9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
i empathize with the university's need to ever improve the standard of education, however, the writer believes that these surveys and evaluations of the instructor by the students has a profound influence both positive and negative. i will dispense with the positive. on the other side of the coin, these surveys also leaves the instructor vulnerable to a biased criticism with no merit too. furthermore, it causes, not on every occasion, but a storm in a tea cup, sort of speak. every instructor wants a merit and a good review, so it is their benefit to first strike a harmonious cord with every student deserving or not. there-in lies the problem.
Harvey, should give a test by every four chapters lol.

The class was very well thought out and included to dismiss the elusive integrity of how under-rated art is considered in a university setting, as most people would think less of its content and practicality, in essence to its unpopular belief, art in itself, is the staple to consume the possibility of finding the unknown which exist in the mind. A place to find the end, a place to start again.
Spend alittle more time on drawing in class.
Less reading material from the book in class. More discussion about material for better understanding.
I cannot think of anything, he has a really fun way of teaching, very personable and understanding to the students. Very refreshing.
there is nothing he needs to improve on.

10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
this was my first semester and i sincerely enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere together with the helpful and friendly staffs of the uh. the instructor was passionate.
The aspects of the course I liked the best was lecturing and drawing.
Drawing lol.
I enjoyed the daily art assignments that were assigned.
The writing of many artist and how they voiced their opinions about their work. Preferably, modern artist who reside on Maui. Early European artist set the standard a little to high for modern design however, as technology proves to trace its photographic memory.....we live with the alternative of technological help.
The drawing was something different and I enjoyed that.
I learned how to draw two-point persepective.
Learning the elements of design, course projects, discussions were fun.
how he applies everything in the book to the drawings we do in class
getting to draw and learning about different artist and art types back then
11. My overall evaluation of this course is...
excellent
My overall evluation of this course is i learned a lot more about art. This course helped me learn more about art and the artists. I also learned how to draw more nicer.
Cool, Calm, and Collective!
It could be better!!
Very high, on a scale of 1 to 10........10
Casual and imformative

Really fun and great.Professor Reed is unique in his style of teaching which immediately puts students at ease and engages us in discussions to learn.
overall evaluation of this course is a great learning experience into the art world.

12. Other comments:
My overall is I wish I could take this course again, it was exciting, fun, and of course a cool teacher!
I would certainly take the next course....to advance in the study of art. Drawings of Ancient Hawaiian Mythology has encouraged a new thesis to pursue. Based on theory and the notes of Leonardo Da Vinci, I believe this is the path of my future.
Great Class.

Thank you for making this fun!

9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
More in-class discussions would be great.
He should organize his class so that he doesnt repeat the same material over and over again because i feel that it is a waste of time to sit through a lecture i already had.
the art class was geared toward older art styles, wish their had been more modern art disscuions, not one day geared to animated art, would have been nice to see a few shorts or animated sketches, or claymation
i fell that harvey read is one of the most impressive art teachers here at the campus and that he will do good to the many years to come
none
Mr.Reed needs to be more organized and prepared for his classes.
Can't really think of anything right now as to how he can improve the teaching of this course. He knows his stuff!

better strucutre
Set up a lesson plan. tell students what will be seen on tests and quizes. set up class schedules.
Some explanations could be given clearer, although I felt it might just have been "the nature of the beast." The lectures on the Artform book were a bit dry, but the book itself was interesting. Maybe lectures that focus more on Art using images from books other than the text book, personal photos, or gathered online and using those images to employ the terms used in Artforms and also to engage the class in viewing Art.
he can improved his teaching by giving a homework and by teaching a clear explanation on each chapter of the lesson and by teacher each student how to draw.
I honestly feel that he did a great job!
He didnt present things in a very organized manner, seemed to be all over the place.

10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The movies and the pictures of various art works and monuments in other countries.
I liked the drawing parts the best. Like when we would sketch. Also when he would show us his photographs from places he traveled to.
that he introduced all aspects of what could be concidered art
All his showings and enthusiasim of his art in his world travels.
i like that in the book we got the chance to talk about the many forms of art and how it is showed not only in the form of paintings but sketches but in real live views that you can see everyday
video about arts and artists.
The drawing
I like the personal experiences he has shared with the class, he explains it as if you were right there with him.
learning the history of art.
I liked the sketch book, final art project, and the MACC field trip.
We would incorporate the material of what we were learning to actually drawing out the principles learned into our sketch pads. So you would get a sense of what you were learning to see how it actually applies.
learning about styles.
I enjoyed the course material and projects. Professor Reed shared his enthusiasm for the subject in a low pressure way that encouraged me to engage in the world of Art. Being someone very out of their element in the class, this quality was very important and made the class as interesting as it was.
for me, i like the most when we are drawing.
I really enjoyed sketching different things every week! It was a little challeging, but I loved it!
allowence to be creative and not judged for lack of artistic capabilities
11. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Pretty good for learning art 101.
It was a good course.
very good course, had fun, and learned.
101% EXCELLENT!
very good!
valuable course.
This class was very frustrating and annoying. Mr.Reed is not an organized person and does not make put forth a lot of effort to reach his student on a personal level.
Love it, although I have been slacking over the last few weeks. There are things going on my personal life that has taken me away from the work that this class gives me.
its good
Could use a lot of improvement.
I think Mr. Harvey Reed is a true master Artist. He teaches you how to learn about the art and its philosophy. The only down side was, organization and his dry style of speaking. I believe those are the only shortcomings I see with this course.
Was a thoroughly enjoyable course. I like Harvey and his enthusiasm for the course and teaching Art was infectious.
he is a great teacher..
Taking this class makes me want to change my major. The reason for that is because I found a hidden talent!
i think the professor is good
the students were disrespectful to our teacher, laughing about him during lectures and such. I feel that if he came across with more authority and confidence, the whole class would benefit
12. Other comments:
I think the course was ok. Kind of on the boring side.
good course.

He is an excellent Professor. Would love to retake his class next semester.
He's funny and also a fun instructor...

9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
-- snipped --
The Friday meeting time was inconvinent. The Tuesday meeting time was also inconvenent. The class should be geared toward beginning photography as most of the class had no concept of the basics. A six hour course garnering only 3 credits should be adjusted to at least a 4 credit course.
Being more organized. Having a set schedule to follow, for example a course calender of events that are going to take place would be nice. To have an idea of what is going to happen next when the semester starts will allow the students to look forward and get some ideas beforehand on what to photograph and get enthusiastic about. Have set due dates for portfolios. Have a rubric for final presentation. The research for this presentation was a bit stressful, because there wasn't really anything to follow that will give us an idea as to what is "A" material and what isn't.
More in class activities. The lectures were good, but there's only so much lectures can teach you about photography.
Be more organized and make class more interesting
to have an outline of the semester and follow it
For me, i think the course would be better if he would change the time slots for his class

10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Field trips where we got to take pictures as a class. I learned the most about photography by doing it with others. Also, I enjoyed our critiques, because it gave us insight into what we need to improve while learning form other peoples failures and successes.
Field trips.
Going outdoors for some classes. I learned so much! It was great to apply the theories we learned inclass to on field photo shoots. I also enjoyed sharing my work with my peers and giving fed back.
Going on field trips to take photographs for certain projects!
outside photography and photoshop
fieldtrip
11. My overall evaluation of this course is...

A good basic photography class. Not to strong in the technical digital aspect.
on a scale of 1 to 10, 5.
Great! I've recommended it to friends.
It was fun going on field trips and exploring different areas to take photographs and learning different ways to shoot photographs.
to long didnt need to be 3 hours long
great experience

12. Other comments:
I strongly believe this course would have been more enjoyable if there were a schedule to follow, because throughout the course, I found myself wondering if I should attend Friday classes because I knew I had to work and with some trips going as far as Kula, was a bummer since I couldn't go. I also couldn't get the attendance point because I knew I couldn't make it back, in order to be on time for work. Yeah, I also can't agree with the classes time on Fridays, maybe if it was a morning class or a little bit earlier on Fridays I would've been able to make more classes instead of having to sit out. I really did learn a bit about photography, but there was some times I felt discouraged because I didn't have an SLR like most of the other students in the class. There would be a lecture going on and I wouldn't know what the discussion was about.
Some students don't seem to be dedicated. We had a few students lose interest and stop showing up. It's unfortunate because many people we're wanting to take this class, but couldn't because it was full.
I think the time for this course definetly has to change because on Tuesdays 6pm-9pm is a bit late and students are so drained out from afternoon and morning classes. Also classes on Friday 130-430, I think should be changed to earlier morning.

9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
-- snipped --
Going over what will be on tests with more detail and more frequently.
I liked it when people in the class were talking with eachother, discussing art with the teacher. More of this!
i think it's more of a student's responsibility to keep up with the reding material that's available. otherwise, Mr. Reed is a great teacher! I genuinlly enjoyed he class.
I believe that he should be more interested in what the students like and not just on his own opinions. I would suggest more hands on art work then so much focus on the text.
If he focuses more in quizes especially for people which this class is just an extra credit class, maybe he should structure more the material concerning the questions for quizes or maybe give us 2 or 3 small quized during the semester from the chapter we study at that particular time.I have math and zoology i have absolutely to take an A in order to be accepted at radiology school in Oahu, i do not have time enough(although i wish)to prepare for a final exam from the whole book. Its alot to memorize there and again, i dont have hours enough in the day to prepare for all classes ( i have 5), pass final on the whole material and get an A.So, because i might get a B in his class i will not be able to get accepted in KCC for the radiology cause they want students with straight A's( its what they told me) so i have to retake this class. I think for people who just need extra credit and not a major in art should be a sort of accomodation. The class was presenting very interesting material, i enjoyed all the information i got, but unfortunatelly didnt have time to study for the final test which was 40 question.I would read the book again in my vacation because i found very usefull information for my general culture but it will not help me in my future career.
spend more time explaning some directions and listen to his students more.
Doing a lot more art rather than reading
I think Harvey Reed can improve his course a little more by being more enthusiastic about his subject. Yes i can see the love he has for art but he doesn't make the class exciting. So it makes me think learning about art is boring.

10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
when movies and slides were shown about art in diffrent countries. I also liked doing the hands on work.

Learning how to draw with point perspectives.
Harvey was a really great teacher. I liked the art he showed us in class, and I liked making my own art. He was nice and did not disrespect anyone. I like nice people!
the course was very interesting learning material and it was my favorite, fun class to take, and I will continue to pursue art further in the future. Music and art are two things that I love and Mr.Reed was a great teacher. Art 101, MR.REED, is very articulate, socially connected, humble, knowledgable of various countries and cultures, mindful of the world of art and introducing us to art. High-10 mr.reed is an awesome techer to have. Being in his class has been a pleasure to be a part of, and I enjoed my time while learnng about art. It was my favorite class I looked forward to attending to, and.I will miss it. I've developed a greater love for art and for other cultures, and it's one subject I would like to continue to pursue. Thank you, Mr.Reed.
Sketching
Drawing and paiting, it was very calming
the drawing
The interesting documentaries
What i liked best was the art drawings we would do in our sketch books. It helped us learn many different styles of art and how to draw certain things. I really liked when we had live models pose and we had to draw them out.
The practical application of the subjects like drawing. The films. The material from his personal collection that Mr. Reed presented. Encouragement to present in front of the other students our own research and works. Motivation to work in our visual projects. Professor Reed answer my questions clearly and an easy way to understand.

11. My overall evaluation of this course is...
sometimes 3 hours is a little too long.

It was ok. Sometimes fun, sometimes more stressful than nessisary.
I am grateful to have taken this class. I hope to take more classes from Harvey.
It's great! I've already reccomended it to my friends & family.
ok with much improvement needed
B, the teacher is very knowlegeable but was a waist of time for my career because 3 hours is a long time to seat into a class and whatch videos when i have hundredts of pages to memorize in anatomy
it was fun at times but not so fun watching slide shows.
it was overall a good class but I wish we could have done more art
My overall evaluation of this art course is it was very informative. Harvey knew what he was talking about and taught us everything he knew. Although the class could sometimes be very draggy, his passion for this subject made up for it. He taught us very well.
B+
The course was fantastic. Fulfill the objective to introduce me to the visual arts in an academic way. The concepts were presented in a clear, concise manner, never was dull or boring.
That it was very helpful.
Needs to be at a faster and more uplifting, enthusiastic pace. Get students more involved in art - field trips, class discussions, looking at paintings (not just on films). Allow students to sketch what they like and not assign perspective drawings, etc that some may have difficulty doing. Students should be able to receive something back with a grade on it for presentations and projects so they know how they are doing in the class. He never gave grades so how are we supposed to know our status? He said we needed to see him before or after class to receive grade but that is difficult when some students are racing to class as it is because of work, and by 8:30p.m. want to leave ASAP.
