Dr. Adams feedback for our assignments were very helpful and he commuicated well through emails. Through this course, I became more interested in social policy.
I feel I have a good foundation for policy analysis due to Paul's facilitation of the class material. I was able to write my papers on my social welfare focus which made the class even more interesting to me. Dr. Adams is great professor.
Dr. Adams is a true intellectual.

This is the second class I have taken from Professor Adams. He is clear, direct, and very knowledgeable about course material. Paul Adams is a perfect instructor for this course.
Professor Adams was well organized and made reading examples and handouts avaialable to us. He gave adequate example readings to help guide in writing our policy paper
The requirements of this class are markedly different from those of other courses in the SSW. The policy paper itself was a drastic change from how we are usually expected to write. It may be helpful to future students to explain that this paper is not a typical social work paper. It may also help to explain each part at the beginning and have more time to pick topics and alternatives.
The course instructor was very knowledgeable about the course. He prepared very well for every class and utilized Laulima to put handouts and samples and all of the class material needed on the site. But, the way he delivered the message in my opinion was boring, it was a drag, so it made it boring to learn.
Dr. Adams is an excellent professor. His class was well instructed, information was clear and concise. He went above and beyond to assure students understood material. He was flexible and encouraging. One of the best faculty I've had at UH Manoa!
Though it is a challenge working within the same group for the whole semester, I enjoyed how we learned the material than directly applied it to what we were working on. I enjoyed that he provided opportunities for feedback, and loved that he provided time to work on projects in class. Overall positive experience.

For such a complex topic as policy analysis, Paul surprised me with how effectively he taught the material. Many of the course topics were complicated, but I appreciated the fact that Paul was willing to search for multiple examples and analogies that might help students understand what he wanted to convey. He set up class assignments over the course of the semester such that students could pace themselves in working toward their final assignment. The feedback from Paul and our peers via Laulima helped us shape our group project into a refined product. Paul tried different strategies, such as the "One Minute Reflection Paper" and providing powerpoints, to assess our learning and how he could enhance it. One of the best things about Paul as an instructor was his approach to group projects. He based our group assignments on interest rather than social circle, which I have never seen any other teacher do before. Paul gave us plenty consultation time, where our group could meet in class to divvy responsibilities and check in with each other regularly - with such busy lives and conflicting schedules, this consultation time was absolutely critical to my group's success. He also made the effort to meet each group individually on a regular basis, which indicates to me that he genuinely cared about our educational success. I never had a strong liking for social policy, but I think I have obtained a much better grasp on what it entails and the work that goes into policy research/analysis. Mahalo Paul!
Paul Adams was excellent. He was VERY student-orientated. He made working in a group very convenient. I was also very lucky in having a great group. I am very grateful to him for giving us time in class to meet up with our group, especially after learning a subject that is relevant to our final group paper. I learned a lot from his class without feeling stressed out.
Paul is such a knowledgable man as well as a teacher. Thanks Paul for helping my group get out of its funk. Mahalo.
I am so thankful that Dr. Adams taught this class. The information was clear and made sense. The power point lectures supported the policy analysis assignment. :) I think that he is very thoughtful and considerate of student concerns and makes every effort to adjust his teaching to answer all of our questions. This class was surprisingly painless because of his teaching style and support. I respect him as a professor and believe he is an asset to the MSW program.

15. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
I think Paul Adams has a lot to offer and is a very knowledgable instructor, however many of the classes were not as clear as it would seem. Adams has a wonderful way of self-evaluating and an air of constant, obvious effort that goes into making sure we do understand the concepts, yet many times the content was still quite unclear. I respect ad commend his efforts entirely, I actually think much of the confusion could be cleared up if the syllabus could be changed. The subject matter is quite interesting and relevant to what we are doing and interested in in the social work field, but I feel that the way the class is taught needs to be revamped or updated. For example, instead of us having to pick topics to analyize, pick a bunch for us and assign them to groups. That way they can related to actual policies that are going on now or subject matter that is happening now, instead of these made up ones where in the end we all ask "what was the point of focusing our time on that, it means nothing". If it is attached to something we concretely understand it may feel like there is more of a reason to do it, and we could learn more that way. Learning by hands on with this type of subject matter seems more helpful than by the theory of. If a semester long project is too continue, it may be helpful to have mini assignments due every week, even it is one paragraph long, that way it can correlate to what we have read in the book and we can bring it into class and find out if we are doing it correctly. Instead, we would find out that what we had been working on the whole time was actually not correct and we were misunderstanding the concept of things. This subject matter that may seem so obvious to those that understand it, but to those that don't it is impeccably confusing...and all we wanted to do was understand! Reading the book was not helpful at all because it was all theory, the examples didn't clear anything up. I think this class could be great, but truly it was stressful to feel like you really didn't understand what was going on for the most part, and even more stressful was that we didn't even know what to ask! Tough one, although I think I like the subject matter.
The instructor was great, however, sometimes other students in the class were loud and disruptive.
Paul is extremely smart and sometimes this works to his disadvantage. Clearer examples or simpler lectures may help to set a better foundation for the overall course. Paul does take a lot of time with the students and if I ever needed help he would take the time to try and explain.
He gives a lot of reading materials, examples, etc. that are relevant to the class and enhance my learning. He utilizes laulima effectively, more than any other teacher I have. I liked that.
great instructor. He has improved his teaching skills and interactive skills greatly since last year! I enjoyed him very much!
Professor has a good sense of humor. He is open to ideas - collaborating with group members to do homework (press release). He is also open to discussions and is very knowledgeable.
Refreshing. Wonderful. Dr. Adams would constantly ask for feedback through a one minute paper, where we were encouraged to let him know what worked and what did not work for us that day in class. The next class he made changes were he could to make class a bit better. He knew his stuff! Was very motivating, sparked the interest of others. One student remarked that he teaches over his head, the following powerpoint presentations he related the material to current events, from text jargon "lol" to girls getting their hair pulled during soccer matches. He really made the effort to take student suggestions and make changes. I really appreciated this. Also, his amazing use of Laulima, I wish he would teach other professors and make it a requirement of the professors, if others did half as much as him, it would be awesome. The use of groups with Dr. Adams was the best ever! He broke us up by interest, not friends who may just try to use you for the ride. This made the groups interest
P. Adams is a wonderful instructor, he took a subject that most dread and made the course easy to learn from and easy to integrate into our social work practice.

I initially had a difficult time understanding the teaching method in this class however, my mid-semester, I understood the goal of each class session. The instructor is very knowledgable and has a great sense of witty humor which I enjoyed very much!!!
I enjoyed this class then any previous policy classes. The material reviewed each week went with the assignments that were required. The instructor made it very easy to comprehend and if any think was still fuzzy, he provided one minute papers to be addressed at next session.

22. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Our class was too large and was full of distractions. To Adams' credit, he brought in a chime to calm people down, but it felt like middle school. Really irritating to be around a bunch of adults that are hindering your own learning process. Doubt there is a chance, but smaller class size would be nice for those who really need to concentrate and think hard about the subject matter. Also, another suggestion would be to randomly assign the group projects. What happens at this point of the MSW program is that most everyone has found their "click" and continually does project after project with them throughout each class. So not only throughout all of our classes are we seeing the same people present the same things together, if you are person that wants to branch out and learn with different people all the time, there is no room for that. I was entirely unhappy with my group and felt that I was stuck with them because of this dilemma. It would be nice to just have to work with others.
Interesting material--smaller class size would have definitely helped.
This class was helpful in learning how to do a policy analysis, which is important to know in social work practice.
I enjoyed doing the policy paper. It motivated me to learn about issues surrounding Hawaii. Commenting on my peers papers also provided a learning experience.
He used a Rubix Cube so you knew exactly how you did, what things you could have done better. He also emailed you a paragraph explaining your good points and some areas you could do better at, you couldn't ask for anything better. It was wonderful because we got to meet in our groups to discuss things, the groups really got into this which resulted in a loud classroom at times which may have distracted others. But, this goes to show how the groups were really getting into it. Dr. Adams would go to each group, spend time with them and make sure they were on the right track and answered all their questions before moving on, he never made you feel rushed. When some students commented about the noise level, the next class he brought his cell phone and encouraged groups to spread out anywhere, call him and let him know where they are (stay within reasonable distance) and he went to them. He expressed that he didn't want us to worry about our grades but really wanted us to learn. I felt this, his need to have us learn, to understand about policy, to get it. This was one of the best courses I have ever taken because of Dr. Adams desire to teach me, wanting me to get it, his passion for it. He revamped his Laulima sight a few times based on students input, so it was easier to follow. (by some students comments you could tell they never looked at the sight, they seemed to be bitter and not wanting to apply any effort). If there is any student who has negative comments about this class, I know of 3 students, it was because they didn't want to apply themselves.
Even though the course is mandatory for our degree; it was a good tool and resource to take into the field of social work.
Very useful class for sharpening critical thinking and analytical skills. A good and necessary class for every social worker. we already talked about suggested changes, maybe more direction from you re: the choosing of topics (suggest topics be more specific, etc.) and a little extra warning about setting up interviews, little things like that could help improve the class.
How excellent can Policy be. But overall the course and instructor were good. I learned a great deal about how policy is related to SW and Adams knows the material very well
