Great Professor!

Tita Letty is very knowledgable about the Filipino language and culture. Her passion for teaching and her students are clearly visible and its great to see educators that display this type of passion. We would have fun in class! On the other hand, Tita Letty was very organized and had a lot planned for class, sometimes the amount of material we learn can be very overwhelming. But other than that, I enjoyed myself in this class.

Leticia Pagkalinawan is an excellent teacher, who knows a lot about her course. She is one of the most patient and understanding teacher that I know. She goes above and beyond to meet the needs of her students. As for me, I have such a busy schedule with such a complicated work schedule, and she tries to still fit me in where I am available. Awesome professor!

Out-of-class activities should not be a part of course grade. There are two required activities which account for 20% of the grade (two full letter grades). This is biased toward young, single students, especially those whom live in the dorms. The activities were held on non-class days. If they are required in the future, I highly recommend conducting them during class hours. While these activities may teach a bit about the culture, they are nearly useless for learning the language. If I speak to a Filipino, I don't expect to break into a song or start quoting movies. Completely unnecessary. Please remove these from the courses.

Tita Pagkalinawan is a very knowledgeable professor that is very understanding and willing to put time aside if extra help is needed. Over all a great professor and I hope to take her again next semester.

I appreciate Tita Letty's flexibility and willingness to help us students. One thing to improve on is making the assignments clear and having more structure to class time. If possible, follow the schedule provided at the beginning of the semester. Require at least one student-teacher meeting to go over progress.

Great professor and very helpful!

Tita Letty does a great job of teaching Filipino culture and values. I appreciate her lesson handouts/packets because they really helped me to understand the grammatical structures and conjugation patterns. Tita is also caring and provides a comfortable classroom setting that makes learning more enjoyable for each of us, and provides many different activities, such as games and movies, that make learning our language fun!

Professor Pagkalinawan is by far the best language teacher I have ever had. She not only teaches the language but also the culture. I think when learning a language it is important to be able to grasp the local customs and culture so you know where certain words get their roots and meanings. I feel sorry for the students that do not apply themselves because Professor Pagkalinawan provides all the tools that are vital to become a fluent speaker of Filipino. She puts her students first, always. She is a dedicated instructor of the Tagalog language and if it wasn't for her mastery of the Filipino and English Languages then I wouldn't be able to speak Filipino today. I am so grateful that the University of Hawaii finally employed a professor with her skillset. The other professors should take note of Professor Pagkalinawan's methods and incorporate them into their lessons. Professor Pagkalinawan is a true asset to the Filipino Language program. Thank you UH and maraming maraming salamat po Tita Letty! Ingat po.

Thanks for caring Tita Letty!

The instructor spoke to us a lot in Filipino, and while that is a good thing, more effort should be made to get the students to speak Filipino, rather than listening to the instructor speak the language. I would highly recommend FIL 202 be an English blackout course. Meaning that students would not be allowed to speak English, but only Filipino, so as to get the students more practiced in speaking the language. Other than that the course was very good.

Great! Enjoyed every bit of class! Definitely THE most memorable class I've ever taken at UHM :)

I loved Tita Letty. She's one of the few professors that I've had a pleasure to have in my whole college career that I felt that actually cared for her students. She's very enlightening and makes the course challenging yet fun at the same time. Any student who takes her class should consider themselves lucky to be in the presence of someone that is absolutely wonderful in my eyes. Maraming na maraming salamat po. :)

Professor Pagkalinawan is an excellent professor and teaches the Filipino language with enthusiasm. I have learned a lot being with her for an entire year. The only problem I had was the time management during class, but although we were behind schedule I still learned a lot. I would definitely recommend her to other students.

I think the level of difficulty for this course can be raised. I would like to see more grammar and vocabulary exercises. Tita Letty is a more than competent instructor who is considerate toward her students.

I love Tita Letty. Since I been taking this class for about 2 years just having her for my last year has been a blast. She has really helped me enhance my ability to speak the language even though I'm not that good but I felt even though I'm not that good she encouraged me to do my best and as long as I put effort into my work she was always there to guide me and she really understand where Im coming from learning a second language is really difficult and I think she understands that.

I love having Tita Letty as my teacher. I really wanted her to teach 201 so I could be in her class!

i recommend this instructor to anyone considering taking filipino.

I love Tita Letty's class & I want to take her for all my years of Filipino. Her class was interactive and encouraging. I'm not fluent in Filipino yet but Tita Letty has kept me encouraged && I am determined to learn it!!

I love Tita Letty! She is one of the kindest teachers I've had. She truly loves to share her knowledge of the Filipino language. My only suggestion is that Tita Letty show more assertiveness in the classroom. There were several students in the class that were a constant distraction to the lesson. They were constantly giggling and laughing, and would still not be quiet after being told to do so. Tita Letty is a great teacher, and I hope future students of Filipino come to appreciate her breadth and depth of knowledge as well as of the love she has for her students.

This is my second semester with Tita Letty's Filipino class. I have 2 more semesters of language and I will take her 2 more times and recommend her to my friends. She is the best Filipino instructor by far! If there are any students who badmouth her it is because they don't apply themselves and blame their failure on the teacher which is unfair.

Maybe more practice talking Tagalog in class. We could have used more conversation practice

Overall, Tita Letty was good. She seemed to be very well versed in the subject and was very nice and approachable. A couple of things I would say to improve on: sometimes she would go into some topics that seemed to be at a high level (like you would have to be a native speaker to know it), so perhaps the lesson could be more foreigner-friendly. Other than that though, she was good overall. I wouldn't mind taking her again. Also, Katipunan officers should be more approachable and actually reply to any questions and emails sent to them. Maybe even look into concerns or take suggestions from the Katipunan members. I've been in the club one year so far and not once have I heard them ask how the events were or take suggestions on how to improve them.

I love tita Letty. I feel not rushed in learning this language and she does a really good job taking time to help me understand what we where doing. Im always able to go to her for anything and I just think she really feels for her students. SHe did a really good job this semester.

Tita Letty is a kind, warm, and caring individual. Initially, I was quite indimidated by her and didn't know how to approach difficulty days. After I was able to talk to her outside of the classroom, she has been a great mentor to me ever since. She really cares about her students and it is visible to see that she really does want the best for them - something I have not really seen out of many teachers in my whole college career thus far. I would hope she teaches FIL 202 in the fall, but if that is not the case, I wish her the best of everything for whatever comes her way. Mahal na mahal kita, Tita!~ Maraming salamat para sa EVERYTHHING!~

Very friendly to students in class and out of class during her office hours.

Our instructor immersed us into the language by speaking it for most of the class and encouraged us to speak it when we had the opportunity (ex: asking a question). What was also great was that she included games that made the two hour class fun and productive.

I think for her first year at UHM, Tita Letty has done a great job in adjusting. At times, Tita Letty seemed a bit disorganized with the course schedule, but I think that was more a matter of adjusting to the Filipino program here at UH. Tita Letty is a great teacher. She is very knowledgeable of the Filipino language and is very willing to help each student gain better competency in speaking and writing in Filipino. If I continue Filipino next semester, I will surely take it with Tita Letty.

Tita Letty was very friendly and open to students' suggestions. She was always willing to spare time for me when I needed help. It would have been nice if we had more writing exercises in class so we could practice the sentence structures we learned. Tita Letty could sidetrack a little bit sometimes and there might have been a way to utilize the time we had more effectively. Overall she was a very dedicated teacher and I learned a lot from her.

Tita Letty is a great teacher!

Prof. Leticia Pagkalinawan was very qualified to teach this course. She is a native speaker of the Filipino language and explained everything there is to know to her new Filipino language takers like myself. If a student rated her poorly it was due to their (the students) excessive absences and unwillingness to learn. Prof. Leticia Pagkalinawan always welcomed students outside of class during office hours and non-office hours as well. She went above and way beyond the duties of a UH Professor to inspire, teach, and share the vast knowledge of the Filipino language and culture to us students. She is a true asset to the University of Hawaii. I hope other students have the priviledge to take a class with her in the future.

Tita Letty seems to be a good teacher. At times, though, it kind of felt that the course assumes that you know the Filipino already. I understand the idea to immerse the students in the language, but it really would be helpful to have a translation in English once in a while to have some sort of reference. And I have found some vocab on tests/assignments that were never formally introduced to the student. Other than that though, the course was great. Lots of fun. And maybe this isn't the place to say it, but having Katipunan participation required is not cool. I think, sure, maybe the drama/songfest stuff and the picnic could be required. But I really do think having to go to all those meetings and do all that extracurricular stuff should NOT be necessary. People are busy, we have lives to live. Not everyone can do all of this stuff (especially since it's never said in the beginning). It also doesn't help that the leadership in the club doesn't respond quickly enough and tells people AT THE LAST MINUTE! Seriously, make it optional and just give extra credit for doing it. Don't hold people's grades hostage just to get everyone involved. We're adults: let people decide if they want to be active in a club that everyone is forced into.
