Connections and friendships made and increased knowledge and love for film.

Covered a wide range of topics valuable in the industry.

I think the most valuable aspect of 310 is the fact that we are forced to make three films over the course of a single semester. It's certainly difficult, however I believe the insanity that comes along with such a workload helps us to grow exponentially as filmmakers.

I liked that she is always encouraging and very flexible.

Practicing the use of a high-end camera and having the opportunity to produce films on a more professional level; learning what it takes to produce a film and what has to go into it is a very important and valuable experience.

Stress, anxiety.

Repeat of topics already covered.

I feel like we could have spent less time on documentaries. If I remember correctly, we spent a few classes solely focusing on The Documentary and, although it was very informative, a lot of us were already trying to figure out how to go about pre-production on our third projects.

None.

Too many projects for beginners. It should be 3 projects total in which one of those being a director. Its not a smooth transition with a more concentrated focus.

The four-hour length of the class makes sitting through it almost unbearable. I understand that its necessary for class to last that long, as we seem to be barely managing to cover everything that we need to cover as it is, but it's still something that should be taken into consideration.

Friendly and outgoing personality and she's great with constructive feedback. Artists can be sensitive people and she helps nurture growth.

Professor Bassford is always willing to talk and give advice if we ever have questions.

She is open for questions and help anytime, tries to answers all of your questions but if she can't she'll still try to find answers from other people and get them to you.

She is eager to help students work through the struggles on a project.

Professor never got frustrated with my many, many questions and always promptly emailed me back with answers.

24. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.

I'd like a different grading system than the way the point-for-point system is right now. Losing one point is worth a large percent of the grade.

Most students had technical problems during post. More coverage of that subject during the first weeks of the course.

Again, just have a concentrated focus of one main individual project and 2 projects where the student must take a principal position other than Director.

Break the course up into shorter periods instead of having it as one huge period. I don't know if this is a problem specific only to myself, but I tended to have a ridiculously hard time staying focused for the entire four hours.

More coverage of editing and sound

I felt that way too much was covered over this course and a lot of the material got lost in the shuffle. Also, Professor Bassford, though a very strong teacher, I feel is not as well versed in many aspects of film making as I would have liked and though we did have worshops, I feel that they were not enough and it was a bit frustrating when she couldn't help with different aspects of our projects. That being said, when Prof. Bassford did not have those answers, she made a point to get them, which was nice.

Maybe present more specific examples when lecturing.

Getting into groups and dissecting movies intellectually.

It makes you appreciate a lot (if not) all aspects of films, especially those that are not seen to the general audience.

Going through all the different job opportunities in the production industry as well as the guest speakers coming was valuable.

Group projects, the instructor's enthusiasm for the material.

Watching relevant films to gain a better understanding of the subject material. It a visual sense of learning, which at times is preferable over the textbook.

I think the most valuable aspect of the course was the storyboard project. It gave me a greater sense of what is accomplished when a film is made.

The concepts of mise-en-scene are what i will remember and practice the most thanks to this course

Learning the technical terms of the field was most valuable to me. I actually am able to speak to people of the industry in a more knowledgeable and respect fashion now.

Analyzing the movies that we watched in class was valuable because we were able to apply what we learned in class and use it towards the movies. I also think that the guest speakers were quite valuable because they gave us insight into how the industry works and what kinds of positions there are. The group storyboard project was valuable too because it taught us to work together as a group and whether or not we work well with other people.

Some of the movies are dated. They may be pioneers of important cinema concepts, but extremely boring and uninteresting. Except Rear Window, that movie's awesome.

Randomizing groups for projects.

Perhaps be more thorough on the content and what to expect on the exams. Sometimes what we, students are expected to know is a bit vague, which then makes the studying process a bit meticulous and stressful.

She could be more specific in her criteria. At times it is difficult to produce what is required to receive an A.

A better overall review of course material before midterms and finals could better prepare us for what is expected during the tests

Show more variety of videos other than just films and a few documentaries. Even though it's a survey course, give people a little bit of the taste of the film/video production industry with some hands on stuff rather than have people in it give short lectures/speeches.

By adding in some type of "on-set" viewing during the course. To see most of the terms and situations brought up in the text, course material within an actual set would excenuate each and make them more understandable.

She's enthusiastic and willing to answer questions.

She is very approachable, willing to help students and gives direct guidelines of what is needed to pass the class, projects and essays. She also speaks clearly and just at the right loudness.

She is very personable and knew all of our names by the second class, she has good examples and very willing to help.

I think she is quite open to talk to and cares enough to memorize each student's name.

Prof Bassford is so easily approachable and currently active in her craft. To be taught by someone who is not a dinosaur in the industry is fresh and exciting. Yes, things can be gained by those who've had success in the past, but this course needs a CURRENT feel to it, and Prof B brought it.

She was knowledgeable about the material which helped guide us to finding the right answers and examples.

good job!

I felt that the guest lecturers were a unexpected delight for this class. Bringing in the distinguished filmmaker, Franco Amurri, was incredible. This type of professor effort for us students makes taking this class priceless.

Mise-on-scene, Cinematography, and editing

segmenting a scene in a film

Hands on projects such as the storyboard and guest speakers. Although with guest speakers not all of them were of interest but did communicate and share their thoughts effectively.

As a survey course i expected to only learn basic vocabulary and see what is to come. I feel this course met my expectations.

I felt like everything was actually pretty valuable for a film/ACM major or just a person interested in film. The class was eye-opening and helped my understanding to why certain movies are considered "masterpieces" or "classics", or won awards. The material went into depth about things that we wouldn't really have noticed on our own had we not taken the class.

The knowledge that she shard through her experiences and that of the guest speakers were very valuable.

I think everything learned is valuable to different extents, but I suppose the crucial things are the aspects and process of filmmaking, the different shot/frame types, the lighting, all of the work needed to complete a movie from start to finish, etc.

I don't think for me guest speakers that were not involved in my specific ACM Major.

I feel that some of the films were redundant with regards to the unit we were studying.

Well, I didn't really care for the guest speakers, but I thought they had information they needed to present and for some people that information was useful, but for me, I didn't personally care.

The first time I saw Rear Window

The movies we've seen. I've seen a lot of brilliant movies in this class that I guarantee would not have seen outside of class. I enjoyed every single movie that was screened in class and each of the movies had a reason to be screened, so it wasn't like just watching movies for watching them. I liked the analysis of the films, like we watched certain films to notice certain elements; I really liked that.

The subject matter that was learned. I will apply them to all future endeavors.

The films we watched (they were good and good choices to watch for the class) and the different elements of films and filmmaking.

It wouldn't hurt to have more hands-on projects (editing, cinematography practice). However, given that it was the summer and there isn't enough time in this time frame, I can't really blame anyone but the scheduling that didn't have enough time.

to expand more on projects that are hand on and maybe touch on each major in ACM such as production, animation, writing.

I don't have any suggestions in particular; I think she did a great job and I learned a lot.

She always had time to answer questions.

She's very understanding and her grading process is straight forward.

She made class interesting and fun. I looked forward to coming to class to learn more.

Her sincere kindness and willingness to listen to students.

She is willing to help and listen to students and is understanding and knowledgeable. She is also friendly and usually in a good mood.
