21. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Class time was used to separate into groups and peer review outlines. He would go around to each group and check on people's outlines to see if they were on the right track. If they weren't he would give suggestions to make the speech better. Also, he said we could e-mail our outlines to him if we wanted feedback, or schedule an appointment.
He lets them know how to give a speech easier and encourages you that what you did was a very difficult thing to do.
When he grades the class on our speeches he allows for time to critique others but in a helpful non-threatening manner. He also writes helpful tips on the back of our grading sheets.
not too well. Mr Carlson lacked the communications skills required to get a good grade in his class. he did not review the grade sheet for the speeches that were handed out. I personnel feel that i should have dropped his class in efforts to get a better teacher.
Gordon showed his concern by emailing students back. He asked if we had any questions.
No he didn't. He was just in class to teach and if you got it good if not you would have to email him but not all students have computers.
By letting them say how they felt they did on the speeches and then helping with what they need.
Professor Carlson took time to explain things and make sure that he was understood by all. He didnt mind giving special attention to one student at a time to make sure they got the help they needed but made sure that he didnt ignore the rest of the class in the process.
He always asks questions and encouraged us to speak up if we did not understand anything.
He encourages students to ask questions and tries to correct students if they are doing something wrong.
He gave us specific feedback on our speeches so we could improve. He also would give further suggestions for improving our performance if asked.
He always asks if we have any questions or concerns before and after class.

He always made sure the class understood the material by asking multiple times throughout the lecture if we understood. He was always available either during his office hours or through e-mail if we needed feedback on our speech outlines.
I am not entirely sure. He was very attentive and interested and understanding when people came to him about something but since I never really sought any type of assistance outside of class I am not really sure how I would answer this question.
He clearly answered all of the questions given and he showed anyone who asked how to improve what we already had.

He always made sure that all of us understood what he was teaching. If he saw that it looked like we were confused, he would make sure to ask us if we understood him before continuing on.
He made sure to give us as many exanples, until we understand what he was talking about. He make it easy to ask him question.

22. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I feel that he prepared us for each speech pretty well. He went over the structure and what he expected from us so that we would all have an equal chance of getting a good grade. He tried to make it interesting and fun.
He's very direct and gets to the point on what you need to know. He provides good examples.
I liked the everyday examples on the current topics he use to relate our speeches to. It wasn't boring.
disliked how he didn't go over the grade sheet. i felt that he was unapproachable for things that i needed help on.
Gordon has a good sense of humor during his lectures. He is another witty professor that I found some of his jokes to be funny. I dislike his grading because its all based on speech but I liked not having homework because it allowed me to catch up with other classes.
Was told to buy textbook for sp151 but never used it once for class! What a waste of money and time!!
I really liked how casual the learning environment was but to me the grading system was very harsh.
He seemed to be a bit of a perfectionist in his grading. I think if he graded more to our personal abilities and improvement rather than his own standards it would seem more fair.
I like the fact that Gordon teaches methodically. Everything seemed to follow. Whenever he wrote on the blackboard, his notes were simple and in point form, and that seemed to work well for me.
I like how he gives students examples and demonstrates what he wants us to do.
He is an engaging speaker. Perhaps this is expected of a public speaking teacher, but nonetheless he was. I appreciated the very specific criticism. I also liked that he gave us the grade sheets for our speeches at the very beginning of the semester.
I love the humor he puts into his teaching. It makes the material easier to understand.
He was really engaged with the class during lectures, forcing you to pay attention. He used great examples when describing different parts of the speech. He is a great speaker; you can tell he is passionate about his subject.
I really liked how he made this course very fun and interesting. He made coming to class enjoyable. He is a VERY good teacher and easy to understand and appreciate. He is also very funny which made the class entertaining as well as instructive.
He's funny and gets straight to the point. The workload was nice too.
I liked that he actually took pleasure in seeing students improve each week in thier speeches.
He explains the coarse material very clearly, lets the students know what is the most important to focus on.
Even though I knew that the speeches were serious, he didn't put too much pressure on us. His class had a very relax feeling when it came to speaking and I really liked that because in high school I didn't ever feel that in my speech class.
I like the way he teaches. His exanples are funny and vary helpful
I like that he's into his subject and makes us want to get into it. His course not only draws you into wanting to speak better publicly but he also has a way of talking to where you just want to keep listening and learning.
It was a tough class but i learned a lot about the formatting and structure of a speech.

23. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
I feel he is an overall good teacher. He explains the speeches and guidelines pretty well so we know what to expect. He also tries to engage students in his presentations so that it is interactive.
He's like the nerdy guy who can stand up to bullies and tell them intelligently that what they are doing is pointless. He reminds me of the guy who played in the movie "wanted" opposite Angelina Jolie, except he has blond hair.
He should chamge his syllabus to include attendance in it b/c he says oh well thoes who didn't come to class will get bad grade even if assignments were done on time. That's sneaky and shouldn't count b/c its not in syllabus on what you are graded on!
I loved all the examples for speeches. Iʻll never forget the unicorns and cats!
He needs to explain how he will grade the speeches better. It was very confusing.
I really enjoyed learning under him and loved his dry, sarcastic humor that he incorporated into his lectures to make them more entertaining and believable.
I loved the class, Gordan's way of explaining it just seemed well thought out.
He knows what heʻs talking about and wants the whole class to be involved in his discussions.
I really took this course because it was a requirement for my AA - and I wasn't expecting to enjoy it at all. I have to say, now at the end of the semester, that the class was one of the most enjoyable I took all semester. It was a fun lecture to sit through, and I felt I learned a lot about speech and speaking in front of an audience. I plan on taking an advanced public speaking course next fall.
I do think that he is a very good teacher and very passionate and knowledgable about the subject. I really enjoyed this class and I think that he will continue to be an amazing teacher. I do not want to say that he grades too harshly when he does clearly explain what is expected in the class and the entire grading procedure. However, it would be helpful if there were more extra credit opportunities or perhaps other ways that a student who is not a great public speaker could improve their grade. Although I have not received my final grade yet so I really cannot truly comment on his grading techniques. I have attended and participated in every class, as well as doing all of the required work, and yet I am still unsure of what my grade will be which makes me a little uneasy.
He helps a lot and I think everyone in the class is a much better speaker because of his class.

I was sketchy about taking speech again cause my high school speech class made me really not like public speaking, but after taking it from Gordon, I can come out of this class saying that I learned new things and am a better public speaker.
I wish i took his class before i did my pageants. Taking hes class has made me into a better speaker.
His class was great. First time speaking infront of a group of people and I loved it! He not only made it fun, but made it possible.
I really enjoyed this course. I looked forward to coming to class because I was never bored and learned a lot. I believe that everyone, including me, will leave this class with the ability to give speeches and the ability to understand different aspects of speech.
He is an EXCELLENT instructor! He has a GREAT teaching method.

Yes, I would recommend him to other students because he clearly states what he expects from his students and goes over the speeches structures and guidelines well.
Yes, because he's a solid teacher, very set in his attitude with an understanding of the world that makes him compassionate on the inside. He'll appreciate any kind of speech and try to be positive to point out the good things.
I would recommend other students to take his course because he keeps it up to date with the younger students.

I would recommend Professor Carlson to other students because his class was truly enjoyable. He really makes you work for you grade on the speeches, but being challenged is not a bad thing. I would take another class from him anytime.

I really enjoyed this class because it was fun and very interesting. I learned a lot and I feel like I really got better at speaking in public and knowing how to speak in public and what things to look for so that I can improve in the future. I was however somewhat frustrated with certain grades that I made throughout the semester. There were times that I felt I should have received a better grade than I did. And since the majority of the grades come from the speeches it is hard to improve when I thought that I already was doing my best. Also, there were not many extra credit opportunities, which made it very difficult for those who are not very good public speakers. I would expect that a student's grade should reflect the amount of work and energy they put into the class and not necessarily how good they are as a public speaker. There are many people who are not good public speakers but this course is required, so how are those people expected to make a good grade? There were times that I put in more time and effort in my speeches than other people who got better grades than I did, which seemed somewhat unfair to me.
i would take the class again just for fun
