13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

knowledgeable, understanding, provided good learning environment He knew very well of the arts. A very caring teacher who brings the most out of your artwork. Carl is a very intelligent and understanding man, he knows a lot about the subject and knows what's best for you. He teaches very well, power points and lectures were easy to understand. He is very nice and gives comments and criticism that helped me with my drawings. He knew the subject of the area, very informative and will tell you step by step how to do something. He gives clear and concise feedback, is able to guide you when you need help if asked, and does his best to keep on track of things. He's very knowledgeable in Drawing Mr. Jennings is very active in teaching and correcting students, and is always willing to give advice. He knows how to connect with his students, always willing to help them out with their concerns. He knows his stuff really well, he knows how to interact with his students, and he is always there to help and always gives positive feedback!

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

didn't really, unless they directly went up to him He made sure that each student had their own creativeness. Very good constructive criticism, and had extreme patience with us. He gave criticisms to students, gave them inputs and such. Posted up announcements and lecture notes online for us. He was accessible outside of class. By letting them know that he can only do so much when they attend class. Mr. Jennings always walks around and actively helps students, and is very articulate in helping students understand. He was always willing to take the time to help them out with any questions they had. By updating students about what's coming up and what's due soon.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

yes, just and knowledgeable Definitely. He's a great teacher to learn from because he is knowledgeable and is also a great artist himself. He's also a cool guy too. I would definitely recommend him to students because of the reasons above. Yes, his class was very fun and interesting to take, especially for art students who are developing their art skills. The projects gave me a different perspective in looking and using different types of methods and art materials. I would recommend professor Jennings to other students whom want to find a place to start learning about drawing. Yes. Good teacher. I would definitely recommend him to other students. Hes very patient and fun! Yes, he is a great teacher and you can learn a lot from him in one semester!

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

Hope to see ya around :) Thank you for teaching me to get out of my comfort zone when it comes to drawing using different material/mediums. Overall a great teacher. Very good teacher. I enjoyed your class this semester in being able to learn new techniques that I can apply to future endeavor. Thank you. :) Glad that I signed up for his class, the best art studio teacher I ever had at KCC!

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

Very knowledgeable in his subject matter. He encourages students to work on their own and gives hints, tips, and otherwise when he checks your work. Through that, I was able to be more observant of my mistakes and often agreed with many of the things he would point out. Knows his subject on painting very well. He knows about mixing colors and history and powerpoints are good. I wish powerpoints wouldn't take up the "whole" class. He speaks clearly and explains pretty well. He does really pretty well in a short period of time in getting out most amount of work with a short supply of paint. He doesn't make you buy a lot of paint and such. He explains art history very very well. He makes comments but if you are very opinionated, this class may not be for you He is great at helping students, and giving advice towards what can make the painting better. He's very patient, yet made it known when things were due and what the objective was. He is patient and really knows how to teach you the subject. I like how he mentions some background history of painting.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

N/A Probably give students more time to work on the assignments. I wish he would let student express themselves in their own way. He has an idea about what it should look like and we lose our creativity. He has a method and a way that he would already do it. He periodically doesn't get around to students until an hour later when the painting already took shape, good or bad. We run out of time to fix the mistake. He's done that with students during the semester, frustrating! He doesn't take any roll during the whole semester!!! You might like it. But a little odd. None

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

He acknowledges that it's hard to give as much help as the students may want him to during class time, so he is more than willing to let his students send a picture of their progress through the UH Gmail system. Then eventually, gives his reply with suggestions, comments, etc. Particularly helpful during the finals week, since a lot of students are still working on their paintings (including me). Always understanding if reasonable situations come up. No extensions, which is fair, but still offers any help that he can! Constantly helping students with their artwork. He speaks to each student and shows more interest in the independent students. He talks story and laughs with them. Maybe he thinks what they are painting are more interesting.... Each class, he came around to each individual student while we were painting and offered advice to how we could better our paintings.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Indefinitely yes. Mr. Jennings is a teacher I would highly recommend to any student. He's a very calm teacher, who maintains a gentle, but professional tone, both in his attitude and his profession as a teacher/professor (comments, suggestions, etc.) Probably good for students who are still sensitive about criticism of their work. Though personally, I hope Mr. Jennings can help them to learn to let go of some of that. In short, as long as students show effort in their work and maintain regular attendance, I honestly don't see why any student can't pass his class. Still, for the sake of one's own growth as an artist and a person, I find it imperative to try your hardest anyway, even if the student's schedule (especially if the student is taking many art studio classes and works) is very imperative. Yes, very nice instructor. Yes I would, I feel like he is a very good teacher and I learned a lot from him this semester.

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

Mr. Jennings was a great teacher in my previous session with him in my Intro to Drawing class, that I simply found it necessary to take him again for my painting class. Compared to what I heard from Mr. Sunabe's painting class, their methods are drastically different (such as that students don't "draw" with charcoal in his class or not learning the painterly technique), but personally, I find those things as more of an interesting challenge. Mr. Jennings really challenges the students to try different styles, and perhaps more importantly, see things more realistically and break our mindset's stereotypes. Though more importantly, to let go of any pressures or bouts of perfectionism. Probably one of the best art teachers that I will ever have! really pretty caring as far as instructors go at KCC. Other instructors are there and can't wait to go home. Carl is "present" when he is in class and you can tell that he respects art deeply. He's mature and steady. While some other instructors just think of it as a way to get paid and sometime disrespectful to students. Carl has never been disrespectful to students and I think he appreciates that even the beginning students can learn. He doesn't have an attitude problem. He is also pretty polite and such. He is a wonderful humble teacher, that is very helpful yet let us do our own thing with our painting.

18. Other comments:

Again, I think Mr. Jennings really helped me to grow as a person and slowly let myself find the confidence to let go or at least significantly lessen some of the insecurities that I have clung onto for a long time. Because of a certain lifestyle and set of expectations that I grew up with in childhood, a slight sense of perfectionism and arguably, a bit of an inferiority complex grew with me. However, in taking Mr. Jennings class (in both semesters), I thoroughly learned the truth in his statement that holding onto those traits only hold you back and prevent the potential of a greater learning curve, especially in art. I made a lot of mistakes and sometimes repeated those mistakes even when it was pointed out, but he helped me to find the strength to not give up. As people, we desire a lot of control and a sense that what we understand and interpret is right. Everything about Mr. Jennings's class almost seems philosophical in that we have to let go a lot of what we claim to understand about art (if not, much more) and be open-minded. Being open-minded helps you see things for what they are, which certainly helps with portraying realism (what is the focus in this Intro class), but also open to a sense of creativity through understanding more about portraying the "actual" subject matter. So thank you again, Mr. Jennings for helping me to learn a lot from the two classes I took from you. I honestly wish I could take more classes from you (like your color theory class in the Spring), but I can't, thanks to getting into the NMA program. However, I do think your help has sincerely allowed my potential and dedication in the art field to have significantly increased compared to if I didn't take your classes. Really, I don't think I could ever do anything to repay you in full for everything you have done for me. Thus, I could only ever give you my sincere thanks for now, but I do hope to return the favor to you in some way in the future. May good karma bless you in the future and continue to take care of yourself!

He is very well-organized person. - Knowing the subject matter - Keeping us interested in the lecture He makes everybody feel free to say our opinions. He respected all students thinking. He keeps it interesting and is always trying to get everyone involved and on there toes He makes lectures funny and interesting, and relates them to students, so we walk out of the room inspired. Different ways to view things Very well prepared, he understood the material was able to delivered effectively. Immensely engaging.offers insights, asks questions, explains things in a very fluid way. He did very well explaining, giving examples and setting up activities. He knew his subject really well and made it easier for me to understand. I learned so much from this man. Thank you professor jennings! He is an inspiration. I don't see him as a typical teacher, more of a leader and his passion about the subject makes everything interesting. His humour and ability to relate to us. He is serious when required and can also share laughters with the students, which I actually see as a strong incitament to a great professor and human being. He is very good at explaining things and allowing students to learn what they want to learn and also more. stretching a students mind The magic of unconditional love seems to radiate out from him, to encourage freedom of expression and fostering the uniqueness of each student. He is on the cutting edge of education's future, presenting ideas that are "news" to us, that are new ways of looking at education and our futures. He addresses issues that are core for us and the world. Classes are always fun and highly informative. His are life-changing classes. I

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

No. - Nothing, he's a great teacher I think now is good. Instead of making the class so lack in the beginning I would kind of structure it a little bit better and give more time in class on the research projects for those days that we didnt do much. I found that towards the end of the semester the "cruise" class ended up being the one I was rushing to get things done for None More out of classroom time. Giving two days for classes to present projects instead of one. Some felt rushed. I really liked when we would step out of our classroom settings and be one with nature. That one day where we sat in a circle in the middle of the field that was really fun. I also like when he told us to get into a big circle and talk about what we had researched. I found that really interesting for our class and also a better way to see everyoneʻs faces. Sometimes when we sit in rows we donʻt see everyone and thus donʻt know anyone. So by sitting in a circle that really helps to get to know our classmates. Perhaps you could do more of those things next time! Other than that everything was excellent! Mahalo Professor! More experiments and group project (competitions) - to find connections! To make us even more involved in in-class exercises. Keeping student sup to date on grades and encouraging online participation none I did not like Pinterest.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

He always tell to students what is the homeworks for next week so that students can prepare. Through emails and asking us during and after class. He prepared a lot for each class. He just does, you cant tell he's a good person. Always asking how we are and what not He was ALWAYS available for questions, and had a backup for technical difficulties of all sorts. Insured all assignments were easily assessable, in many formats. He didn't really have to. But he did say if we were to be absent to email him first so he could send us info on the lecture that day. He would give them or us time to work on our projects or assignments, have us break into groups and work with people, and would sometimes not have us take pop quizzes because of how well we did and what not. On top of that he is a very understanding teacher. As long as you email him and tell him whatʻs up, or go up and talk to him, youʻll be fine. He motivated us to do our best and was always up for a discussion, or if we had any questions, we were free to ask anytime. He asks us open questions about our lives sometimes. He encourage us to participate and he makes sure we stay involved in the classes. he was open to questions and encouraged participation

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes. His class is interesting. Yes, he's great teacher. Yes. I will definitely recommend to my friends. Because I learned a lot. Yes definitely, he gets you to think out side of the box Yes! His teaching style makes class fun, but you still learn a lot. Yes , it was an interesting class His course delivery was intriguing, and well thought out. I highly recommend Jennings. His lectures are fun and insightful. Yes I totally would. He is one of the best teachers Iʻve ever had and I really liked and enjoyed his class. I learned so much from this teacher and he had really made me be aware of the world. TOTALLY RECOMMEND! Yes. He is an awesome leader and inspiration. I have already recommended this class to basically everyone I know. It is probably the best class I have taken so far, in my entire life. It is an eye opener and make you think, reflect, question. Yes! Well the class itself is phenomenal. Best class ever had at an institution. Carl is the right person to lead the class also. Very deep man. yes, the course was really interesting and challenged the student to take a look at their own perceptions One of the best teachers you will ever have. (Second only to YODA!) (Carl: you can QUOTE ME ON THIS!) I tell other students that his class on Creative Thinking should be at the top of their list, regardless of their major. He should teach these classes to people who are not students, everyone in all walks of life would benefit from his classes. I also think that all teachers should copy his "potluck buffet" on the last day of class...this is a beautiful way to end.

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

No. His Creative thinking class is very refreshing and I learned a lot. I had great time in your class! I learn a lot and I could relax emotionally to think creatively. Super cool dude Great teacher, I wouldn't mind taking other courses he narrorates. IʻM REALLY GLAD I TOOK THIS CLASS. IVE LEARNED SO MUCH. PROFESSOR YOU ARE A REALLY GOOD TEACHER AND I HOPE THAT SOMEDAY IN THE FUTURE I WILL HAVE YOU AS A TEACHER AGAIN. MAHALO FOR ALL THE STUFF WE LEARNED! I really enjoyed this class. 13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

Jennings made learning to draw interesting and fun- even for a person who struggles with stick men. :) He is an AWESOME instructor. I never knew I had it in me to create art of such caliber. In my entire life before his class I had only drawn three things ever, but during my semester in his class I created something new every day. Those two hours-plus in his class were the only hours of my life that I felt I could really relax in my life. I think that had a lot to do with my discovery of my ability: That Carl Jennings creates an environment that is conducive to creating great art and totally inclusive of all kinds of people. He is also an accomplished artist himself, which allows him to take a view of your piece that is both objective and subjective simultaneously, and just enough of both so that you get really good advice on how to best proceed with a work. Carl Jennings strengthens my experience that KCC as a school is top rate. he is an amazing teacher and artist. one of the best art teachers i've ever studied from. Very calm, and clear speaker. Understands that we sometimes forget to bring needed materials and does not lose his "cool". Always emits positive vibes. He is very aware of each of his students and what their strong points are and weak ones are... He pays close attention to what their habits are! And try's to help them go beyond it! He was a very caring teacher, who has demonstrated his knowledge of art very well. Mr. Jennings was very fair in his criticism and always had something to say to improve one's work, even if that person was a phenomenal artist.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Less looking at other students' work- makes process more stressful for weak draw-ers. None. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had for any subject. nothing he is a great example of an ideal art teacher that someone can ask for. none? N/A I liked his class a lot, but personally I didn't really care for the idea of "projects to finish up as homework". While it helped me to get a better idea of time management, the assignments were part of the process that often caused me a lot of stress and weared down on me physically, leading to my gradual downfall on my 3rd portfolio (my final and collaboration drawings in particular), especially as I came closer to the end of the semester. I have realized by now that art takes a lot of time and effort, something that I did underestimate at first, even when I took art classes previously. Taking an art class in college is way different from the process that my art classes were done in grade school (high school and intermediate). Somehow, it seems more demanding, which I constantly had to keep in mind.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

Really explained principles behind techniques and guided/assisted along the way. By understanding student circumstances and being totally fair. He is able to stretch to meet students' life demands outside school without losing focus on the needs of the classroom. That is a very delicate balance, and he does very well. he always emailed me if there are things i needed help on. he responds instantly He made sure to offer any advice we may have been seeking in regards to our class work. He walks around the room and makes sure they know what is going on and if they know how to do the assignment He was willing to help students if they had questions or concerns. There was alwasy room to be a better artist. It just depended on how willing a student was going to go for him for help. That fact is probably my only regret in his class. Especially as I knew I was starting to struggle while working on my 3rd portfolio, I didn't go to like I should have.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Definitely. I went in the class unable to draw a straight line and now feel like I have the tools to draw a realistic image. ABSOLUTELY AND TOTALLY! He is one of the best I have ever had. He knows his stuff and is able to work with anyone of any skill level to help them grow as an artist. That guy is AWESOME. yes. he is awesome Yes, most definitely. He makes a great teacher and anyone interested in learning how to put onto paper, what you see in the world, would surely enjoy his course. Yes, his a great teacher Mr. Jennings is a great teacher that I would recommend to any student. In fact, it is because he is a great teacher that I opted to take him again for my upcoming Intro to Painting class. He is very encouraging to students, even those who are not that great in art, such as I. That fact alone was greatly appreciated. Honestly, I have to admit that I don't think I have a lot of self confidence in my art, always turning to another's opinion, but as necessary, he was there to encourage me to try anyway.

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

That guy is AWESOME! :) N/A I felt I learned a lot from Mr. Jennings both in art and about myself. Most notably, he helped me to identify a "comfort zone" in shading and values that I didn't realize I had until it popped up repeatedly. I tend to lean towards subtle shading, which does not always execute a product as well as those who produced works with higher contrast. Even at this point, I haven't fully let go of my "comfort zone", but in identifying it, I have tried to be a little bit more ambition and will continue to try to get out of my "comfort zone", which hopefully I can demonstrate that kind of artistic growth in his painting class.

Very knowledgeable about painting and art in general - it was great learning some art history and color theory along with painting techniques Knowledge of the course. He breaks things down so that it is easy to learn especially for beginners. He also is very patient and not overly critical. You can tell that he has taught for a number of years. He presented his subject in way that made it interesting and enjoyable for students. Really relaxed and not controlling on technique. He makes very good suggestions that are easy to understand. He is a very cool teacher, with a great perspective. His knowledge about art is admirable and I thoroughly enjoyed his class.

Maybe for the last project just do an outdoor study and the final project be something the student wants that demonstrates what has been learned in the semester. N/A

Each student got individual critique while working on and after completing a painting. By individually helping us with our painting. Even when i couldnt make it to class he was prompt at responding back. He never lost his patience or got frustrated with his students; instead he would always help them in any way he could. Gives good advice to help students and even helps after class hours. Providing office hours and constant support.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes. The class can be time consuming but you learn so much and he really helps you improve with specific suggestions for what you can paint, rather than just general advice. Yes. If someone has never taken a painting class he is very patient and explains techniques well. Yes, I definitely would! I learned so much in his class and really enjoyed him as a teacher. He was very knowledgeable in his field and would always make us laugh. Yes i would recommend Carl as he is a teacher who clearly cares about his students but does not overstep their creative choices. He encourages creativity and thinking!!! Great Speaker, Easy to learn and comprehend what he teaches. The thoughts, speech are easy to remember, he is willingly and most open- minded being versatile and willingly to aid the student. Even by selflessly sacrificing his own time to aid the student. Best Teacher Out of my semester HANDS DOWN! In this class, he kept it on the simple and basic side which is very important to get the basic idea and make it accessible to understand. Than it might be able to be tried in other areas. He is really professional at his subject. I can tell!! his personality is really good so we could follow him and most of his class is really fun and very up so class is not boring and we could join the class and sometime we do the activity that would different for exchange student so i really like his class. He is so friendly. Awesome speaker. very calmly explains everything He have tried to communicate with student about curriculum to make students pay attention to the class. And, his method of teaching is interesting for me. Most of them are my first experience. Was extremely knowledgeable about the subject and made it interesting and fun to learn. He's extremely knowledgeable in multiple arts. He generates relevant ideas quickly. He seems to often thinks spherically. Good explanation He teaches his subject in an engaging way, and attending his lectures is never dull. self confidence, knowledgeable, good listener, motivation, passion, strong communication skills, very creative and very understanding. His strength is that he teaches in a perfectly different style. I was really surprised when I first went his class. His presentations are very clear, and he also send us newspaper every week instead of us to buy text book.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

No changes, maybe have more creative thinking or related classes. Changes, No changes, No complaints, No chance would I want him to change anything he's Pretty good. not thing Nothing special. nothing really, awesome course, awesome teacher ... I could not find. Maybe if we were able to work on one of our major projects earlier in the semester rather than having them all within the last two weeks of class. Nothing really, just to further develop the structure of the class AND to request the school to avail a faster wifi connection in the building which he teaches it & expects students to present in. - no changes His lecture is really innovative. He doesn't need to change anything I guess. His class is my favorite class!

Reminded the students about them not doing the homework and gave extra credit assignments. Replying, questioning the students in a kind and selfless manner, willingly openingmindly ready to bend his back for the sake of others. If you have concerns or need help for projects, he will try to listen and help. his newsletter is really good to show it but some time is really hard to understand so... and also i think he make the sight same with student so he think about our mind and he also tell us his mind. He gave us pop quiz. always offers to help outside of class. He addressed even what would've just been the craziest ideas immediately and turn them into plausible ones on the fly. It made the students less prone to embarrassing themselves around each other. He also is one of the few instructors to almost always immediately respond to student emails. - He always stays after class ends to speak to his students if they approach him, and he gives clarification and suggestions when we ask. highly concern If he has some concerns, he directly ask students to give him some suggestions. He always seemed to want to improve his class. We can alway ask him questions and he e-mail me back so fast

I would definitely recommend Carl to students. He has the right attitude, he is knowledgable and doesn't care about useless things like the font you're using in your paper. It's all about ideas. Moreover he doesn't have a standardized approach. yes, I would, Yes. Yes I would. The class is so fun. i would like to recommend him to other student for me i am the exchange student sometime we could not understand but his class is really interested and fun and we could join really easy and we could think many way. and he gave us lot of information. His class is not too difficult and interesting. yes i do. he great at what he does. Absolutely yes!! when I start taking this class, I already recommend it to my friends. Its curriculum is fresh and interesting. Fun teacher. Made sure his information was interesting and relevant. Thankfully, he's just one of those teachers that can make a course one you won't dread going to. He always stays presentable yet it's easy to relate to him as any type of student on a casual friend level. - He was one of the best teacher I have ever had. I would like to say him really thank to teach me. It was really amazing that I could be his student and I will never forget what he has taught us. Good person! Good teacher!

I mention this class to everyone I run into on campus. The class had tons of interesting information of different kinds: lectures, presentations, videos and movies, and exercises like goal setting, reframing, "get lost" exercise and more. For me this class is more valuable than many classes I've taken, and I've been studying for 18 years non-stop and it's my second degree, so I know what I'm talking about :) admired the greek-western phil aspect of creativity, eugenics the talk about the age of enlightenment not thing Thank you Carl~ Mr. Jennings is right, this course on "How To Think" should be offered much earlier in student life. This class is just not fit on me. It is kind of boring. Sorry! Great Teacher

yes, even if you don't enjoy art after taking his class i'm sure people can learn some new techniques on how to draw. there is no pressure on being able to draw good, so that's a relief GET Yes, he is really nice and gives you suggestions on your drawings in a positive and constructive manner. He is never insulting and has a great accent. Yes, because I learned a lot in his class.

he knows the subject matter well. and suggestions regarding to students paintings help improve painting skills. the smaller studies we did in class before the main projects were helpful. 1. Introduce new ideas often 2. let student involve the critic comfortably. He is very helpful and teaches very well. Knowing the subject. He's very precise and knows exactly what he wants us to learn. He's helpful and very patient when we don't exactly understand the concept of certain things. He's also friendly and makes the classroom atmosphere easy to work in! Very kind person and easy going atmosphere. It was a very relaxed and chill atmosphere for a class, even a painting class. He knew what he was talking about and was able to show us. Talked to us about interesting facts and history about different paintings and painting styles which was fun to know. As the assignments changed, we learned the history of how it came to be. Showing us examples and techniques helped a lot. Explaining why we were doing things helped us to avoid a lot of frustration. Learning how to make our own colors was awesome. Something I've never even tried to do. It was a pain at first but I felt it was an awesome thing to understnad color by the middle of the first project. Well organized. And his knowledge is outstanding. and he's good at explain things too. Creative. Mr. Jennings's major how can student get to the right of colours to painting and technique how to mixed the colours.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

i dint really care for the powerpoint presentaions, they seemed too long, maybe alittle shorter, i belive to learn about paintings, it is more affective by acually doing it. n/a Hmm, nothing at all. The only downfall of the class was that the art rooms got rained in on which caused us to lose valuable time for out paintings. Nothing to suggested to Mr, Jennings everythings is good enoughs.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

he would go around the class and ask if help is needed, during class. and able quick in responce with emails. He talked to us one on one and told us what we needed to work on. Took the time to talk and understand the situation. He's constantly walking around the class giving us pointers and telling us how to improve our painting techniques. He also emailed us frequently to remind of us important due dates for our project. so needless to say, he wanted us to do well and get the most out of his course. He talked with students one-on-one about their work and demonstrated how they could improve. Opened the room to people on days we didnt have class. Was understanding about set backs in due dates. Talked to each of us and helped us with all of our paintings seperately which helped us sharpen our skills. Was availiable to provide information and help at anytime. He talks about students' work with every single one. and give very valuable advices. Mr. Jennings's concerned to student as maybe student did not have enough time to finish of the painting, or didn't understand how to painting of the objects and choosed or mixed of the right colours.

yes, the class is fun and definatly gives the basics into painting, which can help students who are interested in art to move forward and a good starting point. even if you dont like art i think students can enjoy it and learn form it. Yes, because I like the way he teaches us very much. Yes, he makes everything very easy to understand. He works one on one with students and helps out as much as he can. yes, good teacher and knows the material well. Yes, yes, yes! I've had this drawing class prior and that's the reason why I sought him out for my painting course. Yes. I learned a lot and felt the class was well set up and taught well. No one had anything bad to say about him. Yes. I think he has a lot of things that people can take. NOT actual object I mean LOL. He creative Idea, knowledge. etc. yes, I will if I know who is want or interesting to the painting. Because, he's kinds, not to stricts, and easy to understand when he's gave explainations.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

super nice! Even with all the disruption from the flooding, Prof Jennings kept us right on track. When the hell do we get back to the Koa Building? What a disruption that was! The roof was leaking for years and you guys waited too long to fix it, so the students lose out. Jennings did the best he could, despite the roof problems. Highly knowledgeable in the subject matter, talks with each individual about progress on projects and offers suggestions, tried to utilize more modern tools (online art blog) he's very easy going and knows the material Thorough content knowledge, sights to push the threshold of contemporary art. Very personable and always open for a philosophical conversation, where other teachers would certainly not be. His major strengths would have to be his experience outside of the classroom. He's very clear in what he wanted from us and what he was teaching. He encouraged us to think for ourselves being that independent thinking was a skill that we needed in this class. He offered his artistic eye and criticism on our work which benefited us. I think I might confuse with this class and intro painting LOL Painting he tried to teach that students can learn perspective, and how to make, I mean draw realistic.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Don't be so nice. He's too nice. Explain projects a bit more clearly and establish art blog doing the critiques differently. it was like being put on the spot when another person was presenting. it was like having to tell someone there work isn't good or that they should've done it differently when maybe thats there style. A bit less emphasis on being absolutely free, when there are actually a slight few guidelines which can morph into very constricting rules which must be met. Or rather more emphasis explaining that it is not his guidelines that are most important, but the student's own development and discovery of his/her own technique through those guidelines. This is my personal reaction, and may very well have not been a concern for any other students. He's flaw-free. No changes suggested.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

Lots of personal attention and instruction. He welcomed our ideas, like even when we wanted to go to the museum. And he gave us extra chances for extra credit. You can tell he wanted us to succeed. Easy to get a hold of, talks to each individual Always seen around campus, and readily available for any questions or concerns. Also very accessible through the web. By pushing us to work and think harder and to create anything that we possibly could. That to me shows that he wanted to push as artists

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

sure! i would! because he is knowladgeable. Oh, for sure, yes! You can tell he loves teaching. And he's so funny. He knows a lot. Sure; the class allows a lot of free reign with projects and lets students push their creativity. Carl helps students to hone their ideas into reality by offering input and tips. Absolutely. An excellent instructor with a refreshingly objective eye for art Yes because he's flaw free and he knows his stuff. He's patient, well-versed, and encouraging.

He's so open to ideas and doesn't patronize students or treat us like we're stupid. Provoking thought, he would do well as a philosophy professor. Carl helps people learn by providing creative outlets. Very clear voice and always has interesting material to teach to the students. Very astute and well updated on the content knowledge. As well as a good grasp on the happenings around town pertaining to the content of the course Though, the physical environment was bad and the subject can be abstract at times. He made do with the best he's got. He is very clear and looks at things in many angles. He always keeps the student's attention by relating the material being taught to experiences that he's had or ones that all of us have had. Also when things don't work out as they should or is expected to, he is quick to address the problem and makes the necessary changes to better suit the class. His flexibility overall I think lets the students enjoy the class more. More freedom to do things how we want to and more encouragement to do things abstractly and think outside of the box as long as we can provide an explanation and connect the dots with what weâ??ve learned. He is a likable teacher. He's awesome and very understanding. His lectures are engaging and he's very knowledgeable about the subject. He really knows his stuff and cares deeply about his class and his students. His interest in the subject and enthusiasm with which he teaches.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Give him a raise. Applying more psychology to the class, I know it's not your strong point but it would help a lot. Pick a different classroom, the desks are not comfortable, I think we would benefit from tables. I do not have any suggestions. I really enjoyed the class. Perhaps better organization of when and how the projects are presented, and their due dates. Could use a longer class slot, to cover more information and eliminate some of the crucial knowledge that students must hunt for online. Get a classroom with more lighting and windows. Encourage more dialogue. Another class for creativity would be nice. And maybe mire small projects. I have no suggestions. He already makes the changes if necessary. To start the project information earlier and due dates. The rows of desks were really irritating and closed off for learning I like a more science or psychology emphasis. Spend more time discussing current research and findings. Maybe go over the readings and various models in more depth. Hard to find a balance while "keeping it real" for the artists in the class.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

He was always there if we needed help. He's a good listener, and always welcomes emails, etc. He spent time every class making sure everyone knew what was going on. He allways listens! Carl Jennings was always easy to get ahold of outside of class, which makes it easier to succeed. Lots of extra credit opportunities, always welcomed emails if there were any questions or concerns E-mail availability and Weekly reflections Always there for us. He makes us do weekly reflections of the class and what we thought of it. Generally, this is just so he can make sure he is teaching the class well but also to address any concerns that we may ask him through these reflections if we have any. He also gives the class a heads up on the projects that will be due and the material that needs to be looked over before the next class through emails and laulima announcements. Always being available after class, with a pleasant and approachable demeanor.

He's great; yes, I would recommend him. YOu always learn so much. Yes, he's cares about the field a lot. If he knew more about it, that would help out the class a lot. YES! Yes, i certainly would. They say the professor makes the class, and i really enjoyed having Carl as a professor. Most definitely. He excites and opens a part of the brain (or mind) that you would seldom if not ever experience in a class setting. So much content that raises questions about everything pertaining to life. Extremely interesting Yes. Challenging Of course!!!! Because he is interesting and mind opening. I would definitely recommend Carl to other students because he knows what he's doing. Having lots of experience as a teacher, as well as knowing the subject well, he knows how to make students work hard and enjoy it too. What's more? The lessons are never boring. If I were able to take his classes again; especially this one, I would. I wanted to create more or do exercises of creating in different ways. Hands on I guess. I am a visual learner. I'm glad he shaved off his beard. Very understanding, interesting professor. A highly interesting person, and an excellent instructor When announcing projects, I suggest doing the announcements earlier than what you did. I love him as a teacher and respect him as a person. Out of all these years that I have been a student, I have never learned as much as I have from him. And more importantly, on things that actually matter and can easily be applied in everyday life. He truly is the best teacher Iâ??ve ever met by far. He made me keep thinking differently and creatively although I'm a little old. Also the class made me feel refresh and young through doing homework. Too many to list! I learned to collaborate, be patient with others, how to think about new ideas, how to be more creative, what creativity is and isn't. I met cool students, and learned so much. Every day was more stuff. The projects were good, too because we could do practically anything we felt passionate about. I felt like we had lots of input of how we wanted to learn, too. It was never boring. He had speakers and an assortment of ways to learn. I think I have a much better understand of creativity. The text was excellent. I gained a lot of confidence in myself. Thanks, Carl! - A fellow astronomer Understanding how relative everything is. I wish he spent more time going over Relativism in the class. The material and class in general was very interesting, makes you want to go to class everyday. Certain information, such as eugenics, that I had previously absolutely no knowledge of Reading material and the blog. How it has helped my mind, spirit and body has connected much more and in much more ways. Everything. The entire course has really opened me up to be more aware of the world around me and have a better understanding of it all. It has not only taught me on how I can be more creative but how I can apply it in every aspect of my life. Most importantly, it's taught me to be open. That ability to consider the possibilities, that ability to be flexible and tolerant of things that I might have difficulty wrapping my mind around will allow me to be more successful in whatever I do in life. Projects and ways of thinking. The most valuable about the course is thinking creatively and changing the way I think about things, and it made me solve problems more easily. I think understanding what high acheivers have in common, even when this goes against standard ops, is valuable. I now feel I have information to back me up when I want to go against the grain and follow my own bent. One single helpful insight came from Michael Palin who said that increments of 2 hours worked best, with a half-hour of that being just mental unwind. I now better appreciate the processes of my oft rebellious, sometimes odd, but creative friends.

Carl did a great job in laying out course work and assignments. For a beginning art class I really liked how he introduced everything for everyone clearly. He also made things interesting and was a personable teacher. I really enjoyed to take this class. I learned a lot of things from him, but he is like hardheded. i reskky like to teach his teaching stile, but he dosent have flexbility sometimes. He knows the subject matter extremely well and more importantly, teaches it well. Passonate about what he does. Listen to each student. Takes time to help out each student during or after class. Teaches specifically into details He gave people advice on their drawings and was there to help if you needed the help. knows the subject area and is very understanding of students talents. he is also concerned for your make up exams and helps us make it up He makes himself very clear on what he wants the class to do in his lessons, giving demonstrations help a lot too. He is also very helpful in giving students advice on how to improve their work. He is great at explaining how to do the work, and constantly spends one on one time with every student offering advice. Good variety of assignments. He knows the subject area VERY well and he gives a lot of helpful suggestions for students to improve their artwork. He gives us ideas on ways of looking at things when we cannot grasp certain details that are essential in the completion of our artwork. Mr. Jennings strengths as an instructor lies in explaining and teaching the course material. His examples and notes were easy to understand and follow. He is also very patient towards his students. I think his background and all the years of his teaching and involvement in art was his major strength. He's witty and was very thorough in his explanation about the topics and skills that were discussed in the classroom. He was also very funny. At first, he came off as a bit intimidating but as the semester carried on, he was a joy to be around. He's thoughtful, intuitive and very eloquent which made the communication and understanding better for the students. Teaching the fundamentals of art to students in a method that is easy to understand and implement. Very thorough in his explanations, & also gives great advices.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

I dont think he needs to change anything. Some of the assignments in the beginning of the semester were not my favorite, but I learned a lot and enjoyed the class. Nothing really. Maybe be a little less strict? No chances, everything was good Instead of turning in portfolio 2 times in the course, to turn it in 5 or so times, that way its easier to keep up I recall one time where he forgot to mention about materials which was difficult for the other students who didn't bring them in. But then again, it was the students fault for not being prompt like he asked us to in the beginning of the semester. But a reminder wouldn't hurt :) No changes in particular. none.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

When I came in late, Carl Jennings helped me catch up with the assignment. He was always available for anyone out of class time if you needed help or had any questions. He always would check on students and didn't make anyone feel down if they were doing something incorrect. I learned how to drowing, so I was really enjoyed to learn about art from our teacher. He went around the classroom always checking to see if we ever needed any help at all. And he would correct us if we were wrong and explain clearly what we needed to fix. When student seemed lost or didnt understand what to do, he would come over and go one on one to help you understand it better. Yes, he was helpful and showed a lot of concern. He comes by and gives everyone a little advice on how to improve their art work. If there is someone that has other problems, he hears them out as well and helps work it out. He constantly advices students on what they are doing right, and how they can improve their work. He offers comments and suggestions, and lets us know how we're doing in the class. advice giving If a student was having problems with their assignment Mr. Jennings would explain and show us physically on what needed to be fixed. Whenever a student missed class, he would inform them about the missing material or what went on during class time. He made sure we understood that it was pertinent to keep up with the class and he helped us by guiding us through the right way. By giving critique to students whenever they need it, as well as providing an environment that will assist in the artistic process. He gives constructive criticism on our work, which helps us get to the next level.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes I recommend Carl Jennings to students because he is excellent instructor Yes I would, he did a good job introducing art and beginning stages especially to people that may or may not have ever done art before. Yes, because I learned so much from him. I already like drawing and I have had previous art classes before but everything I learned from him further benefited me, even if I already learned it. Yes, he is great at what he does. His methods of teaching great and different. He kept the atmosphere in class at a great calm level. I will. But maybe not for students who take this class for fun. I enjoyed very much. Yes I would recommend him because he knows how to do the work and he is patient. Yes I would recommend him to students because his instructions were nice and clear. He's well experienced in the subject as well so we all know that he knows what he's doing. Yes, my art skills have improved greatly since taking his class! yeah he is good at teaching Yes, definitely. He's artistry is what many students need to improve not only their skills but ther performance in looking at things itself. I would highly recommend Mr. Jennings to students. As said before his is patient, gives solid and easy to understand what he is getting across in his lessons and is nice. I would definitely recommend him. He was awesome in that he critiqued the work fairly but if you have openness and acceptance, you can use his wise words and apply it to your work. Carl Jenning's knowledge of the subject, experience in the various painting styles, and assisting students. very gentle with students very clear instructions. Caring, motivator, and always there to help out. He knows how to talk to you about your art without offending you and gives great advice on how to improve. Carl Jennings is a great teacher, i think his strength is that he is nice and funny and makes it a relaxing learning atmosphere. He knows the subject area well.

None that I am aware of. nothing no changes. None I would like it if he passed out a paper for each painting telling us what aspects he is looking for and what will be graded, it makes it harder when we have no idea why we ended up with a low grade, i would enjoy this class more if i could know that there was a grading rubric. If necessary, he had open office hours to ask questions, give constructive criticism to students in need of assistance, and demonstrate examples of how to perform the objective painting assignment. he would come to students and talk to them often check in on students. He emails us if needed , lets us know if we are lacking motivation. He constantly viewed our working process and gave video critiques as well as a grade, which I really appreciated. He always makes sure to help each student along and give us pointers on how to do it. Was available when help was needed

Yes, I would highly recommend Carl Jennings to any student looking forward to painting, drawing, and other courses he teaches. He is aware of his students progress and wants to encourage him/her to perform their optimum best. yes. very gentle with students yes. He has creative way of teaching Definitely. He is a talented instructor. Yes because of his teaching style and knowledge of the subject. I really enjoyed painting because I understood the many saturations, values, and contrasts of colors needed to take account of to illustrate an illusion of the subject you are portraying on your canvas. Carl has great eye for color. None. He is always willing to provide us with some cheaper options when we cant afford the supplies. He is also very understanding and helpful if anyone has missed a class or come in late.

Carl Jennings's major strengths as a teacher are his clear passion for art, how he clearly explains and shows the different methods of drawing, and his ability to give helpful and constructive criticism, without sounding negative. Carl Jennings displays a myriad of strengths not only as a teacher but also as an ethical human being. His successful teaching style (explanation, critical thinking time for all students to try their hand, and the do's and don'ts) allows students to engage themselves into real world thinking. Mr. Jennings is also equipped with skillfully prepared PowerPoints with interesting trivial tidbits that make the class entertaining. The cozy community-esque teaching environment strikes down any possible fear that shy students may have, therefore decreasing the amount of unasked questions. Mr. Jennings can be compared to a tide pool - not too pushy, but chock full of information you can submerge yourself into while taking as much time as you like to explore. Great knowledge of material, patience, approachability & humor. He really knew the class material well and had others mingle and get along with each other Very expressive, easy to understand, easy to relate to, and extremely knowledgeable about the subject. 14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

None. One of the concerns I have is that a round cylinder barrel should be included in the materials list. From my experience, I found carrying the bulky sketchpad to and from home very vexing. The precious pages you've worked on in class were prone to rip and tear and the harmful elements of nature. The second suggestion I have would ease a student's life by a tenfold. If it were possible, the university should set up a feature which allowed the professor's emails about the due dates and assignments to be sent via text message to students automatically. Although this proposal seems quixotic, this is also a fleeting chance to advance this college into the modern technological world many other colleges around the world are adapting to. He showed concern for students by giving individual constructive criticism without putting down the artist and his or her work. Mr. Jennings genuinely cares for his students, although he refuses to agree to this in the beginning of the course. From emails about due dates and well prepared course schedules, he is sure to be a listening ear to student's who need it. He went to all of us and pointed out what we needed to improve on and complimented us to encourage us to do the best we can On his rounds around the class, he took the time to give each student personalized advice in regards to the current assignment. From personal experience, he was very accommodating when I hurt my hand

Yes, I would recommend Carl Jennings to other students because I can see an improvement in my drawing skills. I feel more confident with drawing and using different mediums. Mr. Jenning's course is rigorous - requiring a 10 minute sketch everyday and many in class projects that take up hours to complete. A critical quality one must possess to be successful in this course is high concentration. You must be able to sit down and work for 3 hours to be able to produce quality work. Yes, for the strengths listed above. Yes, if anyone wants to go into art and make sure they got the material down right, Carl makes sure you get it Absolutely. I feel as though I learned a tremendous amount from this course, and had a great time doing it. Yes. Awesome professor!

Extremely well skilled in subject matter, excellent explanation of techniques. He's good at what he does and is always helping his students. He knows his subject Carl has an amazing way of communicating techniques to the class. I left class everyday feeling as if I had learned something that I could apply to my work on a regular basis from that moment on. I think his major strength is that he really has an eye for art. He looks at the student's strengths and weakness. He is not afraid to point out the truth, thus the student really learns a lot. Really well versed in the course he teaches! Absolutely everything about his teaching method is perfect. Drawing, Teaching and good with students He knows his stuff. He's also very helpful and doesn't ever put anyone down based on their abilities. Carl's strength lies with his impeccable and unimpeachable intergrity and character. Mr. Jennings will be helpful and professional even to a fault, but will not pander nor manifest favoritism. Down-to-earth, friendly, funny, knowledgeable, helpful. clear explanations on lectures, assignment and exams. Also well organized lecture style Carl is an amazing teacher because he seems to be very natural at it. He makes the students feel very comfortable because he is relaxed and patient but he also pushes you to do better. He gives good constructive criticism and encouragement and always has something interesting to say. He has a good balance between teaching the basics and allowing for creative expression.

none give more advice to the students when drawing. None Nothing!!!! He's amazing None whatsoever. Softer chairs It's neither here nor there because of time constraints and the fact that IT IS an introductory class, but if I had to suggest something; it would be that there would be more coverage in figure drawing and in-depth look at the propensity of the particular materials. walked around the class and gave us advice He walks around class during assignments and guides us through the exercises. He made it known that he was available outside of class to help as well. Helped when we had questions or talked to us when he noticed ways we could better our drawings One of the ways concern was shown was through honest critiques in front of the class. He made a point to mention that each person needed to detach themselves from their work to be able to constructively take criticism he or other students may have had. He is approachable and always clear with instructions. By helping them out Takes an interest in outside art work. Helped us with our drawing and what way we could improve. He would help everyone with their drawings, give feedback, and make suggestions to better our drawings. I don't get the question..., is there hand-holding in college? He would often walk around the classroom to answer questions and offer suggestions. yes, i would because i learned a great deal from this one class on how to draw properly Yes. Without a doubt. This was simply the finest art class I have ever taken thus far. Carl is an amazing teacher and artist who was very insiping to learn from. Yes. cause you will become a better artist after taking his class. Yes I would recommend him to other people because he's a great professor Yes, because of his ability to relay information in a clear precise interesting way. Yes, I would recommend him. yes, he teaches student individually, he brings out questions which let you think more about. you can know how to improve your work by his teaching. YES!!! He really helps his students sharpen their skills Absolutely. Not just because he knows the subject, not just because he's incredibly thorough when teaching the subject, and not just because he's incredibly patient with the students. The primary reason I'd recommend him to other students, is because he seems to have this amazing ability to teach a class overall, but still teach individuals in a way that anybody can understand. Absolutely one of my favorite teachers I've ever had in my entire life. Yes! If you cant draw good he'll help you to draw good. If not he makes you feel like your doing good as long as you do your best and try hard. Yes, he knows how to teach all the material without it all being overwhelming. He's very fair and gives constructive criticism. Yes, emphetically! Yes, I would wholeheartedly recommend him as an instructor. As an absolute beginner in drawing, it was hard at times, but I felt I learned a lot of good techniques. It was a really fun class. yes, because his class was well organized and had so much fun being in the class Yes, highly recommended! He is a great instructor for any level of drawing and you will definitely learn a lot if you are willing to put in the time.

good teacher His philosophies on art spoke to me deeply in that although this was a drawing class, his words on perspective and the way we see things, as well as technique reach beyond the boundaries of artistic mediums. he's a great teacher. And tries to help the students do better. Best teacher Ive had a KCC He is a really cool guy I think the previous comment says it all. Really nice guy. Listens to good music! Easy going. Funny He is quite knowledgeble about Brit Pop. He was so gracious to grade my exam drawing the same day and give me pointers on it, so that I could turn it in with the NMA admissions portfolio. Awesome instructor! I'm so glad I was able to take drawing with him.

Personable and engaging manner. How he explains clearly everything Know how to teach and to communicate and be around students All of the things mentioned above. Also, he showed us some of his own work and he has the skills to back up what he's teaching. His focus and the determination to represent and to uphold the course's curriculum as stated. 21. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...

My ability to draw things that I'd never thought I'd be able to. Portraits of people in particular. I did a drawing of my niece for an assignment that was the best drawing I'd ever done of anything. how fun it was. Because of what I learned from drawing. I think I'll remember it by the works I have finished. The art I have learned will stick in my mind. Because it is a hands on thing. his last name, jennings... i like this last name, it's interesting. ;xP My heightened skill in drawing!!! How much I've learned and improved in such a short period of time. the improvement of my drawings I'd never been able to draw an accurate portrait and this class helped a lot. It surprised me when I saw what I'd draw at the end. Also, the people in the class were very interesting and friendly. The bloody wooden horses that I had to sit on for hours on end! The techniques learned, fun and creative atmosphere, nice classmates and prof. how to draw the shadow and squeezing eyes. The little things that can go overlooked that can improve a drawing tremendously. Such as going dark on the eyes and hair, pushing the values further, making sure you are really looking at your subject. Also the things that we talked about related to art but not necessarily related to class. Being able to have access to this type of information from a working artist is so valuable to me and the candid little pieces of advice about being an artist really stick with me.

22. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?

this class has helped me improve on drawing proportions I'm pursuing an art degree in photography. I've been shooting for over 10 years and this class has helped me to see in different detail. I'm also an avid musician and art is an integral part of my life. The things I take with me from this class will always be a part of my overall creative expression. technique of drawing and different ways to look at objects. I think I learned how to discipline myself, to focus more on the details, to be patient, and to learn from mistakes. This course really helped to "shape-up" my skills. Carl is a great teacher and gives great advice. He has a really good eye for art. that I fell back in love with drawing The drawing skills that learned from the course. Getting better at drawing. Learning things that can help me to improve my drawings. Learning the right way of doing things I learned a lot of techniques that I really liked and also didn't like. I also got to use lots of different mediums as well and found there's more than just pencil or paint. The strongest aspect that was imparted to me from the course was the ability to measure and to place accurately the composition and its relational aspect. Meaning, I can now draw without things looking wonky and askew. Well, for one the required daily sketch seemed a pain at first, but in the end it only wound up helping me become more skilled. Then, slowing down to analyze things and staying focussed on task for longer than 10 seconds. :) how difficult to draw realistically. Learning to give and receive constructive criticism. I think it is a really important skill that sometimes goes overlooked in art classes. I really appreciate getting feedback on things I need to improve on because it helps me to make my work better and to learn to not take things personally, which is very important in being an artist.

Best art teacher ever! i like his gentle vioce. You guys should replace the soda machines on campus with iced tea dispensary. Cool iced tea poured right into your own container for a fraction of the price. Cheers!

He has a lot of knowledge about this area. And he shares his experiences. He knows the course and is well informed about arts. Carl is a really intelligent, well-spoken communicator - verbally and visually. He organizes the course and student in a way that will be very helpful beyond school. He is respectful, understanding, patient and great sense of humor. I've had a lot of art professors and mentors outside of Hawaii. I think Carl is the best of them. Loved the video presentations and the one-to- one video crits! he teaches us in a very good pace through out the semester He has a lot of knowledges of painting and it helped me so much.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Assignments and grade is not very clear I would have liked to see his sabbatical in the full length of class time. I would have liked to see a presentation on one of his bodies of art work. A field trip off-campus to see contemporary art together? The class is already great as it is. Carl clearly makes it so. more projects in the class I wanted to see his painting more.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

He walked around the classroom to see if the students have a trouble. He checked in with us. Shared materials on other artists. Helped us determine things that would be helpful to us in art making. Discussion. A written form of assignments were helpful to the verbal discussion on what assignments will be. he would immediately show and point out the problem by talking individually with the students about their paintings, what needs to be edited, etc. He often tried to talk to me to help.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes. He always give me good advices to improve my painting, and also he taught me a new technique. I'm not sure, he is too much in his own world, the feedback is inconsistent some times is is very present another not. I would highly recommend him! He is just all around a superb combination of creativity, teaching and communicating skills, and no ego issues seem to get in his way in mentoring us. yes because he is an understandable teacher yes Yes, his advise was always appropriate.

I've enjoyed him as a prof so much, I hesitate to sign up for a class he is not teaching. Please keep the same time to presentation for each students.

Experience to think deeply about the theme of painting and execute it. I like the course and the Assignments Organizing us on deadlines with themes. This is a sorely needed skill -balancing creativity with focused direction. Also writing assignments. His presentation, before each project, helped me so much.

20. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?

The question to me is the way he teaches. The end of the semester we had 3 classes with slide shows and visiting the cafe on campus when we really needed the time to finish our course projects. During open critique sessions he said very little but then graded down on final products that he had not really helped to fine tune for the final form the project took. Neutral, apathetic responses in class critiques. Group mid critique. I wanted to with whole class.

the good advices from Carl. How he taught most of the course did not inspire me artistically. Carl's presentations and Carl. (And Catherine's painting that looked to be clearly about masturbation.) His advise I got during my last painting.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

Openness and ability to criticize students in very productive ways. He's not judgemental and won't paint on your canvas unless absolutely necessary, which is rare. He's also very attentive to students; doesn't walk out for an hour while everyone's painting. Carl never seems to get tired of answering questions, either. No question is dumb or unnecessary, and we always get a sound answer. His knowledge of painting (art, in general) his endless, and he's never boring, which is always nice. Carl Jennings knows his material and explains it very well. His approach to painting has a progression that fit all student style of learning. He uses much of his own experiences as examples to emphisize the point he is trying to get across to the student. He is also very easy to talk to. Art knowledge How to teach painting skills Good atmosphere in the class Very professional as a teacher Lots of strengths- seems very knowledgeable and proficient and is very good at communicating with us and giving constructive criticism and advice. I got a lot out of this class- I learned everything I hoped to and then some. Will try to take another class from this teacher.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

Attentive, shares his love for painting, and is very flexible to student's individual needs. Carl has a very caring approach to teaching. His critiques of students art work is always positive and constructive. When talking about the weak points of an art piece, Carl talks about the strengths within those weak section then proceeds to explains and/or demonstrates how the painting could be made stronger with color or technique or both. He came to each students to teach skills and give advices. In our critiques, in advice and commentary- even in talking down and safely and calmly handling a disturbed student who was disrupting our class.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes, definitely. Of course I'd recommend him. Yes, Carl works to get to know each student and helps to develope individual style. Of course yes!! He is very professional. For all the reasons above : an art class should help you learn specific things and also inspire you to keep learning growing and creating- and this class did all of those things.

Have a wonderful, great sabbatical, AND DON'T FORGET TO COME BACK!!! Carl has sparked my interest in painting. He has given me a greater appreciation of the fine art of painting both pass and present. I found him to be a wealth of knowledge and will to share it all. I found Carl very professional in his handling of students and of this class when a difficult situation arose. Thank you so much! I have learned a lot in this class. have more group activities None need better seating, butt and back hurts. no changes. I like the way he teaches. He makes it fun! More days in a semester.

through communication Giving advice or answers whenever students need or ask something, and he welcomes it as well. gives pointers here and there I think he would ask any of the students who are falling behind in class. He never ignores students who ask for help. He will go into as much detail as possible so the student therefore knows the problem. Carl even sped up and rearranged the curriculum so that it would meet with our New Media Arts deadline.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

yes, good teaching skills. Yes. His class is fun and satisfying as we learn actual techniques, not just drawing something as we like, and he helps us to learn and improve these techniques. Yes and No Yes: to those who really want to know how to draw No:to those who are real beginners, because having to draw everyday will be a very difficult task. yes, because he's not like most professors who (no offense) are boring, and doesn't have the time to help the students. but I like the way he teaches drawing because it's like he forms a bond between the students, and he likes to make jokes in class too. He also goes around the room and tells us what we can improve on, rather than just telling us what to draw and sit down the entire time. Yes. The class is a great learning experience

Very helpful no facial hair and with facial hair makes a big difference. Even though the semester isn't over yet, I enjoyed being in your class alot because even though I'm not much of a drawer, and even though some of the drawings we did were a challenge, you made the class very fun.

individual constructive criticizm, good personality Get the students interested in Art, no matter whether their major is art or not. pencil measure thing. bottle drawing most helpful: he would walk around the students every so often to see how much we progressed. Also, if one of the students are having trouble, he would actually show us how to make the drawing better. The way he geniunly cares that his students learn to draw.

nothing None coloring/shading it's important , but it is hard. sometime without it looks better. none.

I enjoyed the class a lot, and it was actually more than I expected. I like what I learned in the class- -all those techniques and the way to see things etc. Suffering from back aches while drawing, putting effort into drawing.. receiving a C for a grade will be kind of unsatisfying from a student's perspective. His openness and obvious concern for students stand out. Also, I think that his understanding of the philosophical background that informs the debates in art is very effective. I wonder if the students might have benefited from reading more primary sources in those debates. Knowledge of contemporary art and previous art movements; clarity of instruction. Knows subject area and many other subjects that he uses in relation to art, which creates a great learning environment a knowledgeable insightful and truthful person Knowledge and ability to teach. He pushes students in a way that makes them want to explore and learn. He is very knowledgeable in his subject and can speak clearly and with great authority. If he does not know an answer, he seeks to find it immedietley. He is an inspiration as a teacher!

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

I'm currently struggling through the last assignment. I like the idea of leaving much of the assignment up to chance, but one suggestion might be to make sure that what the students wrote seems plausible. Unfortunately, plausibility is a rather difficult thing to determine..... none No none. he has it down well.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

Encouraged participation of students, checked up on student's progression in assignments. Asked questions, asked each student their thoughts and input assure we we're alright academically when confused philisophically and physically when sick He was very flexible with time and assignments, and open to discussion. by trying to involve them in class discussion, by helping them come up with ideas, brainstorming.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Absolutely. I already have given my experience in previous courses. This course is very different, however, and I think I'd only suggest it to people who are ready for it. Yes, for above reasons. yes. I have learned more from Carl than any ever teacher ever!! Yes, if you want to open your mind Yes; he's great. Yes! For all of the reasons I have already mentioned.

I hope there are more teachers in the field as dedicated as Carl. His classes are interesting, inspiring, and encourage me to think outside the box. great class Thank you, again, Carl, for another great semester. I learned sooo much.

I think that question 3 is problematic for this kind of course - I think a "well organized" course on creativity is a bit of an oxymoron. It was appropriately organized, but that means that it wasn't as organized as other classes. Question 6 has a similar issue: the value of clarity and efficiency run counter to a course that focuses on randomness and creativity. WONDERFUL class and WONDERFUL teacher! Way beyond my expectations!

I feel that Mr. Jennings needs no changes. NO NONE None Nothing at all.

Mr. Jennings would always check up on everyone's work and give constructive feedback and great ideas and suggestions. by talking to us about how we are doing all the time! And checking on us! He worked with students individually to help them bring out the best of the artworks. He was also very understanding and encouraging when students had a difficult time with classwork.

I would strongly recommend Mr. Jennings to students because he knows a lot about art and he is always there when a student needs help with their work. YES EVERYONE should take his class!!!!!! I would recommend Carl Jennings to other students because he is a great teacher who challenges students to strive for their best and encourages them to think outside the box. Highly recommend because teaching methods are open yet fundamental. I had Carl my second semester at KCC and was in his Beginning Drawing class, and was very excited to see there was an opening this past semester for his Intermediate Drawing Course. If any of my friends or acquaintance's mentioned wanting to go into an art course, Carl was/is the only teacher I would recommend for Drawing classes.

Mr. Jennings is a great art professor. I really appreciate being able to learn from Carl this semester! I am taking his class in the summer!

I liked that everything in this class is very hands on. He encouraged people to improved themselves better to drawing. Knowledge of drawing techniques and his ability to adjust to each students skill level. Quality instruction and calrity Able to explain art concepts well, helps you to improve your drawing. He really knows his stuff and he knows what kind of advice to give too all students with different strengths and weaknesses without hurting their pride or feelings. He also has a sense of humor, so that's a plus! very concerned about student's work and progress. Caring for the students. Everything! His lectures were interesting, class activities were challenging yet fun, had a great knowledge about Art, and teaching style was very much liked. He also has a friendly and humorous personality making the class atmosphere fun to work in.

He helped me remember an assignment i had missed when i was sick that i had forgotten i didnt turn in. always willing to help Reminders that missing class is bad for you in art; you will fall behind if you miss classes. He just knew what to say to everyone and he's there to help if you need any. very strongly. keep remanding important issues that students need to know regarding grades. Teaching thoroughly during the class with detailed information. He walks around the class constantly giving feed back and after every class asks if we have any questions and concerns. He is also available before and after class, too.

He's a good instructor and he really knows his knowledge and areas of drawing. I would recommend him to students if they are very serious about drawing. Yes because he knows what hes doing and how to teach the subject. yes great teacher and enjoyed going to class Yes, helped me improve my drawing ability, confidence using darks Yes! Beyond reason, he is really laid back and funny! His way of teaching is both subtle and challenging! Yes. He is very caring and concerned. He instructs very thoroghly during the class. Yes! He is an amazing teacher and I feel like I've learned more about Drawing from his one semester than the whole of my HS career.

25. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?

I learned about perspective of drawing, and the tons and values of shadows and lighting. This benefits me in improving myself a lot better in drawing, to keep myself satisfied. The ability to look critically at things in the world, and i got much better at using my hands to make the marks that i want to make. I feel I can draw much better and express myself better lots of practice drawing from real life, compared to what I would normally draw (Imaginary, graphics, or animation styles) I really suck at drawing inanimate objects. And I really felt that I needed to stick to using a pencil to draw, but taking this course helped me realize there are other materials that can be used while drawing. I've personally grown attached to the vine charcoal. Personally, I have become more flexble in mind and leanded to relax. I developed new ways of looking at the objects around me and learned new skills that will help me in the future for my major.

26. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?

His ability to relate what is important about making your work better. Knew his material and helped me whenever needed able to help me see where I'm making mistakes and gave suggestions on how to fix or adjust. His advice! He's always able to point out your weaknesses no matter your skill level! just the way he teached and who he is. His constant feedback and encouragement!

ample help towards those interested in excelling Carol Jennings showed concern for his students by periodically coming by to check up on his students, commenting on things they were doing well, and correcting things they were doing wrong, or would show them an easier way of approaching a specific problem. At the beginning of every class, he would always ask, "Are there any last minute questions before we get started?", and he would always find compliments to give each student. he would help you Individualized attention

yes. this instructor has a fundamental approach to teaching the techniques of traditional art. He has a keen eye toward proper techniques I would definatly recommend this teacher to any student wishing to take an art course. He drives students to do their best, and, as his grading is based upon accuracy, effort, and completion of assignments, everything is on the student. yes since hes fun Yes definately. Instructor is able to teach all levels of students.

excellent Overall, Carol Jennings is a great teacher to have. He is funny, loves his work, and cares about his students. You could not ask for more from an instructor. I am greatful for learning a new skill.

his hands-on way of teaching (demonstrating techniques as he introduces them; painting on students' works to show the immediate difference of proper technique) One of the most helpful things about this instructor is that he is honest. If a student was excelling on a certain area of their work, he would say so. If a student was having problems with their work, he would let them try on their own first for a bit, then help them by telling them what they were doing wrong, and different ways to fix it. He also told us right from the start how he graded.

He has an eye for how to direct you with your own personal style. He does not always tell you what to do, but prompts you in a way that helps you to answer your own questions and solve your own problems. His expertise in art, not only technical, but very knowledgeable about other artists, histories, current processes, etc. He's also very calming, and doesn't get frustrated or bent out of shape. Good balance. Good background in art, personal experience, ability to provide guidance and suggestions in order to aid creative process very accommodating and understanding with lots of patience towards the needs of each students. he's very knowledgeable and good at giving nudges and criticism.

18. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Perhaps adding another painting or two assignments to make us work faster, more spontaneously. I wish he'd reminded everybody more often about the importance of student's showing up for class. This class was lazy! Not his fault; older students are just more lazy. nothing particular. In the beginning, although some of the studies were helpful, it was very overwhelming trying to get everything done and do a good job because there were so many little things. The pointillist project felt especially unnecessary. It would be nice to somehow get through the studies in a more cohesive way.

Always spoke one on one with each student more than once during each studio class. Individual concern. Very non-judgmental, yet gave good constructive criticism. Takes time to talk with each student in order to help their progress in each project one on one evaluation of work and a good follow through in the process of all the given projects.

20. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

YES! He is a super great teacher! No, I would not recommend Carl to other students, because his classes are already overfilled and I wouldn't get in. Yes, class is fun and enlightening. Provides just enough guidance and distance in order to help but not get in the way of personal style Definitely! Awesome class! Awesome instructor! Definitely

- A stronger understanding of color and how to achieve certain colors. - Approaching paintings from different angles, rather than my own habits. - Trusting myself more with my painting. I consider this a dumb question. I gained a lot of information as well as more self-confidence in creating art, which can be taken into other aspects of life Being able to come up with ideas that cultivates creativity. I understand better how I work and I was also stretched to see all the different ways I could paint. It was nice to step back and think, "wow, that's good!"

26. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?

His ability to help you find your own voice. He knows. Assignments were structured but open ended, in order to allow for more personal creative input The instructors teaching style and his patience towards the difference of each students. I valued his ability to throw out suggestions. He also has an excellent eye for the composition as a whole.

Nothing. He always had very worthwhile direction and ideas. He knows. nothing. It sometimes felt hard to stay true to what I felt was right to paint because of his desire to push us.
