10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Everything, even if you're not majoring in film.
Getting a brief review on terms really helped. I also think that by making connections and contacts also helped me achieve my goals
Film critiques, clips and examples.
Connections and friendships made and increased knowledge and love for film.
Covered a wide range of topics valuable in the industry.
I think the most valuable aspect of 310 is the fact that we are forced to make three films over the course of a single semester. It's certainly difficult, however I believe the insanity that comes along with such a workload helps us to grow exponentially as filmmakers.
The learning atmosphere was really enjoyable.
learning about editing, working in the field, and making good movies in general.
Actual filming with equipment.
I liked that she is always encouraging and very flexible.
Practicing the use of a high-end camera and having the opportunity to produce films on a more professional level; learning what it takes to produce a film and what has to go into it is a very important and valuable experience.
11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
None.
Stress, anxiety.
Repeat of topics already covered.
I feel like we could have spent less time on documentaries. If I remember correctly, we spent a few classes solely focusing on The Documentary and, although it was very informative, a lot of us were already trying to figure out how to go about pre-production on our third projects.
The class hours were very long at times.
Too many projects for beginners. It should be 3 projects total in which one of those being a director. Its not a smooth transition with a more concentrated focus.
The four-hour length of the class makes sitting through it almost unbearable. I understand that its necessary for class to last that long, as we seem to be barely managing to cover everything that we need to cover as it is, but it's still something that should be taken into consideration.
12. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
The process I had to go through before, during and after filming.
My movie projects
The films I made
The humble beginnings of becoming bonafide filmmakers.
Great student film screenings.
The stress.
The films I made as part of the course work
How much I learned
How difficult the whole filming process was.
Having a great and understanding professor, who still held us to the industry standard.

23. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
She is open for questions and help anytime, tries to answers all of your questions but if she can't she'll still try to find answers from other people and get them to you.
Professor never got frustrated with my many, many questions and always promptly emailed me back with answers.
She is very knowledgeable and knows the rules and policy in that business.
She is very nice and helpful
Friendly and outgoing personality and she's great with constructive feedback. Artists can be sensitive people and she helps nurture growth.
HAs past and current experience in making her own films.
Professor Bassford is always willing to talk and give advice if we ever have questions.
Her teaching style is very enjoyable.
she's friendly and knows her shit
She is friendly and knows her stuff.
She is eager to help students work through the struggles on a project.
She's a good person, very friendly, easily approachable. I feel as though I could talk to he about any problems that I might be having without apprehension.
24. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
I felt that way too much was covered over this course and a lot of the material got lost in the shuffle. Also, Professor Bassford, though a very strong teacher, I feel is not as well versed in many aspects of film making as I would have liked and though we did have worshops, I feel that they were not enough and it was a bit frustrating when she couldn't help with different aspects of our projects. That being said, when Prof. Bassford did not have those answers, she made a point to get them, which was nice.
More coverage of editing and sound
I'd like a different grading system than the way the point-for-point system is right now. Losing one point is worth a large percent of the grade.
Most students had technical problems during post. More coverage of that subject during the first weeks of the course.
See answer to question 10.
Maybe present more specific examples when lecturing.
Again, just have a concentrated focus of one main individual project and 2 projects where the student must take a principal position other than Director.
Break the course up into shorter periods instead of having it as one huge period. I don't know if this is a problem specific only to myself, but I tended to have a ridiculously hard time staying focused for the entire four hours.
25. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?

12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The concepts of mise-en-scene are what i will remember and practice the most thanks to this course
the activites
Guest lecturers.
Going through all the different job opportunities in the production industry as well as the guest speakers coming was valuable.
It makes you appreciate a lot (if not) all aspects of films, especially those that are not seen to the general audience.
the movies, man, the movies!
Watching relevant films to gain a better understanding of the subject material. It a visual sense of learning, which at times is preferable over the textbook.
Learning the technical terms of the field was most valuable to me. I actually am able to speak to people of the industry in a more knowledgeable and respect fashion now.
mise en,scene was the most useful thing to know
everything
Group projects and presentations.
Learning industry terms
Group projects, the instructor's enthusiasm for the material.
Getting into groups and dissecting movies intellectually.
Analyzing the movies that we watched in class was valuable because we were able to apply what we learned in class and use it towards the movies. I also think that the guest speakers were quite valuable because they gave us insight into how the industry works and what kinds of positions there are. The group storyboard project was valuable too because it taught us to work together as a group and whether or not we work well with other people.
Everything
I think the most valuable aspect of the course was the storyboard project. It gave me a greater sense of what is accomplished when a film is made.
Learned a lot of professional terms and concepts, good to know for those who plan to enter film/video production.
group projects really helped out
the guest speakers were very helpful on certain topics
Everything about it interested me. There were no low points in the course.
Learning about filmmaking.
13. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Terminology can be important but for an intro course i felt as if these were things i did not need to learn at this early time
nothing really
N/A

nothing is unvaluable
The pace of learning feels a bit rushed at times.
Hard to choose anything least valuable, but in a very very picky way, i say the forced "group" work, because i felt those projects could have been done individually.
lighting..although it is animportant aspect in the film world..it is the characteristic that does not help the storyalong
Relearning the stuff I already knew. I just couldn't get out of my that I learned it already.
Groups were not randomized.
Some of the movies are dated. They may be pioneers of important cinema concepts, but extremely boring and uninteresting. Except Rear Window, that movie's awesome.

14. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
the concepts of mise-en-scene as applied to our analysis of movies and film we watch in the future
the collaboration concept made
The group projects and movies.
The movies we watched and how they are related to the material being discussed and also the guest speakers and their material.
the movies
A new perspective towards film.
the way my peers view everything i do in the film industry to be technically sound.
The group projects. This introduced me how important it is to work in a group and that if one person is unable to commit, it hurts everyone else in the group.
the movies we were able to enjoy in class
the knowledge of film I will remember it every time I watch a film
our group storyboard project
Remembering the people in my class and Professor Bassford.
The instructor's approach to the material and the media that was used to demonstrate film techniques.
how fucking long it was.
The classic movies that we watched. Folley artist. The Graduate. Editing. Mise en scene.
How fun it was
I will remember watching and analyzing movies.
watching movies and being 2hours and 45 mins long, which is tooooo long
looking back at everything this course taught me

23. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
A better overall review of course material before midterms and finals could better prepare us for what is expected during the tests
be more enthusiastic of the class
more films
N/A
GREAT KEEP GOING AS YOU ARE
Perhaps be more thorough on the content and what to expect on the exams. Sometimes what we, students are expected to know is a bit vague, which then makes the studying process a bit meticulous and stressful.
By adding in some type of "on-set" viewing during the course. To see most of the terms and situations brought up in the text, course material within an actual set would excenuate each and make them more understandable.
perhaps make the lectures a but more interesting..we must be interested if the goal of the class is to gain more acm majors
She make it more interesting and her ppt is illustrate very well
Enthusiasm is never a bad thing.
Randomizing groups for projects.
Have better, more thorough reviews for exams.

She could be more specific in her criteria. At times it is difficult to produce what is required to receive an A.
Show more variety of videos other than just films and a few documentaries. Even though it's a survey course, give people a little bit of the taste of the film/video production industry with some hands on stuff rather than have people in it give short lectures/speeches.
can't think of anything
mix up the groups more so people can experience working with different people. Sometimes i found myself staying with people in groups in the same area of the room as me.
She did a great job!
Nothing.
24. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
She was very approached and accommodating. Though she was very nice she maintained her position as a professor and kept us on track with the course concepts and material.
she knows a lot therefore we were taught a lot
She is actually knowledgeble in her teachings
She is very personable and knew all of our names by the second class, she has good examples and very willing to help.
She is very approachable, willing to help students and gives direct guidelines of what is needed to pass the class, projects and essays. She also speaks clearly and just at the right loudness.
EVERYTHING shes so nice and helpful answering questions, her personality is a major plus!
The PowerPoint and the discussions about the films.
Prof Bassford is so easily approachable and currently active in her craft. To be taught by someone who is not a dinosaur in the industry is fresh and exciting. Yes, things can be gained by those who've had success in the past, but this course needs a CURRENT feel to it, and Prof B brought it.
Quickly answers emails as soon as you send them. She'll reply within the say day. That's fast!!
she was always approachable and easy to talk to
How to study a film and careers in this area
She is very willing to help as much as she can. I know I can ask her anything.
She was always open for questions if we needed any help.
Her experience and knowledge.
She's enthusiastic and willing to answer questions.
She was knowledgeable about the material which helped guide us to finding the right answers and examples.

I felt that the guest lecturers were a unexpected delight for this class. Bringing in the distinguished filmmaker, Franco Amurri, was incredible. This type of professor effort for us students makes taking this class priceless.
I thought it was really cool of her to take the time to remember our names. Not a lot of professors do that in college, especially with a big class. :)
Thanks!
Decent class, way too long though. Some of the guest speakers are unnecessary.
Loved this class!

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I think everything learned is valuable to different extents, but I suppose the crucial things are the aspects and process of filmmaking, the different shot/frame types, the lighting, all of the work needed to complete a movie from start to finish, etc.
Mise-on-scene, Cinematography, and editing
segmenting a scene in a film
I felt like everything was actually pretty valuable for a film/ACM major or just a person interested in film. The class was eye-opening and helped my understanding to why certain movies are considered "masterpieces" or "classics", or won awards. The material went into depth about things that we wouldn't really have noticed on our own had we not taken the class.
Hands on projects such as the storyboard and guest speakers. Although with guest speakers not all of them were of interest but did communicate and share their thoughts effectively.
As a survey course i expected to only learn basic vocabulary and see what is to come. I feel this course met my expectations.
The knowledge that she shard through her experiences and that of the guest speakers were very valuable.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
None.
none
some of the guest speakers
Well, I didn't really care for the guest speakers, but I thought they had information they needed to present and for some people that information was useful, but for me, I didn't personally care.
I don't think for me guest speakers that were not involved in my specific ACM Major.
I feel that some of the films were redundant with regards to the unit we were studying.
9. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
The films we watched (they were good and good choices to watch for the class) and the different elements of films and filmmaking.
how enjoyable the exercises were
it's fun
The movies we've seen. I've seen a lot of brilliant movies in this class that I guarantee would not have seen outside of class. I enjoyed every single movie that was screened in class and each of the movies had a reason to be screened, so it wasn't like just watching movies for watching them. I liked the analysis of the films, like we watched certain films to notice certain elements; I really liked that.
Films I watched in the class. Nothing beats the classics
The first time I saw Rear Window
The subject matter that was learned. I will apply them to all future endeavors.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I can't think of anything, she did a great job.
It wouldn't hurt to have more hands-on projects (editing, cinematography practice). However, given that it was the summer and there isn't enough time in this time frame, I can't really blame anyone but the scheduling that didn't have enough time.
I don't have any suggestions in particular; I think she did a great job and I learned a lot.
to expand more on projects that are hand on and maybe touch on each major in ACM such as production, animation, writing.
Exert authority, and make expectations for assignments clear
