4. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
the resources we were provided with such as the hacker book and smart thinking website assistance.
The thing i found most helpful in the course was learning to be open to sharing my writing with others.
We write to be read.
I feel that the most helpful part of the course was "We Write to be Read" the fact that you knew that there would be the possibility you would have to read in front of the class made me try to write perfect every time.
This class taught me how to write essays effectively using transitions, concision, and support to back up ideas.
The most valuable thing about this course was learning to step out of my comfort zone when I write. I learned that emotion within an essay will pertrude out when others read it.
I learned how to use commas. I also learned how to make all of my essays have a better flow to them. He encouraged me to improve my essay and he helped show me what my weakness was in english.
English 100 has given me the opportunity to make my writing more descriptive. Clear, descriptive writing is more effective for a reader because it makes it easier to visualize. I have also learned the proper use of comma's.
"We write to be read", never be ashamed of your writing, stretch out of your skin and take risks, and be creative with your writing. By doing all of this it gives your writing a personalized touch that makes it different from everyone else, making your writing unique.
The basic concept I learned during this course of showing my thoughts rather than just telling them in my writing was most valuable. My college essays that I wrote greatly improved because of this concept and I feel better prepared for my English courses to come. Also, the book "Seeing & Writing 3" was very helpful in explaining, in detail, this concept.
Vinnie was a great encouragement. He pushed us when we fell behind while at the same time allowing us to work independently. I love our directed independence. Writing has become fun. There was definitely a lot of practice.
You write to be read.
It was the instructor's willingness to help and his passion for the class. This made the class more enjoyable and motivated me to do better on my work.
I found that this class further enhanced my writing. Thanks!! :)
I found that smartthinking turned out to be very helpful as we could ask them to give us advice about specific things in our work.
I think that the use of the smartthinking.com program was useful. Also, I believe that writing weekly freewrites helped me become a better writer.
We write to be read and never start sentences with this, that, and it
The most valuable thing I have learned in this course was to use lots of details.
I really enjoyed that I was able to have time to work with Professor Linares one on one. I found it helpful when he would take us out of class and speak to us individually. His comments and corrections were very helpful too. I found it easiest to improve when he would correct my paper and leave marks for me to see. I also liked that it seemed that every paper we wrote remained important to him.
I really enjoyed being able to meet with Mr. Linares one on one. This helped me to improve myself as a write as well as know what I was doing coreectly. Mr. Linares was very personable which helped to make me feel more comfortable in the class.
I found the weekly freewrites most helpful because they gave us time to practice what we learn without having the pressure of strict grading. It allowed us to be more flexible with the style of our writing and change up writing techniques without having to be too comitted to the technique.
The most valuable thing I learned from this class is that we write to be read. I learned how to appropriately write essays, and how to analyze a visual, and be able to put it in words. I learned a lot about writing, and sentece structure, thanks to Professor Linares.
All the different practice exercises we did to perfect our writing skills. Especially, all the help with the use of commas and transition words.
Through out this course, learning the concept "we write to be read", was the most valuable to me.
i found that the use of smarthinking was very useful in the course. the experts gave us really good feedback and encouraged our writing to progress.
I found the professor's time spent with our class most valuable. He always made himself available to help in person or via laulima.
English 100 allowed me to complete assignments and activities that assisted with growth in writing and life. Consequently, I enjoyed having Mr. Linares as a teacher. He was very encouraging and supportive.

12. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
To be more specific with deadlines and requirements for assignments.
Clarity in assignments.
I feel that the instructor taught the class as well as he could.
He does a great job in teaching the course, and I do not feel any improvements should be made.
The instructor can improve the teaching of this course by better organizing the work due. Many times, I was confused to where the freewrites or essays or any other works were supposed to be submitted.
I beleive that the instructor could improve the course by maybe giving a little more time for students to seek help.
Excellent class! Perfect as is.
Organizing "Laulima" better would make an incredible difference. The folders were disorganized most of the time; making it hard to turn in work. The concept of "show, don't tell" is a great concept, but very hard to understand. I believe that it should be explained in great detail because, to me, it is one of the most important concepts a writer can use.
My only problem was finding the work to be done. I was a little confused with the assignments to be done, but I feel that that is more on my part. This is my transition into working more independently.
Be more clear on instructions.
I think if we were given notice when things changed. For example, when the due date of an assignment was moved, we wouldn't get notice until we saw him in class, making us a little behind on some assignments.
He could possibly make sure the students understand what is expected of them for specific assignments before he leaves the classroom. And also, he could make sure the dates on the freewrite schedule and on the laulima discussion board accurate.
I think the instructor should do these three things to help improve teaching this course: 1. Clearly explain all assignments 2. Give better feedback on essays so that students writing can improve more 3. Organize Laulima a little differntly to make turning in homework a little easier and less confusing
Fine as is.
The instructor can improve the teaching of this course by organizing the folders on the laulima site, so that it's easier to find.
I would just suggest that directions over laulima.hawaii.edu were a little more clear. I found that certain assignments and directions were very unclear making it difficult to complete the task or I would end up doing it incorrectly.
Nothing - I enjoyed this class!
I think that the instructor could improve the teaching by being more supportive for the students who need extra help. When the instructor meets one on one with each student he should explain what the problems are with their writing and tell them how they can improve it. From there it would be good to keep track of improvement in that area.
He could explain to us in detail, more of what is needed. Instead of always emailing us, he could come into the class and explain the assignment in person.
Nothing, I think he did really good.
To improve this class, I would like it if the instructor reviewed the use of commas together with the students.
Give more feedback on essays and writings so that students can fix their writing instead of just referring to a book.
The professor can improve the teaching of this course by beginning with Chapter 3, Capturing Memorable Moments. The chapter was most popular among the class and resulted in the most effective of essays.
At times I felt as if he allowed his feelings towards our class get in the way of how he taught us. For example, instead of telling us to wake up in the morning we could have done some morning exercises or ice breakers.
13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
He is very enthusiastic and encouraging with all the work and material in this course. I feel that he is also a very effective teacher.
He is very enthusiastic about everything he teaches!
dominantly positive.
Very fun and very fun to learn from
10 out of 10. He was a great instructor to work with and I enjoyed his company and his class throughout the duration.
very positive. I have gained a lot of knowledge and resources in this class. I was able to grow as a writer as well as a person.
My overall evaluation of this instructor is that he did an excellent job. The teacher really got in depth with the class.
He is very helpful and willing to improve a students writing skills and ability. I feel that he is very professional at what he does. Not only does he make himself available for editing and questions, he gives us other resources to use such as, websites and books.
Very knowledgeable and open to questions. He shows exteme passion for the material he teaches and trys to engage us in different ways, to keep us motivated in achieving the best grad possible.
He was unclear many times, and even though we asked him questions he would many times make smart remarks to imply that we are not paying attention. Personally, I am always paying attention, but sometimes he is very unclear; hence the questions. Being more open to questions would help. His passion to teach is strong and very obvious which does help a great deal. He formed his curriculum to aid us in what we are struggling in. For example, the comma exercises were a very smart idea.
GREAT! He pushed us and helped us to succeed. I enjoyed the class and that is most important!
Good Job.
He is a very good english instuctor, because often times, writing can become boring and tedious. However, because he was so passionate and enthusiastic about the subject. My writing skills have really improved from this course.
He's great!
At times he was very helpful, but sometimes he could be very confusing about what he would say or what he wanted from us. Yet I still think he was on average, a good teacher.
the best english teacher so far.
Overall, I think Mr. Linares did a wonderful job!! He was very thorough about his instructions and offered his help if you needed it.
I really enjoyed Professor Linares. At times he was strict and seemed mean, but that's the college life. He really did improve my writing and I'm glad for him. He was tough, but he was good!
I really enjoyed Mr. Linares. As mentioned earlier, he is very personal and fun, which allowed me to be more comfortable and engage more in the class. He shows genuine love for the students as well as their well being. It is apparent that he cares about our improvement in the class. Overall, I learned a lot from him as a teacher.
Overall the instructor is a good teacher. At times he could be intimidating and asking questions can be difficult. But the teaching overall had many valuable lessons in it and was able to teach the class many new things. Communication was also a problem. He would often post things on the website that had confusing instructions and would have to explain it further in class. often there were still many unanswered questions and many times the students would be confused on specific details of assignments.
My overall evaluation of this instructor is that he is an excellent teacher. He was able to help me with my writing, and my essays. He was one of the best English teachers I had because of his knowledge, and because of his enthusiasm.
He knows everything there is about writing, and is very willing to share his knowledge with each of us....it's just we have to be willing to learn at the same time.
My overall evalutation of this instructor is very good. He knows what he is talking about and what he wants. It makes the class flow by smoothly.
I think he should spend more time teaching the students rather than scolding them and give clear instructions and due dates. Also, the folders were very unorganized and confused the students.
he is dedicated and committed to seeing his students be successful in their writing. He offers genuine thought and help.
In the beginning, he was very energetic and enthusiastic. Maintaining that enthusiasm throughout the year was probably the hardest task for him. Considering that, learning in the start was easy but near the end, we lost our enthusiasm for writing, as a class, and started to slack off.
14. My overall evaluation of this course is...
It really did live up to my standards of a typical 'college' course. Lots of independance is freely given for you to use inner motivation and dedication to thoroughly complete assignments.
It was very helpful.
a great experience.
Interestingly different and challenging if you weren't ready.
10 out of 10. I learned a lot of things and I have a feeling that what I learned will help me a lot in the future.
very great. I thought this class was fun and very informative.
My overall evaluation of this class is that it was really helpful. I have learned more in this one class than in my three previous years of English.
English 100 is very hard and stressful. This course requires a lot of time in and out of class, but in the end it is all worth it.
Excellent! I personally learned a lot, and realized that I had writing talent.
The course was very well constructed and helpful in improving my writing. I believe it is a course pertinent to all because the concepts introduced seem to only be unique to this course only and very helpful.
The course was great practice in writing quickly, structurally, and constructively. I am very pleased.
The class was fun.
Overall, it was very good and I would recomend it to other students.
Taking English 100 as my first college/high school course was an interesting experience. I think the set-up we had for turning in freewrites was good but overall, I would have to say this class was an alright class.
...fun and very interesting.
Overall, this was an excellent course and I made a great decision by taking it because now I am a better writer. =)
I'm really glad that I decided to take this class over the English class provided by our school. I feel that I learned so much! The course is challenging, but yet helpful at the same time. I would rate the class a 10 out of 10!
I really did enjoy taking English 100. I can say that I learned a lot of different things from this single class and I am glad I took it. English 100 as well as Mr. Linares has helped me to improve my writing skills. Also, this course helped to prepare me for future college courses I may take.
Overall I feel that this course has done me much good. I think that just the basic practice of writing a large number of essays was the best thing for me. The repetitive practice helped me to realize my own mistakes and try to build my own style of writing.
The course was really fun, and went really well for me. I believe that this class was worth taking because it helped me be able to write organized, well-written essays. After taking this class I have seen a great improvement in my writing. I would recommend this class to others thinking about taking English 100.
I learned alot about writing, as well as, just new aspects about myself. He taught me a lot of new things that will be beneficial in my near future.
My overall evaluation of this course is very good as well. I learned a lot of knew concepts that i never knew before, and was able to appreciate writing which was my goal at the begining of the semester.
I think that it was more of an independent course rather than a taught one. We just wrote and didn't get feedback from the teacher most of the time. The independence was good but we weren't really guided to the path to help us improve our writing to its fullest potential.
This course was enjoyable. I really enjoyed the bi-weekly in-class instruction and the rest of the class being online.
This course teaches students a lot of new methods of writing and also allows a writer to deeply think about many situations. Mr. Linares provides the materials necessary for a student to succeed.
