19. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
seems to jump around in his lectures a lot and would help if he would go over the material we'd see on the test in class of just telling us to read the chapters.
I think he can start by not cancelling class every other week. I know that teachers may cancel class because of emergencies that come up, but not every other day of the week. I didn't even learn much because of it.
If you want us to show up for class, you should also show up. Mr. Davis canceled class probably about 9 times over the semester. I pretty much learned nothing, except what I did on my own. He just didn't seem interested in teaching the class, he seemed more concerned with his "tourist" job.
have notes on the board or on a power point.
Be a little nicer.
Nothing.
We had to read chapters for basically every homework assignment. It was hard so he could slow it down a bit.
I think that he should be more clear about what is he'll be going over when we meet again in the next class. Be a little more organize.
None
Every way possible. Lecture on relative IMPORTANT points that we will be tested on. Lecture properly. Maybe attend some lecturing seminars? Stop lecturing on extra terrestrials, his own opinions, and his life. Mention these things, maybe talk a short bit about them, and then move on. Use Laulima or something else that allows students an ORGINIZED view of the happenings of the course.
i think he could improve by getting more organized, and setting a standard or syllabus instead of making up assignments as he goes. Also, becoming more confident in what he was teaching, because it leads me to think he's an inexperienced teacher, or maybe he just has no interest in teaching or the subject.
less monotoned, less commanding, more deadlines and organizational skills
Disappointed is the best word I can come up with. Not only did Mr. Davis repeatedly cancel class with little or no notice; he would often lecture for 15-20 minutes and say he'd had enough and was done for the day and dismissed us. The lecture/class is an hour and 15 min...he rarely utilized that time. He rarely lectured on the material, and often got off topic and into his personal opinions and politics. It felt like a freshman high school history class. He spent the majority of the class letting us know how well educated he was, yet he was never able to share that knowledge. He would show up late, if at all and talk about his other job most of the time. It seemed like he'd rather be giving his kayak tours than teaching history. He even showed up in wet surf shorts and changed his shirt in class. His behavior was unprofessional at best. His approach to test taking was terrible. And his test prep was non-existent.
He can improve by being more enthusiastic while hes teaching. He should make a powerpoint or some kind of visual display to go with his lecture because his lectures were really boring. He should also think of showing up to class on time because sometimes he was late.
by making the class time more fun. it was boring.
he is very unorganized and he is rude, talks down to students and does not encourage any discussion among students. so working on those areas would help the class...
First of all, he cant act like he interested in the students and respect us. We are paying to be here and paying to learn something. He is being paid to teach us something. His lectures weren't really lectures. They were more like disorganized, discombobulated thoughts. He basically just read the book to us. There are so many interesting things about history, but if he doesn't make them interesting then they are really boring. I could have never attended a class and still gotten an 'A'. He can show better videos, not You Tube videos and make assignments that are fun and relatable.
Needs to improve on the letures in class. need to give visual aids instead of just reading off a paper ! BRING YOUR NOTE BOOK TO CLASS. ALWAYS NEED TO SHOW UP TO CLASS NO MATTER WHAT. NEED TO SLOW DOWN ON YOUR LECTURES GO BY SECTIONS STEP BY STEP. DONT FORCE STUDENTS TO READ ALL 3 CHAPTERS IN 2 DAYS OR LESS ! HAVE BETTER LECTURES IN CLASS. NEEDS TO GIVE HANDOUTS TO STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND THE MARTERIAL BETTER. GIVE STUDENTS ACTIVITIES TO ACTUAL LEARN THE TERMS. NEEDS TO MAKE THE MORE FUN NOT MORE BOARING. RELATE TO THE STUDENTS MORE, EXAMPLE TALK TO EACH STUDENT ONE BY ONE FACE TO FACE IN CLASS. YOUR QUIZES ARE REDICULOUS WORTH 100 POINTS YOU NEED TO KEEP LOWER. BREIFLY EXPLAIN YOUR QUESTIONS MORE ALSO THE ESSAY QUESTIONS NEEDS MORE EXPLAINING ITS VERY HARD TO UNDERSTAND!
nothing it was my best class
20. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
i liked his lectures.
fair grading, no one got a low score that didn't have it coming
There wasn't much that I liked best about the class. I thought the class was boring and non-interesting.
Nothing, I had to do all the learning on my own, he rarely came to class.
I liked the class discussions the best.
Everything was really interesting. I enjoyed the videos a lot!
Videos.
Learning more about history.
I liked the videos and the way he lectured about history, i feel like the tests he gave us were the write kind, and helped us use critical thinking instead of just spitting out facts.
The videos were very helpful. It gave a visual aspect of what we were learning while reading the book.
The first half of the semester
N/A
The movies
Unfortunately...none. I have never written that on a evaluation before.
I liked how he showed us videos
none
I liked that after much discussion, he finally let us use a help sheet for the exams. The exams were crazy for a 100 level survey course. The help sheet definitely helped. otherwise we all would have failed the course, considering that there was no extra assignments given to help with our grade.
I DID LIKE THE FACT THAT HOMEWORK WAS JUSST TO READ BUT OTHER THAN THAT I DID NOT LIKE CLASS AT ALL AND DID NOT LIKE THE TEACHER AND THE TEACHERS LEARNING TO THE STUDENTS !
everything
21. My overall evaluation of this course is...
i was very frustrated throughout most of the semester. mr davis is knowledgeable but he found many reasons to cancel class, end class early, or show relavent videos but only after telling us his throat was dry from his other job. he gave us the impression that we were not worth much of his time. he gave us helpful study guides but half of the content on the tests were topics never discussed in class, the topics were in our book but i would have appreciated more in class discussions. he set good and challenging expectations on our performance but didnt give us much instruction on how to think critically or come to the conclusions on our own. i would not choose to take another of his courses or suggest another student to.
It was fascinating.
less then average
I feel that the teacher is not good at teaching the course. I wasn't able to learn anything much during the time I was in the class. I felt the class was just boring.
I would never re-take this course with Mr. Davis again, thank goodness I have an A so I never have to retake this course.
The course was good, however there were many canceled classes that were inconvenient for me.
Good class.
It is overall okay.
Excellent course. Recommend it for any type of major.
I really liked this course. i feel like i learned a lot and also i learned more details about stuff i already sort of new about. I also saw more how things changed and how that relate to the world today.
The class was very interesting because history isn't really a subject of interest.
Great
For a lecture course it was really terrible. Most of anything we learned for the exams was learned by reading the textbook rather than following the lectures.
i didn't enjoy this class very much and i didn't gain much or anything at all by taking this course because i probably could have learned everything i did by just purchasing my history text book alone.
b-c, okay... graded tests fair, could do fine on test without being in class most of time though.
Great teachers have the ability to instill confidence in their students. Good teachers are able to inspire there students even if the subject matter is difficult or mundane. Edward Davis made you feel defeated from day one. Especially being new to Maui as well as UHMC, I couldnâ??t believe his superiority complex, and total disregard for us as students. He openly shared his belief that being from Maui was a huge disadvantage, and most of us lacked a good basic education. As one of the older students and being close to finishing my degree with a cumulative 4.0 GPA, I have had a lot of teachers and a lot of life experience. This was one of the few initial pre-req's I never took. I was so looking forward to this class. So many things in life reference our historical past. I was excited to finally have a better knowledge base of our foundations and origins. Mr. Davis left me wanting... This is an entry level history class. A lot of young, first year student are taking this course. He made it close to impossible to grasp the simple material that we were given, because he had so little input or drive. We as a class collectively had more enthusiasm and motivation then he did! History can be a relatively boring subject. However with todayâ??s modern technology and the amount of amazing documentaries and a plethora of visually enticing material are at your fingertips on the web, he could have made this exciting. There are so many ways he could have made this class fun and brought the past to life. He did none of those things. It felt like a self-directed or online course with no instructor. Reading the textbook was the most information I could get. He brought nothing else to the table. It feels like a wasted semester. I am sad.
I honestly thought this course with Edward Davis wasn't that great. I didn't really learn much from the instructor because the class was extremely boring. Also, I felt like Edward wasn't very enthusiastic about what he was teaching.
i liked the course material and i think this could have been a good, interesting class with a teacher who was not so irritable and appearing to be "burnt out" from his other job when he comes to class...
....It was terrible! He canceled class way too much, but continued to make a big deal out of our attendance. When he did cancel class, it was 20 minutes before the class started. I would not recommend him as a teacher to anyone i know, unless they are looking to be frustrated on a daily basis.
I WOULD NOT RECOMEND OTHER STUDENTS TO TAKE TAKE HIS CLASS BECAUSE YOU DONT LEARN ANYTHING AND ITS VERY HARD TO UNDERSTAND. NEEDS ALOT OF IMPROVMENT ON EVERYTHING THING STARTING FROM THE FIRST CLASS DAY.
loved it!
22. Other comments:
Some other students spent alot of time complaining about the course, but I leaned alot.
If people want to take other history classes, I suggest you take other teachers besides this one. That's just my opinion.
I'm glad it's almost over.
Good enthusiastic teacher and looked out for the students best interests.
none
Make it an online course maybe? That might have more organization.
I did learn things I did not know, and yes, the multiple questions would be a bad idea on test, essay questions are good with the 10 definition.
The semesters last day of instruction in on May 4th, Mr. Davis informed us that for our final we were to write a paper. After our last exam, which was April 13, we were told that if we had an 85% or higher in the class we no longer needed to attend class. We were also told that there would be no "reading period" or final exam day like the rest of the classes. We are to turn in our final paper to him no later than May 4th, because he will be leaving the island and wonâ??t be back until the day before the fall semester starts. So there is no window for asking questions or emergencies, he simply wonâ??t speak to us in person or via email after the 4th. I donâ??t' even know if we'll ever get our final papers back, let alone find out how we did.
The one thing that irritated me more than anything is how he talked down to all of us in his class. To tell us all we are not working hard enough. This is an entry level course. More than half of us are most likely not working on any type of history degree. He continued to give extra credit assignments and then get upset that no one was doing them. If he wants people to do the assignments then he should have made then mandatory assignments that factored into our grade. I never wanted to attend class because he usually spent the first 20 minutes lecturing on what he was going to lecture on the next time..and then lecture for 15 minutes on current material. after sitting there listening to him degrade us for 30 minutes, he would let us leave because he said he had nothing else for us to do... I found this interesting considering that our exams were rather difficult and he usually didn't lecture on everything he was testing us on. he encouraged class discussion but then disagreed with anything anyone had to say..and then he's pull a huge power trip... what a frustrating semester and and waste of time and money.
ITS NOT FAIR TO NOT GET THE LUECTURE WHEN THERE IS ONLY LESS THAN 10 STUDENTS IN CLASS BECAUSE STUDENTS COME TO CLASS TO LEARN AND HEAR THE TEACHERS LECTURES BUT WE DONT GET THEM BECAUSE THERE IS NOT MANY STUDENTS IN CLASS. STUDENTS WHO SHOWS UP HAVE THE RIGHTS TO GET THE LUCTURE. STUDENTS WHO DONT SHOW UP TO CLASS MISS OUT AND THATS HOW IT SHOULD GO ! NOT PROFESIONAL WHEN YOU SHOW UP TO CLASS WITH WET CLOTHS ! VERY DISTURBING ! DOES NOT EMAIL STUDENTS WHEN HES GOING TO CANCEL CLASS. MONDAY APRIL 25, 2011 THERE WERE MORE THAN 15 STUDENTS ON THAT CLASS DAY AND WE WERE SITTING IN CLASS WAITNG FOR THE TEACHER TO SHOW UP, CLASS STARTS AT 12:00 AND THE TEACHER DID NOT SHOW UP CLASS AT ALL ! THAT JUST WASTE STUDENTS TIME FOR BEING THERE! AND ITS NOT FAIR FOR THE STUDENTS WHO HAVE TO DRIVE DOWN FROM HANA OR HAIKU AND TEACHER DOES NOT SHOW UP, IT WASTED THE STUDENTS TIME AND GAS ! I REGRET TAKING HIS CLASS ! THROUGH OUT THE SEMESTER I DID NOT LIKE IT AT ALL !
