13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
This course was really great in learning therapeutic communication. It is a totally new concept for me and was a little difficult to grasp at first but now I think I'm getting the hang of it.
I liked all of your entertaining stories of nursing. They were fun to listen to. The stories/scenarios that were told helped me on the test because they stuck in my mind. I really liked the death & dying part, even though it brought out sadness. The assignments were pertinent to course objectives.
I enjoyed the different assessments we had to do. I just wish that they had been spaced further apart instead of all piling up at the end of the semester.
I enjoyed doing the self reflections, i thought they gave us a chance to express our thoughts on the subject
the loss and the stress assignment, but the family paper is way too heavily weighted!!
Janene has such a great personality. She takes the time to explain everything and listen to you.
The strengths of the HCC Nursing program are its faculty. Period. It isnt a difficult concept to grasp, capice? the weakness of the program is often the sense that we are grinding on, checking off a list of stuff that some invisible hand has decreed MUST be checked off and that nobody really gives two hoots in a handbasket about.
I liked how we learned about therapeutic communication
I enjoyed doing weekly journals
Thanks for making Lecture not so boring...love the comics in the power points
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
Just not have computer issues because it took time out of our lectures.
Organization of the material on Laulima would have helped.
Apply therapeutic communication to our clinical experiences more directly!
Yes, focus on the strengths of the program. which is you guys, as I say, we can buy books, instructional materials and assorted gee gaws from amazon, we Cant buy your wealth of experience, your humanity, your insights anywhere. Let me ask you, what would inspire you ? what changes would you make, what opportunities have you always wished to avail yourselves of in teaching? You guys make a difference, you matter. Lets start a revolution of sorts and kick over the traces, break a few rules, ask a few new questions. Where you guys lead, we will follow! (hey, what do we know?) without joy....why bother?
I think that the projects should have been spread out better from the beginning and not have a lot of things due all around the same time as well as preparing for the finals.
what office hours? seemed instructors were always in a rush to leave class. need better organization. Too many hands in one basket. Need laulima posts for the next day class to be posted earlier this semester, posts were not posted for class until late the night before. too many assignments, instructors unable to return corrected assignments in a timely manner for students to received feedback to improve for the next assignment.
15. Other comments:
I really learned a lot of interesting things and it will be very useful to use as part of my nursing career.
I had a fun and educational semester. Everything was necessary to learn as a successful future nurse.
Janene, you are a treasure, your humanity and caring shine through. You are an individual in what tends to be too often a faceless exercise in procedure, and that alone reminds me that nursing needs to be focused on the individual to be worth a damn.. Thank you!
Thanks Janene

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I liked the clinical days.
I like you guys, I dislike technology when it detracts for our shared humanity. ooh, and BAN POWERPOINT!
I enjoyed our clinical time, and pracice in the lab, it really gave us a chance to learn the material better!
All in all the course was great. The only problem was having to do all the projects at the end of the semester and they all were due around the same time. I felt that each project turned in could have been done better if I had more time between each one.
Even though I was not in your clinical group for rotations, I did see you around. When I had questions, you had answers. Thank you for taking the time to help me even though I was not your direct responsibility. All of the projects were helpful in learning the course objectives.
Clinical time and clinical relevant work- otherwise the other assignments feel like busy work and take away from important skills and nursing info!
Clincals of course...Thanks for allowing me to grow.
I especially enjoyed the clinical portion of this course.
I enjoyed doing weekly reflections and clinical time
No comment.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
Following the time schedule that was posted when we signed up for the courses. I didn't know that there would be days that we would go to the hospital later or stay later...(but Janene, I appreciated how you tried to follow the schedule and give us breaks :D)
more one on one interaction with faculty, less babysitting, ie, powerpoint more chaos, less mind numbing order! sorry, I am a natural heretic
Collaborating with other instructors more. We often felt lost sometimes when we would ask the instructors on when something is due or when we should meet because they didn't get a chance to talk to one another about it yet. Also having the same format for the clinical assessments for each instructor. Sometimes when we were to ask a student from another group about the clinical assessment it was totally different than what my instructor wanted.
I would have liked to learn the details on how to do a nursing concept map before clinical rotations so that I could have included them in my clinical assessment papers.
More focused, less busy work!! Give more time to clinical skills and less paperwork! Also, please give a format for concept map and care plans well before it's due!
give Erick a survey too so we can tell him how much he is appreciated
Organize the material on Laulima better.

Teachers need to communicate better.
More time in clinicals
Please do not start a lecture without Kona. We are all responsible for the same material on our tests. If Kona can't get the lecture, Hilo shouldn't either.
Have lecture notes available ahead of time for those who utilizes the computer lab for printing purposes, so material can be reviewed prior to class lecture and student can be more informed on what lecture will involve in class.
15. Other comments:
while students whine on and on about wanting order, organization, clearly defined parameters and expectations, May I remind everyone that life is none of these things, it is messy, confusing, challenging and there is seldom an instruction manuel included. I wonder if a disservice is done when everything is too clearly defined. Perhaps leaning to confront and navigate disorder is the real role of education, perhaps learning to ask the right question, NOT find the expected answer should be our goal? PS Death to powerpoint!
Great Course! Very Memorable....Thank You!
Loved clinicals with you.
Jeanene teaches and assumes a level of knowledge for 1st year adn's that we have not learned yet. quote from Jeanene "not everything on the exam will be from what we talk about in lecture" but the question was not even in assigned readings and we were NOT given enough background knowledge about the questions to be able to "critically think it out" everyone tries to use critical thinking when they're taking the test. the people who got that one right just guessed. it was 50/50.
Overall, I had a fun and educational semester. Thank you.
Thanks Janene
Excellent lecturer.
Very informative and thorough with explanations and lecture material. Thank uou for your knowledge and experiences,

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I liked the fact that this program includes variety of ways to learn. Doing SIM man was great!! I learned a lot through that! I like that Eric the lab guy incorporated dosage calc quizzes everyother week to help prep for clinical competency exam. Some readings that were assigned was irrelevant to the test.
I liked the well organized lectures, I enjoyed the instructor's sense of humor, and above all, I appreciate all the instructors best intention to pass to us their knowledge of nursing.
Janene is awesome :)
I liked that assignments were spaced out throughout the semester and not all due near the end like the first semester.
I like the exmaple scenarios which help me relate to real-life scenarios.
I loved Janene's lectures, I feel like I retained alot more info and I really like when you tell stories as examples of the subject
I like the teaching project because I learned more information about the subject I researched. It was a great way for me to learn information by having to teach it. My favorite part about the class was clinical. In clinicals I was able to practice what I learned. Clinicals helped me to know the importance of proper protocols and gave me evidence as to why I was to do things a certain way.
i liked how we were able to practice various skills at the lab to familiarize ourselves with new equipment. practicing in the lab made us more proficient when at the hospital.
I love the powerpoints that are filled with visuals. It puts a lot of the information into reality, instead of just words. The comics are great, too!
I really liked the classes with Janene. I think she added a lot to what could have been dry subjects. I would have liked to have met her in person.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
Janene has a challenge with being on the clinical floor becasue it is a new setting for her. However, I believe with her positive attitude and open to learn she will be okay. Overall she is an awesome lecturer. She has great knowledge about the whole aspect of nursing. She is the guru of the nursing process and creating care plans for patients. She has a good heart and I really enjoyed working with her. She allows me to critical think, provides constructive criticism that allows me to persevere and motivates me to learn. She is a valuable addition to the HCC nursing program and we are lucky to have her as a instructor.
coordination between the instructors could use a touch more work :)
More Sim man exercises.
I have no suggestions on improving this course.
maybe instead of giving meds every other day pick a few people to give meds for the week and that way the student is more confident giviving the med because they already gave it on the first day and everyone would know what to expect with the meds with crushing etc
Getting grades as soon as possible would help reduce stress and anxiety. Getting the feedback helps me to know what I learned or what I need to improve on. Itâ??s important because there is so much material to learn every week. By getting feedback/grades later than sooner, makes my learning ineffective because I am occupied with the current material and not focusing on what I did not understand from the content before due to the time that passed.
it would be nice if the lab was open longer and on the weekends to accommodate the student schedules.
Continue her excellent style of teaching.
Questions more straight forward, please.

38. Comment on the instructor's professional attitude and behavior.
She is very professional and easy to approach. It is obvious to me that she is very knowledgable and skillful in nursing. I truly admire her for standing up for us and standing her grounds during difficult times. I am grateful for that.
Janene carries her self with a professional demeanor. She is positive and cares deeply about her students learning and succeeding in our future endeavors. She provides constructive criticism that helps me to grow as a student and academically and also personally. She is easy to approach with questions and is always ready to answer questions. I enjoy working with Janene because in times of frustration I can go to her and she will always have something to say that will either put a smile on my face or allow me to move on with a positive outlook on the situation.

Janene loves to teach and share information with us students. It was very helpful that Janene shared her experiences because it taught me that I need to keep an up to date knowledge base. Janeneâ??s lectures were attention grabbing by making them interactive. I learned more in lecture when there was discussion involved.
janene is a very good and nurturing teacher. she encourages us to think things through and is always there to help us. she is easy to talk to and very approachable. she is very knowledgeable about the nursing field and motivates everyone to do their best. janene is an awesome teacher.
Excellent teacher, focused on student learning.
She is well prepared and knowledgeable. Having a specialty helps even more with the enthusiasum, when the lecture comes around.
I enjoyed her humorous but educational lectures.
She is funny and she gives a light easy attitude to the lecture. We still learn.
39. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
I enjoyed her sense of humor. It was especially helpful before tests. Janene is able to provide criticism in a very professional manner. It doesn't make me feel belittled. When a question was presented, she would not always give the answer. Instead, she would help me to use my critical thinking skills and help guide my thinking process. I always felt very comfortable with her and she is easy to talk too.
She has great knowledge in all concepts of nursing. She is always prepared for lectures even though in the beginning it was a challenge for her in computer skills and posting power points but she improved as the weeks went by. She is the "guru" of the nursing process and helps me to understand what is needed to create an appropriate careplan depending on pt's condition.
Great attitude
Janene is a treasure of Nursing experiences. She tries and does teach us with humor about nursing, the nursing process, and the creation of Nursing Care Plans using the correct Nursing Diagnosis.
Janene is a great part of the nursing staff because she has her strengths in areas that the others aren't so familiar with and she is also very easy to talk to and is very knowlegeable.
Organization and clear understanding of subjects.
I like that you give us suggestions on what to focus on with patients besides the usual focused assessments, especially those who are dying etc and ways to ask those questions to get more experience
Her humor. It helped us lessen our anxiety before exams and made the course more interesting. Janene's humor brought light into areas that are tougher to deal with. Janene also made suggestions that gave me a different perspective.
Willingness to help
what was the most valuable about janene was the fact that she was approachable. i never felt discouraged or intimdated by her. i always knew if i had a question i could go to her and not have my head bitten off.
Janene provides great delivery of difficult subject matter. She is an excellent lecturer and easily maintains listener attention. i appreciate her humor.
Janene Jefferies brought different and innovative ways of learning into this course, she made it interesting by combining humor into the subject matter which helped to grasp many a meaning of a serious topic.
When lecturing on her specialty, gives her a natural enthusiasum in the class room, which is contagious. That goes for the rest of the teachers, too!
She provided a lot of resouces to the topic.
40. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Janene had a difficult time on the medical unit but I think it was the nurses there that gave her a hard time because she was a new instructor form the maineland. Getting use to the whole pyxis system, BMV and unit took some time for her to feel comfortable but thats understandable.
nothing.
I can not recall a time that was least valuable or helpful. My concerns were attended to.
It would be helpful to have you easier to find in clinicals
