12. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Learning how databases can be applicable in an outside setting. Normally I would have grouped databases and design within ICS degrees but I can see how this would be very important towards libraries. Co-teaching was important; I felt I got a better understanding doing this rather than sit through lecture, lecture, lecture.
The real-life application of our newly-learned skills was a great idea. It took the very abstract concepts behind a database and concretized them.

20. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
Please see "Other comments"
Laulima forums were rally confusing having to go to another classes folder as well as checking our own. We were told that things were being posted for us, but it would take so much time searching all the different forums within two classes that it would become really hard. Also it was hard to understand exactly what she wanted when the instructions were constantly changing, so we would just improvise half of the time. She also doesnt fully explain the terms of all of her assignments.
While the real-life application was a great idea, it was also pretty difficult to apply these concepts to something we were in the process of working on. Perhaps if the course material was compressed into half a semester and the application or creation phase was reserved for the second half.
21. Other comments:
I think a big issue was the final project. There was a lot of confusion when two classes who have never met nor spoken to each other due to time conflicts were ordered to group together. There didn't seem to be a backup plan if anything were to happen to a member of either group, especially taking into account group members dropping, not meeting with mentor, or not communicating. I did not feel comfortable with the requirement of uploading on ScholarSpace. I would gladly upload a project I had more confidence in and was complete rather than an incomplete project. Other quandaries: Laulima The forum was scattered and not helpful. I think if it was set in a different forum setting that I've seen other instructors on Laulima use, it would make postings simple and topics easier to understand than constantly uploading in dead threads. Communication Professor Quiroga is very knowledgeable in the subject area however I felt when she asked for discussion, she did not give us a chance to express ourselves. It seemed like she was asking rhetorical questions a majority of the time. I would be happy to explain how the database would relate in a creative thinking process versus regurgitating in the allotted increments she gave us information from the textbook. Textbook There was no clear definition for textbook so each of us got different editions of the text. Made for reading difficult as the semester progressed.
I left kinda of like I was being attacked while I was in class, while she was asking me questions or for my opinion. Sometimes I would be taking notes on my computer and she would call my name in the middle of her lecture because I wasn't looking at her. So instead I would just stop taking notes so I wouldn't get called out. I did try to explain to her what I was doing a meeting with her. Being that Professor Quiroga is of indigenous origins you would think that she is open minded with things pertaining to ones cultural beliefs. Yet, at one point I was even told that I was crazy for believing that spirits could influence a person while researching or in everyday life. In my culture these kinds of things do happen to people. I understand that your culture and lifestyle is not the same but I do respect where you came from.
Dr. Quiroga was extremely helpful in the project and connecting with Debra, and devoted her personal time to helping to coordinate. She is very devoted to the concept of using Library and Information Science to helping the greater good and profoundly influenced my own views as how to continue with my career.
