13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I found this course very challenging but Ms.Jacobs was always available and willing to give me the extra instruction I needed to be successful. I found the Hawaii aspect of our course material made the English 100 interesting. The guest lecturers invited by Ms. Jacobs provided deeper understanding of Hawaii and the connection we all have to our environment as individuals which inspired me to want to write.

I loved the interconnection with the class and teacher. I really enjoyed learning from guess speakers and being involved with groups.
I have learned many things that I can list throughout this semester. This semester i love the fact all the resources and handout were useful to use in the future. Also, i love the fact by following the writing checklist was helpful for all of my class assignments.
It seems absurd that an English writing class would help me connect to my Hawaiian culture. This course did exactly that. The assignments were relevant and left lasting impressions. This course is a lot of work but the syllabus was outlined very nicely, there was always lots of help, and it was very hard to get oneself lost if one was present and paying attention. The amount of personal energy that Ms. Jacobs brings to this course is commendable and inspirational.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?

There is nothing to improve this course.
Ms. Jacobs is a wonderful, outrageously helpful instructor. I can offer no opinion in the way of improvement. If there are criticisms, I would imagine that it would be something along the lines of students not being able to relate to the subject material or an intense workload. If this course were based upon the writings of Swedish authors as opposed to Native Hawaiian authors it still would have been fascinating and doable.

Ms. Jacobs is a wonderful teacher. I have learned so much from her and can use these skills to help me succeed in my future classes and jobs. She not only made class interesting she showed each student her passion for teaching and how much she cares about her students.
It was fun having you this semester. I have learned a lot and this course was useful and handy throughout life. You make the writing class fun and exciting environment towards everyone.
Ms. Jacob's energy is contagious. This class had a positive and profound impact on me. The first essay "Who Am I?", led me to rediscover characteristics of myself that I forgot I had. Essay three help me find and reclaim personal power that I had given away. Ms. Jacobs, I would like to thank you. You have helped me become a better writer but you have also helped me to heal, just by being yourself. I am Pele. I am also Hi'iaka waiting for the chaos to die down. I wish I could take your class forever but I will settle for your awesome handouts and my notes. You are wonderful, and I appreciate your taste is music!

review before quiz, vocabulary building, note taking, annotating,outlining. The SQ3R I believe is the most important piece of knowledge that i know will be of great use for all future courses.
I liked that this class helped me know people of all my classes, before I couldn't remember anyone in any classes, now I know everybody by name and face. I also like the quote journal, it really helped me figure out more of what I want to be and what I represent.
I loved how enthusiastic Rebecca Jacobs was as a teacher! Our class activities were always set up to where we would be using information that was freshly introduced to us so we could grasp a better understanding. Our projects were always clearly defined for us. Having print-outs of the lectures in class were a great tool to keep our brains active!
I really liked the Quote Journal and the acting out the Words of the Day vocabulary words! It was very fun and engaging.

English 102 - College Reading should be a pre-requisite to taking English 100. Had I taken Eng 102 first, I would have understood English 100 a whole lot better.
Ms. Jacobs is a great teacher. She is always ready to help her students and gives us the necessary tools to successfully complete her assignments. I think it would be a great idea, as well as beneficial, for Ms. Jacobs to teach a writing intensive class. Maybe the course could connect the Hawaiian Culture like how her Piko Class does. I think the school would thrive with a Hawaiian Culture/Literature based writing intensive class. I also know a lot of people would sign up for that because people are hungry to learn about the Hawaiian Culture and to learn our history. It also helps us to relate more to the stories that we must write about. It is more effective than just writing about a story that came from the mainland or is just any article. I hope that by Spring 2015, Ms. Jacobs will be teaching some form of a writing intensive class.

Although there were a lot of handouts: Each one of them offered an abundance of needed information that pertained to our work in writing. Very helpful, so much aloha and so respectful of our Hawaiian culture and to each student in our class. I can truly say that I can CONFIDENTLY write essays and papers. I will keep the books used in this class because it will surely be helpful throughout my years in college. Mahalo nui loa Kumu, Hulo!!!

She was always available to help everyone.
Mrs. Jacobs went above and beyond to help me learn all the information I should have known before taking her class and presented it to me in a way I would remember. Great teacher! She made learning fun.
Rebecca is an awesome teacher. She clearly lays out expectations and explains the process.
what i like about the class is the vocabulary presentation and writing the essays.
The fact that this course was attached to Hawaiian subjects made learning much more interesting and fun. Having the opportunity to go on learning field trips was fantastic. To physically go to places you read about makes connecting with the story much easier.
The class is great and I had so much fun being in this class. Assignments are good, The field trip I guess they have wonderful times. I did not go because I needed break and I have been to the field trip before with my Hawaiian teacher foer Hawaiian PIKO class last semester.

Put tests and quizzes on Laulima and less paper work would help.
There is nothing to improve because Kumu Rebecca did do a great job on it and she was wonderful with everything from explaining and while having fun inside the class. She makes us laugh and be comfortable with her and I like it very much.

Ms. Jacobs is passionate about her work and it shows. Ms. Jacobs truly seems to want each student to succeed and helps in every way possible.
Rebecca Jacobs is such a great teacher and she does care about her students. She helps when we the students struggles. Any Teacher who does that kind of help will make any students to do and try their best to succeed in class and in school. She gave me a push and she is very patience, kind, thoughtful,understanding,and unselfishly going out of her line so her students can get help. I will missed her terribly when class is over.

I really enjoyed how Professor Jacobs presented the course material through exercises and power point presentations. Professor Jacobs encouraged us to use our resources for tutoring and our classmates for feed back on essays and I though that was a plus.
I liked learning about different types of papers.
I like the different techniques that Ms. Jacobs used to teach the class. If a student didn't understand the subject of the day, she took the extra effort to explain in more detail so the student could understand. The writing projects she assigned would have been very difficult for me if she assigned it, gave a due date, and just expected the class to work on it then turn in by the due date. But she took on a different approach compared to my other classes. She broke up the assignments into several steps, that when it was actually due, it was really easy to put everything together and have the final product by the due date. The biggest advantage for me in this class is that everything she taught the class had something to do with Hawaii and/or the cultures of Hawaii (something that is VERY familiar to me). I was able to learn writing skills and apply it by writing about Hawaii.
I liked how it was related to the Hawaiian culture.

I wish I had taken English 102 - College Reading prior to taking this writing class. I do believe that if I understood how to make an outline, fragment sentences, run ons, prepositional phrases and so forth, I would probably have had a better understanding coming in to Expository Writing.

Rebecca Jacobs creativity and uplifting mana (spirit), has encouraged and comforted me to look past my personal struggles and medical issues and focus on the task at hand. Ms. Jacobs ability to present and instruct our class inspired me to give my best. Ms. Jacobs utilize a variety tools to teach just so her students would understand. Sheleft no educational stone unturned. This left me with no excuse but to get the assignments done. I enjoyed and learned from her creative power points. Her ability to draw a reader into a story with her bigger then life like gestures in order to bring out the creative writers she believes we are. Finally, she connects her students no matter our cultural background and begins to weave us together like lauhala, then encourages her students to share a variety of words(word of the day)while weaving in Hawaiian Legends & Stories as she exuberates the Aloha spirit. Not only am I great full for Ms. Rebecca Jacobs, her passion for her students and her desire to go beyond what is asked of her as an instructor inspires me. Hawai'i Community College must feel honored having such a gentle spirited, hard working, dedicated, committed, passionate, creative, inspirational member like Rebecca Jacobs on there team. What an amazing women.
Rebecca Jacobs is a great instructor. I appreciate her sacrifices and hard work that she put into making sure we understand the assignment(s). She goes the extra mile to ensure her students grasp the concept of materials given to successfully complete the course. It was a pleasure to be a part of her class and to gain her teachings.
I loved how the subject matter directly related to Hawai`i, the Hawaiian culture and Native Hawaiian people.
The main essays dealt with Hawaiian subjects while incorperating proper academic english writing techniques. The weekly assignment load was very much appropriate, especially with spaced out essay assignments. The instructor was very much prepared using relevant material and clear methods of teaching which allowed continued interest for us as students and basic learning of the subject. The instructor was also more than willing to communicate and help outside of the classroom; she was actually one of the teachers that most used Laulima among my other four. The different guest speakers and lecturers of Hawaiian background gave interesting lectures and presentations that gave us excellent primary sources for our essays.
I like that she had so many teaching methods and materials to help us understand what she was teaching. I also enjoyed her enthusiasum.
The amount of resources/provisions that were used was helpful in making essays.
I really enjoyed the essays and the topics that they were on. This class really helped me develop into a better writer.
I liked how my teacher helped me through this writing class. She broke down the steps to writing essays which made it so much easier to write an effective essay. I liked how she related our essays on Hawaii because it kept me interested in wanting to learn more. I would reccommend any student to sign up for her class because she helped me learn the different techniques and ways of writing and also the guidelines of writing an effective essay.She made writing very simple and less stressful.
All assignments were organized and easy to follow.
Ms. Jacobs uses a variety of media to help make the subject more interesting. Her enthusiasm also helps to motivate most of the students.

Don't mess with a GREAT thing!
More time for writing!
MAybe allow room for more choice when picking topics for our writings, people tend to write better when their writing about something they are interested in.
One thing i would like to suggest is the homework. When ever we had an assignment/exercise due from the book, it was always assigned to us before we learned about it in class. It would make a little more sense to teach us the techniques first, then assign us the work.
I do not think there is any need for improvement.

I feel that the course curriculum might be a little too hawaiiana oriented. There are those in the class that are not from Hawaii, or learning english as a second language. This might make it harder for them to follow along than for those of us who live here. While I have no problems with hawaiiana, this is an english writing class.
Overall, enjoyed the professor, the class, and my classmates.

This is my second semester with Rebecca Jacobs and i thourally enjoy her teaching methods.
I liked that Ms.Rebbeca Jacobs made class fun instead of a total drag.
The assignments were quite difficult to take in, but with the help of Ms. Jacobs, the lessons learned became easier. I'm not very much of an English fanatic though this class has taught me how to present my homework for future references.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
I believe that the English 102 has helped me but the SQ3R should be taken out or re evaluated.
If the SQ3R system is to be part of the course, then it should be introduced earlier in the semester. Personally, I feel that the system is too time-consuming for short articles, especially for those that already have a system for analyzing written material. However, I can see how the SQ3R can be effective for written material that is in-depth and/or at least several pages.

I felt SQ3R was pretty much useless. I dont think anybody would use the SQ3R method in their everyday life. I felt like the SQ3R was everything we learned but just stuffed all together, which was pretty overwhelming.

I enjoyed the aspect of learning about local legends.
This course will definitely support me in my college and work career!
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
I would suggest that the instructor go over the information prior to assigning homework so that students are prepared, and not trying to figure it all out on their own, and then being told how to do it after they turn it in.
Ms Jacobs seems to give more attention to the students who are loud or complain a lot. She gives the needed time,patience, and attention to those type of students. The disturbing thing about that is, when I ask a for question in class and need her to explain something, she rushes through it or says to email her. The thing Im unhappy about is the time and patience she gives to the two rude, loud individuals who complains constantly. Then to top it off she doesn't have enough patience to answer my question because she gave the complaing, rude students too much class time and extra attention just to settle them. Oh and worst yet she seems bothered that Im asking a question about the discussion in class then doesn't answer it in completely. No student should have deal with this. Should I be disruptive in class so Ms Jacobs will give attention to the questions I ask? Everything else was just ok. The entire class could've learned a lot more if she was fair about student conduct and followed the rules in the syllabus. One last thing, I saw that she made special exceptions for the students mentioned above. She didn't say it out loud so everyone could hear it but when they asked to turn their homework/essay later, she said it was ok. I heard it at least 10 times throughout the semester. I then asked if I could turn my homework in late and was told to turn it in with my journal for half credit. Did she allow them full credit for turning it in to her? Why didn't she tell them the same thing she told me and turn it in with our journals? I don't now for sure what other agreement was made with other students but she should be fair and keep it fair for the whole class. Blah!

The assignments that were assigned were challenging but it broaden my knowledge on writing.

The essays may be a bit overwhelming at first, but Ms. Jacobs is so helpful.

I liked that Rebecca Jacobs was always willing to help any of her students with their work. She was always there and very understanding with her students. She always gave me alot of help when i needed it and always provides her students with any resources that she is able to find.
Professor Jacobs is a great teacher. At first I though she would be difficult, but she was willing to help me when I was caught up: not going to class and doing work. She's very understanding and she keeps the class awake and fun. :)
I really enjoyed Ms. Jacobs style of teaching; eventhough the course work was intense the way that it was presented made it easy to follow.
I liked how Ms.Jacobs taught us the material for each paper thoroughly and allowed us a good amount of time to complete each essay. I always liked that we completed our assignments step by step.

Ms. Jacobs is the best instructor I have. She is fair to everyone, even to me even though I am Micronesian. She doesnt view me differently.
I think she's an awesome professor who encouraged her students and I am greatful for having her teach my english course
Instructor Jacobs methods are great. Her down-to-earth personality helped make English 100 bearable. She's always offering her help to students that need it. She always answers e-mails and other inquiries promptly.
Everything taught in her class I already learned in English 22! She spoke way too much during class and passed out too many papers. Most times she was repetitive with information and made us do way too many assignments to learn just one thing. On the plus side she was an amazing teacher with a great attitude who was always willing to help any student in need.
