7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The Point-Counter Point project was extremely valuable from both an individual level in preparing and presenting arguments, as well as in the context of group discussions that I believe allowed students to get a much deeper understanding of the complexity of the issues addressed.
The point-counter point debates really helped me to solidify my understanding of what was presented in the early half of the course.
The sample paper and presentation were very valuable. These examples were very helpful in understanding what was expected of us and what was wanted for these assignments. The assignments assigned were challenging yet so enriching and meaningful. In addition to the resources we were exposed to during class, I also appreciated the additional resources posted on laulima for future use. This was the only class in the entire program that I felt comfortable to share my opinion. In other classes, highly charged topics usually end up with people not listening to what others have to say. Dr. Taualii in control of the class and discussion at all times which set the tone for a safe and welcoming environment for discussion. In a class setting, this is where we have room to make mistakes and think out loud. This comfortable discussion setting was very valuable. We are all much smarter for being able to listen to everyone's perspectives on different topics.
Everything. This was the single best class of my MPH degree. Beyond providing extremely useful information, this was the only class that provided an opportunity critically assess public health research and practice. The point/counterpoint exercise was an excellent way to bring complicated issues to the fore. Grounded by concrete evidence students learned how to navigate very politically complex conversations thoughtfully and with ease. This is an ESSENTIAL skill for public health professionals entering the field with all of its politically complicated considerations.
Everything! The level of expectation was high and students rose to the challenge. The discussions were intense and touchy, yet an appropriate and respectful classroom environment was set from the beginning. We were able to vent, learn, share, grow, and question things within a safe environment. Safe, as in respectful and realistic. Maile is an incredible educator. It is few and far between that we, as students within this department, receive mentorship, leadership and knowledge from faculty like Maile provides. Honestly, she is committed and dedicated to TEACHING. She put in countless hours to research and prepare for classes. It showed and was greatly appreciated. She had high expectations for the class and set the example by holding herself accountable to them and expecting nothing less from herself. She literally created and presented an oral presentation and written research paper to demonstrate what she expected from us! It was awesome! She is such a resource and wealth of knowledge. She's motivated, compassionate, educated and responsive to students. Please do the Department and students a favor and continue to support her and bring more faculty on that are like her!

I greatly enjoyed the time we spent discussing the various lecture topics as a whole class. Everyone's perspectives and insights were very helpful in my understanding and comprehension of the topics.

13. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Maile is invaluable to the MPH program. She showed an incredible mastery of the subject matter and her teaching style is direct and engaging.
Amazing, she showed us exactly how she expected our presentations and papers to look like.
This course should be mandatory for all OPHS graduates. No other ethics course, or similar course, exists within OPHS and it is needed.
None. This class was FLAWLESS. Dr. Taualii worked tirelessly to ensure the learning of all students in the class and that was evident in the research and preparation she did for assignments and lectures but also in the thoughtful feedback she gave on assignments. Dr. Taualii is skilled at providing the framework and incentive necessary to achieve complicated yet essential tasks such as non-indigenous students forming ethical opinions about research with indigenous communities. We need more professors in the department with this level of commitment to shaping quality public health professionals.
Potentially changing up the final paper. It was challenging to have to integrate both sides of the debate. It was as though we had to research the whole other side. If keeping it the same, possibly make it more clear in the beginning that students should be sharing/saving resources for each other and to take notes during the presentation on the other person's points and class discussion as that will help with the paper. Having maybe two weeks for the paper, following the presentation may help as well. It won't be as daunting and may be able to do a more thorough job with both sides.
excellent teaching style and method
My one concern is with the Point/Counter Point and final paper. I liked the debate-style of the in-class exercise/presentation, but the format of the final paper was a little disjoint for me. Having to include both point and counter point in the paper made it feel like double the work. Even though we shared resources, I still had to research, formulate, and flesh out arguments for the 'other side' which was difficult to do within a week. Perhaps if the paper was due later, it would work. Since everyone did get assigned the topics at the same time, it actually is more fair to have all the papers due on the same day. This way, regardless of when you present, everyone has the same amount of time to research and write.

16. Other comments:
A little more focus to the course would be helpful. As it is now, the course tries to cover a little too much for one semester.
We should definitely continue this class and support others like it. The Indigenous health track is going to be amazing with Maile building the curriculum.
This class exemplifies what all faculty should aim at achieving in OPHS and beyond. Dr. Taualii's dedication to her work in Indigenous health was very motivating and contagious. She was very willing to guide, assist, and work with students. Additionally, her thoughtfulness in the development of the course readings and assignments was very apparent and very meaningful as a student. As a result, I learned so much and will build upon the foundation set by this course.
Thank you for bringing this professor to our school. I am grateful that I was able to take a course with her before I graduated.
This was seriously the best course I have taken in my two years here within the Department. Thank you for bringing Maile on as a faculty member and please enable and support her to expand - she's incredible and has the potential to do awesome things for students, the Department and the community.
