hard to hear you during lecture.
Not sure, everything is pretty well oiled.
I can't think of Ny ways that he could improve, I really enjoyed taking his class.
Justin is extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter and encourages students to ask questions about concepts they do not fully understand. Nothing can be improved.
Overall a great course, I see no need for improvement.
Not go through the lectures as fast.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Lectures are not boring, and masteringbiology is very helpful with learning the material.
I enjoyed learning about the different groups of animals, etc.
He is very good at explaining all the concepts and making sure that everyone understands the content. He provides lots of examples to ensure comprehension of the material.
The fact that we got into animals not jut the make up of them
All test questions come from his lecture
I like the way he does his reviews in class and always stresses main points. He also had various funny slides and videos that helped supplement the learning. I have always enjoyed his lectures from even Biology 171.
Watching videos that helped in remember concepts
Watching online videos to get an understanding of a different perspective.
The examples he used as well as the videos he showed in class. It showed real -life examples of what we learned in class.
I liked how he included video clips as examples to some of the concepts (how nerve cells work, how animals behave, etc.).
There were no surprises on the exam
I liked that the Professor was so clearly knowledgeable about the material that we covered and that he was able to give personal anecdotes about his time practicing his profession.
He kept things simple and to the point
I really liked his PowerPoint presentations and how he was always prepared for class and always reminded us about hw he posted online etc.
Aspects of teaching: thoroughness of slides, as well as the publishing of slides before class to follow along and make notes as the class progresses. Aspects of material: animals and the different biological systems.
I enjoyed the portion after plants and before ecosystem.
Explaining thoroughly
The Professor was very knowledgable about this subject. I was very confident that what I was learning was accurate.
The course is simple with presentations and tests.
Getting a good, general survey of the concepts in biology. The pace is pretty good and reasonable. It was challenging enough for me. For the grading, I'm very happy that the criteria and expectations were clear even before the semester started. This way I am able to keep track of how I'm doing and predict my grade.
Video clips that were shown in class, and interesting facts that were shared.
I like his grading scale, he is also very forgiving and willing to help.
all of it
Him
random videos and examples
Everything
I liked how he was very passionate about what he was teaching.
That the test were straight forward.
Professor Walguarnery was very approachable and understanding. The learning emporium is a great tool to help better understand the course.
I liked that the class has a great structure
I like that he incorporated personal experiences to help students understand the material better. Providing audiovisuals and pictures of animals and plants as examples. Material is very interesting, but hard to put together what is expected of the exam.
I really liked the videos shown in class during this semester since they gave me a sort of context in which I could place the topics shown in class.
Learning about the different systems of the animal
He provides possible exam questions, which we can answer without getting it correct and still receive for participating.
watching the youtube videos
The iclicker questions.
Very good at explaining the material and making sure were prepared for the test
I liked the way he reached and how knowledgable he was.
I liked how lectures were posted on Laulima. Helped out greatly.
He was very clear and easy to approach about questions. Homework load was very reasonable as well.
I like how e cover a broad range of things in biology and not just a couple things. It's a great intro to everything biology.
The visuals used in lecture presentations were very interesting and made lectures fun.
I really enjoyed the animal section of the course, which was mainly the second half of the semester.
The material
The animal behavior section. And how he teaches
That he was very clear about where he got the exam material from.. and that they were available online as well. That made it much easier to double check my notes and know what he's drawing from.
Interesting videos that were relevant and examples of real life things that are interesting like the water bear, hornets knowing where their nests are by visual markers etc
Great teacher
Slides were online. I didn't miss information if I wasn't able to make it to class
Mastering Bio, and PPT
Justin was very helpful and could be easily contacted.
The plant unit was the easiest to grasp. Learning about the nervous and immune systems of animals is also interesting, but it is a little more complicated and harder to learn.
Clicker questions
I like the fact that the exams come straight off the power point.
i loved the animal sections of this course
It was all about the big concept; mostly based on the slides given in class and the book was only supplementary
Not many aspects to list because there are many improvements to be made. The only aspect I liked was that the exam questions were strictly made up from the information given on the PowerPoint lectures. However, I believe this is not entirely the best method to learn because it leaves out so much other material and larger themes which can only be gotten from the textbook. I believe the exam questions that are taken from the PowerPoint ought to be used for daily quizzes, which then are counted towards a smaller portion of a student's overall grade (10%). Then, these same questions are used in similar fashion that may be paralelled on the final exam, some questions are the same and some questions are new. That way, students when studying for the final are continually reviewing past concepts that are tied altogether throughout the two midterms and one final, bringing all important points together. Students learn best when they are drilled the same question, and do not learn best when old questions are not asked again or are forgotten. This point also ties together with reorganizing both introductory general biology courses because students are overwhelmed by the mass overload of information without learning much and do not retain important information for later upper-level courses.
iClicker questions video examples
Learning about the human body and reproductive systems. I feel like we are now entering the medical aspects of biology, and that's mostly what I am interested in.
IQlickers
-Able to understand -analogy, examples are easy to understand
Videos with applications to the topics covered during class.
How i-clicker questions were either in the beginning, middle or end of class. Lecture slides and everything else were available on Laulima and the course itself was very interesting and I like the incorporation of videos in class (those really make us stay awake! & they were helpful to provide us visualization).
I loved learning about animals in all the different classes and phylum. Justin made each lecture easy to follow and added personal information which made the topics more relatable.
walguarnery was very clear and straight to the point
Learning about the different phylums of animals and also the video about plant communication.
Subjects involving animals. Tests were easy to study for but challenged my knowledge
Learning about the biodiversity of species on the planet.
Walguarnery is a great professor and knows how to effectively relay the course content to his students. There was a lot of content covered in this class, but Walguarnery broke it down into sections that made sense and helped clarify complicated processes and concepts.
I really liked how the material on the tests were from the slides learned in class. It made learning the material much easier to understand and kept the stress levels at a comfortable setting because I didn't need to scramble through the book to find different concepts.
The presentations were straight forward.

One of my best teachers
None.
Glad I was able to take this course with Dr. Walguarnery!
Make online homework worth at least some credit (1/2 credit or even lower) a day after the due date. I have never missed an assignment (171&172) except for one that I honestly forgot about. It impacted my homework grade a lot but hopefully it will not significantly impact my overall grade as I also do well on the exams.
Seriously interesting my professor had a pet skunk!
I am grateful that I was able to learn from Dr. Walguarnery. Although this was an introductory course to Biology, it was interesting and detailed nonetheless.
I really liked walguarney as my bio professor last semester and this semester. Always responded to emails promptly and he makes it so that students can find other ways to be able to pass the class instead of just basing it off of exams. Liked how he interacted with the iclicker and how he always posted the lecturers and emphasized which parts we should study. His exams were definitely challenging but he wasn't like other professors where they teach you on things they didnt go over in class. Taking his class again next semester. His teaching style is great and works really well with me.
He is very approachable and available for questions or discussion/clarification.
He is a very knowledgeable professor. He is patient in explaining misunderstood concepts, and is approachable.
Justin spoke very clearly, paused to ask if anyone had questions and understood, and even tried to include some humor to ease the possible boredom of students. I like that he tried to make past connections to older concepts or to real life. I think my favorite part was when Justin showed videos and images during lecture--it was a good break from just reading slides and listening to him speak. He is very willing to help students after and outside of class. This is my second semester with Professor Walguarnery and I am quite satisfied with him.
I will suggest this class to all my friends. I cannot see myself taking a bio class from any other teacher
I love justin
YAAASSSSS
Very knowledgeable professor. i would recommend to others.
The exams cover TOO MUCH material. It's ridiculous to expect us to be able to memorize so much information but it's impossible to get a good grade if you don't.
I enjoy it. Just wish other people would too.
Wonderful introductory biology course. I learned a great deal and biology has become one of my favorite subjects.
Very nice and helpful teacher!
Tests are hard and questions are unexpected, very specific.
Nope
He is a great teacher but some questions on the test are hard for how unimportant they are.
Please project your voice a little louder.
A very large amount of content.
Try to keep the exam questions fair instead of changing one word that makes the whole thing wrong.
The topics were very interesting, however there was so much information to study for each test. I would recommend giving at least one more test per section. That would give 5 tests in the semester, and would give us a better chance at showing that we know the material instead of shoving a lot of information and memorizing everything and then making us remember small details. I would rather demonstrate that in smaller portions. More tests are easier to handle than fewer tests with a ton of information to cover. But overall, it is a good class
Justin Walguarnery is competent is his specialized field, however, there are structural and organization deficiencies a part of the amount of course content in a short period of time. Also, the grading is also unfair. The current grading system is as follows: iClicker (5%), Exam 1 (20%), Exam 2 (20%), weekly homework (15%), and Final Exam (40%). Given the student's current understanding of this grade breakdown, students are inclined to focus on the final more than the previous exam because the final exam is worth the most. Thus, students will not study as much for the first two exams, while participation by iClicker and weekly homework are seen as not important because, first, homeworks are weekly and not daily (quizzes ought to be daily), homeworks also were not assigned at the beginning of the semester. For a 17-week semester, there were only 10 homeworks total. iClicker was not used much because only one question was asked at the end of the class period. As a student who has studied sociology of education, students learn best when they take daily quizzes at the beginning of the class period that covers material assigned from the previous day. I understand iClicker works efficiently in a large class, but using such a device removes the hands on learning for students who do not have pen and paper physically in front of them and are thus disengaged with their work. My suggestion for a new grading breakdown for this course as well as other biology courses: Participation: Do not use iClicker. Daily quiz tests reading material assigned from previous class period. Worth 15%. Homework: Assigned weekly, comprised of some new material, as well as questions from previous quizzes. Worth 15%. Exams: More frequent. All exams worth 50% (Each exam worth its own percent depending on how many exams total there are. For example, if there are 25 chapters total, 10% worth per exam that covers five chapters). Each exam covers at minimum five chapters (if one chapter is covered per day). Final exam: This exam is cumulative that uses questions already seen from previous exams and quizzes. Worth 20%.(If a student waits for the end of the semester to study, then all learning is mostly lost. Please distribute this information of suggestions to biology department professors and people who will use this information to make quality changes which are tremendously needed if the biology department wants to produce high-quality students who are future professionals and researchers
Look forward to seeing you next year!:)
Justin Walguarnery is a good teacher and very knowledgeable about the subject of biology.
Even though I didn't do quite so well this semester, I can truly appreciate Professor Walguarnery's teaching style and I will always recommend him to any student taking a biology course. He is knowledgable and is able to make class an interesting environment while providing us with ample material to study so that we may do well in his class.
Thanks for being such an awesome teacher!!
Tests were often much harder than the material covered in lecture
Great instructor!

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Nothing. Thoroughly enjoyed this class.
The books were both interesting but the second book, Epigenetics Revolution, was a little more difficult to grasp without taking genetics, so it was harder to keep with with discussion.
so far prof. walguarnery is great at teaching these seminar type classes and as far as i am aware, he does not need to do anything to improve the class
Have the students attempt to find answers (via research papers) to the questions they have regarding the material. This may create a better platform for discussion.
He does a great job! Sometimes the concepts/topics/terms/etc were challenging, but they were mostly clarified in class. If he could post some pictures/videos to help explain a potentially confusing topic (before we're going to discuss it), then the students may have a better understanding while reading the book. I think it's very important to verbally discuss things to promote understanding, and the video/picture/resource could just be an optional thing for people who are interested.
The small class atmosphere was great. The discussions were within an intimate setting which allowed for a smoother class period. This also allowed us to go over the material more in depth to get a better understanding about the topics.
It is excellent as it is.
Add in other sources, like video clips, that can better explain some of the more difficult ideas.
Nothing in particular... If anything I would write out reading assignments/writing assignments all on syllabus to prevent confusion about due dates, when to read which chapters, etc.

Maybe incorporate more videos or presentations about the material being learned. Some people are visual learners, so it could be helpful to have pictures or videos.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I liked the open discussions in class. Forced us all to think critically and have a deeper understanding of the material.
I really appreciated the free rain of the course and the consistency of the work (reading 2 chapters every week and no exams). I feel like this is one of the first 1 credit courses I have taken that has actually been fair work for 1 credit and not more then it should be.
i liked that this course was a discussion-based course and allowed for opinions and questions to be a major part of the class, rather than a traditional lecture-based class
I liked that the professor did research on some of the most common topics of interest and was able to provide good descriptions/answers in class.
This was a great topic. I liked how the course was very interactive. This was a chance to learn science by asking questions in a very welcoming environment. I also got to learn more about a cutting-edge new field that I probably wouldn't have known much about otherwise. I liked the two books that were used, especially Epigenetics Revolution. I really like the movie we watched as well. It just brought everything we were studying into real-life context.
I enjoyed the small setting and being able to actually interact with the professor.
I like reading the books they are very interesting. I also like it when Walguarnery explains confusing topics in class.
I like how the class was set up, that anyone can voice their thoughts and opinions on a subject.
I really enjoyed how all students were required to ask a question, and that these questions were not anonymous. If anonymous, I may have only came up with poor-quality questions. Essay topics really helped me understand the text material, especially the essay about DNA methylation. This assignment forced me to learn the material to a deeper level. Although we all do not like to write papers, I think these were necessary, and just at the right amount. The one-page requirement relieved us that we did not have to write pages and pages. It also helped us to be concise with our paragraphs and be straight to the point. I also think revision opportunities forced students to learn. If everybody got 100%, they would've taken you easily and slacked off on future essays. Even to those who did get 100% on their first tries, it was good for them to know that they needed to keep up with the good work rather than thinking that it was just an easy A.
Hw questions from the readings were answered in great detail and helped me better understand the material.
That the students got to express their thoughts and opinions about topics. That there were no exams.

25. Other comments:
Justin should have more classes like this. I feel like Iʻve learned more in this class about biology and genetics than I have in all of my upper level biology, genetics, microbiology courses that were all 3+ credits.
at one point there was a day that the class was on its own for discussion and I thought that was pretty valuable to have the students initiate there own discussion.
Overall, I'm really glad I took this course. I wish there were more courses like this to allow us to explore different topics of science that aren't really covered in depth.
Very relaxed course that teaches a lot.
Both books were great. Agile Gene was a good book to start off with -- less technical and more entertaining to read. However, Carey's book was also necessary for us to really learn. Many topics may have been a little challenging, but it's good to get us exposed to these topics and it helped to listen to you break down some of the hard information/analogies for us. Thank you for a great semester! I would recommend this type of class to another student.
I will be using the suggested readings, especially the epigenetics revolution, as references for future studies. The second reading was my personal favorite of the two assigned readings because it helped me better understand the terms and processes of the subjects given. Mahalo for a wonderful and educating semester, Professor Walguarnery!

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Great professor. I'd recommend providing more connections to the real world to aid in understanding the material. Also, maybe show a couple videos relating to course content to mix it up a bit.
I feel the class was taught very well. It does not really need any improvements. The main thing that would be a problem was that the microphone wouldn't work some days, but that was a technical issue not a teaching issue.
remove lip ring. or add additional lip ring to opposite side of mouth. it's all about symmetry. also, tighter t-shirts.
Display more information on mastering biology and when assignments are due.
Talk with a little more enthusiasm to engage the class more!
N/a
To not have homework due on the day of any exam.
Professor Walguarnery could add more iClicker questions throughout each powerpoint lecture. The iClicker questions really solidified my understanding of the material and more iClicker questions per lecture would only improve that.
You seem to talk with your muscles a lot. Either get fat or wear a long shirt cause it can get distracting.
He may possibly be the best teacher i had this semester. im taking a class taught by him at 4;30pm next semester so that should equate to how good he is
Ask more questions to the class, and have them interact more.
Have more supplementary materials like mastering biology. The activities required to do in the homework provide a better understanding of the materials. Also help to remember important content.
This instructor should go over material that is going to be on the exam, it's a bit difficult to go over all the slideshows when there is just so much material covered over the course of the semester. An outline will also be helpful for students because it helps eliminates unnecessary topics within a chapter that we need to study.
none
Keep doing the same. Maybe more example videos
He was very enthusiastic about the subject. I don't think the class needs to change.
Make homework count
Include more iClicker questions throughout the lectures, because those are good study questions for the exams.
Justin is a great instructor. He is always organized and always answers questions. He is very easy to talk to and knows the material. What makes him such a great professor is that he knows the material AND is able to conn
To be honest i feel like he did a great job at teaching. Basically nothing to improve on.
Give practice exams
Maybe some animation on power points would help engage more of the class.
Nothing, his teaching method is very reasonable
Act a more enthusiastic about the topics he's teaching and do more iclicker questions.
Justin may improve greatly if he connected terms with real world examples because it gets a bit monotonous when presenting similarly close to the powerpoint slide texts.
Have more interaction with the students. The lectures seem so dry when all we do is listen and then at the end do one clicker question.
Maybe fix the microphone and more iclicker questions, that's about it.
Give practice exams not just Iclicker questions.
Nothing, really enjoye the course. Liked how everything tested on was covered during lecture. No surprises on the test, was greatly appreciated
More iClicker questions can get the class more involved! They are fun and enjoyable.
Nothing really needs improving. He explains all slide content and gives pertinent examples
Perhaps have more iclicker questions. The iclicker questions were truly what made me think harder about each topic, and it kept me from getting distracted from the lecture.
There should be a greater incentive to come to class, such as making the iclicker questions worth actual points or making them part of the grade.
none
Wouldn't change a thing.
Professor Walguarnery can tend to be monotone at some points. If he were to engage the class more, it might help.
It would be helpful if he had sent a weekly email reminder about the Mastering Biology homework. The syllabus should be updated to include a description about the Mastering Biology homework (because it doesn't). The practice questions he posts during lecture should be posted on Laulima or included in the slides before class as a study aid.
I don't think he needs to make any major improvements!
Keep doing what he is doing!
No room for improvement.
to go slower on important parts of the lesson
Include videos in the lecture to add variety to how the material is taught.
Try using examples from the lab
Have grades more readily available on Laulima so students can check their progress throughout the course of the semester.
He can not be so monotone, more enthusiastic
Try different methods during lecture to encourage learning, like having planned small quiz passed out once a week or once a month
Include some points that are not talked about in lectures that were on the exams
He could speak in a less monotone manner.
He is doing just fine.
Have a better classroom so seats are more available
N/A
Power points have too many words and it is hard to take notes with the spead of speech that is used during lectures.
He can't. He is too perfect.
Nothing much to be changed.
Its good as it is!
Everything he says comes straight from the power points, maybe he can expand on the concepts.
speak slower on some points, and enunciate words a little better
have more midterms instead of getting tested on 9 chapters at once for each midterm
He did a very good job. There is not much to improve
It was perfect!!! LOVE this class!!!
I pretty much thought everything was good.
He was excellent in all aspects.
Take it slow for the students to understand.
There isn't need for improvement, his class is easily understandable but challenging enough to keep me interested in the lectures.
providing a practice exam
He can improve by using more videos and other presentation styles to alter his lectures a bit.
prep class more for exams, provide study guides
Great professor an informative presenter! As an improvement I would say more iclicker questions if time allows. They really helped me to stop during the lecture and think about what we had gone over, and I noticed I retained more information from those lectures. Also, put questions in the middle of the lecture, not just the end.
Give the students study guides instead of going over all lecture material. There were too much material to read and go over before ever exam which had students put un necessary information into our brain. Made exams a little more challenging.
Dr. Walguarnery is amazing! He really helped me understand the new concepts and made me more interested in Biology in general!
maybe slow down a little more for the harder to grasp concepts
Have a study guide for the exams
Nothing, it is a good course.
He can't; he teaches very well
He can be more active.
Have the power points available the night before class
I think that it would have been easier if there wasn't as much chapters covered for each tests. It was a lot of information to learn.
I do not think that there is anything that Justin can do to improve this course anymore.
More interaction than clicker
Cutting down the amount of material that are going to be covered on the exam
It wasn't really in his control, but it was difficult understanding him because the microphone was not working properly. And also, it was a little irritating when the iclicker wasn't working either.
He can improve by giving study guides for the exams.
Maybe involve more clicker questions to further engage the class in the concepts being taught to the students
Put more emphasis on things that are important and that will be on the tests
Very helpful and effective in communicating
More interactive lectures
I wish there were more exams covering fewer chapters per exam. Also, it's not his fault, but the microphone went out several times. In a large classroom like this lecture, it is difficult to hear if you are in the back without amplification.
eliminate monotone style of speaking. Be more animated.
Great course, Loved learning about the topics!
I noticed that the syllabus and first PowerPoint on the class grading policy are not clear. The syllabus does not include homework in the grading but the PowerPoint does.
Have more iClicker questions and present them more spaced out during class, to keep the class engaged, awake, and listening.
N/A
explained everything as clear as could be
Be more clear on the specific topics that will be on the test
I think that Justin Walguarnery does a good job teaching biology. He is fair on grading and the exams are straight from the powerpoint we learn in class. I don't think Justin needs to do anything to improve teaching of this course.
Go slower or cut down on material taught.
none, a great professor!
Allow weekends to complete homework
He is an amazing professor! I wish all of my professor taught like this one.
The only improvement could be to leave the questions in the lecture in the powerpoint.
By giving more tips and advice for doing well in his course since Biology is a difficult course to undergo.
Not really sure. He does really good with his lectures.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The predictability was good. You know what is expected of you, know what is going to be covered, know what to study for the exams, etc. It makes it that much easier on the students. Also, I liked the fact that Dr. Walguarnery seemed to sincerely care about the students and their grades.
I liked that the lectures were always posted online so that you could refer back to them and not have to worry about missing anything. I liked that the iClicker questions helped secure your knowledge of the main concept. I liked that he was easy to get in touch with.
The tutors he supplied for us, and the interactivity within the class by using iclickers.
The tests covered what the professor said they would and there were no surprises! Also, the grading scale is helpful!
Detailed overviews of the concepts through powerpoint
The exams cover material that was discussed in class and students are informed of what to study.
I liked that he was very straightforward about the material on the exam.
I appreciated that I knew exactly was expected of me going into the course. In addition, I liked that I knew what I needed to study for the exams, consequently helping me to do better on the exams. Professor Walguarnery's slide show presentations were very well made--the use of pictures rather than words was very helpful and forced me to listen to what Professor Walguarnery was saying rather than trying to read what was on the slides.
PICTURES!!! <3
The online homework was easy, and helped with the understanding of the lesson.
The grading was very fair!
All of it
Well spoken professor, knows what it is he is talking about.
The lecture content, book , and homework covered the same materials. This allowed for ease in studying and understanding materials.
the beginning stuff
Professor was easy to learn from and examples made things interesting
Justin's teaching style. It was enthusiastic and understandable.
He makes sure you know the material.
I liked how his exams were based exactly off of his lectures in class, so they were fairly easy to study for.
Justin is a great instructor. He is organized and always answ
I thought learning about viruses was pretty cool.
His knowledge of the course
Really appreciated the iClicker points as they really helped us maintain reasonable grades.
The powerpoint slides
I enjoyed the grading system.
I liked that he kept the exam material completely based on the power points he showed on class.
The interactive questions.
Mastering Biology I liked best.
I liked that all the material needed was on the PowerPoint, no surprises on the exam. Covered everything equally.
The class was very fair in grading and there were no surprises on the test that was not covered in class.
I like how although I am not a fan of Biology, I do not struggle with understanding the material because the lectures and homework are clear and informative.
The grading scale., also like stated early no surprises on the test because everything covered was on the lecture slide
His example slides and his powerpoint. He makes the clearest and most simple power points to help myself understand the material.
Knowing that our exams came directly from the slides so we didn't have to study two things
I like how extra credit was given to students that come every class with their iclickers. It gave students a slight rise in their grades.
I like that he is willing to answer any questions that students had. I also appreciated the review sessions he would have right before each exam. This helps reinforce exactly what I need to know for each test, and I really appreciated it.
I liked the mastering biology homework. They helped in preparation for the exams.
The use of the iClickers each lecture.
Learning about taxonomy.
Lecture slides were on point. There was nothing that wasn't included on the slides that showed up on the exam. All information presented was relevant to the course material to be learned.
He is good at explaining the concepts and always makes sure he allows students to ask any questions.
I really enjoyed learning about evolution and all the factors that play into it.
I liked how the exams were based off of the lectures and that we utilized the iClicker to better our knowledge of the certain subject we were learning.
Power Points were very concise
The order in which the topics were covered.
his use of powerpoints in regards to the main topics of the lesson
The length of the powerpoint for each lecture class. They were short and to the point.
I thought the material taught was interesting and was clearly taught. I also liked how the homework related to the course and helped to prepare for the test
I like how the course was well-organized. I always knew what to expect and what I needed to do to perform well.
How there are only 3 tests total, and no cumulative! So helpful!
lecture slides are interesting
The simplicity of his lectures
It was straightforward.
I just love biology
I liked how we had iclicker classes
Mastering Biology homework
I like that test are based off of power points and that the homework is related to material taught during lecture.
Every aspect is all right.
The clear and thorough power points
He is very straightforward. I actually like the iClicker questions because it makes me reflect on the lectures.
the general understanding of biology I received from this course
- The powerpoint slides were easy to understand and straight to the point. - Professor did not read off the slides - Explains very well
Professor Walguarnery made the materials easy to understand through his clear explanations. He is very helpful and is easily approachable if students need help.
I like how I get to interact with use of the iClicker
I enjoyed some of the sections that were discussed, information about taxonomy was interesting. iClicker questions were good and helpful.
The interesting and engaging teaching environment.
Good explanations and the teacher seems to enjoy what he's teaching.
Lectures were helpful and interesting.
The exams are based on the powerpoints
My favorite aspects were learning about the reproductive processes in both animals and plants. I also enjoyed learning about the different types of bacteria and viruses present in the world.
I like when he related class material/biology with animals and visuals
I liked how the tests were non cumulative because there was just such a huge amount of information covered in this course that it would have been a bit much to study the finer details of everything for every test.
It was all quite interesting.
the iClicker questions - they helped me actually realize how much I'd understood the day's lecture, which made me go to the book and review chapters.
When he would use cool fun interesting examples to back up concepts. EX: glowfish
The information learned. I thought I was going to learn about the animals already, thank God there's another class for that.
His lectures were very informative.
He teaches in a way that is easily understandable.
I liked the iClicker.
Having power point slides posted before class
I liked how he made use of Mastering Biology for homework. It was a good and different way to do homework, compared to other courses.
The aspects of this course that I liked best was learning new things.
I love doing iClicker questions to help see if I am understanding the material.
I liked the iClicker questions for attendance and participation points.
slideshows are short and easy to understand
Grading was already curved; the main concepts were the focus of tests
We covered all the basics of the field of biology, and learned about the significance of each concept.
Thorough power points and lecturing
His class was interesting and you learn alot
Power points were good they weren't overfilled with info or too long.
The power points and lectures made the material easier to understand.
His slides were clear, concise, and explained the topics well.
The lecture itself was very helpful, along with the teachers input and description of topics
the course was pretty dry, but I like the examples used when covering new material.
I really learned a lot! I enjoyed it.
I loved the way he graded his exams. He was a very fair and generous grader, and his curves really helped to improve the grades of a lot of people.
The online practice on Mastering Biology was a very useful teaching/learning tool and helped me to understand the content better
Evolution
I like how the exams are straight from the power points we learn in class. The exams are fair and Justin doesn't put tricky questions on the exam to lower students' grades. The grading of this course is also fair, including the extra credit points students' earn from clickers.
Everything was straight forward. There was no question about what he expected from us.
through slides
His style of teaching.
The material was presented clearly and the exams were all topics reviewed in class
How real examples were brought into play with the concepts we were learning in class. Most of the examples caught my attention and helped me remember the concepts better.
The powerpoints were clear and had detailed information, which made things easier to understand. Mainly just having the visual figures helped a lot.
The course wasn't difficult to grasp. Professor Walguarnery goes at a good paste and his exams reflect our knowledge. Doesn't make learning stressful instead, fun.
I think I really enjoyed how personable he was regardless of how big the class was.

good job
Justin is a great professor. He knows the material very well and is able to connect it to real life issues as well as his studies. He is well prepared and organized. Asking him questions to clarify subject material is also very easy. He is great at explaining material. I knew most of the material going into the class and still learned a great deal. Overall Justin is a great professor. I would definitely take more of his classes in the future.
Keep teaching the way you teach. An excellent Biology teacher.
Very good course. It was a little challenging and daunting to figure out what information would be important to know for the tests since we covered about 8 or 9 chapters for each test. Other than that, the material was presented very clearly and I really appreciated the time you spent clarifying information and helping us understand the material. I also really liked that you tried to make everything as simple as possible while still retaining the most crucial aspects of each topic.
Lecture is hard to follow sometimes because it gets monotonous and doesn't seem to interesting.
I liked that Professor Justin was prompted to answer questions and was very fair when it came to grading homework.
The iclicker questions were very helpful.
Really enjoyed having this class, was well taught and I feel I learned a lot.
Place some videos in the lecture to keep students alert. I like that we use an iClicker. It encourages me to go to class.
I have registered to be in Mr. Walguarnery's class next semester due to his awesome course this semester!
Loved this course with this instructor!
very good professor, understands students if there is a problem or need in taking a test due to absence, speaks easily so students understand
I would also recommend adding another test to help spread out the assessment of the material.
Very good professor.

I would like him to teach Bio 172 for next semester. Great teacher with great reasonable grading system.
Can their be no more iclicker buying books is expensive as it is...:(
You can tell that he really cares and wants all of his students to succeed. He answers any questions that students ask in a very respective and clear way. He speaks very clearly too.

Can't wait for next semester!!!!
I loved the class and I loved the teacher.
stay snazzy justin
More study guides to help the students study what actually needs to be studied.
He was a good professor that did a good job teaching.
None.
Its a fun enjoyable class
I recommend this instructor for this course for others.
I would take another course from this professor.
You're the best
It would be perfect if there were more seats available because it seemed like there were more students than seats. A lot of times, people ended up sitting on the ground during lecture.
I would definitely recommend this course to anyone!
He's a great professor who is very understanding and flexible.
Thank you!
Awesome biology class! :)
Very good professor, easy to understand, learn a lot, very helpful. He is knowledgeable and knows how to pass on his knowledge to his students.
Just Walguarney looks like a young Sylvester Stallone and is a very stimulating instructor. Despite the fact that it was an 8:30 AM class, he managed to keep me awake and engaged through almost every lecture. He is very knowledgeable about the subject and has a great way of presenting the information. I also appreciated how straightforward the information was, and how there would be no surprise content on the exams.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
offer midday/afternoon classes. 8:30 is very early and 3:30 ends pretty late. his next semester class is even later. I would have definitely taken him again if he offered better times.
include video(s) during presentation
He could cut off some contents that he decide to not bring to be in exam. There are many details that students cannot remember all in short time.
I can't think of any way to improve the course.
Perhaps, bring in actual props so we can actually see what certain organisms look like or models of different biological processes for visual aid.
LESS WORDS ON POWERPOINTS. Listening to what he says and writing notes with this difficult course does not help understand what he's saying. Overall, great with the subject. Very knowledgeable.
To improve on the course I would recommend that Walguarnery used other forms of teaching aids besides powerpoint. It would make the class more interesting if there were some videos or something else mixed in.
No iClicker!
Make more time to meet with students. I feel like we could only reach you after class or through email.
Talk a littl bit slower on the key slides of the class
Shouldn't change.
Nothing! Great class, interesting, and not too dense.
More office hours
He can possibly slow down in his lectures because it was difficult for me to take notes.
Take more time on the lectures. Instead of completing one chapter everyday he could possibly, talk about them more thoroughly.
He's an outstanding professor. I think he should hint the specifics of what is on the exams so that we don't over study or under study.
I understand that there is a required amount of information we need to know by the end of the semester, but I think it would be easier, and more efficient, if we had more tests cover less chapters. Having information from eight different chapters is A LOT to review.
Sometimes Justin can be a bit mono-toned. He could try to have some exciting points here and there to wake everyone up.
I think preparing some sort of study guide would really help students with the exams.
Justin's methods of teaching are very effective and his powerpoints are very informational and easy to follow.
Use more examples from the book to describe challenging topics.
Justin Walguarnery is a great teacher and he is well informed about the subject he is teaching. I honestly wish I could say that about all my teachers. I wish I could take his class again.
making the presentations a little more lively.
Make lecture more interesting, and give reminders for online homework
make it more fun
Maybe giving more examples and using smaller words so we can actually grasp the concept.
Don't know
I think Justin is doing a fantastic job.
Some concepts were over our heads, but to the point where no one was even able to formulate a question about how lost we were. Mainly with the difficulties around DNA.
By providing more homework.
Considering the amount of material that needs to be covered, he did a good job of stripping everything down to the basics however with the large amount of "stuff" to know I would have found it very helpful to have a study guide in preparation for the exams. I felt that the review sessions were lacking in that the open question and answer was fine, but the advise to study was to look at everything on the powerpoints...frustrating! For an intro course I was hoping for a little more guidance to what to focus on or what topics students had problems with in the past to pay more attention to.
Possibly add some sort of in class activity to make it more exciting.
Give practice exams

He could try to be a little less monotone and more enthusiastic?
it's pretty good as is; lectures are very easy to understand and fairly straight forward
He could make use of the iClickers more to see if there are some topics that need to be covered more.
Giving the homework till Sunday to complete. Friday is such an odd day if it is opened on Monday.
He is a little monotone and needs a little more enthusiasm but other than that he's perfect!
He could make a study guide, perhaps.
He's great
If lecture and lab corresponded better with one another the entire Bio 171 course would be greatly improved.
I think that if he made the class available earlier in the day I would be happier, but other than that I enjoy this class.
I think it is perfect the way it is.
It would be nice if he was slightly less monotone.
Simplify some of the material
I got nothing.
More homework problems to help undersatnd the subject and to have more practice with terms that are needed to know.
Don't make clicker questions mandatory.
He does a really good job of teaching the material and being straight forward.
He could be a little more interesting.
I really connected with his way of teaching, perhaps better review sessions would be nice, but it was still good.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
extra credit opportunities. He should have mastering count for some of our grade if hes going to assign and expect us to do it every week.
I like how you give real world applications of the topics we discuss and not just "learn this because I said to"
the i clicker questions.
Its fair grading
I liked that the lectures were online and we can print them out to study with them and we didn't have to take notes. The professor was really cool. He was really easy going and really open to all of our questions.
- He had powerpoints posted up on Laulima to refer back to. - He was clear and understanding in teaching biological knowledge. He does not just read off the text, but also give examples and explains in a very simple way for us to understand him. He also uses real life situations and issues that are currently happening now, that we can relate to.
Anything that had nothing to do with cells.
The lectures were intriguing
The lectures were interesting and very informative. I learned a lot in this class and am glad that I signed up for it. The instructor spoke clearly and gave great examples to help each student fully understand the material being presented.
I liked how the slides were put up online and could be viewed again to retread the information
N/A
I like the examples used in the power points and he explained all of the difficult concepts very thoroughly.
That he explained the slides of each chapter rather than reading right off the powerpoint slides as more big lecture professors do.
Iclicker was great exercise. His attitude was always great. He's an outstanding professor.
The course was straight powerpoint, and the exam answers were found all in the powerpoint. There were no tricks, or games when it came to the exams, just straight to the point. Justin also went through the lecture fairly quickly which was great.
Well, I like biology, so the subject matter itself was engaging.
I liked how Justin's powerpoints were easy to follow along with and simplified the content so I could make better sense of new concepts.
I liked that the power points were straight-forward, and they were also posted online, so I could go and study the information.
The theory of evolution
I liked the fact that attending class and participating in the iclicker questions is extra credit. Many students dont show up to class and get good grades on the test. I believe that it is fair for the students who do go to class and strive to learn to get extra credit.
having the iclicker test questions.
Lab
his lectures are not very long
Learning about viruses and bacteria was my favorite part of the class. Also learning there is a real animal called a mole-cricket was pretty awesome!
Subject matter
I like how he really knows what he's talking about and can answer any of our questions.
The course material was clear what we needed to know. He didn't give us the answers directly, but as long as you went to lecture and paid attention then you would know what would be on the exams.
The reading material.
The consistency of the online homework assignments; always assigned and due on the same days at same times. The iclicker involvement was cool too, not just for attendance, but to see if you're understanding the material for the lecture.
I enjoyed the evolutions and origins aspects of the course.
He uses lots of relatable examples in talking about the topics
In Professor Walguarnery's lectures he clearly states the main points and tells you that these are the things to know for the upcoming exams. Also, if you do not understand a topic too well he goes into detail about it and tries to explain it beyond just the textbook definition.
I loved his curve and the boost iClicker questions provided!
power points and supplemental videos
I liked how broad of a range of topics were able to be covered so we were able to be exposed to many different fields of biology that are out there. I felt like I was able to find the specific areas of biology that I liked and disliked.
The lectures had nice pictures that effectively helped my understanding of the material.
It was straight forward which I loved.
Everything
The power points were very helpful, not so much text that it becomes very dull.
He keeps everything simple
Examples of current research about relevant topics were very neat.
I like that he doesn't require the book. Powerpoints are to the point and give you the information that he thinks is most important. I know exactly what he wants me to study and know for the test.
Powerpoints were uploaded in advance allowing students to print the slides to take notes.
He articulates his words very well and will explain and answer any question about any complex concepts in detail.
There was nothing that stood out. It was a lecture every day.
Topics were interesting
You get points for participation, the course was easy to understand, and the professor is understandable.
The homework. It helped me to use the knowledge that was learned in classand apply it. This helped me retain the knowledge better.
He was very straightforward with his lectures and exams. Would summarize the text so that we could understand it better. But pictures on the slide which made it easier to connect difficult concepts to something that we know or can easily picture.
That there were only a few tests.
I liked how straight forward his tests are, no trick questions or anything. He goes over exactly what will be on exams and makes it easy to study.
I liked that he put the lectures online.
I loved that he could relate everything in lecture to real life applications/examples, it really made me remember and understand the material.

This is a great professor and would recommend him to students.
Several things that throw me off is -his large vocabulary -a lot of things on his lectures. I understand he's smart, but half the time in class I try figuring out what he was trying to say and look up the huge word he uses. Overall, great professor! Smart, and tries his best to make things easy.
There was a lot of material covered in this course. I would have really appreciated a study guide for the tests.
Some questions on tests weren't covered in class
Again, he's outstanding. I want him to teach all my science courses.
Good course but there was just a lot of information crammed into one semester.
Good Job! I love the power points and how the exams are related exactly to them. See you in 172
My problem with this course is that it is EXTREMELY difficult to study for the exams. I really believe that students would benefit from some sort of guidance (i.e. a study guide) to prepare for exams.
Great teacher! Very knowledgable.
Mastering biology assignments helped with studying and understanding the concepts
Overall an extremely friendly and intelligent teacher; he never hesitated to help students and answer questions. Also, he made lectures interesting and made sure to slow down and emphasize important pints throughout lectures. I would give him a solid A as a teacher and recommend anybody in the field of biology to take him as a professor.
This is a great Biology class I learned a lot.
would recommend people to take this class again with the same teacher.
I would like to take the next biology course with this instructor.
Mastering bio isn't very helpful (don't feel like I really learn anything from it) but it's a good grade booster. Justin is really nice if you have any questions about anything!
None
I would take this course from him again!

Thanks for making Biology fun and not to painful.
Justin is a good teacher and understands the material very well.
Great teacher
Thanks for a good semster.
Overall one of my better professors I have had at UHM. I plan to take another BIOL course by him.
I loved this class even though biology generally doesn't come easy to me he made it very enjoyable and understandable.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
let students know that you don't really NEED to buy the text book. Barely used anything in the bundle except Mastering.
The material actually tested on is not as difficult/in depth as his slides. My only frustration was that I studied very difficult concepts covered in the slides but the test did not cover as complex/difficult the information given to us wise. However, I recognize the more challenging things I studied that were not tested on I will see later on in medical school. So there really is no loss and there is nothing wrong with over studying on my end.
The only thing I would request is study guides, so that we're not in the dark when it comes to test time.
I feel like this class was already quite great.
Remind about homework after each lecture
Maybe be a bit more energetic while teaching. I understand that it's a lecture but adding fun facts or something similar would make class more enjoyable.
There is a lot of information to know it can be overwhelming for yes tests. Maybe break it down more so There is less material per test that we have to study or maybe have homework or extra credit that forces you to study the material little by little? I don't know just a lot to memorize I don't know that that can be avoided.
Nothing, he's good!
Maybe provide slight studies guides, the exams are really tough because we need to know so much information!
He is doing a good job
Add more interesting videos, but other than that this class was awesome!
Have a study guide for the exams
add more iclicker questions that are likely to be on exams
I think he can improve by maybe giving one more iClicker question per lecture.
Nothing
His power points were excellent and the way he summarized the materials was very good. But his lectures were just exactly off his power points, if there was a better way to connect the lectures to more example to memorize the material that would be nice. I think it was good of him that he pointed the main idea, and had the main idea repeated in multiply slides. But if feel like there could be better connection to the rest of the terms to the main idea, to help better memorize so much material. The test did not cover all the material, and there is a lot of material that we go over. So maybe we could have more homework quizzes that go over the different material and the details, and for the test to focus on the bigger ideas and concepts that we need to know and that applies to other classes.
Assertive on Mastering Biology Homework. Reminding when new homework is available.
Less content in one exam, so more spread out exams.
Explain more in-depth certain power point slides
Great teacher. Maybe add a practice exam or more relevant mastering biology questions.
Maybe providing practice exams before the actual exam.
extend class time
Focus a little bit more on what might be on the exams, not word for word but succinct.
A little extra credit would be reassuring.
not sure, everything was done perfectly.
Possibly make a study session to make sure the information is solidified.
I feel that his method of teaching was a great method. To be able to see everything and have it explained at once was very helpful. Perhaps to have the class be more interactive would have been great.
Make things a little more exciting. He knows his stuff, not doubt about that. Maybe try and get the students involved in some kind of activity to encourage better learning.
He does a great job at everything, really. The only thing I could be bitter about is how much information we have to memorize. But that is expected; biology isn't a simple concept.
Great instructor
course was great
Maybe making the amount for the exams less because it is a lot of material to remember
He taught well, it is just a hard course.
The only thing that Professor Walguarnery can do to improve his course, is to shorten the amount of lectures in one midterm. Reviewing 15 chapters worth of material is insane. I'm pretty sure no one starts ahead; but either than that he's doing a great job.
N/A
Sometimes it's difficult to hear so he can project his voice a bit more.
He could slow down a little, or add more questions.
I thought the course was taught well and the work/tests were reasonable
He is really good, but his voice is so monotonic. He could improve if he add grace to his speech.
To not squeeze so many sections/chapters into an exam. It makes it difficult to study and remember everything to pass the test. Maybe have more exams every 4 or so sections so we can be able to retain more information easier, then lead up until the midterms and finals. I know most people probably do not like more tests, but it's very difficult to retain 12-14 different 30-40pages of power points. I think we'd be more successful to get better grades and actually remember the facts.
Great teacher nothing i can note to improve on
More tests rather than 2 huge midterms that covered so much material
Sometimes he tests things on the test that either weren't mentioned or not stressed enough. During reviews, a lot of the things he suggested we study didn't make up many questions. It would help if he stressed the things that were actually going to be on the test.
I think his course is already perfect.
Perhaps he can use simpler examples or use more video clips in his lectures for better understanding of the course materials.
He's a great teacher
He could have more than one review session.
More Videos explaining complex biological processes
The course it's self is a lot to take in and I don't think they will limit the amount of information. So maybe taking the time to go over specifically what's going to be on the tests because there is so much information and only 50 questions per test (excluding the final).
Nothing really. Great Biology teacher.
I enjoyed this class, I just tended to fall asleep a lot in lecture.
I feel like i did not get enough practice in between exams, making the nights before an exam more stressful. possibly assigning more home work would help the students commit the course material to memory.
Justin Walguarnery was a great teacher for this class, he was knowledgable on the material and kept the lectures engaging by adding a lot of information and not just read from power points. I believe he focused in on important points in each chapter and made a very overwhelming amount of material much more digestible.
More animated video to help understand the subject/topic, like where each cell/organ is and what is it's purpose. This would help a lot compare to reading from the textbook because I find visuals less complex and am able to understand better.
Give a more detailed analysis on the grading (i.e., class average, curve (if applicable)).
More clarity on hw dates
Better test reveiws?
n/a
Not cram too much info into slides
More pictures
He should provide a study guide before exams. There is so much information to know for just one exam it's very overwhelming.
Have practice tests before an exam
There is often too much material per each exam. The class in itself has a lot of material, but only 3 exams is rough for the amount of things we cover in class.
No mastering biology

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Tested us on things that were gone over in class. Made material easy to understand and related a lot of it to how it affects us as humans.
The clarification in the expectations of the course were clear and everything else in the class was pretty straight forward- no curve balls that the students had to freak out about last minute or stress on/figure out on their own
I enjoyed the videos throughout the lectures and how organized the presentations were.
I liked that the tests were straightforward.
everything!
I loved learning about the workings about the animal and human body. I also enjoyed loved when we went in depth while learning about germs--it was oddly fascinating.
His teaching was great and loved the pwerpoints they were very helpful
Learning about animals
How well he knows his information.
He posted the powerpoints the day before lecture
How he presented the information in a way where I could understand. He always had examples.
I liked how our questions on the exam were taken exactly from the power points and that the power points were available to us before class.
he speaks clearly and answers questions whenever someone has one, even during the middle of the powerpoint. he's very helpful and likes helping his students
The fact that he used real life example that the students see all the in Hawaii.
I liked that the powerpoints were as simple as they could be given the content of the class
The material was easy to understand and interesting.
Interesting tangents during lecture allowed us to remember terms better. Very interesting and powerpoint was displayed efficiently where information was relevant and not cluttered with work.
Interesting stuff!
Power points were easily accessible and concepts were explained thoroughly
I liked the videos that were shown in class, kept me interested and contained good information
The different videos showed in class
lectures
good lectures. posted power points were helpful.
I really enjoyed all the examples he gave of organisms that relate to the topic being discussed. It makes what we're learning more interesting.
The power points intrigued me the most since I was learning so much and I could also look back to it in the future.
The lectures are really easy to follow and you really don't need to read the book as long as you properly read the powerpoints. Everything you need to learn is on the powerpoints.
I thought that the use of power point was very beneficial. The professor was knowledgeable and seemed to enjoy his work. He was straight-forward, professional, and understanding. I thought that the tests where reasonable and the online homework was beneficial. Show up, study, and get a good grade. No tricks! Great intro course!
I liked the whole set up of the lecture with having a giant wall projecting the powerpoint for everyone to see. I enjoyed listening to Mr.Walguarney teach because he seemed very confident yet very chill that he was easy to talk to and listen to.
I liked how the layout of the test exams were based directly off of the slides. It made things easier to study knowing that everything on the exam were going to be from the powerpoints. For some reason the books are harder for me to understand. Whereas with the powerpoints, text material is summerized and easier for me to grasp the concept of the subject.
The visual aids that were used within the lectures and how professor Walguarnery made the material easier to comprehend.
The information was interesting, the examples were peculiar, and the content was something that could be applicable to everyday thinking.
everything
just the knowledge that he had on certain things amazed me
Good grading policy.
I liked his lecture's the most. He cracked a couple of jokes here and there; and he's a pretty chill guy.
The teacher
Very informative course with interactive aspects (iClicker questions) and helpful slides.
I liked the videos and supplmental information that he would give, even if it wasn't on the test. I really like that the test is straight from the powerpoints because it makes it easier to study, and I don't have to frantically try to take notes on everything that he says in class.
he highlighted the main points of the chapters on the slides---exam questions came directly from the slides excellent teacher
The lectures are really enriching. Dr. Walguarnery extends his lectures to the practical usage of Biology in real life.
I liked the visual aids and videos.
The phylogenies, mainly how certain traits developed
The material was interesting although in a large volume.
Justin! He is a good teacher.
The lectures, I actually get into what my professor is saying and the concepts are interesting to learn about in my opinion.
Course material is very interesting, but there's just so much to memorize and the concepts are difficult to comprehend at times.
I like how the course is taught off of his power points, instead of us having to read the textbooks. The content is straight to the point and simplified so it's easier to grasp.
The way walguarnery simplified the course and made it easier to comprehend
I like how he made slides and he explained the slides instead of reading right off of what the slides say.
I liked when he showed videos that relate to the topics discussed in class
Learning about why the current state of the world ecologically is what it is and what we can do about it.
I like the fact that the test are based on the lectures, but the lecture slides start to add up when exams arrive and there is too much information.
Learning about animals and their environment.
The visuals.
I really enjoyed the lectures. I felt that they were thought provoking and very relevant to the course material. I also appreciated the fact that what was gone over in class was actually on the exams. I feel like some professors do not always have the tests in mind when they are speaking, but tat was not the case in this course.
The online homework.
I really liked how he had various examples for different slides, using other sources such as Ted videos and youtube videos that were about the subject we were learning and they were really interesting.
The power points.
I loved how professor walguarnery incorporated different animals as examples of what we were learning. He explained everything very well and always answered questions.
I enjoyed the class as a whole. Justin was one of the better lecturers I have had. He was clear. Gave plenty of examples and metaphors. I was confused very little if at all during the semester. I enjoyed his class so much I made sure I was in his lecture next semester.
The power points are very helpful
Information was interesting, but just too much information smashed into one semester. I don't know what to study for the exams because there is too much information that I won't know is necessary for the exam or not.
The power points posted on Laulima are very helpful in studying
The videos shown in class were very informational and helpful.

Walguarnery is a great teacher! He not only is very clear in teaching lecture but he is genuinely a nice person. He is understanding and considerate and wants his time to be openly known as a resource for his students to use. He is polite and considerate and I don't think he's just doing it for show. Awesome teacher.
Great class, hard material, would've been helpful to have study guides tho.
This class was incredibly interesting and taught me a lot!
He is a great teacher and wants his students to do well.
Best teacher! He's awesome and I enjoyed his class very much! Can't wait to take his next class!
I enjoyed this class and Dr. W as a professor
Overall Mr. Walguarnery is a excellent professor, the material for this class is just a lot to retain, and it is difficult for students to memorize so much. If there were more optional homework assignments to practice the materials that would be good.
A hard class, need to study more :/
Fun course, great teacher, but I wish his Exams weren't so tricky...the wordings throws me off a bit, but overall I enjoyed BIOL!
good teacher. very clear, gave good examples
I liked everything about this class. It's very easy and understandable as long as you listen to the lectures and do the homework.
I do like this course. But I would like to reccomend Professor Justin to maybe creative activities to get the students more engaged into the subject. This could really help the students get more involved and remember things better. I also want to reccomend that maybe he can give the students quizzes or homework worksheets in between tests. That would really help us prep for the exams. I do understand that the exams are based off of the slides, but then again there are enormous amounts of slides per powerpoint and can be very overwhelming. By creating mini quizzes, activities, or hw worksheets ON TOP of the masteringbiology homeworks, this could really help prepare the class more for each exams and finals. Other than that, I like this class! Professor Justin KNOWS HIS STUFF. Iʻm always amazed and how much he knows and doesnʻt need notes or paper to look at to help him with his slides. ITʻS ALL BY MEMORY!! Love it. Thanks justin. HAVE A GOOD CHRISTMAS BREAK!
Professor Walguarnery did a great job this semester in teaching us Biology. I had him for 171 as well and would recommend him to incoming/ lowerclassmen to take.
He's a cool dude.
I would totally recommend taking your introductory biology courses from Justin Walguarnery. He's an amazing professor, that actually knows what he's talking about and he goes at a pace that every one can follow. The only down side to his teaching style is that he cramps together 15 chapters into one midterm and expects us to review everything by then. I also don't like the fact that, that's the only thing he can actually grade us on. Besides homework, tests are worth 20% of our grade, and I'm sorry but i find that ridiculous.
He is a very good professor and knows how to teach very well, he also explains and further elaborates when a student doesn't understand a particular topic but his exams are a little harsh especially when he expects us to memorize all of the lecture slide, which I find a bit tedious and useless. Why should I memorize thorough information that possibly won't be on the exam and waste so much time on that? I think study guides would be appropriate for the class or an outline of what NOT to waste my time on not studying.
Maybe there could be like 2 free class misses where you don't lose points. Sometimes people get sick, and don't want to be dishonest and give someone else their iClicker to get the points for them.
i enjoyed not having to struggle listening to you teach the material
This is the best lecture class I have, so far, at UHM. The university should hire more university professors like Dr. Walguarnery. He really knows what he is teaching.
I learned a lot from this course but the amount of information was kind of overbearing
Intense amount of material to learn over the course of the semester. Does not quite allow for really retaining material, but simply memorizing until after exam.
He is a good speaker and has good knowledge of course material. His powerpoints were helpful in breaking down the massive amount of material we needed to learn for the course.
I like the teacher and his teaching. Problem: I do not like the way the class grading system is set up. To much weight on only three exams and not enough wiggle room for other opportunities to display knowledge of the large amount of material covered. Having only three exams do not accurately display students true comprehension of topics. Also, by not providing an actual study quide and/or outline, this creates unnecessary stress for students. Solution: Have quizzes in-between the large exams to help students track progression and comprehension. This will help students know what to expect in the large exams and also allow students to seek help as needed by the results of the quizzes. I feel that it is imperative to have a study guide and/or outline to better prepare students for these exams. I feel that this is imperative in order to help maintain stress levels during and prior to exam days. I also feel that these solution will boost confidence in students and allow them to feel that they would be able to succeed. This is an introductory course. Mahalo
This is one of my favorite classes this semester. Walguarnery is a great professor and the success in his students should show that.
None
I thought Justin was an excellent Biology teacher. He really gets into details when explaining slides. Keep teaching the way you teach.
A+
I really enjoyed this course and I hope that I have Justin Walguarnery in future courses.
It should be curved grade.

Professor Walguarney is a great professor and always willing to help his students so that they better understand the material. Overall i would say he is a great professor.
Very helpful
Please consider the study guides so students can actually enjoy the class without thinking of failing the course.

Everything was fair
Nothing. It was great.
Some short youtube clips of certain behaviors would be effective.
N/A
Don't make us buy the book if we're not going to use it.
This was one of the best courses I have ever taken. I cannot actually think of anything. Justin used pictures, videos, his exams were fair and about the subject matter that was taught. He reviewed in class and was always ready to help out. The concepts were beneficial to my major and I would recommend this class to my friends.
Not sure why our tests were not given back in class. I know I could go and get it from his office but I don't think that should be required when there was plenty of time in class to hand them back and recollect. The feedback would have been useful to prepare for future tests. Also a textbook was "required" however would have been completely unnecessary /I would have been upset if I had purchased it, not sure why it was even suggested?
Since the class is specifically required for marine bio majors, it would have been nice to have more of a marine emphasis on the material. I also would have liked to turn in the worksheets for the videos and papers, just to get some more grades than just from exams.
Elaborate more from your powerpoints, I know this may be challenging as there are so many topics covered, but this would not only help us understand concepts better, it would also give students more incentive to attend class
Perhaps speak a little louder, there are times when your voice does not sound very clear, even at the front row. Especially when you speak while transitioning slides, the volume gets obstructed by the equipment in the corner.
Some of the lectures could have been less fast. I had trouble taking notes because he went over things so quickly and if I got confused I'd fall behind and miss a section/slide/explanation.
Honestly can't think of anything...
Great as is!
He does a really good job at teaching this course! He doesn't need to change anything.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I thought all the topics were very interesting and also was taught extremely well!
Everything. Walguarnery is an amazing professor. Although he can get monotone in the lecture, he cares and has so much passion about what he is teaching. He is one of the professors that really does care about his students.
I loved that the exams exactly reflect the most important material taught in-class. If you go to class and review your notes you will do well and I very much appreciate that.
I enjoyed all aspects of the course. His teaching style made learning a new topic desirable.
Very interesting topics. The evolution of domestic animals particularly. I even went home and showed the materials to friends I thought would be interested.
It is very clear and interesting topics. Video days are a nice break.
I really enjoyed all of the recent ecological studies that Justin would include in his lectures. There were really interesting lecture slides, readings, and videos that we watched. The sturcture was great and the tests were not tricky. As long as you studied and came to class, there is no way a student could not do well in this course.
I really liked the subject because it tied together everything that we have learned in previous biology courses and applied concept to real world examples.
Very structured, no surprises on the exams, videos were a good touch.
I liked having 5 exams and no final. I also thought all the material was really interesting. The sperm whale video was probably my favorite one.
Videos to illustrate/make stronger concepts covered in class
documentaries for visuals!
The videos shown in class were interesting to watch and tie into the material effectively. The reading assignments are also rather enjoyable.
The videos and readings were great but the textbook was a waste of money and that was a lot of money - I didn't use it at all and I wish I hadn't bought it (and I got good grades without it). Justin always put up cute creatures on the powerpoints and provided really interesting and engaging examples to keep us interested. It was great.
I liked the structure of the course, how the information was presented, and the balance between lectures, movies, and reading assignments. I also like that references to the literature were provided for most of the slides.
I liked that Dr. Walguarnery used examples that were captivating during his lectures. I also liked the video choices he used to supplement the lectures; they were very informational as well as entertaining and fun to watch. I appreciated that lots of the important topics/facts were highlighted in each lecture, either by different font coloration or by Dr. Walguarnery himself. I liked that this course was very straight forward and that Dr. Walguarnery made the subject matter exciting and eye opening via his lectures, photos, examples, videos, and literature.
I like the days where we get to watch videos. They are relevant to the topics at hand and interesting at the same time.
the class was well organized! movies that were shown in class supported newly learned concepts.

This class didn't really go beyond anything I had already learned in intro Biology courses-while well taught, it was fairly boring due to its repetitive nature.
Overall I really enjoyed this class and Justin as a teacher! He did a great job.
I truly enjoyed this class. Thank you for using so many pictures and also utilizing video in your class.
I definitely like the break up of the class into units and having an exam per unit. =)
This class has been very valuable in terms of providing useful information that I am using in my graduate research (mostly in helping me better understand various aspects of papers I read). I am very glad I took the course.
I would (and do) highly recommend this course for any biology/zoology major that is in need of electives.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Justin did a very good job in making sure all of our voices were heard but instead of just having the students submit a question, he should also try to conduct the discussion in a way that everyone who submitted a question HAS to ask it and participate in the discussions. I made sure to participate in every class but there were others that probably submitted questions (or didn't put much effort into reading/their questions) that will probably receive the same grade as I did despite their lack of effort.
As far as the subject matter chosen, I can honestly not think of anything. Outside material was given to give different perspectives and he was very open to people's interpretations and thoughts. Justin was always really welcoming to what we had to say, which is not that common. For that, I want to say Thank you. (mid-sentence capitalization pulled from Darwin to exaggerate :)). Other than that, visual material? - Which again, with the given subject matter is not the easiest. I wish we could take next semesters course on epigenetics, but that is already underway to being changed for consequent years.
I would have liked more recommendations for outside reading.
I think for this type of class, the structure worked perfectly.
Speak louder
This is a class about reading a book and discussing, so he does not need to improve anything.
I think that this class needs no improvement.
Sometimes the chapters are very long so it takes me longer than one hour (1 credit class) to read it.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Overall, I was very pleased with the topic that was covered this semester. I've always been a little interested in learning more about Charles Darwin and now I'm even more interested.
The small class size giving each of the us the ability and comfort to have meaningful discussion. Everyone could have a voice if they choose too - as the time was there. It was great to learn in this setting and made it much easier to feed off of others interpretations and ideas.
I very much enjoyed the set up of a one-day-a-week class
Darwin was a more engaging author than I expected.
I found this class to be very interesting and enjoyable. Great way to end my undergraduate!
Justin is a really good professor
Such an interesting approach to learning. I love the discussion aspect where I learn from other students.
I liked learning about the time period when Origins was first published. Justin is very knowledgeable about not only the biology behind the book, but Darwin's contemporaries and he includes some history in the discussion.
Its a must read for zoology majors, so I am glad we have Justin to help us along with this difficult reading.

25. Other comments:
I think this course offers reasonable course work for it's credit worth. Also, Justin is very knowledgeable in this subject (Biology in general) so it's nice to be able to discuss with him/pick- his-brain on some of these subjects. I would highly recommend that other students (of any major) to take a course by him, including this one.
I have recommended this course to several people already.
Very good teacher! Purposely chose him for a different class next semester because he's an awesome teacher!
I love taking Justin's classes. This is my third course with him. I think this university could use more professors like him. He is clear and concise about the material he wants you to know and he is a very fair grader. It is evident that he wants his students to succeed and he is always encouraging. You can tell he has a passion for what he does and it inspired me to work harder and increased my desire learn independently. I always highly recommend him as a professor to other classmates.
It would be better to be in classroom where we can sit in a circle.

Lectures were great, tests have been consistent with whats been taught in lectures
I liked the fact that the exams were not cumulative. This allowed me to focus on the material more in depth.
Class expectations were very clear
I took AP Biology in high school, so the information presented was somewhat of a review. However, Justin provided a lot of new and current information that added to what I already knew. The use of organisms as examples of each concept really helped me understand how it plays a role in biology.
Powerpoints uploaded to Laulima for easy access.
I liked that it was a straightforward class and that all the material that was presented to us in the powerpoints during lecture were on the exams. Having homework and iclicker as part of the grade.
iclicker questions and the homework
the homework
The option that the students are given the information (power-points) and that we have IClicker questions that makes us come to class to learn.
The prepared slides really highlighted important concepts covered in the course and helped make exam preparation much easier. The online homework was good challenging questions to think about the concepts from a different perspective than the lectures covered. Also the online activities where illustrations of process become animated really was super helpful in making sense of some of these complicated processes.
I liked the overall design of the class, where we learn through powerpoint and are tested on the information presented in class, rather than all of the information from the book. Not all newly learned knowledge is retained and by teaching the most important topics and testing the students on that topic.
He compared what we were learning in class to research that is going on in the world and so we could compare what we were learning in class with real life.
I liked that he put up HD pictures in his powerpoint slides. They were amazing to look at and it definitely captivated my attention.
Excellent course
nothing to say
The explanations were clear and concise
His midterm questions are taken from the slides in class or from what he says in class. No sneaky questions from the book.

The content is interesting, and I like that illustrations are used to explain a lot of the concepts.
How relative it is to the world around us.
simple lectures and great explanations non cumulative
I liked that the lectures were interesting and that the powerpoints were easy to understand. Also that whatever was in the lecture it is on the test. That made the studying part alot easier.
I like learning about all the evolution principle that shape our understanding of biology.
Clear-cut, no surprises. Somewhat interesting. I liked the way Justin Walguarnery would explain a lot of the slides which did help to better understand concepts rather then just reading them offline. I also liked all of the resources available if further practice & reading was needed. MasateringBiology web site was very helpful as well.
One of the aspects I liked in this course is the fact that Justin went straight to the point when explaining his lectures and so were his questions on the midterms.
I like how he taught the class, that he posted the lectures online before the class, and the examples with the iclickers that he uses
Learning things that I need to know for my major.
The lectures on evolution and adaptations was the most interesting
large lecture, good experience
Possible 5% extra credit for attending to class.
I liked the use if the iClicker in his lectures, it helped me see where I was in the class.
Dr. Walguarnery lectured well and made his points clear.
Prepared lecture slides and iclicker questions to further guide the main points Justin was trying to emphasize.
Lecture slides were very thorough
I enjoyed the use of the clicker.
I liked this teacher's laid back attitude and apparent interest in the subject, and you can tell he wants us all to succeed and do well
Being able to sit in lectures.
great instructor, he is very knowledgeable about animals so he gives many examples about animals in his learning.
The powerpoints were all online and the iclicker questions made for good practice.
I like Biology in general so I enjoyed everything about it. I like the iClicker questions the best though.
I liked how the instructor explained everything that was going to be on a midterm and how the midterm is structured.
The lecture materials were easy to understand.
The material covered was interesting and presented in a very understandable way.
ICLICKER QUESTIONS and Masteringbiology, for the extra points!
I enjoyed the iclicker question Mr. Walguarnery provided us in class because it allowed us to utilize what we just learned in class and test our knowledge. It also gave us an idea of what an exam question on the specific topic would be like, preparing us for the exam. In addition, Mr. Walguarnery always explained the question after all the iclicker results came in, so we were able to reconfirm our choice or learn why we got the question wrong. I feel that what I was able to retain more of what I learned from the iclicker questions than from reading the textbook.
I liked the use of the iclicker for extra points and for help with ideas for what would be on the tests.
Straight and to the point
The iclicker questions were especially helpful in the understanding of class material.
The pictures, diagrams, and videos in lecture and in homework sets were really helpful in understanding the certain steps of processess like in DNA replication, Light Reaction...etc.
Justin is very consistent and his work is always posted for your personal studying.
The review before the exams.
The teacher.
I liked having review sessions before the tests during a class period.
I liked his style of lecture and was easy to understand
The instructor was very nice.
Everything
I liked that each lecture was posted online for reviewing and that the exams were based only on the lectures. I also liked that we had iclicker questions to help us see if we understood the material. It was great that the iclicker questions were extra credit, and getting them wrong did not count against our grades.
Lectures were on Laulima
I love the evolution aspects of this course.
I really like the power point presentations that were made available. They helped. The i clicker was a valuable tool, too. Being able to answer things like this in class helped to drive points home and reinforce material from the lecture. The fact that there was no point value assigned to right or wrong and instead assigned to participation made it even better. I think that this is a great way to get people involved without putting them on the spot in classrooms as large as ours. People are very self conscious.
The course is based on powerpoint lectures so there is nothing really to like besides the material in any chapters.
Powerpoints and his explanation for each slide
I thought the lectures were easy to follow and take notes on
The fact that the test are based off the lectures so it made studying for test easier.
how the tests were based off the power points and the power points are easy to use for review and studying.
asdfasdf
the cool pictures he spliced into his presentation as examples
how we come back to material so it is okay if i dont have it down the first time around.
Liked the powerpoints and the picture demonstrations
The powerpoints were effective tools for learning
I like the power points, they were easy to understand and got straight to the point.
-Justin is a very knowledgeable teacher who really knows what hes talking about and obviously puts a lot of work into the preparation for every class. I liked the mastering bio and also how we did not HAVE to show up for class every day.
n/a
He kept the class interesting.
DNA and RNA synthesis
Pictures on the PowerPoint.
I actually liked learning about everything that we went over this semester.
The section about evolution.
i love biology
I like the examples and illustrations the best. It allowed for us to relate the information we are learning to real life situations and experimentations.
The exams, straight to the point!
Everything was to the point.
Justin Walguarnery knew the material very well and provided key points to stress on for upcoming exams.
The introductory chapters because they are easiest
That he left a day before exams for any questions anyone had. He was enthusiastic about what he taught and always gave good explanations of what was being taught, especially harder concepts.
All concepts are explained in detail by presentations and orally.
he is always prepared and knows alot about the course material.
His teaching style was simple and to the point. He clarified confusion and he made it a point to emphasize important concepts throughout lectures. He told us what to study for when exams came around which contributed my understanding of concepts and success on exams.
The fact that he made Biology interesting, using many real life examples, keeping the lectures entertaining.
The examples he gave to explain different concepts were interesting, such as the bioluminescent cat
Clicker questions promoted participation. Interesting material and straight to the point. Also, lecture slides were posted which helped in reviewing and gaining a full understanding of the material.
The clear presentation of the power points. I also liked that it was easy to study for the tests because the questions directly correlated to the power points.
The lectures are easy to understand
The class was interesting.
I liked how he connected biological concepts to everyday life. It made the topics seem relatable.
learned new terms easy access to lecture on laulima
He had good examples.
He made the course easy through his lectures
The interesting topics that was covered made the course fun.
Justin Walguarnery knows everything there is to know, and is able to answer questions in depth to make sure you know what is going on.
I really enjoyed how clear Professor. Walguarnery made the material. There was a lot to cover throughout the semester but his lectures made everything really clear to me. I really learned a lot from him. He knows the material very well.
his slide shows
He emphasizes on participation, gets the class involved and is fair
He is very knowledgable, and posts the slides to laulima to review
I liked that his power points summarized everything you needed to know for the exams. This made studying very easy. I also thought that all the information was presented in a organized and easy to understand way.
I like biology, in general. I loved learning about the study of life. The material was inetresting to learn about.
I liked Justin's enthusiasm for the subject. It made wanting to learn a lot easier.
The explanations and the videos that shows the examples.
I liked the iclickers as a way to reinforce information at the end of class, and his illustrations in his powerpoints were really clear and easy to understand. Plus, he graded very fairly.
The teaching style was what i liked most about the class.
The feel
I liked the way homework was conducted on mastering biology, I also liked the visuals and examples used in lecture.
I liked learning new things that I have never known prior to the course.
Great flow with the lectures. He was very well prepared which helped a lot.
The aspects of the course that I liked the best were that all the aspects of the course were interesting and very useful to know. Also, the teacher is very good at explaining all the concepts and the definitions. The tests are also very relevant to the lectures and the material learned in class. So, the tests were not that difficult as long as I put a lot of time into studying for them. I also liked the using the iclickers because it helped me to participate and helped facilitate my learning. It is more interactive when using iclickers instead of thinking that this is just one of those boring classes that I would have to sit in again.
14. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
--
* Online homework was sometimes inconsistent and confused me * When passing out the tests the Professor has no help so some students get the test faster * I would have enjoyed practice exams
n/a
I did not like that the lectures were so long, yet the lecture had to be done quickly.
early class
What I did not like about the course is that the lessons were too fast. Walguarnery explained each one thoroughly but just the overall time went too quick and learning a bunch of information in a short period of time before the tests were a bit overwhelming.
There is a lot of material that is covered in this class. I wish it would have been broken up a little more. Test were every 8-9 chapters I believe. It would have been nice if it would have been every 4-5 chapters. Given us two more exams throughout the semester. This way more time could have been devoted to each chapter when studying instead of having to remember all 8 chapters on a 50 question exam is a lot of information to recall.
Only having three exams.
I did not like how I don't know how the grading system works, it not very clear.
iclicker
Nothing really, except that homework is a must for this class.
N/A
Having such a large class made it very intimidating to ask questions.
None.
n/a
His tests were set up for an advanced class rather then a 101 class.
The lectures were sometimes a bit boring, but maybe I only fell asleep because it was a morning class.
N/A
Nothing
The aspect of the course that I like the least is the broken iclicker program on some days...we couldn't do the iclicker questions :(
Interesting subject and the professor was really trying to communicate with the students.
None
Nothing he made the course difficult yet understandable and interesting.
I felt like there were too many technical difficulties. There were a lot of times where the iClicker machine did not work(not that I'm complaining, he gives us all points when that happens) and other times when we'd have to delay class because the cabinet was locked and he could not access his materials. Besides the couple times this happened I believe the class went fairly well.
Terribly slow at returning grades for exams with students with disabilities having to wait longer than those without. Students who took their exams at Kokua had to wait an additional week (at least) for exams. I would have liked three exams covering 6 chapters each instead of two exams covering nine chapters each. I feel like I retain the information better when tested on smaller chunks of information.
His lectures were sometimes boring. But for topics like that it is difficult to keep lectures interesting.
I disliked nothing.
Sometimes Walguarnery went over some material on his slides rather quickly because he was a little late to class.
there is no aspects of the course I liked least.
He tends to repeat what he says on the slides as he teaches us.
None

The only thing I didn't like is that some of the questions felt like curve- balls.
I did not enjoy the fact that there were so many people in the lecture. But I understand that it is something that cannot be helped.
The aspects of the course I liked the least was that for me personally I thought that everything was too packed, as in all the information being to compact and allowed me to retain all this information in such a short time. Also, maybe he could go a little more in depth for the study guide for midterms or exams.
None
The class was exceptionally well.
The course was dull at times because it was only lecture
The course was slightly boring at times.
I did not like the fact that we could not do our work ahead of time. The work was not uploaded until that time.
Learning about inheritance.
I didn't like the homework problems on MasteringBiology. Some of the questions were very weirdly worded and sometimes did not work with my browser.
N/A
Always running till the end of the allotted class time.
Class size is very large.
The tests weren't as easy because they covered a ton of materials.
not enough interaction with course knowledge.
It was too early in the morning. Next semester I will schedule a later class.
How I did not use my textbook at all. I spent money on these textbooks and they weren't helpful since his exams are based on lectures. Wasted money on the books, should have returned them but required the mastering biology code.
HW and examples are all online. Some in-book problems would be good.
The professor was not easily available to answer questions and didn't respond to emails in a timely manner if at all. Given the large class size and not the opportunity to ask too many questions in the class itself, I think its important for the professor to respond to emails on a regular basis.
I love the class in general I have nothing negative to say.
Monotone when speaking in lecture. Hard to focus sometimes.
It was way too early in the morning. The class is always packed and I was deterred from going to lecture because there was mostly no seating.
the lectures were long and hard to follow at times.
none
The material itself was the best.
None.
the lecture, its so boring
Well nothing really was bad about this class...
nothing
i-Clicker! I always forgot mine. The i-Clicker is Walguarnery's way of seeing who all attended class, so I could be there but since I'd forgotten my i-Clicker, I would be counted as absent.
Just the fact that there's so many students!
Nothing in particular. The lecture hall was uncomfortable.
too big
A lot of information to memorize for the exam
I felt that some of the exam question were poorly worded and difficult to understand.
His exams are a little hard, and doesn't test on concepts, but only on specific information.
The Mastering bio homework. Hard to remember to complete them!
Nah, it was pretty good.
I disliked how some of the homework was difficult and different from what was on the exam.
there wasn't anything that i didn't like
It is very boring.
none
HIs voice is pretty monotonic, so lectures can get boring easily.
I would've liked more visual examples, maybe animations in order to explain the concepts.
Some slides were too long to follow.
There was nothing i didnt dislike
Not many grades, him not being consistent with posting homework
your voice is sometimes monotone so it gets boring at times.
None
I wouldn't say that I didn't like mastering biology. I thought it could have been more useful. Some of the questions in my opinion were not related to the study material. Especially toward the parts about Darwin and Natural Selection. In the beginning they were great but as the semester went on the questions started to go away from the lectures.
no study guides
I didn't find Homework on MasteringBiology helpful some of the time because there ended up being homework problems of topics that we weren't responsible for knowing for the exams and wasn't on lecture slides.
I didn't really have any
I enjoyed all aspects of this course.
Biology is a difficult subject for me but I think the professor teaches it very well so there is nothing i did not like.
Nothing at the moment.
There is a lot of information for this course that it becomes a bit overwhelming at times.
I didn't like how it wasn't very interactive, I know that a lecture is difficult to add participation in but its better if students are more comfortable with asking questions during lecture
the way his exam questions are worded.
There were no aspects of the course that I disliked.
nothing. My tuition was not poorly spent. It was worth every penny.
Sometimes the lectures were dry, also use of a laser pointer may have been helpful when pointing to things in the powerpoint in front of the class.
n/a
I don't like how there is so much material to study for.
Nothing specific that I didn't like, except that it was early!
n/a
I liked everything about the class.
When the iclicker didn't work.
boring ish
What I like the least was when we or a next your professor tried to ask us questions however students weren't really motivated to participate in the lectures.
Tests.
Nothing to not like. It was a basic course and he taught the material really well.
Some concepts where left unclear, difficult.
I didn't like the iClicker questions, only because they seemed a lot harder than the information that we learned before. They're supposed to be learning checks, but I didn't know the answers to a lot of them. But I do like having learning checks in place. They make the class more interesting.
To much content for one test.
Cause the lecture was so big, it was hard to see and hear from the back of the room, and sometimes the microphone or i-clicker wasn't working...and the slides went to fast... I didn't really like how it took forever to get our test grades back..
I didn't feel like I could go to the instructor if I wanted clarification about certain topics.
That it was VERY power point based. I understand that with 300 students you have to rely on a projection system, but he had a hard time stepping away from the power point and interacting with us.
The assigned homeworks.
The early class time was unfavorable because many students are not awake yet at 8:30. Perhaps a later time would be better.
I least liked the discussion on meiosis and all those processes.
There weren't any apsects of the course i did not enjoy.
I did not like how distracting the lecture hall could be at times.
the trick multiple choice questions on the exams
n/a
I didn't like the homework part of the course. I didn't think it was very helpful. It was just something to get done by the due date.
N/A
None
Although the powerpoints were the method by which Justin taught, I felt that he could've made the powerpoints more interesting with the addition of videos.
None
Posting the lectures on Laulima were great because I would print them out and take notes on it during class. However, towards the end of the semester the lectures were posted late, right before class so I did not get a chance to print them out.
He's just really monotone so lectures are a little boring. I took the 830 class this semester and fell asleep a few times. Can't really help it, it's the register of his voice
Although lectures can get a bit monotonous, there wasn't anything that I didn't like from this course.
I did not like that some things were covered in much greater detail than other things that were just as complicated.
I didn't like how he wouldn't post the powerpoints on laulima until right before the class or sometimes even after class was over since I like to have the powerpoint on my laptop during his lecture so I can follow along.
mastering biology online homework

He's very monotone. Very boring.
How he had extra credit and did the iClicker.
some of the slides were just repeated information
Mastering Biology homework.
He didn't have a TA. During exams, he passed the exams out himself. It took a lot of time away from the exam.
Problems with the equipment.
how much material we learn in such a short amount of time.
The class size is to big for the room. Students were constantly forced to sit on the stairs so they dont bump each other while they take notes. The test were incredibly difficult.
I didnt like that the second midterm had questions from the homework, and I think that the homework should at least give you 2 chances to get the correct answer before taking off points.
exams
Lectures were too long
Clicker questions.
I didn't like the review sessions. They did not help me at all.
Boring lectures
The tests were slightly difficult
the time it was at was too late
Sometimes it is hard to focus in the class and it is easy to zone off.
Sometimes students talking during the lecture was distracting. Every once in a while online homework problems seemed to have some glitches, an animation wouldn't load correctly or it was difficult to tell what was being pointed at in a figure, these technical issues impact our course grade even though it's not a matter of a lack of understanding of the subject matter.
too much terms.
There was nothing in the course i did not like; everything was interesting and important to learn for my future career.
The iClickr use for attendance was kind of annoying for me, my iClickr kept malfunctioning (even after replacing batteries) so many days I missed opportunities to get those attendance points.
the time limit put on some of the mastering biology homeworks
I liked the grading scale, although I think I would have been more happy with a curve.
Nothing really
nothing to say
none
One lecture per chapter. I felt like we could have stressed more chapters than others.
None.
Sometimes he forgot to tell us when we had homework.
There was just a lot of information.
100% Lecture
none
I would have liked more review before the second test, the material was more dense.
The test was pretty difficult.
none
He tended to depend on the power point presentations a little too much and he had a difficult time describing some of the illustrations on the screen without a laser pointer or yard stick.
How cold the lecture hall in Spalding was.
I think the powerpoints should be uploaded to Laulima earlier than the day of class.
Tests
The only thing about the course I did not like was the late time of the class. If I were to choose a lecture time, I probably wouldn't choose that time again.
the length of the lectures
nothing
It seems like the professor rushes through the material sometimes and doesn't take the time necessary to explain it thoroughly.
I wish there was more hands on aspects in lectures. If we had groups to \elp understand the material, and less powerpoints.
3 midterms, should be broken down to 4-6 midterms/exams
I didn't like that there wasn't a study guide for the test. Also I just didn't like the room that we were in.
The lessons on the cell and bacteria.
no comment
The strange noise in the building non-stop was a little distracting, other then that can't really complain. & some concepts were talked about really fast, but thats where all the extra resources helped out.
I didn't like that we weren't able to turn in homework late. I at least thought it would be better if we were able to turn in homework late and just have some points deducted depending on how late we turned it in.
the homework
I liked everything.
Tests of course.
labs, homework
Points are limited to 3 exams.
There really wasn't anything that I didn't like.
None.
Did not find the mastering biology homework to be helpful when it came to the exams.
It was soooo boring sometimes. The material is already kind of dense in parts and somehow the lectures would put me to sleep. I think they get monotone. I wis there was more enthusiasm, real life examples, humor, something to keep me interested.
Most likely understanding concepts.
exams.
The online homework does not really help prepare for the tests and the lectures are not very entertaining/attention grabbing?
Evolution.
I didn't like how much of a monotone the instructor has.
None
The amount of time it took to see exam grades.
The non-use of textbook
The course was alright and met with course expectations, etc. However, the class never made me feel enthusiastic about the subject matter, which I wish it did. Mr. Walguarnery doesn't seem that excited about what he is teaching. However, he did do a good job of teaching us the material and got us ready for the exams.
With such a big class, it gets hard to concentrate.
None
The test questions were wordy and confusing,
However, i wish that the review was more clear, less than half of the things gone over in the review are even on the exam...if it was more narrowed down to meet the test..then students wouldn't waste their time studying things that are unnecessary.
Lectures were sometimes boring.
I didn't like how sometimes the instructor didn't go in order of the chapter. He explained the information in a different order than it appears on the text bool. So it made it hard to keep up with the textbook readings.
The tests were very different from the material, thought I knew the material but felt on the tests didnt do so well
Too much material covered on each exam.
Nothing
I didn't like that we moved through each chapter so quickly. I feel that we didn't get to fully understand and grasp the the entirety of the information, but we're rather learning just portions of each chapter. However, I understand that it was necessary to move quickly because we had to cover a lot of material within a certain time frame.
Went too fast, too much info at once
Photosynthesis and Cell Resp
I didn't like the fact that the class, while interactive through iclicker, was not really interactive in any other way. It would be really cool if the classroom time could include more hands on stuff. I understand that there is a lab and the labs correspond nicely to the classroom content as it is presented, but what Justin in presenting has fascinating facets and could include some hands on stuff, too. Of course, i realize this would mean smaller classes, etc etc and that may not happen...just saying.
The way of how my professor talked.
There was nothing much that I didnt really like
the mastering biology homework
the way the test questions are written made it hard for me to understand what was being asked.
asdfasdf
the lab
how much specific stuff we went over was a little frustrating, i like more of the big picture.
NONE
I disliked how the lectures didn't ever differ in how he taught them, it would be nice if he tried different approaches.
The lectures got me lost sometimes and its easy to not pay attention but it was good overall.
n/a
He sometimes talked too fast during the lectures and didn't give us enough time to take note.
All powerpoint lectures gets boring at times. I feel like the class needs to be stimulated and involved more. Maybe add videos or stimulate a class discussion.
Phospholipid Bilayers
Grading system.
None!
That the tests were worth almost a third of our grade and homework had very little impact.
hate the part where we learned about chemistry but i know we had to understand it to be able to understand the biology portion
It didn't like the way the information for the lectures was presented, it confused me and I couldn't relate it to the other subjects we were learning. I also didn't like the review lectures for exams, he didn't tell us what we were supposed to study and instead had us ask him questions. How are the students supposed ask for questions relating to the exam when he doesn't tell us what subjects we should focus on the most.
Lectures got kind of boring but it's to be expected in a big lecture class.
I did not enjoy the non-use of a microphone. It appeared that the BUSAD microphones were stationary, if possible they should get mobile mics like in SPALL.
The chapters that require more memorization

The specificity of different cycles. That was the most difficult to learn.
he told us the test will be straight forward and directly from the lecture slides... however, it was not
It could have gone into more detail.
The labs didn't match up with the lectures
In the lectures I felt like the material became to dry, and I got lost
sometimes would go too fast during lectures
None
Kind of reading off the slides, but still important info
I do not like that the exams weighed so heavily on your grade. The first exam results were super delayed for some unknown reason, and didn't come until 2 days before the last day to drop the class...and if you didn't do so well you had to drop the course. I think there should have been more criteria for your grade, just so that if you didn't do so well on one test you wouldn't be forced to drop or accept a C at the best.
The problem with the course was that it was pretty boring. It wasn't fun to listen to him teach. He was nice though. It's just that lecture was boring.

The fast pace powerpoint lecture and the tests.
I actually enjoyed everything about the class, nothing to complain about.
Lectures
I didn't like the speed he lectured at because it was a little fast for me to take notes and also comprehend what he was saying.
The lectures were sometimes boring and long.
Sometimes the format of class got boring.
Their was no aspect of this course that I disliked.

Add more i-clicker questions. When Justin would go over the topics you thought you understood it, but when actually applying it to questions I would get confused. More i-clicker questions would have helped me determine if I actually understood the material as well as I thought I did.
Otherwise great teacher!!!
Keep up the good teaching Justin! You're a good professor. I like the way you teach and I hope all the other Biology professors teach the way you do. I liked the fact that you sent out the pdf document of what we are going to going over for class. It would be great if you could upload it all at once before the semester starts? My Chemistry teacher did the same with uploading a outline for our chem class. By doing this, I think it would be easier for us, the students, because we won't have to wait till the day of or the morning of class to see what we'll be doing. It'll give us a jump start on the chapters so we can be prepared in the sense. Although reading the chapter before hand is ideal, I think it would be a nice addition if you uploaded the pdf before the start of the semester so we can view or get an idea of what we're covering for that specific chapter.

Very good teacher, I would take him for EVERY Biology class if I had the chance. He can explains things VERY well.
Great class
I learned a great deal of information from this course, and I believe it would shape my future in Biology greatly. THANK YOU MR. WALGUARNERY!!! ã??ã??ã??ã?¨ã??ã??ã??ã??ã?¾ã??ã??ã??
Justin is a good professor and I would take another course from him.
Awesome dude with great knowledge in Biology and knew what he was talking about 24/7.
Really like how Prof Walguarnery went over the slides and didn't just read from them but put things in his own words, super helpful!
Overall, he was a great professor and taught the terms in an easy-to- understand way, and helped students with inquiries and questions.
Sometime the teacher is a bit monotone and for heavy lectures like gene regulation use more visuals.
I enjoyed the class and will be happy continuing biology.
I enjoyed this class it's just I wish that I did well on my last two midterms!
Justin has a lip-ring :D
Great professor!:)
GREAT teacher and I would totally have him again!
desks were not left-hand acceesable. hard to take notes on a right handed desk.

Great professor!
Great teacher, and a challenging but fun course!
I really want to thank Dr.Walguarnery for providing his extra office hours and helping on topics that I didn't understand or complicated topics. He provided thorough and clear explanation.
Great teacher, great class.
I want to take a class of his again! He's awesome
He is a great teacher!

Overall, Mr. W is a wonderful teacher.
Overall though your a great teacher.

I really liked the iClicker questions being extra credit. It helps us by paying attention and having an incentive allows me to make sure what is going on.
really good job! The lectures were very helpful!!

I wish there were quizzes for every 4 chapters or so because having 9 chapters to be covered for one exam is a lot of material to cover. Along with a lot of time dedicated to just this class alone. Slides were flipped through at a rather fast pace making it difficult to hand write notes.
Very handsome!
The course was really straight forward. The teacher emphasized the important aspects of the chapters.
Course is pretty fair and straight forward.
Justin is da bomb!!
Great course! I would recommend that everyone takes it from Dr. Walguarnery. I only had one year of basic biology in my freshman year of high school and I was still able to keep up in this course (thanks to the teaching).
I enjoyed the class.
I think he's a good professor and I liked the class a lot.
I would suggest maybe going over the slides a little more slowly on the ones we have to copy down, cause sometimes I felt I didn't get to copy everything, and then we stayed on a slide that we didn't need to copy anything from for a long time...Also, maybe watch the time more so we won't be rushing slides in the last minute. Also, maybe put the grades up more on time...
Justin is super cool, but he is very hard to relate to. When questions were asked he seemed taken off-guard, and answered them only on a very surface level. It was hard to form a 'bond' with him as a teacher. I know it was an early morning class and it was huge, but I have had teachers that go the 'extra step' in the past and make it feel like you're coming to class for a reason. His exams are literally written from the power points and very simple - which is fine if you dont care and just want a grade, but it makes it feel kind of silly to be coming every day and paying for a course where you could just stay home and read the lectures online. All in all, Justin, step out, show some personality, make connections. It will do you good.
The professor had a good knowledge of the subject, answered questions, and seemed to really enjoy his job.
Justin is a great professor and I thoroughly enjoyed his class. He appears knowledgeable and confident about the subject.

I thought the professor was really knowledgeable. Although he repeated alot of concepts, I thought he went through material really fast. I did like that he was able to refer back to previous lectures to help us review and understand the concepts he was trying to get across. He was a really good professor overall!
Justin was my first Biology professor. He introduced me to a lot of new topics that will help me achieve success throughout my college career. He's a caring, articulate teacher that cares about his students. I'm thankful for his knowledge and highly recommend him if you want to do well in Biology.

Great class. Went at a good pace where it did not bore people that already had a strong biology background but not too fast for those that have not taken Biology since the first semester of their freshman year in high school.
Good teacher for this intro class, would take a class from him again.
Dr. Walguarnery is very knowledgeable and explains the content efficiently. I like how he does not read exactly from the slides. Most times, it is easier to write down what he saying instead of copying text from the powerpoint. His way of describing the topic is much easier to absorb than trying to understand the slide alone. I thoroughly enjoyed the class, and feel that the concepts were well covered.
Great teacher!

Overall very informative. If i wasn't completely interested by Biology, I would fall asleep easily in this class though. Consider being more... engaging.
He is a great teacher
I would definitely take another class with this instructor again!
Professor is a rock star.
Keep up what you're doing! It's simple, easy to understand, and easy to follow.
The professor was very successful in presenting the material of the course, and he showed thorough understanding of the material.
He was awesome, but sometimes I lose focus because his voice drones on.
nothing to say

Great teacher! I hope he teaches other classes that I have to take down the road!
He's a nice teacher and was always willing to help with questions.
Needs to update great regularly.

Knows BIOLOGY very well
great teacher
The exams are a little bit hard for me because the exam questions seem to be worded differently from how they were taught in the lecture.
You should try to work on making a study guide and also your tone of voice. Your lectures are very interesting but keeping one tone of voice makes it very had to pay attention. other than that I truely like your lectures!
Awesome teacher. I highly recommend him for any student.

Include more iClicker questions during lecture.
My recommendation would be to possibly include questions from the homework on exams or eliminate the homework altogether because it didn't help very much.. Secondly, the entire semester made me second guess whether or not the material was sugar coated. I'm gearing up to take the MCAT in the summer and hope that key material was not skipped this semester! Other than that, Justin was well prepared and clearly knowledgeable of the course material. Definitley would recommend others to take this intro level Biology course from him!
While I can tell the professor made the way he grades the course so it would be easy for people to do well, I actually dont like the grading style. I think we should write papers as well. Basing so much on multiple choice is not really fair as sometimes the wording can be tricky, etc..
Wish there was practice exams.

Class was well organized and Walguarnery was always available before/after class and at his office hours for help.
Justin is a little monotone and boring to listen to, but his thorough and intense knowledge of biology clearly makes up for that.

Course covers a lot of material. Tests are much harder than what is presented in the lectures. Just a simple study guide of what to focus on would help.
Monotonous at times
Great job to Professor Walguarnery.
I think he is a great teacher! I love his powerpoints and how easy they are to follow. Since the slides are posted on laulima, even if you miss a day, you can still know exactly what you missed in class. He made biology really interesting and easy to understand. His class was structured and very well organized, but it was only not boring in any way. I seriously wish he was my teacher for all my classes!
Justin is super smart and able to explain the concepts in ways that are easily understood. he is a very good professor
Overall, this was not one of the better biology classes, I have taken.
He's an excellent professor!
GREAT professor. I have recommended him to other students. One of my favorite classes to attend.

Some of the lectures were unorganized. His voice is very monotone. While he does answer some questions, most of his answers are not detailed and do not fully answer the question.
It was good
Overall great course
He is a great professor and knows exactly what he's talking about.
The teacher explains all the concepts clearly and effectively and I can tell he is very passionate about teaching his students about Biology and its importance as well as its diversity in today's fast developing world.
I wish there had been more clearer outlines or study guides that condensed material more clearly.

6. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
At the beginning of the course, the professor made known what other fields zoology was used in and the importance of studying zoology.
I thought the topics we covered were really interesting and the amount of information given for each one was perfect. I felt like I learned a good deal about a variety of topics in Zoology without being over/underwhelmed by any of them.
The basic understanding of zoology
It's the first time I study zoology, it waas really interesting to study how life is complex and wonderfull. Mr Walguarnery well explain his classes and I was able to understand all of it even if I'm not bilinguish.
I think Justin is a good teacher because he explains well, so I wasn't bored in class even though the subject can be boring. And also, he is nice and willing to help the students all the time. However, I think he is not really sociable, at least in class.
I like how the information was backed by up to date research.
7. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Knowing and studying all the small details of the cells and organisms within animals.
It would have been nice to have access to the Powerpoints before the lesson in which they were presented. The lectures were so fast-paced that it was difficult to take notes efficiently and having an idea of what the Powerpoints look like ahead of time would have been helpful.
The lectures were dry. In my opinion the lectures could have had some more videos to help illustrate abstract concepts that were covered in the material. There must be some sort of videos that helped illustrate process better than some of the diagrams shown. Also the use of a laserpointer would have been helpful, because there was many times where the professor was pointing at the projection screen but it was not clear what was being pointed at.
The coldness of the room
The lecture room was too big for the class. The class was awfully quiet the whole session. I felt bad for Justin, he must have been discouraged while teaching. And also, I wish Justin tried to do something to lighten the atmosphere. If we were in a small, cozy room, the atmosphere would have been a lot better.

I know that there are time constraints regarding the length of the course but I would have liked more field research opportunities.
maybe add a field trip that has to do with fish or other animals. Definately keep the damselfly labs though, those were a lot of fun. (minus the mosquitoes)
Since we went to the stream twice, it might have been interesting to apply a mark and recapture population survey (or maybe it would be better to demonstrate with the anoles?). For the plant identification field trip, it would be fun and challenging to identify plants (that weren't already identified) with a dichotomous key. Also, the books given for the field trip didn't list any of my unidentified plants. Thus, it might be beneficial to use a different key.

22. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
One of the parts of the course that I really enjoyed was the field component. In lecture, Justin introduced us to various methods of carrying out an experiment(Mark-recapture,making descriptive field notes, using an ethogram to observe animal behaviors) and interpreting data (histograms, calculating the standard deviation and p-values, performing a t-test). In our field experiments, we practiced using these methods. Being able to practice what we learned in lecture helped me to understand the concepts better. Once a week, we would also have a class discussion on a journal article. I enjoyed these discussions because Justin would help us to understand parts of the article that were unclear about. We would also compare what we thought could be improved about the methodology of the experiments. It was interesting to see that all of us came up with different questions on the methodologies. That made me aware of some areas people might have questions about when I complete my own research project for BIOL 499.
The field work that was simulated by collecting real data and using it as a means to show how scientists collect and use actual data for their studies.
I liked how he showed you his work that he did for his PhD, and showed us examples of what kind of things to expect if you want to go on to be a graduate student.
interesting and fun field trips and activities in a small group.
The field trips were great. Best way to demonstrate field study work is to go out in the field! I also liked the fact that lectures were available for reference throughout the course. Statistics are my weakest point when it comes to research, but Justin's explanations helped make concepts clearer and more defined for me. I also enjoyed the discussion sessions. It cleared up any questions I had and brought up other interesting points as well. The small class size made it easy to have discussions and also made it less intimidating to ask questions during class.

I enjoyed this course. I would recommend it to other students.
I would recommend this course to all of my colleagues who wish to enter into anything resembling field research.
this course should be a required course for all science majors. the information taught in this class is very useful and necessary for upper level biology courses. I'm disappointed that I took this class in the last semester of my undergrad education. it would have been very useful if I took it earlier. this was a very fun class and I recommend everyone take it. Justin is a great teacher who is willing to help and answer any questions. this was the best class I've taken at UH so far.
This is a great course! This course should be a requirement for anyone interested in doing field research. In fact, this course should be required as a pre-requisite for upper division science courses that involve research. One of the funnest courses I've taken at the University!

22. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I enjoyed the excursions and Justin's explanations on the statistical methods. The excursions reinforced and allowed the students the opportunity to perform various methods collecting and quantifying data. For example, the trips to Tripler Stream allowed the students to mark and capture insects that in two different areas to determine the difference in the two populations. On another trip, the class was able to measure and quantify light measurements that were taken from the two areas (since light is suggested to have effects on the orientation and the amount of the species). Justin was also very knowledgeable of the various statistical methods that one could perform to determine the type of data one should obtain pending on the study. As a biology major at UH, I feel as though a lot of the undergraduate classes were not structured to apply these methods. Having a better understanding of how one would be able to implement these statistical methods, I am more confident on designing an experiment of my own for my directed research project. The peer-reviewed classic papers were also very important to the class. These papers seem extremely difficult to understand at first glance, however, through class discussion of questions that the class created, I am a little more at ease extracting important and relevant information from them.
I really enjoyed the Lab field trips!!!...Its not often we have labs off-campus. I also appreciate learning the different types of graphs and illustrations that biologists use.
I had a great time an easy guy to get along with
The lectures on taking data in the field, and later applying them during the labs. That was a great teaching tool.

Justin did a wonderful job teaching this course. I am very glad to have taken this field studies course because of its relevance to my major and employment goals. Currently, I am contemplating pursuing a masters of science degree (although I am unsure of which field it will be in). The statistical methods and hands-on experience with the at the different locations helped me better understand the methods and processes by which the scientific community deems acceptable and significant. Justin is an asset to this school and I look forward to taking another course with him.
Best summer class ever!!!....Hope to see you around campus!
I think the only thing that would truly make this course more effective is holding it during a term with a few more weeks in it. I believe that if the time frame allowed, this would be a very influential class for many people like me deciding on their career choice. Justin was an excellent instructor and has greatly increased my overall understanding of field studies. I'm certain that I will need to utilize the knowledge I've gained in this class at some point in my life. Mahalo nui loa!
