8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
I liked the PowerPoint lectures and their accessibility to them on Laulima. He incorporated other information in the lectures in class and reinforced them with something visual, which I enjoyed and found very useful. I also enjoyed the Problem Sets. They were helpful (and optional!) to enhance our knowledge and prepare for tests.
The power points were available online which was very beneficial to studying for the exams
i found his review day and powerpoints to be very useful when it came to exam time
The fact that he focused a lot on history and current events and how the two affect each other.
Learning about surrounding countries.
I liked the problem sets and our hands out figuring out the concepts. I feel like there needs to be more of that to prepare instead of just straight lecturing.
The research project taught me a lot about the two different countries and they are actually real life examples as to what we learned in class.
Professor McClain knows a lot about the subject.
Videos / Papers
Learning about world economics.
The information was relevant to real world situations.
The PowerPoints. They were always very thorough and neat.
The way the test were structured helped take some stress off! I also like that all the material is on the powerpoints!

16. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Maybe more interactive things to get students more interested in the course material? The videos were an interesting way to learn versus constant lecturing.
The exams were very difficult and more feedback on the papers would be more helpful.
he should allow a rough draft for his paper because the first part was a rude awakening.
He has a very monotone voice that can be boring at some points, especially during boring content lectures. I also really disliked his grading style for multiple choice. For example say there are four possible choices: A, B, C, D. A and B are both correct. However, if I choose C, I will get a point off for choosing C, and two points off for not choosing A or B. I feel like that is a little unfair.
I would incorporate a more hands on approach to teaching where the students are able to work out problems/concepts.
Perhaps, giving a study guide out as to what will be on the exams. There is a lot of material to cover and study for.
Multiple answers on multiple choice is a bad exam layout.
Hard to pay attention in class- keep class involved
Engage students more, also require attendance to get more students to show up.
The lectures were a little bit to dry. Most students were looking at their computers and only a few faced him as he spoke. Maybe make the lectures more engaging by getting the students involved.
Perhaps encouraging students to participate in class--this may help students to stay more focused and engaged in the materials. It's also a good way to see whether students are understanding the concepts being explained.

I gave the exam question a neutral response because the tests were okay, but sometimes the entire class would be trying to complete their test at the end of class time (which means that it was probably a bit lengthy).

One of my favorite teachers. I want to take more classes from him.
Professor McClain is a good instructor and is very enthusiastic teaching the class.
Difficult course, takes focus to do well.
Good Professor
Thank you for a great semester; I really did learn a lot from this course and I enjoyed taking it from you.
Good Teacher!

8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Learning about leadership is essential in the business world
I really value the way Dr. McClain made assignments - I feel like his approach maximized my learning and retention. I always appreciate professors who as me to think rather than regurgitate their lectures.
leadership examples (ex. guest speakers), videos, explanations made by Dr. Mcclain helped me understand and learn a lot
Group Presentations
I found it most valuable to do all of the different writings and presentations.
I think learning about the different leadership styles and hearing real life experiences from successful business people was really helpful. The guest speakers are something you cannot find in any class, and sometimes they could charge money for their speeches (which we heard for free, or the cost of tuition).
The course book and videos that we utilize during class were really helpful in understanding how leaders use their skills and competencies towards their subordinates.

He was rude to some students so keep the temper down
Students could learn more about making presentations - they need to be taught to engage and interact with their audience. Some presenters were reading to us.... I can read. It will benefit them to learn better presentation skills and since we do so much presenting in this class, might as well teach it :)
I think he's great as is
There was an incident where Dr Mcclain yelled at a group after their presentation because he didn't like how they presented it. It was extremely awkward for the presenters and the rest of the class. I don't think he handled the situation well at all. It was extremely unprofessional and seemed unlike him to do. Even the next class was awkward. Not sure how that can be improved other than not allowing it to happen. Any situation that makes students that uncomfortable in an academic setting just seems unacceptable. However, that was the only incident and other than that, Dr Mcclain's teaching styles were completely fine.
Saying what exactly is expected for projects, presentations, papers, etc. Sometimes I would do really well on certain assignments, then come the next week and I would not do as well. It would be much more beneficial to understand what is expected of us in the coursework we complete so that we are not in the dark and assume what is expected. A criteria would be nice for assignments.
Although it's in the syllabus, it would be nice if we were to discuss about what was required in our writing before actually doing the paper. This will assure the students what is needed for the assignment.

Really enjoyed the class, would definitely recommend :)
I think time should be spent on learning the different leadership styles. I'm not sure how they will apply to the final exam, but I feel that more review is needed.
Course assignments were graded very hard - but sometimes it seemed inconsistent. A lot of people in class seemed dissatisfied with their assignment grades on a day to day basis.
It is a lot of coursework, although it is understandable for a 300+ level writing intensive course. Just more clarification on all coursework would be very helpful.

8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
The reflective writing exercises. We seldom would take the time to think about ourselves and out future the way we were required to in the course.
This was a course that would seem like a soft course.....but watch out for the hard truths that David helps to facilitate each student through in their reflection and growth as a leader! guest speakers (Kitty) was a life changer and really had a huge impact on the way I think about my leadership and taking chances.
Learning leadership skills to use in the work environment.
Assignments required self reflection and detailed individual planning.
The True North Book was very useful and I've referenced it a couple times in conversations and in my book club. By far thought the self-reflection papers were incredibly difficult and will likely be my greatest asset.
David Mcclain led the class very well through the self reflection and analysis necessary to really understand our leadership vision and drive.
David encourages each student to be introspective and reflect upon their leadership capabilities and styles. This process is critical in helping us to discover our leadership potential and to create a roadmap to finding our true north towards authentic leadership.
Understanding myself and my goals for the future. Put things in perspective for me.
The management case studies were very good.
Group discussions, required readings and journals assisted in the learning process and I really gained a lot of insight about myself as an individual and as a leader.
The personal health portion of the leadership plan.
At the end of our graduate time, this class really set me up for the next 5-10 years of my career, helping me to set my path. The book was great!!!!

I know the volume of grading must be tremendous. More feedback on the assignments would be helpful. The (current) invitation to have a discussion offline works too.
Wow there aren't many suggestions. The book was great...I would say that I used the kindle version (that I personally bought) more than my hard copy book but was glad I had both. I will use the appendix worksheets with my staff at work....so my suggestion would be to have both.
Provide students with matrix for participation points.
I can't think of a single thing to improve. Very well organzied, very well spoken...a true 'authentic' leader.
David is an excellent instructor. He is extremely well organized and prepared for each class.
Cut down the time requirement for the corner office presentations. They ran very long and became redundant toward the end.

21. What did you like most about your online course experience?
The ability to attend class from anywhere on the globe is extremely important. Many students have logged in from across the US and in Asia. Without that option they (we) would have missed class.
Flexibility to attend in a busy life.
My Cohort! Also though I love the chat box, it gives me an outlet for my internal thoughts, in a classroom setting when a thoght occurs to me I usually ponder the thought and then wait to see if it is covered in the lecture...usually I forget I even had a question.
The flexibility and convenience afforded by the online channel
Able to attend class anywhere so long internet is available.
Doing the self evaluative essays and projects
True North book was very insightful and added to the learning experience of this class.
Interactions with professor and other students. The professors knowledge and organization are beyond compare.
22. What did you like least about your online course experience?
Bandwidth/connection/network problems. The blackboard connect is powerful, but it is extremely network dependent. When the network was compromised (for any reason; local network, UH network, bad weather in Canada, etc) classroom quality suffered. Sometimes, greatly so.
the length...I would have enjoyed the class to be a few weeks longer.
Difficulty for all students to obtain a reasonable amount of participation points.
The tech is a little touchy sometimes and it's especially aggrevating when you keep getting kicked out of the room for loss of connection.
The inability of interacting face to face with cohort and instructor
Do miss the face to face conversation and participation sometimes.
Not being able to discuss with my class in a group setting. I think more outside of class discussion on the topics and cases would have made the course more beneficial.

This course (Leadership) was a powerful experience. The exploration of what authentic leadership is and how to achieve it would be valuable to any MBA student.
The amount of work was the right amount. The introspective yet facilitative sharing of groups was really important to help in the self reflection. The online format allowed some anonymity for sharing. David's manner and style helped ground us and ease our sharing and helped us to find our authentic leadership purpose and style. I imagine the executive class group is more interesting since they have a lot more experience to draw from....however it could be helpful for regular MBA and undergrads as well to get their path started off well.
One of the most valuable courses in the DLEMBA program. Course material and assignments were focused and well thought out. Professor was well prepared, and exemplified a fine leader. Mahalo for sharing your manaʻo.
I've recommended this every semester and I will continue to do so. I would very much loved to have a great reason to fly to the neighboor island. I hope in the next offering of the DLEMBA, Shidler will consider sending the professor for that particular Saturday when we all meet, to one of the neighboor islands, maybe the island that has the most students. In our case I would have very much loved the opportunity to fly to Maui or Hawaii island and I'm sure the students on those island would equally have loved the opportunity to stay home that weekend. I'm probably unique because I'm in the military and I haven't had the opportunity to go to the other islands yet.
An excellent course and an excellent instructor - I would highly recommend both

At times I felt as though, because I do not personally feel that I need a crucible to continue to do the good I do, my leadership had been marginalized.
I cannot express how grateful I am for this course or Prof. McClain. He is by far the example of how a professor should be, organized, approachable, instructive and thought provoking. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Exchange rates and other econ formulas
The power points and being able to review our test and the answers after the midterms. It helped me to learn what I did wrong and how to fix it.
Learning international macroeconomics
Studying current economic situations and having real examples to learn off of.
Exclusive use of PowerPoint slides for study purposes
Professor McClain obviously had a lot of knowledge and experience in economics so that definitely came through in the class.
The professor puts a lot of efforts.
I learn more about world economy.
The paper was interesting and helped me in my other classes.
I like Dr. Mcclain's teaching style especially he always share his personal experience!!!
The lack of usage of the traditional textbooks and the dynamics of current events in class lectures.
Learning about the economy on a global scale and how everything greatly affects each country.

Class was good as is.
Great class but can be a little boring sometimes when lectures are too long
Make it a little more discussion based and interactive like HRM 353. I think students would be more engaged this way.
It took some adjustment at first having of having no required textbook, but it did save me some money. The Papers could be a little more structured as to what he's looking for. (Rankings, statistics, certain references).
Providing a study guide for exams would help a lot.
Maybe some group exercises
Consider more engagement with students during the lectures. Since lectures were a very passive experience for students, many didn't listen in class. (They didn't have to either since everything was on the PowerPoint slides.) Simple things like classroom exercises or calling on specific students to verbally answer a question in front of class would work.
Important slides should be mentioned since there are so many information to absorb, and many areas that I studied for were not in the exams, but only a few areas were in the exams. Professor gives us the broad topic about the exams, but I think it is better for me to study when it is a little bit more specific. I cannot remember them all.
NO.
Please don't show those Diamond videos again. We learned that(at least I hope) in 5ht grade. I see the loose connection but they suck. The other more current videos of about the debt crisis are excellent please keep showing them.
The use of videos in tying the class topics together with verbal lectures.
Maybe more class participation. One thing I disliked about the exams was the fact that you could pick more than one answer. It left me feeling confused sometimes.

8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
The practical experience based examples from Prof McClain and guest speakers
I most appreciated how relevant the material and exercises were to real life. I also enjoyed the guest speakers.
Dr. McClain's approach to our learning was practical and relevant. The data was not just for our consumption as academics, it was made applicable to the board room.
Very clear and organized lecture materials ie powerpoints and notes.
Porters 5 Forces due to its relevance to my career position.
After taking the tests, not much. Sorry.
There wasn't enough time to learn much of anything.
Reading all of the course material would have probably been helpful, as well as clear expectations on assignments and exam reviews.
The Porter's Five forces was the most valuable information.
I really enjoyed the guest speakers and the instructor's depth of experience and knowledge of different industries.
In class lectures, exercises and guest speakers.
I found that the pace and required reading for the course was not overwhelming and the time taken to go over different concepts was adequate. Professor McClain challenged us to apply concepts learned in class to real- life scenarios. Being able to work on the final exam at our own pace was extremely helpful and having the midterm be take home may also be helpful for students to really think about the topics covered in class without a time constraint.
The understanding of economics and impact on the business community. In addition to building strategy in a complex economic environment.
Application of real world examples, and integration of text examples along with lectures. Use of multi media presented an embracement of modern tools by instructor.
Assignments and real world application of the subject matter, including guest speakers inspired me to want to further discuss the subject material.
Porter's model. Definetly am able to define and apply it from retained knowledge.
The group projects and presentations/discussions. I learned a lot about different businesses and industries. I also enjoyed the guest speakers. Basically, all of the real-world applications.

Material could be better presented in a 3 credit course
The course work felt like it was worth 3 credits as I feel that I obtained a wealth of knowledge beyond 1.5 credits.
lectures didn't seem to reflect the final exam.
The lectures and course material did not prepare me for what was tested on the exam. Basically the exam did not seem to reinforce what was discussed overall and focused on the first couple of sessions. If there are going to be problem questions on the exam, there needs to be more practice problems available to reinforce what the test expectations are.
Either the material needs to be decreased or the amount of class time needs to be increased with extra emphasis on the calculations.
I don't think we had a clear expectation of how tough the grading structure would be for this 1.5 credit course. The industry reports were good, I liked listening to everyone's reports and class discussions that ensued from them, however we spent so much time with them, I don't think that we gained the insight into the materials/hotpoints that we would need for exams. We pretty much flew through some power points, so we didn't cover in detail what we probably would have for test prep.
Allot time for a review session prior to exams. Set clear expectations on what will be on exams.
I did not like being asked what guest speakers had to say because none of us took noted in order to be attentive to the speaker. When we were asked on tests about these bits of information it was hard to recall. We could have spent more time walking through the homework assignments and we could have been given more to practice as well.
I don't recall covering the last question on the final exam.
I did not feel well prepared for the take home exam and the class materials were of limited assistance in completing it.
At times it was hard to follow lectures topics and required chapter readings. Grading criteria seems to be subjective and requires improvement.
Regarding time constraints on presentations. When time limit was set and included in grade, occasionally instructor would ask questions during presentation, that would then decrease presentation time within limit.
Dr. McClain has very high expectations of his students. Please consider closing the gap on high expectations and hard grading on exams.
I enjoyed the class discussions and tangents we would take. Unfortunately it was at the expense of learning the course material which we were tested on. Since Prof McClain creates his own test, it would behoove him to provide better practice problems throughout the class so the students and prepare for his testing style. The after section questions where not of the same caliber as those on the test.
Several people complained that the class was too hard. I didn't think so actually (surprisingly). There was no skirting through this class; you just had to do the work.

8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Leadership concepts/theories that can be applied in the work place
Teacher was by far the most valuable resource in the class. He had very engaging and participative classroom environment. The assignments were well planned and the amazing guest speakers provided very helpful advice on our future careers.
the case discussions. Hearing what other people had to say was very good for me.
I enjoyed the structure of the class and the straightforwardness. It wasn't too surprising, and I could rely on the consistency of the lesson plan.
The most valuable and aspect of this course was the fact that we really discussed each topic. Rather than just going through the different leadership styles, we really took time to explain each type in detail. Actually discussing the cases really allowed me to think about how I would react in different situations.
The amount of real world examples McClain used, both from his own experience and from the guest speakers.
I really value the insight and perspective Dr. McClain brings to the course and class room. He has great experiences that strongly relate to the study of leadership. I feel he is an excellent example of a leader and will use the strategies and knowledge I gained from Dr. McClain and this course throughout my career and life.
How to be an effective leader in different situations, while still being true to yourself and your beliefs.
I enjoyed the case studies, the textbook was a good read, and I liked the guest speakers.

Maybe more group activities
I still think leadership theory should take recent scientific findings about the brain into greater consideration. Important leadership characteristics such as resilience, self-awareness, an emotional intelligence are mentioned in the course; however, I find it interesting to examine the extent to which we can develop these once thought to be static abilities. The vast majority of all leadership theories is based on behavioral science, which provides very useful information about effective leadership. However, human behaviors are shaped by the cultures we grow up in and life experiences we have-- so all leadership findings based on behavioral studies will be slightly biased from the diversity of experiences the studied participants have in life. Studying the simple neurobiology (a much more constant science)behind the habits and motivation of both leaders and followers could lead to much more tangible and definitive theories on what makes effective leaders and how to become an effective leader. I know Harvard offers positive psychology courses relating to business (Shawn Achors book The Happiness Advantage) that delve into this field of study. Overall I thought the course was absolutely amazing! Just trying to offer another perspective on the subject that might be of some interest. Thank you so much!

I was intimidated after reading reviews on the class because many people said it was a large work load. But I am very pleased that I took this course. I definitely gained a lot through this course. It helped me think about my strengths and weaknesses regarding leadership.

8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
The information that he provided to students on laulima, and in class.
I found that when Prof. McClain relates the topics to real life scenarios it is easier to understand and relate to. Examples of the problem really help me understand the calculations when needed. Professor McClain knowledge base of the subject helps me understand a topic that in the past gave me difficulties.
I learned alot of economic concepts from this course and information that will probably be beneficial to my finance career.
The reports we had to do were great and really showed me different ways to analyze different economies.
Covered a lot of material.
In-class lectures and powerpoint slides
When we would go over current news in the beginning of class
He always related things to real life problems!
Loved the analysis of current events.
The information I have learned from this class is very applicable to the real world, I will be able to apply this to my future career.
The fact that he went over current local and international issues really helped tie the information in the class together
Gave lots of own experience during his lecture.
Professor McClain's knowledge of global economics was thorough and vast. He knew of all current events and related them back to the course daily.
-the powerpoints being online
I felt that the study we did of the two different countries and their political situation, financial situation, etc. gave me a better sense of the process of becoming a multinational corporation.
The paper helped me learn new websites to research and keep up with other countries.
The project was helpful in learning about the economics of other countries other than the Uniter States.
Knowing up-to-date news about the world.
Professor Mcclain is incredibly knowledgeable.
His lecture slides and example questions
All of the news we learned about different countries. I feel like I am more aware of what is going on in the world.
currency exchange rates/ arbitrage
I really enjoyed the practice problems. I think that Professor McClain is very helpful when students approach him for extra help.
He covers recent news in context of class contents. Required calculations of foreign exchange rates are very complicated, but he takes time and slowly go over the contents thoroughly. I love the way he structure the class project.
What I found most valuable in this course was learning the exchange rates and how to convert dollars into different currencies around the world.

16. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Professor mcclain did a perfect job.
I love the teaching style and the examples. The only thing that I would change is that I think having handout of the examples as we go through them on the power point would be more helpful then going over the step by step process at a later date. The example on the powerpoint are helpful, but the handout or the example that we work through step by step on the elmo is even more help in understanding what is being done.
Maybe next semester the professor could make a better review session before exams.
The tests in this class was extremely difficult and the style of test where there are multiple correct answers is beyond infuriating. The test questions are tricky and not enough practice and analyzation of these theories were done in class. The fact that there was no textbook and no practice materials made this course exceptionally difficult and frustrating.
None
none
More examples
The course is just a little boring. And the tests are extremely difficult
Maybe have more online sources for the economic aspect of the class for students to reference if they are a little confused in class. Kinda miss having a book to look at when I don't understand something. But I also felt that a book wasn't needed because you did a great job of explaining things. so I think other library or online resources would be a great substitute.
since there is no book for the class, maybe a study guide or list of topics/questions that will be on the exam would be helpful. Exam clues were also very helpful though.
Maybe have a more clear instruction about the assignments we had to complete.
Professor McClain's course is very well structured, and in my opinion needs no changes.
-more practice problems that we can access and step-by-step solutions would be prime.
Maybe incorporate more student participation in class.
Try and relate more to real life situations or simplify information. He understands the material very well, but some of the things are harder for students to understand. Sometimes it is hard for intelligent people to understand how we cant understand.
None, it was good
Explain more specifics in assignments of what is expected.
Maybe a book? Multiple choice with multiple correct sucks a lot, way too difficult - if you want to gauge student's understanding, do short answer. It's a real crapshoot if not.
make the lectures more interactive to make students follow along
Its set up perfect in my opinion
I think that some videos were hard to understand because they contained concepts that were not reviewed in class beforehand. But the videos were very helpful. I think that the content after the 2nd midterm were really hard to understand. However, I still don't think a textbook is necessary, but perhaps some handouts that provide more details on concepts can be used as a supplement for the PowerPoint presentations. For the last part, it wasn't too specific that data should be provided for the past 5 years for all of the materials that were asked...it seemed like it only covered the first 2 parts.
With all that we were learning in the course, I think having a quiz every two weeks would be helpful in keeping us accountable in what we learn and keeping up with the powerpoints.

Amazing Teacher.
Professor McClain has years of knowledge that he can teach us about Economics. The fact that a text isn't required is helpful. It save us money and I tend to learn through a hands on method and speaking with my professor. For those that wanted a text book Professor McClain gave them suggestions they could use. I think that this is a better route then forcing all of us to purchase the text when not all of us will use it.
Professor McClain was very knowledgeable, helpful, and enthusiastic to teach. You could really tell from class that he enjoyed teaching and it helps to keep students interested because of his enthusiasm to teach. Overall he is a great teacher.
Need way more practice of these theories, lectures and powerpoints are not nearly enough. I am taking next to nothing away from this course, and I was very excited for it and the professor. I felt as if we were getting an economic history lesson during most lessons and then the exam would focus only on theories that were rushed through in class and were never given outside of the classroom practice.
I really enjoy the fact that we do not need to purchase a textbook for this class. Dr. Mcclain does an excellent job of teaching, he is extremely knowledgeable about the course material and economics in general. He is very approachable and wants nothing more than to pass on his knowledge to us. I'm very thankful that we are allowed to work on our projects as a team. I would definitely recommend taking BUS313 to other students from Dr. Mcclain.

I thought it was awesome that we didn't need to purchase a textbook.
I really like Professor Mcclain because A. he is incredibly knowledgeable B. he makes the class pretty interesting C. no attendance D. he has saved Hawaii from going into debt on numerous occasions and E. exceptional facial hair.
the exam format is different, it can help you out a lot, however it can also hurt you.
I enjoyed Prof McClain's class. He is very knowledgeable, the lectures are interesting, but the subject can be tough and hard to understand without a strong background in economics or finance. Course is somewhat comparable to FIN 321 (international finance).
Great having you as a professor, Professor McClain!

8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
It was taught very different from any other class I have taken. The students taught the class but everybody still took part in each chapter.
The most valuable asset in this course was the Professor and his wealth of knowledge, connections, and experience in the business world.
The professional seminars at the end really helped tie in his material to real world leaders.
The case studies.
I found the chapter presentations the most helpful, although they were also the most work. It helped build a better understanding of many leadership characteristics throughout the semester.
Being able to learn about the different leadership styles and thinking about how we can apply this in our workplaces or even in school..
learning about different types of leadership styles and viewpoints. how to use that knowledge to understand how to effectively lead people.
I think that the interaction with my peers as well as the professional speakers were very valuable to me.
I liked that we got to present certain chapters to the class as a group because it helps us with team work and also learning to work with other people with different styles. I also liked that we got to choose the examples that go along with our chapters to further explain our topic because it made it a lot easier to use modern examples rather than just wants in the book which maybe a little out dated.
I liked that we had to participate in doing presentations and that each presentation that we did, we rotated groups, so we were working with different people every time. It really helped us, get out of our "relax" mode and sit by in class, and really participate and in return, we actually had a good productive time in class.

16. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Be sure to let the class know that the grades for group projects are more evaluated on an individual base than the entire group.
I would like to do a presentation on a person that I look up to in regards to leadership. Giving us the opportunity to present on someone we know and and look up too will help us be more confident in our verbal presentation skills.
Use more examples from past experiences then just chapters in the text.
More interactive activities with the class besides just presentations.
Although I felt that the presentations were the most helpful, they also put can wear you out. Having a presentation every few weeks and a case study when we weren't presenting was tough. I really feel like if there was a break, or something to give our minds a pause and reset, that it would have been better for everyone.
Since it is a smaller class, I would suggest making attendance a requirement...
I would establish a clear grading rubric so that students know how they are being graded.
Maybe we could stay with the same groups throughout the year or maybe switch less often.
We haven't sat for the final yet. But according to my understanding, it is going to be a cumulative. If the final were not cumulative, that would be great because we have covered ALOT of content and that can be so stressful.

This course has provided me with so much relevant and pertinent knowledge about leadership. The ability to meet and learn from guest speakers, such as CEO's and other business leaders was an absolutely invaluable experience. I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to take this course with Professor McClain and the material I have learned will surely be put to good use in my career. Thank you!
Good job. Please keep sharing your leadership experiences with other students.
Good class and good teacher.
I really enjoyed the many presenters that Professor McClain brought in to talk to us. They were full of so many life examples and stories of their own experiences and it's just so interesting.
I enjoyed being in Professor McClain's classes this semester. He really knows what he's teaching and I can see his enjoyment in the topics that he's teaching.
I really enjoyed listening to the professional who came to speak in our classes, it is always nice to see someone who is successful and once was in our shoes.

8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
The powerpoints were very informative.
I learned a whole lot more about Economics and Financial Environment of Global Business. I enjoyed taking this class.
We did not have to waste money on a textbook and still had the same outcome had we bought one.
The exam clues reviewed in the beginning of class was a good review of the previous lecture.
The course is interrelated to current world economic events, thus making it more interesting. It gives a rather realistic application in terms of understanding the situation that we are in.
lecture slides
I took advanced macro econ before at another university. My course credit was not transferred over because it was not focused on the southeast Asian and pacific islands area. It was good as a refresher and I can't say that I did not learn a couple new things, but then some things weren't taught that I was taught elsewhere (there is only so much time in the semester), so personally not the best value for my money or time.
Access to powerpoint lecture slides.
The professor communicated well with students.
i think that he needed to be less broad on the tests to be able to obtain any of this information
I think the lectures were very well organized and coming to class really exposed me to global international trade. The research project helped me understand how to read economies and will help me in my future trades. I can find strong and weak economies and decide where to place future businesses.
COURSE PROJECT. CURRENT EVENTS RELATED TO THE LECTURE.
Mcclain's willing to explain concepts to students, in and outside of class.
Looking at the bigger picture of business.
PowerPoints instead of textbooks
The PowerPoint slides he used to explain each lecture was very useful and beneficial for the exams.
I really liked that he would always remind us on up coming assignments and exams. I also liked that we got to bring in notes to the exams because it is a broad subject to full understand.
The fact that we didn't have a book was great, however, Professor McClain did not lecture well enough to make up for it. His tests are somewhat difficult not because of the course material, but because he structures them in ways to trick deceive students. Nearly the entire class struggled on our last midterm and I suspect it is because of his intent to trick us.
Everything. Not only did Professor McClain help me learn and understand global finance and economics, but also kept the class updated on today's news that relates or affect the course.
I enjoyed the current events portion of the lectures. I liked how he made the course relevant.
Professor McClain is very knowledgeable in the field of Economics. He teaches us well. He is open to questions and he knows how to explain the material so we understand.
I found all of the sections on exchange rates and monetary and fiscal policy to be the most valuable, because I can apply what I learned to the situations going on in real life. I thought the links that Professor McClain provided to articles, tables, and videos were also valuable in that they provided another means of communicating applicable information.
I think the PowerPoints being online were fairly helpful. As well, explanations, especially on calculations, made sense once explained. I also feel that it was helpful to not have textbooks because it saves us, students, money.
The country analysis project was very educational.
Notes sheet during exams
No textbook was required and all the slides were available on Laulima
Current news and how our lessons related.
I liked how he allowed us to have a cheat sheet. That was super helpful. The instructor was very clear about things and posted everything we needed on Laulima.
Refreshing my mind about economic concepts
Learning how to compare the performance of each country and what factors of each country to take into consideration when deciding on who to invest in.
I like that everything is well organized and a book isn't required. I appreciated the resources available on laulima and the hints on the exam were really helpful.
The projects that we researched was valuable being that we got the chance to explore the economy and well being of different countries.
the graphs and videos were interesting and helped me understand the concept and statistics better
The only helpful thing I learned in this class was the hedging and arbitrage and that was because it helped me in my Fin 321 class.
I liked his PowerPoints. they were very thorough and really helped when I was studying for his exams.
His expertise in this course
We didn't need to buy the book to learn
We learned a lot of information about the economy that could easily be applied to real-life situations. I feel much knowledgeable about the subject and I now understand what is happening in the US and world economy.

Explain and prepare students for the test much more.
More feedback on the papers given on how we can get the total 7/7 score.
His teaching style and methods are already seamlessly catered to student's needs. Please continue to do so. Laulima was definitely an invaluable tool for this class. There were a lot of useful information he provided that were not only helpful in helping us prepare foe the exam but reinforce our understanding in subrelated topics.
more practice problems
I enjoyed the stories most of all. I find that when teachers relate through stories it is easier to remember concepts.
Have class practice with formulas and recognizing where to use certain formulas more in depth
David Mcclain is very enthusiastic about the course he is teaching. I was delighted to be able to have a course taught by him.

I think that he should try to stop covering so much density of material and have a greater focus on what matters. He wanted us to know everything and allowed us to use cheat sheets and a lot of the class still struggled because the material was too dense. I know he used to be the present but he needs to realize this is not a 600 level course. it is 313 and we do not have the brain capacity or time to learn remember and cover the ridiculous amount of materials that were supposed to be learned in the tests. also, i think that if he is going to give exam clues, he should use them on the tests, stop trying to be so tricky, and actually allow us to know the information. tricking us and not using the exam clues does nothing to higher our knowledge, it just stumps us. what is the point of that? we are paying to be educated. not tricked.
Maybe have some of the math problems as take home assignments and then go over them in class. I felt overwhelmed on the exams because I was not as confident as I needed to be on the exam.
More review sessions for exams, hard to figure out what to study for.
Maybe a couple small hw assignments
Maybe to make sure students understand the computations more
Extra Credit or any type of paper/report to make up for bad exams.
Professor Mcclain is a great and very knowledgeable teacher. He is very patient and is there for questions. Although im not a very big fan of lecture based class i did learn in his class. I would prefer more hands on activities just to get a full understanding on the materials.
The tests, I feel, are designed to trick students and it almost seems like Professor McClain does not want his students to succeed. Instead of placing three correct answers and forcing students to select all the right ones, he should add another "all of the above" option to decrease confusion or simply list only one correct answer to the question. The way he grades his tests are so confusing it is hard to understand. He understands how boring he can be and does nothing to improve on it. Youtube videos are not the answer. I also don't agree with the dollar he pays to that girl in my class every time he mentions his personal life experiences in lecture. I would better understand some of the content if there are real life examples that I can relate too. He treats experiences as things that he shouldn't speak about but I enjoy hearing them and feel that it can be a strong tool for instruction.
Nothing,Professor McClain's current teaching style and method is excellent and flawless. Not only are his style and method efficient and easy to follow, it doesn't give us students the same heavy pressure to learn unlike other classes.
The second half of the semester is a bit packed. I hope Professor McClain could put more material in the first half the semester. Moreover, the second Midterm is very hard.
Maybe have a smaller class size, or make sure that those in the back can hear. I sit in the front, however due to the size of the room, I'm not 100% sure how well everyone in the class can hear the subject material.
Please post sample papers for your students to read and use as examples when doing their write- ups. It was difficult to determine what exactly you wanted from the students in order to obtain an excellent score.

More opportunities for credit.
I found the second exam to be way too long. Most of the students couldn't even finish the exam. Also, the lectures are kind of boring at times but I feel Professor McClain tried his best to make it interesting.
Need more exam clues or sample problems
With the layout of the room it has been difficult at times to hear what the professor is saying.
Perhaps some extra credit material could be added to the curriculum to help students gain extra learning and help their overall grade.
i would like the teacher to explain the projects much better and maybe even post examples. He also graded our written projects hard and i feel his test were too long to be completed within the time period. When he grades our exam, he grades it like a SAT where if you mark the wrong answer or miss a answer then your exam would be marked down.
Be more clear on what you want for the project. I feel like projects with less content and more graphs were graded better than papers with high quality content. Be more clear about what you will be testing on and what is important. Don't test on things you have only mentioned once in class.
I know it is difficult because there are so many students in this course but if he can find a way to make the classes more entertaining. It was boring to listen to him lecture the whole class period and when the class is so large it becomes difficult to focus on the material being taught.
More engaging with students so that we can fully comprehend what he is trying to teach us
I think it may be better to have a smaller class size.

There are many Professors in the U.H. system that I would group into a "Do Not Take This Course With This Instructor" category, which would include Professor McClain. If it weren't for the fact that I have to kill time between class and work, I wouldn't come to his class. The best thing he does for the class is upload his powerpoints to Laulima.
I would definitely recommend Professor McClain to other students interested in taking BUS313 class.

This is the first class where there is so much information to learn, but no textbook was needed. A lot of material is covered in class and each powerpoints was very descriptive and helpful.

I am glad that I got the chance to learn with your class this semester. You are an awesome teacher. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
He is a great teacher. He responds quickly to e-mails and is willing to help whenever you ask. This class was difficult but he know his material and I learned a lot. I think he did a great job.
very hard subject matter. Teaching must reflect the difficulty of this subject matter, in other words, easy up a little.

Learning leadership styles and guest speakers
The personal experiences from McClain and well as all the guest speakers.
Guest speakers were a good way for us to relate to professionals.
I really enjoyed when we got into groups and answered questions based on past and/or hypothetical situations. The guest speakers were very informative. It would have been nice if it could they could have had the time to talk with students after class to give more information and to take the opportunity to bring such a successful person (from in and outside of Hawaii) into our networking contacts groups. Professor Mcclain's ethos was well-established upon learning of his experience as Dean, and he has a respectable reputation for having been one of the best that UH has ever seen. He had a lot to offer us, and he maybe a little too humble in his own experiences. He could have been a "guest speaker" for us to interview as well.

Group work
I would strongly suggest grading rubrics so that students are able to know what is expected of them.
I think I listed them above, but if I had to add anything more I would say more in-class activities and more discussions on how we can apply what we learn to our future careers. Maybe taking more tests as to assess our leadership and personalities...how we can become better or the leaders we want to be. This would help to give us a road map so we can navigate to our goals.

Really enjoyed hearing from guest speakers. Class was predictable, grading was fair, and our review of course content was thorough.
I think the time of the class may have put things at a disadvantage. While it may have fit our schedules, it was still late afternoon-many of us were tired and not in an optimal mindset for learning and listening. Regardless, Prof. Mcclain was very professional, kind, and collaborative. He empowered us, and the class culture seemed more like what I would imagine a graduate course to feel like...as if we were colleagues or interns rather than students. Very effective.

6. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
I've found that the information we gathered for our analyses projects is vital in many of my other classes.
The clues he gives us for our exams and demonstrates to us how to solve problems
The teacher gave test question hints.
Lectures placed on laulima.
His real world experience and complete understanding of the topic. We never asked him a question that he couldn't answer and he always responded with respect - "That's a great question..." At times I asked him to explain a concept again and he always did so with patience. I learned more in this class than almost any other in my three years at Manoa. I always wanted to sit in class longer and ask him a dozen more question. I truly value the education I received in his classroom.
We solved the problems together, but he allowed each student enough time to try the problems. Most teachers rush through the slides, he made sure we all understood before he moved on to the next topic.
Professor Mcclain's expertise in economics made this difficult topic easy. From simple macroeconomics to the exchange rates of currencies, Professor Mcclain made it all easy to understand. His unique teaching style coupled with his experience made learning very enjoyable.
Unsure, the class was very hard for me, maybe my lack of knowledge going into the class, or my lack of interest in the subject.
nothing at all
Professor McClain was able to make the class room environment seem very open and comfortable. This made me as a student much more relaxed and willing to ask for clarification if needed.
The lectures and power points were very helpful.
I thought the PowerPoints were most valuable. They directly linked to the subject matter Professor Mcclain was teaching us, and in such a way that it reinforced, rather than confused us.

I really enjoy his teaching style. He meets my needs in understanding the course material by giving sample problems, being interactive, providing powerpoint presentations, and giving a thorough lecture. I do not see any room for improvement in this course.
More hands on work such as; breakdown of calculation problems, thoroughly explain graphs and give examples of each.
Textbook optional.
I personally relate very closely to the topic, but some students complained to me that it has no relevance to them. Kids! :) Maybe find a way to relate on a more personal level? I don't know how to teach people to appreciate what they don't yet know affects them, but I wish there were a way to do that. How to help a young person understand the personal relevance of Y = C, I, E, G on a global basis? Hmmm. A challenge for a better mind than mine!
The multiple choice questions are very difficult because there can be more than one correct answer. Instead it would be more helpful to pick the best answer for each question.
There are no suggestions for improving his fantastic class.
Maybe engaging the whole class more could keep everyone's interest and attention better.
Teacher is stubborn, bias, not helpful, not a good listener. It is only a one way street with him. Need new teacher please.
Continue to tell your amazing anecdotes. They bring humor and life to a class where the subject matter can cause some students to lose interest.
Keep doing what you are doing. The course is good as it is.
Do not require students to purchase the textbook.

Great course. Prof McClain is very approachable and you will learn a lot.
I was challenged to do well in this class - I had to work hard to learn the material because many of the concepts were challenging to grasp and new to me. But I am very happy with the education I received in return for my hard work.
Fantastic professor, and i thank him for his class.
Horrible teacher. Pretends to be nice. Fake. No one learns anything in his class. No one pays attention in class. There is no point to this class whatsoever.
The book in my opinion is not necessary. Professor McClain is a very effective lecturer and I feel that if you take notes on what is said and review the power points, you are able to grasp a deeper understanding rather than simply reading the chapters.
Good class and good teacher.
Very knowledgeable professor. I am thrilled to have had him as my teacher and will recommend him to other friends needing to take a BUS313 course.

Interacting with classmates and going over cases of each chapter that emphasized the concepts of the course materials.
I enjoyed having amazing guest speakers. This class was one of the best I have ever had in University this far because of the opportunity to communicate with many very intelligent people - our Professor, guest speakers and other students.
Learning about leadership strategies is something you can grow from and use in all aspects of life. We learned fundaments that make a good leader. Which is very valuable to know this information because in turn we can use it to grow and become strong leaders within the different dimensions of our lives.
McClains insight to the real world. Real life examples to get us thinking about our future.
Mr, Mcclain is a truly inspiring individual. Good experiences we can learn from.
The speakers that came into class were very insightful and were my favorite part of the class.
This course provided a lot of theoretical material about the concepts that we have been learning about and gave opportunities to communicate what we learned to the class.
I really liked the book, it had a lot of good information and good cases to learn from.
I found the class discussions about the different types leadership and the cases that were at the end of each chapter valuable and helpful. I also found the guest speakers helpful in learning about leadership.
Speaking practice
case studies
The Financial Crisis Leader Essay.
I really enjoyed the guest speakers who are from all different types of leadership backgrounds
Professor McClain is an outstanding example of a teacher that is aware of leaning styles. He engages his students with interesting subject matter and challenges them to think critically. He also inspires students to be more curious about the ways that they will lead in the future. Also the book was quite helpful and appropriate. Professor McClain's experience combined with the material makes ofr an outstanding course.

Provide reasons to how he grades the group/individual projects. We were confused as to getting praises that we did well, yet the grades we were given did not fully match what he said. Feedback to why points were taken off would be greatly appreciated.
It would be nice to attend some business event as part of the class. Possibly the Business Night organized by Shidler College of Business or some presentation/lecture or small seminar by some well-achieved leaders.
Nothing..I thought the course was excellent. Definitely one of my favorite of the semester.
More teaching by McClain himself, to many boring group presentations. My favorite classes are when McClain is up there talking/teaching.
less cases
I think that the case studies need to be imporved upon so more students take part in them during class.
Please provide some feedback on ways we can improve in things like the presentations and the guest speaker papers. If students are able to understand what areas they were weak in and because of those weaknesses they got some deductions, then it will be more defined on how the students can do better next time.
I guess it wasn't too clear on how he graded our presentations.

More set schedules
maybe a couple less case studies
Professor McClain is an outstanding example of a teacher that is aware of leaning styles. He engages his students with interesting subject matter and challenges them to think critically. He also inspires students to be more curious about the ways that they will lead in the future. He exposes his students to many mediums and is knowledgable about learning styles. One possibility for change would to have the students each prepare at least one question for the professionals who come to speak.

No changes necessary. The design of the writing assignments are in good balance to the course.
Possibly having two drafts for the final paper would be good. Then we could put together both drafts and improve it before making final changes and turning in our final paper.
Nothing. they were challenging but do-able.

Mahalo! It was truly an amazing experience to be part of this class - it motivated me to continuously improve my skills and knowledge. It also motivated me to strive to become an intelligent person. Every single time I walked out of the classroom I had a lot of thoughts about what I want to achieve in life and what I want to learn. I also liked the Professors attitude towards us. I often felt like we are graduate students; I definitely felt inspired by such respectful attitude towards us.

6. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
how available the teacher always is to clear something up if needed.
i think writing on the chalkboard made concepts easier to understand.
I found that the current events material assisted my learning in class.
Using the blackboard helped a lot. Thank you!
learning the stock market and how an economy moves due to certain changes within the economy. And learning about FX's.
He posts all of the slides online. He is always available to talk to and is extremely knowledgeable about the course material. Overall great guy and great professor, just not most entertaining.
The lectures on the blackboard were helpful in going in depth into the material. I also found the Powerpoints to be valuable for the exams, especially the key points. I thought the information regarding exchange rates were the hardest, but also valuable.
the powerpoints
the clues he'd give anout upcoming exams
I really enjoyed when current events were talked about in class. A lot of the European debt crisis I had heard about in passing and only had a surface understanding about. Having about them in class gave me a better grasp on them.
Mr.McClain is very knowledgable and i learned a lot from him
Incorporating real world issues into the course
Exam clues, because his exams are very tricky.
teacher was helpful
Understanding the world of macroeconomics and the value of currency in the exchange rate.
Having the powerpoint presentation before class made it helpful to follow along. Writing information on the blackboard made us take notes.
Showing examples and working out lectures on the board and highlighting the important topics.
Having the report due in sections.
the exchange market
the review sheets and practical examples
APEC
The way he related theories back to current events making it easier for us to see how they are applied.
power point is so helpful for students
I think the information about currency exchange was really helpful. I also liked that we learned about APEC while all the leaders came to Oahu.
APEC stuff
Going over the real life problems.
current issues about class' topic
PowerPoint slides, lectures, and examples.
Dr. McClain's stories and examples really helped me grasp the material. He really goes the extra mile to make sure you understand it.
The explanation of topics when he wrote on the chalkboard was the most helpful to make me understand the material.

powerpoint is okay for theory. blackboard is better for problems.
Keep using the blackboard and give study guides.
None, I enjoyed the format of this course, it was fair, and easy to understand.
The blackboard lessons were much more involving. It stopped people from zoning off and made students take notes. I learned the most at these moments. Other than that, If the class was a bit more involving I suppose it would be nice.
I suggest continuing to incorporate current events because this makes it relevant to the students and I really like to see the application of what we're learning. I also like the blackboard lectures because it outlines clearly what we should know. I think it might help to have more examples, especially for the 3rd part of the material because it's the hardest to comprehend.
Allow for more student feedback- Very rarely was there a purposeful discussion. Also, multiple answers to multiple choice questions needs to go. I (and others) spend more time second-guessing ourselves. In traditional mulitple choice, if a student has studied, the answers get narrowed down to one or two choices...
make attendance mandatory.
more examples of word problems, more exam clues
Please go over the type of problems that will be on the test more. I was able to solve most of them but many times I had to take an educated guess as to how to solve them. Sometimes problems on the test would pop up that I had never seen in class before.
The only suggestion i have would be to focus on the problems for the exam since i found myself caught off guard with some of the problems.
provide/go over more in class examples of the problems that need to be worked out
provide a review sheet or sample problem handouts before the tests.
Showing more examples would help. Also, maybe not make the multiple choice questions so tricky or put too many of them where there is more than one answer. Also, providing maybe at least 5 points extra credit it always good for students to boost their grade and raise their spirits that they could do well in the course.
need more real world examples examples pertaining to the students lives
emphasize the important parts that will be tested on our exams
I would suggest having a few problems that students can do on their own to practice for the exam.
Nothing
None
Tests were quite difficult and unforgiving. I did not like the multiple choice/true or false style used. Maybe more short answer would help. I felt that exams tested memory rather than understanding.
Some of the material was kind of interesting but the monotone made it seem boring and made me sleepy.

good class. subject matter is a little difficult but mcclain made it bearable
I think the exam should be more structured. The short answer questions were random.
The question for the 1st guest lecturer, Paul seemed a bit irrelevant since it his lecture skipped over a lot of slides. However, it was not hard since there was only 1 question on the exam about it. I think I would've preferred the final not to be cumulative since there is so much material, but the cheat sheets help a lot. I think it helped that the 3rd paper was combined with the 4th. It really helps when the material covered in class is relevant to the paper because then it helps to know what you want. Overall, I really liked the class and it was very clear that the professor was knowledgeable about the subject.
kind professor, tries hard to accommodate to students' needs
professors shouldn't be allowed to have trick questions on exams.
Professor Mcclain is a kind professor. He takes the time to get to know everyone in the class by their first name. He is willing to accommodate others if they need it. He is a very knowledgeable person in his field.
I'm not a fan of economics but Professor McClain was really able to get me interested in the topics that we talked about.
I enjoyed taking the class. The professor is very knowledgeable of the topic.
Tests were too unforgiving. A better test style should be used since it makes up so much of our final grade
Having guest lectures made it an interesting class but the professor wasn't there, which was weird.

7. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
The most valuable thing I am taking from this course has to be the friendships and acquaintances I've made with my classmates and instructor through open discussions and group presentations.
I feel the case analysis assignment. It helped me to see the connection between the concept and the dilemma of the case.
Learning concepts of being a leader. Professor McClain is very helpful, and genuinely cares for his students.
group study and case study help my understanding a lot.
The student interaction
class discussions were valuable, other than that, not a whole lot.
The in-class discussions.
I really liked the textbook. It put numerous leadership styles in a short, clearly written format. There was a nice amount of graphics and charts to make things even more clearer. The weekly case write ups were also helpful with learning the chapter's material, even though most of the cases didn't make much sense and could use an update to be more realistic and modern.
The professor had real life personal stories that he skillfully connected to what was happening during that particular class.
I found the discussions most valuable because it helped me to better understand the concepts and hearing the topic from different perspectives helped me to reconsider my opinions as well.
I liked how he took the time to help us revise our papers and improve our writing. I also liked the team presentations because it allowed everyone to engage in conversation of the topic. Enjoyed this course.

Aside from the role playing, keep doing what you're doing, it seems to be getting a good response.
Since it's a writing intensive class, I would say that I wish I'd hear about the writing tips from your experience of producing professional reports.
Learning the concepts of being a leader is good, but learning how to be a leader is better. Watching videos of how to be a leader would be most helpful.
I would like a little more direction as to what material is relevant in each chapter as it pertains to the final.
McClain answered his students in a condescending way when approach privately for help. He is very critical on the presentations and essays but is unwilling to help and provide suggestions for improvements. When asked for clarification on my essay and how I could improve it he simply stated "I'm not the one writing the paper!". He also doesn't provide explanations for why he gave the grades he did. McClain didn't actually do any teaching, each week the students presented a chapter in the book and he simply provided comments and opinions. He is teaching a class on leadership when he is a terrible leader himself. Professor McClain should stick to his specialty, finance and economics. The class is a waste of time and money considering I could have read the book and not taken the class and be just as knowledgeable as I am now about it.
I would not include role playing for this course material. I would also mix up the groups (if it is a small class) that way the students are able to strengthen their interpersonal skills with different personalities and it would (hopefully) encourage more group discussion because everyone is interacting with each other more.
The class that we had to act out the cases was not very useful. I think if we had advance notice to prepare something as a group to act then it might have been a little more effective.
As we discussed in class. Having some more time in class to develop ourselves as leaders would be helpful.
I believe that it might be useful for future courses to incorporate material on how to become a leader. Other than that I liked the way that McClain set up the course with a mixture of presentations, discussions, and lectures.
Like we discussed in class, it would be more interesting if we could somehow see how the topics in class are applied in real life. Possibly find a way to incorporate examples in the real world with the types of leadership styles we learned in class. Also, it would be great to see how we could become better leaders too rather than just learning about leadership styles.
Nothing to really improve on. Timeline for turning in the assignments were reasonable. However it was kind of stressful to turn in a case analysis every week because some of use forget to do it and we have a lot of things to do. But overall, it's college so we should be able to handle it. The grading was somewhat unfair because it is a reflection and some of the cases did not relate to the chapter, so points shouldn't be taken off for what we said in the papers.

21. What changes would you make in the writing assignments?
The case studies seemed to be subjective as we answered the questions but it seems we were graded on a 'right or wrong' scale and were penalized for our interpretation of the questions. Case studies should be pass or fail as long as content reaches the minimum 200 words and pertains to the asked questions.
I would say more frequent feedback on writing mechanics.
I would feel more comfortable with an informal paper in regards to the guest speaker. No limit for the amount of words on the APEC paper.
The writing assignments are fine, its the instructor's approach to grading and helping the students with the writing that I would change.
The grading criteria should be explained with more clarity. I felt at some times the "response" papers were graded on a strict measure that did not make sense since it is a response paper.
All writing assignments are useful. I really enjoyed the guest lecturers. I really like to hear people's experiences and the things that have led them to the place they are at.
none
I would space out the times between the first and second drafts for the guest speakers so the students could receive feedback and be better prepared when writing the first draft for the second guest speaker.
only the case analysis needs to be changed. The reflection papers and the APEC paper was good and reasonable.

I had a good time and looked forward to our class sessions
I will always remember the quote you said in class. "I have written you a long letter, but if I had more time...I would have written you a shorter one" Mark Twain.
There should be a new class created on how to be a leader separately, due to inefficient time.
I enjoyed this class a lot and learned many things about leaderships. Because this is a small class, I had a chance to talk to most of classmates. I was happy to take this class from Dr. Mcclain.
I am not sure where I stand as far as my grade in this course. I am also not sure how to best prepare for the final exam.
I wouldn't recommend taking this course with Professor McClain, Professor Suarez is far more suitable to teach it.
Thank you!
More personal leadership growth would be nice. I would have loved to learn the most effective leadership style for my personality, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
I enjoyed McClain's enthusiasm for the topic and his enthusiasm toward his students. He showed that he cared more about the personal growth of the student over the grade. It opened the students up and opened the course up for a variety of opinions and allowed for mistakes to be made.

6. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
I thought that the focus of the global economy was valuable due to globalization of the world economy. The thought process on a macro-level was helpful in understanding the concepts and events today. I enjoyed the course project that was broken into smaller papers. It was a load off our shoulders and also helped me to refine what types of information Professor McClain was seeking. It wasn't a hit or miss type paper, thankfully.
Teacher interacted well with students and understood student's capacity.
The review session were the most helpful. I often found myself getting lost in the class and the review sessions and exam clues really helped to clear up some of my confusion.
Splitting of the project into a few parts. Having frequent revision sessions.
I found review sessions very helpful. I also thought that the in class activities helped bring the material to the real world.
I found the information about how the central banks and government can control interest rates and the money supply as one of the most relevant chapters, because I can now connect outside factors to the news reports that I hear and magazines that I read.
Review Sessions
Going over the course material before the exams really help because it helps to organize what to study for when exam time comes.
Country comparason
The now topics at the end of the course
I found the reviews and exam clues extremely helpful. Not only were reviews thorough, they helped solidify my understanding for the concepts in this course. Also, the reviews and exam clues helped aid in my studying for the exams.
class participation kept me active in my own education and review sessions before exams were really helpful
The written paper analyzes of various countries' economies was very helpful in getting a sense of international economics.
Learning about how the world economy works, how the value of currencies happened.
The real world examples and stories helped a lot to punctuate the difficult course content and add context. Everyone needs to know about the global economic environment and how related financial concepts work!
The cheat sheet. And the mere, not having to go to class aspect.
The interaction and practice he gave us.
Prof. McClain is very organized and gives great examples to help us understand this very difficult material.
I think this is the one class that I've taken in Shidler that relates to international business. This was also one of the few classes that I learned the broader perspective of economics. My other classes, as an entrepreneur major, are more focused and relate to businesses.
I found it most valuable that we had such an intelligent teacher. The professor related the material to real-life situations, which made the material much easier to understand. This is not easy in economics. I believe this is probably the best and most informative class I have ever taken. I would take any class this professor would teach. I believe that students who take his course are pushed to achieve great things, while doing so without too much stress. I especially liked how the professor gave readings and articles that the students could read to understand how the concepts of the class are being applied in the real world.

14. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
The second exam covered a lot of content. It was very difficult to go through everything once within the given time period let alone to double check the answers. Future students could potentially benefit from having a shorter second exam, and instead of having a cumulative final we have 3 exams each covering its own individual section. Another improvement to the course would be more tie-in with how this course relates to our development as BUSINESS students. I felt this brief understanding of international economics should have been something we take along with our micro and macro economics courses. Also the content of the powerpoints is dizzying. There is truly so much information to sort through and which to focus on for our exams. Cheat sheets or none they did not help much.
Could place more emphasis on the written problems and computations, less on the multiple choice.
Interesting exam format - I like it, however, too little marks are allocated for open-ended questions.
more study questions
I felt that covering nine chapters for the second exam was a bit much as far as the breadth information for the exam. I felt this also did not allow the material to be throughly reviewed. At times I was not sure if I had questions, because I had not processed the information fully. I also feel that a comprehensive final sets expectations of the student rather high, since they also have other finals to study for as well.
Less PowerPoint. Try more interactive methods, like typing out an outline with blanks, and having students follow along filling in the blanks.
Go over the paper assignment expectations more.
The schedule of the midterms could of been better, like what was mentioned in class
make the text recommended instead of required.... it was really expensive and i didn't use it at all... felt like a wasted investment... maybe cut down on the required readings, too. or go over them in class more.
I think that an exam schedule needed to be reconsidered. We just finished exam#2 last week and we are going to have the final soon. We have only two chapters we are going to learn until the final even though we had to study about 10 chapters for the exam#2.
More hands-on approach to learning would be better considering a lot of the material on tests was not explained well enough.
more exam-like problems.
Instead of the constant lecturing, i would love to see more student handouts so we can work through the concepts as they are being explained. Otherwise i thought it was very difficult to understand, retain, and organize all the information.
b/c the content was intense - i would have preferred mini tests along the way - instead of 2 major tests where i felt like i was cramming info in, instead of digesting and comprehending.
I don't really know. Economics is really not enjoyable to me at all. There is so much gray area. Also it seemed like a history class as well. I really don't know. I would suggest not to be such a harsh grader and give us credit for going to class because those lectures are LONG and drag on. Its hard to concentrate also when every other person in class is on their lab top looking at sites that aren't even relevant to the class!
Some more visual/audio supplements.
This class is to hard but Prof. McClain does a great job in helping the students do the best they can.
In terms of the course, I do find the lectures to get tedious because I sleepy from just powerpoint slides. I think it would help if we got to do more activities or watch more cool videos. In terms of the teacher, Professor McClain was very enthusiastic, which made a boring subject, entertaining and interesting.
The writing was hard and he didnt really explain it in his lecture on how to find the answers he wanted. Really vague.

I enjoyed Professor McClain's class, it was interesting but not completely relevant. I do hope he enjoys the gift we will have gotten for him.
Thanks UH Manoa for providing exceptional professors.
Liked the way you penalized yourself for saying "when I was your age" :)
I thought the tests were very challenging and found myself both time stumped to think or find answers. Though i remember going over it once in class i didn't remember exactly how it was completely which led to poorer performance.
I really enjoyed Dr. McClain's breadth of knowledge on the subject. He also had very god comprehension of teaching styles. I just wish we had broken up the back end of the book into two tests.
The book was awful and incredibly hard to read. Everything i learned from the course was from the PowerPoint slides and lectures. The ability to have multiple answers to multiple choice questions on the exam made them rather tough.
I'm glad it's almost over.
I loved that the huge paper was broken down into segments and were given different due dates. This allowed me to keep up with the work and not have to procrastinate and type up a huge paper the night before.
Tests are a bit too involved with a large volume of information. Too much information to put on one exam. All questions are not the same as powerpoints.
Best and most intelligent teacher I have ever had the pleasure of learning from.

1) Give some time for students to talk about their opinions on the presented chapters. 2) Since the term paper constitutes such a high percentage of our total grade, Dr. McClain may consider asking or encouraging students to do it earlier, so they may have enough time to correct it. For example, a student may not have enough time to revise it at the end of the semester if he/she did not do that well on the first draft.
Less personal things for the prof like guest speakers. He asks all the questions and doesnt let the students ask.
Still keep the group work discussing the cases before the presentation of group cases.

Best teacher I have ever had at UH. Very engaging and actually cares about each person genuinely. Will never forget this teacher.
The material in the text was boring and was not related to the business school. It seemed to be more of a psychology course than a course in leadership. It explained what a leader is, not how to be a leader, which I feel is necessary when dealing with the Shidler College of Business.

6. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Professor McClain is truly an expert in the material of the class. I felt happy knowing that I was learning from a well-recognized professor who has served as an economic advisor. He knew the real-world applications to the subject matter.
The most valuable and helpful thing about the course would have to be the first midterm study guide. The second midterm study guide was lacking study guide questions. I like how the first study guide had questions like the midterm because it gave me a better understanding.
The key slides that shortened the powerpoint material helped a lot because it's simply a lot of information that's provided
Review sessions 2x before the midterms
The additional supplemental information that Professor Mcclain did in class, and posted on laulima were quite helpful.
The map quiz was very insightful and helpful for me. It was really interesting to learn about all the different countries and their capitals. I feel like it will help me in the future!
I liked the global perspective, especially with the emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region since I am interested in different Asian countries. The discussions about current events also kept me up to date on things since I'm not one to read the newspaper or watch the news.
Everything in this course remains to me relevant and critical to learn, unfortunately the current state of our nation's economy has made this course that much more relevant. Everything we learned is some way or other being reported in the news lately--EVERYTHING we learned was valuable and helpful.
Exam review sessions
The powerpoints were helpful on learning the course. Although, the powerpoints were too lengthy in the beginning, the key slides were really helpful. Also, the videos we watched during the class really helped.
the many study guides put up on laulima and going over them before the exam were very helpful.
Learning how economics is significant to business. Exchange rates that maybe useful in the future when taking finance 321 The country paper helped us to apply economic materials learned into real life. This assignment also help develop my researching skills.
I loved the first quiz on countries and capitals... I didn't know where anything was until this quiz.
Professor McClain is a nice teacher, who works on explaining concepts so that everyone can understand. He was able to answer all questions asked in class, and overall seems like he definitely knows his stuff!
The research paper on my country.
Learning about the exchange and how to understand it.
I found that he used relevant information from the text to apply it to the present. He was able to relate information that we were learning in class to present situations.
I learned a great deal on economy internationally and it gives me a better understanding of how other country operates.
What was most valuable and helpful about the course were the powerpoints available to students on Laulima. The powerpoints covered information from the text and were useful for studying. The country profile project was also useful as it allowed me to study and conduct research independently while learning new things about a different country.
I like learning about exchange rates. I know I will apply this in the future and its not something you learn about alot in school.
The teacher's knowledge of the subject.
Everything was straight forward.
I thought that the country report was a good project because it allowed us to use what we learned and apply it to a real world situation.
Professor McClain was very willing to answer any questions
the project and the notes we could use as a guide in our exams.
Course is straighforward, no surprises. Professor McClain lets you know what you need to know and does not waste your time. Accomodating and helpful. Relates topics to current domestic and international economic events.
The sample exam questions we went over in class helped a lot both to understand the material more as well as to help prepare for the exam itself.
Outside resources and his personal wealth of knowledge and stories.
Professor Mcclain's experience and in-depth knowlege he possesses. Made the course a lot easier to understand and he always tried to relate terms to modern events.
I think that reading the textbook in addition to attending class lectures really helped me grasp and understand the course material... Professor Mcclain also was willing to help students outside of class when they were struggling to grasp a certain subject...

Althought Professor McClain uses an array of examples from current events, maybe he could use even more.
Do not forget to go over all material before midterm. The calculations really killed grades on the second midterm.
I think having more exams with fewer chapters and having it not cumulative would help students struggling, this way, there's less information and chapters to take into account. The amount of information and number of chapters is a lot.
More practice on the math problems. Maybe an example uploaded on laulima, so students can refer to it when studying for the exams.
Review exam materials a little more extensive. Descriptions get really narrowed down and simplified sometimes, but on exams the questions are longer and more specific.
The exams with different possible answers is not fun and it is almost confusing for me. My brain was taught to have only one answer for multiple choice so by having many possible answers it severely confused me. It's also like trick questions. Maybe having more quizzes with 3-4 chapters instead of exams with 7-9 chapters. And reducing the number of slides was very helpful!
Always condense the slides as much as possible to the material that is relevant. It helps keep the students focused, save paper, and save time in the classroom to talk about the important issues.
his teaching methods were great! no improvements. =)
Having all of the powerppoint files available at the beginning of the semester for printing
I really like the teaching method right now but I wish we could have gone over more problems that required us to solve them in the exam.
It wouldn't hurt if he spoke louder, or used the microphone. Other than that, he was a great teacher and I enjoyed taking his class.
-Less politics and more business related. Course made us feel that we are taking a political science/econ course when this is a business course -Assign homework and points and in class problems that will help us on exam -Extra Credit to help poor test takers -Paper should be weighted more -Final exam should be non cumulative since it is a lot of material to remember at the end of the semester -Give more exams than just 2 (not including final) -Reduce the amount of material learned in class from the text because going over one chapter in one class session is not enough -Give good feedback on paper than just -Should be more clear on what you want on paper report so we can get the full credit on it -Use a microphone. Most people in the back can't hear. -Should tell us what to know from the articles read on the test -Organize materials better on Laulima -Give study guides early and tell us what to study for -Homework, Map Quiz, Country report should be increased on the weight scale for final grade -Everyone should pass your class when everyone is putting a lot of effort into your class and that grade curve makes it competitive to pass and earn a decent grade so hoping the curve is generous and big. -More pages of notes for exam -Reduce number of slides and be clear on what will we need to study on ppt slides
clean up the slides
A stronger review day before exams would be great!
Too monotonial. Don't spend the first 15minutes of class boring us. MOre effective review sessions.
Talking louder
He should come up with his own slides instead of using the text book slides because he brings up information not listed in the text and its hard to refer back to.
More activities and group projects please!
The exams were comprised of short answer math/arithmetic problem related to economic equations. I think it would have been very helpful if Professor McClain went over the problems more. Instead of compressing six different types of equations in one class session.

I feel that the map quiz could have been done in a better format as it was hard to see the map and the numbers and alphabets. Also, the constant changing between the maps made it hard to focus on that particular map.
More mini tests. Each exam contained too much information to study. It was overwhelming.
he's a good teacher. sometimes, the powerpoint makes it a bit boring
More time and emphasis on second portion (exam #2 contents) of course.
No suggestions for teaching style or methods.
The original power point sucks, please tell that to the author of the book, or use a different book next semester.
Just the equation part of the course was a little confusing. Maybe more practice problems with answers should be posted.
I think i'd like to see the students get a little more involved in class lectures... We do every now and then, however I think we'd be more attentive in class if we were engaged through asking questions or giving short presentations...

I learned a large amount in this class.
I guess it's tough to make economics enjoyable.
The course material is reasonably applicable for business majors.
Overall a good course, but towards the middle of the course material got really hard to follow. This was probably due to difficulty of material and time frame of the semester. Maybe incorporating other primary sources for learning other than mainly the ppt's, because sometimes the powerpoints can get a little monotonous.
Professor McClain is a great professor. He is insightful and intelligent and is always willing to help his students. He is one of the best professors I've had at shilder.
I'm note very enthusiastic about economics in general, so it was difficult for me to retain the information and get a complete understanding of the material. I did like the study guides that you prepared for the first exam. It helped narrow down the information that I really needed to study and learn. Country profile was interesting, but I had some difficulties finding good information. Very good teacher, but again, I'm not fond of the material because of personal preference.
I think, in any campus and with any professor, BUS 313 is just a difficult course in general. I feel lucky to have taken it with what seems to be the best suited, most qualified individual to teach it. It was his first semester to teach this course and I feel lucky to have ended up in his class. No matter where you go or who you take it with, the class WILL be hard. But, Prof. McClain took what could have easily been a boring, monotonous class (although at times, it was ineviatbly so) and tried his best to make the class relatable, relevant, and interesting to his students. It is really a shame that most of his enthusiasm was lost on the uninterested and often indifferent individuals of my generation. He tried his earnest to use current events and examples to make the course easier to understand. He led me to consider majoring in Economics(even for just a day). He has become, hands down one of my favorite professors of my college career. He is an amazing teacher and person. As a teacher he made sure he was clear, very understanding, generous, and reasonable. I would take any other course he teaches.

Good class. I've already recommended you. The 3 sheets of notes for the final were very generous and very much appreciated.
Thanks for the candies Give studying advice in advance was nice Thanks for sharing with us current events
The teacher has an amazing attitude. He also shows he cares, but understands we are all trying to survive college.
Great professor, It seems like he really cares about his students. Hard class topics, but he helped significantly!
The review for the tests should review everything that will be on the test. Also, we should go over the entire review sheet during the review and make sure that all equations needed are listed. Also, I like the idea of having notes but the tests are still hard.
McClain talks really soft in class. It is hard to hear him sometimes and a monotone voice never makes me enthusiastic about the material. Overall, I think he is a good professor and I woudl take a class form him in the future.

Class contained too much information to digest in one semester. Exams were difficult to take because of the amount of information was overwhelming and hard to digest. Less material or chapters covered would ultimately lead me to learn and maintain the information.
Textbook is not useful in learning material. Concepts actually seem more complicated, a waste of over $100.

Great
Thank you for an awesome semester... You are a very nice and understanding professor.. Have a wonderful Christmas break...

Learning different leadership styles and traits to become a future leader
Group discussions.
Having a rough draft and then a final. It helped improve my writing skills and gain the ones I've lost over time because most professors prefer only one paper, where most times content of paper is what matters and not so much grammar. Thank you.
The guest speakers were all very interesting. I learned a lot about life just by listening to what they have to say.
writing intensive credit
McClain himself was the president of UHM so our class could have his own experiences which were very helpful! I really like his course and would recommend this course to all of my friends.
I value his open-mindedness. Also, I like how he integrate different materials into the course.

Get more participation from students
Let the students talk...not necessarily present, but talk during a discusson. McClain often goes on and on by himself...and when he does want the students to talk, he calls on people rather than letting people speak on their own...so people's ideas get lost and the strong participators don't get a chance to shine. Overall, it just wasn't too much of a fun course.
A syllabus is usually the contract between a student and their professor. To change a syllabus in the middle of the semester shows one's students how unorganized a professor is. There are perhaps many reasons why, and most of them good reasons why changes were made. If these changes were made and said students had only this course to worry about it would be fine. It changed the items needed to complete the semester and the expectations. While all the changes weren't horrible or difficult, it did cause some problems in scheduling in comparison to other courses. Thank you for your time.
I think that we should figure out the course structure at the beginning of the semester rather than in the middle of the semester.
Assign presentations early in the semester so that students have more time to work on it.
no mid-semester changes
Maybe be clear about the objectives for this class at the beginning.

21. What changes would you make in the writing assignments?
I like how they were, as I would rather write a lot a few times rather than a little many times. I thought we could use more direction on our last famous/infamous leader essay.
Perhaps a better range of choices for types of papers to write. The Infamous/Famous leaders were perhaps the best. And perhaps instead of choosing a leader (first paper) we should have written about how said leader or leaders inspire a person.
I would change the last leadership assignment to be 1000 words rather than 2000 words since our last paper ended up being over 2000 words.
The writing assignments was just about right. We had ample time to work on it and received feedback to do revisions.

In the beginning of the course, the professor mentioned that some of his past students viewed him as being a nice guy, but a bit haughty. He still comes off this way...McClain is very nice, but when he talks during class it seems like he drops a lot of names and thinks quite highly of himself.
The order the chapters were taken matched well with other courses in the school of business I have been taking through the semester. It has proved useful and understanding for the other courses. It is wonderful to see connections to other courses. Thank you for a wonderful semester.
Knowledgeable about the subject matter. Provided great guest speakers.
