13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I liked the readings that were done in class, I felt they were appropriate. I also liked the fact that we discussed issues towards assignments and or quiz questions. I liked the assignments and I was glad that there was not any group projects involved :) I also liked the fact that Mike showed us our grades frequently throughout the semester to let the class know where they were when it came to improving their grade, quizzes and or assignments.
He makes class interesting. will refer him to others
Very informative.
This is a very interesting course, I got to learn a lot of things that I didn't know of. Dr. Lemmons is a very fun instructor, he's a very interesting guy, understanding and clear about things and the way he wants it, very easy going but sturdy.
The lectures were fascinating, really brings a new perspective about reality.
the movies he showed
I had a hard time doing assignments in this class and when it doesnt turn in on time assignments u get behind and that is what makes it hard assignments and test come right after another
Assignment format was a positive experience. Good powerpoint.
I liked that the quiz's questions were pulled directly from the study guide. It showed us what to expect and how to prepare properly.
I liked the assignments, they were easy to understand
we always knew exactly what to expect. everything was laid out clearly from the beginning.
I really liked the books that we were assigned, it just opened my eyes to different parts of the world, home seems so small, but learning about different cultures allowed me to think and evaluate more open minded.
I didn't know what anthropology is before I took this class. It was a required course, and I enjoyed it. There is so much in American society that keeps people separate I think it's important to know ways to look at different cultures and have it be OK that they are different. I was very happy to hear what the current anthropological viewpoint is on indigenous cultures. Maybe if Western culture can adopt more indigenous perspectives there might be hope for humanity's survival. I REALLY like that you post your Power Points on Laulima! It made note taking much easier thereby freeing up mental space to listen to what you were saying.
Nice powerpoints
I liked that the instructor taught us a lesson then after the lesson he shared a video about the lesson so we would understand what we learned better.
It was very detailed. Their was alot of information.
The study guides were help full and imformative. I liked watching the film. The lectures were relevent and helped me further my understanding.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
I did not like the fact that there was so much questions on the study guide. It felt a bit overwhelming at times. I feel that the extra credit film questions should be worth more than 2 points. I feel that with the amount of time and work you have to put in for one film paper is worth much more than 2 extra credits, it would have given me more of an incentive to do them. But with that being said, I will be doing the extra credit film questions.
Go in order sometimes jumps around to much.
We should ave a review day before our quiz!
Yes, the books Dr. Lemmons introduced to his students this semester should be picked up by Hawaii Community College and the University of Hawaii. The titles of these books are The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down it's about a Hmong Child, and NISA The Life and Words of a !Kung Woman, and Mirror for Humanity by Conrad Philip Kottak. These books had a lot I have learned from this semester and I recommend them.
Longer time-limits during quizzes to reduce stress.
HE shows to many slides and talks the whole class time information overload
No so much to improve the course, but as a student of 2 classes from the same professor, I found that both classes had assignments and tests on the same day. I think that if the two workload due dates were separated the student workload would be more manageable. For example if SOC assignments and test was on tues and ANTH assignments and test due on thurs, it would be more digestible from a student standpoint.
The only suggestion I would have would be to get some type of feedback on the study guide prior to the test. That way, the students will know whether or not they're studying the wrong answers tot he material.
You should assign a day to review and go over the study guide a class before the quiz. I'm pretty sure it would improve everyone's quiz grade.
no,
shorter powerpoints?
Mike you had asked for feedback about what didn't work in the class. The most common negative response I heard, when talking to fellow students, was the frustration people experience when you go back and forth in the Power Point slides. It gets confusing so it's hard to know what notes to write where, which leads to frustration.
nopppeeee
More activities
Maybe cut down on the amount of writing to do on each assigmnent. It felt a bit much.
I did not like the section on Families, Kinship, & Marriage; Gender &Sex; Race&Ethnicity because I thought it was alot to manage and understand. I thought the study guide was complicated and i have less understanding on these chapters then the other topics we covered. Maybe it is because it came at the end of the semester or becasue i felt like it was more to cover. That section was my least favorite subject mater. I would suggest more engaging examples or activities

Great course and great teacher

Dr. Lemmons keep up your hard work and thank you for putting up with a student like me in need of special help. I appreciate you very much, again thank you for understanding and having patience.
Well structured class, Professor Lemons is an excellent teacher and very active, makes learning fun. One suggestion to students, do the work. As long as you do the work, you'll pass. You cannot just "wing it", if you want an A then study for the quizzes and do the homework assignments.
recommend a recorder so u dont miss anything
Excellent professor.
Great class! I learned a lot!
it was a pleasure.
I've heard people say anthropology is boring; they don't see what it has to do with their life, or their major. I think it's obvious that the more we learn about other people, how similar we all are and that our differences are mostly cultural (therefore beliefs or viewpoints and are changeable), the better equipped we are to interact with others that we'll meet in life. I think it's because people are so disconnected, from each other and from Nature, that that's not obvious to some so I guess it would be good to ask "how does this effect your life?" to get them thinking about it that way. I think your choice of "Spirit Catches..." is an excellent one. It gives an example of an ethnology, Asian cultures are "close to home" for many HawCC students, it's set in a more current time (than Nisa) so maybe the really young students can relate better, and it talks in depth about the medical profession which is something everyone should know about - either as someone going into the profession to avoid of some of the dangers one can do, or as someone receiving care so they can protect themselves.

I really enjoyed having Mike as a teacher. His lectures are exellent and he makes everything easy to understand. I would recommend anyone to take his class

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
Good assignment format and PowerPoints.
the concepts of capitalism and how it affects each and every human being, the minority, that is. capitalism is what had overthrown our Hawaiian Monarchy
Dr. Lemons used clips from movies in class to give a better idea of subject matter. He also had us do mini presentations, wich forced us to read and present information to the class.
I like the videos.
i liked errythang.. learnin is amusing to me, i liked the powerpoints and film clips.
the assignments were relevant to the lectures. maybe for a final, it can be something other than the global games.
His lectures were very informational and his slides were very interesting and "not boring". I liked that he gave us a chance to have a study guide before the test. Also, I liked that he was available outside of classroom hours to help, if we needed it. He also gave a lot of examples in class to help us understand the subjects he was teaching.
I like the assignments
Everything except mini presentations
The course was good that we were able to find all the information in the materials and text he gave us. I liked that he would give us a study guide where there was a lot of questions but on the test he cut it down. It gave me a lot of help in studying for the test. Also it was nice that he gave assignments letting us choose what questions or part we would like do. He is very flexible.

I enjoyed all the extra credit opportunities
I really like how the powerpoints are on laulima and that I can access it beforehand. I also really like the way our lectures coincides with video sections.
I have no real opinion on the work given except for the fact that the work load was fair and that it was not too heavy or too light.
I liked the videos, there was an interesting diverse amount of topics covered in this course.
The interesting point of views of society and how history and every group has interacted to create society how it is today.
this course is how we as students become familliar with the system. this system is all there really is. this world has no use for people with good hearts, only people with money decide what success is.Mr. Lemons instruction helped me to see a line of success for myself.
The teacher, his teaching ways,
There was only 4 homework assignments in the course.
This course was very informative.
Assignment werent to hard but at the same time in order to do them you would have to pay attention in class. I liked all our projects.
Mike provided informational power point chapter slides. I liked the in-class mini presentations by students. I enjoyed his informal methods of teaching the course.
Loved this class, wish you were teaching anthropology next semester!
The instructor is funny and enthusiastic. Assignments and quizzes are straight forward!
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
Organize slides better, it was hard to find information when working on assignments. You also seemed to flip back in the power point a lot to find slides when you were lecturing.
nope
it gets tiring having to listen to a lecture for an hour and 15 minutes
I liked the course overall, however, although the semester is very short, I felt like there was a lot of "jumping around," meaning we would be on one subject, then jump to another different subject, to another. Example: Read from the book, then jump to learning something different in the powerpoint slides, to mini-presentations, to watching film sections (which were all different from each other). I was getting overwhelmed and confused at times. Moving forward, I think it would be a better idea to stay on one subject, finish it, then jumped to the next subject. Instead of having 4 subjects mixed in one sitting/class. Example: "Strictly" Mini-presentation "week" would have been better then spreading it through-out the whole course, because everyone would have been on the same level with their topics, causing more interaction/debates. But overall, it was a very informational course. I enjoyed his lectures and the information that was given. I learned a lot. Great stepping stone.
None
Organize the PowerPoints
He should give a little more time for the assignments.
Yes, this course could be improved a lot by the teaching methods of the information that is trying to be processed to understand the course. This class is very slow steady and a non interesting subject to stand and be listening too. This class is like a sleep class which makes you want to sleep because of the way he teaches. Improvements? Yes a lot and please make the work more interesting for the student so the information actually sits in.
Calm down about the attendance
Maybe have longer video section because some parts would've helped me understand some content more.
The study guides were slightly too long and felt more like busy work rather than an actual studying. Having more questions in the study guide is fine, but there is a point where it is too much. Also it is not very clear as too what is wanted for answers in the quizzes.
I would have liked to see more of the videos instead of sections of them. Also there were times when I felt uncomfortable in your class due to the personal topics we covered, some things are better left out of the classroom. Like discussions about menstruation. Awkward.
No.
"Ain't No Making It" thumbs down
Nope not really
Make the speeches a little bit more interesting.
I suggest that he doesn't talk so much. It makes the class boring.
Nothing. I think this class was great.

You are a great teacher and. Though I feel as though there are a few problems with some of the quizzes where I feel that I am not 100% on what kind of answers you are looking for. An answer that I feel that is a clear enough, is not clear enough to you. Maybe go into a lot more depth as to what you are looking for. Though I am partially to blame by not meeting with you more.

Awesome class
I think that humor and enthusiasm for the subject being taught is essential to communicating the material.
favorite class. actually learned something.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
Over all good and very laid back class
Field trips
the movies
I honestly liked everything about this course. The topic is so current and real that I can't imagine not enjoying learning about it. The variety of methods to learn included films and documentaries, articles of magazines and journals, his lectures and presentations, and field trips. I enjoyed how we would complete a whole section before turning in one large assignment and being tested on it. This allowed me to focus on understanding the content and material while in class, instead of being distracted by multiple assignments. A lot of the content was viewed in terms of the big-picture and it was important to be focused and listening actively to capture the point and what it meant. The quizzes and assignments being due and taking place on the same day also helped me to understand the content better because I studied and worked more in-depth to accomplish both tasks. I like that my class size was small, with only 5 people on this side of the VIDCON. We worked together to understand and I actually learned a lot from discussing things in the class with them. We were all really focused because we were determined to get a good grade in this class, even if the teacher wasn't right in front of our face. I liked that field trips were available for extra credit, and one was required as part of the class. They were all really relevant to the class and the things we were learning at the time. I like that this class was available on VIDCON with Hilo because I couldn't have taken it any other way.
The subject of the class was interesting. I found that I learned a lot of things that I otherwise wouldn't have bothered with such as the Cycle of Stuff and fair labor wages. The assignments kinda sucked. I found myself focusing more on answering the study guides and film qs than actually learning.
I enjoyed the films that he showed in class. It was a fun and easier way to learn about the course materials.
I like that this course focuses on perspective. Dr. Lemons does a fantastic job bringing in various resources from different perspectives and students to make a completely comprehensive class focused on the upbringing of technology from its roots of sticks and stones. The assignments in Dr. Lemons class are focused on analysis. He assists in helping us analyze things we hear in the news or on the internet to detect misconceptions and social ignorance. He cares about our understanding. He will spend as much time as necessary to ensure that we have made some sort of progress in understanding the material.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
Nope. I liked this class so keep it the same.
I suggest that you don't teach at Kona side anymore. When ever you taught there, the class always stalled by 30 minutes. Also, it was VERY hard to understand what was being viewed in the Videos because the sound was always muffled and bad quality.
No.
no
More Kona field trips. Also, having one field trip in the evening. At 3 or 4 or something, since most students work (I think). Get solidified for tours at the Puna Geothermal Plant!
Equal field trip rights. I am very upset that Hilo had 54856413524 opportunities and we had one. Otherwise, no complaints.
I am not a big fan of HITS classes and this class was no different. The technology connection between the Kona and Hilo classes needs improvement. Somehow, there are always sound or picture image problems. It was difficult sometimes to hear or see the film on the screen. As for Mike.. He needs to work on being more polite to his students. Sometimes he plays favoritism with his classes and I don't think it's fair to the students. There is an inequality between the two sides, Hilo and Kona. Mike tends to baby the Hilo class while he bashes on the Kona students. I don't think it's appropriate for a teacher to tell his students that he wants to shoot us in the head for "giving a dumb answer". I thought school was all about learning and if we're discussing material, why do we have to be right? He's suppose to be the one teaching us and it's okay to get a wrong answer. Haven't you heard of E for effort? The Kona students always try to spit out answers as soon as their ask. Unlike the Hilo students, they are quite mute. It's really confusing to see because shouldn't it be easier to learn when the instructor is right in front of you? I think that Mike needs to practice on his communication skills with his students and maybe reconsider his instructional abilities.
I believe that this course covers incredibly interesting subject mater. However, I don't believe that all of the students are capable of taking this course. This course does not have any prerequisite courses. I believe that there needs to be at least an English minimum. There are people in our class that can't repeat information they saw in a video 5 minutes prior and other students that are looking forward to completing an undergraduate degree and more.

Mike's hilarious and passionate about what he is teaching.
Dr. Lemons is an incredibly enthusiastic teacher. He loves to explore the things he talks about but I believe he is put in a difficult position. He is posed with the problem of catering to students in Hilo and Kona that have different levels of educational intent and interest. Dr. Lemons is one of the best teachers I've had as a student. He is fun and enjoyable to be around. If I were attending Hawaii CC next semester I would sign up for another one of his classes without hesitation.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I felt the texts were all relevant. Micheal Lemons was enthusiastic and had a good teaching style.
he uploads powerpoints for us to study at home.
eh. not much. basic lecture class. whatevs.
what i liked about the course was the fact that we never really had assignments and all we really had to do was write response papers and film write ups.
Had fun, I don't know if this counts as a lecture class because it was a lot smaller than lectures that I'm used to, but it was cool. Thanks for all the feedback on my tests and response papers, even though some of it was biting and embarrassed me, but helped me learn. Good luck... DOCTOR Lemons.
I liked the straight forward lesson plan and all the access to the resources because he isn't trying to get us to sweat so much as work to understand the material. His point system seems to be very effective and your grade is entirely in your own hands.
The movies and the power points
I liked the class. The readings were very good although the text book was really boring. But it was good to read it so a person could fallow the instructor easier.
Lectures were very interesting and relevant to the testing.
everything about this course.
I like the power points that mr. lemon used during our class. It helps us a lot especially the response paper. He pushing us to read the book to answer the questions.keep it up! and thank you..
Great instructor! even if i was deaf I would be able to understand the course. HE is extreamly expressive and passionate, great Power points. Simple organization of class material-Power points-study guide-response questions and film response. Greatful for the accessability and his use of LAulima.
I like that we were not overloaded with hw and projects but we still learned the subject very well. Professor Lemons is also very fair with tests and will only put stuff we covered on the tests. He is also willing to answer questions and explains it well so you can understand. I highly recommend this class.
I liked how the powerpoints were posted on Laulima to help me study for quizzes and help me fill out response papers.
The instructor was smart, engaged and humorous. I don't think that anyone in my class was bored, disengaged, or left the class less educated, much less not entertained and thinking. The reading material was specific to the course and well presented. And a bit challenging. Study guides were to the point and helpful. Questions for response papers were also to the point and required specific answers. The course was well-paced and kept us all on our toes.
I like Mike's teaching style
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
tell mike bring cookies to class for us
none.
the only suggestion is to have a little more assigments as a way to bring up our grade
NA
I would like to see shorter responses but that is some of the only work so I am very happy with this course.
No suggestion
The text book was boring. Sometimes the instructor would jump around to much and it was hard to fallow what he was talking about. I would get lost in his lectures because I did not always understand where he was in his lecture. To much jumping around.

NO..EVERYTHING IS PERFECT!!!
Waaaay too much time spent on the introduction of the class, so intricate it left me in a state of confusion. My classmates kept asking me questions and i asked them-nobody got it. (total waste of time) suggestion, spend 30minutes going over it & keep the takehome test(clever)THEN be done with it!
Well, I was confused at first on the whole online-system and submission, and how I had to know everything about assignments on my own.
None spring to mind.

All in all good learning course.
I really learned a lot in this class. I liked the movies you showed and the power points were helpful. Thanks!
It was a good class.
Quite an interesting class!

Hmmm..all students are non english speakers but i want to suggest that sometimes the teacher have to use more easy way srategies to those non-english speaker students..
Not everyone feels comfortable calling you by your first name! I don't know the instructor like that. Not on a personel level. Mr. Lemons or Professor is appropriate, he shouldn't out rule it. It is a sign of respect, an anthropologist should know it.
Overall it was a very good and interesting class! (:
Mike Lemons did an excellent job of introducing us not only to the concepts and study of Cultural Anthropology, but how it might reflect our world. Kudos.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
It was a great learning experience and I really learned a lot this time around in college. I would recommend this class to others That want to help the enviornment
I liked the subject matter of the course, and the way Mike chronologically presented things. The projects were do-able and helped prepare me for the test we had. I especially like the field trips, which allow you to add some extra credit points and see some cool places. It's a very interesting class.
Most things are accessible online, lots of interesting documentaries and field trips
Field trips
I like the videos
I liked getting to visit sustainable places like Laakea Farms because we then our class had a better understanding about how people who try to live off of only the land are living.
Mr. Lemons gave us waaaaaaay tooo muuuch homework. He doesn't realize that we have other classes that also give us plenty of homework. I think that the amount of homework that he gave was ridiculously overwhelming and I wish next semester he would tone it down.
The Corporation, The Business of Being Born, Guns, Germs, and Steel, and a few of the National-Geographic articles.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
N/A
Sometimes Mike's power point slides were out of order, but I think that he will have it down next year. Maybe some class room activities to help focus the class.
Sometimes the readings were really long
Not really
Out of all my classes in school, I learned the most in his class, on his field trips and through the YOUTUBE movies that I watched. He was very informative, very helpful, very knowledgeable about the course material. He knows his stuff. But his homework is overwhelming.
Need better time-management. Run out of time too much. It can be difficult to attend field trips for people working, live far away, etc.
15. Other comments:
Everything about the class is a great learning experience and there are so many things that I learned about our enviornment and the world itself. Its shocking to know all of the things I saw even on our field Trips
Loved the class overall. Not too hard but definitely not easy. Cool instructor!
Your da bomb lemons
You da bomb mike!
I love Mr. Lemons he is a great teacher, but because of his overwhelming homework I don't think I would take his class again, and I would strongly tell others not to, unless they love sitting up til 1am doing homework. I think if he tuned down his homework, he would be awesome as a Social Science teacher, I loved his class.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
Work was difficult but he is a good teacher so I was able to do good.
I liked everything about this class! I loved the amount of organization and the clear expectations of the students. The slides were not boring and the examples were interesting. Open discussion in class was fun too!
I loved how organized this class was. I don't think I have ever had a class so well organized in my college career and I really enjoyed it. I thought the Ethnographys where interesting and relevant.
i liked the videos
i really liked the response papers.
Like the way the tests and write ups are set up.
I liked how it was played out. It was a good environmental for me to concentrate. I really loved how he learn everyone names. It feels more better than just a random student and feel like your just another burden to a teacher.
The videos that he showed tended to be very interesting.
i like that i learnt alot from this class also the teacher is funny and it wasnt boring.
I like the course period. I also enjoyed the La'akea trip, those people were friedly and interesting.
i liked a lot of shit about this course. the instructor especially because he is what made this class fun to learn, i liked it. the quizes and work was alright.
I really liked the consistency of the assignments and tests. Every chapter we had the same type of assignments. This was a very structured class. I also like that all the resources were available on Laulima, and we were able to turn in our papers through Laulima. I also like the grading system and the opportunities for extra credit.
I liked that the power points were posted online so that we had access when we needed and that we were given a test review were extremely helpful during tests. I also liked how the books and movies that were read correlated with what was learned in class.
I liked that he made us fill out study guides that would help us on our quizzes. I also liked that he gave us enough time to study what we had to. I liked that he is well organized and always prepared for class. I like his grading policy. Good job Mike!
Thanks for pushing me I learned allot from your class. I think you found your niche in life. You got a gift to give these kids that's worth more then money. Write a book or something in your spare time for money. Teachers don't make enough but it does give you allot of days off. Thanks for teaching me how collage works. Daniel Silva
I liked learning from other cultures and how his lectures were presented in a very understandable way.
I enjoyed Mikes interesting lectures. Every class we were presented with new and relevant information.
It was a bit of a routine. Quizzes and response papers. But in all honesty, routines like this makes it easier to understand the material.
I like that Mike lectures with power points. It gives you something to use as a reference.
Mike is a great teacher, he's passionate about the subject, you know where you stand with your grade at all times, there is extra credit offered always, and the class is challenging. Mike is funny too.
i think that this course was interesting in some way but i didnt get to understand it because it was hard to manage what mike was doing and i really have respects for him but he is a good teacher and he teaches well and its good.
I felt like the material was a little more extensive then absolutely necessary, although it was very interesting. I think there were more important facts that could the class could have spent more time on. Getting good scores was difficult. I enjoyed the topics we touched up on, and felt like I have gained a strong understanding in it, but my grade does not reflect that.
awesome great teacher. Not boring at all!
I Liked how the study guides were the same as the test and it was very helpful because we know that it is not going to be any different. Printing out the slides was helpful and it made me have a better understanding to what I was learning.
Style of teaching . Down to earth.
Mike was awesome!!! Very good teacher! Very good at lecturing! Good talking skills! Awesome semester!!!! Keep it up Mike!
I like how expressive he was when describing the material and he made the information interesting.
I enjoyed the Quiz #6 on gender
that we got a study guide and had to fill it all out so if we studied that, we would have no problem on the test.
nothing!
it was easy.
I think it is interesting but to much work must be done. How they did the grading with the whole points. I can't make it up to a very high score in order to pass, but thankful for all the extra credit.
I liked how there was a quiz and response paper homework due every other week; this allowed us to slowly get information we needed and able to finish it in a appropriate amount of time. I also liked how ouw quizzes are half of the questions off of study guides we're given; that way we know what's going to be on the quiz and we're able to also learn plenty AND get a good grade.
It was an interesting subject, plus the challenge being its a video online class..but, overall it was reasonable and managable at the same time. the workload wasn't that bad because we were given a good amount of time to turn in our assignments. Mike is a very enthuastic intructor and would like to take his class in the long run again. i enjoy his class.
I liked that Mike would spend a class period to go over the power point which was almost everything on the study guide which would get us a better grade on the quizes, if we payed attention.
Like the idea there were not required reading material about subject. picked up two of the books---probably material for master's course, four hundred pages in each book.
the enthusiasm about teaching anthropology to use students.
great instructor!
Mike lemons was very effective in providing relative images allowing me to apply the concepts taught in the class to daily life. His lectures, particularly on the book readings allowed me to gain empathy and greater understanding of other cultures and concepts. i believe this helps me grow as student and person, also providing insight in my future work with the medical patients i will encounter. i like the Laulima usage utilized by this professor and felt that he was very attentive and efficient with providing feedback, guidance, and progress reports. i also felt that the Powerpoints prepared by the professor were easy to absorb and assisted greatly in comprehension of topics, providing visual aid in addition to lecture.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
maybe a few other learning styles for people who struggle with visual learning.
no
a study guide for the final would be great fr future students.
Nothing. I believe Mike is doing a well job in educating students. All they have to do is pay attention.
Less work!
none
More anthropological field trips.
nawww
Control obnoxious students better. For example, we were all tired of Paula by the end of the first week.
Maybe use different methods of teaching rather than always using a slideshow.
You got it pretty much down. But you could put in a learning curve in for the AARP crowed on the point system. Like maybe a 10 point head start on these kids.
none, he was a good instructor who made learning easy.
Not that I can think of. Everything was basically spot on.
The course was perfect as far as I was concerned, it was challenging enough, but not too much. Mike explains everything clearly and answers questions clearly.
Get a new instructor.
i have many suggestions is that he should be organized more and grade the papers on time so we know what grade we got for that paper and he should care for the students if they have a doctor's note because i think that is much better for the student can comprehend and then they can work harder to be better in the class. i think it would be nice if he gives people who are out a chance to make up the test and i think he should be more responsible with the work and days we do stuff.
................
I would like to see more field trips that would compliment the course.
I would like to have the lectures to have followed the study guides more closely. I wish the class speed would have went faster. I feel that lectures were often redundant and Mike continually had to repeat himself due to other classmates. I wish Mike put more responsibility on the students to do their work so that we would not have to constantly repeat material. I would like to replace some quizzes with class assignments or projects because I felt burnt out by the final from having too many quizzes. Assignments and or projects would allow breaks from the quizzes and possibly prevent burn-outs.
I felt like I was being minipulated by this clown. I realized that because he was my instructor I had to follow his rules, but I came to realize that not all instructors know what they are doing, and this guy is one of them. I had fallen ill, and was diagnosed with nemonia, and had to come to class because there was no excuses after missing two classes you failed. Even with a doctors excuse he did not care. What I did not like was the way he put deragatory remarks on students papers acusing them of being on drugs, and to this I did challenge him and he said he was sorry. Also the community college needs to be very careful because that field trip we went on the homes were not safe to be in,they had no final inspection, and was totally illegal. They could have been a major law suit if someone was injured, on a class project, which no permission form was needed releasing the school of liability. The La'akea project was worth 4 total extra credit points, but that place was filty, and would not recommand this to other students. As for recommanding Mike, I think the community college needs to take a second look at this instructor who potentially could have put our lives in danger, especially because we were down in Kalapana which is in a lava flow zone. thanks
Make the tests more easier to understand and make the questions not to much intense.
the only thing i can say is that being the otherside of the island, we were limited in class disscusions to be involve. i know its hard to adjust, but more visits to kona would be nice.
The reading was outstanding and kind of boring. Maybe just one book or a book that's more interesting.
Could see how the course entails alot of diciplines. I wouldn't know how to provide feed back on how to tackle this course given it is on the community college level. However, glad Prof. Lemons tried being strict about it. People were falling behind. Man, economy sometimes takes the best out of being a strong student. So, glad Prof. Lemons works with how the class is functioning as a whole during this semester.
none
Maybe you can extend the quiz time to 30 minutes, so that we are not rushing through it.
none
For improving the course, i feel there should be more attention directed to correlating the topics of the course with gaining greater empathy of people. while i was able to grasp this concept, i am not entirely convinced that the rest of the class was able to come to the realization of why this is a required prerequsite for the nursing program. nurses need to take this course so that when in the situation of dealing with outside cultures, language barriers, and different concepts they have the ability to provide patience and understanding for the greater good of the patients.

DONT LEAVE STUPIED COMMENTS ON THE QUIZ PAPERS
I did not like some of the students. But it didnt matter. Mike was an excellent instructor. I do hope to take his classes in the future.
I really enjoyed this class it was interesting! Good job mike!
you a funny guy mister, keep up the work,, hands down one of my favorite teachers bro
For all the faults of white people, they have done some great things for this world. Locals will drive there car talking on there cell phone, talking shit about the haole people. Leading sucks sometimes and no ones perfect White people did there best and are still trying. Locals view whites with enough anger in there hearts and they are a prosecuted minority here. Point out the good more and make it easier on the poor haoles. Because I was a white Portuguese boy growing up in Hawaii I personally know what its like to be prosecuted Hawaiian style.
Thanks Mike for a great introduction to Cultural Anthropology!
Paula was way too annoying. That is all I will say.
I don't like how people in the back would have conversations while Mike was teaching. This person even brought in her noisy kid to class. It is so disrespectful for them to do that. It doesn't feel good for me to be the one who has to say something. Then I am considered a bitch, I just want to be able to focus on what the teacher is saying in a quiet atmosphere. Since when are children allowed in a classroom anyway? My other teacher says to students who are disrespectful "it's my turn to talk".
Mr. Lemons has the knowledge to teach this course, but many times he wasn't prepared and many times he said inappropriate and hurtful words to students. He even wrote inappropriate comments on students papers. Many of my classmates were upset about it and some even went to his superiors and complained about it. It needs to be addressed ASAP!!!

I hope that no one ever takes this fucken class horrible teacher, a sarcastic mother fucken bitch, who needs to keep his tongue shut. I Recommend no one takes his class. maybe another teacher that is not sarcastic offensive, and just plain old stupid.
Great class
I enjoyed the comments given by Mike on my quizzes and response papers. If others felt offended, I do think Mike was just giving it to them straight and treating them like an adult. Mike often had a problem with the class talking for Kona's sake- I think Hilo side should take out the microphones throughout the class so that we do not disturb Kona side when we talk. I liked how our quizzes were based off of our study guides because it made it easier to study, however I do feel it caused me to not pay attention when Mike was not talking about things based off of the study guide.
i felt that he liked to pick on certain people in class.
I would not recommand Mike to any of my friends or students who ask me about him. The community college needs to take the time and review their potential employees, whom students pay to gain as much knowledge as they posibley can. I give this instructor an F for his effort.
Your a great teacher, i just did not feel good about the whole grading
I liked this clas alot; I learned alot and the amount of work was perfect; Mike is a great teacher and I would definately take one of his classes again.
He was a very fun teacher and he was very helpful. I really enjoyed this class because although it was an early one, he made it worthwhile to come to. I have learned so much from him and I am thankful that he made it interesting and not boring. Thank you Mike for being the crazy funny teacher that you are!
overall, class is great. and a good challenge online. i enjoyed it.
Good teacher and always prepared. Only dislike was the amount of reading. I had other classes that required a lot of reading as well so I wasn't able to keep up with all my classes.
I think nursing students shouldn't whine. They flip out on campuses. Man, their like pissed off alpa wolves or something. Give them a special card so they can swipe up stuff around campus. Anything.

it was difficult to be timed for every test. it was the only aspect of the course that i disliked. it had a tendency to apply pressure that left me less inclined to answer test as completely as i otherwise would have.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
what i like about this course is that i've learn so much about technology, humans and other things.
I love the way Mike can connect with the students and assignments are easy to understand and he is very willing to answer any question we have. He is easily reachable and very encouraging.
Promoted critical thinking..assignments allowed creative ideas for assignments..class was entertaining and engaging...made you want to be there to participate..
I enjoyed watching the video's and the field trips that were aviable for extra credit.
The projects and work were interesting and really informative. They were a perfect amount of work and the study guides helped a whole bunch for the tests.
I liked the many chances that were provided for extra credit. I like Mikes availability via email. I loved the fact that he was on it with the laulima assignments.
I enjoyed watching the various documentaries and the field trips.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
I know he has a lot of material to cover but needs to slow down. Sometimes the lecture is like a blur....moves too fast. More class discussion time would be great. But he's a great teacher and I enjoyed the class and material.
NO
Keep up the good work and increase the work load
We did not do a lot of group work. I would suggest doing some in class group work. I suggest in class group work b/c sometimes graded group work is unfair when you have group memebers that either don't contribute or does not show up for meetings. keep the movie sessions, they were interesting... I think doing activies in class, something more hands on.
Less stereotyping of the students.
Your attendance policy should be changed. People who have serious matters should be excused. I think that our grades should be accessable, and that your grading should be a little more on it. If i wanted to know my points as of today, they probably werent up to date with all the material you have from me.
More in class discussion would be beneficial.
15. Other comments:
Lemmons was a fun and interesting instructor presented topics and subject matter in a way that engaged the mind and held the student accountable for his/her learning. Class discussions were fun and promoted interaction among class peers
This was a great class. I learned a lot with in this semseter. Great Job Mike!!
The course is exactly what it was described to be and I learned a lot.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
The instructor had great enthusisam which helped me remain interested in the subject. He was relateable and made the class much more than bareable. He was also willing to give people the chance to do make-up work which in great in the case of emergency.
I enjoyed the reading selections for this class.
Mike gave us, his students, every opportunity to do well as long as you show up to class. Usually I find myself uninterested in classes where teachers lecture the entire time. However, Mike was very eccentric and delivered his lectures in a way that was interesting, and highly absorbable.
I liked the reading and the movies that we watched in class. It was interesting to see how different cultures live, and to see what kinds of rules and laws they had.
I liked how we would have group discussions on some topics for us to have better understanding.
I knew exactly what to do and what was expected. The restrictions (like on word count) made me think harder.
Looking through this course, I learned a lot about different cultures. It made me realise the good parts of the class.
The course material kept me interested!!
I like how you thought us through the power points. It helped me to better understand the subject other than just the teacher speaking.
I liked the books we read for the course. I also liked the videos we watched pertaining to the course.
Great class. I learned a lot. Mike was able to make all of our subject matter very interesting. I enjoyed the power points and the movies. I also like the response papers.
Michael Lemons was always available to answer our questions on the Kona side making it easier to learn things we didnt catch during lecture.
He was a very energetic instructer, easy to listen to! He also gave the Kona side class lots of extra time to ask him questions since he was teaching from Kona. He was a very good teacher!
Mike has an unrivalled passion for this course matterial. Any teacher can have knowlage, but passion and interest is what makes a teacher trully great. Mike oppened a whole new world of ideas that never had occured to me. His corse outline was fluid and thurogh to the point that I could recive a maximum amount of knowlage, while being able to retain everything! I honestly use what was taught not only in other classes as a point of refference, but also in my day to day life. I can honestly say that I wish there were more teachers in the world like him. As a student, I would seriously emplore this school system to give this teacher all the creadit that he deserves.
Awesome class. I learned a lot about cultures. I enjoyed the topics and everything we discussed and learned about.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
I would suggest focusing more on what will be on the quizzes and discussing them more throughly.
Maybe your course a little more difficult or more interactive.
I didn't find there to be much usefulness, as far as retention of course content, from the response papers.
Have more time explaining a section, i felt like i sometimes wasnt able to understand a certain concept because we were running out of time.
Make sure everything on the study guide is covered or the answer can be found in the powerpoint or readings.
Nah
None
Less reading or more time to read the books. More clearer questions on the study guides and book reports.
it felt that as the semester was coming to an end, you were rushing through the quiz prep and information. I really felt like i knew the material and was doing really well on the quizes up until maybe the 5th quiz where i got the worst grade so far. even though i managed a B, it was really hard to fill out my study guide cause i didnt have all of the information needed for it. With the Quiz 6 that were reviewing now, i feel lost..its not that your not covering it, but your jamming 20 minutes of review into 5 minutes just to get through it.
Don't use the 'toilet bowl' award. It only makes the student feel worthless even though the point of it is to help the student do better. I think it doesn't.
Everything was perfect.
I did it through video conference which at times were hard. I would rather have it in person, but no complaints.
15. Other comments:
He is an excellent instructor and should get a raise!!
I enjoyed this class. Thanks Mike have a great Christmas.
Mike is a great teacher with a very upbeat attitude. It is refreshing to find a teacher who is very knowledgable in their field who is also very approachable and helpful.
We all pay BIG money to come to college.... and for him to have invested his time and money in getting a stamp that totally down grades students is awful.... He has built anxiety for test takers... Due to this Toilet Bowl Cleaner Stamp.... Seriously needs to lose the STAMP... Student s being told if they do bad on their work they will be stamped... Totally SAD... His words were... For those of you going for NURSING... if you get a bad grade the stamp will remind you of the career that is ahead of you!... cleaning toilet bowls.....
Overall, Mike was a good teacher. I wouldnt mind taking another class from him.
Teaching method was the one I was most used to, so this class was in my comfort zone.
I enjoyed learning from this professor!!
Thanks for being so awesome! Also thanks for the extra credits and study guides!
Good class.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
all good.
He added his own visuals to presentations and points of view
I like how much extra credit we got because it really helped me with my grade. so thank you!
I enjoyed the project that were assigned to the students. For each assignment I learned something new.
I enjoyed how Hawai'i was incorporated with the rest of the world in the lessons.
I thought Mike Lemons did an excellent job teaching this class. Prior to taking this class, I could care less about the subject, but Mike's passion, and knowledge of the subject made it a really great class! I learned a lot of things in this class that I will take with me for the rest of my life.
I liked being able to refer to the powerpoints that Michael Lemons provided the class with. Without the powerpoints and Michael Lemons lecture, I do not think that I would do as great. He made it easier to learn and less stressful by taking the time to make sure we understood him and making the class fun. I liked being able to answer questions from the films we watched as a group rather than by myself. However, in the event that we were asked a question randomly, Michael did not make us feel uncomfortable. I really liked that about him. He did not make us feel pressured to the point that we did not want to be in his class or did not want to learn anymore. I have no complaints about Michael Lemons, I enjoyed being a student of his and I will miss it. Michael Lemons Sociology 100 class was awesome. I like the extra credit offered to us and the projects 1-5 and 7. I thank him for accepting me as a student.
I found the learning process simple and effective. Michael Lemmons was well informed, which allowed me to learn better. I found his power points quite useful in helping me to prepare for quizzes and projects. Overall, I felt that the class was a success.
Primarily, I liked the presentations and the instructor's enthusiasm.
I like the videos he chose. Like Food INC. That opened my eyes, Iron Jawed Angels was another great movie. I like that he's always prepared and has flow. He knows what he's talking about. He was always there if I needed to make up a test, which is super nice. He does his best to make sure that everyone understands. Great teacher, love his classes. Thats why I came back again this semester.
i liked the projects that somw were easy and some were hard.
great topics..
My favorite part of Sociology was Dr. Lemons' lecture on globalization. It's imperative that people understand how globalization works in post-modern civilization.
really enjoyed the assignment when we brought pictures from home because as a group we judge others and when you really see how they live it helps you to have a better understanding as a whole
I liked all the different videos that we watched. It helped open up my eyes about a lot of things such as the big corporations and their major roles in our society.
Some of the things that I liked about this course was the projects because I learned a lot about different people is society and how societyâ??s works as a whole.
i liked that this group was allowed to have group discussions even though we always went off track
The course provided me and students with incite towards our society as a government and as individuals on how react with one another. it was a tough course but also helpful
I did learn a few things, but I wish that Professor Noele taught it instead.
Mike made our activities and projects a lifetime lesson. The projects will stay in my memory a lifetime.
THE TALKS IN CLASS
It opened my eyes to the different perspectives of the world. There were things I had never known about or neglected to notice. It opened my eyes to another's perspective.
i really enjoyed our class discussions
I learned a lot I didn't know that affects my life. I liked attending a demonstration, I liked writing a letter to the editor, especially when it was published! These are things I've thought about doing and never made time for. I know I will like the global game thing. I also liked how we always know where we stood with our grade. Mike Lemons teaches with a lot of passion, he really knows how to make the class interesting.
Some projects were enjoyable. Like filming our private life and getting a look at how others live.
I really enjoyed learning about pretty much everything that's is going in our world, whether it be the past, present or future. This class has really opened my eyes to how the world actually works, and we portray it, especially with our media now a days. I have thought twice about buying products that has affect on people in 3rd World Countries. I also liked watching the videos, it gave another insight of what some people may say as the the truth.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
nope..1 class i actually found myself smiling a lot in
NO!
Mike did a great job, his passion, and enthusiasm made it very fun.
No, I think the course was great. Maybe a little less assignments. However I think I was just overwhelmed with the amount of assignments put together with other classes. If I had just this Sociology 100 class,it would not be as overwhelming.
I feel the course would have been improved by higher expectations from the instructor. The projects were incredibly easy and required little effort, and I did not feel that their completion helped me learn about sociology. In addition the quizzes were minimal and not remotely challenging, so I think that increasing the degree of difficulty a notch would be beneficial to course-thoroughness. Finally, while I know that Mr. Lemons was essentially substituting for the regular teacher and was attempting to teach the class as she taught it, his presentation of the material from that perspective was and could only be partially insincere on his own part, since he and the original instructor had different views on the subject matter; and for him to admit that he sometimes disagreed with what he was teaching was to, in my mind at least, detract from his teaching abilities. I feel that allowing Mr. Lemons to rework the course such that he could teach it directly from his own perspective would be greatly beneficial to both himself and the class. The only other suggestion I have is that the material be presented in a more balanced way. I completely understand that it is a social-conflict-based class, and I respect the liberal perspective and the fact that Mr. Lemons did introduce and describe the other main views, but I found it frustrating to only agree with 60% of what he said, and I would have liked to have seen more of the flaws of the viewpoint that was taught. To sum up, I believe this course would be improved by harder and more comprehensive testing materials, and by the instructor being permitted to teach the class directly from his point of view, yet with a more equal consideration of the different views associated with the taught material.
Attendance this semester was really harsh. I was really sick but had to come to class because of the points. I shouldn't have come because I was contagious.
lots more group work..
Great material and interesting lectures!
no
Maybe do some group projects or presentations.
i think if Mike explained why we needed to so some of the weird assignments or explained the relevance of the assignments then maybe it would have been gainful, but to me it felt like he wanted us to do silly assignments just so we could demonstrate to him that we could follow directions which seemed like had nothing to do with sociology.
my suggestion would to be just a little more prepared for a class.
Stay on track with lectures and answer the study guide questions more clearly and don't go all over the place with the lecture that it starts to confuse the students.

He tends to talk at you and the course is very left wing oriented. I would like to have some less biased views or views from the other side being put into play. but this is a left wing area of study...

Finally, a very enjoyable and knowledgable professor at HCC!!
Everything assigned was well thought out on the teachers part. Every question I had, I could refer back to the syabllus or simply look over the powerpoint presentations, most of the time I could find what I was looking for without asking Mike.
Great teacher!
Michael Lemons was a great teacher. I would reccomend him. As a matter of fact, I have told my other classmates and friends about his class and shared what I learned. If he teaches other classes that I am recommended to take I would definately try to be his student for that course to.
I dropped this class but Mike was the best.
Great job so far, thank you Mr. Lemons! Maybe I'll see you next semster? - Zoe

I personally don't enjoy being "interactive" in class (Doing community service, demonstrating protests, etc) so this was not a class I really enjoyed doing fully. I enjoyed the knowledge and movies that enhanced my knowledge but not the other stuff.
I loved this class and looked forward to going to it, Mike knows how to teach really well, I'm going to take classes that I see he is teaching next semester. He is a funny guy, a comedian teacher.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
overall his class was perfect but it was me, im kinda over school for now i think i need to take a break because its starting to overwhelm me.
the powerpoint slides were really helpful it gave me a whole new insight about our governments, corporations, an our economy status in our present time.
Mike is an amazing teacher! This is my second semester with him and I am disappointed he was not offering a class I have not already taken next semester. The material taught was interesting to me and very relevant to life today. Mike gives the push and sarcasm to really learn so you don't end up as the toilet scrubber!
i like the fild trips its fun
I liked alot of things about this course, though there was somethings i didnt like. Eveything went well and this course was awesome. The onlything was the lectures, it was long and boring but useful.
i liked the orginization. made it easy to follow.
I liked how the work was fun to do and it wasn't too hard
Enjoyed the projects that we had on each section.. Helped to cement information. Also appreciated the opportunity for field trips.
Some of the projects were pretty challenging as well as the quizzes. He made the classroom a fun and comfortable learning enviroment.
I thought it was interesting learning about the wide range of topics that were interconnected with the class subject and name. It was cool to see how technology has many forms and the use of them is significant in the advancement of societies.
I liked watching some of the videos. My favorite was the "Story of Stuff." I liked it so much, I told all my friends and family about it and actully made some of them watch it.
Well conveyed course material in an easy to learn manner. Overall great class, thank you very much. Oh, and the trip was great.
that youd be amazed on how much you learn about technology and everything in between
I liked the movie write-ups.
Very, very informative class. One of my favorites. I learned so many interesting and relevant things about present day society.
i was really pleased about the activities and project.
This course taught me about life in general and how we take things for granted. Outstanding Instructor!!!!
I liked the lectures and the note taking, it helped out a lot with projects and tests. Mr. Lemons was also very enthusiastic during class, very up-beat and the energy he gave off was very helpful, especially since this class was via-Conference call.
I learned alot of new ideas in this class. The power points was very creative.
I ENJOYED THE SLIDE SHOWS, THE FIELD TRIPS, THE PROJECTS AND THE ASSIGNMENTS EVERYTHING IS RLEVEANT TO TODAYS SOCIETY AND IT WAS AN EYE OPENER TO KNOW HOW OUR MATERIAL GOOD SYSTEM OPPERATES AND THE REALIZATION OF OUR ECONOMY. HELPED ME TO ENHANCE MY KNOWLEDGE AND REDIRECT MY ATTENTION TO GLOBAL EFFECTS.
I really enjoyed it, even though it was a video classroom. learned a lot about environmentally sustaining the world.
I learned a lot from this course and have actually altered some of my consumption habits because of it. Really interesting to get to the root of production and how many resources it really entails in the development. I've recommended this class to a ton of people so I hope you folks keep it on the roster.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
mike did a really good job and helped me and gave me advice when i needed, but another thing that helped me get through this course was the study groups that i had with the other students. we met before and after class and definately before every test. some would stay for 3 min, some stayed for 5 min and stayed as long as i could to get the extra help.
try not to talk about one project or slide for like 40 mins of the class and end losing time to finish the session.
it just hard to stay on trak some times because your jumping all over the projects just stak up it would be nice if u put something on the bord that reminds us when the projects are or that there coming up other then that i like the class and it was fun to have u as a teacher.:)
More activites.
no
I don't have much except to realign the speed and subject content depending on the needs of the class.
I believe the instructor should take into consideration of his audience; meaning the students he is teaching. (our backgrounds, the place we live in, our lifestyles, and most importantly the way we think).
Sometimes I found myself with a lack of interest for going to class, although it may because of distance, I think this would be solved if there were more active in class activities to do. However that may be achieved I do not know.
no suggestions. maybe more "get into the work" than just listen to the lecturer.
Stick to schedule.
I feel the class had a really smooth flow and was well planned out. No improvements needed
i think the teacher should drop the chapter 6.i don't think that talking about the different sexual types was necessary to know about.
Although it's hard to do, having him in class would've been a lot more helpful. He was only able to drive out twice throughout the semester and it would've been nice to actually be able to walk-up and ask him a question, rather then waiting for an e-mail reply.
Stay on Track! We kept falling behind because certan groups were not ready. To bad! We had to rush on some interesting content because we were falling behind. The tests and projects should be worth more than just 4 points and 2 points for the projects! We worked hard on these assignments and for it to require so much information and hard work it should be worth way more points! And you shouldnt take away points for such SMALL mistakes that you wanted to add. If the question is what do we think... then its what we think not you.
JUST WISH WE THE KONA CLASS COULD OF HAD HIM MORE TIMES IN OUR LOCATION. ITS A GREAT CLASS! AND I AM GLAD I MET MR.LEMONS I HOPE HE STAYS IN THE HAWAII SYSTEM AS A PERMANENT TEACHER. HE IS THE BEST!
Just the quiz and report hand back procedure to the Kona class was always a little behind Hilos. I think both classes should get their assignments back at the same time.

MAHALO MIKE!
other then that i like the class and it was fun to have u as a teacher.:)
Thanks for a great semester.
it was great, i shouldve did more work,
no
I will reccomend this class to anyone I talk to that is interested.
As much as I really wanted to grasp from this class, I felt that the instructor was speaking to class in a mainland mindse, which strongly hindered students from learning the subject. There were certain things that were said from the instructor that were quite offensive to some. Even when a student would address there sensitivity of certain subjects brought up in class, most time the instructor would either disregard the matter or have an intense conversation with that student during class time.
Great class, Great teacher. One of my favorites.
none
i really enjoy some chapters during this semestre such as chapter 3, 4, and 5

You put a lot of hard work into the work and assignments.
I AM THANKFUL FOR HIS KNOWLEDGE AND I WILL BE LOOKING INTO FUTURE COURSES WITH HIS STYLE OF TEACHING. HE IS A VERY GOOD INSTRUCTOR!

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I did like his enthusiasm and patience in the class.
Loved the actual material covered and Mike is a funny teacher. He really works to make sure it is possible for everyone to get a good grade in his class.
The films we watched in class and compared it to the books we are reading for the class.
Videos on subject matters along with group reaction questions.
I liked the powerpoint presentations because I can learn better with visuals. Seeing Pictures of tribes and graphs helped me interpret the information learned in class and I could connect to it. I enjoyed the videos to because it helped me understand cultural differentiation.
I liked some of the books we had.
Some things were interesting. Most things not.
Dont get me wrong, but he is a very good teacher, jus i stuggled a little in his class jus the infomation that was given was a little to overwhelming to me.
well i like the fact that he was able to give us a study guide. THe study guide helped me to fill out the test and what was going to be on the test.
Great teacher. Mr. Lemons knows his information and presented it well. Lecture time was interesting. Using the chalk board was useful in understanding ideas and concepts as well. I thought that providing the study guide was a good idea. Because they have the exact questions that will be on the test, the students known exactly what the teacher expects them to know. There should be no reason to complain.
The majority of the course grade depends on exam scores. I would rather take tests than do projects, so I liked that part.
I especially enjoyed the reading material for this class, I almost couldn't put the books down! I fell like I am walking away from this class with alot of knowledge that will be useful no matter what path I ultimately take. I felt that the exams were challenging but Mr. Lemons fully prepared us for them. His book response questions were though provoking and helped me take a closer look at the reading material.
I really liked the course readings (eg. Nisa and The Spirit Catches). They were very educational and fun for me to read. I also liked the way Mike was so willing to help his students. Anytime we had a question or problem, Mike would always be sure to help as best he could.
Everything style of teaching, information from the class.
I like when we watch a movie regarding on the books that we are reading.
The books were interesting.
i loved the books and doing the book responses. the reading of the books were where i found alot of the connections of "anthropology"
I liked the book responses. The powerpoints helped a lot on the exam.
Mr. Lemons taught throughout the course with such great encouragement and made me enjoy this class, even though it was a 8 o'clock class.
this course was good for the fact that i learned alot about many different culteres.
Michael Lemons does an excellent job teaching this class. He took the important points in the books and supplemented them with his life experience and knowledge adding a third dimension to the class. I also felt it was challenging to make a good grade(this is a positive in my book!)I was my favorite class yet. Many of the things I learned in this class are supplementing what I am learning in other classes.
I like the fact that we always did things as a group and it was very interactive. He is very into what he teaches and know what he is talking about. We always have a study session before a test to make sure everyone understands the material. he offers numerous ways to earn extra credit points also.
He keep your interest in the way he teached the class. This is my second time taking anth 200 and the first time with a different professor i had a hard time and also received a low grade. this time with a new professor i have a better time and enjoy the subject much more and im receiving a much better grade. Just the way he taught the class was a good job.
Very interesting topics.
watching clips and videos, basically being able to view cultural differences.
Enjoyed the videos, they were very informative and helpful for class.
I enjoyed having our class discussions and having everyone be involved and being able to express ourselves.
I really enjoyed the slides, lectures and the reading materials assigned. Topics of discussion was very interesting and I enjoyed participating.
Everything about the course was interesting, Michael is a great teacher!
I really liked the book Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. Michael Lemons is a very enthusiastic teacher. He makes everyone laugh and is highly amusing, making class fun as well as educational. I'm appreciative that he is not biased and is open to class input. He makes learning anthropology fun and educational rather than a boring topic or an excuse to brainwash students.
He was a very motivated, exciting teacher. His powerpoints were very interesting.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
1) To be better prepared with an outline of what is to be covered in that one hour of class for himself. It would be beneficial to him as well as the students to appropriately cover the material needed to pass the test clearly and concise. I also think that for the exams it should be multiple choice so that grading is easy and fast, so that the students can know about their grade promptly. Furthermore, anything that should be loaded in to Laulima, for example, attendance, points for exams, and other grade related items should be promptly put in to the system with a letter grade and percentage showing to allow the student to know where they stand.
A little more organization at times ;]
A little more specific on subjects and questions without getting too far off subject.
We had readings to do in class and didn't get to go over what we read so more time could be needed to discuss the readings.
I think Micheal did a good job teaching.
He talks to much and gets off subject, A LOT! His powerpoint were not helpful when doing practice exams. His lectures is much to long and he is not prepared for anything. We were totally off track with our schedules because his lectures were too long and he could not keep up with what we had to do. Make things more interesting to us, the students. This is not the mainland, we can't comprehend on what you are trying to say. Okay im done.
HE needs to make the study guides shorter and he needs to be more on topic. I feel like sometimes he talks to much about other things besides the lecture. I also think that his power points need to have more information on it not just pictures. He needs to put whatever information on the test on the power point so we can go back on there and use it to study.
I thought that there could have been more assignments, since points rely heavily on attendance and tests.
No. Lemons explains his material well enough so that everyone should be able to understand it.
Becasue there is so much information given with the lectures, it would be helpful to know what was the most useful information needed to be successful with the exams. I had a hard time keeping up while taking notes! Also, there were very disruptive students who I felt did not show respect to Mr. Lemons, and it should have been addressed, it was very distracting for those of us who wanted to pay attention.
Maybe, to go through the slides in class a little faster. That's all!
NO SIR!!!
If he could make his question shorter that easy to understand.
Little bit more organized with time and scheduleing too much in so little time.
i have suggestions to lemons: he knows what he is talking about but is just pouring all that information out to the class and most of us here have had maybe or never heard some of the words/definitions/phrases/and sometimes even cultures and countries he is talking about and he just talks 99 miles an hour and jumps back n fourth. great instructor as far as knowing what he is talking about but way too much disaorganization for me personally.
More time on going over study guides.
-none-
perhaps give the students the answers for the test like a printed copy to memorize or let them just use their notes and not give any printed answers also some different types of question like multiple choice true and false vocabulary and filling in the blanks are both good and effective ways to memorize what we learn for a very long time not just for a test and then a few days later deleted out of our brains lol.
My only suggestions would be in regard to the vid-com aspect of this class. There were times that I I felt technical difficulties wasted class time.
None
maybe include more things that is related to nursing also, because majority of the students are nursing majors.
Shorter tests. Tests are too hard and way too long.
My only suggestion would be to fellow class mate in regards to participation,it is much better getting a dialog going with more than 1 person, I wanted to hear some of their point of views to bring some unique or individual thoughts to the table.
A more organized system for lectures. It was really scattered and it made it hard for me to understand what was going on.
Drop the gross sexuality stuff in the slideshow--it's bad enough going over it in the textbook. change some of the slideshow pictures to make them more appealing and drop nudity. I strongly disliked the Nisa book. I also think Michael Lemons needs to be a little more prepared and organized, so as to avoid falling one week behind in schedule. Perhaps less time on movie questions/discussions? Sometimes he also will not know specific facts about what he's saying when he should, i.e., he couldn't name the exact location of islands, etc. sometimes when he could have easily looked it up before class. So sometimes there will be small inaccuracies as well. Also, try to be more concise at times. Sometimes you are unclear as well.
He did a great job with what he could do.
15. Other comments:
Although Micheal,Lemons to me was a horrible teacher all year, i believe he is very passionate about what he does and wants to teach he just needs to take a speech class, which i think will help him allot in his further endeavors.
none
HE is okay but he just need to shorten the questions on his exam. he ask way to much in one question.
I really enjoyed this class and the instructor.
I learned a great deal about cultural anthropology during this course. I would recommend this class to a friend.
Great Instructor/Lecturer. Loves his enthusiasim. Third class of the day, and still intrested, and awake during class. Grasps the attention of students.
goo semester.
tooooo much info for the amount of time we actually have to learn in. i still have three other classes and life that includes being a single mother of 3 kids under 5. i had a hard time with this class this semester.
Thanks for the great semester!!
I feel that Mike is a very cool guy and i like that he is very knowledgeable about different cultures but some times i feel that when he is asked a question from other students that he may not explain it very well and the look on the other students faces support my belief. Over time i know the mike will be a grate teacher and students will be fighting for a seat in his class
None
Teacher is very enthusiastic.
Overall great class. Try to spread out information more so that there is not two long tests and two short tests. I would rather have all tests at about the same length.
The Split Horn was the best film out of the ones I saw. Perhaps you can go more in-depth about creationist beliefs. Thanks for a good semester! Careful about rambling at times as well.
He was a very good teacher, for only seeing him twice the whole semester. Very nice, and helpful.

Mikes a cool & funny teacher. I like the way he teaches, but needs to explain more into detail and teach at a slower pace for the students who don't understand what's going on. Other than that I enjoyed his class. Mahalo's!!
The movies that we were to watch were very factual but most were interesting like Food Inc, Why we Fight and Passion and Power. This course was very interesting and challenging at the same time.
I liked the movies we watched towards the end of the course. I liked that we had class debates and discussions. I also liked how he was open to opinion and how he looked me in the eyes when i'd ask question.
i like that we had to watch movies and answer questions about them

I really enjoyed all of the material we covered. There was a wide variety of material and all of it was very interesting. I think that most of the material was great in the sense that it was very thought provoking and most of it were things people don't like to talk about. I like that he pushed the envelope and took people out of their comfort zones. I enjoyed all of the movies and assignments.
Stay more on topic cause we were drifting away a decent amount of time. Loved the movies, pretty powerful ones.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
More interesting movies and less intense readings in the beginning of the course

I think that it was very difficult to participate in this class because it was a video class room. I had a lot I wanted to say but felt I could not because of the connection. It just felt weird to me to speak to the television and sometimes the audio was not working correctly. I think that too much time was spent on explaining things. I think there were students in the class that were not ready to take this course and Mr. Lemons had to slow down for them. I wish that we could of spent more time actually learning then him having to explain himself over and over.
Have dates assignments and websites ligned up to have good directions for use.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I liked the readings. They were very interesting. I really liked that the powerpoints were accessible online.
i really enjoyed this class. His lectures were really interesting.
Very informative and energetic course His class curriculum deserves to the 200 level.
Michael Lemons demonstrates his desire and interest in Anthropology. If he could, he could teach a lecture class on his personal experiences.Unfortunately, syllabus does not allow time for that.
I like how helpful he was, he made himself useful.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
I hope the technical support member assist Prof.Lemons and find an effective use of two monitors for the class on both sides: Hilo and Kona.
Demonstrate to new instructors how to run epuipment.
Better video conferencing, and maybe slow down on the powerpoints.
15. Other comments:
Hope to take a class taught by him in the future.
Please keep the quality of the course program for the next semester, although some students can not follow the class. This is college education.
overall this was an excellent course.
