1. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The networking with the guest speakers. They broadened my knowledge of possible jobs in Hawaiian biology. Gave me inspiration to stay in school.
Field trips are hands-on, fun, and very interesting.
the teachers knowledge and his diversity of his background at such a young age (like me =)
The field trips, the assignments, and the guest speakers.
I really enjoyed the field trips because we were able to see what the biology was really like in the field and learn hands-on.
Field trips - gave us first hand knowledge of aspects of Hawaiian biology and conservation methods Guest lecturers - kept it interesting
I loved the outdoor field, they're really fun! They made this class one of the most unique and exciting I've taken at UH.
Vale aspects where our field trips we went on. These trips made the class very memorable. It was a great experience doing volunteer work. this class is a valuable class, we had numerous guest speakers that took the time out to talk to our class. Mr. Aruch is great
the field trips
The hands on learning field trips. The teacher was young and very easy to connect with. the course subject was pertinent to my life and was more interesting to me to learn. Class lectures was also fun, never boring. felt comfortable to ask silly questions but sam never made me feel incompetent. It was always a casual learning environment.
Everything. Just gaining the knowledge of Hawaii and invasive species are very useful and makes one aware of the situation.
The trips were really related to the book and I really enoyed going out and finding new things to do. Really fun part.
It was all very valuable and very informative.
There were several. Going out into the field and seeing first hand, things like our watersheds, how they are impacted by humans using the water, and seeing with our eyes, how invasive species take over, restoration projects can be a success if they are planned properly and have good intentions. All of the guest speakers along with our teacher, seem to be extremely knowledgeable and passionate about this subject. Helps to get others interested and start to care as well.
The field trips, the guest speakers, the power points.
Field trips, hiking and guest speakers.
The hands on experience and teaching that happened out of doors, in the places we were studying about.

8. My overall evaluation of this course is...
We shouldve hiked as a group to learn new things, most field trips were like an individual hike and felt like a waste of my saturday.
Professor Aruch is a wonderful instructor. In teaching what he know about bird, watersheds, invasive plant, etc...
4 out of 5... It's a good class overall and the information gained is a plus. I struggled along the way, but I expected it.. Sam's a great teacher with lots to share...
Overall the course enhanced my understanding of the environment of the Hawaiian islands. Sam is enthusiastic about the material and brought in some awesome guest speakers.
Fun and I learned a lot about the environment and native species in Hawai`i.
Great! Class was a lot of fun. Teacher made learning the subject matter fun. Teacher was very knowledgeable of subject matter. I feel I learned a lot.
Excellent! I would highly recommend this class for active students seeking to learn more about Maui and conversation.
I recommend this class. i enjoyed our class requirements
Really the BEST class I have EVER taken at MCC. FUN, INVITING, CASUAL, HANDS ON, INSPIRING sums my description of sam's class. other students will love him as a teacher as he is well educated in his course of study.
I would recommend this class to anyone that asked. It is a great class to take and the field trips are a great source of information that we learned in class.
All though this was a great hand on experience class. I felt that when I asked questions some times it was not answered or he had a sarcastic nature to me as if I should already know about the topic.
AWESOME class! I really enjoyed the field trips and loved learning whats in my own back yard.
Awesome! I loved being able to go out in the field and see what we are learning about in the classroom.
Great teacher, nice, funny, bright, passionate about what he does.
Great & will definitely recommend.
I'm glad that I decided to take this course over another in the same area, and glad to have taken it in general. And I can't say that for many of my other classes that I've taken at MCC. Most other courses info seem outdated and irrelevant. What I enjoyed most about this course is it's relevancy to everyday life, and how its subject matter directly impacted my life. As a class, we were able to hear a variety of working professionals speak from their field and point of view on the current status of things (on their subject). In conclusion, The University of Hawaii, and others for that matter, would benefit their students and enlighten the process of education if they were to take an example from the methods practiced in this class, Bio 105, lead by Sam Auruch.
9. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
It could be offered during the day time so we can get outside. or instead of hiking have the field trips visit restoration projects, visit interesting jobs.
Not many students are technologically updated, so not everything should be run online.. and the state or government shouldne expect everyone to be up at this standard to completely know how to use these computerized programs..
The only improvement would be a variety of more in-class activity and less power point presentations. It is important to relay the information in ways other than through a screen.
More organization. I suggest having a list of the field trip dates and locations at the beginning of the class and also make clear that they are a big chunk of the student's overall grade. That way students know they must attend a majority, if not all, Saturday field trips.
Assignments graded more quickly. Even more hands on conservation work.
I didn't like how the outdoor field trips were so early in the morning. I took a night class for convince. Getting (at most) 4 hours of sleep and waking up before the sunrise was dreadful!!
a better source of transportation. a van or transportation vehicle provided by the campus would be a great resource to future participants in this class .
less lectures
give a phone contact, so that we can message him by text so he'll be more accessible rather solely by email for those who don't have smartphones with internet.

There should not be a no whining rule because some questions i felt he said i was winning when it was just a question.. It was really hurtful when I felt like I needed to learn more and seemed like i got shot down.. The teacher should have a better understanding that some hikes or trips might be too strenuous because of older or health related issues and should be more open to a different trip. Also the teacher should realize that not all students are a pro in biology for it was my first time and I felt that he had hoped that I already new alot of stuff on the topics, should teach students as if it their very first time.
I think this course can be improved by incorporating more culturally teachings. Maybe get some cultural specialists to come and talk about the Hawaiian perspective on conservation.
More extra, super bonus points. More volunteering opportunities. Every field trip should be some sort of service project. It was fun to get our hands dirty. More games to play, like the bird eating the beans game.
more field trips less lecture.

Bio 105 was coordinated in a well thought out manner, and I felt each class added to my understanding on the subject. What could be improved: -Better examples and descriptions of 'processes'/concepts learned during lectures -Key points of lectures highlighted more clearly/descriptively (without getting dry, or boring) -More physical examples/ hands on activities during lecture (involving sample plants, erupting volcanoes, for e.g) Also, assignments weren't too strict and I thought were good; having them every week was fine with at least a break or two to help keep up... All the rest seems okay...

I may have failed this class, but it truly was an awesome experience, and I'm glad I took it, because as long as I walk out with more knowledge then it's all good! Great Job Sam!
I felt like I already knew a lot about Hawai`i's biology and native species but I learned so much more in this class. The field trips really helped because I gained a better understanding while being outside in the field and actually being able to SEE what we were learning about. I also appreciated the fact that Sam was very passionate about the topics he was teaching.
Thanks! What about Hawaiian Bio 205?
Although demanding, this had been one of my favorite classes at UH:M.
great instructor. class is always fun. The many guest speakers were very knowledgeable. Videos enhanced the learning of materials, awesome.
Over all the class was great and although he was a new teacher he really hit the topics well and brought in great guest speakers that work in the field of the topic.. Great Job..
Mahalo nui!
Thanks. I had fun in this class and I feel that I learned a lot too. It has opened my eyes and given me a new appreciation for this place that I call home.

There should be more classes at MCC like this one. (even if the subject is not biology related) This one meaning, a class that doesn't take a systematic approach to learning and that involves relative examples and learning practices.

8. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I enjoyed the course.
It was a good class to take and I learned a lot more about the envirment.
Great course.
This class was fun, professor taught a fun class and it wasnt as stressful.
I enjoyed this course because it was different from a regular classroom environment.
9. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
It could be a little more organized, but overall it was a good class.
I would like to work in the different environments with a more hands-on approach.
The field trips were very successful, perhaps even more of them would be possible.
I think this class would be better with more lab stuff, we had a binder full of stuff and didnt do much of it.
