13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

He knows his subject very well and his techniques help a lot to understand and solve math problems better. He knows the subject well so when he is teaching it is easy to understand. His method is always the easiest way to solve problems. He actually sits down and explains what you did wrong and helps you fix it. Very very very helpful always here to assist you in anything. Very personable and friendly. He knows math really well and understands all the concepts He really knows and loves math. He's good at taking time and explaining things so that you have full understanding of the problem. He knows what he is talking about and he cares about his students Evan is a very good at explaining problems. He's one of the few math teachers i've had that actually seem to enjoy their job and enjoy teaching. He always has a way of explaining things very well, I'm not good in math so this helps a lot! Evan Yoshimura's strength as a teacher is the clarity of instructions and flexibility of providing help with students. Step by step instructions was very effective and show enthusiasm as a math professor. Taking the time out to explain a problem that I am struggling on no matter how long it takes. As a teacher he is extremely knowledgeable in the subject matter and tries to explain to students that proper steps to solve the math problems as well as the orders of operation. He explains to you that writing your problems side by side will confuse you as the problems get harder and longer to solve. Is very diligent in emailing students to communicate when needed. He is very organized with his class schedule but allows each student to go at a pace that they're comfortable with. He shows concern when he feels that a student may be falling behind in their work and encourages students to attend class. He is clear in his explanations and offers even more help if a student needs it. Evan Yoshimura has the ability to lecture with clear information and solutions. His willingness to come back down to a level for those that are moving slower than others is without hesitation. He has obvious tremendous strengths in the math trade which stands out when he lectures. Knows subject matter Is an understanding and patient person Teach well They way he describes the way to do the material. He encourages you to get everything done on time. He's also very helpful when it comes to not understanding certain problems. Being able to teach the subject to students who's skills aren't towards math and being able to adjust to the different learning styles the students have.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

None. none none. Lab hours as part of the grade None, if you don't understand something he's more than willing to take time to explain it. If there are a few people that have the same question, he does a mini lecture for the class. nothing I'm just sad he doesn't teach math 100 :( None at all for math 24. nothing. No changes need to be made, very grateful to have Math 24 and Math 25 combined and extremely satisfied with My Math Lab. Maybe to be able to do more undivided tutoring. none The class room is to noisy. I understand this is the best way of teaching. But it can get noisy in that class at times. None. N/A

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

I loved to get emails letting me know how I was doing during the semester. That helped me stay on track and made me feel like I was making progress. The portfolio checks he did every once in a while. Which really helped me because it made me realize how to move on subjects on so on. he would talk to them every class He sets goals for them and helps them finish on time. He emailed his students when they would fall behind He took time on an individual basis to go over your portfolio and your progress. He took time one on one to explain any questions you had about the course, materials or problems. He would talk to us and have meetings with us weekly and talk about how we are doing in the class. He is also very encouraging. he emails and notifies students and encourages students to push further. He was always on top of his emails, if someone asked a question he would always reply. He was great about being accessible to everyone in class no matter what lesson they were on, even if he had explained the lesson to someone else just previously! He's very helpful. Evan Yoshimura put time in to getting with students one by one on progress in class and strategies to get through the class. He would demonstrate different ways to solve a problem for every student so that he/she would understand the steps and procedures to solve a problem correctly. When he sees a student having a problem he is more than willing to help the student and explain different methods for solving the math problem as not any one student is alike. He constantly updates each student on how they are performing in class and what is expected of them. He wants the best for his students and wants them to succeed in class. He takes the time out to figure out what works best for the individual and then supports it. emailed student if he was concerned Ask question Constantly checked up on students to see if they needed help. I guess when he emails every student on what they need to finish and the option to do something when they don't finish on time. By making sure we understand the subjects and going around checking up on each of the students to make sure we're doing okay or if we need any help/clarification.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

I would highly recommend Evan since he is a very fair professor and his Math techniques are great. Yes. He makes things easier. I think that is the most important part in Math. I would, he was a great teacher and really helped me. Yes! Because he is very friendly and helpful! He knows his math and all the formulas Yes, for all the reasons I stated above. He always takes the time to help and answer any questions. yes, he is a very good teacher and he is very approachable. Yes because he's very familiar in his field of study. Yes, he explains the material well and knows his stuff. He makes sure you know what you did wrong and will go over any test questions with you one on one. I would HIGHLY positively recommend Evan Yoshimura to any math student. I finally passed math 24 after taking it twice with other professors and made it through nice and smooth. I would recommend Prof. Yoshimura to other students because he would take the time out of whatever he is doing and help you out. I would definitely recommend him to fellow students to enroll in his class. He is patient and wants his students to succeed and use the tools he has given them in order to do so. Yes I would. The class work isn't too difficult but you must push yourself to actually get the work done. He offers help to anyone that asks for it and never makes you feel bad for asking in the first place. Absolutely, I truly believe many can learn with clear understandings from him. yes, because he is easy to get along with, and understand. Yes. Good class Yes because he is a great teacher who explains the material clearly and cares for his students. Yes because he's very helpful with problems you don't understand and he encourages students to finish on time. Definitely! I don't consider myself very skilled at math and yet I was able to learn under him.

He is awesome. Best Math teacher ever. Nothing. He was a really nice guy n/a n/a He's thorough and helpful. He makes problems that seem impossible to solve easy. I use to hate math but now I find myself looking forward to solving new problems. nothing Great teacher! 18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?

His techniques and lectures. He makes every problem sound easy and gives insight to different ways to solve problems. His mini lectures. Even it is a "mini" lecture, he made everything easy to understand. The fact that he helped me and didn't just say what I did wrong. That he set goals for me. His skill level of math His willingness to take time to help on a one on one basis. He would keep helping you until you understand and he's nice His eagerness and love for the subject really shows in how he explains things. His tone is a good one for the subject, it's hard to keep concentrated in math if the teacher sounds like a robot for me at least and I didn't have this problem in his class :) He gives, feedback, very clear instructions, tricks to get through some tough math problems, and he's there for help at anytime during math lab hours and in class. Also give us monitors on our progress to see what strategies and options to be done to get through math 24 nice and smooth. He would give half credit to problems we got wrong but knew what we were doing. Available to his students whether in person or by email Follow a schedule, stay organized, and always show your work. He doesn't put unnecessary pressure on me. His passion and expertise translate well into his classroom making it an enjoyable atmosphere. Class is paced well. How he constantly checks up on students to see if they need help. His teaching. A qualified teacher is a very valuable, especially in a subject that half and half may or may not understand. Being able to teach it to students who aren't gifted with math skills to where they can understand is VERY helpful!

19. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.

The class meets 2 hours a week. There are 22 self-pacing students and one instructor. Evan is handling it very well but sometimes he's sticking to someone for a long time which makes me hard to answer questions (Because the class period is only one hour). If some one is lagging behind then try and set modules for them if you think they need it. n/a No math labs hours and binder sheck as part of grade I think it's great the way it is. nothing I enjoyed the course and understood his teaching so no suggestions. NONE nothing None None There should be a quiet study area and question and answer area, maybe one class room dedicated to homework and another to testing. Or I will just bring an ear plug next time. It is just a suggestion. Its ok, I would keep the class room the way it is. None. N/A

20. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....

He is the best. If you want to learn Math, he is the instructor to learn from. Great and helpful teacher. great teacher doing a good job! He is a good teacher who knows his subject I would highly recommend him as a teacher and I would recommend the self paced class to anyone who has enough discipline to stay on task. AWESOME Grade "A" :) or for his class Credit as oppossed to no credit :) Great professor, so far for math because it is my weakest subject, he guided me all the way through math 24. Great class was easy to understand. Great instructor and easy to understand I would like to be able to have Evan Yoshimura as my teacher for all my math classes to come. excellent Great A great teacher who explains the material clearly and shows concern for his students. VERY helpful and VERY awesome teacher!!

21. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

The fact that I could make progress at home, work at my own pace, and have Evan available to answer my questions or giving us lectures when needed. The Math Lab system. It is easy to understand how well you are doing and setting goals. The fact that it was self paced. online course move at my own speed! n/a math is math That I can login and work on math anytime. I work full time so to be able to do math at a time that works for me is what I'm looking for. I don't like math The self paced aspect, I liked being able to be ahead and take my time in the sections I needed to. My math lab was a pace learning material, and it's very repeatitional. and views examples of the material givin and Evan is there to help with anything. He would always ask if we would want a review before a test. Like that Math 24 and Math 25 are combined as well as having My Math Lab available. pretty much all of them neutral na None specifically. Being able to retake the tests when scoring low. I hate math in general, but I was able to laugh at my silly and simple mistakes rather than frustrating myself about them.

22. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

Nothing. The large amount of homework, i think it should be 2 pieces of homework to a test. n/a I didnt like having to go in to labs and folder checks None. taking module tests only in class :p Moving on to the next math?? Hopefully the teacher is just as good Some modules had too many questions and sections. The timing 7:45-9:00 was a hard time for me to wake up for but I still managed to stay on course. the word problems Math in general. na None specifically. Just the few chapters I'm barely able to understand even with help from the teacher or anyone for that matter.

Emails you when you are behind & always keeps you updated with your work & tests. Checks up on them He possesses strong knowledge on his course material and acknowldeges students to do good in his class so that everyone may pass. I like how he cares for us individually and makes sure we do our work and understand the course. Wants to get the students to past the module as best they can. integrity, compassion and a deep desire to see his and all students accomplish their goals he knows the subject He has the patience to help his students. He never fails to remind us about important things of the course. His main strengths is that he explains math very well. I am able to ask a question and he takes time to teach me the solutions. He helped them when students needed help understanding the problem. Emails He emails and notifies us everytime that the deadline is always near, and that we should do us much work as we can and finish up. I like his concern for us individually. His helpers in the lab are very nice and also helps us on the course material. N/A always helping them including myself, wants to see students pass, but mentoring them on right study habits, sympathizes with parent/ full time job students, does his best to try and accomdate them within reason. returns emails promptly with clear and precise guidance to the nature of the problem. keep us updated with lap hours, and reminding of the due dates He give considerations and take time to check if I'm eligible to receive partial credit with my work. He always give useful tips and advices on how to improve my level He would be flexible in helping all his students. If he notices someone struggling he provides assistance. He showed concern that math isn't easy but reviewing everything in the modules and studying will help anyone to succeed in math. Yes, because he is very helpful Yes yes most definetly, he is a great teacher and passing up for his class us crazy. We work at our own pace and that is key for students. We can actually learn it clearly. Sure for those who are unable to finish Math 24 or 25. yes without a doubt especially to those who would like to get ahead in math. sure Yes, he's a great teacher and will really help you. I would recommend him to teach math to anyone who has trouble with math. Im not so good at math but with his help I feel way more confident in my mathematics. Ofcourse! He really knows the subject. Very understandable and helpful. Sure, because I know for certain that students are having trouble with math and it's important to get help from Evan or the other math tutors. Overall, he is a good man, kind and great professor. N/A he is truly one of the best math teachers i have ever had. and i did not like math before this semester, yet Mr. E, inspired me to see past the numbers and formulas to the deeper meaning of math at its roots. and that is the best thing a teacher can give his student. Inspiration. mahalos I appreciate your time, your ability to make this subject interesting. Hes the man!! Good teacher. 18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?

He always sent emails when I was behind so it pushed me to do my work. He cares for each student, and encourages us to pass his class. We all need teachers like him. N/A refer to previous statements. Inspiration. he is always in the lab and if you email him he response as quickly as possible na The fact the he explains things well. He was my first choice in asking for help. Fast email replies. I find it most valuable and helpful that I had left out a couple of mistakes whether it's exponents or base, Evan found out little mistakes that needs to be out of the way and answer the little mistakes in a correct way that he recommends. Evan is a Good person... and an excellent instructor. A Good source to learn from. he made me do the final review that helped me pass Same as 24 his approach towards instructing the material, and being able to offer different methods for the individual student Same as other survey. Not all teachers are qualified to teach a subject that half the population may/may not understand. I was able to learn much more than I already previously knew about math despite the fact that I'm fairly horrible at it.

19. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.

he should have a bit of an extension for final grading instead of may 1. Therefore, people behind will still have a chance to finish instead of attending summer school. N/A None, to me his methods are tried and proven, they worked for me. na I think is course is good as it is. Nothing really. I can improve more on asking for more help, find any situation in the problem that I was having trouble with, and keeping up the pace more on the mathematics. nothing Same as 24 none Same as other survey. 20. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....

he is a good understanding teacher. My overall evaluation of Evsn Yoshimura is that he is a great teacher and a smart person. N/A a ten doesnt do Mr. E justice. one of the best teachers i have encountered. He is a good teacher great Hes a black belt at math. And explains well. Great teacher. a good start to find certain points in the test and exams but to understand why there were mistakes in the test or the final. By using paper would help me review the mistakes that I will improve to answer them correctly. 1,000 % positive and effective as an instructor. he is a great teacher Same as 24 Excellent Same as other survey. 21. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

the online assignments. How each module is done and what you can adjust. his teaching style, able to relate to my view of thinking and alter it to accomplish the mission math is challenging na I liked everything, math is cool! Kind of at your own pace... I like to work on the order of operations because it's a good start to getting to know parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. It's the basic of learning mathematics whatever levels are required in KCC. Availability learning math Not yet on 25. so? n/a Same as other survey. Being able to laugh at my tiny mistakes instead of being overly enraged at myself for making them.

22. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

the requirments for some of the exams. The examples on several of the modules were very questionable. word problems, however with Mr. E. I did what needed to be done, adapt improvise and overcome. sometimes the quizes na I liked it all. ... Mostly the complex fractions and changing the positives into negatives from fractions. computer inflexibility too much hw Not yet on 25! n/a Same as other survey. The other parts in math that I'm struggling to understand despite the help from the teacher or anyone else in general.

He explains the work for me to understand better and faster. Evans major strengths are letting students know what options they have and to encourage them to do better. Really informative and helpful when needed. Easy to work with and always asks students if they need help. Evan is amazing with one on one teaching. There hasn't been a single issue in Math 24 that he has been unable to walk me through within 5 to 10 minutes at MOST. Every method I have been shown by him has been quick and effective. Definitely one of the best math teachers in his genre that I have had the pleasure of being a student to. Very patient and takes the time to explain the math problems to you. He is fair to all students

I don't have any changes to suggest Evan because most of our work were online. I don't see any changes. system works really well for me. I have no suggestions as to what to change in the class. The method that was chosen was very effective for my learning process. N/a

He will help the students out if they don't understand the book and the virtual teacher. He really encourage students to be on top of work, He has one on one meeting with students and talks what needs to be done. He also emails students for any information so that we know whats going on. Evan showed concern by sending me multiple emails about my progress in the class and what I should do to improve. Yes, sitting down with us and teach us the math in a understanding way.

Yes. I would recommend Evan to students because he's he type of professor you shouldn't be scared of. I myself can say that math has always been my weakest of all subjects in school. I believe that this is due to having poor teachers in my classes. Evan knows his materials and explains things well. He takes the time to explain the assignments. Evan is an excellent teacher whose major goal is to help his students in anyway possible to understand the material and pass so that the student is always moving foward to reach his or her goals. He has flawless problem solving skills in math and he explains problems clearly, making them really easy to understand.

The whole math 98 thing. now that i want to transfer schools it is giving me problems. If the problems wouldnt be so repetitive, i wouldnt be so confused! NO None. Professor Yoshimura is always trying new concepts to help the student progress so that he/her can continue on to a higher math level that their major requires. He is an innovator and is always willing to try new concepts that he feels would benefit the student. He is not one to go against conventionl thinking or shaking up the status quo.By using fresh ideas students get motivated and in the long run retention rates go up as do graduation rates.I think other majors on this campus and the UH acedemic system as whole should have professors that are not scared to try new ideas with the overall goal to make the student interested and proficent in any subject. No changes.

Yes. I hate when he gives put down emails He askes us if we need help He is very concerned about every student that registers for his class. His one on one style is great. He has never been the type that assumes that you know the subject, rather he will directly ask you if you need help and will gladly go over lectures if any student didn't get it the first time around. He modified our math lab website to make it a bit easier to maneuver through, checked around the class to make sure everyone was getting help or making progress, gave partial credit after every test.

Yes he is a good teacher but the course not if your planning on changing schools. yes i would reccomend him to someone eles.because he is very helpful Without a doubt, yes I would recommend the professor to any student if they asked me. Yes, because he is a good teacher and he knows his stuff!

good teacher Again one of his greatest strenghts is not being afraid to try new methods of teaching students. In my opinion he is the Professor of the "new generation" of an old subject called math. The days of teaching math the old way is numbered, thanks in part to Professors like Evan Yoshimura. I never seen someone that loved math as much as Mr. Yoshimura. He helped me understand a lot of things that I just couldn't figure out on my own.

finish 2 math classes in one semester That this Hybrid math combining math 24 and 25 makes alot of sense because it enables the student to get to math 100 a whole lot quicker. Alot of the majors in the UH system requires a minimium of math 100 just to get into any program such as EMT Training as an example. It sharpened my critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Very well-organized teacher. He knew what he was talking about and knew what he was doing. Was helpful during class and showed respect towards students. Was very informative and encouraging. Anytime I needed help outside of class, I could just email him about my situation, and he would email me back within that day or the next day. He also explains things very clearly to help you out. very knowledgable! Evan Yoshimura's major strengths as a teacher are giving clear demonstrations of how to do math problems and reminding students to finish up the deadlines. Knows the subject very well. Always willing to help students out if they have any problems with anything. He let us know all our options for the class, and ways around a problem. he is really smart and help real good. Mr.Yoshimura is great at explaining the material and I like that he provides more than one solution to a problem so you can decide best what works for you. It's obvious that he wants his students to succeed (which makes his class that much more enjoyable) because he always makes sure to communicate and send out reminders about what's due. He is accessible to all his students and is very patient to go over material that one does not understand. He speaks clearly and goes over the lectures if we do not understand the material.I think what makes Evan a good instructor is that he cares about his students and makes accommadations so that his students do not fall behind and fail.He does not blow right through the material as do other instructors do, rather he goes at a speed that that does not let the slowest student fall behind and the faster learners have an oppertunity to go faster or slower. The bottom line is that no one gets left behind. He gives students opportunities to make their grades higher. Knows the subject well. was able to break down the problems very well for all students. Mr. Yoshimura is very clear and thourough. He answered the "stupid" questions sincerely and without judgment. He was concerned for the students' academic success and helped in any way possible. Evan explains ways to solve problems in a more simple and less complicated way. He showed many different ways to complete the homework, so we could find a way to do the work in a way that was easy for us. Knowlege of subject mater He is outgoing and prepared to teach his students. His lectures are fun and easy to understand. He gives up his free time to help students and makes sure they get a passing grade. He has a way of making his students understand the topics the easiest possible way. Most of the lectures are done with efficiency in terms of time, and few things are left misunderstood. It is very much straightforward how the class is taught, which is appropriate for a math class setting. Mr.Yoshimura's major strengths are that he is caring, encouraging, accessible, helpful, compassionate, and innovative. He made sure that all his students would be successful in their mathematic endeavors by always willing to help them understand in their own way. He turned someone like myself, who dreaded math become a lover of it and use it more than I thought. I am thankful to have gotten a math teacher like him because I have excelled in it more that I could have ever imagined. Mr.Yoshimura instilled in me great math ethics and to be confident in math. He is the best math teacher I have ever had and I am amazed how he motivated me to do my best. I am glad to have had him this semester and is blessed to have him next semester as well. None. There is nothing I would want to change. none! I suggest to Evan Yoshimura that the test should be an average of 70% and the quiz should be an average of 80%. None Nothing. he need no change I think the use of MyMathlab is a very helpful tool, however, I also feel that it sometimes takes his job away from him. There were numerous classes that students, including myself, didn't pay attention because we were too preoccupied with MyMathlab. None,its the best math 24 course given compared to all the other community colleges in the UH system. N/A none. no changes in mind I suggest he teach Math 25 in the same format in which he taught my Math 24 class I had with him. It really helped everything "click". I find it very inconvenient to have to go back to the "old way" of learning math. None None Change the due dates of assignments & Exams. I think the Homework & quizzes cannot be due the same day as the last day to take the Exam. The Homework & quizzes should be due on a certain day & then everyone is equal to start taking the test the next day. Give about 3-4 days to take the test. In the mean time, lecture on the section mod. then have students do their HW & quizzes. More board examples including more of the basic steaps None None. Perhaps allowing assignments to be completed an extra hour after the time that is currently set as the standard for homework and quiz deadlines. I don't have any changes I would suggest because he is just a great teacher and his teaching is impeccable. He was thorough with everything and really put a handle on his students' learning. I never felt like I was not a priority in his class because he always made himself accessible either by email or in person. For him to email students that are not in class, if their alright and so forth. More concern. none none. Please do not change anything be as you're now! If students were falling behind, he would remind them to get back on task. Was helpful when needed and very informative. Reminded students the times he'd be in the computer lab if they needed him. He showed concern for students by providing help every time you ask him a question. If a student is doing poorly he would talk to them individually and provide them support. He also shows concern by informing the student how they are doing in his class. he kept us on track to pass the course Yoshimura should know if students are having problems with parts of the math sections. He'll email or he'll go up to the students and ask them straight up if they have any problems with the homework. He is always willing to help. He really loves the subject he teaches and he always has an easier way of solving the problems. He talked trough our concerns and problems, any issues, he clearly explained our options. very much so Mr.Yoshimura always communicates effectively and keeps everyone up to speed with their grades and what they need to do to move forward. He's always eager to help students. Speaking for myself, he pushed backed the dues dates for my homework and exams after I got into an accident which set my progress back.That made it manageable for me to catch up and learn the material.I'm not sure if any other instructor would take the time to do that. He gives us the encouragement to push harder and he tells us what we need to do in order to improve our grade. Showed us our academic progress. portfolio checks showed concern for the students grade throughout the semester. His concern for the students was evident through his availability and willingness to help both in and outside the class. He was very helpful in his constsant reminders of upcoming deadlines. Yes, i definitely would recommend him to students because he is very helpful when you need help, very clear to understand, well organized, and cares about his students succeeding. yes, this class was quite easy to pass! 18. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?

I liked the self-paced course. I found it easier to learn on my own, than listening to a lecture. I was able to do my work when it was convenient for me. The portfolio checks every two weeks were most valuable because this was the time where we had one on one talk to him. He would discuss to us on how we are doing in his class, what we need to work and focus more on, and this also allowed us to ask him any questions we may had. the repitition and how it helped make sure you understand material. No deadlines, normal pace, and labs were most valuable for the course. The fact that it was self-pace. I really liked it because no one is rushing me and I can take my time. the tests Lectures.It gives the course a human element to it,in that the online course cannot provide.In my opinion, lectures will never be totally eliminated from one's education. They are much to valuable for the learning process. The fact that the teacher can answer and help the student understand better. im not sure. i enjoyed having the homework and quizzes online. and having a lecture as well. I don't think there really was anything in the course that was not valuable. I liked this course. I think taking notes were least valuable because I feel that in the homework, it showed a lot of examples and videos we could use to help and show us how to do a problem, and I think that taking notes wasn't necessary. different approach I really liked his organization skills and how on top of everything he did. his knowledge of the material is good. He knew what he was doing and he was always available when needed to help. making the class interesting, knowing his stuff and the work sheets he printed out. He shows different methods. He knows how to solve problems, explain, and teach different kinds of methods to solve a certain problem. Very fun and polite. Knows the subject very thoroughly and it shows in his teaching and methods. It really shows that he enjoys teaching, and in the future when taking a math course, I would very much like to have him as an instructor again. His ability to explain the material thoroughly. changed due dates when course compass was down. and its down at the moment again and alternate login doesnt work. shitty website for reliability He really wants us to succeed, trying different ways to help us understand the material. When we did not have access to my math lab over the weekend he reschedule the tests to be fair to us so we would have the opportunity to study. he extended the homework due dates when the web site was down. he also allowed us to turn in our quizzes directly to him so that he can verify the answers with the computer as well as check the work.it was very helpful. He was always there to one on one help the students with any struggles. He also sent out a lot of emails to help keep us informed. asking if we needed help, giving us reviews and doing problems on the board. He made himself available for any questions or concerns before and after class. He went over everyone's work diligently and gave partial credit wherever necessary. He also offered a few extra credit oppurtunities. He made worksheets for us to practice and review, sent emails with information we need (such as due dates, exam dates, etc.) He also checks answers when we finish tests so we are able to get partial credit. Made himself available at any time and was very reasonable when UN-foreseen circumstances arouse as they often do during a fast paced course. By being available He cared about our progress in the class. It felt like he wanted all of us to do well. And he made sure that we understood the material as we were going over them. He always encouraged students to participate. Have us turn in quizes so we can see why we got a problem wrong

yes I would totally recommend him to students and wish he would teach math 100. Reason why? Just read the above. yes, because i did like the structure of the class. He helped me understand. He explains well. yes. good teacher, interesting and helpful. He was very clear and a good teacher, but it was difficult to keep up with the 3-4 hours of homework daily alongside a 45 minute to 1 hour quiz daily. I know that it is an accelerated course, but Math 24 summer session was half the homework...example: 25-50 problems a day as opposed to Evan Yoshimura's 45-90 problems a day. Yes, unless the individual does not like doing homework on the computer.. Absolutely. He is a breath of fresh air when taking a math class. He speaks clearly and slowly, takes his time in showing the steps, and is always available for extra help and instruction. Yes, due primarily to his availability I would not recommend this kind of course to anyone else, especially for the summer. I struggled with this computer format in Math 24 and I am doing far worse in Math 25. The overall experience is the worst I have had in 2 years at KCC. nothing The teacher. This is the 2nd time i took math 25 and the reason i am doing better is in part to his lecture and teaching style. the on line web site, really helped me go at my own pace. It was at our own pace so it helped me to find more self motivation rather than relying on teachers to tell you when to do things/ worksheets It prepared me for fall semester because it challenged my time management skills. We are able to work at our own pace, since the due date for a chapter is on the same day. Gave me a better foundation to build on in continuing my college degree and a better understanding of math. COUSE COMPASS MY MATH LAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! least valuable is that my math lab is not clear about how to do the math. But that is why having a lecture class with Mr. Yoshimura is really imperative and extremely helpful. I don't like math. so I think math in general is least valuable ... There was no part of little value, but one would rather practice on the homework than do the worksheets if given a choice. Because the homework and quiz are done at our own pace, we can slack and do everything last minute. It a bit off putting that the assignments and tests are conducted online. Timeline Question 19 of this survey. Really, asking about personal responsibility on a survey about a math professor. What. The. Fuck. I feel like it was an online class. n/a None. None that i could think of. none I think Binder checks were kind of pointless because we don't really use our old tests later. none. The only suggestion I would give to him is to give feedback on student's homework and quizzes. When you tell students their score on quizzes, you could check each problem and see which ones students got wrong. Then write some advice on how to solve the problem or what we could do better next time. Some students told me that he made them feel dumb, so maybe go even slower with slow students. None. Maybe just the requirements to pass quizzes should be lowered that is all Actually TEACH the class!! Nothing any, because the coures was self paste course and the teaching techniques are different, something I never experienced before. Now that we are having weekly workshops (our class was self-paced) that serve as additional help, I don't have any more suggestions. Stabilize the grading structure on this class! Stop with the major last week of instruction grading policy changes! Stop the food and drink in the room. People are grazing on chips and sticky stuff while using shared public computer keyboards - NASTY! n/a None. No changes. Nothing. If we do all the work on the computer it might be easier if we took the midterm and final on the computer too because that's what we're used to. None I don't really have any suggestions.

He was available for people to ask questions. He did a one on one once a week for portfolio checks He reminded us to come in for lab hours. email He is one of the most concerned teachers actually, we had lab monitors and him as well, that would walk around the class and make sure we were all right. He also held workshops on Fridays that helped us students even more! He told us how behind or ahead we were in class and if we were doing good by doing weekly portfolio meetings. Checked progress regularly and sent emails and talked to me us in class on where we should be and what we should do to get to where we need to be. He met with us individauly once a week during class to show us where we stand and how we can improve. Through e-mail and face-to-face meetings. He constantly kept up on you if you were lagging constantly reminding you about time lines that seemed immaterial at the time but turned out to be very key when they came around. did his job well He asked if i was doing okay on certain modules, the ones i took couple times to pass. He showed concern by making sure why students didnt attend class through email. Made sure everything is ok outside of class. He helped any students that needed any extra attention. held a portfolio check every week or two to make sure we are progressing. By making time outside of class to meet with students, helping them as much as possible and telling us upcoming events. Sitting down and working out the problems with you. Always asking if we needed any help. Great Job. Responding to my emails and helping me when I needed it. Offered help if students need it. He calls everybody up one by one every week. Not just to do a portfolio check, but to take the time to personally talk to you about your progress. He lets you know about the workshops and the tutoring, and everything you need to do to get extra help if you need. That's what students need. By actively involving himself in friday seminars. By sending out notices for *most* important changes and relevant details. motivation He talked to each student individually about their progress and helped to plan a guide to success. Conferences during class along with personal e mails. He would check up on our portfolio and make sure we were keeping up with the modules. He'd meet with us once a week, checking our binders, and talk about our grades. Somewhat helped us prepare ourselves for the next course if we needed to take it. He had weekly check ups and let them know what they can do to improve their scores if they were falling behind. Met with them to let them know how they're doing and how they can improve and what to expect. Tell you your progress week and told you what you need to get done in the class. He would tell us every week for us to keep up with our work and stay on schedule so we wouldn't fall behind.

No, I would not recommend this class to anyone else. I liked being able to work at my own pace, but the online part wasn't informative. If they would like a hybrid class then yes Yes, because he is able to help with most questions asked to him. yes, hes awesome Of course! If your open to learning, this is the perfect class! It would be really good if Math 25 was on-line like 24 is. GOOD JOB! (: n/a The class arrangement was one of the best i've ever seen, if this had been a normal class with deadlines i would have failed this and most likely another class. The flexible do it your self schedule should be adopted for all math classes--i may finish a course but i'll never remember anything because of the pacing. If i was allowed in my own time to do all the math i needed for my degree i would not only be able to focus on other classes with necessary deadlines i would actually remember the math when it came down to it. none None. This class was a self taught class and if this is the case then we should not being paying full tuition for this class. We should be able to jump from chapter to chapter instead of having to pass one chapter to move on to the next. Some chapters are easier than others and should be able to come back to those chapters that giving us a difficult time. Having to wait an entire weekend or holiday to take a quiz in order to progress is a waste of time. We could be working on another chapter during the weekend or holiday. - Stop with the significant changes after the fact. A syllabus should not be just a nice idea but more like a contract. Mr. Yoshimura knew the material very well and showed everyone that if there is more than one way to solve a math problem then thats the beauty of math. not like some instructors where you have to follow there way. Mr. Yoshimura stated that we should use anyway we feel that comfort us. The learning is very interactive and "hands on". It isn't just another boring lecture. I look forward to coming to class every day to learn something new. easy to understand to me. his positive vibe, he makes his class more than just about math. he talks about life lessons. Evan taught in a way that was very easy to learn and he simplified a lot of very complicated math terms making it extremely easy to learn. He explains his lessons clearly and in an easier way to remember. When we had questions he answered them right away. He is very good at explaining and breaking concepts down when not understood. He knows about the subject, so he always could help in my own question. I like the work sheets ,that help a lot to understand the subject. He's great at explaining new ideas in a way that is easy to understand. He makes sense of things that were once confusing. He's a very good math teacher, I would look for classes he teaches in the future. Trying to figure out differnt ways to learn math. He really knows his Algebra and he is very accommadating. -Announcing the areas that students need extra help on, and it benefits not one person but everyone. He studied the test scores and if the average started to drop, he would give us more tips on how we can improve on the next test. He went over material that we didn't understand. He talked to us individually about our grades, emailed us frequently to let us know what is about to come up, and giving us extra material to study. Asked if everyone understood any problems and if not, was willing to explain better. Let us know that if we needed any extra help or had any concerns we could talk to him. Made sure we understood everything clearly tell us to see him around office hours. Mr. Yoshimura showed concerns to students by emailing each student and saying where they stand in the class and also explains what we need to do to exceed. He always is offering tutoring and extra help outside of class student to teacher by telling them what they need to know, when they need help, he asks alot of questions and makes sure all of us know the material before moiving on Evan was always willing to explain all concepts to every student no matter how far they were behind and did not ever make any one feel stupid for not understanding. He would email us, and answer our questions. Before exams hed let us have one last chance to ask for help. He was very understanding by answering emails in a very timely manner. Aswell as be compassionate for my situation, my father passed away during the semester and he understood my situation completly and worked with me so i didn't fall behind. It is greatly appreciated he is an amazing professor. He always sent emails before test telling about what is necessary do! He teaches the lessons at a good pace. It isn't rushed so you feel like there is no time to ask questions. Everything he does is step by step and I like that he encourages a binder therefore making notes pretty necessary. He's major strength as a teacher is the way he explains the subject. Its is very thorough and easy to understand. When covering a new chapter he gave plenty of examples for each problem. His very very fair and he gives you a lot of time to do your work. In every section of the book he would give you examples of every way you might see it on tests. He really knows what he is doing. Patient, understanding, willing to help. Mr. Yoshimura's projected an enthusiasm that kept me focused. He is good at teaching math problems. For example, he gives examples on how to solve the problem. He lecture us about the topic we are doing. He encourages us to participate and do well in class, quizess, and exams. He taught the class well He knew the material well He gave clear and understanding examples he is able to communicate well to students in a way that makes class fun and entertaining. he knows the material very well and goes about a problem through different ways so that each student may understand it better. He knows math. His understanding of the material and ability to teach the material several different ways for student to understand more effectively. He would repeat over the same thing even though he said it twice. he'll repeat it for a third time. he also demonstrates great quality for us students. he will help the students whenever they have questions. He taught the subject very well, he knew what he was talking about. He made it so clear, and I learned how to do steps in another easier way. He can relate to our problems we have for math. If we forget how to do the material he could suggest how to remember it. no comments. Nothing, really. I think that the homework was really easy and helpful that it had an option of having the problem explained step by step. But the fact that its online makes it a little harder to access, especially when you don't have much time at home to spend on the computer. no changes needed. His office hours should change Worksheets for homework instead of MML. I had a lot of problems on the website. When he sees that you did not do the best for tests, he allows you to retake it in order to try for a better score. by being available during office hours and offering his help to those in need of help. When he noticed the class did poorly on a chapter quiz he would go through the material to make sure we were ready for the exam. He told us his offices hours and let us know everytime our class scored low on quiz or exams that he is there to help us. By being available for extra help. By allowing the students, as myself, the opportunity to retake a test for better understanding He gives us advice about the upcoming lessons, quizess, and exams. He would encourage students to visit him during his office hours at anytime about anything and he would always stay after class if anyone needed anything. he did many different types of examples for all sections of the math problems. even if a student didn't understand a problem right away, he always took time for them. She gave people different opportunity to get a better grade He was a huge help to me! Whenever I needed extra help understanding material or studying for an exam he made himself to available to give me as much help as I needed. Also with my concern for my grade he would calculate for me what scores I would need and what more I could do to deserve the grade I wanted. He was open during his office hours. he also stayed back a couple minutes to help out if anyone had questions on the exam that he gives us back right after class. he always ask us if we have any question and make sure we fully understand the lesson or know how to solve the problems. He was always open to questions and came in early and stayed after class to help us. When he was explaining stpes he would always stop and ask if we had questions, and when we did he took the time to expalain it until we understood. He told us to go into his office hours he is good for students if they are need him for helping, so he always willing do and tried to be paitent. i am sure he will fine with them. he lets them know what their score are and what they need to improve on..such as doing better in exams. asking if we or they need help in anything that might be bothering them

I would. He has good teaching skills and is very organized and not fumbling around through our schedule. Its very well planned. Yes, I would recommend him to other students. He is a good teacher and knows what he is talking about, and you can tell! Maybe some lectures that are a little more hands on. Like worksheets and group projects or something. he knows the material very well and is very concerned with the students he teaches. Evan has many strengths. His lectures are great. I understood the chapters he taught very well. He went over the course material every day in class and urged us to take notes for our portfolios. He would EXPLAIN in DETAIL which steps to do any why, and at the end of every section he always asked "do we need another one?" He urged us to work together on quizzes in class and offered competitive extra credit for harder questions .... it was a rewarding challenge!! He has his own way to do math so I donot get confuse. He's young so he knows how college students are and is able to adapt his way of teaching in ways that makes sense to people today. Shows different problem solving methods and lets the student decide which method he/she prefers to use. He is good at math. his major strengths as a teacher is that he is a great teacher that goes step by step throughout the lecture. you can easily follow his steps. He was clear and very concise with the material. Gave extra credit. Gave students different methods to choose from. Makes the class extremely challenging. Maybe a little too much. He appears to know math very well. I realy liked his style of teaching and they way he had done his lectures. explains things thoroughly, gives several examples until students feel ready to move forward. he always encourages working with peers to get a different perspective on the material being taught.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

none I don't think the quizzes should be given everyday. It can help greatly or not help at all. It raises the grades of some students and helps to get them prepared for the exams, but for others, it brings their grades down. No changes. none :) None. Keep doing what you do. You do it well. no changes...specially with the extra credits, keep it! Stop giving trick questions on quizzes, it confuses students. Quizes are good for the class however for those students who need to get and maintain a 4.0 average these quizes could jeopardize their grade point average. Tries hard to encourage students to create a type of math dialogue, but cannot explain completely in lamens terms all math procedures, which is the way most community college students need new information explained to them. no changes

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

he always offered extra help and constantly updated laulima, which no other teacher does. He always made it clear that if we needed help, he was available during office hours. He would also give extra example problems to the class for those who needed more practice if their was time. He offered help to all the students. If a student need help or didn't understand a certain problem, he would explain it 'til they fully understood the problem. He was willing to let us see him during his office hours, if we needed anymore help. He always sent out emails with office hour updates, let us do test retakes if we failed a test and always let us know hours he was open for tutor/other students that were open for tutors. He gave me email personally and told me what I should do. Evan was always in touch with students via e-mail. A first for a math teacher I've ever had in the UH system. If someone wasn't doing well they would know Asking if students needed more examples. he would make us review before the test and makes sure that we understand our assignments. He always reminded us of homework, when to bring our portfolios, and also helped us with any questions we had. Extended homework due date so that students can study for exams. Tried to explain as clearly as possible and offered one on one study time to students during office hours. He always asked if anyone had wuestions and let people take retakes if they needed. made himself available after class and informed us of his office hours frequently if anyone needed extra help.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

yeah, guess so Yes, he's a good teacher. Yes, I would recommend him to students. He's lectures are straight to the point. He taught us new ways of solving a certain equation. yes, i think that he is PERFECT for a math teacher, especially for higher math classes because math is a very tough subject, but the way that he goes into explaining with detail, on the board, and urging us to do it ourselves was a VERY successful and easy way to keep his students up to par. yes, Because he is nice person and good teacher. Yes I definitely would... But many of the people I know are beyond 24/25 math levels. But if they need to catch up, he's definitely the man to see. Definitely, based on my evaluations of him above this Yes. He explains the subject well but the notes are sometimes unclear. yes because he is a good speaker and encourages us to ask a lot of questions. Yes I would. His teaching style is very clear and straight to the point. He doesn't skip around lessons. Yes. He's a very nice, friendly, and no-pressure teacher. Yes! Especially for those who like a good challenge. Yes and no. If the student is smart an can catch on easily and is responsible enough to study on their own, then yes. If the student needs things explained step by step and wriitten out for them then there is only one other teacher who could do that better than Evan Yoshimura. Yes because he is a good teacher. yes because his method of teaching is effective and straight forward. also, he gives quizzes nearly every class on previous material to keep students on their feet and to make sure we understand the material.

his class is pretty boring but he tries to keep it lively. He sometime let the students teach the class. He lets us debate on a certain answer, if we weren't able to decide between two. I really enjoyed him as a teacher. I took this math class the semester before with another teacher and he made it so complicated & hard to follow & understand .... i hated it and gave up half way through the semester. he didn't offer any help whatsoever. when i had class with evan i found that i went to class more and i actually wanted to apply myself because he made math fun for me, and in a way that i could understand. i really enjoyed him .... he made math possible for me again :) I wish the other UH Campuses hired lecturers like Evan. Great teacher Nothing further. He is a good teacher who really enjoys math. You guys should give him a raise. quizzes are an effective tool as well as peer collaboration.

great teacher but very boring subject. not sure if it was hard to stay awake because of his teaching style or the material we are learning. that he is a great professor. I've had him for two semesters now and I wouldn't mind having him again. He is a great teacher. I would take his other classes, if he taught a math higher than MATH 25. GREAT GREAT GREAT :) I really like him, I may want to take his class again if I fail. Best math teacher i've had thus far... definitely makes me want to move far in math, despite being my most hated subject. 10 out of 10 that his class is generally enjoyable. I've worse math teachers in the past. he is a good teacher and i would recommend him He's a good teacher. I would recommend him to other students. Great teacher. He went over the course a numerous amount of times for the students who had trouble with the course and in a way, has supplemented everybodies learning experience. The teachers strenghts were explaining everything in good detail. Styles of teaching, knowing the material very well teaching us shortcuts and different ways to solve the problems. Teaching the subject at hand. He explained each lesson very well with problems on the board and found ways to make learning the material much more easier. Most students are not comfortable raising their hands in class and asking questions when their teacher is a know it all and makes them feel inferior for asking a simple question. He always asked if anybody had any question and to not to be afraid to ask any kind of question. He would email or talk to students ahead of time for any important details we might need. He was available for office hours. Tells us ahead of time when he wont be able to come to teach. Also kept us updated very often stayed after class for any questions When he changed schedule, he always told us earlier. Stays after class to help student with questions and fix problems as they occur. slow down when some student have a hard time understanding the material. not sure. He tried to teach us different ways for different types of learners. He understood that not everyone understands math in one way it takes a few different techniques for one to understand and choose one that fits them best. he showed concern by allways going over what may be placed on the exams to make sure each of uss fully understand what may be on the test to come. Helping out with exams and homework by pointing out mistakes and how to correct them. He would explain the problems if even one student didn't understand and he was available when needed. He didn't. He always encouraged any questions on certain problems he was teaching in class and also encouraged his students to participate any time. Whenever I had questions or concerns about tests or homework assignments, he always emailed back quickly so I knew he could be there for me whenever I wasn't sure of something. He would stay after class to help those who needed/wanted help. Took the time to explain things and is always willing to help. he gave us the responsibility Responds to questions. hte instructor always asked hte students if they have any questions and as soon as a students need help on somthing the instructor go over hte problem one more time so that, that studetns will be able to understand the problem. Extra Help if needed. Answering questions students had. he always emphasize that whenever we don't understand the lesson, we shouldn't hesitate to ask help from him. and he always remind us to do our homeworks. always willing to give up his free time to help those who are struggling and w/ the time he had left he had to been grading HW, making tests, grading tests, and updating Laulima.

I would recommend this instructor to students because of his love for math and enthusiasm towards teaching math to students. Yeah I would reccomend this instructor. He does good explaining about math problems. He tries to keep things as simple as possible. Yes, i would recommend this intructor to students becasue he does teach at a slow pace, and you won't feel lost. He makes sure you understand the section before you move on to the next yes helped me understand things better than before Yes His explanation was clear and easy to understand. yes Yes i would since he doesn't over load you on home work but gives you the chance to excel in the subject. has a great understanding for material. Maybe, but he's still a good teacher. Yes, because he was nice and he never made me feel dumb for saying the wrong answer out in class. yes i would, because to me he is one of the best teachers i have had at Kcc so far. He goes over all the information that we will need to understand for the test and he grades them very fairly trying to help uss in a way to suceed and pass the course. Yes; he's cool and smart, and he always makes sure his class is on track. Yes, he's funny, cool, and makes class interesting. No way. This teacher is horrible. He may know a lot about the subject but has no clue how to relay that to his students. I was so relieved the one day we had a substitute teacher who actually explained things to us. I will be taking him next semester. Yes Mr Yoshimura was a very good Math 24 professor because he is patient with his students and is always wanting to review anything if anyone wanted to. His lectures are informative and helpful so we are able to understand the homework assignments. Yes, not too hard. He was nice and fair in his grading and expectations in assignments. Really cool. i would say that he was probably the best math teacher i had in a while.... i wish i was up to the caliber of student needed to keep up, it only begining alg and the pace was one that i would need to isolate from other credits. i don't think Ev is capable of duming it down enough for some. sometimes his remarks are derogotory or condicending, and reveal a slight frustration in attempts to slow down. he gives extra hard questions almost like showing of how smart he is. duh i know he want to make strong algebra foundations but .... some times the load excceeds specs A teacher that is easily able to understand. i loved his class. it is unlike me to sit and understand math and i was happy to come to class Thank you. HAVE A GOOD YEAR AND BE SAFE! I like the instructors class and if he was teaching the math I had to take next semester, I'd probabaly take his class. He's quirky but a good teacher! Maybe some practice sheets for quizess anf exams to prepare students with. nothing really. great class overall get more people to participate. very easy to understand when hes teaching Its okay. None I feel like he did a good job. I am not good at math and he made me understand some concepts that I haven't been able to get since seventh grade none his teaching style that he has as of now is very good and i feel he is an excelent teacher to have n/a None I liked his teaching style and methods. Hrmmm maybe more group activities? notes, practice problems in class, and study guides... keep in order with syllybus retest option keep it simple no need to go into hybolic confusing questions the guy is rocket man when i am pedestian Review for the test and prepare the students more. i wouldnt suggest anything i thought the class was perfect. I have nothing. HAVE FUN! -shorter exams, they're a bit long. Make class a bit more interesting! nothing none nothing Call on people in class, forces us to do the assignments and come to class prepared. this intructors teaching style and methods are good and dont need anymore improving.. Have more class discussions please 1. try to throw some jokes, as needed. so as not to make the class boring . and for it to become even more interesting subject. 2. try not to appear so serious. try to smile at times. :) don't have any, hes doing a good job.

I don't like the way the tests are so difficult. It was like we were set up for failure. His reasoning is he is preparing us for the final. But it is difficult to take a test when the material was not as difficult on the homework. I dont have any changes for the instructor It was his first semester so i think he already has plenty of ideas on his own none shorter exams... More math problems to do on assignments.

If the student didn't get the problem, he would show them a way that they can understand it. letting them know when everything was due multiple times. Givin extra day for homework insuring students would most likely get them done more often asking if any of us had any questions or concerns availability, and answered students questions Asks the class if they have any questions before starting the new section or chapter.

Yes, I would recommend yes, because his teaching is very clear, grading policy is fair, and the homework assignments are easy. Yes and no. If you already have an idea and knowledge of the course then yes because his way of teaching is different. If you dont know anything then probabley not because he doesnt explain the basics very whell Yes, less homework and teaches well Evan Yoshimura is a great math professor. He knows his material very well and always answers any questions that the students bring up when they don't understand. yes, a very sincere instructor Yes, because he explains the material clearly and shows a good amount of examples so the students can understand the material a lot better.
