18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
He has well developed communication and interpersonal skills. He had a personal background with the special type of program/class that provided unique insight and knowledge to inform his teaching. He made a great effort at getting-to-know and build rapport each student individually.
He is very supportive of students. He practices active listening. He also tries to advise students in a supportive manner without down talking.
I felt that Marty was open to my questions.
He was very knowledgeable about various subject material and taught in a way that made it easier to understand. He made me enjoy learning, which is incredibly difficult to do. I feel I learned a great deal from him, in this class.
Martin Hargadon was very willing and able to work with the adult learners in our class. His expectations were realistic and he was very open to comment and suggestions by the class. He never took anything personally and always tried to work things out for the best of the class. Great teacher for this type of student!
Marty was very approachable and was always willing to provide students with help. He also was very accomadating to the hectic schedule we had this semester. Since he graduated from an accelerated program, this helped him to understand what we as students were going through and he was able to provide us with comfort and support. I would love to have Marty as a teacher again. He's very enthusiastic, comforting and provides information in an interesting and entertaining way!!
Marty was easy to talk with and had lots of knowledgea and experience.
Marty has been through an accelerated program himself so he understands the stressor and experiences we are going through. He was very accomidating if we had schedule conflicts, etc. He was very knowlegeable in most areas (except for peds and women's health :)). But if he did not know something he would look it up and get back to us in a timely manner. I really enjoyed this class!
He was understanding and listened to students. Marty also provided us with positive feedback.
Marty clearly cares about the concerns and well being of his students. He is very approachable, which definitely contributes to the learning environment.
Marty is a very flexible and helpful instructor. He cares a great deal about how students learn, and spends a lot of time reviewing our assignments. I feel like I can approach him with any question or problem about the class, and he will help. I feel like he is doing his best to make us better students, and to prepare us for working in clinical settings.
Marty promotes a classroom environment that invites discussion that is valuable to our learning. He is understanding of our position as MEPN students and accommodates us to ensure that we are adequately learning the material.
He has a great understanding of the material and is able to present it in an interesting and organized manner. He went through a similar accelerated program so is very sympathetic to our needs both professionally and personally.
I just love the guy! He was super nice and flexible.
Approachable. He answers every question.
His willingness to address student concerns and alleviate fear and anxiety with regards to test taking. He is very respectful of all the students and extremely encouraging. He creates a very "learning friendly" atmosphere.
19. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Can't think of anything.
I think there were a few moments when Marty may not have been as open to some of my classmates questions as he was with mine.
Nothing.
Nothing!
Textbook needed to match the material.
I think that Marty could be a little more demanding with students. It was not an easy class, however - it did require real effort by students.
N/A
I found him exceptionally valuable for this subject.

24. Other comments:
Teachers text and students text should be the same. Text should be geared toward nursing, not doctors!
The textbook was meant for a med student not a nursing student. I think a more nursing oriented textbook would be beneficial for future classes.
This instructor was fair & impartial to everyone.
The text did not match the tests. Also I think a more basic, nursing text would have been more useful. Martin explained these concerns to us so at least we weren't left in the dark about the challenges this created. Martin did a good job working with the materials he was assigned.
The textbook was my only complaint for this class. We had to read out of one text and then were tested with questions from another textbook. I know this was not Marty's doing because he was required to follow a syllabus, however, I think the textbook and test questions should all come from the same book for later classes.
I really liked the book, however it was not related to Nursing science. I think that another book would be more appropriate for this level. Also, since we had this book it was difficult to study and obtain information for the exams since the exams were nursing science related. However, Marty gave us ample time to research for exams.
The Bates textbook did not seem appropriate for first semester nursing students, as it was intended for medical students or physicians. As a result, it glossed over some important basic information.
The clinical instructors are excellent. I would love it if the instructors rotated from group to group, so that we can learn from each of them, as they each have different areas of expertise.
i didnt like the Bates book...would have preferred Jarvis to purchase
The course was clearly slapped together. It seemed that the course text and instructor were selected a week before the course began. The course text was designed for NPs or physicians and it was frustrating when taking nursing centered quizzes and exams. I think that Marty did the best he could with what he was given, but I believe that the administration can do better about planning and providing ample time for the instructor to design the course.
The textbook was not appropriate for our level of learning. A textbook focusing on nurses and assesment would have been more practical and helpful with better understanding the concepts. Test material was more reflecticve of our knowledge however, not all questions on the test mirrored what we learned in class. There needs to be more of a lifespanhealth assesment focus.
I would take this instructor again, and recommend him to others.
The textbook required for this course was not adequate for our level. We needed a textbook for nurses, not for physicians.

24. Other comments:
He provided extra help with the overall orientation to the new experience of nursing and nursing school- so helpful the first semester! He was honest, fair, and intelligent.
It is frustrating that we were placed in clinical locations without our requests. People wanted to switch with each other but it wasn't allowed simply because of the additional paperwork. Thus, individuals who reside in Honolulu went out to Wahiawa and Kapolei for clinic and individuals who wanted to do clinicals on the westside were placed in Honolulu. We spent a lot of time and money in unnecessary traffic.
Very helpful in the off campus clinicals. Stayed ahead of all the students, and kept us thinking.
I really enjoyed this course. The lab experience was great. I feel that watching the videos first was extremely helpful. Having 4 instructors was nice since they have many backgrounds to pool from. There was ample time for practice. Marty and the instructors provided feedback and criticism of skills in an appropriate manner. They did not make you feel stupid or inferior and usually complemented as well as make constructive criticism.
