13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

He teaches very weell, also he uses many videos for class. So students can understand easily. beeing a good one, of course.. helpful, good and has very interesting fun lectures. Creative Energetic Funny He knows the subject and is fair in grading Professor Gross provided a very easy-going, natural environment. This made it easy for students to get involved in discussions or ask questions. He was a funny teacherthat was enthusiastic about his work Dr. Gross was very approachable outside of the classroom. His teaching techniques were very engaging and informative. I was motivated to do further research outside of class on topics he had presented. Dr. Gross is extremely approachable and willing to supply any extra information requested. He explains the information very well. He encourages people to read and is always willing to help and encourage students to work harder and has helpful tips. the way he taught was interesting Knew what he was doing and talking about and was always willing to meet with students funny Dr. Very funny guy, great to when he's teaching, especially with his accent. As the semester went on, he got to know each student's personality and greatly adapted his teaching strategy for us based on how we were during class, which was pretty cool. Brings in people within the subject field, who are great people to help him teach certain aspects of the subject. Also had an online component to help with teaching, which sort of helped with the test. Also included extra credit. Gross was able to explain concepts using real life experiences where I feel I could relate to the experiences myself. He explains well, offers a lot of bonuses and understands and put time for students in need. Very optimistic, well organized and fun. He was funny. He is passionate about the subject, which helps him present the material in a way that is interesting and easy to understand. Friendly, clear, encouraging and understanding. He is very good at teaching because he makes hard things easy to understand he has good examples and good video that explains very clearly. He always has anecdotes to make us understand better psychology. Professor Gross knows a lot about psychology and it's interesting learning about psychology from. Also I like the activities and things we learn in class. He also shared how he became a psychology professor and his past experiences in the psychology field. letting us think He is active in class and presents a calming environment. He knows what he's talking about and whatever he says is backed up or is flawless. he also makes learning fun because he gets us to interact instead of just boring lectures. Very passionate about subject and very caring and understanding towards students hes fair, hes friendly, he's well educated on the subject and makes the material interesting He was one of my best teachers as well!!! He created such a good environment for learning! He would talk and give example as well as let the students participate and giving their opinion or say in the matter and all the students were very actively participating in his class. This class was so interesting but very fun! very effective!! I loved this class! I like how Professor Gross lectures and how he encourages student participation. He uses very real examples that students can relate to. I also like how he addresses each question from students even if it takes a while to answer. He is a very enthusiastic teacher which is very engaging for students. teaching and explaining the materials in class he is very understanding to his students and he shows concerns about their own life and other priorities at home or work or family. he is also well organized and he talks about other stories especially about his that relates to what he is lecturing about. He is smart and knows what he is talking about. I feel that Dr. Gross's major stregnths are his abilities to communitcate well with the students and explain complicated theories in ways that are easy to understand. Dr. Gross obviously has excellent knowledge of the subject. his experiance of the subject knowing the material he taught Great knowledge of the field, going in to depth very well on the subject in class. he knew a lot about psychology and made it very interesting. giving demonstrations. knows the subject well, uses great examples to clarify point. understanding of students situations. He was encouraging discussions within the class so there was a better understanding of the curriculum He knows the subject matter vey well and explains the material in an understanding way. Mr. gross's strengths would be that he knows the subject well as well as different case studies that others might question. another strength would be that he was once a student so he tries to implement different learing techniques. The ability to allow students to strive and pass PSY 100 with flying colors. Smart, funny, fun, interactive, very knowledgeable and encourages students to keep an open mind to different perspectives. He is great teacher that could explain life related things.I learned a lot in this class. He knows his subject well and is able to use different teaching styles: visual, kinetic, oral, etc. to help students to understand the material. Very personable. I had a lot of fun in his class and learned a lot. The major strengths of Philippe Gross as a teacher was his vast knowledge of Psychology and his examples were way me clear than the ones that were in the book. Also, that he showed us videos every so often that made it easier to understand the theories that we were learning. He loves the subject and he loves helping students to become interested in the subject as well. He proposes new ideas and perspectives and has the class discuss. Knows the subject he is teaching very well. He knew his stuff. provided very interactive classes Knew his information. He was a good at lectures. He knew what he was teaching. Very funny. He answered any questions, and he made the class very fun and understanding! He is very personable, which allows us to come to him for anything (we aren't scared to ask questions). He also knows the course material very well. His knowledge of the subject and his ability to convey those to his students. his major strengths as a teacher is how detailed he is in all his lectures. As a teacher, he provided examples that will help us understand the concepts better. Went over terms that were unfamiliar to us.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

none, I have no place... maybe have more assignments in class to help better understand each chapter, because just reading doesn't help that much when it comes to exams. -More organization -Take time to go over upcoming assignments: expectations and due dates with more clarity -Less meditation He might be able to help students perform more successfully if the lectures were more consistent with the book. It would probably help to have an outline of the day's lecture on a powerpoint or on the board, and then teach accordingly to the outline. By doing this, lessons will be much more organized and students are able to take organized notes that will help them on the exams. Students will do well because they are tested on what they are taught directly from the professor; not just reading from the book. To make tests more reasonable The tests are cover a lot of information, he could be a little more specifiic on what to study. I enjoyed the challenge though. The tests were a bit hard because of the examples given for some of the queestions. probably he can be more clear on working A lot of assignments were very unclear and hard to understand and comprehend no. Some of the test questions were pretty confusing, practice test's just like the real test would be helpful. None Nothing, he's a great instructor. Be more involved with your students. I felt at times he didn't show concern when I was confused on an assignment. Make tests more objective (less wordy). The tests at the library were not what I expected and hard to understand. I don't have any suggestions. have a better plan of attack Make a better study guide. The test are really confusing. Go into deep information. keep doin what your doin one of the top three teachers i have ever had. be more available outside of class None. More structured lectures would help students to take in information more clearly. None the only thing that I would suggest Philippe to change is the way the tests/exams are taken. I would rather take an exam in class than to go to the testing center, because some tests had words that we (students) didn't know which throws off the whole question. Nothing I suggest that maybe he make up the tests instead of using the standard test. Some of the wording of the questions is quite confusing even if you now the material. Because the test is taken it in the testing center, there is no way for a student to get clarification on what the question is asking. less french, little hard to understand Making the tests a little more understandable. -Go over assignments better, I was confused most of the time because the second day we're told we have this big assignment to do. But then we never really talk about it much again. It was a really messy experience. -Make the test questions yourself or be available in the room to clarify them. The questions are presented in a way that wasn't very easy to understand. Some didn't seem as if we had a well enough discussion in class to really grasp certain areas. And it was reflected clearly in the test grades. - no change send us the links to the videos before class to watch and discuss later. feels like we just go to class to watch videos. also make students get more serious on group projects... it's really hard to do alone most of the time. i understand that this was his first semester teaching, and so there was a lot of things that i have done in this class that i didn't do in my other classes. the class got out of control at times and the students were always putting in their two cent comments. he should let them know that he is the professor and not them. using power point presentation for lectures and the educational psychological videos was good Don't allow overly-opinionated students to dominate learning time in the classroom. One big issue I had was too many students wanted to voice their opinions when it wasn't necessary. They just wanted to comment on everything and it got to the point where every topic became a debate. one thing i think he could improve on would be the way he makes the test questions. He used the question bank from the publisher, but when we took the test what we were told to study wasnt really reflected on the test. another thing he could work on would be controlling class discussions and lectures. there are times when certain students like to ask questions that may take us off topic or cut him off in the middle of an explanation, therefore out questions or his point doesnt get made. I would like to see him able to put his foot down, becase sometimes material doesnt get discussed/covered because we went off topic. I hope that Professor Gross will not let students take over his class. Although he is a wonderful teacher and very nice stand your ground and ask them to politely to keep your comments to themselves until the end of your lecture. None Tests. Better control of the class. My classmates would try and talk at the same time, especially during discussions and activities. More guidelines for the collaborative paper and presentation to make sure each person in the group is not left out and shown respect (especially when they disagree). Another possibility would be to allow classmates/group members to discuss the plan for the paper and presentation during class time. The exams were a little difficult with so many questions. I suggest that if possible the tests on Laulima can be revised in a way where the test questions can be more clear. Often times my classmates and I had a misunderstanding of many questions that were on the test. The way the test questions were worded was an issue but I'm not sure what could be done to help that. The study guides were extremely helpful though. Class seemed very unorganized at the beginning but it was just because most assignments was due toward the second half of the semester. So looking at it now it actually is very organized. it could've been his accent that got me confused with assignments Try to have a more organized schedule He should make the tests more easier to comprehend. None More assignments maybe, so that students may practice what they have learned and it would help prepare for tests. Shorten the due dates with severe repurcussions for late/incomplete work. I believe deadlines are important. maybe make the tests shorter, involving less chapters in one test. Writing more notes on the board for tests. None I think that there should be more activities that will help students to interact better. The only chance that I've encountered was to work with groups in a group project and the more recent, doing a role-playing activity. I think that by doing group activities help students to understand more about themselves as a person and as a contributor in the group. After all, this is a psychology class. Some students would also prefer or learn better with visual aid (like myself). Therefore, I suggest that Gross should also include powerpoints AS MUCH as he provided videos for us to watch. Sometimes, it was really hard to follow along with the lectures considering the marker ran out of ink and what not. With regards to the tests, I suggest that Gross go over each answer. Although, he mentioned he would print out some kind of answer sheet to go over with the class, he didn't get around to reviewing it with us. It wasn't enough that I know my score but rather, I know the reason why my answer was wrong.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

He gave many chance for students who didn't follow his class for extra credits as well as he has careful concern to all students. kept consistent contact via e-mails.. and really put effort in helping students out instead of pointing us in another direction. always offers help and responds to emails fast. Bajillion bonus points and curving tests generous with extra credit assignments He constantly recommended doing the extra online course help that came with the textbook and he asked students if there was anything that they wanted him to go over again. He was leneient with his deadlines He shows great concern for students. I requested information on meditation and he provided me with a plethora of resources and insight. During our group projects, I approached him with concerns of inactive group members. He approched them in a respective manner and I saw a drastic improvements int their contributions. (He motivates students) He encourage students to extra information which turned out to be very helpful and gave a different approach to the topic if you didn't understand as well. he shared his opinion to class stayed after class to answer questions that students had respondse e-mail quit. Encourages people to read the text and do the online component a bit. Always wants students to participate in exercises and express their views on certain topics for very interesting discussions. A lot of understandings. He offers help and emails students who are behind. Gives out a lot of reminders. Not much. He listened to us and made adjustments to help us succeed. Offering help and opportunities to improve performance. He answered questions in class. He was also there when I questions after class and he took the time to answer my questions. Thank you. he cares He's nice to them. Always scolded us to study and just try. Was always very fair and listened well. Also very flexible and willing to work with students to solve problems he would answer any questions that were asked and gave us plenty extra credit to make up for low test scores or missing assignments He would talk to us after class or in office hours or via email. Very helpful teacher! He would let us talk and say our opinion and debate in class so we can learn how psychology works and effects everyone by perspectives as well. I learned a lot about people and myself from this class. He made sure we understood the material and even provided us with "Study Guides" before each exam. I was able to email him regarding our group project and many students have stayed after class to ask him questions. He listened to their concerns about the difficulty of the exams. Personally, I did not find them to be unreasonably difficult. They weren't easy or hard, what I expect an exam should be. He also created study guides when asked. he answered our questions when we had any he showed concern for the students by provided office hours so that if you missed a lecture, you will be able to sit in his office and he will go over anything that you had missed. Always checking our work. Dr. Gross was availbale to the students outside of the classroom. He always answered emails promptly and provided further assistance on complex situations with group work. He showed concern for his students by making study sheets for the tests that got better with each test. Also, he encouraged us to use the program associated with the text book to further help us improve our grades on the tests. many ways His mini quiz he had in class to see if people were getting the concepts he was always happy, and answered all of our questions. yes. always asked if we understood. he adjusts his exams according to the class averages. reminded students that assignment due dates was coming up He was prompt with return emails if we had questions He created study guides that were very helpful to students. when we reported to him that the test questions did correlate with the book or the online study questions, he wanted us to let him know which test questions we had trouble with and he went back and either gave us credit for it or took it out. Giving extra help! Would answer any questions, took time after class for students and would explain material to anyone in different ways so that everyone could follow along. Contacted them in case they are not attending Took the time to meet with students if they should have any questions, concerns, and problems. He gave me some problem-solving suggestions. When my father passed away and I missed his class, he was very understanding. Philippe Gross showed concern for students by giving us a study guide for us to prepare for the upcoming exams. Responded to e-mails, met after class to discuss things. Would extend test dates on a case by case basis. yes He encouraged class participation and answered all questions. He always interacted with us. answered questions out of classes promptly. HE helped us if we needed help. Asked if were sure that we knew the subject area and that if we had any questions at the end of all lectures. He also made sure that we when the test dates were. He had lots of office hours. He made sure to email me if I missed any days and let me know what had to be done. Emailed us extra credit opportunities and emailed us about missing assignments/grades curved the tests generously and gave us many opportunities to add to or improve our grades. he would answer our questions if we had any. he make compromises with the students. Reminding students who are in danger of failing. Adjusting due dates to accommodate unprecedented events. On the exams he gave us plenty time to complete and study guides to help us. He was understanding about our test scores. He let us do an assignment over instead or giving us a bad grade. He posted our grades throughout the semester. Corresponding regularly thru email. Offered a lot of chances for extra credit . Used props and games to help us learn One example of how he demonstrated concern was helping out the students in the group project. My fellow classmates and myself would go directly to him for help after class and or during office hours if we didn't understand a certain project/material, etc... He would explain to us if we didn't understand it and asked us again if we still didn't understand it.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes, you can learn PSY very effectively. yes, because you don't come accross teachers that are here for students and not just a pay check everyday. he wants to teach.. yes, he is a fun teacher and really knows his stuff. Sure, easy grader and kept class interesting yes, he is fun and knowledgeable I would recommend this professor because the class is pretty straightforward. All that must be done is to read the book, take the exams, and do the papers. Yes, he is a good teacher Absolutely, I would recommend Dr. Gross to every student attending KCC. His class is extremely facinating and somewhate challenging. He goes the extra mile to ensure his students suceed. I would recommend Philippe Gross to other student because he is fair and very helpful. He gives examples in class in which people can relate to a lot. He is always there to help a studnent in need of help and tries his best to work with them. yes, interesting no because his course was difficult to understand and found assignments pointless yes, cause he is one of good and kind instructor. He's a great guy, but as far as I know, in my class, everyone has a hard time with the tests so that part might be iffy for average people. 50/50 I would, whether they're particularly interested in the subject or not. He made what I thought would be a dull class exciting while still teaching us all the information. Yes. Clear and helpful teacher, very knowledgeable. I would recommend Philippe Gross to everybody who has (or want ) to take psychology because at the beginning of the semester I thought that psychology was boring and hard and with him it was fun and clear. I would recommend professor Gross because he teaches psychology well and I enjoying his class while learning about psychology. He makes people interested in psychology. yes, his class is a good starting point I suppose so, he is a really nice teacher. He makes the class fun. yes because he doesn't teach by just lecturing, he gets the class involved and gives so much reality examples that makes you feel like you're there so the learning process is much more fun that boring lectures. Yes, because at the very least he will teach students how to be passionate and enjoy what ever it is they choose to pursue. Yes if you are going into psychology he is the man. yes!! He was a very good teacher and I am so glad I took him for this class! He created such a comfortable atmosphere and such a great, funny, humorous teacher! Yes. It was the most enjoyable Psychology class I have ever taken. He makes the material easier to understand and absorb. YES. It is his first semester teaching full-time and I believe it will only get better. yes i would recommend him to other students because he is cool and fair I would kind of recommend Philippe Gross to other students, it's just that his accent is a little strong and is sometimes confusing about what he is talking about at certain times. Yeah Yes, because his teaching style is very affective! I would recommend Dr. Gross to other students because before this class, I had no idea of what I want to go into. Now I am almost positive that I want to go into something to do with psychology. yes made me want to come to learn more Yes I would, Philippe Gross was a great instructor in class, but he may have gone too deep in certain subjects and didn't provide a vast overview of chapters. This was great, but made the tests harder. i would recommend him because he is enthusiastic and loves to teach. he has a cool french accent that i now can understand. yes, very friendly and always offers to help. it depends what kind of learner the student is... for myself i would have been better off taking this class online. overall i wouldn't recommend or not recommend him. neutral yes of course, he made Psych easy to understand Yes, because he explains the material very well. I would reccomend him to other students because he knows his stuff and he tries his best to make it fun and not boring. I would definitely recommend Professor Gross to other colleagues. Yes, fun and great experience. Best class ever!! Yes I would recommend him for sure. It depends on the student. If the student likes hands-on, visual (videos in class) and class discussions/activities; than yes. The class also goes really quickly and keeping up with the reading can be difficult. Per chapter and lecture, he doesn't cover everything from the textbook. If you enjoy psychology its very helpful, otherwise you might find the course slow and boring at times. He has a French accent which makes some words difficult to understand, but he's funny. Absolutely. Yes, I would recommend Philippe Gross to students who are interested in learning about how Psychology and need it an elective. Yes, he makes the course very interesting Yes, because he helps give you a good understanding of psychology. Yes because he's a good psych teacher. yes, because class sessions are more than just lectures. Yes, he is very easy to learn from and is very fun! Yes because he was a very inspiring teacher and made the learning enviornment very fun. Yes, all in all he is a good teacher. Very much, as he is an informative professor who is able to teach his subject in a coherent effective manner. Not sure because of the fact it all depends on the person im talking to is interested in taking a psych class. Yes, very fun class and lectures. Absolutelyhes awesome fun knowledgeable As opposed to professors who heavily teach on academic aspects of the material, Gross did the latter. He would go beyond the academic part and reach students on the emotional level. I liked that towards the end of (some days in) class, he would help us meditate. However, this wasn't enough. I still feel that since Psychology covers a lot of theories and what not, it is still important to help us understand the concepts. I wouldn't recommend Gross to students who are not prepared to read the chapters beforehand. Throughout the semester, I read a few pages in the beginning but lacked motivation to thoroughly read till the end. So when I got to class, Gross would be lecturing on something I half-understood.

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

humorous teacher, has great lectures and fun activities in class. Needs to be more organized especially about expectations with the group project. He is great guy. I've approached him multiple times outside of class, he's very fun to talk to. Nice guy. thanky ou very much for your support not thing else. Funny guy, friendly and accessible for people, and adapts with students as time goes on, so we pay a bit more attention. Gross is someone who will give you a lot of understanding with the course. He was funny. He's a nice guy and relates to his students very well. Thanks him for his efforts to prepare classes for us. Papers and presentation are not very hard if you come to class, I really enjoyed this semester with him. Thank you professor Gross for helping me learn more about psychology and I think this class also helps with deal with life. I have learned about empathic listening though I still have to work on it and practice it. try to make it a little more ... fun ... no, maybe just think of more ways to get the students involved He's a very nice guy. Thank you so much! He has a very open class which I think is fantastic, it gives everyone plenty of chance to get involved in class which makes it more fun but also I think students can learn from other students just as well as they can learn from professors which maximizes learning effectiveness. Awesome accent. He's funny. he did a good job throughout the semester and he dealt with us really well Philippe Gross is actually a well-organized instructor and very kind and considerate. He is good at explaining things. N/A He stated at the beginning of the semester that he would be going over the meatier subjects in the book but that ultimately we were responsible for the entire chapter when taking the exams. I made a mental note of this and made a point of studying the book and using connect but I think some students didn't really "hear" him since it was the beginning of the semester and everyone was working on getting their schedules settled, etc. He might want to remind students of that more so that that first exam isn't an "eye opener" If he could review the book material a little more in detail since the tests are based only on book material. please present sample questions of the exams prior to them, because many of the questions were not always understandable, especially with psychology concepts. He is a new teacher, and very nice and helpful Wish he could be my teacher next semester! He can teach you alot. He has a good sense of humor and he relates his lectures to what we most commonly know about. I would take all of his offered classes if I had time

have a great summer MR. Gross.. thanks for a great semester!! I felt that the presentations were unnecessary for the project and should be taken out in the future. Most of the groups BSd their presentations and were very poor. It just seemed like a waste of time Thank you Professor Gross has humor when he teaches. Also, rather than just teaching the course material, he teaches lessons that can be used in life. [i.e controlling emotions, relieving stress, meditation, respect, etc] I loved taking this class. I intend on taking more of his courses. nope no other comment. Have fun teaching future students! There were students who were not aware of due dates and guidelines for assignments however, he made them very clear through written and posted documents. He was very concerned about it and I appreciate that. He was much more clear and concise about his expectations than most teachers, but it was in writing rather than spoken during class. NONE I liked that the test wasn't timed and that Gross provided study guides cause a lot of the chapters cover a lot of theories/concepts and other definitions that would be really hard to remember. I also liked that the test had a lot of questions. But it was difficult to answer some cause some of the statements were really tricky and I thought that it could be either answers presented but it may just've been me who didn't really study that much.
