8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| The production and learning about the camera |
| Having the software (Final Cut Pro) available to us. |
| Final cut help and the book was amazing. Taught me so much about filming. I will keep that book
forever and refer back to it in the future. |
| Shooting |
| The text book was really helpful |
| I thought learning final cut pro was pretty valuable in terms of editing. But I think the things we
learned in the beginning of the class were more important such as camera angles, what is quality
work, what you were expecting from us, and good examples of footage such as the King's Speech,
and that one with clean exits and entrances. |
|
|
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| â?¢ The cameras weren't digital. We are in the year 2011 and we are still using TAPE?
â?¢ To borrow a camera, took a great deal. I understand taking the test part, but there are a few
things I hated about using the camera...
1. It's tape, which sucks because this is NOT the 80's!
2. The quality sucks because it's so old, and the LCD screen is usually broken.
3. Having to check it out in pairs. Some projects were solo and it was a pain in the ass trying to
find someone to take time off just to rent it with you.
4. The 24 hour notice... REALLY? Does it take that long to write down who's gonna borrow what?
5. There's hardly any cameras to being with.
6. Having to drive or walk there just to write our names down in person to say we are coming
back tomorrow for the camera. That was extremely stupid. Why dont you write my name down
over the phone and I will bring an ID and prove it was me calling when I arrive. |
| I wish there were more cameras/ video assignments. I wanted to get hands on WAY more but the
media lab is lame. |
| Lectures without practice. |
| We spent a lot of time reviewing tutorials, and there was very little hands on instruction |
| All the distractions and time stalling. I felt like the time went by so fast, either from someone
talking or asking to many questions. And like you mentioned it's because everyone was at different
levels in terms of using the camera, editing in final cut pro, or both! I was one of those people who
had a great time, but didn't know anything so I had to stay after class all the time. |
|
|
10. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
|
| I will benefit from everything I learned in this course |
| Practicing my filming was fun. but I dont think it gave me a good idea of what it's really like in the
field. I wish there was more depth to it, like filming a short video for UH campus life. You what I
mean? Something a little bit more real. I know we are just learning the software, but honestly, the
class was not very inspiring. |
| filming, editing...shooting good angles |
| Experience working with professional equipment. |
| Meeting deadline with limited cameras was a challenge that we can learn from the process |
| I felt the semester was too short. Now that I know how to do everything, there is so many other
films I would like to make or edit. It was fun. And not only did it teach me to be a more creative
and analytical person but it also shaped my time management skills as well. Even though,
everything I turned in was barely in time or late, I now know how to bracket my time frames and
how long each task should take. This will help me personally because I am able to do these types
of filming production on my own, it's a great start. And it's honestly changed the way I view
movies. I notice how much work is actually put in a production. |
|
|
11. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
|
| Learning how to create good shots and videos |
| Making friends |
| Getting access to the camera. |
| The text |
| Everything was quite helpful in this course, but the most valuable was learning the camera
techniques. Everything in the text book, even if it was so thin and comic book style, helped out a
lot. It was easy to understand and I am glad I can refer to it later on. |
|
|
12. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
|
| The examples we had for each project was either terrible (in my opinion) or non existent. There are
millions of short videos and commercials etc... that we could have looked over and critiqued... but
instead we viewed an arial shot of the island -boring.
Im sorry to sound rude, but it's true and a lot of other people feel the same way. I am not sure if
they are going to say anything, but I will because I want to see a positive, uplifting change in our
curriculum. As of now.. it's so bland and boring. - & we are suppose to be the creative students,
am I wrong? |
| the media lab is outta control. |
| Practice assignments that were never finished or graded. |
| Instruction was very repetative |
| As I mentioned earlier, there was a lot of times where everyone was either making too much noise
and time went to fast and quickly and everyone was distracted. I was one without any video
production skill going into this class, so for me, that was the least helpful part. Nothing to do with
the instructor. I thought he was too nice where sometimes some people would just be rude! |

39. Other comments:
|
| We need to find a way where we can actually use and practice our skills outside of class, however, I
think the Comm staff should be responsible to provide that opportunity for us. This is a University
and somehow I feel that high school students do cooler projects than us. That makes me sick to
pay thousands of dollars every year for mediocre education. I believe they offer more in community
colleges, too bad, for some dumb reason, the "credits" aren't good enough. -That is bullshit and
things need to change.
I didnt want to take this survey at first... but now im glad I did. |
| We only had a few assignments all semester with not much practice doing what we wanted, and some students knew more than the professor did. |
| I am sad that you wont be teaching another semester at UH. But I totally understand! :) I am also
on the other hand stoked and appreciative that a camera man, and movie reviewer from the actual
news station was our instructor. Learning first hand information and first hand skill sets from
someone whose been in the industry for a long time helped out a lot. I am really appreciative.
Thank you for an awesome semester! |
