6. What did you like best about the course?
I absolutely loved this course. This course was by far the most valuable course I have taken throughout my entire career as a college student. I learned far more from this class, and gain many skills that will benefit me through the rest of my life. This class is far more applicable to my development both professionally and personally than any class I have taken at this university. This was the most unique and awesome opportunity I came upon throughout my college career.
Small group analysis and discussion; class bonding; problem solving
The open communication.
The close bond between teacher and students! I like the course content, amount of work, and it really does help me teach my class.
The freedom of teaching was unlike any other course taken here at UH
I enjoyed the small class environment. It gave me the ability to interact with my peers more freely and honestly.
- small class size - opportunity to build relationship with instructor and peers - student led activities and articles - plenty of opportunity for discussion - 2.5 hour class time - personality and attitude of instructor - written assignments and multimedia assignments
I liked how there was always an agenda to make sure that we as a class know what will be happening, whether we're able to attend or not.

21. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Every aspect of this course was valuable. Every class meeting, every assignment for 491, and the structure of the class was essential to the successful completion of the class.
Discussion and application of teaching techniques
The ability for me take control of the course and have professor Wurtzberg over see but not micromanage. I enjoyed the lively, attentive, assertive character traits professor Wurtzberg had. She was very knowledgable
The leadership and responsibility that I had in this class will help me for the rest of my life. Building bonds with Wurtzburg and the other SOC 491 students really encouraged me to be a better teacher and student. I now have a great resume, leadership skills, teaching experience, and good friends.
leadership skills
The learning concept activities were the most valuable in helping me teach my section.
- getting to know my instructor and peers - leading the freshman seminar and practicing how to prepare content in a relevant way to a specific audience - having to be prepared and engaged for EVERY single class. This preparation significantly deepened my understanding of sociological concepts, current events and relevant literature
I found the assignments to be the most valuable because it all combines skills that we all were exposed to while being a seminar leader.
22. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Nothing about this class was invaluable. Even the final research paper was essential for reflection and to gain as much as possible from the class.
Integration with Pearson

Trying to skype from home ;-D
my soc lab
The guest speaker from Canada was the least valuable aspect of the course for me.
- I would have liked to start preparing a draft of the soc 100 syllabus prior to the start of the semester - not being able to confirm the syllabus with the soc 100 students until the 3rd/4th week was a bit unnerving - it would have been helpful to have specific examples of how to utilize the pearson website
23. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
The opportunity to practice leadership skills
It help me build leadership skills and helped me find my inner strengths and weaknesses.
Wurtzburg is always willing and wanting to help her students. I learned so much by teaching; more than I have learned from any of my classes in a long time.
Susan was always valuable when issues came about and was consistently ready to help. she was also very acommodating
The other student leaders were very helpful by sharing their lesson plan ideas and discussing their progress. It was very reassuring to hear what they go through too. We all shared the same struggles and accomplishments.
- having a small class size because it is conducive to interaction and more personalized attention from the professor - having to organize and lead class time helped me learn sociological concepts far more effectively then just "showing up" for class and listening to a lecture; having input and ownership into class activities pushed me to be prepared all the time, and much more informed about the textbook and pushed me to look for other learning resources

39. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
The only suggestion I can make is to perhaps shift the course to MWF schedules. I wish I met with my student 3 times per week and I also wish we met for the seminar twice per week. The additional meetings each week would be greatly beneficial. This would add to the difficulty and the excessive demands of the class, but would allow for much greater feedback and would make receiving feedback and assistance more accessible.
Meeting twice a week?
I liked the picture presentations but didn't really like the "picture" part. I would rather just have the paragraphs/journals without the pictures.
a lesson on paper grading. though it is a case to case skill we could at least look at papers and practice thinking about assigning grades so we have a heads up to the challenge
Give leaders more lesson plan ideas.
- it would have been helpful to have a workshop at the start of the semester to brainstorm and discuss various types of assignments for soc 100, and assess the benefits and drawbacks (essays vs. multiple choice tests. - It would be helpful to get a whole pool of assignment and activity ideas at the outset. Different student leaders will have different ideas/strengths. we were able to share these ideas over the first 4-6 weeks when we led an activity in 491, but having a collaborative workshop at the beginning to get ideas might help us all have more well-rounded assignments (appropriate amounts of writing, test types, variety in written, oral and multimedia assignments - I think as leaders, we need more guidance and oversight to identify the learning outcomes intended for soc 100 and assess how those can be met through assignments and activities from the outset of the course. I feel like our assignment and syllabus design had too much autonomy. I think it might be more effective to have scaffolding from a professor through this process, as opposed to a review and approval of our proposed syllabus/assignments - I enjoyed and learned from the 491 student-led activities and article discussions. However I think these activities could have been reduced in time, so that we could have more guidance, mentoring to deal with how to create rubrics, how to grade assignments, how to grade/respond to grammar and overall writing proficiency, how to design a good writing assignment, how to plan a multi-step writing assignment for soc 100 students to help them learn how to create an outline, research sources/journal articles, edit drafts, how to implement correct formatting and citation use. Other than ENG 100 or ENG courses, I feel like there is little in-course guidance to construct papers.
To improve the teaching of this course, she could have a set of standards or structure of what each leader should be teaching and doing with their students. I think that would help with knowing ahead of time what the students should definitely grasp other than assigning some chapters as the main frame of the course content. Since I wasn't explicitly told on how to go about teaching, I feel that I've learned more after the fact that I catered to the students in order for them to get things done in class. Overall, most of the time I felt like I was totally confused of whether or not I was doing a good job in teaching my students. I feel that a little more specific structure before teaching would have helped me in being a better student leader.

48. Other comments:
Thank you Sue, I really enjoyed this opportunity and will remember my experience with 491 for the rest of my life.
Highly recommended
I will genuinely will miss EVERYTHING about this class. I loved every minute of it and the entire experience. I felt a little overwhelmed when the class first started as I had never made a lesson plan before; I would maybe try to incorporate or emphasize the importance of how many lesson plans need to be made/ how to make effective lesson plans.
I wish I could teach this again knowing what I know now. It was a stressful yet amazing experience.
Being a seminar leader required me to revisit the majority of content that I had learned in this discipline and across disciplines in order to prepare relevant and informed class activities and assignments. In doing so, I reached a far deeper understanding of all of these concepts. I did far more reading and research every single week then any other class I've been in. Having to take responsibility for class time allows students (491+100) to prepare material that is of interest and importance to them. Having a personal connection to the material taps into students' own passions, which I think motivates their work. While I do not think that 491 is a course that is suitable for any student, I do feel that the student-centered learning model reflects tremendous benefits and profound learning outcomes that should be incorporated into all courses in a discipline. 491 students are "learning more" because we are investing more every single week. I think if the department wants to produce students who have better writing proficiency, research skills or critical thinking skills, students need to have a more integral role in course content and class time. This experience was incredible, and I feel much more knowledgeable as a Sociology major.
