15. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Talk slower or have the classes spread over three days. A lot of the material for the class was oral so if you talk really fast especially when names are difficult to spell it's hard to follow you
The course was well organized and well taught by Professor Williams. Due to the vast contents that needed to be covered, there was little to no time for class discussions daily. Perhaps five minutes before class, students could become engaged in conversation about what was covered in the last class. It may encourage students become more involved while refreshing their memories.
Maybe involve students into the discussion more. Allow for more question and answer group discussions.
- more organized lectures - maybe give weekly worksheets for review
The lecture guides were really useful to me, and it helped me learn the material more. So perhaps lecture guides for each lecture would be helpful.
he was good w/technology
Maybe more interesting videos.
n/a Fantastic method
Maybe just a tad bit more time to digest the history section of this class. I am feeling a little bit rushed in learning the key portions of each time period.
Put powerpoints or key points from the lecture online as a supplement to the lecture.
Some of the information is a lot to take in...especially for someone who was not born and raised here but he does offer office hours
because i've taken 'olelo hawai'i, i know how to spell or sound out the names of hawaiians and hawaiian place names, but i think other people had a hard time keeping up with all the names because they are not familiar with it.
Consistently create lecture study guides. They're very helpful.
More small quizzes and project based, rather than just papers and exams.
Maybe less time explaining the mechanics of the course, and more general knowledge to learn.
I don't really have suggestions, I feel that the class was very well run and I even appreciated the fact that he did not require us to purchase textbooks.
*I enjoyed the lectures, but sometimes its hard to keep up with what was being said. Sometimes I find that videos shown in class that pertained to the material he was talking about helped me understand it better. *Possibly have group work or something, sometimes others can learn from their peers if they don't understand what was taught.
In class reviews for ALL tests. More visuals for other parts of the course, rather than the part where we just watch movies.
Maybe a study guide should have been created for all tests. I think I would have learned more if I knew what I should study and needed to know. Also I may have done better.
I never received replies to any email I sent reguarding the class. It kind of left me hanging but never affected my grade. It would just have been nice to hear something back to know you at least got it
none he does a great job as is
keep up the good work.
Emphasize the importance of the readings, or give less readings.
Talk slowly
Nothing really.
Nothing really. Although the reading assignments are sometimes a bit too long, it make sense since we don't have any other homework or classwork, and the overall class is a lecture-based class.
The course seemed like it was imposing a certain opinion upon the students. Rarely was another outlook offered and when it was it was denounced as wrong. I felt the course had another "ultimate goal" than just teaching facts ... this strengthened when we were asked to vote on Hawaii's status as a state - I felt that the class was designed to guide students into thinking Hawaii as a sovereign nation was the only solution to it's wrongful history. Very disappointed in the limited perspectives offered.
nothing he is very intelligent of hawaiian studies
I really enjoyed the balance of lecture to videos. I think there should be more group discussion during the course of the semester.
I wish we went out into the rest of the Hawaiian Studies building. Like a mini field trip other than the lo'i tour. The campus is so nice I wish they utilized it more. I wish I learned more about Hawaiian culture in a fun way. The readings were very unorganized and he changed them around making it confusing to keep up with. The readings were also very long, maybe if he were to go to BWI and get booklet printed out it would have been nice rather then us all having to print them out. For the map quiz's he should really make better photo copies so we can actually read them...
More written notes or key powerpoints to focus the longer lectures
He needs to check some of his resources before he comes to class. To have a student correct a teacher on common facts isn't a good thing. Especially something like the gender of chief Nae'ole. He is male!
16. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Professor Williams is an excellent instructor. He spoke indepth about the materials and added his own experiences to stimulate students to think more closely about the materials in class.
Very good professor who is very enthusiastic about what he teaches. He is very clear and easy to understand and is very helpful with preparing for tests and communicating what is important information.
He presented the facts first and gave his thoughts after. So he was not bias.
Great knowledge of the course material, very experienced instructor with a lot of achievements to be proud of. Great person to learn from, good story teller, friendly.
good.
He was very enthusiastic, you could tell he was very passionate, which is appreciated.
Very personable professor. The course is full of a lot of knowledge but Williams breaks it down into small enough pieces that gave me enough time to absorb most, if not all, of it.
Well versed and passionate instructor.
A hard working instructor who is more concerned with his student understanding the information than just passing the class.
he is an excellent professor for teaching Hawaiian studies. In the future if I need to or want to take any more Hawaiian studies courses I will be searching for his name when I register.
Very good professor
Very knowledgeable on the subject, approachable. Explains concepts clearly and makes class interesting.
great! Kumu Williams helped me to see a completely different side to these eight islands, and the rest of Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia. People easily overlook big facts like the annexation of Hawai'i, especially when you're from the mainland. Thank you Kumu.
Ronald Williams is a great teacher and he knows a lot about the Hawaiian history and culture. I really enjoyed his class and learn a lot. You can see how passionate he is as a teacher for his class.
great teacher! not boring at all. taught the material in a fluid manner. he was very objective which is really hard to do and i appreciate that.
Definitely shows a lot of interest in the material, which is one of the best possible situations for a class that is mostly lectures.
Awesome!
Knowledgable and passionate about his field. Sometimes would talk in a roundabout manner.
I thought he was great and gave some good information. My only complaint is that he spent half of the semester telling the class that he wasn't trying to convince anyone of anything and the other half of the semester convincing the class of his ideals. Now, I completely agree with what he was trying to illustrate but it just kind of pissed me off that he kept claiming throughout the whole semester that he had no bias or agenda while he had a VERY clear and obvious political agenda. Again, i AGREE with his political stance as I think it is moral and just and it's a stance i think more people should have. But i strongly disagree with the way his political agenda was communicated.
His enthusiasm for his subject material made lectures go by quickly. He didn't give information in a biased manner the way many professors who deal with opinions and politics do. I enjoyed the subject material as well as Kumu Williams' demeanor and teaching style.
I enjoyed the class, you can tell that he knows the material very well. He is very easy to communicate with, via after class and email which is helpful.
Great class, great teacher/student communication. Great class. Party at the end of the semester was great.
Good professor, good class. Learned a lot.
responsible, enthusiastic, and well educated about the subject
One of my favorite teachers ever
very highly.
Enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the material, and has a passion for Hawaiian History that makes him a very good teacher on the subject.
His an Awesome Instructor! With a great teacher like him, I was sure that life would be a successful journey but I never knew he will also make the journey to success such a cakewalk. I canĂ¢??t express my gratitude Sir! You have been more than a teacher a mentor, guide, and philosopher! Thanks for blessings me.
He is an excellent Hawaiian studies teacher and I enjoyed his course very much this semester.
Very enthusiastic about the topic. Really clear during his lecture.
Good guy. A bit heavy handed in pressuring the class to agree with his opinion. But overall a good instructor with enough patience and understanding to make the class feel comfortable.
great teacher. really puts thing into better perspectives
I enjoyed how enthusiastic he was about the subject and I hope he continues to teach. I felt at times though that he, like most professors I had who are working on their Ph.d, felt a little too strongly about some subject areas and taught with a bit of a bias. I also liked how he would email us at least once a week to make sure we knew exactly what needed to be done for the next class, it helped me stay on task.
Mr. Williams seems like a really nice guy. Very relaxed but graded harshly. As a person I liked him but as a teacher I think he is still learning. The course was interesting and the work load was manageable.
Great
He needs to check some of his facts before coming to class. But he's fair with all of his students and his methods of teaching are effective.

22. Other comments:
Videos and films were a very important aspect of the course to me, and I learned the most from them. They are able to convey the material clear and thorough.
Great class. I came in with extremely low expectations and learned more than I ever expected to take from this class.
the handouts were to long
Perhaps more leeway in letting students get to to class on time? It's possible to be 3 minutes late and be counted absent due to having an 9:30-10:20 class when Hawaiian Studies begins 10 minutes later.
I feel that the information I learned in this class is the most valuable information I have learned all semester across all my courses.
I felt this class was a little harder than my other 100 level classes but I still learned a lot and believe everyone that is studying in Hawaii should learn the material from this course. Overall Mr. Williams was a great teacher.
Great teacher
Mahalo for a great semester kumu! I really enjoyed it :)

I liked how he held students accountable for their attendance and made class worth going to. I enjoyed learning about Hawaiian History and I liked how it was taught by a professor who cared that his students understood the material.
Make the class fun!
I would recommend this course to students who know absolutely nothing about Hawaiian history and culture. This instructor is good for them because they get a very basic idea of what happened and what is currently happening in Hawai'i. The details need to be sorted out though and it would best be done by someone who knows their facts extremely well.
