13. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

Emphasis on lecture, builds incentive for attendance. The iclicker questions in class. That tests were based straight from the lecture powerpoints. The format of the class which is power-point based is excellent because it condenses all the important concepts for us. I actually have enjoyed the entire course; all of the material is interesting and Professor Walguarnery taught it well. I especially liked the visuals including pictures and graphs. These were very helpful in learning the material. I enjoyed the iclicker questions. They kept me engaged in lecture, as well as help my grade. MasteringBiology was also helpful. It did not require much time, but was useful to review that week's lectures. I appreciate breaking lectures into two parts so that all the material is covered thoroughly, and nothing is "crammed". Having a proactive class with iclickers. I like how you gave us points for the iclicker questions. It was also very helpful. I liked how he got us involved with iClicker questions and his powerpoints were very easy to follow and study from. He was also very knowledgeable about the subject and easy to talk to after class when I had question. The powerpoints are available online, and incorporating the online textbook as part of our homework. I liked how the class was very interesting and that we learned a lot about biology. He's a good teacher and covers all materials on the test he administers His PowerPoints are always posted on Laulima. This helped when I was sick. I like his powerpoint and how to present information to us. It's easy to follow and he talks clear. the professor outlined the requirements of the course so effectively, I didn't have to do anything but study what he outlined. the lectures The powerpoints were very useful in summarizing the key points of the lessons. The optional iClicker questions were also good because it gave extra points if we answered the questions, so students had incentive to attend lectures. Mr. Walguarnery is straight to the point. I enjoyed that the lectures were always available on laulima. And for the most part, the review sessions were helpful I liked how this class is straight-forward with the lectures and the tests based on the lectures. It's just simple sit and pay attention. I also enjoy the bonus questions on the tests and the 5 extra credit with the iClicker. The rules and objectives of the class were very straightforward. The class was straight forward, no surprises. He explained everything easily. Learning all the new Biology terms and realizing how it was different from high school. This course was pretty interesting, and our teacher was enthusiastic about the material. I enjoyed the examples he used. Our professor explained the concepts well too. The grading system was very fair. I didn't like this course at all. I enjoy the use of the iClicker it's very interactive and gives me incentive to pay attention in class. He was very interested in Biology, this was obvious from his lectures and the examples he would use I liked how he really knew what he is talking about and the powerpoints were very useful. Lectures were very straight forward and simple enough to understand. The content was explained very thoroughly. I liked that the powerpoints were simple and he got right down to the points we needed to know and never went on tangents about things that we did not need to know. I liked the lectures just because I like biology. the iclicker questions How his exams are based on the lectures. The aspects of the course I liked the best was how he is well prepared for his lectures. The power point was very useful and easy to follow. I liked how he pointed which part of the lecture that needed a follow up reading in the textbook. Finally, the test questions were from the lecture power points which made it possible to understand the course without doing excessive studying and being confuse on what to study. The lectures were well focused and pointed out all that would be on the test and were mixed with enough humor and interesting facts to keep the information interesting and make me want to learn the course material. Material, instructor. I could review through his power points online. The lectures were very well illustrated an easy to follow making the class more interesting. Justin did a great job of clarifying any and all questions and would spend more time on a tpic if needed. the fact that he gives us extra credit for going to the lectures using the iclicker I liked how he had thorough powerpoints and iclicker questions to help us understand the material well with review sessions before the exam. The course was well organized and easy to follow. The Powepoints effectively highlighted the important parts in the textbook. Some of the iClicker questions were also a little challenging and helped to check if my understanding of the lessons were correct. all this was over all a excellent class I like how exam questions only came from the power point presentations. I also liked the opportunity for extra credit points through class participation and homework. I really enjoyed his power point presentations. They were informative and he gave examples pertaining to the subject at hand. The aspects of this course that I liked the best was that he always put his slideshows up before class so if I was to be behind on my notes I can turn to my powerpoint and continue on with my notes. Also, he talks clearly so it's a plus to be able to listen to and understand him. He always stresses on the next lecture the important key aspects that we really need to know. I-clicker questions and availability of powerpoints Lectures were great, tests have been consistent with whats been taught in lectures I like that the test questions come from the powerpoint, although that did not give an advantage to the students that actually attended class. The class is very straight forward and easy to understand. The tests. He was fair and never gave a question that was too difficult and if it was a difficult question he made sure to have stressed it during lecture. I liked that he posted all the slides on laulima for further study. I liked the fact that the exams were not cumulative. This allowed me to focus on the material more in depth. The lectures made preparing for the exam pretty straightforward, learned a lot. Excellent teacher, made hard concepts easier to understand The aspects I liked the best was the examples. I feel like the professor was really good at staying on track with what needed to be learned and when. I never felt like we were rushing and pressed for time. *everything you needed to know was on the slides * Professor was very approachable * Professor allowed opportunities for extra credit Class expectations were very clear Justin is a very professional professor. I have enjoyed my time learning from him. Learning in a lecture hall has been difficult for me, however, Justin's lectures and his method of teaching has been informative. I am looking forward to more classes from him. Dr.Walguarnery tried to explain complicated topics more easier so students can understand better and he gave different ways of explaining the topics. Justin knew the topics he was teaching very well. His grading policy was very fair. It was detailed and a good review of my AP biology class that I took in high school. I liked doing mastering biology online and the iclicker was helpful to use in class The professor explained everything in more than one way to ensure we understood the main concepts. He used very interesting example that would easily retain our attention to the sometimes long lectures. he explained concepts clearly. and what he talked about was actually on the test. The presentations were available online. Information were presented clearly. I really liked that he explained concepts thoroughly in clear and concise manner. The lecture was easy to understand and the materials were presented in a very understandable manner. I also enjoyed the fact that all the lectures were available on laulima. iclicker I liked being able to use the iclicker. The iclicker made the class interactive and made sure we understood the concept. I liked all the lectures the best, but particularly those involving biotechnology. how he uses iclickers to take roll iclicker I felt that I learned a lot of information in a compact way that was easy to learn. -organized -powerpoints posted -simple the questions for each lecture I enjoyed how thorough Walguarnery explained every slide and concept being introduced. How fast we flew by 26 chapters in one semester. Never thought it was possible. I liked the power point presentation for each chapter. It made taking notes easier for us when lectured. I took AP Biology in high school, so the information presented was somewhat of a review. However, Justin provided a lot of new and current information that added to what I already knew. The use of organisms as examples of each concept really helped me understand how it plays a role in biology. Justin is very personable. iClicker questions ! It was extremely interesting and a little challenging. I liked that there are many different ways to earn points rather than simply taking exams. I liked that it was a straightforward class and that all the material that was presented to us in the powerpoints during lecture were on the exams. Also, I liked that when using the iClickers, even though we may get them wrong, he still gives us participation points for coming. Good, clear slides used. The curve was very generous and really helped my grade. good powerpoints Lectures available online. Extra credit opportunities. I like how this classes grading is very lenient. Because this course is a very difficult course, I was glad the grading system was generous. I also like how you can get extra points with participation of the iClicker. He was very quick and efficient with his lectures. He was easy to understand. I also liked that he based his tests off his powerpoints so it was easy to study for them. Great teacher overall! simple ish iclicker extra credit. Having all the power points online. Being able to keep in contact with both teacher and lab instructor was useful and the reply rate of both instructors were prompt and insightful. I like how detailed his lectures were and how he explained some concerts more in depth if we didn't understand Grading System His attitude was always bright and he was always ready to teach! I liked that the subjects taught were straight forward and to the point. The explanations given by professor were easy to follow and understand. I like how he knew what he was talking about the whole time. He could answer any question and is very knowledgeable about this subject. All of it. Professor Walguarnery was great at giving lectures and his powerpoint slides were very fitting. Very reliable information. The information correlated well with the exams. All info was clear. I liked his teaching style. He didn't rely to heavily on the book, which is refreshing. His tests were very fair. He explicitly stated that all of his tests came from his lectures, and they did. There were no hidden tricks or anything and that's great. The homework also helped a lot too. The homework pertained to the topic and wasn't busy work, I would say it was a great study aid. The professor also gave more than enough time to complete the homework. I liked the lectures. They are straight to the point and they help me understand what I need to know. Very clear, lets you know exactly what he wants you to know for test. I like that he gave real examples of what is happen today in biology and he also did not lecture straight from the book which is refreshing. Also he disagree with the book sometimes to and it was nice to see that he was making corrections in his material when new discoveries have been made in the field. I love how when the professor presented the lectures he would always include picture samples or examples of the subject he was talking about. I liked the subject... biology. Slides were easy to understand! I liked that Justin was awesome! I liked how the exams were not cumulative and he explained ideas and concepts in simple ways that is easy to understand. I like how the course is simple and the concepts are easy to understand. Mr. Walguarnery was a very good speaker. I found his lectures to be very helpful and beneficial. Nothing Many of the lectures I found extremely interesting, he makes use of examples and portrayed the information in a good way. Powerpoints uploaded to Laulima for easy access. Course powerpoints were very helpful. Visual aids paired with lecture examples made understanding the content and the textbook easy. Dr. Walguarnery was very fair, always eager to teach, and very friendly. He seemed to enjoy teaching and that made me want to learn even more so. Also, having the powerpoints posted online was extremely useful! Professor Walguarnery knew how to communicate the information in a simple, understandable way, and could answer all questions proficiently. During the class Mr. Walguarnery was very clear when describing the principles of the lectures, as well as giving the class a better understanding of the content. The course was interesting because it covered a broad list of topics. Walguarnery was an extremely effective teacher in that he made the information relevant and understandable. i liked how concepts and new terms were explained in detail and were even backed up by examples, which made the content easier to learn and remember I liked the concepts that were being taught in the lectures Walguarnery is very clear and easy to understand in lectures. I like that we used iclickers in class. It helped give us points to add to our grade. It was also helpful in ensuring that we understood the lecture of that day. I actually looked forward to the iclicker questions of the day! The professor was a great lecturer. He made sure that we understood the concepts before moving on to the next slide. I enjoyed the lectures. They were well done and interesting. Everything was from the power point and you got extra credit in class just by participating with iClicker. The powerpoints he creates are extremely helpful Learning about how everything on earth is related in some form or another and that science is a working theory I love the teacher! The course was just relaxing because he gave a good foundation on what to expect for the class and how to pass. how justin was very clear when explaining difficult concepts. I liked the discussion on Biotechnology. Having the mastering bio homework helped me keep up with the course and the power points, illustrations, and videos helped further explain tougher material Helped when needed. All exams are based off of lecture power points. I benefit greatly from the lectures being online. I liked how well Walguarnery explained each slide, rather than just reading off of the slides. I liked being able to have a lab that went along with the lecture material. The course material made much more sense when there was the lab to back up the information being taught. I liked that he used powerpoints and they were visually easy to understand. Used engaging pictures and diagrams to illustrate concepts of biology. Effective communicator and displays knowledge of subject. Kept subject interesting to learn about. The lectures were easy to understand so when the exams came around, I knew what to study for and what to expect from it. I liked how he used the clicker questions to help ask us questions. The aspect of the course that I like the best has to be the lectures. Mr. Walguarnery made the information easier to comprehend and understand. I really liked how he posted lecture notes before class. It made note-taking easier! I was able to listen to him talk about the slide while taking notes of my own. The iclicker which is used for extra credit, and also the grade point scale. Extra credit was available and that lectures are posted on laulima. I like that the slides are online so it was easy to take notes while he was lecturing. He made himself available for office time and he stresses things that are more important than others. I liked it that he clearly stated where the questions for the test were coming from so that there were no surprises. Very simple presentations. I liked how the course was straightforward. No trick questions on the exams, and everything we needed to know was on the lecture slides. everything The presentation of the information including graphics and important terms bolded. The amount of information he shared as well as his own experience I liked that we had iclicker questions that helped us to understand what was being taught in the lesson. I also liked that the slides that he talked about in class were posted online, so that we could look back and study them. Last i liked the exams were directly based on the slides that we learned in class and that he would have a review session to prepare us for the exam and answer questions we had. Very knowledgable and clear teacher. Review sessions in class before exam day was very helpful because it helped to focus on what topics and concepts to focus on. It was also helpful to review the lecture slides at my convenience. All of the powerpoints were available online, so if we missed anything, we could go back and review. Also, the test were based entirely on the powerpoints, so there were no "surprise" questions on things we didn't learn. Dr. Walguarnery lectured well and made his points clear. I like learning about all the evolution principle that shape our understanding of biology. The PowerPoint was a great study guide. The prepared slides really highlighted important concepts covered in the course and helped make exam preparation much easier. The online homework was good challenging questions to think about the concepts from a different perspective than the lectures covered. Also the online activities where illustrations of process become animated really was super helpful in making sense of some of these complicated processes. He did a good job at pointing out the important materials throughout his lectures. He put his own spin on the information. He talked to us like he, himself, was in college, making it easier to listen to and overall more enjoyable. I liked how the instructor explained everything that was going to be on a midterm and how the midterm is structured. The content is interesting, and I like that illustrations are used to explain a lot of the concepts. The straight-forward lectures and tests. iclicker questions and the homework Being able to sit in lectures. Learning things that I need to know for my major. I liked that the powerpoints were very straightforward. His midterm questions are taken from the slides in class or from what he says in class. No sneaky questions from the book. Pictures and explanations I think that the opportunity for extra credit was generous. I think that Justin was straightforward about being successful in this course. I appreciated the slides being uploaded to Laulima. He was also timely about returning tests, despite the volume of students. He compared what we were learning in class to research that is going on in the world and so we could compare what we were learning in class with real life. The organized slides. The powerpoints were all online and the iclicker questions made for good practice. One of the aspects I liked in this course is the fact that Justin went straight to the point when explaining his lectures and so were his questions on the midterms. the fun facts Excellent course Having homework and iclicker as part of the grade. He would thoroughly go through the powerpoints and take note of what was crucial to be learned from the lecture. The content was really interesting. The lecture materials were easy to understand. The lectures were always interesting, and I liked the setup of the mastering biology homework, which contained activities that would assist in answering the questions. The powerpoints also covered a lot of important information that was easy to follow. everything I like that we learned a lot about evolution, and how things evolved over time. It was a lot easier for me to study, but it also made it easy to understand what I would be tested on. I liked this teacher's laid back attitude and apparent interest in the subject, and you can tell he wants us all to succeed and do well How relative it is to the world around us. I liked the overall design of the class, where we learn through powerpoint and are tested on the information presented in class, rather than all of the information from the book. Not all newly learned knowledge is retained and by teaching the most important topics and testing the students on that topic. great instructor, he is very knowledgeable about animals so he gives many examples about animals in his learning. I liked that the lectures were interesting and that the powerpoints were easy to understand. Also that whatever was in the lecture it is on the test. That made the studying part alot easier. large lecture, good experience I liked that he put up HD pictures in his powerpoint slides. They were amazing to look at and it definitely captivated my attention. I like the fact that the instructor made it so easy to understand the material. I took AP Biology, and I've learned more from this lecture than I did in AP Biology. I also like the fact that the exams were based on the information on the lecture slides and not on the book. It makes studying less stressful. I enjoyed the use of the clicker. Prepared lecture slides and iclicker questions to further guide the main points Justin was trying to emphasize. Clear-cut, no surprises. Somewhat interesting. I liked the way Justin Walguarnery would explain a lot of the slides which did help to better understand concepts rather then just reading them offline. I also liked all of the resources available if further practice & reading was needed. MasateringBiology web site was very helpful as well. Everything was to the point. Lectures were on Laulima Great flow with the lectures. He was very well prepared which helped a lot. I liked how he connected biological concepts to everyday life. It made the topics seem relatable. Justin Walguarnery knew the material very well and provided key points to stress on for upcoming exams. I like the power points, they were easy to understand and got straight to the point. The instructor was very nice. The aspects of the course that I liked the best were that all the aspects of the course were interesting and very useful to know. Also, the teacher is very good at explaining all the concepts and the definitions. The tests are also very relevant to the lectures and the material learned in class. So, the tests were not that difficult as long as I put a lot of time into studying for them. I also liked the using the iclickers because it helped me to participate and helped facilitate my learning. It is more interactive when using iclickers instead of thinking that this is just one of those boring classes that I would have to sit in again. I liked Justin's enthusiasm for the subject. I also liked that it was easy to study for the tests because the questions directly correlated to the power points. The section about evolution. how we come back to material so it is okay if i dont have it down the first time around. I liked that his power points summarized everything you needed to know for the exams. This made studying very easy. I also thought that all the information was presented in a organized and easy to understand way. His teaching style was simple and to the point. He clarified confusion and he made it a point to emphasize important concepts throughout lectures. He told us what to study for when exams came around which contributed my understanding of concepts and success on exams. The pictures, diagrams, and videos in lecture and in homework sets were really helpful in understanding the certain steps of processess like in DNA replication, Light Reaction...etc. The feel I really enjoyed how clear Professor. Walguarnery made the material. There was a lot to cover throughout the semester but his lectures made everything really clear to me. I really learned a lot from him. He knows the material very well. The fact that he made Biology interesting, using many real life examples, keeping the lectures entertaining. Powerpoints and his explanation for each slide I enjoyed the iclicker question Mr. Walguarnery provided us in class because it allowed us to utilize what we just learned in class and test our knowledge. It also gave us an idea of what an exam question on the specific topic would be like, preparing us for the exam. In addition, Mr. Walguarnery always explained the question after all the iclicker results came in, so we were able to reconfirm our choice or learn why we got the question wrong. I feel that what I was able to retain more of what I learned from the iclicker questions than from reading the textbook. I liked the iclickers as a way to reinforce information at the end of class, and his illustrations in his powerpoints were really clear and easy to understand. Plus, he graded very fairly. The examples he gave to explain different concepts were interesting, such as the bioluminescent cat I love the evolution aspects of this course. I liked the use of the iclicker for extra points and for help with ideas for what would be on the tests. He emphasizes on participation, gets the class involved and is fair -Justin is a very knowledgeable teacher who really knows what hes talking about and obviously puts a lot of work into the preparation for every class. I liked the mastering bio and also how we did not HAVE to show up for class every day. I really like the power point presentations that were made available. They helped. The i clicker was a valuable tool, too. Being able to answer things like this in class helped to drive points home and reinforce material from the lecture. The fact that there was no point value assigned to right or wrong and instead assigned to participation made it even better. I think that this is a great way to get people involved without putting them on the spot in classrooms as large as ours. People are very self conscious. Straight and to the point The teaching style was what i liked most about the class. He made the course easy through his lectures That he left a day before exams for any questions anyone had. He was enthusiastic about what he taught and always gave good explanations of what was being taught, especially harder concepts. He kept the class interesting. I liked that each lecture was posted online for reviewing and that the exams were based only on the lectures. I also liked that we had iclicker questions to help us see if we understood the material. It was great that the iclicker questions were extra credit, and getting them wrong did not count against our grades. I like biology, in general. I loved learning about the study of life. I thought the lectures were easy to follow and take notes on The review before the exams. The explanations and the videos that shows the examples. DNA and RNA synthesis The fact that the test are based off the lectures so it made studying for test easier. ICLICKER QUESTIONS and Masteringbiology, for the extra points! Justin Walguarnery knows everything there is to know, and is able to answer questions in depth to make sure you know what is going on.

HW and examples are all online. Some in-book problems would be good. the trick multiple choice questions on the exams The course was dull at times because it was only lecture None Although lectures can get a bit monotonous, there wasn't anything that I didn't like from this course. I liked everything about the class. your voice is sometimes monotone so it gets boring at times. It was too early in the morning. Next semester I will schedule a later class. Just the fact that there's so many students! I didn't like the homework problems on MasteringBiology. Some of the questions were very weirdly worded and sometimes did not work with my browser. Terribly slow at returning grades for exams with students with disabilities having to wait longer than those without. Students who took their exams at Kokua had to wait an additional week (at least) for exams. I would have liked three exams covering 6 chapters each instead of two exams covering nine chapters each. I feel like I retain the information better when tested on smaller chunks of information. He's very monotone. Very boring. He tends to repeat what he says on the slides as he teaches us. His exams are a little hard, and doesn't test on concepts, but only on specific information. Problems with the equipment. none The early class time was unfavorable because many students are not awake yet at 8:30. Perhaps a later time would be better. HIs voice is pretty monotonic, so lectures can get boring easily. the lectures were long and hard to follow at times. The only thing I didn't like is that some of the questions felt like curve- balls. Nothing in particular. The lecture hall was uncomfortable. N/A How he had extra credit and did the iClicker. Cause the lecture was so big, it was hard to see and hear from the back of the room, and sometimes the microphone or i-clicker wasn't working...and the slides went to fast... I didn't really like how it took forever to get our test grades back.. His tests were set up for an advanced class rather then a 101 class. I love the class in general I have nothing negative to say. That it was VERY power point based. I understand that with 300 students you have to rely on a projection system, but he had a hard time stepping away from the power point and interacting with us. Biology is a difficult subject for me but I think the professor teaches it very well so there is nothing i did not like. N/A mastering biology online homework I didn't like the iClicker questions, only because they seemed a lot harder than the information that we learned before. They're supposed to be learning checks, but I didn't know the answers to a lot of them. But I do like having learning checks in place. They make the class more interesting. none How I did not use my textbook at all. I spent money on these textbooks and they weren't helpful since his exams are based on lectures. Wasted money on the books, should have returned them but required the mastering biology code. there is no aspects of the course I liked least. None. Class size. The class size is to big for the room. Students were constantly forced to sit on the stairs so they dont bump each other while they take notes. The test were incredibly difficult. There weren't any apsects of the course i did not enjoy. the way his exam questions are worded. I disliked how some of the homework was difficult and different from what was on the exam. The course was slightly boring at times. N/A some of the slides were just repeated information I did not like how distracting the lecture hall could be at times. nothing. My tuition was not poorly spent. It was worth every penny. The aspects of the course I liked the least was that for me personally I thought that everything was too packed, as in all the information being to compact and allowed me to retain all this information in such a short time. Also, maybe he could go a little more in depth for the study guide for midterms or exams. None Class size is very large. Nothing he made the course difficult yet understandable and interesting. -- Although the powerpoints were the method by which Justin taught, I felt that he could've made the powerpoints more interesting with the addition of videos. Sometimes the lectures were dry, also use of a laser pointer may have been helpful when pointing to things in the powerpoint in front of the class. A lot of information to memorize for the exam Learning about inheritance. I felt like there were too many technical difficulties. There were a lot of times where the iClicker machine did not work(not that I'm complaining, he gives us all points when that happens) and other times when we'd have to delay class because the cabinet was locked and he could not access his materials. Posting the lectures on Laulima were great because I would print them out and take notes on it during class. However, towards the end of the semester the lectures were posted late, right before class so I did not get a chance to print them out. Nothing specific that I didn't like, except that it was early! Not many grades, him not being consistent with posting homework The material itself was the best. I did not like that the lectures were so long, yet the lecture had to be done quickly. He's just really monotone so lectures are a little boring. I took the 830 class this semester and fell asleep a few times. Can't really help it, it's the register of his voice What I did not like about the course is that the lessons were too fast. Walguarnery explained each one thoroughly but just the overall time went too quick and learning a bunch of information in a short period of time before the tests were a bit overwhelming. I didn't like how he wouldn't post the powerpoints on laulima until right before the class or sometimes even after class was over since I like to have the powerpoint on my laptop during his lecture so I can follow along. boring ish It is very boring. The professor was not easily available to answer questions and didn't respond to emails in a timely manner if at all. Given the large class size and not the opportunity to ask too many questions in the class itself, I think its important for the professor to respond to emails on a regular basis. None There is a lot of material that is covered in this class. I wish it would have been broken up a little more. Test were every 8-9 chapters I believe. It would have been nice if it would have been every 4-5 chapters. Given us two more exams throughout the semester. This way more time could have been devoted to each chapter when studying instead of having to remember all 8 chapters on a 50 question exam is a lot of information to recall. What I like the least was when we or a next your professor tried to ask us questions however students weren't really motivated to participate in the lectures. Monotone when speaking in lecture. Hard to focus sometimes. I disliked nothing. I did not like how I don't know how the grading system works, it not very clear. I don't like how there is so much material to study for. I did not like that some things were covered in much greater detail than other things that were just as complicated. I didn't think it was very helpful. It was just something to get done by the due date. I felt that some of the exam question were poorly worded and difficult to understand. Hard to remember to complete them! not enough interaction with course knowledge. Interesting subject and the professor was really trying to communicate with the students. how much material we learn in such a short amount of time. I didn't like how it wasn't very interactive, I know that a lecture is difficult to add participation in but its better if students are more comfortable with asking questions during lecture None i-Clicker! I always forgot mine. The i-Clicker is Walguarnery's way of seeing who all attended class, so I could be there but since I'd forgotten my i-Clicker, I would be counted as absent. I did not like the fact that we could not do our work ahead of time. The work was not uploaded until that time. Nothing Mastering Biology homework. n/a Well nothing really was bad about this class... The aspect of the course that I like the least is the broken iclicker program on some days...we couldn't do the iclicker questions :( He didn't have a TA. During exams, he passed the exams out himself. It took a lot of time away from the exam. To much content for one test. The class was exceptionally well. nothing it was all good and strait forward. Tests. Nothing to not like. It was a basic course and he taught the material really well. nothing Nothing really, except that homework is a must for this class. Some concepts where left unclear, difficult. I didn't find Homework on MasteringBiology helpful some of the time because there ended up being homework problems of topics that we weren't responsible for knowing for the exams and wasn't on lecture slides. Having such a large class made it very intimidating to ask questions. None. The lessons on the cell and bacteria. The test was pretty difficult. Sometimes students talking during the lecture was distracting. Every once in a while online homework problems seemed to have some glitches, an animation wouldn't load correctly or it was difficult to tell what was being pointed at in a figure, these technical issues impact our course grade even though it's not a matter of a lack of understanding of the subject matter. He tended to depend on the power point presentations a little too much and he had a difficult time describing some of the illustrations on the screen without a laser pointer or yard stick. Sometimes he forgot to tell us when we had homework. I didn't like how much of a monotone the instructor has. It seems like the professor rushes through the material sometimes and doesn't take the time necessary to explain it thoroughly. How cold the lecture hall in Spalding was. The tests were slightly difficult Most likely understanding concepts. I liked everything. I wis there was more enthusiasm, real life examples, humor, something to keep me interested. I wish there was more hands on aspects in lectures. If we had groups to \elp understand the material, and less powerpoints. There was nothing in the course i did not like; everything was interesting and important to learn for my future career. exams exams. I didn't like that there wasn't a study guide for the test. Also I just didn't like the room that we were in. The iClickr use for attendance was kind of annoying for me, my iClickr kept malfunctioning (even after replacing batteries) so many days I missed opportunities to get those attendance points. labs, homework I liked the grading scale, although I think I would have been more happy with a curve. I didn't like the review sessions. They did not help me at all. Did not find the mastering biology homework to be helpful when it came to the exams. The strange noise in the building non-stop was a little distracting, other then that can't really complain. & some concepts were talked about really fast, but thats where all the extra resources helped out. Lectures got kind of boring but it's to be expected in a big lecture class. Went too fast, too much info at once Sometimes the format of class got boring. The specificity of different cycles. That was the most difficult to learn. I did not enjoy the non-use of a microphone. It appeared that the BUSAD microphones were stationary, if possible they should get mobile mics like in SPALL. I disliked how the lectures didn't ever differ in how he taught them, it would be nice if he tried different approaches. Too much material covered on each exam. Their was no aspect of this course that I disliked. n/a he told us the test will be straight forward and directly from the lecture slides... however, it was not Nothing hate the part where we learned about chemistry but i know we had to understand it to be able to understand the biology portion NONE sometimes would go too fast during lectures The tests were very different from the material,thought I knew the material but felt on the tests didnt do so well Kind of reading off the slides, but still important info I pretty much liked all of the course. That the tests were worth almost a third of our grade and homework had very little impact. how much specific stuff we went over was a little frustrating, i like more of the big picture. I do not like that the exams weighed so heavily on your grade. The first exam results were super delayed for some unknown reason, and didn't come until 2 days before the last day to drop the class...and if you didn't do so well you had to drop the course. I think there should have been more criteria for your grade, just so that if you didn't do so well on one test you wouldn't be forced to drop or accept a C at the best. none. it was great None Lectures There was nothing much that I didnt really like The course was alright and met with course expectations, etc. However, the class never made me feel enthusiastic about the subject matter, which I wish it did. Mr. Walguarnery doesn't seem that excited about what he is teaching. However, he did do a good job of teaching us the material and got us ready for the exams. I actually enjoyed everything about the class, nothing to complain about. Everything was by powerpoint. Possibly more hands on learning would have been better. All powerpoint lectures gets boring at times. I feel like the class needs to be stimulated and involved more. Maybe add videos or stimulate a class discussion. Photosynthesis and Cell Resp With such a big class, it gets hard to concentrate. None The lectures got me lost sometimes and its easy to not pay attention but it was good overall. I didn't like the fact that the class, while interactive through iclicker, was not really interactive in any other way. It would be really cool if the classroom time could include more hands on stuff. I understand that there is a lab and the labs correspond nicely to the classroom content as it is presented, but what Justin in presenting has fascinating facets and could include some hands on stuff, too. Of course, i realize this would mean smaller classes, etc etc and that may not happen...just saying. n/a It could have gone into more detail. The chapters that require more memorization The way of how my professor talked. The labs didn't match up with the lectures N/A He sometimes talked too fast during the lectures and didn't give us enough time to take note. I didn't like that we moved through each chapter so quickly. I feel that we didn't get to fully understand and grasp the the entirety of the information, but we're rather learning just portions of each chapter. However, I understand that it was necessary to move quickly because we had to cover a lot of material within a certain time frame. The problem with the course was that it was pretty boring. It wasn't fun to listen to him teach. He was nice though. It's just that lecture was boring. Nothing. It didn't like the way the information for the lectures was presented, it confused me and I couldn't relate it to the other subjects we were learning. I also didn't like the review lectures for exams, he didn't tell us what we were supposed to study and instead had us ask him questions. How are the students supposed ask for questions relating to the exam when he doesn't tell us what subjects we should focus on the most. Lectures were sometimes boring. He explained the information in a different order than it appears on the text bool. So it made it hard to keep up with the textbook readings. N/A None! the lab The test questions were wordy and confusing, I didn't like the speed he lectured at because it was a little fast for me to take notes and also comprehend what he was saying. the mastering biology homework However, i wish that the review was more clear, less than half of the things gone over in the review are even on the exam...if it was more narrowed down to meet the test..then students wouldn't waste their time studying things that are unnecessary. The fast pace powerpoint lecture and the tests. Phospholipid Bilayers the way the test questions are written made it hard for me to understand what was being asked. Justin has a lip-ring :D Dr. Walguarnery is very knowledgeable and explains the content efficiently. I like how he does not read exactly from the slides. Most times, it is easier to write down what he saying instead of copying text from the powerpoint. His way of describing the topic is much easier to absorb than trying to understand the slide alone. I thoroughly enjoyed the class, and feel that the concepts were well covered. I enjoyed the class. Overall though your a great teacher. Great teacher, and a challenging but fun course! Overall very informative. If i wasn't completely interested by Biology, I would fall asleep easily in this class though. Consider being more... engaging. I want to take a class of his again! He's awesome Professor is a rock star. none Overall, Mr. W is a wonderful teacher. I enjoyed the class and will be happy continuing biology. I would suggest maybe going over the slides a little more slowly on the ones we have to copy down, cause sometimes I felt I didn't get to copy everything, and then we stayed on a slide that we didn't need to copy anything from for a long time...Also, maybe watch the time more so we won't be rushing slides in the last minute. Also, maybe put the grades up more on time... Justin is super cool, but he is very hard to relate to. When questions were asked he seemed taken off-guard, and answered them only on a very surface level. It was hard to form a 'bond' with him as a teacher. I know it was an early morning class and it was huge, but I have had teachers that go the 'extra step' in the past and make it feel like you're coming to class for a reason. His exams are literally written from the power points and very simple - which is fine if you dont care and just want a grade, but it makes it feel kind of silly to be coming every day and paying for a course where you could just stay home and read the lectures online. All in all, Justin, step out, show some personality, make connections. It will do you good. Great teacher, great class. I think he's a good professor and I liked the class a lot. Although reading the chapter before hand is ideal, I think it would be a nice addition if you uploaded the pdf before the start of the semester so we can view or get an idea of what we're covering for that specific chapter. At the beginning of the course, the professor made known what other fields zoology was used in and the importance of studying zoology. I think Justin is a good teacher because he explains well, so I wasn't bored in class even though the subject can be boring. And also, he is nice and willing to help the students all the time. However, I think he is not really sociable, at least in class. I like how the information was backed by up to date research. It's the first time I study zoology, it waas really interesting to study how life is complex and wonderfull. Mr Walguarnery well explain his classes and I was able to understand all of it even if I'm not bilinguish. I thought the topics we covered were really interesting and the amount of information given for each one was perfect. I felt like I learned a good deal about a variety of topics in Zoology without being over/underwhelmed by any of them. The basic understanding of zoology

7. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?

Knowing and studying all the small details of the cells and organisms within animals. The lecture room was too big for the class. The class was awfully quiet the whole session. I felt bad for Justin, he must have been discouraged while teaching. And also, I wish Justin tried to do something to lighten the atmosphere. If we were in a small, cozy room, the atmosphere would have been a lot better. The coldness of the room It would have been nice to have access to the Powerpoints before the lesson in which they were presented. The lectures were so fast-paced that it was difficult to take notes efficiently and having an idea of what the Powerpoints look like ahead of time would have been helpful. The lectures were dry. In my opinion the lectures could have had some more videos to help illustrate abstract concepts that were covered in the material. There must be some sort of videos that helped illustrate process better than some of the diagrams shown. Also the use of a laserpointer would have been helpful, because there was many times where the professor was pointing at the projection screen but it was not clear what was being pointed at.

maybe add a field trip that has to do with fish or other animals. Definately keep the damselfly labs though, those were a lot of fun. (minus the mosquitoes) Since we went to the stream twice, it might have been interesting to apply a mark and recapture population survey (or maybe it would be better to demonstrate with the anoles?). For the plant identification field trip, it would be fun and challenging to identify plants (that weren't already identified) with a dichotomous key. Also, the books given for the field trip didn't list any of my unidentified plants. Thus, it might be beneficial to use a different key. I know that there are time constraints regarding the length of the course but I would have liked more field research opportunities.

I liked how he showed you his work that he did for his PhD, and showed us examples of what kind of things to expect if you want to go on to be a graduate student. interesting and fun field trips and activities in a small group. The field trips were great. Best way to demonstrate field study work is to go out in the field! I also liked the fact that lectures were available for reference throughout the course. Statistics are my weakest point when it comes to research, but Justin's explanations helped make concepts clearer and more defined for me. I also enjoyed the discussion sessions. It cleared up any questions I had and brought up other interesting points as well. The small class size made it easy to have discussions and also made it less intimidating to ask questions during class. The field work that was simulated by collecting real data and using it as a means to show how scientists collect and use actual data for their studies. One of the parts of the course that I really enjoyed was the field component. In lecture, Justin introduced us to various methods of carrying out an experiment(Mark-recapture,making descriptive field notes,using an ethogram to observe animal behaviors) and interpreting data (histograms, calculating the standard deviation and p-values, performing a t-test). In our field experiments, we practiced using these methods. Being able to practice what we learned in lecture helped me to understand the concepts better. Once a week, we would also have a class discussion on a journal article. I enjoyed these discussions because Justin would help us to understand parts of the article that were unclear about. We would also compare what we thought could be improved about the methodology of the experiments. It was interesting to see that all of us came up with different questions on the methodologies. That made me aware of some areas people might have questions about when I complete my own research project for BIOL 499.

this course should be a required course for all science majors. the information taught in this class is very useful and necessary for upper level biology courses. I'm disappointed that I took this class in the last semester of my undergrad education. it would have been very useful if I took it earlier. this was a very fun class and I recommend everyone take it. Justin is a great teacher who is willing to help and answer any questions. this was the best class I've taken at UH so far. This is a great course! This course should be a requirement for anyone interested in doing field research. In fact, this course should be required as a pre-requisite for upper division science courses that involve research. One of the funnest courses I've taken at the University! I would recommend this course to all of my colleagues who wish to enter into anything resembling field research. I enjoyed this course. I would recommend it to other students.

I would have liked to learn more about the techniques of capturing or the use of the tools used in biological fields. overall a great teacher was a little quite in speaking though Concepts involving physiology were great, but I think a little more help or information on sampling on the field would be very beneficial. I really enjoyed the Lab field trips!!!...Its not often we have labs off-campus. I also appreciate learning the different types of graphs and illustrations that biologists use. I had a great time an easy guy to get along with The lectures on taking data in the field, and later applying them during the labs. That was a great teaching tool. I enjoyed the excursions and Justin's explanations on the statistical methods. The excursions reinforced and allowed the students the opportunity to perform various methods collecting and quantifying data. For example, the trips to Tripler Stream allowed the students to mark and capture insects that in two different areas to determine the difference in the two populations. On another trip, the class was able to measure and quantify light measurements that were taken from the two areas (since light is suggested to have effects on the orientation and the amount of the species). Justin was also very knowledgeable of the various statistical methods that one could perform to determine the type of data one should obtain pending on the study. As a biology major at UH, I feel as though a lot of the undergraduate classes were not structured to apply these methods. Having a better understanding of how one would be able to implement these statistical methods, I am more confident on designing an experiment of my own for my directed research project. The peer-reviewed classic papers were also very important to the class. These papers seem extremely difficult to understand at first glance, however, through class discussion of questions that the class created, I am a little more at ease extracting important and relevant information from them.

Best summer class ever!!!....Hope to see you around campus! I think the only thing that would truly make this course more effective is holding it during a term with a few more weeks in it. I believe that if the time frame allowed, this would be a very influential class for many people like me deciding on their career choice. Justin was an excellent instructor and has greatly increased my overall understanding of field studies. I'm certain that I will need to utilize the knowledge I've gained in this class at some point in my life. Mahalo nui loa! Justin did a wonderful job teaching this course. I am very glad to have taken this field studies course because of its relevance to my major and employment goals. Currently, I am contemplating pursuing a masters of science degree (although I am unsure of which field it will be in). The statistical methods and hands-on experience with the at the different locations helped me better understand the methods and processes by which the scientific community deems acceptable and significant.
