13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
It was great meeting new friends and the teacher explain everything that a teacher has done.
the hands on work we did and movies we watched
I really enjoyed how there was no tests, or pop quizzes in this class. Also that assignments that were given were based on what the students though. That the students could be completely honest and it would not impact our grade. I also liked the pot luck, so we could get a taste of some Japanese food. However, I wish there was a bit more of a selection than just a lot of mochi with sushi, gyoza, and a couple other foods. What else I enjoyed was that all and any questions were allowed, and they would be answered as best as the instructor could answer them.
everything was great and i enjoyed learning about japan culture!!
In this class, I have learned a lot about myself. I have a lot of Japanese blood in me and was raised by my Grandmother. I have learned why I have the values I do. Also, we learned about Japanese culture though a wide verity of ways like class discussions, films, a field trip, and even the pot luck.
I loved the films and class interaction, and I loved sherry who was very sympathetic to her students individual needs!
The routinely practice of our assignments was probably the thing I enjoyed most about this class.
The projects were fun and group discussions were interesting.
I liked the videos of Kiyoto and Tokyo. The comparison between them was very interesting and different. Also learning about how the women are nowadays and that they don't marry because they also work and want to travel was interesting to me. It just showed how strong women are becoming nowadays.
I liked the potluck and watching movies.
Had a lot of fun in this class. Mrs. Shepherd was knowledgeable about Japan and always gave us a good answer when we asked questions. Good teacher, good class.
The insence was really cool and our group discussions
she would bring up japanese culture and traditions.
Its interactiveness.
I liked that I got to have a different view of the Japanese culture. Also i enjoyed everyone being engaged in the class participation.
Many of the assignments we got were reflections on the subject matter. With this format was more enjoyable because I got to say how I felt about the content instead of just memorize stuff for the short term.

The course books and material we used was very helpful through out the course.
I'm not a big fan of internet classes, but it was pretty interesting to read the books given and free reign to express how we feel about it.
I enjoyed the weekly reading assignments and reflection papers. I thought the course content was very accessible and still engaging. I think the book Professor Shepherd chose, the Japanese Mind, was perfect for our course and challenged me to think about Japanese culture on a deeper level. I also appreciated how Professor Shepherd took the time to read and respond to our weekly reflection papers. Her comments were always insightful and often encouraged me to do outside research because I was so interested in the subject.

14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
I wish i could learn more of the class as it shouldn't be shorter semester
-- snipped --
moree hands on work
Perhaps do not number people off into groups, like she did towards the end of the semester. Many people were unhappy, having to switch up group members, often making them feel uncomfortable talking to new people.
not really
Personally, i loved it and learned a lot! No changes needed
I suggest be a bit more strict with some of the students. It annoyed me to no end having to sit there and watch the five "culinary arts" boys barge in and rudely interrupt the entire class. Also, I suggest handing back assignments with feedback so that we may know how to improve anything that needs improvement.
Include a greater variety of activities.
Discuss problems in Japan
Maybe some more papers, presentations, quizes on chapters might show the student that the class is a class worth focusing on. Although Mrs. Shepherd gave us a lot of assignments, I didn't feel like I was doing a whole lot in class. I did learn a lot though.
More physical get togethers.
Better support materials which are current and relevant. Answering questions at the end of a chapter was a big part of the class, yet the book seemed behind the times and written for someone who already had a basic understanding of the Japanese and Japanese culture. Sometimes confusing for a 100 level course. Instructor's solution, just don't answer questions that don't make sense to you. If each student gets to decide which questions to answer how do you effective grade the work.

15. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
no
I like her teaching methods.
Love her!
I understand that you were trying to get the rest of the class involved. I tried my best, but it seemed like the only ones who wanted to be involved were about four or five people. The rest of the twenty or so students had no intention of speaking their minds, which must have been very frustrating for you.
The teacher is great and I really had a good time in class.
Satisfactory
Strong teaching methods, pretty effective in my opinion. Not very motivating for the student though.
good
I think that Professor Shepherd is an amazing professor, and she really made me enjoy the class, even if it was online.
Personally I thought they were excellent. She is an accomplished professor in her field having spent time and taught school in Japan, and I think HCC is lucky to have her.
Liked that feedback was always helpful and encouraging. I would have liked grading to be done in a more timely manner, but understand that there are many students. I also don't think there should be multiple chances for students to turn in late assignments. This is not fair to those who do work on time.
I thoroughly enjoyed the class.
None.
Professor Shepherd cares about her students and Japanese culture and it shows. When she recognized that I was interested in studying my own culture, she took the time to recommend additional readings for me and also answered any questions or thoughts I had on the subject. I was afraid that this course would be dry, but it was quite the opposite. Professor Shepherd made learning about Japanese culture more than just an academic experience, it made me feel like I was learning about myself.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
The in-class discussions kept me participating in class.
It was very fascinating and informative. I liked learning something beyond our conscious mind and understanding more about myself and also about my dreams. I also liked that we didn't do so much book work.
Very intresting topics
I thought it very interesting and helpful to have done our mid-term project on psychological issue, such as (mine) a personality disorder. It helped me to really research and find out more about the different kinds of personality disorders out there, and why people do have psychological issues.
I liked our group discussions we had in class and i enjoyed ms. shepherd's teaching
There were many class discussions and group projects and it was all very helpful in having to learn the subject.

I think her teaching methods are great because it's not all about the book and it was more personal. We get a chance to talk about ourselves and hear stories about our other classmates.
It was confusing because there wasn't a schedule to follow. I didn't know what subject we were on in the class most of time.
good
I think Sherry Shepherd is a terrific and very intelligent teacher! I think her teaching methods through lectures and group work our effective and i learned as much as i could in this semester.
I believe Ms. Shepherd is a one of a kind teacher. She makes her students feel comfortable in being a part of her class.
I really enjoy Sherry as a teacher and consultant I am most certainly looking forward to taking her again soon.
Too much leniency leads to slacking.. I noticed that throughout the semester you could count on only half of the students showing up for class.
Really good and her teaching method helped the students learn faster!

I would have liked a more in-depth look at the subject matter, and to have seen a little more use of the recommended text.
I really enjoyed this class, I felt relaxed and stress free while being in the class room during this class!

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I really liked the class and learned a lot. I never knew about buddism and so glad I took the class. It really opened my eyes to spirituality vs. religion. I liked the movies, group projects, and deep discussions.
I really enjoyed the discussions about the asian/eastern side of things. I just wish at the begining of the course we could have made a rule " if its not asain/eastern then you cant talk about it."
This was a great class. Sherry is a wonderful teacher. She allowed everyone to feel safe, and to open up to the rest of the class. She made everyone feel respected and like they had been heard. She has a great presence that makes people want to listen to her. I liked that we were able to hear so many people talk, classes usually don't provide so many points of view.
I enjoyed all of the class presentations. I also enjoyed all of the great videos and documentaries.
I enjoyed our class discussions, watching meaningful documentaries, and Sherry's masterful teaching style.
Discussions were interesting, and gave insight into the different ways other students percieve religion and spirituality.
Nice class environment. Discussing religion can sometimes feel a little intimidating, but that was not the case in this class. Everyone's opinions were respected.
The openness of free speech and the respectfulness of the teacher.
The subject matter was appropriate towards my degree so it was great. We looked at different aspects of Asian religion and their practices. It opened my eyes towards what was out there.
This was a very interesting class I learned alot.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
No.
nope, it was a great class overall
I would do more field trips.
no
Lets do some activities that get us moving.
no. keep it the way it is.
Some of the material was a little to slow for my tastes. I would have liked to see more class discussions.

16. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
I like them.
excellent
I liked her methods. I think that the class responded well to her. We did something different every week and that kept everyone's attention.
Excellent! Provided a comfortable environment to share ideas.
Good, but for those who have a short attention it maybe be difficult.
I thought that her method was good teaching because I learned a lot through the lectures, discussions, videos, and the readings that we had been assigned.
I felt she did an excellent job of teaching this class.
I loved how i felt no pressure and was able to work at my own pace.
Excellent teacher. Professor Shepard is a great teacher and it shows in her course work also. I took her class before so I knew this previously. A great asset to the school.
I really liked her teaching methods.

The middle path, acceptance of others paths.
Thinking of some silly jesus poetry and giggling to myself. "Its 'cause Buddah is just like Jesus." hehehe
Some of the other students were quite the characters. I'll also take the mountain with me.
The lesson to choose words carefully and let others be free to feel however they feel about their religion and/or spirituality.
That all spiritual traditions have something to teach for those who will listen.
a reminder that people all feel differently about what they belive in, and what considered truth for themselves.
The lessons in life that i have learned, and the respect i have for philosophy.
My introduction towards the Asian religions. I hope that this is a great foundation for my degree.
The understanding I gained of different religions and different people.

This class was both fun and educational. Professor Shepherd has so much knowledge of Asian Religions; before I took this class I knew very little about any of them. She is open minded and allows the students to express their thoughts and questions every day in class. I loved coming to her class.
Thank you Sherry! Hope to take more of your classes!
I highly recommend this class.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
Some of the things that I liked most about this class was the class work. Every day we would read about the Japanese people or the environment in Japan. Learning about Japan and its people was fun and very informational. Professor Shepherd had a lot of background information about Japan and that is what made the lessons so interesting.
OUTSIDE MEDITATION
i think the field trip at the Buddhist temple was nice.
Loved hearing Sherry's experiences of her life in Japan. Learning from someone who actually lived there was so much better and meaningful than having a teacher who only learned about it. I'm taking her ASAN RELIGION class next semester. Loved our field trip day! It was something I've never experienced before and probably never would have if not for this class.
It was very informational.
i liked learning about japanese culture and the field trip we as a class took to the relic temple. ms. shepherd helped me understand the japanese mind a lot better
Sherry was a greatly knowledgeable instructor whos personal expereince made the course much more enjoyable.
The assignments helped me relate to the subject. I like how the assignments brought out my deepest thoughts/feelings about each topic. It was also interesting to hear other people's perspectives too.
She was helpful and gave great feedback on the subject matter.
What a wonderful course! Everything I learned in ASAN 120 with Sherry has really opened my eyes to the world of Japanese Culture. All course material was relevant and insightful.
I enjoyed Dr. Sheppards writings a great deal. We were occasionally lucky enough to have some of her writings incorporated into our sessions.
Mrs. Shepherd did an outstanding job teaching this course. Enjoyed the class and would recommend this course to other students. Great instructor and class.
I loved everything about this course! Professor Shepherd is a great person, very easy to talk to, and very intelligent on the subject matter of this course. The assignments were thorough, interesting, and fun!
What I like about this course is the teacher. She is very understandable about personal life.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
NONE
i think making different activities will interest the students more about the Japanese culture.
It would be helpful to have a syllabus that was a bit more clearly put together. Also, in group session, it would be best to mix and max the students so that everyone can get to know one another in class more.
Needs to be more interesting and have more activities.

Very nice and sweet teacher.
Dr. Shepherd is a great teacher, who is very knowledgable on the subject. She made it obvious that she is always willing to help her students. It was interesting to hear her many life experiences related to the subject.
Sherry was a wonderful and patient professor. She knows her stuff, and she really cares about her students. Thank you, Sherry!
Dr. Shepard is quite a unique instructor. It was great that she posted a little something to the students at the start of the assignment. It had to do with what we were studying and her own opinion about such. She always commented on each assignment and individually. She is never negative.....always positive comments on our reflections.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I liked the class as whole. The group activities helped get to know eachother to work together. I learned a lot about myself and why I am the way I am. I learned so muh about how different cultures are and why each country has their own way of growing up in society. The projects taught me a lot about what goes on in the area that I live in and why traditions are brought down from generation to generation. I liked that it made me think about my future ahead of me and that I should always listen to my own intuition.
I really enjoyed Sherry's teaching style. She was well informed and I would recommend her class to anyone.
I enjoyed everything we did in that class (group projects, informative videos, pot-luck and the speaker that was brought in was interesting also)What I liked most was Professor Shepherd is very informative about the course study, Japanese Culture.I enjoyed hearing of all her different experinces during her stay in Japan. I also liked the group format thing we had;in the begining of the semester Professor Shepherd had us break into 5 different groups and we stuck with the same group through the entire semester. We did everything with the same group:Discussions, Projects, Presentations, etc. I liked that format because for me, it's been my experience that I usally get screwed whenever it comes to group projects, where I'm the guy getting stuck carrying the ball or doing most of the work. But I found with this format mostly everyone basically took turns or helped pickup the slack when someone was out sick or had some other personal event to take care of...
I learn many new culture aspects and also meet new friends. We participate in activities as a group and present it to know what each culture and religion of the subject is. I learn alot and has shown me a new ways to give ideas to other students who is willing to take the class.
group activities were lots of fun!
Enjoyed getting into groups and working together
The overall layout of the course was excellent. The group work was extremely enjoyable and helped to promote class discussions. Learning from others as well as the instructor gave the class an interesting twist. I thoroughly enjoyed this class.
The way the material was presented really helped me to understand the Japanese Culture.
The thing I liked most about this course is that we had to be involved with our classmates. I myself learn well with others so it was good for me. I got to hear what my classmates thought about the subject we were learning and it was refreshing to let out my own opinions.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
...Although I liked the "one group-entire semester concept" it did however not really let you get to know everyone in the entire class. You din't get to interact with anyone else just the four to five people in your group. Maybe have everyone rotate groups halfway through or maybe have groups against groups kind of thing. Another thing I would suggest is maybe an instructor scheduled field trip to somewhere of Japanese Culture significance. It's hard to get everyone to agree on ONE day that fits into EVERYONE's schedule, it never works out. So I say the instructor should pick the date and time and stick it into the class schedule before the course even starts, and have everyone else(students) make it work with there schedule. That's all I got everything else was perfect.

The films we wtch help me to learn more ablut the different religions.
EVERYTHING, I really enjoyed taking Dr. Shepherds class. Many questions have been answered that I was confused about. I've also learned a lot about different religions that I never knew. Awsome Professor!
I enjoyed being able to watch videos and see the other religions hands on rather than just reading it from the text. It allowed me to read the text and than see the video which gave me better understanding and clarity.
Interesting class, knowledgeable instructor

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I loved the movie watching. Not just for the fact that we got to watch movies but the way we had to write our papers after watching the movies. Professor Shepherd asked us to write a reflection which gives us freedom to express how WE felt about the movie & how it connects to Japanese culture the way WE saw it. I also liked reading & working in groups instead of independently for some things because you get to see other students insights on things & bring in more prospectives that you wouldnt think of on your own. We got to research more on certain subjects which led us to learn more about what we need to cover.
I really liked Sherry Sensei's variety of teaching techniques, it was really effective and made learning interesting and fun.
wat i love about this class is that we always do group work which is fun because we have to work as one group and also talk about our assignment. Also i like that we always watch a movie that describe a lot of things about japanese culture. Ms Shepherd you are a good teacher and i learn a lot of lesson from you about japan=]] THANK YOU=]]
I just liked the fact that I learned so much about Japanese Culture.
I liked how we overall sticked to doing group activity to encourage open mindedness as we interact with different people and working together in learning the material.
I really enjoyed how she made us work together yet, we had to think individually but the chance of working with peers was a plus. Projects like presentations were something i enjoyed.
i liked watching the movies and the group activities we did. she is an awesome teacher.
This course is an excellent view of the people of japan. This class taught me the similarities I make to those of Japanes descent. I think there should be more classes available to this subject and I commend this professor of teaching a class to the "T" which is not her original major.
I really enjoyed learning about the Japanese culture, their beliefs, and their way of thinking. The projects were very fun and assignments were fairly easy to complete. Overall, a class worth recommending!
Liked the information that was taught.
I enjoyed the group activities that we had done. It enhanced my learning skills and helped me to understand more about this one particular subject. I got to see everyone's opinion on how they felt even when I didn't understand.
i got to learn abqout japanese culture. And how life was uin japan.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
More activities, outdoors or bring food day!
More class work would motivate students to attend class more often and take the course more seriously.
Maybe having the whole class in more conversations in sharing ideas and knowledge of the Japanese culture, of whatever material they learned, giving an opportunity to move around and think.

I though this class was going to be boring but it was so much fun! Keep up the good work!
I'm glad I took this course in further my understanding of Japanese Culture.
Excellent job professor and if you teach another other courses I will be sure to take it.-joe-
This course has really taught me a lot about the Japanese culture. I came into it blind and now I understand the way they think, talk, and act towards each other. It has taught me about the different special occasions the Japanese celebrate and about some of the material things the Japanese cherish.
i love this class.
