1. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| I liked the way the instructor clarified the subject better and had a different way in presenting the subject compared the lecture teacher. |
| the drawings that Trent drew out and throughout explained to us. I loved it.
he really broke everything down for me, and in lab he was always available to
help when our misunderstandings of certain curriculum. |
| Trent gave great explanations that were precise and to the point. |
| Class time was most valuable i wish there was more of it. |
| he provided examples of the real world to zoology for better understanding |
| all of Trents knowledge he shares with us in lab including his notebook. |
| This innstructor gave great examples and mnemonics to help us learn in this
course. |
| I really liked the instructor's lectures. He is very easy to understand, goes at a good rate as far as
information being presenting at a pace that is easy to follow. He gives us everyday examples of
how to apply what we are learning and always encourages us to ask questions if there is
something we don't understand. He is very fair and also personable. His explanations are clear
and easy to follow. He show us diagrams, depictions and information from other sources that are
really helpful.
I like seeing the slides of body tissues using the microscope. I think it's even more valuable when
the instructor projects the image from his microscope up onto a large screen and then explains
what we are looking at. |
| the lab =) |
| Trents examples were very helpful. He breaks down all the material and makes it easy to understand and grasp the concept. They were very helpful when reviewing the material for exams, quizzes, and homework assignments. He really knows his stuff. |
| I like the hand on activities |
| Hands on work in lab. |

8. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| I have no complaints. The course was well presented. |
| more activities in lab like hands on stuff |
| Better lab activities |
| Improvement of class could be more group work and class work. We also need more notes to take
home. |
| this course was fun |
| No improvements needed the class was very enjoyable and informative |
| None |
| I cannot think of ways that this course could improve. This course has done
excellent in teaching me and my fellow classmates. |
| More time in a lecture format. Less time doing Lab activities. |
| the tests required too much information to be retained |
| Nothing comes to mind. |
| students should do more activities during the lab |
| This class could be improved if we had a real cadaver in the class. Having skeletons are helpful but it doesn't help with actually picturing the body with the joints and muscle. |
| None, Trenton Niemi is doing a fine job. I would like to see him conduct the Zool courses in the
future. |
|
|
9. Other comments:
|
| he is a good lab teacher |
| Trenton really helped me understand all of the materials that Bruce had given us. I also thought that the notes Trenton gave us helped me get a better idea about what was going on in the chapter.Overall, I enjoyed his lab, and I would recommend his class to other students |
| Excellent job! Keep it up! |
| I really like Trent. He is a very good teacher and I feel really lucky to be in his lab group. Before the
beginning of the semester, students who had previously had him as a lab instructor told me they
really enjoyed his class. They said he is funny and a really good teacher and that they really liked the
class. I couldn't agree more. I will reccommend him to future students as well. |
| Trent is a very good and knowledgeable teacher. He is very helpful with answering all our questions and giving us an easier way of understanding the material. |
|
|
1. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| My lab experience was immensely helpful. Professor Niemi gives clear direction in his teaching and providing helpful visual aids and explanations. Much of the difficult material I learned from this course was in my lab, under Niemi's instruction. |
| He helped me understand such a difficult subject...and made it interesting! His sense of humor was appropriate and brought in attention from the class. His teaching skills are far above average and only wish he could teach more courses. Feel strongly that I learned a lot from him and enjoyed the subject overall. |
| Mr. Niemi explained the subject matter in way that made it easier to grasp and remember. A lot of use of visual aids and pneumonic devices helped to me to recall information and made it more fun to learn. I've taken this course before at another university and I believe I did better this time because of Mr. Niemi's teaching style. |
| Trent Niemei was an understanding teacher. Thank you for your help. |

8. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| It would be great to see Trenton have his own course. He is an excellent instructor. |
| Mr. Niemi could be teaching this course. |
| I wished that the lecture class was available through television. It was difficult to attend any lecture class due to the fact that I needed to work full time and trying to pursue a career.
Trent was a great teacher. =) |
|
|
9. Other comments:
|
| I have already suggested many of my friends take him for lab. I credit him for much of my understanding this semester. Very helpful and clear in his instructions. |
| He didn't write the exams so it's difficult to evaluate this aspect. |
|
|
1. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| how he explain the subject thoroughly |
| The way he teaches is awesome!!! Trent explains things so easily to
understand. He puts in scenarios we deal with in everyday life and makes the
learning experience enjoyable!! |
| Trent's review and discussion of pertinent information. Various hands on dissections. |
| doing labs |
| I really enjoy having Trent as my lab instructor. He is an excellent teacher and presents the course information in an easy to follow & easy to remember way. |
| Recorded lectures were a great resource to refer back to and watch on more than one occasion. |
| He could explain a lot of topics that were complicated, and made them easier
to understand. His lab was very helpful. |
| I think everything we learned through out the semester was valuable . The
way he explained things in class were very useful and helpful. He made it
easier for me to understand each chapter of Anatomy and Physiology. |
| The breakdown of the week's lectures in lab. Trent broke them down and took his time to explain the concept in different ways until we understood them. If we still didn't get it, he would work with us one on one, until we felt comfortable with what we learned. |
| lab |
| Trent has a good way of breaking down the physiology aspect of the class and making it understandable for me. He broke down tough concepts and explained them in different ways, making them easy to retain. He demonstrated lab procedures so I could mimic them. |

8. My overall evaluation of this course is...
|
| excellent |
| I like having Trent as a teacher. I wish that there was more labs like his. I
would be a straight A student if he were teaching all subjects! He's
awesome!! |
| Good class, as a student in this class you need lots of time and dedication to learn. |
| The course is challenging but interesting. |
| Course content will be useful as I enter the medical field. |
| It is a good addition to zoology 142. |
| Excellent! I enjoyed attending his class every Friday. I learned new facts
every week. |
| Excellent..... 150% |
| excellent |
| A+ I learned the most this semester. Anatomy and Physiology is a tough subject with alot of info, but we got through most of the basics. Definately a great class for a prenursing student. I feel prepared to start nursing school. |
|
|
9. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| no improvement needed |
| Longer times in lab. |
| I do wish I was able to receive all my quizzes back before exams, they are another resource to help study. The exams are hard because you have lots of questions on the practical and exam, its too much. |
| I would like to have more hands-on labs. Also, I feel that we move through the chapters rather quickly, considering the amount of information we are learning. |
| Exams were very difficult and covered such a breadth of material at a time that it was challenging
to retain information. It may be easier to process information if exams were administered more
frequently covering 2 chapters at a time.
Homework assignments were very helpful. |
| There is nothing I would change about this course. |
| For the lab section.... nothing, Trent is an amazing teacher. |
|
|
10. Other comments:
|
| I enjoy his class very much! I've learned alot from his class alone. I wish
that all of my classes were this full of enjoyment! He's a great teacher! |
| Lab was a great way to reiterate content learned throughout the week. |
| I would recommend Trent's class to my friends at school. He did an amazing
job teaching us, and he is the best lab instructor I've ever had. |
| I think it would be very beneficial if Bruce Butler could give us more of an idea of what will be on the exams. There is such an enormous amount of information to learn, it would be nice to be aware of which key things that really should focus on ahead of time, so that we all could do better on the Exams.! |
| great class |
|
|
1. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| I really appreciate the way he lectures, draws pictures and shows video. He has a very visual way of teaching, I like that a lot. I'm going to be sure and take his classes in any other courses I need to take. If you study and listen to his lectures, his tests are very fair. I tape his lectures and he tests on everything he lectures on. |
| I feel that Trenton Niemi was a very good lecturer. He made sure to point out all the things that he would be testing us on while conducting his lectures. Also, he used other materials available to him and personal experience to re-enforce the concepts that he felt would be important to us in his class, as well as others moving forward. It made it worthwhile to attend his lectures unlike some of the other instructors that just read the text to the class. |
| Mr. Niemi's way of equating complex bodily functions to relatable situations was very helpful. I also liked how he would repeat and clarify his description of the subject when necessary to make sure everyone understood. |
| The information was very interesting and helpful. The entire course is
valuable. |
| The aspects of the course that were most valuable were how he shows pictures and examples of
things he is explaining. |
| I enjoyed the learning aspect of the course, however, I may not have had the greatest test scores in
the class, but I continue to go over the subjects in my textbook at home until I have got it all
memorized. But I really enjoyed learning all these new things about the human body, and mr. Niemi
is a good teacher. |
| I love Instructor Niemi's class it has actually been my favorite. Niemi is extremely thorough and makes associations with the information he teaches, to help "us" better understand the logical concepts of biology. |
| The lectures and trentons way of explaining chapters in a way we all can relate and understand. |
| everything, i rreally enjoyed learning everything that we learned |
| The aspect that was most valuable for me was to see if I had what it takes to get through a class like this. I had decided a couple of months prior to starting this class that I wanted to go into pharmacology. I figured that if I developed an interest in the subject matter being taught in this class I was on the right track, if not then I'd better plan on a different occupation. |
| has a clear understanding of the subject. |
| The simple lectures and note-taking were simple and also very valuable. |
| The lectures. The instructor explained the details of the course material in a way that I could easily
grasp. The instructor also drew upon real-life examples to explain complicated processes. The
instructor effectively used visual aids and interesting stories to illuminate the details of the course
material. The course also geared me up for future studies and turned me on to the idea of taking an
anatomy course next semester. |
| It being a lecture course, made it easier to understand and remember the information. |
| Visual Aids. |
| The slide shows that were shown that broke down each chapter |

8. My overall evaluation of this course is...
|
| Great teacher. Wish he taught Anatomy. |
| that it was very informative and well organized. I would grade this course an A. |
| Mr. Niemi's lectures were clear and precise, but very fast and compacted; I often felt as if too much was being covered in too short a time, which is more the fault of the course structure than the instructor. A lot of subject matter is dealt with per class, and only so much can be truly retained. I had difficulties taking decent notes because of how quick the class moved along and how vast the topics were. There also wasn't much encouragement or reason given to read the text, either in the syllabus or by the instructor. Overall I think it would be better served split into two semesters. |
| Great class. |
| This course is very hard but in order to pass, you really need to pay attention and work hard in the
class. |
| It's a great opportunity to learn about the human body and how it works. If one is to go into physics
or nursing or anything in that area of study, this class is the one. |
| Excellent!! I have recommended a few friends to take his Bio 100 course to receive a thorough understanding of Human Biology. |
| Well organized, time well spent. |
| awsome |
| I found this course to be very interesting. I really enjoyed learning how the human body works. Trenton is obviously very knowledgeable in this field and did an excellent job teaching the course. I am now very excited to take anatomy and physiology. |
| great teaching :) |
| Very interesting course. Really admired that there was not much homework, instead you can just
study all your notes and your textbook. |
| Excellent, 10 out of 10. I would recommend the course and the instructor to anyone looking to
study human biology. |
| This course had a lot of information to take in, but Mr. Niemi made it easy to understand. |
| I have enjoyed his class, thus far, and have learned quite a bit more than I thought I would. He uses visual aids, lectures and adds interesting facts about the subject being discussed. I like his sense of humor! |
| Very insightful. Trenton Niemi is very passionate about instructing his class
in a way in which curriculum could be learned and easily retainable. |
| He was a good teacher although I would've either liked more homework (shock!) on the chapters to I
could have a better understanding of the material. |
|
|
9. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| The projector broke several times. Maybe a back up location if the projector breaks. |
| I wasn't a really big fan of the text book in the binder. This should be looked into. |
| I think more homework would have helped substantially. What little there was greatly helped me to grasp the subject at hand, and I think one per week rather than one per test would have allowed me to keep up and better understand the topic. |
| |It would have been very helpful if the power points used in lectures were
available on Laulima. |
| This course doesn't really need improvement. The only thing is that he should do more reviews of
the chapters before the quizes and tests. He should also do fun activities to make the class active
and participate. An activity that would be very fun in order to get information into our heads for the
tests and quizes. |
| Well, everything depends on the individual. For me, I loved it because I really was able to benefit
from it, but for others, it may be a little harder to capture it, or it may be easier. But if I were to take
this course again, which I hope I don't despite how good this class is, I would expect more from
myself, if anything. |
| N/A |
| This course could be improved with more activities related to the subject at hand. A little more
visual perspective. |
| nothing its a legit bio 100 class |
| you should have worksheets to have so that students will know what they learned in class, maybe workbooks? |
| could improve by giving activities to the students to see if the students are in tract with the
discussed lesson. Assign more homework's. |
| Improvement would come from more physical and visual aids, not just pictures taken form the text
book. |
| Perhaps a couple of homework assignments that required an in-depth study of a particular aspect
of human biology could improve the course. The instructor gave many great real-life examples, yet
I would like to see even more real-life stories about human biology throughout the study of the
course material. |
| I can not think of any ways that this course could be improved. |
| Believe it or not, I would have liked a little more homework to solidify the lectures. Personally, I learn subjects easier by visual, hands-on, and interaction between student-teacher. |
| The course text did not explain into enough detail some of it's material.
Technical problems postponed or lengthened lectures. |
| More assignments on each chapter so the student has a better understanding of this course. |
|
|
10. Other comments:
|
| Loved learning this subject and am grateful I had an enthusiastic teacher. |
| I learned a lot in this class and I believe that the main reason for that is Trenton Niemi. I would recommend any course that he is teaching to other students. |
| Mr. Niemi is a very good lecturer and clearly knows what he's talking about, but I think this course needs work to make it clearer and more palpable for students. |
| More use of Laulima would have been helpful. |
| no comments. |
| I just want to say thank you to mr. Niemi for his services and that he should keep up the good work. |
| Trenton Niemi is an awesome teacher, I can tell he loves teaching and he loves his students and he
wants all us to learn and succeed. |
| Great Job ! :) |
| Very friendly and humorous teacher, he 'wants' you to learn the material. |
| In the beginning of the semester I was looking to add Biology 100: Human Biology, but all the
courses were full. So I went for two weeks to three different courses before settling into Professor
Niemi's course. I decided to take his course because he taught the course with what I felt was the
firmest understanding of the subject matter and he was the most articulate in the way he explained
the course material. The Instructor's passion for the subject is tangible, and he is able to expertly
field and answer any question brought his way by the students. I did not plan to continue my
college studies after this semester, but because of the high quality of instruction in Professor
Niemi's course, and because I learned so much, I signed up for Anatomy next semester.
The Professor also has a good sense of humor, which helps make the class fun, and he is
approachable and kind in the way he treats us as students. |
| I hope you let him keep this position. He made Biology more interesting than I thought it would (initially) be and, as a result, I learned quite a bit! |
| Great job Pro. Niemi. Hope you consider teaching other courses. |
| You are a great teacher! |
|
|
1. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| Trentons support of the lecture and text, with fresh energy and the interest to answer questions until we ALL understood. He focused on what was most difficult to undersand and what was most important. |
| Trent was an amazing teacher. Our lecture classes were sometimes tough to follow and understand so Trent would always take the time and re-teach and break it down for our lab in a simpler way for us to understand. He was awesome!!! |
| The understanding of complex anatomical and physiological concepts and its connection to human life. |
| Trenton Niemi was an excellent instructor that showed much enthusiasm for both the material and the students. His lab lectures were very engaging and helped tremendously in grasping new concepts and ideas. |
| Trent's clear, concise, and in depth explanations. |
| I absolutely enjoyed the lectures Trent is able to offer. I learn more from
lab lectures as oppose to the main lectures in the morning due to the way
Trent takes difficult subjects step by step in a way that I can't clearly
comprehend what's going on during muscle activity and etc. |
| He has a way of making sure you understand every point he is teaching. He is a great teacher and I hope to have him as my lab teacher again. He does not make you feel uncomfortable when asking questions and will explain it in different ways until you get it. It was a pleasure to be in his lab. |
| Lab lectures and review session really helped us understand key concepts and know what was expected of us to learn. I wish that he would of been my lecture instructor as well. His teaching style is very enganging and it is enjoyable to be in his class and have as teacher I can't wait till next semester. |

8. My overall evaluation of this course is...
|
| It was a great supporting class.Without it the course would have been even harder! |
| He did a fantastic job! Would definitely want him as a full time professor. He has an amazing way to get through to the class and have us grasp the concepts of A and P. |
| Excellent. |
| My overall evaluation of this course has to be divided into two separate reports since I had C. Hornick for lecture and T. Niemi for lab.
Conrad Hornick is clearly a knowledgeable instructor and it's quite obvious that he has much experience in his field. He seems to be a good guy with a good sense of humor most of the time. However, I must say that his overall teaching performance fell short. He was not engaged with his students much at all. In fact, his demeanor would indicate that his teaching position at a community college was beneath him. Typically, he would show up for lecture right as it was suppose to start and would be out the door immediately following. He NEVER replied to a single email that was sent to him throughout the semester. He was was very random (time wise)in how he would post homework assignments. His quizzes were always in different formats from week to week so you really didn't know how to study for them (since a tests format really dictates how you need to study). Lectures were always a long, powerpoint presentation that were obscure and really difficult to follow at times. Lastly, throughout most of the semester, I, and most of the other students, were all scratching our heads trying to figure out what information or concepts we needed to learn. Most of the time, when students would ask what we needed to know for the test he would say, "the important stuff". Sometimes we would ask if we needed to know xyz, and he would often respond probably not but I'm not sure yet. Hmmmmm. Very vague.
On the other hand, Trenton Niemi was a very engaging instructor. He was always at the chalkboard walking us through all the difficult concepts of each chapter. Not only did he present the material in way that really clarified difficult concepts, he also made learning it fun. I would go out on a limb and say that I wouldn't have done as well in the course if I hadn't had Trent Niemi as my lab instuctor. |
| Extremely valuable, I sincerely hope I get Trent's lab next semester. He goes above and beyond reasonable expectations, taking a personal vested interest in the advancement of our understanding. |
| Being able to attend morning lectures and Trent's lab lectures, I found a
greater understanding in lab. He connects with the students and ensures we
understand every aspect of the material being taught before moving on. There
is no scrutiny of any sort of question being asked because he takes a broaden
approach in making sure everything is thoroughly comprehensible with material
that is otherwise difficult to understand. This course was a must have that
improved my understand in zoology. |
| Trent is an invaluable teacher. He knows his stuff and makes sure you do to. I enjoy how he makes things come alive where it sticks in my brain. |
| The lab is much better than the lecture part of this course soley because Trenton Niemi is the instructor. |
| it was interesting. trent made it very easy to understand the material |
|
|
9. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| More actual expieriments for hands on associations wiyh the concepts. |
| He can be both lecturer and lab instructor. I would like to recommend him both of these positions so that he can really follow up what he did say in the lecture during the lab period. This is absolutely a benefit for us students too. |
| For the Conrad Hornick
1. Please ditch the long, boring, powerpoint presentations and pick up the chalk. There is room for some powerpointing but please, for difficult concepts the powerpoint simply does not work.
2. Respond to your email PLEASE!!!
3. Either keep your quizzes in the same format each week or let the students know ahead of time what format the following weeks quiz will be in (multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank (with word bank/without work bank),matching, labeling, etc..) |
| Let Trent write the quizzes |
| I saw no room for improvement to be honest. I just wished I could have the
lab stretched out longer or be able to replace my zoology morning lecture. |
| I dont see how it could improve except have trent do the lechtures to. |
| mr hornick could explain the material better. it knows his material too well that i think he expects
his students to know it as well as he does. |

| Trenton did a great job with what he had to work with ,his expieriance and knowledge, and pure enthusiasm for the subject made learning concepts from him more compfortable to swallow.UH made a good choice with Trenton.I wish the department had more$$$$ so we could do more HANDS ON,with such an intricate subject it would help support concepts.I look forward to taking more classes from Trenton. He also made himself available to students outside of class, which was nice. |
| He can be a good lecturer too. Very accomodating. He makes complex things simple for us to understand which we don't harvest during the lecture. An enthusiastic guy with so much wisdom and energy to share.
Thanks Trent... |
| I feel that Conrad Hornick is a very knowledgeable instructor and really think that with a little tweaking could be a great instuctor (ie. presentation, attitude, and engagement with students).
Trenton Niemi is an excellent instructor and I am looking forward to taking ZOOL 142 Lab with him. He is very engaging, excellent at teaching difficult concepts, and makes learning fun. It's too bad he isn't teaching more classes. I would highly reccommend his class to fellow students or friends. Two thumbs up!!! |
| electric gradients are not really electrical but charge based. Similar but not the same. The scientific community should consider using a more accurate wording. |
| I love this class. Without it, I'll be totally lost with the material I'm
trying to understand. |

|
| I don't think this course need improvement |
| The "lab" was pretty weak. I really appreciated the extra lecture time and explanation so I want to be careful not to discredit that aspect, but as far as a lab where we explore hands-on examples of what the books tell us, it was kinda lame. |
