9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Keep doing what you're doing! Even though this course was online, I could tell that she was always prepared and was very knowledgable about the subject.
- More example problems, though we already have the book and MyStatsLab, it would have been better to have something different. - Although the lecture videos were helpful, it would have been great if we also have the powerpoint slides to go along with it, to take extra notes about the lecture topic and other stuff from the book.
Maybe go a bit slower
Majority of the examples in the lecture could be found in the book. Although Dr. O did explain the examples more thorough than the book, it would be more helpful if the lecture examples differed from the book.
Dr. O is an effective instructor that is fluent in the topic. I would ask that she would expand her teaching methods for older students too. Older students or returning students may need a little more time to understand concepts that would be easier for younger students to pickup on. I would spend time or require homework on the basics of excel spreadsheets. I would also try more to tie in formulas to what is being presented in examples in excel for each lesson. Having some type of side by side comparison for a formula to what was being put into excel would greatly illustrate what was being taught.
The one thing that would have helped me learn more effectively during this course would have been to simplify some of the terminology during the lectures. Statistics is all new to me, and a lot of students, so perhaps some clarification is non-statistical terminology about the statistical terminology could be useful
I think it would be good if she broke things down a little more. Granted, this is a basic statistics course, however, a lot of classmates do not have any background in statistics or the concepts involved with statistics, so her use of a lot of the vocabulary in her lectures were a bit confusing and out of my range of knowledge. She could maybe stick a few vocabulary slides in her lecture power points prior to beginning the lecture so that those who may not understand certain vocabulary words may get a basic understanding before she starts explaining higher level concepts. She could also speak a little slower in her lecture power points. She tends to talk quickly in her lectures. So you find yourself rewinding five or six times before you actually understand the sentence. She seems very knowledgeable and excited about the subject, but it doesn't seem to be translated to people who do not have much basic knowledge of the subject.
I think she can improve on the course by providing students with extra credit that isn't only accessible if you pay almost $100 or are in Hawaii to participate in research. With online courses, specifically ones that do not require attendance of any kind, it should be taken into consideration that many students are out of the state to travel or visit family. A paper or some sort of other means of extra credit would be greatly appreciated and would be fair for the students that cannot afford MathLab or are not in the state for the summer.

Dr. O'Hanlon has met and exceeded my expectations of this course and I feel there is no improvement that is necessary. I am happy I took her class.
Possibly wording the lectures in a way that a student with little statistical background could understand, or in a way that sounds like it is a conversation and less like reading out of a text book. Overall that is my only suggestion.
One way this course can be improved is there were a way in which there is a group chat room set up so at a designated time we can all be signed in and ask one another questions and also Sam and get feedback from one another. So its like we're in a live classroom discussion but instead it is done over the internet in a AIM chat room.
She can be more understanding when it comes to mistakes in grammar and critiquing emails are kind of intimidating. She can also offer more help or clarification when going over some of the difficult topics.
-- snipped --
Do more examples in the lectures. Explain things and explain them thoroughly. Go slower when teaching in the lecture so it is easier for the students to follow along and understand what exactly is happening and how to do the material.

Awesome! Learned a lot from discussion topics and critiques.
Dr. O was very knowledgable about the subject and helped students try to figure things out on their own or with the help of peers. She was very open and honest to what she expected from the students and was very understanding if problems arose. Dr. O was very fair at grading assignments and always kept students updated to what was going on with grades and assignments.

Overall this was a very challenging course. For someone like me that has not taken a structured math class for almost 20 years, I do appreciate Dr. O's enthusiasm in teaching this subject. Her style of teaching was very interesting in that it made the subject of Statistics entertaining. Her style of teaching is a totally different style that I have been accustomed to over the years. It is fresh and does appear to fit in with a younger student population. It is fast paced and encouraged me to move quicker to keep up. It is not to say that this was bad, actually it made me feel that math should not be looked upon as boring and slow, but instead something to look forward to.
The course was very challenging and well put together. Study skills and mathematical skills were enhanced for me because of this.

One thing I really enjoyed about this class is how straight-forward Sam is with her students. She is not afraid to correct you very boldly without sugar coating anything. As a grammer/spelling nut, I also appreciated that she constantly corrected students posts. She would also comment on posts with advice or notes. Very great with correcting students and in college, this is very necessary. I appreciated the extra time she put towards this.

Dr. O'Hanlon is an incredible asset to the University of Hawaii Manoa campus and the community of Hawaii. I hop she continues to teach at the University of Hawaii Manoa because if she ever leaves, we will receive a major lost. This is my last class for my BA in Public Administration and I am happy to say I leave fulfilled and ready for the world because of Dr. O'Hanlon. I am sad that I never had an opportunity to have a live class with her. Because I think the face to face interaction would have been memorable. Thank you for the opportunity to provide feedback and please take care of a...my...great professor.
Great Course! Thanks!
I liked that you had us post critiques because we learned from one another that way. I also thought that by giving us 2 chances at homework assignments really helped because it gave me a chance to learn from my mistakes and do well on exams. I also thought that you were very understanding and helpful when we had problems and got back to us in a very quick and timely manner.
Overall this class did push me to my limits and out of my comfit zone, which in the end has made me a stronger student. Although very intimidating at first, Dr. O'Hanlon was very generous with grading and giving second chances as our class hit multiple learning bumps.
Although I think Sam's communication with students can be improved, there are also things that I appreciate about the course. She gave us the opportunity to re-submit homework, gave an untimed re-do on one of the exams, and gave feedback very quickly on assignments.

9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Mrs. O'Hanlon taught this class very well and the way it was constructed was more organized then a lot of other teachers.
-- snipped --
Every aspect of this class was well-organized and I appreciate that. Sam was accessible when I had questions or concerns and showed her knowledge of the material we covered in class. Out of all the assignments in this class, I think critiques were probably a little difficult for me to understand. I was a little confused about what exactly we were supposed to compare in our critiques. I probably would have preferred to write a paper instead.
provide more examples for the calculations in terms of external links etc
I think that Sam did a pretty good job teaching this course. I found it a really challenging class because I don't like/ am not good at math, but I think that her lectures were helpful and easy to understand. One suggestion would maybe go a little slower on lectures, sometimes I felt like concepts were going a little too fast
Some of the material was difficult to grasp. Perhaps slowing down and taking more time to explain the more difficult concepts might be helpful.
N/A. Professor O'Hanlon has been an excellent instructor for this course.
I think it would have been very helpful if students were shown which problems had the most wrong answers (from homework assignments) collectively as a class so that instead of being provided an answer key, we would be able to figure out how to effectively solve the problem with explanations/other resources. Sometimes the textbook doesn't do a great job at explaining certain computational problems.
Since it is an online class, I understand that it is a bit difficult. Since we could not physically ask the teacher questions, I had to find other ways to understand and ask Sam for help as well. The only thing that I had a difficult time with was understanding how to fix my answers sometimes when I asked for help.
constant communication is key. She can keep up with the constant communication through her students. I believe that was one of the main reasons why many students were able to understand the material clearly including myself
Maybe a little more structure. More warnings about turning in things on time, and tests. But it is always hard with an online class.
Respond to emails and discussion posts in a less intimating way.
I enjoyed the powerpoint lectures and the excel walk throughs, as they were very helpful in helping me understand the material because I'm a visual learner. That 3rd exam was really tough, I guess since the first two were relatively easy I totally under studied for the third one and had no idea what I was doing. But I really appreciate you letting us make that up!
She really knew her stuff and was very organized. I wish that maybe some content in the course could have been introduced in simpler terms and then built upon from there. Although she really did know the material, it was sometimes very difficult to follow and I felt left in the dust a few times.

Sam was definitely knowledgeable about the material we covered in this class. While the homework assignments were challenging, the lectures were very clear and the examples given were very helpful. I definitely learned a lot and this subject required my undivided attention as the process to solve some of the homework problems were long at times. Overall, challenging course but I learned a lot and Sam was always accessible if we had questions or concerns.
Sam is an amazing teacher who seems to truly care how her students are absorbing the material. She provided us with ample resources, time, and opportunity to fully delve into statistics. Her clarity and communication skills gives Sam an advantage over most teachers, not just those of statistics.
I think Sam is a very helpful teacher who wants students to try their best and is very encouraging
I was really impressed how this class was conducted. The material on Laulima was well organized and easily accessible. Professor O'Hanlon consistently kept in contact with the class and has been as punctual as possible with grading our assignments/exams. She also encourages us to do our best while understanding that the course itself is difficult. I'd highly recommend her to others who would take this course in the future.
Online courses aren't always easy, so I commend you on doing the best you can! Thank you for your time and effort (:
I have previously took this subject from a different professor in spring 14. Not only that professor did not seem to care about the concerns of the students, but they also made the material seem complicated and boring. Thus having me retake this course. Sam has not only improved my outlook on this subject but made me understand the concepts. She is a great teacher and cares about her students. She took the time to explain the material and communicated effectively to her students when they needed her.
This course was very difficult to take online, especially over an entire summer. Had I known how much time this class was actually going to take, I probably would not have taken it because it really slowed my summer down. There are some courses that people find easier to take online, and I do not think statistics is one of them. I had so many little questions throughout this course that were almost too small to start a discussion about, but would have been quickly and easily answered had this been a course taken in an actual classroom. I did learn a lot but I feel as though I struggled so much throughout the whole summer that it almost was not worth it.

This is a very challenging class to teach/learn online and while it makes sense that students should be able to use logic and decipher what needs to be done in word problems, I think it would be very helpful to have the homework and exams state the question exactly the same and then maybe have some extra credit assignments/exam questions that present the problems in a different way/format and ask students what process would need to be completed. The material is just too new to many students in this class for us to see the question other than in the original format it is taught. Also with excel test questions having the workbook uploaded was GREAT but it might be easier if there was already space for the actual words we need to include (hypothesis/conclusion). For some of us simply typing the equations ( even in simplified form ex: H_0, S^2) is very new and takes a while to think about and locate the symbols. Maybe including a video walk through of exam-like questions would be helpful.

25. Comment on the instructor's concern for the students.
After every exam, Sam made sure to give students an open forum where students could discuss the difficulties they may have had on the exam. She answered questions, and made sure all students felt comfortable discussing any difficulties they may have had in grasping any of the concepts. She genuinely cares about the students, and always wanted to make sure we understood all concepts covered in the course.
Wants students to succeed and provides lots of help to those who need it.
Clearly the instructor wants all of her students to pass this course and makes great effort to be available in person and is always quick to reply to emails. I think sometimes comments on the online discussion forums can make people feel silly or bad and regret asking or saying things because they may have used the wrong terminology or can't adequately express their question via written word. Other than that and my own struggle with this subject, Sam has been way more attentive and involved than any of my other online instructors and I can tell she genuinely takes an interest in her student's success not just in her courses, but in life and school in general. Great semester! Thanks :)

9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
just making class a little more lively. Class seems at times very dragging and hard to pay attention.
I think it would be nice if we spent a little more time on each chapter. But given the time constraint I understand why this is difficult. Also would like more time spent on excel.
The homework that is due on exam days is usually review for the exam - maybe if it was due one class session before the actual exam would help some students know whether they're on the right track or what they should seek further assistance in.
Because this course is condensed it is very hard to learn all the concepts in large chunks without getting the basic steps to certain calculations very solid. Perhaps if the homework had more practice on step by step calculations. Such as making sure you know how to get a mean, sum of squares and degrees of freedom for basic problems. The long list of calculations given all at once, as is necessary for final product, becomes overwhelming if you don't have a healthy understanding of the smaller steps in between. Stuff that would seem second hand for a math lover, but is not obvious to those who struggle with math.

25. Comment on the instructor's concern for the students.
She is very thoughtful and very felxiable
She showed a lot of concern. The class felt extremely personalized and it really felt like she cared. That's a difficult quality to find at uhm. She's s good teacher.
We could count on Sam to let us know how we were doing in the class and how to improve not only our grades but our understanding of the subject, as well as providing us with tools to alleviate some of the extra time consuming aspects of statistics. I also believe she showed concern for us for allowing us to make mistakes, correct them, and also explaining to us the reasoning and importance of statistical methodology. Sam also communicated well with us and went out of her way to email students any helpful resources.
Sam went above and beyond to make sure we each had every opportunity possible to get the information needed to do well in this course. She was extremely flexible, and I for one greatly appreciated it. Yes, we still had to do the work, but that is the whole purpose of the course, and I appreciated that she didn't lower the standard just because the other students weren't willing to put in the effort. She is a great instructor and I very much enjoyed having her for this class.
