21. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She helps students outside of class time.
She took the effort to approach students individually and set up meetings with them to help them with their writing, and provided personalized feedback for each student.
She help us with our essays
She went up to many of the students during each class, asking them how they were doing on papers, and she asked them about who they were doing overall, and if she needed to help them in anyway, she was there. She would constantly ask the class if they ever needed anything, they could arrange a meeting, they could see her during her office hours, or they could contact her through email or phone. She made sure the students knew she was there to help them anytime she could.
She always gives students a chance to redeem themselves with extra credit assignments and always has time to talk to students.
She allows us to have conferences with her for as many times a week as needed. In those conferences is a more one and one situation. I can have her full attention without interruption, and everything that is expected from me is clearly laid out, but not written in stone.
She holds personal conferences that we can sign up for every week in order to help us succeed.
She set up conferences with students to offer help on essays and revisions.
she had meetings to make sure
Schedules conferences for those needing help. Listens to concerns/problems that students fa. Offers help from herself or by your peers.
She would encourage conferences in order to better help each person individually and personally. She would always give honest feedback of papers and gave many opportunities to re-do drafts before the finals.
She is readily available for conferences and always shoots out emails to remind students to finish their assignments.
She set up conferences to help us out with our writing assignments.
She made sure that we all were on time, prepared, and ready to learn both course material and lessons that we can carry with us till the end of time.
We could set up meetings with her and talk about what we needed help in.
I can tell she is concerned for her students by the way she gives us feedback on our work, and how she gives us many chances to improve our grade.
22. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
She's very interested in her the topics shown by students.
She used discussion-based methods to stimulate writing topics.
She is fun and patient with her students
The class was a neutral class. I liked the amount of enthusiasm certain students showed, but I also disliked how certain students made the class difficult because they didn't do the work, and they slowed the class down when a peer-edit came around, or when a class discussion was happening, and they didn't do the reading, so when Mrs. St. John called on them, they would sit there pretending to think, and then be like "I don't know".
I loved the book she chose for our class. All of the stories really helped me understand the different types of writing and what every essay contains. I love that I grew as a reader and writer, compared to teachers that teach one more than the other.
She gathered everyone to the center of the class where she would lecture. She gave us turns to interact and converse with her. Never did feel judged.
She is very helpful in class and helps us to pass
Ssuan St. John was impartial. She showed no favoritism nor did she show any dislike when it came to students.
she made sure everyone understood the material
I think she should try to grade the major assignments (essays, research paper, etc.) in a more timely manner to hand it back to us so we have sufficient time to revise the assignments ahead of the due date instead of 2- 3 days before the assignment was due. I completely stressed over this!
I didn't like the way that we always needed a peer editor or we'd show everyone our blog posts, but that's not her fault. I am a very private person.
Susan is a great teacher. The only thing I would recommend is that Susan organize her time so that the students get their major assignments back in hard copy to work on revisions well ahead of the due dates. The portfolio was a little too much, but it did help me to recognize and reflect on my writing skills.
She took a lot of time to listen to the individual interests of each student.
I enjoy that she opens the room up to debate on questions, topics, ideals, and other forms of thoughts, its a very dual processed class.
I liked when we did more creative writing.
She definitely knows the subject, and she makes the lessons really interesting. She has a positive attitude all the time. The class discussions are really deep and thought-provoking.
23. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
She's an amazing teacher
Very helpful.
Keep doing great
She is a great teacher. I'm glad I took her class for English.
She is really nice! I loved having her as a teacher.
During my conferences with her she would lead to the water and basically have the water there for you to drink. What I mean is that she would tell me how to do things, and where to grab the information from, but she would actually go to the source of the data, and then email it to me, instead of me trying to write notes.
she is a great professor
She has the best intentions.

She is an amazing teacher, and i'm glad that i was able to draw her.
She's very sweet and easy to talk to.
She is definitely a teacher to have. I think I really improved my writing skills this semester under her instruction.
24. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Yes because she's a great teacher and she takes time to meet with students outside of class
Yes, she is great for basic 100 level students who need overall writing improvement.
Yes, best english teacher ever
Yes I would. She is a great teacher, and is willing to help anyone succeed in her class.
Yes I would because she helps improve your writing in all aspects.
I already have done so. Because my journey with her has been an awakening experience, and I would like people to have that with her for their own benefit. And Susan will unselfishly deliver.
Yes, because she is concerned for our success.
Yes. She knows what she is teaching and conveys instructions very clearly and offers help whenever students need it.
yes, she is good
I thought this (English 100) was an intense writing course that you needed to focus completely on and devote most of your time to. If you missed an assignment or just didn't bother doing it, it might start to pile up on you. Of course she gives you opportunity to turn it in late or do extra credit to make some of it up. But, if you are not willing to focus on this, this may not be for you.
Yes, because she is very organized and involved.
I would recommend her to people who like to write intensively.
Yes I would. Her course has helped me rediscover my love for writing.
Yes, she doesnt just teach you, she teaches you how to teach yourself.
Yes because she was a good professor and I felt like I improved on my writing.
I would recommend her. She is very organized and falls through with all of the plans on the schedules she hands out, which I especially like because I like to know what's coming up. She is very understanding; she seemed to understand how much work we had on our shoulders so she spaced out deadlines really well to make it easy on us. She's just a great teacher, seriously.
25. Other comments:
Don't stop teaching
Alot of the quizzes are online, which makes it easier and more efficient.
Susan listens to me from two sides of her ears, but she doesn't talk out of both sides of her mouth. You know what I mean.

21. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She understood my mum was in the hospital so i couldnt go to a meeting
Susan is always willing to answer questions and offer ways to make up assignments.
She always would ask us to meet up outside of class hours.
she would approach students and encourage them to do well
She was always willing to conference with students and help them in any way she could.
She showed concern for students by answering their questions, offering help, and by making sure every student understood things.
Ms. St John offers her time each day outside of class time. She actively encourages her students to meet with her to revise and refine their work.
She would set up individual conferences with us to show us areas of improvement.
If she knew that they needed help then she would talk with them and go individually work with them or have meetings with them.
She had outside meetings when we needed them.
By making it known to students that she is always available for assistance.
22. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
i didn't
I like how Susan kept it simple, but still taught us what we needed to know in order to complete our assignments. She gave handouts which helped me because I am a visual person. She never made any answer seem like a wrong answer, she would just turn it around to explain what the right answer was. She offered plenty of time for assignments to be handed in and had a clear mapped out schedule for the semester which I also liked.
I liked how she didn't only teach us about essays but punctuation, and grammar.
i liked how she would explain everything well. i didn't like the amount of blogs and forums that were assigned on top of essays
Susan never made anyone feel like they were asking a stupid question. I really respect that.
I liked that Susan kept gave handouts and gave her students a schedule every two weeks to help keep the class and the students organized.
I like the way Ms. St John interacts with her students. In class, it seems more like a meeting with ideas exchanging amongst us students rather than just sitting in class being lectured.
I thought that Susan's class was hard for a English Composition course. However, her teachings has taught me a lot in improving my writing.
She did help with most of my work, but when I did ask questions it did not seem like she was to sure with what she was saying. It did not allow me to know what was required most times.
I liked that she helped edit our essays. I disliked the peer edit reviews because some people don't do it.
I like the way she helped me improve my writing ability.
23. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
shes ok
Susan was an excellent teacher. I went into this class dreading it and now I am leaving without as much dread for writing. Susan helped me learn how to write(just get it on the paper) and the rest can be fixed.
she is a good teacher. very nice and helpful and understanding
It was a fun course and I learned a lot. :)
Susan St John was a very nice and understanding teacher.
Ms. St John makes her class feel at ease in the class room and she gives plenty of opportunities to better assignment scores.
I think that she needs to go a little more slow with the works she gives. I think its best that she should work one on one more with each student. She needs to explain everything out a little more specific.
Thank You!
Susan always has a positive and pleasant demeanor that makes me feel comfortable and eager to learn.
24. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
not really
I would absolutely recommend Susan! She is a very fair teacher!
Yes she was very good at teaching
yes she is a cool teacher and i did a lot in her class
Yes, I would recommend Susan St. John because the course was both challenging and rewarding.
I would recommend Susan to other students because she grades fairly, is friendly, organized, and makes class easy to understand.
Yes. Ms. St John is a very fair instructor and her class is very fun and enlightening, as well as informative.
Im very neutral of this because she is good at some points but at others not so much. I think she needs a little more work. She is a nice teacher but she needs to b a more specific.
Yes, if they are hard workers she's the class to be in.
Yes. Her passion for writing is highly evident.
25. Other comments:
her class is very stressful and overly packed full of stuff that makes it hard to keep up with other classes
I am grateful that Susan was my English 100 teacher. She made it more enjoyable. This was my first college class and the only one I took that wasn't online this semester. I was very nervous starting this semester, but after taking Susan's class, I realized there is nothing to worry about!
thanks for a good semester ^_^
The methods of instruction demonstrated by Susan St. John has allowed me to become a better overall student.

Susan St John: ENG100, Fall 2013     Back to top

Campus: Windward Community College Department: Language Arts
Course: ENG 100 - Composition I Crn (Section): 64030 (0)
1. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Learning how to properly evaluate sources.
Outside help and conferencing.
My professor gave me really useful tips about how to improve my paper and she really made me think. I feel like I was forced to step up my game, and I learned a lot from that.
I feel as though all the teacher meetings were most valuable for the course. Her feedback was helpful towards editing each of my drafts. The feedback also gave me useful tips on what to do when I begin on a new essay.
I think that teacher conferences were very valuable. The one on one time with the teacher really helped me stay on the right track.
"Conferences"
Thesis and Mla format helped to build my writing.
Research paper and grammar
2. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The interview essay was least valuable to me.
Vocabulary wall.
Listening to other people's presentations weren't always that helpful of insightful, especially when the presenter was ill-prepared or too soft-spoken to understand. However, I did see a lot of value in reading the essays in the textbook. Although some of them didn't really make sense to me, it really opened my eyes about what can be done with writing.
I did not enjoy how much time we lost during presentations that we could've used for other important tasks in class.
Not too much I can think of, but possibly the need to be connected online in order to pass this class. That was somewhat difficult. Also I believe the very big one was having to pass the library test in order to pass the whole class. I personally believe that was completely unnecessary. Students should be held accountable for finding their own research their own way. I believe this aspect was a little extreme.
Did not like the hotseats

Hot seats, some of the readings I found irrelevent
3. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
My classmates and instructor.
Writing traits and usage of them.
Like I said, I didn't know that I was capable of writing so much in such a small box of time, and I've really learned about dealing with stress and time management.
how much I learned in english and pass on that knowledge to other people.
Having a teacher that actually worked with you and helped you get in assignments maybe a little late, but not completely destroying your grade.
First college english class....
Giving the course what I had and taking away from it some valuable things.
The friendly atmosphere, interesting subjects, nice proffesor
4. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
No complaints.
1. For Hotseat presentations, maybe it would be better if students had a guideline or rubric on the actual presentation of the hotseats. For example, to speak with a loud and clear voice would be worth a couple of points.
- edit your timeline - make creative projects -not much else

25. How did the instructor show concern for students?
taking time to write individual notes on each paper and ways to revise them. providing a schedule of due dates and upcoming assignments.
Made time for them and checked up on student progress frequently.
Professor St John made time outside of class to conference with students about their assignments. She suggested resources, carefully examined the content of each assignment, and was generally always available.
She individually talks with her students about problems they have in class and how they can improve themselves, not only for her class, but in general.
By having one on one meetings.
Conferences
By spending extra time to look over my work.
Always offering ways to make up for missed assignments, extra credit. She is very kind and always open to answer questions.
26. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I felt like a lot of time was wasted just sitting around
She kept up with student progress.
I like that huge chunks of time were spent peer editing and conferencing one-on-one with the professor. It gave me a chance to form bonds with my classmates, and forced to me to scrutinize my own work carefully.
what I liked about her class was all the people in it. She wasn't the only person who would help, but the students would also help each other. I also like all the feedback she gives, her feedback was very useful towards each of my essays
She was very sympathetic and really tried to help us pass.
She was very on it.
Like- Very nice, good pace, lots of involvement out of every student. Dislike- Cant think of anything
27. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
